Why does it seem to us that the older we get, the faster time flies. Why time flies so fast

Scientists have figured out why time is accelerating

In recent years, leading scientists on our planet have begun to notice that time is accelerating. Yes, and we hear more and more often: "It seems that I will never have enough time to cope with all matters" or: "Where does the time go?" Indeed, the years are flying faster than ever, and there is a scientific explanation for this.

We are changing rapidly, becoming more aware and more often than ever, turning to spiritual and personal development. Why it happens?

Pulse of the Earth or why time is accelerating

Scientists discovered many years ago that the Earth has a pulse. This pulse, or beat, similar to a heartbeat, has been steady at approximately 7.8 beats per second for thousands of years. However, since around 1980, the Earth's heartbeat began to accelerate. It is currently 12 beats per second, but the most incredible thing is that some scientists believe that the Earth will actually stop rotating when this pulse reaches 13 beats per second. It is believed that the rotation will stop for about three days, and then the Earth will begin to rotate in the opposite direction. This will cause an inversion of the magnetic poles, but what happens after it is unclear ...

It is because of this increase in pulse rate that we feel that time is accelerating, as it were. Why do we “feel” that time seems to be passing faster than before? The point is that the period that was previously perceived as 24 hours now feels like only 16 hours. Our chronometers still measure seconds, minutes and hours. And still, a new day is celebrated every 24 hours, but due to the accelerated heartbeat of the Earth, we perceive their duration as 2/3 of the normal, or as 16 ordinary hours.

It is thanks to the compression of time that so many people (perhaps without even realizing the real reason) turn on the path to spiritual development, moving away from materialism. Feel the need to change their life, begin to do the right things for the soul. There is a great desire to share good, help others and thank the Creator for this.

Conversation between the studio guest - Igor Mikhailovich Danilov, academician, professor, author of the method of vertebrorevitology - with the host of the program Olga Gorbanyova:

THEM.: - ... Over the past 12 years, the actual time has decreased by at least 20 percent. I'm not saying that the stars began to fly faster or the second hand accelerated ... No, the second hand went on and on. Right? And the day is followed by the night with the same interval. But almost everyone, even children who were recently born, feel how time is shortening. If earlier a day passed like a day, now a week has already passed like one day. And what will happen next? So isn't this a reason to think about it ?!

O. G .: -Maybe yes.

THEM.: - This is also the answer to another question for those who ask themselves. My opinion is this: people need to change - you should not swear, you should not rely on the One who will come, especially since people do not see this, they do not feel it. Therefore, there is no need to wait for someone to come and do everything for them. We need to act ourselves. Stretch out our hands to each other ourselves, we must unite.

But if people are believers, they have nothing to share, because God is one for everyone. And it makes no difference what languages people speak here in this world. There they will speak the same language. And it is true. In this we can always find reconciliation.

O. G .: Undoubtedly!

Why time begins to flow faster with age

The endless summer of childhood ends, time begins to move faster and faster. Sooner or later, everyone is faced with this sad fact.

There are various theories as to why this is happening. The most logical is that in childhood and adolescence, we constantly do something for the first time. First kiss, first night out, first love, first day at school or university, first car ... Each such first event fascinates and makes us remember the smallest details. And the more we remember it, the more intense it seems.

When we go through similar experiences over and over again, that novelty is gone. Therefore, time is accelerating.

We experience a similar state in. The first few days do not fly by as quickly as the next. This is due to the fact that in the second part of the trip the surroundings become more and more familiar.

Neuroscientist David Eagleman, who studies time perception, calls it an elastic thing that changes depending on how closely we interact with our experience. The stronger this connection, the slower time moves.

Time slows down if we are careful. Because we're just starting to notice more.

This is especially true during emergencies or some kind of traumatic event, since in this case we are more inclined to focus on the details. If you've ever had a car accident, then you probably remember the feeling that an ambulance has been traveling for ages.

How to slow down time

If time depends on our perception, then we are able to slow it down.

A good way is to train mindfulness.

This can be done while eating, savoring each bite of food slowly and for a long time. This is called mindful eating.

Another way is to be in nature, watching water or trees and listening to birds singing.

Here are some topics you can use for this exercise:

  • Write about special moments from the past year.
  • Write about all the moments of birth or death that affected you.
  • Write about achievements that you are proud of.
  • Write a letter of gratitude to someone who has done something good for you.
  • Write about a new passion.
  • Write about any positive transformations in your life.

Other ways to develop mindfulness are described in these articles.

Perhaps each of us noticed that the time that dragged on slowly in childhood is constantly accelerating as we grow up. And if at 5 years old the year seemed like an eternity, then at 30 it flies by almost imperceptibly. What is the reason for this and is there a way to slow down time? We tried to figure it out and, it seems, found possible reasons for this phenomenon.

site invites you to find out why each new year passes faster and faster and what to do if you want to "slow down" your life a little.

Lack of new experience

As a child, every day brings us a lot of new impressions, we learn and constantly see something for the first time. With age, such moments become less and less, so we begin to measure the course of events biasedly. This point of view was confirmed by neuroscientist David Eagleman, who conducted experiments by showing people different images.

The subjects had already seen some of these pictures before, and the rest were completely new to them. It turned out that, according to their subjective feelings, people spent more time looking at new images than viewing those already seen before, although absolutely all the pictures were shown to them with equal duration.

It follows from this that for a person whose brain is busy processing new information, time flows subjectively more slowly. And this explains why childhood seems to us stretched, and adulthood seems fleeting. For example, some people think that 1970 was 30 years ago, but in fact, 48 years have passed.

Chunk theory

This theory is also related to impressions, namely how our brains interpret them depending on age. American cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter believes that the human brain tends to collect individual impressions into chunks. For example, everyday chores like cleaning, cooking, and shopping are bundled together into a chunk called "chores."

Imagine that a mother goes out for a walk with her baby. For a child, this event is full of new impressions: he met other children, saw an interesting butterfly or beetle, learned how to make sand cakes, etc. But for his mother this is the most common event, not the first and far from the last in her life.

It turns out that throughout life our brain “packs” impressions into rather broad categories: family, work, entertainment, hobbies, sports, etc. Probably, “chunking” helps the brain optimize memory, but as a result, past events seem fleeting to us.

Neurophysiological processes

No structure has been found in the human brain that is responsible for time. But as a person grows up, the level of dopamine, a neurotransmitter, which (in addition to causing feelings of satisfaction) plays an important role in ensuring cognitive activity, decreases. As a result, the ability to perceive time changes in adults and the elderly.

This is supported by the results of an experiment by a psychologist at the University of Virginia College in Wise, Peter Mangan (Peter Mangan). The scientist compared the ability to assess the time interval of 3 minutes in two groups of people: young (19-24 years old) and elderly (60-80 years old). The subjects were asked to mentally note the time of 3 minutes and say when, in their opinion, these 3 minutes had elapsed.

In the group of young people, the time was assessed more accurately: for them, 3 minutes passed in 3 minutes and 3 seconds, and according to the elderly, 3 minutes passed in 3 minutes and 40 seconds of actual time. Thus, we can conclude that the elderly do indeed perceive time intervals as shorter than they really are.

M. Keener scale

Austrian BMW design consultant Maximilian Kiener has developed a timeline according to which the longer you live, the shorter the year seems to you. For example, at the age of 5 years, a year is 1/5 of your life, which is quite significant, and at the age of 50 - only 1/50, and therefore does not seem to be such a large value anymore.

According to this theory, at 76 years old, 1 year of life is perceived in length as a vacation after the 1st year at the university, and if you live to be 100 years old, it will seem to you that half of your life ended at about 18 years of age, despite that it is contrary to objective reality.

Is it possible to slow down time?

As you may have understood from the previous paragraphs, one of the main factors that "speed up" time is the lack of new experiences. Of course, not everyone can afford frequent travel or expensive entertainment, but you can always find time for self-education, walking in places where you usually do not go, meeting new people and much more.

An important tip: do not put off important things "for later". Procrastination can lead to the fact that, looking back, you feel like you were wasting your precious time, and life went by so quickly, as if you were not living at all.

Therefore, you should not be afraid of positive changes, for example, changing jobs if you have dreamed about this for a long time, but did not dare to leave your comfort zone. By mastering a new activity that you like, you will not only become happier, but also slow down your personal hours.

For the summer, we, as usual, went to the village, to my grandmother. They lived in a small house built of clay and wood, almost completely devoid of everything that is called civilization. Evenings whiled away by the light of a kerosene lamp, listening to fairy tales. How rich the world seemed then, full of secrets and beauty! It was as if I lived in some other time, was part of another story, open to eternity. Now the time is running out.

Time flies faster, much faster than before. Have you noticed this? We don't have time to read a book, think about our own, meet close friends, we don't even have time to be with our children and our companion through the crossroads of this life.

Scientists have even begun to measure the reduction in time. Even though it is not easy to measure what is the measure of all that exists. For there is no such state or movement in which time would not be present as a nagging feeling of passing. And they came to the conclusion, no one knows by what calculations, that today 24 hours pass as quickly as only 16 earlier passed. That is, we have already lost a third of the time of our life or half of the time during which we are in an active state. But not only scientists point to this - the fathers who ascend in the deserts of the Holy Mountain, hermits of our days, say the same thing: time today flows much faster than before, and it’s hard to blame them for the psychological subjectivity caused by social changes ...

The speed of all processes has increased, but, nevertheless, the time has decreased - the opposite of what one would expect is happening! So, contrary to all scientific logic, the ideologists of the theory of progress turned out to be big liars. Did they not inspire us in the last century that scientific and technological progress will lead to the fact that machines will replace human labor and therefore there will be more time? Yes, the washing machine makes it easier for a woman today, but now she suffers much more from stress due to lack of time than when she rinsed clothes in the river ...

In the old days, people moved slowly, acting decorously in everything they happened to do during the day, during all the days of their lives. They began the day with morning prayer and ended with evening prayer; at the table they read Our Father and did not approach anything without overshadowing themselves with the sign of the holy cross. That is, a person at any time and in every place found a free moment to say a word to God and, as an answer, to receive confidence in his soul that he was not alone. His life, although it was difficult, with ups and downs (which in general should be the life of everyone in order to be able to learn something in it), but it gave him a sense of completeness. It was an existence experienced in its entirety.

Now everything is done on the run, so that we almost all the time feel deprived of the joy of the moment, imperfect in what we do and experience. And when you perform your prayer (whoever has the zeal for this), your mind is not there. He rushes forward, he stares into the care of the present day or everyday life in general. And when you start to do something, it doesn't even occur to you that you need to cross yourself, because you are already thinking about something else - but in the end, it does not fit into the surrounding environment. As if God should follow the world, imitate it, and not vice versa ...

And this is how the person is left alone. Not only because God is no longer with him - he does not perceive other people, friends, brothers, spouse or spouse close. This is because in running everyone has their own rhythm - in other words, in a hurry, you always look ahead, at what will happen next, in the hope that the time will come when you will calm down. But life passes quickly and illness sets in, death also comes, faster than you expect, comes before this much-desired respite, not allowing you to calm down and return to yourself, home.

But you can even understand this loneliness: the haste, the crazy rhythm and the inescapable noise of the world in which we live, do not allow us to hear the timid steps of another on the paths of our soul. Running somehow pushes us outside the boundaries of our own soul. After all, the soul, just like a child and love, needs you to devote time to it. It has its own rhythm - the rhythm of deep and calm communication with God and other souls. The woman understands this better, because she feels it more sharply.

And since the rhythm of the alternation of days and years of the society in which we live alienates us for a long time from the life of our own soul, we reach the point where we get used to this state and more and more we feel as if it does not exist at all. Therefore, evolutionist theories take root in our country. In other words, we forget where we came from, we forget the native language of innocent love, the language of that landscape of the soul, which contained so many beauties and secrets. And often we die among strangers, unknown to anyone, as happens with a huge multitude of Christians who are lost among those deprived of the right faith, like the Jewish people, who slaved the Egyptians for a piece of meat. So God allowed - maybe a person, looking at the material as a symbol, will understand what is happening at the level of the spirit.

The architects of the everyday landscape of modern society, the biotechnologists of humanity, subordinate to the machine, imagined that a person, like a detail, can be processed to such an extent that it reaches the state of a robot. A programmable computer that will promptly respond to system commands. And they embarked on this project, almost bringing the Western individual to the specified requirements. But still, they did not manage to change the nature of man completely. Alienated from their own soul in the world of machines and information, people suffer without understanding why. Most of them do not even know that they have a soul. How, then, can they recognize her and understand her suffering? They are like a patient who has something in pain, who feels great weakness, dizziness and complete fatigue, but cannot tell the doctor where his ailment comes from.

The suffering that most people experience, and which makes many throw themselves into the maelstrom of all sorts of sins, is closely related to the painful expiration of time, which no longer has enough patience for us. Not enough because time no longer measures life with God - the source of time and life. This is a painful time that gives us a yardstick of alienation, exhaustion from running in vain. And the more we run, the more alone we feel. This is where a vicious circle begins. For the more alone we feel, the harder it is for us to endure the painful passage of time, which no longer finds its meaning and joy. So we rush to run with increasing haste; We hide, as if in the sand, in work, in all kinds of duties and chores, and in a few minutes of rest, when we are left alone with ourselves, it becomes even harder for us, and we start all over again. That is why the television was invented - to satisfy this inescapable loneliness experienced by today's people, who despised God to the point of complete oblivion and ignorance. TV, newspapers, the Internet, sensations, eroticism and violence, keen feelings, overflowing emotions - all this in order to make us forget that our life has become excessively short and painful. We live as if we do not live our own life.

Please stop for a moment in this race of emptiness. We need to find our wasted time, return it again. How? Attending Holy Liturgy as often as possible. The life time of our soul will be drunk, like everything created in this world, from the grace of God, in this case - from the time of the Kingdom. Try it and you will see how your life will change.

Please, gain your time by patiently standing in confession. After all, sin is the main culprit in shortening the time of our life. God does not give us more time so that we do not deepen the sins in which we are.

Acquire time by stopping as often as possible during the day to say: Lord, have mercy!

Gain time by throwing away the TV, without being afraid of what your neighbors, friends and family will say! TV is the largest chronophagus (time devourer: from ancient Greek χρόνος - time and φᾰγω - I devour. - Ed.) in the entire history of the world. He eats an average of 3.7 hours a day from a person. For old people and children - more, for adolescents - less. Do you think that it is impossible to throw it away? But isn't it easier to give up TV than to suffer because of the loss of such a precious time in our life, moments that leave and do not return, a time in which you are still healthy, while you are still alive? Have you ever seen a happy person watching TV? Or have we forgotten and do not want to know at all what happiness means? Then we deserved our fate ...

We need to find time again, becoming as before sensitive to the misfortune and pain of friends, relatives, neighbors and people from the street - and most of all sensitive to the voice of our own heart, so mournful, so dowager, as if we had died in the land of strangers, buried among the worries and the damned pleasures of vegetation devoid of God.

I ask you, do not ignore these words - after all, we do not know how many more of us God will tolerate.

As a person gets older, he notices that time passes faster than before. Sometimes we recall the past and note with surprise that 15, 20, 30 years have passed since some event, although it seems that it just happened.

If in childhood time drags on for a long time, then gradually it all accelerates and accelerates. It seems that the summer has just begun, and the end of winter and a new summer are ahead.

While people are busy with business, they do not feel this movement. However, one day they stop and realize that youth has already passed, and then they also suddenly realize that old age is already on the doorstep. But how can this be? Just now, after all, we were young and suddenly everything.

When our life is just beginning, then we have to go through many stages: kindergarten, school, army, institute. And all this drags on for so long, you are still waiting for something, when finally real life begins. And now bang! Started! And there is space ahead, in which there is nothing to slow you down, only forward, only with acceleration.

Our life is like a rocket, it's hard to lift it into the air, but how it gets out of the atmosphere ... Hey, tell someone how to stop this thing ?! And there was no one smart left around, mom and dad were left somewhere behind. And they do not know the answer to this question, they themselves are flying somewhere. So we move forward with acceleration until the fuel runs out.

Why is time passing faster than before?

The point is in the structure of our memory. After all, our memory is not a film in which everything is laid out in chronological order. If, in order to remember something, we had to rewind memory for a long, long time, then we would feel the scale of time.

Our memory is a data bank, all memories are equally accessible. Here's your fifth birthday and wedding right next to you. Your first day at work and getting fired 10 years later. There is no measure by which memory can be measured.

By the way, our memory is also a very volatile thing. According to psychological research, if we remember something, then it is not at all a fact that it was.

It seems to me that when people indulge in memories, they are surprised not at how much time has passed, but at the fact that something happened at all. It happens that you remember such a hoary antiquity that you are surprised that such a thing is even possible. But at the same time, it may seem that an even earlier memory was, as it is now.

This is because time does not exist for our consciousness. After all, what is time? This is just a statement that we cannot go back. And in memories we can. And this discrepancy creates a feeling of nostalgia and fear that time flies too fast. It's like in childhood, when you go too far from home. You want to go home, but you can't. The wind of time takes you further and further.

What can you do about it?

Maybe not so bad, huh? Is it carrying us somewhere? So what? When you ask yourself these questions, you understand that it’s scary not because time has taken you away from somewhere, but because you don’t know where it will bring you. You know more precisely, but somehow you do not like this destination. Here we run into. It seems that someone is robbing us. Not only is the film about our life not endless, but also as if someone was wasting it with acceleration.

Time cannot be slowed down, but something else can be done. To understand that time does not matter at all, just as the kilometers traveled do not matter. Only we matter, here and now. The path does not matter, only the traveler matters.

Time and memories are just illusions. When a person does not pay attention to them, he is happy, because he can enjoy the present. So, if you do not notice how time passes, it is very good, it means that you are happy that you are living in the present.

When a person lives in the past or future, then time slows down, but at the same time, the person feels bad. So don't worry too much that time is passing faster than before. It's not about time.
