You can update an old door with your own hands. Do-it-yourself door decor: we do the decor of interior doors ourselves, choosing the appropriate option

How to refine the front door from the inside if its condition does not inspire delight? The design flaws on the outside are not as terrible as on the side of the room, because every element of the interior must be flawless so as not to spoil the overall picture. What to do in this case?

There are several ways to transform an old door

First of all, you need to take care of the completion of all rough work. This is especially true of recently installed doors, because you need to finish the work and mask the foam to prevent its destruction under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. You also need to close the gray wall, level its surface and decorate the opening. It is also important to ennoble the canvas itself, especially for nondescript metal and old models. Update worn-out fittings. Do not forget that the interior doors must also be in perfect condition. So, let's consider in order how to update the front door and do it all yourself.

Slopes

First of all, to give a complete look to the doorway from the inside, you need to take care of the slopes. This is a prerequisite, no matter which doors you are renovating entrance or interior doors. Various materials can be used to finish the slopes:

  • drywall;
  • plaster;
  • plastic panels;
  • MDF or wood;
  • metal carcass;
  • laminate.

New slopes will make the door more attractive

How to ennoble the front door using drywall from the inside with your own hands:

  1. Clear out debris and seal any crevices.
  2. Apply a layer of cement plaster and glue the cut-to-size drywall sheets onto it. If the irregularities are significant, a metal frame is used for installation.
  3. Cover the joints with putty, additionally using a serpyanka.
  4. Prime the surface.
  5. ... Then you can paint them in any suitable color or paste over with wallpaper.

If you decide to transform the entrance with overhead panels, pre-assemble the frame. Insulation can be laid under the bottom. The panels are installed both vertically and horizontally using the rack method.

Platbands

Since you decided to refine the doors, you need to take care of their framing. We are talking about platbands for entrance and interior doors. They usually come in a set along with other details for the design of the opening. If you purchased only the canvas and the frame, you can easily buy the matching colors separately. They can be made of metal, MDF, wood or pressed paper. The fastening methods differ depending on the design. You can nail them with your own hands on nails without hats, plant them on liquid nails or polyurethane foam. The best option is telescopic platbands, which are attached directly to the box using the thorn-groove method, but they are more expensive.

Stylish platbands will help transform the interior

If you decide, also do not forget about the platbands. If desired, you can make them yourself using wood blanks. Use wood stain and varnish or paint to give them the desired shade. It all depends on the style of the room and the type of door. Usually, the color is matched to the canvas or baseboards, tone-on-tone, but you can play on contrast if appropriate.

Covering the canvas

How to refine an old metal door with your own hands? You can use one of these materials:

  • paint;
  • varnish enamel;
  • self-adhesive film;
  • laminate;
  • veneer, PVC or eco-veneer;
  • thin MDF panels.

Before applying the coating, you need to clean the entrance door from dust, rust and thoroughly degrease it. Then it is advisable to apply the primer and only after it dries to start working on the facing. MDF panels are attached with glue or with a frame. Self-adhesive is very easy to apply with a soft spatula. Painting methods are self-explanatory. But laminate, PVC and veneer need to be fixed by hot pressing. Such work can only be carried out in a horizontal position of the door.

Options for the outer coating of the door leaf

How to transform old interior doors? To do this, you can use the same methods as for the input, as well as others. For example, decorative inserts. Initially, the surface is processed using one of the above methods. Then you can decorate the canvas with glass fragments, colored plastic, stained glass windows or mirrors.

Soft padding

An old metal door can be transformed not only visually, but also qualitatively with the help of soft upholstery. Dermantin is most often used for this. To create a volume, a layer of insulation is laid under it. Thus, you will be able to kill two birds with one stone: you will decorate the canvas visually and provide the best heat and sound insulation.

A quick way to transform an old door with eye-catching upholstery

How to refine the coating of an entrance metal door with your own hands:

  1. Remove the canvas from the hinges and lay horizontally.
  2. Measure its dimensions and cut out a piece of dermantin with a margin of 15-20 cm on each side.
  3. Cut the sheets from the insulation to the size of the door.
  4. Glue the insulation onto the superglue. Try not to leave empty joints. You can plant the material on polyurethane foam.
  5. After everything dries up, start working with dermantin. Tuck its edges so that no slices are visible.
  6. Secure the upholstery with glue, and you can use furniture nails and decorative cord to add texture. They need to be hammered into the substrate material, so you can install denser elements according to the diagram in advance.

This decoration method is also used for wooden doors. In this case, things are even easier, because you can use a furniture stapler.

An important point: since we are talking about finishing from the inside, it is not necessary to make rollers for sealing the vestibule, because there will be no sense from them, and they will only spoil the appearance.

Interior doors

Interior doors require much more attention. They can be made from various materials, which must be taken into account when finishing them. How to refine newly installed interior doors? To do this, you need to perform the same manipulations as for the input. That is, first of all, it is necessary to carry out the final finishing of the opening: platbands, seal up all joints and cracks, arrange the slopes. In most cases, you can limit yourself to completing the door or simply plaster the opening. For more expensive and sophisticated renovations, decorative panels should be used. If the canvas is far from new, you need to refresh it slightly.

Doors can be given a touch of antiquity and it will become the most stylish element of the interior

How to refine old interior doors with your own hands:

  • paint;
  • paste over with wallpaper or self-adhesive film;
  • cover with stain and varnish;
  • use thermal pads (veneer, PVC, oracal, laminate);
  • embed glass inserts.

You can use special decorative techniques, such as decoupage or artificial aging. This decor looks especially impressive on a wooden door with curly panels. Another similar technique is craquelure. For this, paint or varnish with special properties is used. First, the canvas is opened with a layer of the usual composition. After it dries, craquelure is applied. When dry, it becomes covered with cracks, tearing off the bottom layer. It looks very impressive. In order not to be too flashy, you can use this method of decoration in certain areas, for example, in combination with decoupage.

It doesn't matter if you transform old doors or ennoble new ones, the final look depends only on your imagination. Moreover, all this can be done with minimal costs.

Do not rush to dismantle the boring old interior doors and replace them with new ones. Consider updating them, because there are many ways to decorate and restore old furniture that are applicable to door panels.

Decorating doors from fiberboard

Process step by step:

  1. If the door is completely askew, it must first be removed from its hinges and the old fittings removed. New handles, locks, latches in the same style on all interior doors will be the first step towards their renewal.
  2. So, the door was removed. Now you need to remove the old paint. Use a blow dryer and putty knife.
  3. After that, cracks and scratches are closed with special putties and putty.
  4. Wait for the surface to dry and sand it.
  5. Cover the canvas with linseed oil to prevent moisture deformation.

For a visual performance, see the video:

The door is ready for the actual decoration. The easiest way is to cover the door leaf with colored paint or varnish it. Further, there is room for imagination:

  • make a drawing using a stencil;
  • paint the moldings in a different color;
  • glue the moldings if they were not there or imitate with paint.

Various applications - fabric, paper, vinyl, leather, photo wallpaper - will allow you to turn an old door into a new one - original, stylish and unusual.

We decorate the old bathroom door

Before you start decorating the door to the bathroom, there is an important point to consider. Since high humidity is constantly present in the room, the coating that you apply to the door, or rather, to the inside, must be resistant to this factor.

How to prepare the door leaf is described in the previous section of the article. In short: remove the old paint layer from the door, sand, putty and prime the surface. If slats are missing, they can be purchased and attached to the door. After painting everything in one color, you will get a whole picture.

An excellent option for a bathroom door is to install a full-length mirror in a frame made of slats. If it is flexible, plastic, the installation process will be quite simple, but the effect will surpass expectations: it is beautiful, practical and useful.

The mirror can be replaced with a mosaic, a special vinyl sticker, or even a piece of wallpaper (washable and moisture resistant only). By experimenting with materials and colors, you will make your old bathroom door stylish and special.

How to decorate old doors with glass

The first option that comes to mind when thinking about options for decorating an old door with glass is stained glass. What you need for this:

  • water-based stained glass paints;
  • black paint - for the outline;
  • thumbnail image.

Transfer the drawing to the glass, trace the contours with a thin black line, and after drying, start painting the elements with different colors.

You can make your work even easier by simply buying a special film that imitates a stained glass picture.

One of the options for decorating a door with glass in the video:

Stained-glass windows allow you to make even an old door unusual and stylish

If the old glass in the door was transparent, it can be made frosted. To do this, you will need to purchase liquid glass (1 liter will be enough, its price does not exceed the cost of a chocolate bar or a cup of cappuccino), which will need to be mixed with crushed chalk (or tooth powder). The resulting paste is applied to a degreased, flat surface in 2 layers.

An easier way is to apply a special film or buy a ready-made matting paste.

Choose your own option for decorating old doors, and you will see how easy it is to update the decor in an apartment with your own hands and at no extra cost.

Despite their unlimited service life, they wear out rather quickly. The material suffers from deformation and shrinkage, coatings wear off or become faded.

You can replace such canvases with new ones, but this is a big cost, a waste of time for replacement, subsequent repair work after their installation.

Therefore, the easiest way is to put these structures in order on their own, that is, give them a second life by updating their coating and eliminating defects. How to restore old doors? More details later in the article.

To correctly and efficiently restore doors, you need to know how it is done.

Usually, interior linens suffer from mechanical stress and moisture.

Plastic varieties are more prone to scratches.

To make them invisible, they must be polished gently.

  • Painting. A wooden door or one with veneer inserts is easiest to varnish or paint. It is better to paint a wooden surface using a special brush or spray. The wooden surface should be painted and varnished by brushing along the fibers, then the material will lie flat, filling in all the irregularities, chips and other defects.
  • Decoration. To add brightness to the updated canvas, you can use other shades to create a new image. You can paint the canvas in one color, and the protruding parts in another, contrasting with the main selected shade. If the surface is smooth, then it is recommended to use carved strips made of wood or polyurethane, sticking them on the surface to be treated, after having painted them in a suitable color.
  • Pasting using roll wallpaper, colored paper or fabric. On a smooth canvas, it is often suggested to stick special photo wallpapers that are sold in a store or can be easily purchased via the Internet. The design can be styled to match the room. For the nursery, they select drawings and reproductions from children's magazines. For the kitchen, select pages with dishes or vegetables and fruits. Before gluing paper sheets, they must be held in water, then apply PVA glue to the entire sheet and glue on the canvas, carefully smooth it out. After the paper and glue have dried, the surface is covered with a colorless varnish to keep the work longer. In the same way, you can paste over the surface of the old material with a cloth.
  • Vinyl stickers. When pasting with vinyl stickers, it is not necessary to clean the canvas from old paint and eliminate irregularities. Stickers will hide all defects, and you can paint after that. It is necessary to stick them on a degreased surface, cleaning this place with an alcohol cleaner. Remove the backing from the sticker and apply to the work area, carefully smooth. Only then can the film protecting the front side be removed.
  • Groats decoration. The original way to decorate an old door is the image of drawings made from bulk materials. Rice and buckwheat are ideal for this. The grains should be glued onto PVA glue or standard wallpaper. After the drawing dries well, the canvas is covered with several layers of colorless varnish. Dry groats, and even under a layer of varnish, are stored for a very long time.

With a little effort and imagination, it will disappear how to restore old doors at home. Renovated interior doors will add warmth and comfort to the home, as well as improve the interior of the apartment.

Renovation of an old door with glass

How to restore old doors with glass is not an idle question.

Glass becomes cloudy over time, gets scratches and, therefore, when renewed, it must be restored or replaced with a new one.

To remove the old glass, you need to carefully remove the glazing beads that hold it.

You can replace the glass with a modern one: frosted, corrugated, colored, with a pattern or photo printing.

To correctly insert new glass into the door leaf, you must do the following:

  • Measure the parameters of the opening in the door leaf where the glass will be inserted.
  • Cut the glass to the required size so that it can reliably "sit" in the opening, for which it should be 5 mm shorter than the required size on each side. You will need a glass cutter and a metal ruler to cut a piece.
  • Insert the glass into the opening, pre-treated with sealant and fix it with glazing beads, fixing them with thin nails.

It is more difficult to insert glass with hidden fixation; complete disassembly with unscrewing the bolts will be required in order to pull out the old part and also insert a new one. The negative aspect of such a replacement is the possibility of losing the correct dimensions of the canvas. In this case, you need to straighten it with a planer.

If you insert old glass, then it must be restored to its normal form. Clean the old one with a scraper, acetone or a blade. Polish small scratches with toothpaste.

Renew the glass with a film with a picture, paint it or make a stained-glass window on it. It is necessary to apply fresh glazing beads and replace the fittings with new parts.

An acrylic shatterproof mirror can be inserted instead of glass. It is lightweight and durable, lends itself well to cutting and stands out for its high decorative effect. Then the door will look like new and will delight the residents for a long time.

Fiberboard canvases

Such a canvas is slightly different from working with wooden surfaces. The thickness of the fiberboard surface reaches only 4 mm, so it is necessary to remove the paint from it with the utmost care.

You cannot use a blowtorch for this - you can use an iron by wrapping it in a towel, if there is no hair dryer.

After sanding, either varnish or paint the canvas with new paint. But there is a restoration method that allows you to turn a thin sheet into a natural wooden door - this is the veneering of the sheet.

Veneer parts are sold in specialty stores. You can glue it with an iron, heating the surface, because it already has an adhesive base.

Care should be taken so as not to overheat and burn. The glued parts can be stained and varnished. You can decorate a simple door by gluing embossed strips to its surface.

Do not forget about the restoration of the door frame - it must correspond to the renewed door leaf. By replacing the fittings with a new, more modern one, you can increase the service life of the door.

Plastic products

Most assume that it will last forever and its dazzling white appearance will not dry out. However, even plastic products will require replacement or restoration over time.

An old plastic door can be restored in several ways:

  • Door painting. First you need to remove the old protective film from the plastic. Then wash the surface well using special products. The main difficulty in applying paint to plastic is that the liquid cannot be applied in its pure form. A little hardener should be added to the paint, and then filtered. On the surface of plastic products, paint is applied using a spray gun in one layer. Then let the paint dry and put the door in place.
  • Vinyl film sticker. If there is no opportunity and desire to paint, you can stick vinyl film on the old door, choosing the appropriate pattern and color. For high-quality gluing of the film, the plastic surface must be degreased, and then washed with soapy water. Apply the film to a clean and dry surface and smooth it; after a few seconds, you can remove the white base.
  • Pasting with veneer. Also treat the surface of the door and glue the veneer parts onto it with a hot iron. This option is acceptable and reliable. Natural material lasts longer than artificial panels.

Do not forget to update the door frame, because it cannot be replaced, gaps may form between the frame and the canvas. It also requires replacement of fittings and the door will become like new.

What about metal?

You can update not only the interior doors, but also the entrance door, made of metal. To do this, remove it and put it on a horizontal flat surface, so it will be more convenient to work. Then execute in sequence:

  • Remove or close fittings with construction tape: peephole, handle and other components.
  • Use a drill or a wire brush to clean corroded areas. Sand the surface of the web with coarse sandpaper, remove dust with a vacuum cleaner and treat the web with a solvent.
  • Treat the surface with a special compound for polish, but intended for cars. Putty for wood products cannot be used - it gives poor adhesion to a metal surface. Car polish will seal all dents, scratches that have arisen during the cleaning process from rust. Apply a flat surface with a spatula and let the canvas dry for 30-40 minutes.
  • Polish the surface to be restored with fine-grain sandpaper, wipe with a damp cloth and degrease with a special grease remover.
  • Prime the surface with a corrosion-resistant metal primer. It is convenient to apply it with a roller or a narrow brush. Let it dry and sand again with fine-grained emery paper.
  • To paint the surface with the selected paint in 2-3 layers - it is important to achieve the desired rich result. Each new layer is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. It is recommended to use a roller, brush or spray gun for painting. Protect yourself from paint exposure by using gloves and a respirator.

The same should be done to restore the door frame.

Then release the hardware from the adhesive tape or mount it again and hang the door in its place.

If only a section of the canvas is damaged, only it can be updated, however, this will require a careful selection of paint by tone.

Restoring old doors with your own hands is an interesting and exciting job.

You can choose an acceptable canvas, choose the right material and dream up with the decor.

In addition, you can significantly save on the replacement of doors, and this is an important fact for the family budget.

Do-it-yourself renovated doors are a reason for the pride of the owner of the house. And how to repair them - you can watch the video:

The interior door occupies an important place in the interior of the room. It serves not only as an obstacle to noise, delimits space and allows privacy, but is also a noticeable decor item.

There are several reasons that may motivate you to decorate the interior door:

  1. Firstly, despite the huge selection of ready-made (and very attractive) doors, it is sometimes very difficult to find the right model. Sometimes all the doors seem to be the same - "I've already seen this one at the neighbors'", "and this one looks like the door to our office." You don't want to repeat yourself and acquire something unoriginal and which has become banal, because your interior is unique, so the door must match.
  2. Secondly, even an old door with scratches, peeling paint and stains that cannot be removed is not known from what you often do not want to change! After all, any replacement of a door is also a replacement of the box itself, which is associated with dust, plaster, sealing of the resulting cracks, the need to change the wallpaper (at least around the new door) - in general, with local and sometimes overhaul.

That is why sometimes it is much easier for the owner to update an already installed door "on the spot", that is, without changing the whole box, right here in the room. Of course, in some cases you will still have to remove the door from the hinges, but this is much easier and faster than starting a full-fledged repair. Whatever the reasons that prompted you to start decorating the interior door, we will say right away that often you do not need practically anything for this, except the materials left over from the last repair.

And one should not think that real masters and needlewomen can cope with such a task - even a person who has never held a hammer or a brush in his hands can embody some of the ideas proposed in this article. And the result of your work in any case will be original, unusual and will become a source of pride - “here it is, our door, I made it myself (well, at least decorated it)”.

So, we offer you 14 ideas for decorating an interior door, which you may want to bring to life by decorating your interior.

The first idea. We paint, just paint

The easiest way, without frills and unnecessary work, to put the door in order. To do this, you will first need to remove the door from the hinges, then walk along it with a spatula, removing the old paint, level the surface with sandpaper, seal cracks and scratches with putty, remove grease stains, seal the glass with masking tape so as not to stain, and you can take it in hand roller or brush! It is better to choose acrylic paint - it dries faster, and painting the door in a horizontal position - so the paint will not drain and will lay down more evenly. However, if it is convenient for you to do all of the above on a vertically standing door, you can not remove it from its hinges. Just remember to put something on the floor while painting so as not to stain the linoleum or laminate flooring.

White, plain painted door. It will not be difficult to update it or repaint it in a different color, although moldings and carvings need special, careful handling when sanding and removing a layer of old paint

Second idea. We paint in several colors

The option is more complicated, although it is also associated with staining. In this case, we do not just paint the door in one color, but create a simple or complex geometric pattern from stripes, squares, rhombuses, and so on. The door must first be prepared, as in the first case - that is, cleaned of old paint and level the surface. However, in this case, we will need much more masking tape - it is with its help that you delimit the zones between stripes or rectangles. In addition, in order not to buy several cans of paint of different colors, you can buy white paint (one liter for the door is quite enough), as well as several dyes with which you can experiment with shades.

Gold and white, blue and pale pink, bright stripes on a neutral background, rhombuses and winding lines - a variety of patterns and color combinations can appear on the canvas of your door

When choosing a geometric pattern, remember that a wide strip along the entire door leaf is more suitable for the country style, and for the classics it is better to choose other options, for example, paint the upper part of the door in a lighter shade and divide the parts with a horizontal strip

Third idea. Select moldings

Also painting the door, which in general is not too different from the first option. However, in this case, we will focus on the moldings, painting them in a contrasting color. White and black are a great combination, but already well-worn, so think about which colors would work best together. Designers have long recognized white and green, blue and yellow, red and dark blue as an excellent option. Such a door will look great both in a bohemian boudoir and in a strict classic living room.

The white door with highlighted black moldings is a real classic. By the way, if your door does not have such decorations, it is easy to make them yourself - special wooden thin strips are sold, which are simply nailed to the canvas

An unexpectedly bright, pink door that looks particularly aristocratic and attractive thanks to the white frames

The fourth idea. We paint according to the finished stencil

A very convenient and easy way to turn your door into a work of art, even if you do not have the talent of an artist. Ready-made stencils can be purchased in construction and specialized stores, or ordered on one of the sites, and the choice of drawings and patterns is very large. Then we simply apply the stencil to the already prepared door and paint. Easy, fast and the result is very beautiful!

Drawing on a ready-made stencil is as easy as shelling pears, and the choice will allow you to choose an original inscription, an exotic pattern, and an unusual picture

Such a deliberately simple drawing can be easily created without stencils. It was the uneven lines and simplicity that became its main highlight.

Fifth idea. Art painting

Unlike all of the already listed options for decorating a door, this option is not for everyone. To create a real masterpiece on an ordinary door, you will need the talent of an artist and certain skills in working with brushes, since a roller is no longer enough here. Imagine that your door is a blank white canvas, on which, thanks to your skill, a beautiful landscape, a cheerful painting or an exquisite pattern will appear. Thin hand-painted painting always looks expensive and stylish, and you can achieve this effect by spending money only on buying paints.

Many European companies offer ready-made interior doors with artistic painting. They are, of course, not cheap, so you can try to create something similar with your own hands. Are you afraid it won't work? You can always just paint over a bad drawing!

Sixth idea. Children's creativity

Does your kid love to paint? Give him such an opportunity - let him decorate the door to the children's room. Yes, such a naive, bright drawing would be out of place in a strict living room, but as a decoration for a children's room it is a great option. Just agree with the young artist that the second half of the door is already your field for the embodiment of fantasies!

Usually, children's paints can be washed off very easily, so your aspiring artist can paint the door again every day. But you will have to pre-prepare the canvas, putting the door in order.

The seventh idea. Unusual texture with paint

If you think that just applying paint is boring, and you are afraid to take up hand painting, you can try to achieve unusual textures, for example, the effect of a wooden surface or an antique door using very simple tools. So, using a sponge, you can get a spotty surface, steel wool will help to achieve the effect of an old door, a hard brush - to create an expressive surface of denim. Special ready-made paints are also on sale, perfectly imitating jeans, wood, canvas, velvet or slate boards.

On such a door, painted to resemble a slate board, it is convenient to leave messages to household members

Eighth idea. Wallpaper

If all the previous ideas concerned only working with paints and brushes, then this method is suitable for those who do not want to mess with paint. Wall murals will instantly transform the appearance of your interior door, turning it into a striking design element. Of course, it is best to purchase wallpaper designed specifically for doors - in this case, your drawing will definitely look complete. Ready-made wallpaper usually has a standard size of 86x220 centimeters, so they are suitable only for standard doors, and without moldings and glass inserts. However, now many online stores offer custom-made door murals, so you can choose the option that is ideal for your door, with any pattern. You can trim doors and regular wall murals to fit, but this may make the drawing look unfinished.

How do you like such an unusual option - a door, with the help of photo wallpaper, turned into a telephone booth?

Before gluing the wallpaper, the door must be cleaned of stains, and the surface must be leveled, sanded and degreased with a solvent. You can use regular wallpaper glue, but PVA is much more reliable. The disadvantages of this option for decorating the door include the fact that a bright image will immediately catch the eye, so it can quickly get bored. In addition, photowall-paper on the door, due to frequent touches, will lose its original attractiveness. However, no one will prevent you from changing the photo wallpaper on the door to something more original in a couple of months.

Photo wallpapers with picturesque landscapes are especially popular.

Photo wallpaper on the door will help make a small room visually larger due to the increased panoramic perspective. And it is very easy to stick them on, for this you don't even need to remove the door from its hinges

The ninth idea. Regular wallpaper

Previously, this decor was very popular, but now many designers consider it bad manners. This does not prevent the usual wallpaper, "migrated" to the door, to remain a popular way of decorating the interior. Paper and vinyl wallpaper is especially popular in Sweden, the USA and Canada. By the way, there is no need to hide the entire door behind the wallpaper - on the contrary, the wallpaper, divided into clear "compartments" thanks to moldings, looks especially interesting. The remaining surfaces of the door can be simply painted by choosing a shade that matches the color of the wallpaper. Alternatively, you can buy cork wallpaper and varnish it on top for reliability. Their unusual texture will make the door more original.

Preparing the door is exactly the same as in the case of using photo wallpaper. The main advantage is low cost, since you can use wallpaper left over from previous repairs, and ease of decoration. The main disadvantage is quick wear - wallpaper can peel off and tear at the joints.

Wallpaper glued not on the entire door, but on the parts highlighted by moldings, look more impressive

The door, covered with the same wallpaper as the walls, will literally merge with the interior. On the reverse side, the door, of course, is pasted over with other wallpaper so as not to stand out against the background of the wall of another room

Idea ten. Fabric instead of wallpaper

This option will look especially cute and home-like. The door decorated with fabric looks original, the choice of fabrics is surprisingly wide today, but this method also has its drawbacks.

If you choose a single piece of fabric to decorate the door, you should take care of the original drawing

First, when choosing a fabric, you should make sure that the glue will not stain it. Secondly, the edges of the fabric must be pre-processed, otherwise the protruding threads will not look very aesthetically pleasing. Thirdly, fabric-decorated doors are not suitable for every style of interior design. Those who are fond of patchwork, that is, creating canvases from different pieces of fabric, can turn their door into a real applique made of bright patches. By the way, if there is a place for a glass insert on the door, you can hang a small curtain here, fixing it on a fishing line and small nails.

Very nice door, decorated with patchwork technology. The trouble is that such bright patches have nothing to do with the classic style of the interior, this is an option, rather, for a "rustic" and colorful country

The eleventh idea. Posters, cards, paper

An option for creative people and a great idea for a teen's room. The door can be decorated with a poster and a picture of your favorite artist or band, sheets from an old geographic atlas or sheet music. Sticking on such paper sheets and posters is as easy as using regular wallpaper.

An old geographical map will be appropriate even on the interior door of an ordinary living room, but it is better to "settle" posters in a teenager's room

Idea twelfth. All kinds of stickers

This simple and not too expensive way of door decoration is becoming more and more popular today. Vinyl stickers can be purchased in online stores, the cost of a model of the size of a standard door starts at 2.5 thousand rubles, they are glued very easily, and will last longer than ordinary photo wallpapers.

Stickers with such funny and at the same time useful inscriptions will not only decorate the doors, but also cheer up the guests

If you do not want to hide the entire door behind the stickers, it is quite possible to purchase small images - a butterfly, a bright flower, and so on. They cost less, and the outer appearance of the door will change thoroughly. "Informative" stickers are also popular, for example, on the door of an office, bathroom or toilet, which will tell guests what is hidden behind this door.

The elegant lady on this sticker will immediately inform the guests of the house that it is behind this door that the bathroom is hidden.

Often, the stickers can look like ordinary photo wallpaper, and sometimes like hand-painted on a white door or a child's drawing.

Thirteenth idea. Decoupage

The technology of scrupulous cutting out of the vending images from paper and further composing applications from these pieces allows you to transform not only a casket or photo album cover, but also an ordinary door. Everything that a novice master of the ancient art of decoupage will need: paper drawings, napkins with a pattern you like, postcards and the like - everything from which you can cut a picture, a brush, PVA glue, scissors, glitter, acrylic varnish, contour and acrylic paint.

In the decoupage process, you can use literally anything - from scraps of old newspapers to greeting cards.

In a brief description, the process looks like this: apply a layer of white acrylic paint to the door surface, wait for it to dry, then another layer - and wait again until it is completely dry. Then we apply a layer of paint of the selected shade, and then we attach the cut paper drawings with PVA glue. At the same time, we try to glue the piece as evenly as possible, without folds and expel all air bubbles. With the help of glitter and contour, we can draw dots, stripes and other small details. Then cover the finished painting with a layer of varnish. That's all. The rest is your imagination and beautifully selected drawings.

The decoupage technique allows you to create amazingly beautiful paintings, and the varnish coating will extend the life of the decor

Idea fourteen. Mosaic

A door decorated with bright mosaics will be an excellent option for a bathroom; you can also decorate a metal entrance door in this way. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to use pieces of ceramics for these purposes - in this case, the door may turn out to be too heavy. Mosaics can be created from pieces of wood or veneer, or purchased ready-made made of glass.

In this case, bright glass mosaic takes up most of the door, making it very unusual and cheerful.

The mosaic is fastened with special glue ("Moment" or liquid nails will do) on the prepared and cleaned surface. It is worthwhile to think over all the details of the pattern in advance by drawing a diagram of the arrangement of the pieces with a pencil. By the way, you can decorate not only the door itself with a mosaic, but also the box, highlighting the slopes using the selected pattern.

Creating a mosaic pattern is a huge scope for creativity. And if some part does fall, you can always attach it back

An old door can become a real art object, just a little imagination and effort. To begin with, you can use one of the simplest ideas, and then, having got a taste, try yourself in the art of decoupage or painting. In any case, your door will definitely be one of a kind!

Doors play an important role in interior design. There are many different models in stores, but high-quality ones cost a lot of money, and you usually don't want to look at cheap ones. There is a good option - to update the old doors with your own hands. There are many techniques, and not the most difficult ones, that allow you to fix the situation for little money.

Training

Whichever way you choose to update the old interior door, you will need to carry out a number of preparatory work. Usually old painted specimens are going to decorate. Painting is usually amateur, so there are more than enough irregularities, sagging and other small defects. All of them must be aligned.

We remove the door leaf from the hinges, lay it on a flat surface. You can - on the trestle or table. We take putty on wood (even if they are from or) and we cover all holes, chips and depressions with it. After drying, proceed to the next step - sanding.

We take sandpaper with a coarse grain and a fine one. We process, achieving a flat surface. If you work by hand, it takes a lot of time and effort. With a hand sander, work moves faster. If further painting is planned, we try to achieve the most even surface. If you plan to decorate with wallpaper, fabric, self-adhesive film, you may not bring it to the ideal, but it should be exactly.

Next, remove the dust, wash off the remnants with water and diluted dishwashing detergent. We dry it. Further actions depend on the selected update method. If you are going to glue any kind of fabric or wallpaper, you can prime the surface (with liquid diluted glue or a special primer). After the primer has dried, you can glue the chosen type of decor or apply paint. By the way, if you are going to paint the doors, the paint must be of the same type, which was before, otherwise you will have to remove everything to a clean base, and this is very difficult.

Refresh old doors with wallpaper

The easiest and most affordable way to make old doors attractive is to use wallpaper. They do not necessarily have to be in tune with the walls, although this option is not excluded. First, we prepare the canvas as described above, and then you can start finishing.

The procedure for wallpapering doors is as follows:

Wallpaper

Modern photo printing allows you to transfer volumetric images to paper. It will turn out very nicely. And you can print any image of your choice. In general, any. Usually advertising agencies are engaged in photo printing, sometimes printing houses. Go there, explaining what you need (have a flash drive with the selected pattern and the exact dimensions of the canvas on which you want to print the image). Having received the required image, we glue it on the door according to the method. described above.

Wallpaper with moldings

If you stick foam or polyurethane moldings, sockets on plain wallpaper, the style will completely change. Doors of this type are suitable for classic interiors or rooms; when using a colorful background and another shape of moldings (with rounding), they can be decorated in the Provence style.

The work is no different from the sequence described above. We take the prepared doors with a leveled surface, spread with glue, glue the wallpaper.

It is not difficult to achieve good results by leveling the panels with a rubber roller, but a certain amount of small air bubbles remains. To remove them, they take a special plastic spatula (they are in any hardware store), and air is finally removed from the center to the edges. This spatula is also used to iron the wallpaper joint, if any. It is quite possible to achieve that the joint will not be visible.

Cut the edges of the wallpaper with a wallpaper knife. This should be done until the wallpaper has softened from the glue, otherwise they can then "reach" for the blade and break. We leave to dry. After 12 hours or in a day - depending on the temperature and humidity in the room - you can continue decorating the old door.

Gently, with a simple pencil, we apply the markup. When everything is drawn, measure the required length of the pieces of molding with a tape measure. Cut off, saw the edges at an angle of 45 °. We take a suitable glue (PVA can be used) and carefully smear the back surface of the cut elements, glue them along the markings, leave to dry.

By the same principle, you can update old doors so that the style will be different. Several examples in the photo gallery.

Moldings were glued to the painted doors, which were then painted with "gold" paint

Designer decoration of old doors

If you are interested in design things, you can try turning it into an art object. The good news is that there is no need to cook it: the bumps and bumps will disappear under the design.

The decorating process begins with the manufacture of papier-mâché. Take egg trays, spray with water, knead with your fist, trying to level the surface. In the process, they will tear, this is normal and even good - we need small pieces. These almost flat fragments, on liquid nails or using a glue gun, are glued to the surface in random order.

Lids, rings, a small perfume bottle, a small non-working computer mouse, the remains of a mosaic, everything that comes to hand are used. There will be a lot of trash, you can collect it ahead of time.

When most of the surface is "decorated", we take acrylic silver paint in cans (2 pieces are needed) and paint over the decor well. When choosing a paint, it is better to take an expensive one, in particular a German one, so that it does not pour out afterwards.

Decorating doors using decoupage technique

A romantic or "fun" door design can be done using decoupage. For work you will need:

  • napkins with a suitable pattern;
  • pVA glue (about 200 ml);
  • natural bristle brush;
  • acrylic lacquer.

Preparing the canvas, as described earlier. We prime and paint in a suitable color. After the paint has dried, start decorating. We take a pack of napkins we like, separate the top layer, which is with a picture.

Tear napkins with a pattern lengthwise into three strips. We tear, we do not cut. We want a slightly uneven edge. Two stripes on one side get an even edge, we put them to one side. We break the middle part into squares. The best option if they are 3-4 cm on a side.

We take glue, a brush, a small container. In it we mix PVA with water in equal proportions.

Next, we start decorating the door with our own hands. We take a strip with an even edge, apply it to the area to be decorated (in this case, this is the center of the door leaf). Dip the brush in glue, with it we begin to smooth the fragment in different directions. Wrinkles are formed, but this is just not bad - a more textured finish will turn out, so there is no particular need to align them. Wet wipes are very delicate and elastic, remember this when working, act carefully.

Gradually make a frame with one smooth edge. The second turns out to be carelessly torn.

Filling in the middle of the "frame"

When the entire surface is filled, we leave it for a day - we wait until the PVA dries. Next, take an acrylic varnish and cover our decor with a soft brush. To prevent it from smelling, we take a water-based varnish. It is a little more expensive, but it doesn't have a headache.

The beauty of decoupage is that we get beautiful things at low cost.

Door decoration with self-adhesive film

Perhaps the easiest way is to update old doors with self-adhesive. All you need:

  • the film itself,
  • a spray bottle containing soap and water;
  • plastic spatula or soft rag;
  • sharp knife (wallpaper can be used).

This film is available in different versions - there is a monochromatic matte or glossy, there is a monochromatic one with holographic patterns, wood imitation, there are even special doors for pasting with printed photo.

Regardless of the type of film, it is glued in the same way. In this case, they decided to update the old doors using the option with photo printing. One moment: before pasting, we remove handles, latches and other door hardware.

For the decor to be of high quality, the surface of the door must be clean, even and smooth. If you sanded it before doing this, try gluing on a small piece of film. If it sticks well, everything is fine. If "does not stick", the doors will have to be primed, and then painted or varnished - to create a smooth surface.

We take a spray bottle and evenly wet the door surface.

We shave the film, remove the protective layer from one of the corners, and spray it. So, wetting, we separate the protective paper from the upper part along the entire width of the film.

You should get a strip 15-20 cm wide. Do not remove any more so that the film does not stick to the canvas. We apply the removed part to the upper edge of the door leaf (or the area to be decorated), it quickly sticks. Try to immediately apply evenly, but the position can be corrected - for this we wetted the surface so that the film could be moved. If you pull it, it moves a little.

After making sure that the canvas lies flat, take a plastic spatula (for wallpaper) and smooth the surface with it, moving from the center to the edges. The task is to remove all the air. Since the surface is wet, it is not difficult - water displaces air.

The rest is simple. We pull down the protective paper, peeling off the strip, glue it and so on - to the very bottom of the door. If you have glued the upper part for a long time, the lower one may dry out, therefore periodically check if the doors are dry, and spray again if necessary.

After the entire film has been glued, cut off the excess at the edges with a sharp knife. All that remains after this is to install the fittings.

Door decor with stencils

Old doors can be renovated with applied drawings. The only pity is that not everyone has artistic talents. But in this case, the problem is solved using stencils. You can draw them yourself, or you can find the image you like, print it on thick paper, cut out the drawing with a sharp knife, leaving jumpers in places. So the stencil is ready.

The disadvantage of a paper stencil is that it does not last long. If you need a "long-playing", you need to transfer it to a transparent dense film. In more detail, the technology for cutting a stencil for door decoration is shown in the video.

The drawing can be anything. Both geometric and floral, stylized images of animals, birds, cartoon characters are popular.
