How long does varnish and paint and other coatings dry in heat, cold, or wet weather?

The recommended temperature threshold for painting should not be less than +5 degrees C. If, for objective reasons, there is an urgent need to varnish the floor at negative temperatures, you should pay close attention to the preliminary preparation of the surface.

In addition to the fact that any floor must be cleaned of traces of the old coating, cleaned, washed and dried, there are additional recommendations for the preparation of various materials varnished surface at temperatures below 0 С:

  • concrete floors should be painted or varnished no earlier than a year after creation, so that the surface is "dust-free". Without preliminary exposure, paintwork can be carried out on bulk concrete floors in workshops, hangars, warehouses;
  • preliminarily remove the metal floor from moisture or ice and treat it with a torch (gasoline or gas);
  • It is extremely undesirable to varnish a wooden floor at low temperatures due to frozen particles of moisture in the porous structure of the tree - the surface is unevenly protected by paintwork. Make sure the base does not contain excess moisture you can use a piece of tape glued to the floor surface for a day. If during this time condensation does not appear on the tape, varnishing and painting can be carried out.

What is the minus temperature that wood varnish can withstand?

Modern manufacturers of paint and varnish materials, due to additional inclusions, have ensured that their products can withstand short-term subzero temperatures. However, temperatures below -5 C are harmful to products coated with wood varnish.

Experienced builders advise covering the indoor floor with outdoor varnish, which can withstand lower temperature conditions, but there are also pitfalls here. If a large traffic is planned in the room, that is, the load on the surface, the varnish for outdoor work will undergo very rapid abrasion and become covered with "paths".

What else is worth thinking about when painting at low temperatures?

For a high-quality result, namely - for an ideal varnished surface, you must remember about such nuances as:

  1. Quality tools. Ideal wood varnish brush- wide and flat. The bristles can be either natural or artificial. The basic rule is that artificial pile should not be painted, otherwise the surface will acquire a dirty shade with stains;
  2. Well-chosen varnish. In order for the result to meet expectations, carefully study all the proposals of paint and varnish manufacturers. Do not hesitate to contact the specialists of building stores or online markets for help: one "missed" question threatens not the most impressive effect from the work done.
  3. The varnish applied at low temperatures dries 3 times longer. Professionals in such cases recommend covering the object with scaffolding with film and providing a thermal gun after applying paintwork.

Before deciding on such a desperate act as varnishing the floor at sub-zero temperatures, repeatedly weigh the pros and cons. The formation of condensation, which negatively affects adhesion, is inevitable under such conditions. This means that such a coating will not differ in durability.

Are there facade paints that can be applied at subzero temperatures?

Facade paints, which can be applied at low temperatures, are called all-season (or winter) paints.

All-weather acrylic frost-resistant paint Akrial-Lux specially designed for harsh climatic conditions, including areas with sudden changes in weather conditions. Winter paint is used for painting facades made of concrete, foam concrete, asbestos cement in all climatic zones, in industrial centers with high atmospheric pollution.

All-season winter paint for facade works Akrial-Lux possesses high resistance to ultraviolet and weathering, forms a durable vapor-permeable coating. Has excellent adhesion to concrete, foam concrete, asbestos cement, brick, plaster.

Is it possible to paint the facade of a wooden house in rainy or cold weather?

It fits well on surfaces previously painted with oil, alkyd, latex and other paints (with the exception of lime paints).

All season winter paint Akrial-Lux applied to the surface with a brush, roller or spray gun in 1-2 layers. Painting work should be carried out at an air temperature of at least -20 ° C, provided that the surface to be treated is dry and not icy. Winter paint significantly increases the moisture resistance, weather resistance and service life of the facade.

For the restoration and restoration of building facades, a special restoration paint is used. Facade... This special paint is recommended to be used for particularly critical and construction and restoration work on the most complex objects.

print version

The main part of painting works is carried out at positive temperatures, the lowest recommended threshold is +5 C. However, sometimes there is an urgent need to paint, for example, the facade of a building, in negative temperatures. This may be due to both the renovation of the building's appearance and the delivery of the object on time.

How does facade paint behave at sub-zero temperatures

In addition, there are also objective production reasons for these works at temperatures below 0 C.

Rules and recommendations for painting surfaces at subzero temperatures

Compliance general principles painting technology, implies a thorough preparation of the surface for painting. Everything is thoroughly cleaned of traces of old paint, processed with sandpaper, putty is applied to all irregularities, and, if necessary, covered with a primer. So, before painting, the wall or surface to be painted must be clean and dry.

- metal color

If we are going to paint the metal, then there should be no condensation or ice on it. Mechanical cleaning of the surface will not work, there will still be a thin layer invisible to the eye. Therefore, in addition to removing microparticles of moisture, it is recommended to treat the surface with a torch of a gas or petrol burner.

- wood color

It is categorically not recommended to paint the tree in the cold season.

This is due to the fact that there is always a certain percentage of moisture between the wood fibers. With negative values, the water between the fibers turns into ice and the surface is inferiorly impregnated with paintwork. If, nevertheless, there is an urgent need, stick a piece of adhesive tape 5 * 5 cm on a wooden surface and, if after a day condensation does not appear on the adhesive tape, then such a surface is more or less suitable for painting. Therefore, when painting wood, you must make sure that the substrate is free of frozen water.

- concrete painting

Concrete, like wood, has a porous structure. In addition, outdoor concrete structures are susceptible to weathering. Another feature of concrete is that it is advisable to paint it no earlier than 1 year after installation. This is due to its hygroscopicity and the need for dedusting. Basically, in negative temperatures, without preliminary exposure, the self-leveling concrete floor is painted in hangars, workshops and warehouses handed over to the customer.

- painting of bricks, plastered surfaces

Applicable general technology surface preparation before painting.

In such a boundary state, condensation forms on the surface to be painted, especially metal. The value of paint for condensation, even if imperceptible, will impair adhesion and significantly reduce the polymer properties of the paint used. In the future, this will certainly affect the quality and durability of the entire coating.

When painting objects in freezing temperatures, be sure to keep in mind that the drying time for paintwork materials can be 2-3 times longer than that for painting at a positive outdoor temperature. Therefore, after applying paintwork materials to the surface, it is advisable to overlap the object with scaffolding with a film and additionally provide a thermal gun.

The choice of paint must be taken very seriously. The final result of the work depends on your choice - the durability and quality of the resulting protective coating.

Paints that are used at low temperatures

Universal(wood, concrete, plaster, brick)

Tikkurila Euro Facade(up to -20 C)

For topcoat the paint is applied without dilution. After drying, a durable matte finish is obtained. When using, the temperature of the applied paint must be at least +10 C. Consumption 1l. / 6m2.

Metal

Miranol is a thixotropic (jelly) high gloss alkyd enamel, diluted up to 30% by volume. Good light and weather resistance. Consumption 1l / 12-14m2.

Pansarimaali- excellent alkyd semi-gloss paint with active anti-corrosion properties. Mainly used for painting roofs, gutters, railings and similar metal structures. At negative temperatures, it needs to be diluted up to 30% with a solvent. Consumption 1l / 8-12m2.

Garden- semi-matt alkyd enamel with excellent wear-resistant characteristics. When working below 0 C, it needs to be diluted with solvents up to 30% by volume. Consumption 1l / 8-12m2.

So, thanks to modern paintwork materials, the possibility of painting any surfaces at low temperatures has become possible.

Advantages of paint on rust

V repair work we are often faced with the need for coloring metal pipes and metal structures, as well as others metal products... The big problem here is that often the metal oxidizes in the presence of moisture, rusts. To remove rust from metal, you need it mechanical cleaning, then anti-corrosion treatment and painting. This is a very troublesome undertaking, often details of structures are inaccessible for cleaning rust.

Finally, in order to facilitate this process, rust paints were created, they are also very beautiful as decorative coating... These are modern broad-spectrum paints.

The advantages of this type of paint:

  • applied directly to rusty surfaces
  • creates a coating on metal that repels water and dirt
  • well covers the base
  • strong adhesion to the base
  • anti-corrosion
  • fast drying
  • the coating is durable, up to 8 years
  • wealth of colors

Disadvantages of this type of paint:

  • you cannot paint objects with it that are heated to more than 150 degrees Celsius.
  • objects painted with this paint must not come into contact with drinking water

Types of paints for rust

To achieve the desired effect when processing these paints, it is necessary to understand their types and areas of applicability. Rust paints are classified according to the base substance, purpose and maximum temperature use, the number of components. So, there are water-borne paints with phosphoric acid, they are the cheapest, but they have low resistance to the environment; there are two-component with additives epoxy resins, polyurethane, and corrosion inhibitors. According to the basic substance, paints are divided into:

  1. Epoxy. Toxic, do not use in everyday life. Suitable for highly heated steel structures.
  2. Oil. Contains drying oil and natural oils... Not resistant to temperature. Outdoor corrosion protection is low, suitable for indoor use.
  3. Alkyd. For galvanized metal. Excessively flammable, cannot be used for highly heated steel structures. Very adhesive.
  4. Acrylic. Long-lasting anti-corrosion protection. Suitable for highly heated structures, such as heating elements, indoors and outdoors.
  5. Special paint for rust 3 in 1. Reduces the cost and shortens the restoration of rusted metal. Can be quickly applied directly to untreated metal. Low cost. Includes resins, anti-corrosion elements. Highly adhesive, dries quickly, protects for up to 8 years.
  6. Hammer paints. Provides a roughened, metallic sheen, similar to a hammer.

    Alkyds, acrylics, epoxies, aluminum powder are used in the paint. Also gives glossy and semi-matt shades. Also suitable for non-ferrous metals. The primer may not be used before application. The first layer acts as a primer, the second is anti-corrosion, the third acts as the actual enamel. Do not paint objects heated above 150 degrees.

  7. Anti-corrosion paints for car body repair.
  8. Aerosol form. It has many functions, convenient for touch-up in areas of paint defects and difficult access. Also suitable for non-ferrous metals and other natural materials... The universal grade of this paint also serves as a primer, anti-corrosion and decorative.

Methods for protecting metal from rust:

  • Active electrochemical protection
  • Galvanic protective protection
  • Cold galvanized matella
  • Sealing of rust in a polymer film, metal painting
  • Phosphating, rust transformation

Rust paint for outdoor use

Metal structures where anti-corrosion painting is required:

  • plumbing and heating pipes
  • metal fences
  • metal structures of an architectural plan
  • greenhouses
  • bars, gates

Surface paint on rust

In order to achieve the expected effect during the repair, it is necessary to correctly follow the stages of processing the object with these paints. You need to carefully follow the sequence of actions, otherwise your work may turn out to be defective.

  1. Heating systems should be painted only when they are turned off; use heat-resistant paint that can withstand up to 150 degrees.
  2. Furnaces are painted with compounds that can withstand up to 500 degrees.
  3. Non-ferrous metals require special primers.
  4. Open air facilities require organic solvents.
  5. If the rust is loose, it must be removed first, otherwise the paint will peel off.
  6. Before using the paint, check that its heat resistance corresponds to the heating temperature of the product to be painted.

Best paint for rust

The price depends on the firm and on the components.

Let's pay attention only to the most widely used types of paints, the high quality of which has been proven in practice.

Rust Hammerite:

Most popular. It can be used to achieve a glossy, hammer-like and slightly matte effect. Does not allow dirt to accumulate on the structure. It is used in the design of cottages, in industrial construction, in roofing works, in the painting of communications, industrial and agricultural equipment, various metal structures. The surface does not need to be cleaned.

PromAlpForum

Withstands from -20 to + 80 degrees of temperature. The paint serves as a primer, rust converter and decorative coating at the same time. Dries quickly, apply several layers per day. It is necessary to ensure that the surface does not exfoliate before painting. Cannot be used together with bituminous materials... Non-ferrous metals must be primed first.

Rust enamel primers:

They are very convenient to use, they really facilitate the process of removing rust when applied. They give a 3-in-1 effect, i.e. act simultaneously as a primer, anti-corrosion agent and decorative coating. The surface is cleaned of dirt, degreased with White Spirit, rust is cleaned with a spatula, metal brush or emery. Mix and apply two layers at intervals of 30 minutes to 5 hours. If this time has expired, the second coat can only be painted after 30 days.

Other Popular Top-Selling Rust Paints:

  1. Enamel-primer “Rust-Eater-Universal. Cleans and primes the base. The filled color is created with a second layer.
  2. Paint "Nerzhamet". On alkyd based, quick-drying, anti-corrosion.
  3. Iron red lead paint. Good lays down, masks flaws. Does not have a strong effect against rust. Low price.
  4. Alpina priming enamel (Direct auf Rost). Lead-free unlike many other paints. Does not smell, creates durable coating, fits well. Beforehand, it is enough to remove dirt from the metal.

In general, when using paint on rust, it is important to read the instructions carefully because there can be significant differences in application. different varieties these paints. At the same time, it should be noted that in some instructions the quality of the paint is somewhat overestimated, therefore it is necessary to check in other sources whether it is actually not necessary to prime the surface before use, as well as indicators such as, for example, the suitability of the paint at -20 degrees frost, are written only for force majeure, in reality this does not mean that it is usually used at such a temperature.

Any work in the cold is not comfortable, and if possible, it is better to postpone metal painting and spend in the warm season. What to do if the winter cold has already come, but all the planned work has not been completed on time in the warm season, and the metal structures outside are not painted?
There is an opinion that it is impossible to paint on the street in winter, or it will not work, however, it is erroneous and irrelevant. To date, developed lots of paints and varnishes that can be used in any weather.
For painting metal surfaces in winter, you can. For their use, a temperature range of -20 to + 35 ° C is permissible. At the same time, even the presence of moisture on the metal surface does not affect the quality of the coating and the convenience of painting.

If it is not possible to postpone painting the metal until warming, there are some factors to consider.
First of all, they should not contain ingredients that freeze at temperatures below -20 ° C.
It is necessary to completely exclude the use of alkyd and other paints and varnishes that increase the viscosity at low temperatures.
To remove frost covering the metal, it is necessary to treat the metal surface with the fire of a gasoline or gas burner. It is not recommended to use brushes and scrapers, as after their use the surface is not completely cleaned.
It is important to degrease the surface with acetone or isopropanol before applying the primer.

When carrying out painting work in winter time for priming a metal surface, a special frost-resistant primer is used, while it is necessary to select a composition for this type of metal.
The primer provides protection against corrosion and improves the adhesion of the topcoat.

If necessary, using a special brush, before starting work, the surface is thoroughly cleaned of loose rust and dirt that create irregularities.

Consumption of anticorrosive paints and varnishes for painting metal surfaces in winter is the same as in warm weather. All materials intended for application at low temperatures are fast drying. The finished coating does not react to precipitation within an hour after application. So, with an air humidity of 80-95% and a temperature of -15 ° C, the time for complete drying will be 2-3 hours.

The service life of the coating applied at low temperatures reaches 10 years, subject to painting technologies.

Should I paint the fence in winter?

What to do if the outside temperature is below 0 ° C and you need to paint a metal fence.
When the temperature changes, the metal does not change its structure, does not absorb water. At elevated temperatures, the fence from the leaf can stretch a little, and when it cools, it returns its shape. intended for painting metal adapting after application, they form an elastic film on the surface.
For painting metal fences in winter, enamels are used that are designed to work at low temperatures. The necessary properties are possessed by alkyd paints solvent-based, do not change consistency at low temperatures.
Metal paints can also be used to paint wooden surfaces.
Before painting, the surface of the metal fence is dried and degreased with special means.
For painting, they use not a cold, but a warm coloring composition with a temperature above 0 ° C.
If when painting large structures it takes a long time, then the container with paint is placed in warm water to maintain the desired consistency of the composition.
Special enamels intended for painting metal in winter dry from 1 to 3 hours, and ordinary enamels - from 3 to 7 days.

Effective enamels, intended for use in winter, do not freeze in frost, are suitable as for metal and for wood, combine anti-corrosion, antifungal and fire-fighting properties, even in extreme weather conditions form an elastic covering layer, dries quickly compared to conventional dyes.

It is possible to paint a metal fence and other metal products in winter. The main thing is to choose the right surface for this. Each package of the product always contains information about the method of application.

Industrial and construction complexes in our country do not take breaks for the winter, which means that the paint and varnish industry must also meet similar requirements. Despite the fact that most enamels and varnishes require application at temperatures above 0 ° C, modern technologies allow the production of a number of materials suitable for painting in the cold season.

Regardless of the material that is selected depending on the needs, the application itself at subzero temperatures has a number of features.

Firstly, surface preparation is an important factor when painting in the cold season. If metal is to be painted, then it must be thoroughly cleaned of condensation and ice. And since in most cases brushes and scrapers are impossible to handle thin layer ice, it is recommended to additionally warm up the surface with a gas torch.

Secondly, painting at temperatures between -5 ° C and 5 ° C should be avoided, since it is in this temperature range that condensation and dew form on the metal surface. To avoid moisture condensation, the temperature of the surface to be painted must be at least 3 ° C above the dew point.

Third, in winter period it is advisable to degrease metal surfaces with acetone or R-4 or R-5 solvents.

Fourth, even if the manufacturer allows painting at temperatures below 0 ° C, such weather conditions cannot but affect the drying time of the coating - compared to the indicators specified in the quality certificate, it will increase by 2 or even 3 times.

Separately, mention should be made of the storage of enamel - regardless of its composition, it should be stored exclusively in a warm room, in the future, the surface to be painted and the paint should be at the same temperature. If possible, then the surface to be painted must be warmed up.

The choice of paint and varnish material also needs to be taken extremely seriously, because the final result depends on this choice - the durability and functionality of the resulting coating.

1. Remove obvious rust mechanically. It is advisable to carry out a chemical treatment with the Ortamet composition. Wash off and degrease the metal surface after processing. R-5 solvents or Ortho xylene are recommended for cleaning.
2. Immediately before coating, it is recommended to wet the surface with a handwheel brush or with a spray gun with a specialized TDR solvent included in the material. This is necessary for better adhesion, as well as to replace moisture, ice and frost from the metal surface with a solvent. In the case of obvious ice, first, before wetting with a solvent, spray the surface with a torch from a propane burner.
3. Weather conditions such as snow blizzard freezing rain will affect appearance surface. The best for work in winter will be a windless sunny weather from 10 am to 3 pm.
4. Component A and component B must be mixed in portions, mixed, kept for 15-25 minutes and filtered through a nylon filter element of a cone or bag type. Pot life of the mixture is four to six hours. Preferably applied with a velor roller. Airless application with a 300 bar high pressure washer is permitted.
5. When carrying out painting work, it is necessary to have a comb-type thickness gauge. The wet layer thickness should be 120-150 microns. Drying "to touch" at -20 ° C will take no more than two to three hours, and the primary polymerization at a temperature of -20 ° C will take no more than three days. In case of urgent need, it is possible to apply wet on wet with an interval between layers of 3 hours.

Surface preparation for the operation of the coating in conditions (U) of temperate climatic zones

If, when viewed without magnifying devices, the surface is free of oil, grease and dirt, as well as easily separable mill scale, corrosion, paint coatings and foreign particles, then when preparing the surface, you can limit yourself to a metal brush and a chisel without etching and without abrasive blast cleaning: St2 - Thorough manual mechanical cleaning.

Due to the fact that solvent-borne acrylic copolymers reject oils and greases, it is necessary to COMPLETELY REMOVE residues of rolling oil and cutting fluid from products made of cold-rolled and chopped material. Note that lubricants can be masked by slight corrosion. If we apply the ORTAMET mordant on such a surface, we will see how the corrosion was pressed into phosphate, and the lubricant was released in free form. FORBIDDEN! the use of white spirit, solvent, gasoline, even for degreasing and washing tools.

For confident use in temperate (U) climatic zones, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory procedures, namely:
1 - surface preparation to St2 - "Thorough manual mechanical cleaning" when viewed without magnifying devices, the surface must be free of oil, grease and dirt, as well as easily separable mill scale, corrosion, paint coatings and foreign particles (3.1, Note 1 ) (photos B St 2, C St 2 and D St 2 according to the standard). GOST R ISO 8501-1-2014;

5 - decline

SEVERON applied in 2 - 4 layers with a total coating thickness of 200 to 400 microns. In two layers on clean or primed metal. Three to four coats when applied to a surface with traces of primary corrosion.

Surface preparation for the operation of the coating at a temperature of -60 ° in the conditions of HL and UHL climatic zones

Severon enamel primer as polymer film, maintains its performance at temperatures from -60C ° to + 125C °.

When operating in low temperatures down to -60C °, the condition of the surface you choose plays a very important role.

Hot rolled surfaces show the best results. Surfaces made of cold rolled and chopped materials, surfaces with varying degrees oxidation and scale, as well as previously painted surfaces, require careful preparation!

For reliable operation of the coating in the conditions of HL and UHL climatic zones at temperatures down to -60C °, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory procedures, namely:
1 - surface preparation to Sa 2? - "Ultra-meticulous abrasive blast cleaning", when viewed without the use of magnifying devices, the surface after cleaning must be free from oil, grease and dirt, as well as from mill scale, corrosion, paint coatings and foreign particles. Any remaining traces of cleaning are allowed in the form of pale spots, dots or stripes (photographs A Sa 2 ½, B Sa 2 ½, C Sa 2 ½ and D Sa 2 ½ according to the standard) "GOST R ISO 8501-1-2014.
2 - etching according to GOST 9.402-2004;
3 - R-12, ORTOXYLOL, KAPILAR TU 20.30.12-018-81212828-2017 (* special attention to cold-rolled and chopped products);
4 - immediately 20-40 minutes before applying paintwork materials removal of moisture and ice "wet drying" with "KAPILAR" material or solvents R-5, R-12;
5 - decline surface tension forces for the best adhesion - KAPILAR TU 20.30.12-018-81212828-2017.

The application method must be strictly observed:

SEVERON is used for demanding work, prevents corrosion for a long time, can be applied directly to metal. Does not require preliminary priming. Increase the number of coats without priming. Do not apply a primer coat directly to metal using pneumatic spraying! To create an anti-corrosion layer directly on the metal, the method of airless spraying with high pressure washers is suitable, higher than 300 bar (list of recommended devices from 300 bar)

SEVERON is applied in 2-4 layers with a total coating thickness of 200 to 400 microns. For operation at temperatures of -60C °, a minimum of three coats must be applied.

For reliable use at temperatures of -60 °, do not add to Severon before application, the solvents intended for moderate zones!

In the event that the paint nevertheless peeled off the product, it is necessary to examine the layer that was directly close to the metal under a microscope. Due to the fact that solvent-borne acrylic copolymers reject oils and greases, it is necessary to COMPLETELY REMOVE the residues of rolling oil and cutting fluid from products made of cold-rolled and chopped material. Note that lubricants can be masked by slight corrosion. If we apply the ORTAMET mordant on such a surface, we will see how the corrosion has squeezed into phosphate, and the lubricant has been released in free form. FORBIDDEN! the use of white spirit, solvent, gasoline, even for degreasing and washing tools.

Previously, before the start of preparation for painting, the engineering and technical department or CDP must issue a technological map "Anti-corrosion protection of metal structures based on Severon AkCh-1711 enamel primer." technological map when performing work.

"ORTAMET" - phosphating composition for metal;
anticorrosive rust converter

Phosphating solution "ORTAMET" can be applied directly to rust even in frost (down to -15 ° C). Surface treatment with "ORTAMET" solution can be done by brush, roller or by spraying in a factory or production environment. The solution "ORTAMET" is applied to the surface, and the exposure is allowed in the air until the surface is completely dry. The ORTAMET solution converts rust on the metal surface into a durable black-brown coating, consisting mainly of iron phosphates, which creates a protective film on the surface. This protective film is a barrier to the emergence of new foci of corrosion and at the same time adhesive primer for further application of paintwork materials. Due to the ease of use and the use of non-toxic and non-toxic components, phosphating based on orthophosphoric acid is most widely used in industry. Treatment with ORTAMET solution can be carried out at low temperatures the environment(up to -15 ° C). Phosphating solution "ORTAMET" is supplied in 5 kg buckets.
Phosphating rust modifier for treating steel, zinc, cadmium, copper, aluminum and cast iron surfaces before painting. ORTAMET base - orthophosphoric acid, corrosion inhibitors, special additives.

Purpose: protection of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, metal surfaces and products from corrosion by converting rust into protective phosphate film, forming chemically bound layers of insoluble phosphate salts of iron, zinc and manganese.
Cold phosphating with ORTAMET provides high adhesive strength, anti-corrosive and weather-resistant, high adsorption paintwork... Significantly extends the life of the paintwork. Provides antifriction, electrical insulating and extrusion properties. Easy to apply, environmentally friendly. ORTAMET converts rust on metal surfaces into a durable silver-black to black-brown coating (composed mainly of secondary and tertiary iron phosphates).
ORTAMET rust converter is used both for primary painting and for dense rust layers.

Application area: metallurgy, mechanical engineering and shipbuilding, energy and oil and gas industry.

Mode of application: ORTAMET is applied on a dry surface, free from dirt. Degrease the surface if necessary. It should be painted after complete drying of the treated surface.

Waiting time before applying paintwork (drying / bluing): at a temperature of - 5 ° С for at least 30 minutes, at - 15 ° С - up to 10 hours. You can carry out drying even at more high temperature, for example 130 ° C (about 3 minutes). The application of the final paint and varnish coating should be carried out no later than 2 days after the drying of the rust converter. Application temperature range: from +5 ° С to +40 ° С.

Application method: brush, roller, spraying, dipping.

Consumption: 40-60 g / m2 - depending on the method of application and the shape of the surface.

Precautionary measures: during and after the completion of internal work, ventilate the room. Use personal protective equipment.

Typically, paint work is planned for the warm season, when temperature regime for this it is most favorable. The lower recommended temperature threshold for painting is plus 5 degrees. But now there are many modern paints and primers that are suitable even for negative temperatures. In this regard, the minimum possible limit at what temperature you can paint on the street has changed.

Features of painting in winter

In industrial conditions, the need for painting at low temperatures arises if you need to hand over the object on time, or if you urgently need to update the surface of the building. In everyday life, such urgency is rarely observed, and yet it happens. There are a number of features for painting in the cold season:

  1. The most unfavorable temperature for applying paints, enamels and primers in winter is from minus 5 degrees to plus 5 degrees. It is better to work even in frost, because it is in the specified range that condensation will form on any surface. In the presence of moisture, the adhesion of the coating deteriorates greatly, the properties of the paints change. The quality of the coating decreases, it will not last long.
  2. If you decide to paint facades in cold weather, you need to remember that facade paint of any brand dries 2-3 times longer than in warm weather. To get a high-quality coating, you need to use a thermal gun for drying or stretch the film over scaffolding.
  3. You should choose only enamel, primer suitable for the winter season. Using the wrong material will freeze it and ice will prevent it from being applied to walls. The final result of the work depends on the quality of the paint.

A number of modern paints are perfectly applied at zero temperature and in frost, some can be applied down to -20 degrees. There is good means resistant to temperature extremes. It is important that the temperature of the paint and varnish material itself during operation is positive. If the material is cold, it is placed in a container in a bucket of warm water.

The rules for using primer and paint in cold air mention compulsory training surface. You can not use coloring materials without certain actions:

  • clear working area from the old coating;
  • to process the surface with a sandblasting machine, sandpaper or in another convenient way;
  • close up irregularities with putty;
  • if the technology requires, carry out priming (it is necessary to prime the walls if it is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging with paint).

You cannot work if it is raining or snowing - you need to wait for the onset of normal weather. It is necessary to paint with a roller, a brush, and it is better to forget about the spray gun - its nozzle will quickly clog.

The most important thing is to keep the surface clean and dry. You should also bring the enamel to the desired viscosity. Usually, water-based paints are used, which are diluted with water. It must be remembered that alkyd materials dramatically increase their viscosity in the cold, and do not forget to dilute and heat them in time.

Priming works

In winter, use a primer that is resistant to low temperatures (frost-resistant soil). If iron is stained, special phosphating compounds are used. They can be applied over rust as they include special anti-corrosion components. The priming gives additional protection against corrosion and increases the adhesion of the final coating.

Painting the facades of the house

Carrying out exterior facade work in winter is possible with the choice of the right paint. After cleaning from dirt, dust, the walls are sanded, if there are areas of old paint or mold, they are removed. Next, the walls are primed with a product of the same brand with the main paint - this will increase the quality of the coating. They work with packages brought from the heat. As soon as the material begins to freeze, it is removed into the heat, and another packaging is taken out. The second coat of paint is usually applied after 3-5 days.

Painting bricks and plaster surfaces

The coloring of such surfaces does not differ from that of the facades of the house. It is only important not to do the painting immediately after the completion of the masonry - the work is postponed, the minimum period is a year. If you paint right away, the coating will peel off. Obligatory surface preparation (brushing from dirt, dust, mold). The chipped plaster is cleaned, the holes are closed, and allowed to dry well. You can also fill deep holes with frost-resistant silicone sealant. After priming, the wall is allowed to dry for 5-7 days, then painted with a roller or brush.

Concrete processing

Concrete floors and walls have a porous surface. Also outside concrete products erode faster and the coating dye loses its brightness. Painting of concrete can be done a year after installation, it is necessary that some of the concrete dust escapes. In some cases, it is possible to paint surfaces without aging - for example, in a workshop, in a warehouse, in a hangar.

Metal processing

In winter, it may be necessary to paint pipes, garage walls, iron sheathing of sheds, fences made of profiled sheet, etc. The metal does not absorb moisture, therefore it does not change its properties depending on the climate. For painting work, special compositions for metal should be used - at subzero temperatures, they form a strong elastic film.

Tips for painting metal in winter:

  • the surface must be dry, clean, free from rust using abrasive devices;
  • if there is frost, the surface is treated with a flash of a gas burner - a brush or scraper will be ineffective;
  • preliminary degreasing is carried out with isopropanol, acetone.

Wood painting

It is not recommended to paint wood, products from fiberboard, chipboard, lining in winter. If the house is wooden outside, it is better to leave its staining until the warm season. Water accumulates between the fibers of the tree, which freezes in frost. The structure of the material expands, and the paint applied on top seals it in this state along with ice. After thawing, the water begins to push out the paint, the latter does not withstand and goes in bubbles. Rotting wood also begins under the enamel.

If staining is urgently needed, a test is done first. Stick the tape on the surface with a wide strip, leave for 2 days, then remove. If there is condensation on the tape, do not paint. With a dry strip, staining can be done after preliminary priming.

Indoor painting

Painting a house inside in cold weather is much easier than doing outdoor work. But the specifics of painting must be taken into account.

Balcony

Painting a balcony or loggia in an apartment in winter may be required when selling to refine the surface of walls, ceilings, floors. The hardest thing to tint cold balcony- it is better to wait for the above-zero temperature and only then carry out Painting works... At urgent need you can buy paint that will withstand low temperatures, wait sunny day, make sure that the walls of the loggia are sufficiently heated, paint.

Coloring is carried out only in the morning - the coating will dry faster due to warming up by the sun's rays. On the insulated balcony, if there is an outlet, you can take out the heater, this will allow you to carry out the work efficiently. Acrylic water-based compositions are well suited for balconies - with their use, poisoning can be avoided, they are environmentally friendly, odorless. Such paints increase thermal insulation characteristics walls, allow them to "breathe", very slowly fade and collapse. If there are plastic or metal parts on the balcony, it is better to varnish them. The lining is covered with acrylic varnish.

Batteries

Battery painting in winter has a number of features. To paint the radiator, you need to prepare a brush with metal bristles, brushes - a simple one and a radiator with a long handle. You will also need sandpaper, brush for cleaning from dust, knife. Be sure to purchase a primer for metal, paint, solvent. The basic composition must be suitable for radiators and contain anti-corrosion additives, be non-toxic. The best remedies are:

  • acrylic;
  • alkyd;
  • water-dispersive;
  • silicone;
  • based on heat-resistant varnish;
  • zinc.

How many degrees can such enamels withstand? They are designed for a standard temperature of +80 degrees. Some are available in aerosol form - sold in a spray can, and even the most hard-to-reach places... It is better to remove the batteries for painting by shutting off the water supply. If this is not possible, you should wait until the batteries are disconnected in the spring. Hot batteries will be painted poorly, the coating will often swell. After cleaning the surface, it is primed, successive painting is done in 2 layers. Each layer should dry completely.

Window

Dyeing wooden windows in frost outside it is undesirable, like other wood products. Only the use of heat guns will make it possible to dry the product well, but the labor intensity of the work will increase significantly. From the inside, painting is carried out in the same way as it is done in warm weather. Remove old paint, prime the surface, then apply suitable composition. Plastic windows you can also paint with special paints if you want to refresh their color.

What paints are used in winter

Enamels and primers that are used at low temperatures are diverse. Their properties:

  • do not freeze in the cold;
  • fit for different types materials;
  • can be operated at temperatures up to –10… –20 degrees;
  • form an elastic layer;
  • dry faster than conventional paint.

Water based paints

This type of paint is most in demand in the winter. The products of Dufa and Batilith, Dulux and Tikkurila, which produce many types of corresponding paints and varnishes, are very popular. Good frost-resistant paints are produced by the German company Caparol. A number of manufacturers produce water-based frost-resistant paint AK-115, which can withstand up to -20 degrees of frost. Other known materials:

  • Parade f20;
  • Lacra;
  • Alpa Façade;
  • Brite Professional primer;
  • Vincent Muralith F1.

Oil paints

Oil materials are now almost never used. According to their properties, they are much inferior to water-based paints, their service life is not higher than 2-3 years. You need to dilute the funds with linseed oil, special solvents. Only some paints marked PF, MA, GF are suitable for work in the cold.

Aerosol paints

Enamels in cylinders are used, for the most part, for painting batteries, cars, plastic products. They are quite expensive, but they provide quality coverage. Popular brands are:

  • Maxi color;
  • Colomix;
  • Dupli-color;
  • Vixen.

Most of this type of paint can be used down to –15 degrees.

Storage temperature of paints and varnishes

Usually admissible temperature storage is indicated on the packaging material. According to GOST, paints and varnishes can be stored at a temperature of -40 ... + 40 degrees, but individual conditions may exist for each specific material.
