GKL

GVL

What is GVL and GKL

Types and application

According to operational options, GVL sheets are divided into three types:

  • "GVL". The basic variety, which has no particular advantages, but the cheapest. Used for wall decoration in rooms with normal air humidity.
  • "GVLV". Moisture resistant variety. It is able to withstand high levels of air humidity (from 70%). It can also be used to level the floor without screed.
  • "GVLV EP". The letters "EP" in the title mean "floor element". This type of GVL sheets has the greatest strength, therefore it is best suited for leveling floors.

The main purpose of drywall is the construction of partitions, the creation of multi-level ceilings, the leveling of wall surfaces. Modern industry produces four types of such sheets:

  • Plain gypsum board. It can be used in rooms for any purpose, where the air humidity does not exceed 70%. The standard version has the most affordable price, but you shouldn't hope for any special advantages from them.
  • Moisture resistant gypsum plasterboard (often labeled as gypsum plasterboard). The cardboard with which the gypsum filler is coated is impregnated with special compositions of substances in this modification. This helps to successfully resist high humidity air (more than 70%). Such material can be used for decoration kitchen facilities, laundry rooms and other rooms with a high content of water vapor in the air.
  • Fire resistant gypsum board. The sheet must withstand the action high temperature and an open flame without changing properties for at least 20 minutes. Therefore, GVL is much more resistant to shock loads. Even a standard sheet is able to withstand tensile forces of up to 5.5 MPa.

The weight

To calculate the strength of fastening structures, to assess the complexity of installing sheets on walls and to solve many other problems, it is necessary to compare the weight of these two materials. If it turns out to be too large, you will have to make more massive and reliable fastening structures.

If we compare the mass of the thickest sheets, it can be seen that GVL is heavier by almost 40%! Naturally, such a large mass makes it difficult to install sheets in place, transport, cut. It is also required to install more solid fasteners. All this cannot but affect the cost of installation.

Flexibility and fragility

This parameter is also associated with the structural features of the material. Due to the laminar structure, drywall is more flexible than gypsum plasterboard. For example, if you try to lift a layer of GVL lying on the floor by grabbing the short side, it will almost certainly crack. Drywall with such a situation will bend, but will not break.

Due to the presence of short cellulose fibers in the composite, GVL is a brittle material. Therefore, gypsum fiber boards cannot be used to finish bent surfaces, even with relatively smooth bends. For bathroom. In this case, it is better to use gypsum fiber, especially for laying on the floor. The material does not absorb water, does not deform in high humidity conditions. You can use moisture-resistant drywall in the bathroom, but only on walls that do not get wet.

For a wooden house. The choice depends on the purpose of use. Both materials are suitable for leveling the walls. Sheets pass air and steam equally well, allow different types decorative finishing... If it is necessary to increase the fire resistance of the structure, choose GKLO brand drywall. To protect the walls from moisture in the kitchen and bathroom, GVLV is used.

Which is cheaper?

The cost of drywall is lower, since it is easier to manufacture and slightly inferior to gypsum fiber in terms of characteristics. In some cases, for example, with increased surface loads and high humidity, the price of GVL is quite justified and is repaid many times over by its properties.

Drywall

The sheets are environmentally friendly, odorless, do not contain or emit substances harmful to human health. Like all gypsum-based materials, they have the ability to breathe, that is, absorb excess moisture from the air and release it into environment with a decrease in humidity. Gypsum is non-combustible, fire-resistant and contains about 18% crystallization water (with a sheet thickness of 12.5 mm, this is about 2 l / m²). therefore building construction from GKL have high fire resistance. In case of fire, they retain their integrity and insulating ability for a long time, slowing down the spread of fire.

Since January 2015, a new "Interstate Standard 32614-2012 (EN 520: 2009) - Plaster Plates for Construction" is in force. From this time drywall sheets (GKL) are called "gypsum building boards" (GSP) and the number of types is significantly increasing. Previously, there were four of them: conventional (GKL), moisture resistant (GKLV), fire resistant (GKLO) and moisture resistant (GKLVO). The new standard contains eight types, including slabs of a given density, increased strength, slabs with increased surface hardness, etc. And most importantly, these are different useful qualities can be combined with each other to obtain materials that differ even more in properties, including for new areas of application.

Gypsum fiber sheet

Gypsum fiber sheet (GVL) is a pressed board made from a mixture of a gypsum binder and fluff cellulose fibers evenly distributed in it, which play the role of reinforcing elements. The material is hard, durable, has excellent fireproof and sound insulation properties. It is used for cladding walls, ceilings, and creating partitions.

For places where the material must withstand the effects of moisture with periodic moistening and drying, moisture-resistant gypsum-fiber sheets (GVLV) are intended. Their front and back surfaces are highly resistant to moisture penetration. Compared to drywall, gypsum fiber sheets have increased strength. Therefore, they are used as a basis for finishing floor coverings in rooms with dry or normal humidity regime... With GVL, it will provide a high degree of fire safety, as well as simplicity and reliability of the design.

The usual dimensions of GVL are 2500 × 1200 × 12.5 / 10 and 1200 × 1200 × 10 mm. Small-format sheets are convenient on floors where it is important to control the evenness of the base, and in small areas it is more convenient to do this. Selection criteria for sheet material

The choice of a particular sheet material is determined by many factors. For example, in country houses permanent residence it is practically unlimited. It is only important to take into account the specific operating conditions of sheets for finishing. For rooms with normal humidity, an ordinary GKL is suitable, with an increased one, as in bathrooms and kitchens, - GKLV.

In homes, it is advisable to pay attention to the frequency and duration of these periods, say a six-month stay from spring to autumn or rest every weekend throughout the year. If, in the absence of the owners, the minimum required temperature of +5 ° C is maintained for a week, it is permissible to use moisture-resistant drywall.

If the temperature in the house is not much higher than the outside temperature, experts recommend using GVLV. They can withstand fluctuations in temperature and humidity without significant deformation. Note that an insignificant increase in geometric dimensions with an increase in humidity is a natural process not only for GCR, but also for GVL, but in the latter it is significantly less. In such close to "extreme" conditions, they will last longer and will be a more stable and reliable base for finishing.

In corridors, storerooms, boilers, the impact resistance of sheet materials is important. GVL, as harder, durable material, transfers loads and accidental shocks without significant consequences, which means that it increases the maintenance-free service life of the finish.

Accuracy comes first

Often among craftsmen who are accustomed to working with drywall, when switching to gypsum-fiber sheets, the amount of damaged material increases. The fact is that drywall forgives a rather careless attitude during transportation and installation, mainly due to the cardboard cladding. Whereas gypsum fiber sheets are harder material. Claddings and partitions made of it withstand increased mechanical stress, you can hang heavier objects on them, but you should handle the gypsum fiber sheets more carefully and carefully during transportation and installation.

Onsite, gypsum fiber sheets and drywall should only be stored horizontally (flat) on a flat surface.

The basic principles of working with gypsum fiber sheets are identical to working with drywall. For installation use the same metal profiles: rack and rail. But for fixing gypsum fiber sheets to frames, there are special self-tapping piercing or drilling screws with a double thread and a countersink head. Professionals know about this. But amateur craftsmen can mistakenly take ordinary drywall screws. However, drown them in solid body the sheet will not work. The hats will protrude. And so that they do not peep through the finishing layer of paint or wallpaper, the surface will need to be leveled with a rather thick layer of putty. Spend time and money on additional work you will not have to if you purchase screws intended for GVL with a special thread and a reduced head.
