The custom of reading the Psalter for the Dead dates back to ancient times. Our psalter is read at the grave of the departed laity. It also brings them great benefit, for it is accepted by the Lord as a pleasant propitious sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those remembered: just as He generally accepts every prayer, every good deed. Therefore, the custom, existing in many places, of asking clergymen, in a monastery, or persons specially engaged in this, deserves any encouragement - to read a psalter in memory of the dead, and this request is combined with the giving of alms for those who are remembered. But much more excellent is the reading of the Psalter by those who remember it. Then the benefits are multiplying. For those who are remembered, this will be even more comforting, for it testifies to a greater degree of love and zeal for them by their living brothers, who themselves PERSONALLY want work hard in memory of them, and not replace themselves in work with others. The Lord's podvig of reading will be not only as a sacrifice for those who are remembered, but also as a sacrifice for those who bring it, toiling in reading. And, finally, those who read the Psalter themselves will receive from the word of God both great consolation and great edification, which they are deprived of, entrusting this good deed to others and themselves most often not even being present at it. And alms can and should be given independently, regardless of the reading of the psalter, and its value in this latter case will, of course, be higher, for it will not be combined with the imposition of obligatory labor on the recipient, but will be given according to the commandment of the Savior. tune and therefore it will be received by the Lord as compounded charity. In our liturgical books there are no specific instructions on the order of reading the Psalter for the departed. In the follow-up psalter, psalms are printed all in a row with subdivision into kathismas and glories without any additions. This is for their liturgical use. After all the psalms, there are special troparia and prayers for each kathisma. This is for private reading. In specially published psalteries, these troparia and prayers are placed side by side after each kathisma. If the reading of the Psalter about the living and the dead, or about both, is combined with the usual daily private reading of the Psalter, then according to the first and second glories, prayers for the living and the dead or for the last ones can be added to each kathisma, and for each kathisma the usual troparia and prayers. If the reading of the Psalter is performed only for the sake of commemoration, especially at the tomb of the deceased, then there is no need to read the troparia and prayers assigned for the usual cell rule by kathisma. It will be more appropriate in all cases and after each glory and after the kathisma to read a special memorial prayer. There is no uniformity regarding the formula of remembrance when reading the psalter. Different prayers are used in different places, sometimes randomly composed. The practice of ancient Russia consecrated the use in this case of that funeral troparion, with which the cell reading of the funeral canons should end: Remember, O Lord, the soul of your deceased servant, moreover, during the reading, five bows are required, and the troparion itself is read three times. How to Read Prayers for a Newly Reposed Home and Temple

“That did not come into the heart of man that God had prepared for those who loved Him,” the Apostle Paul writes to the Christians of the city of Corinth. This means that a person does not have enough imagination to imagine what another world looks like, where he will appear before God face to face. But when a relative or friend dies, one wants to know what happens to him beyond the realm of being. When and how to pray to God in order to ease your grief about the past and the path of his soul to eternity? Church and home prayers for the newly departed, with careful reading, give the Christian consolation and instruction.

The newly departed (i.e., who have just appeared before God) is called deceased from the time of death to a year... Over the centuries, several customs have been established in the Orthodox Church to commemorate the newly departed:

  • daily reading of the Psalter with a special prayer;
  • magpie, performed in the temple;
  • memorial services on the 3rd, 9th and 40th day;
  • litia at the grave on days of general commemoration of the dead;
  • donations, memorial meals.

Godly Christians try to do the above and after a year. Thus, the fate of the deceased is facilitated and the Lord's commandment about love for neighbors is fulfilled.

Reading the Psalter for the newly reposed

When the body of the deceased is still in the house and the arrival of the priest for the funeral is expected, the relatives take turns, including at night, read the Psalter over the deceased... In the absence of the proper skill, a church reader or a pious layman who has experience in this is invited.

For reading, they set up a lectern (stand for a book) or a small table, placing it in the heads of the deceased, light a candle. It is not forbidden to use a table lamp along with a candle. With prolonged reading and extreme fatigue, the reader can continue to pray while sitting, getting up only to bow to the words "Glory: and now: Hallelujah" and prayers performed after each kathisma.

Friends and relatives can quietly enter and leave during the performance of the Psalter, praying for a deceased relative within their powers. The guest reader may, if possible, read all night, or limit yourself to reading the Book of Psalms once... For the work he has suffered, he is offered a monetary donation, a part of the memorial meal and asked for prayers for the deceased.

The sounding of the psalms at the tomb of the newly departed calms the grief of those close to him and gives hope for the mercy of God, with whom the soul of the deceased will very soon meet.

On the day of the burial, believing relatives and friends of the deceased agree among themselves to continue reading the Psalter until the fortieth day. Everyone undertakes to read one kathisma every day.

Prayer for the newly reposed

The Psalter consists of 20 Kathismas, each of them is divided into three parts. After each part, three bows are made and a short prayer is read:

"Rest, O Lord, the soul of Thy servant (name), forgive him his voluntary and involuntary sins, and grant him the Kingdom of Heaven".

At the end of the kathisma, a prayer is read for the deceased for up to 40 days, located at the end of the Psalter, in the chapter "On reading the Psalter about the deceased." If there is no such chapter in the book, use a separately printed text.

To read deliberately, you need to understand the meaning of some words and expressions composing the text.

  • "In the hope of an eternal belly"- hoping for eternal life;
  • "Forgive sins and consume unrighteousness"- these words refer to the Lord, Who forgives sins and destroys unrighteous deeds created by man;
  • "Voluntary and involuntary sins"- sins committed intentionally and unintentionally;
  • "The sacrament of the eternal good"- to receive a part of eternal blessings;
  • "Amen"- everything said is true.

Prayer for the 3rd, 9th and 40th day

Commemoration on special days after death existed in paganism. Wishing to sanctify folk customs, the Church decreed to pray for the soul of the deceased within the time frame established by antiquity. It is impossible for the human mind to know what is happening in a world where there is no time. To make it easier to imagine the afterlife of the deceased, The Church divides it into periods:

3rd day, burial

On the third day after death, the Burial (funeral service) is performed- an Orthodox ceremony with the participation of a priest and the obligatory prayer of loved ones. The burial is performed over the coffin of the deceased. In the event of a tragic death, when the body cannot be found, an absentee funeral service is performed in the temple.

The burial rite is very long and in ancient times it lasted about two hours. Today it is performed in abbreviated form, up to 20 minutes. This will not affect the fate of the deceased if relatives pray fervently for his soul.

After the ceremony, a memorial meal is arranged, to which in the old days the poor and the poor were invited, asking their prayers for the deceased.

9th day, the beginning of the ordeal or "twenty courts"

On this important day, loved ones gather in the temple, to serve the requiem... The soul of the deceased, having enjoyed the contemplation of the heavenly abodes, prepares to give an answer for all the wrongs he has done. Demons approach her, recalling even the smallest offenses related to twenty types of sins. Angels answer them, pointing out the good deeds of the deceased or the church repentance brought to them. It is hard for the soul, for which the Angels cannot give an answer. Then the prayers of loved ones are put on the scales, performed on the 9th day and all subsequent times, until the 40th day.

40th day, determining the location of the soul

On the 40th day, a memorial meal is gathered again, a memorial service is ordered in the temple. You can prolong the ended magpie or order the reading of the "Unsleeping Psalter" in the monastery. The loved ones of the deceased pray that God would have mercy on the soul and determine it to await the Last Judgment in heavenly bliss.

It is better to call as many people as possible to prayer, giving alms on behalf of the deceased. Usually they distribute food, money or clothing to the poor, saying: "Remember the repose of the servant of God (name)." The one who takes alms is baptized and answers with the prayer: "Remember, Lord, Thy servant in Thy kingdom."

After 40 days, the reading of the Psalter on the deceased stops., but his name is constantly mentioned when reading kathismas at home or listening to them in the temple. It is enough to mentally say on "Glory" "Remember, Lord, Thy servant."

In some cases, by agreement with the priest, a funeral liturgy can be performed in the church.

Parental Saturdays

Before the year from the day of death is completed, the deceased is called the newly departed. There is also a custom to do this only until the 40th day. Both traditions are valid.

Memorial Litias are performed in the church every Saturday. to which you should submit a note and a candle. On the days of common church remembrance - Parents' Saturdays - food is brought for the ministers of the temple, so that they join in the prayer. It is good to put a note with the name of the deceased in the bag with the offering, be sure to mark "for peace."

On the completion of the year from the date of death, a capital monument (cross) is erected over the grave and a requiem is served. After that, the deceased is called "remembered" (which is remembered forever).

Home prayer for the newly reposed

Almost all the texts sounded in the church at the funeral service and requiem can be used in home prayer for the deceased. You can find them in the prayer book or the Book... Usually, the remembrance of the newly departed is performed after the morning rule, where a separate text is devoted to this.

Prayer for the newly departed calms the bitterness of separation, allows you to spiritually connect with him, help his position. For a longer prayer, there is a "Canon for the Lonely Dead", where, for convenience, the commemoration is conducted in the singular. An akathist with the same name can be attached to the canon. These texts are in liturgical books, so for reading at home it is more convenient to buy a separate edition in the church or print it from the Internet. Order of reading the Psalms for the departed

In the Orthodox Church, there is a good custom of continuous reading of the Psalter over the body of the deceased (except for the time when funeral services or funeral litias are performed at the tomb) before his burial and in memory after his burial.

The reading of the Psalter for the dead has its origins in the most distant antiquity. Serving as a prayer to the Lord for the dead, it brings them great consolation both in itself, as reading the word of God, and as testifying to the love of their living brothers for them.

The reading of the Psalter begins at the end of "Following the Exodus of the Soul." Psalms should be read with affection and contrition of the heart, without haste, with attention delving into what is being read. The greatest benefit is the reading of the Psalter by the relatives of the deceased: it testifies to a great degree of love and zeal for those who are remembered by their neighbors.
