In detail: the rules for reading the Psalter for the deceased at home - from all open sources and different parts of the world on the site site for our dear readers.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

To the Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfill everything, Treasure of the good and life to the Giver, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save our souls, Beloved.

Trisagion

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

Lord have mercy.(three times)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us, every bewildered answer, this Ti prayer as if to the Lord of sin we bring: have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit: Honest of Thy prophet, O Lord, triumph, Heaven, the Church of the show, Angels rejoice with men. By prayers, Christ God, rule our belly in the world, let us sing Ti: Alleluia.

And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen: Many of my multitudes, the Mother of God, of sins, I come to You, Pure, demanding salvation: visit my weak soul and pray to Thy Son and our God forgiveness, even for cruel deeds, Blessed One.

Lord have mercy, 40 times. And bow down, powerfully.

The same prayer to the Holy Life-Giving Trinity: All-Holy Trinity, God and the Companion of the whole world, hurry and direct my heart, begin with reason and finish good deeds of these God-inspired books, even the Holy Spirit of David's mouth I will regurgitate, and now I want to speak my words, unworthy ignorance, falling, I pray to Ti, and ask for help from You: Lord, control my mind and strengthen my heart, not about the words of the mouth of coldness, but have fun about the mind of the spoken words, and get ready to do good deeds, I’m learning, and I say: yes I have been enlightened by good deeds, I will be a partaker with all Your chosen ones at the judgment of the hands of the country. And now, Vladyka, bless, yes, sighing from my heart, and with my tongue I will sing, saying to the sit: Come, let us worship our Tsar God. Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ, our King our God. Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ Himself, the Tsar and our God.

Just wait a little, until all feelings subside. Then create a beginning not soon, without laziness, with tenderness and a broken heart. Rtsy quietly and reasonably, with attention, and not struggling, as well as with the mind to understand the verb.

Orthodox commemoration of the departed

Today, to commemorate the dead, it is customary to read the Psalter - a collection of Old Testament psalms (there are 150 of them). They start reading on the very first day (or better, immediately after the fact of death is stated). You can pray in person - that is, directly at the tomb of the deceased - or in absentia, for example, in a church or at home. They usually read up to 40 days, at the fortieth they stop. In the future, often practice reading 40 days before and after death, a total of 80 days. You can read both aloud and silently.

In the video, you will learn how prayers help the departed.

This book, which has long since passed into the category of liturgical, since almost half of the texts of services in churches consist either of its texts, or of imitating them, is allowed to be read while sitting. This is the so-called "sciatic" book. You can also read while standing. But not lying down. The Holy Fathers, who by their relationship to the Heavenly Father acquired the Holy Spirit (that is, checked their inner state with God), teach that God does not hear those prayers in which the body does not bother and the heart does not grieve.

In general, the Psalter is a collection of psalms. The psalm, in turn, is a semi-prayerful, semi-poetic text that literally expresses all possible states of a person who has already begun his relationship with the Heavenly Father. There are several authors whose works have been imprinted in it for centuries. But the main content belongs to the Old Testament king named David, who is best known to us from the battle with Goliath.

However, for God himself, this man was dear for other merits - for his meekness and gentleness, his ability to forgive, not to take revenge on his enemies. After all, these qualities that we inherit from God were extremely rare in the cruel times of David. Therefore, the state of mind of this saint before God as a husband is expressed in psalms and tunes the reader to an appropriate, peaceful way. And the soul, full of states and moods in tune with God, is very pleasing to Heavenly Father, He hears it and answers its requests and needs. Through this, the deceased is of great benefit.

In this video, you will learn how to pray for the departed correctly.

The Psalter is divided for ease of reading into 20 chapters, each of which is called "kathisma", which, in turn, includes 3-4 psalms. There is a pious tradition in the first three days before the burial of the deceased, 1 day in any of the indicated ones, to read the entire book at the tomb of the deceased. In part, N. V. Gogol tried to tell about this in his story "Viy"... Homa Brutus fulfills precisely this church obedience: it is the Psalter that reads at the tomb of the deceased.

Psalter reading scheme

Vladyka Afanasy (Sakharov) devoted many works to help in the study of the question of how it is appropriate to pray according to this divinely inspired book at the grave of the deceased. He notes in his research that in order for everything to go right, efficiently and without unnecessary difficulties, it is necessary to adhere to certain rules. He says that during the memorial reading there is no need to read the prayers that are placed after each kathisma.

They are intended for a simple private rule (that is, when a person simply for the sake of prayer to God includes in his daily prayer rule one or more kathisma from the Psalter). During the memorial prayer, the Vladyka writes, it will be more “appropriate” after each “Glory” (Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit) and after the end of the kathisma to say a special memorial prayer. It begins with the words "Remember, O Lord our God, in faith and hope ..."... And also during the reading, the Vladyka notes, it befits to put five bows to the ground, and the troparion itself is read three times.

In accordance with the same ancient practice, the memorial reading of the Psalter is preceded by the reading of the Canon for the person introducing himself, at the end of which the psalms will begin. When the whole book has been read, the funeral Canon is again relied upon. Upon completion, you can again proceed to the divinely inspired book. And so in a circle throughout the reading of the Psalter for the repose.

How to remember the dead.

Order of reading the psalms

There is an established order of reading the Psalter about the deceased. This church liturgical text is usually always placed before the first psalm. If it is not there, then you can refer to the online version, if this option is not available, then you can proceed to the following scheme:

  1. We say the opening prayer: “Through the prayers of the saints, our father, Lord, Jesus Christ, our God, have mercy on us. Amen".
  2. Further, "Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee."
  3. And then turn to the invocation of the Holy Spirit for a joint prayer with God (prayer is not only a request, but also communication): "To the Heavenly King ...".
  4. After that, you can start reading the kathisma.
  5. At each "Glory" ("Glory to the Father ..."), a memorial prayer is read.
  6. After completing it and reading the prayers after it, the prayer ends with the prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos "It is worthy ...". Because, according to the rules, if at the beginning of the prayer there was an invocation of the Holy Spirit, then it is fitting to end your communion with the Heavenly Father through a grateful appeal to the Heavenly Queen.

Psalter prayer options for peace

Sometimes for a one-time, but strong, that is, tangible for the deceased, commemoration, there is a tradition (and not without reason) to read from the entire book one kathisma, which, as it was realized through rich church experience, is most suitable for expressing the feelings and moods of the deceased himself.

Such a kathisma, unique and the most extraordinary, beautiful not only in its content, but also in its artistic expression and language, is the 17th kathisma. She is not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the longest in the entire text of the book. The reader of this chapter is given the opportunity to truly, albeit relatively briefly to remember the dear deceased, to work for him (to bring God not only a word, but also an action, work), and the praying person himself receives great benefits from this for his soul.

Prayer for the dead and the emergence of tradition

As a Christian once said, rules (read - traditions) are needed for those who have not learned to love. The remark is at least true. After all, if the heart itself does not lead a person to any good action in the name of the deceased, then one of the best options is to imitate in this those who showed their love for the dead from a full heart and received approval from the Lord. Such a person who became, one might say, the founder of the remembrance of the dead was the Old Testament commander by the traditional Hebrew name Judas. The story, which is associated with a significant event, is recorded in the body of the Old Testament in the second book of the Maccabees (see 12, 39-46).

As you know, when Abraham believed God (which was imputed to him for righteousness forever), the Almighty promised his followers that if they would keep his covenant (including not worshiping anyone other than Him), then the Jews will win all battles even with a minimal army... As long as His people kept the covenant, every battle of theirs, according to the Scriptures, was won. And then one day the army of Judah suffered a crushing defeat.

The survivors and the commander himself were in confusion, alarmed that God for some reason had rejected His word. When, according to the rules, they began to examine the bodies of the dead in order to send some of their belongings to their families, the soldiers discovered that many of them carried signs of idol worship. This became the explanation why the enemy was victorious.

The pious Jews thanked God for not hiding the truth from them and honoring them with His answer. It was then that Judas and the rest of the faithful to God stood up to pray for those who stumbled, so that the Lord would forgive the dead for their sins. After the prayer, Judas appealed to those who remained with an appeal not to depart from God, who intercedes for them and honorably observes the agreement between Himself and people, in order to avoid such horrific defeats and unnecessary death of people in the future. This act was accepted by the Almighty and highly appreciated and was "imputed to Judas for righteousness."

There were other examples of the Old Testament people, when they showed concern for the departed, professing the unconditional existence of further life after the loss of the body:

  • Jesus, the son of Sirachs, writes in his book of Wisdom that the need to help the departed is the same as those who are on earth, he teaches to do good to those who live not only here, but also there: “The grace of giving (that is, alms for the deceased, material and verbal - prayer) before everyone who lives, let it be, but also over the dead man does not forbid grace ”(7, 36);
  • The same author writes in this book: “with the reassurance of the deceased, reassure the memory of him, at the end of his soul, you will be comforted about him” (38, 23);
  • The dying Tobit commands his son Tobias: "Distribute your loaves at the grave";
  • The holy prophet Jeremiah in ch. 16 of his book calls those who are not remembered and do not give alms as damned and on behalf of God rejected.

Prayer for the deceased 40 days

Many people who do not yet believe, but are in search of the truth, are repelled by some specific figures and statements. After all, there are no fixed dates anywhere, documentary evidence that exactly after such and such a number of times, if you do certain actions, everything will be in order with a person's soul.

The video will tell you about the remembrance of the departed.

The skepticism of such people is justified and understandable. Indeed, such documents do not really exist. However, a person on the way needs to understand one thing: the only way to interact with God, as He himself said, is faith. You can draw a simple, albeit far from perfect analogy: to interact, for example, with a magnet, you need metal. This condition. Anyone who wants to start interacting with a magnet and touching its properties can express his discontent and disagreement for a long time, but still, if he does not do what is required, the magnet will remain silent.

To discover interaction with God, as countless people did, and through approaching God who received part of his properties (overcome nature, love with divine love, heal, cast out evil spirits, see the future and see the true state of affairs), you need faith. Many examples from the New Testament, where Jesus works miracles, show that the first thing that He, as God and the Son of God, seeks in man is the ability to believe Him and His omnipotence.

You can start by taking on faith some church experience and the experience of people who have already approached God, into a slightly mystical experience. We know about 40 days thanks to the blessed Theodora, a holy woman who got the opportunity posthumously, after reaching paradise, to report what she met on the way from earth to the Kingdom of God. It was she who named this figure - 40 earth days. That is how much time passed with us while she overcame this responsible path.

Thanks to the experience of Saint Theodora, we know exactly the period that is most important for one who was called from earth to another existence. We know that our constant mental presence through prayer for the called, especially necessary in the first 40 days after the physical death of a person.

Why is it the Psalter that is read

The following arguments will be indicative:

  • The Psalter is one of the most effective ways to help the deceased. As you know, demons, evil spirits, who pretend to dispose of souls on an equal basis with God, interfere with the free "flight" to their heavenly homeland.
  • The collection of psalms is an expression of the highest qualities of the human soul, which is sanctified by God, united with His Spirit and therefore has a special influence.
  • Before the advent of the New Testament, it was the Psalter that was the book that could make it possible to "scold" a person possessed by evil spirits and set him free.
  • The Psalter allows you to protect the soul ascending to God from evil spirits that traumatize it, and spiritually support the praying person, and help express all feelings to him, because this great book reflects almost all situations that a Christian finds himself in during his life on earth.

Understanding the psalms

  1. The first approach. Someone advises reading the Psalter on the dead and on the living, regardless of whether you understand what you are reading or not. The main consideration: a person does not understand, but evil spirits understand everything and retreat in fear, because God himself is at work here. After a while, a regular prayer, in turn, will eventually begin to understand, because the Lord begins to reveal meaning to a person. However, this is happening gradually.
  2. Second approach. Others strongly recommend resorting to translations into Russian, writing down incomprehensible words, expressions, terms and translating them into Russian through the Church Slavonic dictionary. It is advised to read historical information about the creation of any psalm and apply the explanations of the holy fathers and theologians.

You can find similar explanations in the church shop and on useful Christian websites. And also, in order to understand the meaning of each individual psalm, one should study the Holy Scriptures. For example, 2 Kings will explain how to understand Psalm 50. It explains what the author, King David, experienced, first wrote it.

Any reader of the Psalter(experienced or inexperienced), it is more decent to stand like a person praying (at the feet of the deceased's coffin), if a particular extreme does not force him to sit down. Negligence in this matter, as in the observance of other pious customs, is offensive both for the sacred rite blessed by the Holy Church, and for the word of God, which, with negligence, is read as if in disagreement with the intention and feeling of the praying Christian.

Video

In this video you will learn how to read the Psalter for the deceased correctly.

The Psalter occupies a special place among all the books of Holy Scripture. This book was created long before the earthly incarnation of Jesus and belongs to the books of the Old Testament. Of all the parts of the Old Testament, only the entire Psalter is included in the charter of Christian Church worship.

This book is of particular value. It lies in the image of a soul striving for the Almighty. The book provides an example of spiritual resistance to the temptations and sorrows of the earth. According to St. Athanasius the Great, this book contains the whole human life, all the thoughts and movements of the soul. In essence, there is not a single human trait that would not be reflected in this work. Every word and every letter The Psalms are imbued with the grace of the Holy Spirit.

The history of the holy book

This sacred work was loved and revered by the very first Christians. They memorized all the psalms in this book.

In the Christian ministry of the Lord, this book occupied one of the leading places already in the days of the Apostles. For many centuries, these sacred psalms were performed in all Orthodox monasteries, both male and female. Reading was an obligatory rite, and only those who knew the psalms by heart were admitted to monasteries.

Among believing Christians, it was considered the greatest charity to order the reading of the psalter. Such grace necessarily helped to gain physical health on earth and contributed to the salvation of the human soul in heaven. ... This rank was a good direct support for any monastery..

Who is it useful to read the psalter

The grace of reading Holy Scripture will condescend not only to the one for whom it was ordered, but also to other people:

  • To the one who ordered this reading, because he did a good and merciful act.
  • Of the holy monastery, as this is his main support.
  • To all the monks who took part in this rite.
  • The example of the person who ordered the reading of the psalter can inspire those around him and strengthen the faith of the person himself.

You can order reading not only for another person, but also for yourself. This is done when you need the support of the Heavenly Father. In addition, in some cases, you can read this book yourself. It is allowed to read the psalter in Russian or in Church Slavonic.

Special reading rules

The reading of this holy book is a great tradition and is based on a whole set of rules. Compliance with them is strictly mandatory. The modern Charter of the Orthodox Church provides for the division of the book into 20 sections. Each section is called kathisma. It is customary to read the Psalms daily in churches during each service in the mornings and evenings. For a week, the book of psalms must be read from beginning to end. It is re-read twice in the week of Great Lent. The reading of the psalms is also included in the rule which is prescribed for the laity.

In modern Orthodoxy, there is a custom of reading by agreement:

Reading the holy book at home

If you decide to start reading at home, don't be afraid to make a mistake and read something wrong. If you immerse yourself in the process sincerely, with prayer and repentance, it will help correct any inaccuracies. There are several guidelines how to read the psalter to a beginner:

Knowing these simple rules, every believer can bring good both to himself and to his loved ones. After all, the will and spirit of man are strengthened at the same time, and the soul rushes towards the eternal.

Removing spoilage with psalms

It often happens that outwardly a person is completely healthy and well-off, but something does not allow him to live and deprives him of mental balance. Convinced that other practical methods do not help him, a person turns to the temple for help, wishing to get rid of the evil spirit that possessed him.

Reading the psalter is the best way to remove damage. The main goal is the expulsion of demons and the return of inner peace and tranquility to a person.

With the help of the Unsleeping Psalter, you can get rid of all kinds of corruption. Many people mistrust such issues completely unreasonably. But our thoughts tend to materialize. Having once succumbed to sinful thoughts, a person allows the evil one to take possession of his soul. It is almost impossible to cope with such an enemy alone.

In such cases, reading prayers and psalms will not only be useful, but vital. This is the only way to help a person suffering from spoilage.

Unsleeping Psalter of Health

The most important for every person is his life and health. Without this, everything else loses its meaning. In those cases when you or your loved ones were trapped by a serious illness or other everyday troubles, it will be very useful to say the psalms "On health." You can order such readings in monasteries. In response to your request, the monks will tirelessly pray for many days that the Lord would grant you or your loved one health and help cope with sadness and despondency.

Such prayers can be recited not only in a church or monastery, but also at home. Anyone can turn to the Heavenly Father with sincere and fervent prayer and have the hope of being heard and accepted. However, such conversion requires a strong, sincere faith and humility from a person.

In difficult times, most people fervently hope for God's help, since they realize that without this help they cannot cope with earthly misfortunes. For us, an appeal to heaven is the “last resort” where we will definitely be heard and receive help and support.

Reading on the dead

In the Orthodox tradition, there is a custom: people turn to clergymen or specially trained people with a request to read the Psalter over the departed. At the same time, those who ask give alms for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

For those who remember, understanding the meaning of the Holy Scriptures is of no small importance. And for the departed, such reading will be evidence that they are loved and remembered. The living can work in memory of their departed loved ones, for which they resort to reading the psalter. According to the priest, Father Alexander Kalinin, this feat of reading will be accepted by the Lord as a sacrifice not only for those who have departed, but also for those who commemorate.

In the Orthodox tradition, these prayers are read over the body of the deceased before burial. After the burial, one kathisma is read. We advise you to read, how to read the psalter for the dead at home:

Thus, those who pray for the deceased can help his soul to be freed from earthly sins and achieve peace in heaven.

Another church rite of remembrance is Sorokoust. These prayers are often ordered in churches or monasteries on the day of commemoration of the deceased. In this case, monks and priests will commemorate the name of the deceased in prayers for 40 days in a row.

After such prayers, a person is forgiven all sins, and he can find grace. You can order a prayer for the deceased at the same time in several temples.

The Psalter of Repose is of no small importance not only for the deceased, but also for the one who has lost their loved one. After all, here on earth we can no longer help the departed. All that remains for us is to turn to the Lord in prayer so that the soul finds peace and bliss in heaven.

An appeal to the Mother of God

This prayer reading can be conducted about health both for yourself and for your loved ones and friends. At the same time, they turn to the Most Pure Theotokos with a request for health, since she is the closest of all the saints to the Lord.

Valaam Psalter

This is one of the very interesting varieties of church prayer reading. At the same time, the kathismas are performed by the choir of the brethren of the Valaam Monastery, which has won good fame for its piety and the abundance of miracles performed by God's will. There are only men among the monks of this monastery. Their prayers are gracious and relentless, the chants are very beautiful and euphonic.

The Valaam Psalter is a real work of the choral singing art of the Orthodox Church.

The indefatigable Psalter is of tremendous importance for all who have accepted the Lord in their hearts and trusted Him. This invisible hand leads believers through life, does not allow them to fall and go astray, giving the human soul the great miracle of Faith.

The reading of the Psalter for the dead has its origins in the most distant antiquity. Serving as a prayer to the Lord for the dead, it brings them great consolation both in itself, as reading the word of God, and as testifying to the love of their living brothers for them. It also brings them great benefit, for it is accepted by the Lord as a pleasant propitious sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those remembered - just as He generally accepts every prayer, every good deed.

The reading of the Psalter begins at the end of "Following the Exodus of the Soul." Psalms should be read with affection and contrition of the heart, without haste, attentively delving into what is being read. The reading of the Psalter is most beneficial for those who remember them: it testifies to a great degree of love and zeal for those who are remembered by their living brothers, who themselves personally want to work in their memory, and not replace themselves in work with others. The Lord will accept the feat of reading not only as a sacrifice for those who are remembered, but also as a sacrifice for those who bring it, toilers of reading. Any pious believer who has the skills of error-free reading can read the Psalter.

The position of the reader of the Psalter is the position of the one praying. Therefore, it is more appropriate for a reader of the Psalter to stand as a praying person (at the feet of the deceased), if a particular extreme does not force him to sit down. Negligence in this matter, as in the observance of other pious customs, is offensive both for the sacred rite blessed by the Holy Church, and for the word of God, which, with carelessness, is read as if in disagreement with the intention and feeling of the praying Christian.

When reading the word of God over the body of the deceased, relatives and friends of the deceased should be present. If it is impossible and not always convenient for family members and relatives to continuously participate in the prayer and reading of the Psalter, then at least from time to time they need to join their prayer to the prayer of the reader; it is especially appropriate to do this during the recitation of the funeral prayer between the psalms.

In the Apostolic ordinances, it is commanded to perform psalmics, readings and prayers for the dead on the third, ninth and fourtieth days. But mostly it became customary to read psalms for the dead for three days or all forty days. The three-day reading of the Psalter with prayers, which constitute a special burial rite, for the most part coincides with the time during which the body of the deceased remains in the house.

The Psalter consists of 20 sections - kathisma, each of which is divided into three "Glories". Before the reading of the first kathisma, the initial prayers are said, which are laid before the beginning of the reading of the Psalter. At the end of the reading of the Psalter, the prayers are recited after reading several kathismas or the entire Psalter. The reading of each kathisma begins with a prayer:

Come, let us worship our Tsar God.

Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ, our King our God.

Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ Himself, the Tsar and our God.

When reading the kathisma for each "Glory" it is said:

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia glory to Thee, God! (three times)

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the life of the everlasting departed (until the 40th day from the date of death - "newly departed") your servant , our brother and like Good and Humanitarian, forgive sins, and consume unrighteousness, weaken, forgive and forgive all his freedom sins and involuntary, deliver him eternal torment and fire of hell, and grant him the communion and enjoyment of Your eternal good, prepared by the loving You: if you sin, but do not depart from You, and it is unquestionable in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, You are glorified in the Trinity, faith, and the One in the Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, Orthodox even to the last gasp of confession.
Still merciful to that
wake up, and faith, even in Thee instead of deeds of imputation, and with Thy saints, as Abundant, rest: there is no man, who will live and not sin. But Thou art One besides all sin, and Thy righteousness, the truth forever, and Thou art the One God of mercies and generosity, and love for mankind, and we give You glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

And now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Then the reading of the psalms of kathisma continues. At the end of the kathisma it reads:

Trisagion

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (It is read three times, with the sign of the cross and a bow in the waist.)

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquity; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy. (three times)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit both now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also leave our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Deceased tropari

From the spirits of the righteous who have passed away, the soul of Thy servant, Savior, rest, preserving it in a blissful life, even with You, Human-loving

In Thy rest, Lord: where all Thy sanctuaries rest, rest the soul of Thy servant, for you alone are the Humanitarian

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Thou art God, who descended into hell and resolved the bonds of the fettered, rest the soul of Thy servant Himself.

And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

One Pure and Immaculate Virgin, who gave birth to God without a seed, pray that his souls be saved.

(Then a prayer is read, laid down at the end of the kathisma.):

According to the 1st kathisma

The Lord Almighty, Incomprehensible, the beginning of light and great power, like the Hypostatic Word, the Father and the emitter of Thy one-powerful Spirit: merciful for the sake of mercy and inexpressible goodness, not contemptuous of human nature, the contents of my sin, but with the Divine lights of Thy sacred teachings, the law and the shining prophets But for us that only-begotten Son of Thy grace to shine in the flesh, and to the illumination of us of Thy enlightenment instruct: let Thy ears be listening to the voice of our prayer, and grant us, O God, in a vigilant and sober heart, to pass away all this life of life, awaiting the coming of Thy Son and God ours, the judge of all, but not lying and sleeping, but awake and uplifting in the practice of Thy commandments to those who are clothed and in His joy we will co-exist, where they sing an unceasing voice, and the inexpressible sweetness of those who see Your face, inexpressible kindness. For God is good and lover of mankind, and we glorify Thee, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.

According to the 2nd kathisma

Master Almighty, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Only Begotten Son, give me an impertinent body, a clean heart, a cheerful mind, an unforgettable mind, an invasion of the Holy Spirit, to the acquisition and contentment of truth in Thy Christ: with Him, glory befits you, honor and worship, with the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.

According to the 3rd kathisma

O Lord Almighty, the Word of the Primordial Father, Self-perfect God Jesus Christ, mercy for the sake of Thy unapplied mercy, no longer part Thy servants, but always rest in them, do not leave me, Thy servant, All-Holy King, but give me joy and enlightenment to the unworthy my mind with the light of the knowledge of Thy Gospel, oblige my soul with the love of Thy Cross, decorate my body with Thy dispassion, keep my thoughts and my nose from encroachment, and do not destroy me with my iniquities, Good Lord, but tempt me, O God, and enlighten my heart mine, try me and lead my paths, and see if the way of iniquity is in me, and turn me away from it, and guide me on the eternal path. Thou art the Path, and the Truth, and the Belly, and we glorify Thee with Thy Beginning Father and the Most Holy, and the Good, and the Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever, amen.

According to the 4th kathisma

To Thee, O Lord, the only Good and Non-memory-wicked, I confess my sins, To Thee I cry out, unworthy: those who have sinned, O Lord, who have sinned, I am worthy to gaze at the height of heaven from the multitude of my iniquities. But, my Lord, Lord, grant me tears of tenderness, one Better and Most Merciful, as if by them I will beg you to cleanse yourself before the end of all sin: the imam's place is terrible and menacing, the bodies are parted, and a multitude of dark and inhuman demons will shake off me, and help or deliver no one to help. By this I fall to Your goodness, do not betray me to those who offend, let them boast of me, O Good Lord, lower and rekut: Thou art come into our hands, and Thou hast betrayed to us. Neither, O Lord, forget Thy compassion, and do not reward me according to my iniquity, and do not turn Thy face away from me: but Thou, O Lord, punish me, both with mercy and compassion. Let my enemy not rejoice over me, but extinguish his rebuke on me and abolish all his action, and give me a steadfast path to You, Good Lord: having been slow and sinning, did not turn to another doctor, and did not open my hands to an alien god. , do not reject my prayer, but hear me with Thy goodness and strengthen my heart with Thy fear, and may Thy grace be on me, O Lord, as fire burns unclean thoughts in me. Thou art, Lord, light, more than any light; joy, more than any joy; repose, more than any repose; true life and salvation that endures forever and ever, amen.

And from now on, intercede, and help me, and cover me, Master, from everyone who has no one else to sin before You: You weigh my nature, which is comfortable with you, You weigh my madness, You weigh what I have done, even in the knowledge and not in the knowledge, even voluntary and involuntary, even in the night and in days, and in the mind, and thoughts, as if God is Good and Humanitarian, cleanse with the dew of Thy mercy, Most Good Lord, and save us in the name for the sake of Thy holy, weigh us with fate. According to the 10th kathisma

O Lord our God, in mercy, Rich and in bounty, Incomprehensible, Alone by nature, Sinless, and for our sake, except for sin, being a Man, hear this painful prayer of mine at this hour, as I am poor and wretched from good deeds, and my heart is perturbed inside me. You weigh, the Most High King, Lord of heaven and earth, as if all my youth in sin and in the trail of the lusts of my flesh walking, all laughter was a demon, all the devil followed, I will take out in the time of sweets, roll around, darkened by thoughts from infancy, even until now, never ever want to do Thy holy will, but all from the passions that have infiltrated me, I was captivated by laughter and desecration by a demon, do not think in your mind, like the unbearable anger of the hedgehog against the sinners of Thy rebuke, and the lying hell of fire. As if I would go from here into despair, and I would never have been in the feeling of conversion, empty and naked from Your friendship. Cue did not make a kind of sin? What is the demonic business not doing? What deed of coldness and fornication is not committed with the preeminence and diligence? Remember the mind of the fleshly desecration, the body with ridiculous calcifications, the spirit with the addition of the desecrated, every oud of my accursed flesh to serve and work with the sin of the beloved. And who else does not weep for me, accursed one? Who will not mourn for me, the condemned? I am one, Master, Thy wrath for anger, I am one Thy anger on me kindled, I have done one evil thing before You, having exalted and victorious all sinners from time immemorial, incomparably sinful and unforgiven. But even before the Most-Merciful, Benevolent Thou, Thou art loving man, and expect human conversion, behold and I am throwing myself before Thy terrible and intolerable judgment, and touch Thy most pure feet, from the depths of my soul I cry out to Ty: cleanse, Lord, forgive my, Merciful Merciful. , bowing to my bewilderment, take in my prayer and do not shut up my tears, accept me repenting, and turn a deluded one, turning into an embrace and praying forgiveness. Thou didst not lay repentance for the righteous, Thou didst not lay forgiveness to those who did not sin, but Thou didst put repentance to me, a sinner, in them, in Thy indignation, naked and naked before Thy standing, Lord of heart, confess my sins: I can not see and see the height Heavenly, from the severity of my sins we slander. Enlighten the eyes of my heart and give me tenderness for repentance, and contrition of heart for correction, but with good hope and true assurance, I will go to the world there, praising and blessing I will take out Your all holy name, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever, amen.

The collection of psalms is the most popular book among Orthodox believers. Children in Russia learned not from the ABC book, but from the Psalter. The authorship is attributed to King David, he himself composed the texts and performed with a musical instrument. The psalm for the repose of the soul of the deceased is a song of repentance.

It is not known where the custom came from to read psalms for the dead, but according to legend, the apostles read psalms at the tomb of the Mother of God. It is believed that such a prayer helps not only the deceased, but also the grieving relative. So a person calms down in the grief of losing loved ones and is distracted from the hustle and bustle of life. The early Christians did not have a prayer book, but they did have a psalter.

The meaning of sacred texts:

  • the flight of the soul to heaven is hindered by evil demons who want to take possession and rule over it, and the psalter is an effective means of helping the soul on the journey;
  • psalms are an expression of the highest human qualities of the soul;
  • before the New Testament, the Psalter was the collection that made it possible to cleanse a person from evil demons;
  • holy texts allow you to protect the soul of the deceased and spiritually support the grieving person about the loss.

How to read psalm 118 for the deceased

Psalm 119 occupies a special place among the holy texts and is the longest. The text consists of twenty-two parts and eight lines, which begin with the Hebrew alphabet "alpha" "beta" and beyond. Reading the psalm makes it easier for the deceased to stay in the other world. Each person commits many sins on earth, and after the end of earthly life, he can no longer change anything.

The words of the text lift the soul to heaven and give great joy. Kathisma in Church Slavonic is difficult to read, you can choose a text in Russian and read at any time at home.

The text is divided into three sections, which follow before stanzas 73 and 131. In these places, doxology and a special prayer are read with the name of the deceased person. This text is read at the morning and evening services, it is included in the burial and funeral service. It is read with special eulogies on Holy Saturday.

Text of Psalm 118 about the deceased:

1 Blessed are the blameless in the way, walking in the law of the Lord.

2 Blessed are they that keep His testimonies, that seek Him with all their hearts.

3 They do not iniquity; they walk in His ways.

4 Thou hast commanded to keep thy precepts firmly.

5 Oh, that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!

6 Then I would not be ashamed, considering all your commandments:

7 I would praise you with righteousness of heart, learning the judgments of your righteousness.

8 I will keep thy statutes; don't leave me at all.

9 How can a young man keep his way clean? - By keeping ourselves according to Your word.

10 With all my heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments.

11 Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.

12 Blessed are You, Lord! teach me your statutes.

13 With my lips I have declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

14 On the way of Thy testimonies I rejoice, as in all riches.

15 I meditate on thy commandments, and behold thy ways.

16 I delight in thy statutes; I do not forget thy word.

17 Show mercy to your servant, and I will live and keep your word.

18 Open my eyes, and I will see the wonders of your law.

19 I am a stranger on earth; hide not thy commandments from me.

20 My soul is exhausted by the desire of thy judgments at all times.

21 Thou hast tamed the proud, the damned, who stray from Thy commandments.

22 Take away reproach and shame from me, for I keep Thy testimonies.

23 Princes sit and conspire against me, but Thy servant meditates on Thy statutes.

24 Thy testimonies are my delight, [and Thy statutes] are my counselors.

25 My soul is cast into dust; quicken me according to your word.

26 I declared my ways, and you heard me; teach me your statutes.

27 Make me understand the way of Thy precepts, and I will meditate on Thy wonders.

28 My soul languishes with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.

29 Remove from me the way of lies, and grant me thy law.

30 I have chosen the path of truth, I have set thy judgments before me.

31 I clenched to thy testimonies, Lord; don't put me to shame.

32 I will flow in the way of your commandments, when you enlarge my heart.

33 Show me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes, and I will adhere to it to the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I will keep thy law and keep it with all my heart.

35 Place me in the path of Thy commandments, for I have longed for it.

36 Incline my heart to thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

37 Turn away my eyes, so that you may not see vanity; give me life in your way.

38 Confirm your word to your servant, for the sake of reverence for you.

39 Turn away my reproach, which I fear, for Thy judgments are good.

40 Behold, I have longed for thy precepts; give me life in thy righteousness.

41 May Thy mercies come to me, O Lord, Thy salvation according to Thy word, -

42 And I will give an answer to the one who reviles me, for I trust in your word.

43 Do not take away the word of truth at all from my mouth, for I trust in your judgments.

44 And I will keep thy law always, forever and ever;

45 I will walk freely, for I have sought thy precepts;

46 I will speak of Thy testimonies before kings, and I will not be ashamed;

47 I will delight myself in Thy commandments, which I have loved.

48 I will stretch out my hands to Thy commandments, which I have loved, and I will meditate on Thy statutes.

49 Remember the word [Thy] to Thy servant, in which Thou hast commanded me to trust:

50 this is my consolation in my distress, that Thy word quickens me.

51 The proud scolded me extremely, but I did not deviate from Thy law.

52 I remembered Thy judgments, O Lord, from time immemorial, and I was comforted.

53 Terror takes hold of me at the sight of the wicked, who forsake thy law.

54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the place of my wanderings.

55 At night I remembered your name, Lord, and kept your law.

56 He became mine, for I have kept thy precepts.

57 My lot, O Lord, I said, to keep thy words.

58 I prayed to you with all my heart: have mercy on me according to your word.

59 I meditated on my ways and turned my steps to your testimonies.

60 I hastened and did not delay to keep thy commandments.

61 The nets of the wicked surrounded me, but I did not forget Thy law.

62 At midnight I got up to give thanks to you for your righteous judgments.

63 I am a companion to all that fear you and keep your precepts.

64 Thy mercy, O Lord, the earth is full; teach me your statutes.

65 Thou hast done well unto thy servant, Lord, according to thy word.

66 Teach me good understanding and knowledge, for I believe your commandments.

67 Before my suffering I was deluded; but now I have kept your word.

68 You are good and beneficent, [Lord]; teach me your statutes.

69 The proud weave lies against me; but I will keep thy precepts with all my heart.

70 Their heart was fat as fat; but I delight in Thy law.

71 It is good for me that I suffered, that I might learn Thy statutes.

72 The law of your mouth is better for me than thousands of gold and silver.

73 Thy hands made me and made me; give me understanding, and I will learn your commandments.

74 Those who fear you will see me - and rejoice that I trust in your word.

75 I know, Lord, that Thy judgments are righteous, and Thou hast punished me justly.

76 Let Thy mercy be my comfort, according to Thy word to Thy servant.

77 May your mercy come to me, and I will live; for Thy law is my delight.

78 Let the proud be ashamed, for they innocently oppress me; I meditate on Thy precepts.

79 Let those who fear You and those who know Your testimonies turn to me.

80 May my heart be blameless in Thy statutes, so that I may not be put to shame.

81 My soul longs for Thy salvation; I trust in your word.

82 My eyes fail for Thy word; I say: when will you comfort me?

83 I became like a wineskin in smoke, but I have not forgotten Thy statutes.

84 How many days are Thy servant? When will you execute judgment on my persecutors?

85 The old ones have dug a hole for me, contrary to thy law.

86 All thy commandments are truth; persecute me unfairly: help me;

87 they nearly destroyed me on earth, but I did not abandon Thy precepts.

88 According to Thy mercy, quicken me, and I will keep the testimonies of Thy mouth.

89 Forever, Lord, your word is established in heaven;

90 Thy truth to generation and generation. You set the ground and it stands.

91 According to your definitions everything is worth until now, for everything serves you.

92 If not for your law was my comfort, I would have perished in my distress.

93 I will never forget Thy precepts, for with them Thou hast quickened me.

94 I am yours, save me; for I have sought thy precepts.

95 The wicked lie in wait for me to destroy; but I delve into Thy testimonies.

96 I saw the limit of all perfection, but Your commandment is immeasurably vast.

97 How I love your law! I have been thinking about him all day.

98 By thy commandment thou hast made me wiser than mine enemies, for she is always with me.

99 I have become wiser than all my teachers, for I meditate on Thy testimonies.

100 I am more knowledgeable than the elders, for I have kept thy precepts.

101 From every evil way I have kept my feet, that I may keep thy word;

102 I will not shy away from your judgments, for you teach me.

103 How sweet are Thy words to my throat! better than honey to my lips.

104 By Thy precepts I am enlightened; therefore I hate every way of lying.

105 Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

106 I have sworn to keep thy righteous judgments, and I will do it.

107 I am greatly oppressed, Lord; quicken me according to your word.

108 But please, O Lord, to accept the free sacrifice of my mouth, and teach me your judgments.

109 My soul is always in my hand, but I do not forget Thy law.

110 The wicked have set a net for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.

111 Thy testimonies I have received as an inheritance forever, for they are the gladness of my heart.

112 I incline my heart to the fulfillment of Thy statutes forever, to the end.

113 I hate the fictions of men, but I love your law.

114 You are my cover and my shield; I trust in your word.

115 Depart from me, ye wicked, and I will keep the commandments of my God.

116 Strengthen me according to your word, and I will live; do not put me to shame in my hope;

117 support me, and I will be saved; and in Thy statutes I will persevere.

118 All who depart from Thy statutes, Thou hast cast down, for their deception is a lie.

119 Like fumes, you sweep away all the wicked of the earth; therefore I have loved your testimonies.

120 My flesh trembles with fear of Thy, and I fear Thy judgments.

121 I have done judgment and righteousness; do not deliver me to my persecutors.

122 Step in your servant for his good, so that the proud will not oppress me.

123 My eyes fail, waiting for Thy salvation and the word of Thy righteousness.

124 Deal with Thy servant according to Thy mercy, and teach me Thy statutes.

125 I am Thy servant: give me understanding, and I will know Thy testimonies.

126 It's time for the Lord to act: Your law has been ruined.

127 But I love Thy commandments more than gold and pure gold.

128 All Thy commands - I acknowledge all 'just; I hate every way of lying.

129 Thy testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul guards them.

130 The revelation of Thy words enlightens, admonishes the simple.

131 I open my mouth and sigh, for I long for your commandments.

132 Look upon me and have mercy on me, as you do with those who love your name.

133 Establish my steps in Thy word, and do not let any iniquity take possession of me;

134 Deliver me from human oppression, and I will keep thy precepts;

135 Shine on Thy servant with the light of Thy face, and teach me Thy statutes.

136 Streams of water flow from my eyes because they do not keep your law.

137 You are righteous, O Lord, and your judgments are just.

138 Thy testimonies which Thou hast commanded are righteousness and perfect truth.

139 My zeal consumes me, because my enemies have forgotten Thy words.

140 Your word is very pure, and your servant loved it.

141 I am small and despised, but I do not forget Thy precepts.

142 Thy righteousness is eternal righteousness, and Thy law is truth.

143 Sorrow and sorrow befell me; Thy commandments are my delight.

144 The righteousness of Thy testimonies is eternal: give me understanding, and I will live.

145 I cry with all my heart: hear me, O Lord, and I will keep Thy statutes.

146 I urge you to save me, and I will keep your testimonies.

147 I anticipate the dawn and cry; I trust in your word.

148 My eyes precede the morning watch, so that I may delve into your word.

150 Those who conspired in deceit drew near; they are far from thy law.

151 Thou art near, O Lord, and all Thy commandments are truth.

152 Long ago I learned about Thy testimonies, that Thou hast established them for ever.

153 Behold my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget Thy law.

154 Enter into my cause and protect me; quicken me according to your word.

155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek Thy statutes.

156 Thy compassions are many, O Lord; quicken me according to thy judgment.

157 I have many persecutors and enemies, but I do not withdraw from Thy testimonies.

158 I see apostates, and I am distressed, for they do not keep your word.

159 Behold how I love Thy precepts; according to Thy mercy, Lord, revive me.

160 The foundation of Thy word is true, and all judgment of Thy righteousness is eternal.

161 Princes persecute me innocently, but my heart fears your word.

162 I rejoice at thy word, as one who has received great profit.

163 I hate and abhor lies; I love your law.

164 Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous judgments.

165 Great peace is with those who love your law, and there is no stumbling for them.

166 I hope in Thy salvation, O Lord, and I keep Thy commandments.

167 My soul keeps Thy testimonies, and I love them dearly.

168 I keep thy precepts and thy testimonies, for all my ways are before thee.

169 May my cry draw near before Your face, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word.

170 May my prayer come before you; Deliver me according to your word.

171 My lips will utter praise when you teach me your statutes.

172 My tongue shall cry out thy word, for all thy commandments are righteous.

173 Let Thy hand be to help me, for I have chosen Thy precepts.

174 I thirst for Thy salvation, O Lord, and Thy law is my delight.

175 May my soul live and praise you, and your judgments help me.

176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep: seek Thy servant, for I have not forgotten Thy commandments.

What psalms are read for the deceased

A deceased person in the Orthodox faith up to one year is called a newly departed. Several traditions have emerged to commemorate the newly reposed:

  • reading the Psalter with a special prayer every day;
  • Forty-mouth, read in the church;
  • memorial services 3, 9, 40 days;
  • lithium on the grave of the deceased during the days of general commemoration;
  • memorial dinners and donations.

The Orthodox Church divides the path of the soul into the afterlife into three periods:

  • the soul dwells next to the body for three days;
  • from the third to the ninth day, the angels lift her up to heaven and let her see the life of paradise;
  • from the ninth to the fortieth day, the soul experiences ordeals for committed and unrepentant sins on earth;
  • on the fortieth day, it is decided where the soul will be until the hour of the Last Judgment.

The third day of the burial, after the ceremony, a memorial meal is arranged. On the ninth day, a memorial service is ordered in the church. Until the fortieth day, the psalter is read, then its reading stops.

When the body of the deceased is in the house, relatives take turns reading the psalter or inviting an experienced reader. You can read while sitting, but get up at the words "Glory" and "Hallelujah". The Psalter consists of twenty parts, after each three bows are made and a short prayer is offered.

For reading, a stand and a candle are installed at the head of the deceased. On the day of the burial, relatives agree to read psalms for the deceased up to 40 days at home.

Memorial Dukhobor psalms

The Dukhobors are representatives of the direction of Christianity that developed in Russia in the second half of the eighteenth century. The idea of the Dukhobors is that the Lord is present in any person. They do not welcome ceremonies and sacraments, clergymen and hermitage and created their own type of worship, a ritual of worship, which in the past took place in accordance with the Orthodox calendar and was the main rule of prayer every week. In an abbreviated form, the ritual could be included in the burial when parting with the deceased at the place of burial.

Before moving to the Rostov region, the Dukhobors lived in Javakheti Georgia, where the ritual of worship was carried out in a prayer house, after which they began to be carried out in residential buildings.

Psalms are a special genre of Dukhobor customs. The Dukhobors include texts associated with such sources as the Psalms, the Acts of the Holy Apostles, the Epistles of the Apostle Paul, the Revelation of John the Theologian.

The Dukhobors created a singing direction in which three parts can be distinguished. These are psalms, rhymes and songs. The uniqueness of song singing lies in the combination of styles of folk cultures. Some texts are only read, others are chanted with a closed mouth and continuous chanting of words. Each text turns on the lead singer, and such singing is similar to the Cossack.

God bless you!

Trisagion

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.(It is read three times, with the sign of the cross and a bow in the waist.)

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquity; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy.(three times)

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also leave our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Reading the Psalter for the Dead

The custom of reading the Psalter for the departed goes back to ancient times; this reading undoubtedly brings them great consolation in itself, as reading the word of God, and as testifying to the love for them and the memory of their living fellows. It also brings them great benefit, for it is accepted by the Lord as a pleasant propitious sacrifice for the cleansing of the sins of those remembered - just as He generally accepts every prayer, every good deed.

Psalms should be read with affection and contrition of the heart, without haste, attentively delving into what is being read.

Of course, one who is capable of this and has certain knowledge appropriate for serving a sacred cause can take upon himself the reading of the Psalter at the grave of the deceased. The sacrificial impulse of commemorating relatives or friends of the deceased can in many ways, but not in everything, make up for their poor preparedness. In addition, the reading of the Psalter at the tomb should be as continuous as possible, and this requires several successive readers. Therefore, there is a custom to invite for sacred reading people capable of it, adding to this invitation the giving of alms for those who are remembered. However, in any case, the duty of attention to the word of God and prayer for the soul of the deceased lies not with one reader of the Psalter, but also with the relatives of the deceased.

The very reading of the Psalter for the dead is of two kinds. The first is a strict reading of the Psalter over the grave of the deceased in the coming days and weeks after his death - for example, until the 40th day. The reading of the divinely inspired psalms of David should ideally be a daily private occupation of Orthodox Christians, therefore it is common to combine the private (home) reading of the Psalter with the remembrance of the living and the dead - this is another kind of reading the Psalter with commemoration.

If the Psalter is read only for the deceased, before the first kathisma, the Canon is necessarily read for the one who has died. After the canon - "It is worthy to eat .." and further to the end, as indicated in the rank of the private reading of the Canon for the one who died.

When the Psalter is read at the tomb of the deceased, then first, the present priest performs the Follow-up according to the exodus of the soul and body. Then the reader begins to read the Psalter.

At the end of the entire Psalter, the reader reads the Canon again for the one who has died, and after him the reading of the Psalter begins again, and this is repeated throughout the entire reading of the Psalter for the deceased.

“When reading the Psalter at the grave of the deceased,” writes Vladyka Afanasy (Sakhorov) in his exhaustive study “On the Commemoration of the Dead According to the Statute of the Orthodox Church,” “there is no need to read the troparia and prayers assigned for the usual cell rule according to the kathisma. It will be more appropriate in all cases, and after each “Glory:” and after kathisma, read a special memorial prayer. The practice of Ancient Russia consecrated the use in this case of that funeral troparion, which should end the cell reading of the funeral canons: “Remember, O Lord, the soul of your deceased servant,” and during the reading, five bows are required, in the troparion itself it is read three times. According to the same ancient practice, the reading of the Psalter after the repose is preceded by the reading of the Canon for the deceased, after which the reading of the Psalter begins. After reading all the psalms, the memorial Canon is again read, after which the reading of the first kathisma begins again. This order continues throughout the reading of the Psalter for the repose ”.

Now a somewhat different tradition of reading the Psalter at the tomb has spread: according to the first and second "Glory:" of the kathisma, the prayer "Remember, our Lord our God ..." and the prayer placed after kathisma. This reading order is recommended in the Psalter of the publication of the Moscow Patriarchate (1973) and some other editions.

When reading the Psalter at the grave of the deceased, one should take into account the tradition and each time precede the reading of the 1st kathisma with the reading of the funeral canon.

In conclusion, it remains only to add that it is more appropriate for any reader of the Psalter (experienced or non-experienced) to stand like a praying person (at the feet of the deceased), if a particular extreme does not force him to sit down. Negligence in this matter, as in the observance of other pious customs, is offensive both for the sacred rite blessed by the Holy Church, and for the word of God, which, with carelessness, is read as if in disagreement with the intention and feeling of the praying Christian.

Follow when reading the Psalter for the departed

The reading of each kathisma begins with a prayer:

Come, let us worship our Tsar God.

Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ, our King our God.

Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ Himself, the Tsar and our God.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia glory to Thee, God! (thrice.),

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

(Then a prayer petition for the deceased is read, "Remember, our Lord our God ...", which is at the end of the "Pursuit of the departure of the soul," and the name of the deceased is remembered on it with the addition (until the fortieth day from the day of death) the word "newly departed"):

Then the reading of the psalms of kathisma continues).

Lord have mercy. (three times);

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit both now and forever and forever and ever. Amen

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also leave our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

Tropari

From the spirits of the righteous who have passed away, the soul of Thy servant, Savior, rest, preserving it in a blissful life, even with You, Human-loving

In Thy rest, Lord: where all Thy sanctuaries rest, rest the soul of Thy servant, for you alone are the Humanitarian

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit:

Thou art God, descended into hell and letting the chains of the fettered, rest Himself and the soul of Thy servant

And now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

One Pure and Immaculate Virgin, who gave birth to God without a seed, pray that his souls be saved.

Lord have mercy (40 times)
(Then a prayer is recited at the end of the kathisma.)

The sacred duty of every Orthodox Christian is to read prayers for loved ones who have left our mortal world. The Psalter for the Dead is a divine service book that is recommended to be read for forty days from the moment of death. This will allow you to avoid wandering in stereotypes, conventions and rules that have overgrown this God-pleasing deed - a prayer for the soul of a deceased loved one.

How Orthodoxy understands the dead

Today, in order to commemorate the dead, one should read the Psalter, which is a collection of Old Testament psalms. Reading begins on the day the death was recorded. This can be done both in person, that is, being near the coffin of the deceased, and in absentia - while at home. As a rule, one reads for up to forty days, after which the reading stops. The reader can either say a prayer aloud or not.

The Psalter for the Departed has long taken its rightful place among the Liturgical Services, because about half of the texts spoken during the church service are taken from this book. It is allowed to be read while sitting, therefore it is called a "sit-down" book, but you can do it while standing. The only prohibition concerns the recumbent position.

According to the Holy Fathers, who have acquired the Holy Spirit, thanks to their attitude to the Heavenly Father, prayers, during the reading of which there is no sorrow in the heart and the body does not bother, will not be heard by God. The permission to read the Psalter while sitting is intended to separate the New Testament from the Old. After all, the Gospel is not allowed to be read except while standing.

At its core, the Psalms for the Dead are a collection of psalms. These are semi-prayerful, semi-poetic texts, which reflect practically all the existing states of a person who has already begun his relationship with the Heavenly Father. They were written by several authors, but the main content was written by the Old Testament king, whose name was David. Among the laity, he became famous for his battle with Goliath.

However, God loves him for other merits:

  • Meekness.
  • Good-naturedness.
  • The ability to forgive.
  • Lack of desire to take revenge on your enemies.

All these qualities, given to us by God, were extremely rare in the time of David. For this reason, this saint before our Lord expressed his feelings in psalms, which set everyone who reads them in a peaceful mood.

And when the soul is filled with a state and mood in tune with God, it is pleasing to the Heavenly Father. Therefore, he hears her and is ready to respond to requests and needs coming from her. Through this, great benefit can be rendered to the deceased.

The text of the Psalter for the departed up to 40 days, so that it is easy to read, is divided into twenty chapters. Each of them is called "kathisma". It, in turn, includes three or four psalms. In accordance with the pious tradition, one of the first three days after death, but before burial, one must read the entire book in full near the tomb of the deceased.

Psalter reading scheme

Vladyka Afanasy (Sakharov) devoted many works to help understand the order of reading the Psalter for the dead. They were told that only the observance of some rules will allow to carry out everything without additional difficulties, efficiently and correctly. In his opinion, there is no need to recite the prayer that is located after each of the kathismas.

Their purpose is a simple secret rule. We are talking here about those cases when people include in their daily prayer rule additionally several kathisma from the Psalter. And they do this solely for the sake of prayer to the Lord.

Vladyka also says that it should be considered more "appropriate" to say a special prayer for the dead not only after each "Glory" (Glory to the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit), but also after the completion of the kathisma. Her opening words: "Remember, O Lord our God, in faith and hope ...". In addition, according to Vladyka, the position of five bows to the earth befits. At the same time, the troparion itself is read three times.

Ancient practice is prescribed to precede the memorial reading of the Psalter by reading Konon for the deceased. After its completion, the psalms begin. After reading the entire book, you should again return to the funeral Canon. And after that you can return to the divinely inspired book. And then in the same way, throughout the entire time of reading the Psalter for the repose.

In what order are the psalms read?

The order in which the reading of the Psalter about the deceased is carried out is clearly established. The place of this church liturgical text, as a rule, is placed before the first psalm. The following scheme can be used:

  1. The opening prayer is recited: “Through the prayers of the saints, our father, Lord, Jesus Christ, our God, have mercy on us. Amen".
  2. Further "Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee."
  3. After that, the Holy Spirit is called to pray together with God "Heavenly King ...". We must not forget that prayer is not only a request, it is also communication.
  4. They begin to read the kathisma.
  5. Each "Glory" ("Glory to the Father ...") is accompanied by the reading of a memorial prayer.
  6. At the final stage of the prayers, they turn with a prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos "It is worthy ...". In accordance with the rules, the prayer, which begins with the calling of the Holy Spirit, should end with a grateful appeal to the Queen of Heaven.

Prayer for the deceased 40 days

A large number of people who are not yet believers, but who are in search of truth, are confused by categorical statements and specific numbers. After all, there are no deadlines that have been fixed and documented, through which everything is normalized with the human soul, subject to the implementation of certain actions.

And these people can be understood. No one has ever documented anything like this. But here a person must understand one truth for himself: one can interact with God only through faith. And the Lord himself spoke about it.

In this regard, a very simple, although perhaps imperfect, analogy can be drawn: in order for a magnet to begin to show its properties, it needs a metal. This is a prerequisite. Anyone who wants to start interacting with the magnet in a different way in order to touch its properties can express their disagreement and displeasure, but the magnet will still be silent.

The discovery for a person of interaction with God is possible only through faith. And this path has already passed a huge number of people. Some of them, by approaching God, were able to obtain some of his properties:

  • Overcoming nature.
  • To love with divine love.
  • Heal.
  • Exorcise evil spirits.
  • Behold the future.
  • Realize the true state of affairs.

Based on the many examples from the New Testament in which Jesus performs miracles, we can say that in man he, being God and the Son of God, seeks the ability to carry unconditional faith in Him and His omnipotence.

We need to start small: believe in the presence of some church experience, as well as people who have already approached God. Even despite the fact that the experience may, at first glance, seem somewhat mystical.

Thus, information about forty days was brought to us by Blessed Theodora. This holy woman was given the opportunity after her death to tell that it took her so many days to reach Paradise. She also told what the human soul has to face while it moves from the earth to the Kingdom of God. After that, this figure appeared - 40 days.

The experience of Saint Theodora helped us to know exactly about that period, which is very important for those who have already been called from the mortal earth to another existence. Therefore, we know for sure why a deceased person needs our continuous presence for forty days so much.

Why is it the Psalter that is read

This is justified by the following arguments:

  • The Psalter is considered one of the most effective ways to help the deceased. After all, everyone knows that on the path that the soul overcomes to the newly acquired heavenly homeland, demons are building various intrigues for it. These evil spirits claim the right to be the same stewards of souls, like the Lord himself.
  • The collection of psalms expresses the highest qualities of the human soul, sanctified by God, united with His Spirit and therefore having a special influence.
  • Until the New Testament appeared, it was with the help of the Psalter that it was possible to accomplish the liberation of a person from evil spirits.
  • With the help of the Psalter, the soul ascending to God is protected from the evil spirits seducing it. He spiritually supports the one who is praying. It helps to express all your feelings, which is facilitated by the reflection in this great book of all situations that may arise for a Christian on a long life path.

Understanding the psalms

  1. Option one. According to some, the Psalter should be read regardless of whether the reader understands the meaning of the reading. The main argument is the assertion that even when a person is not given to understand the essence of what he has read, it is clear to evil spirits. And they retreat, feeling here the action of God himself. After some time, a person who regularly prays understands the meaning of the text, since the Lord begins to reveal it to him. This process is not fast, but it still happens gradually.
  2. Option two. Its supporters believe that translations of texts into modern Russian should be used. If the text contains terms, expressions or words that cannot be understood, then, in the opinion of the adherents of this version, they should be translated into Russian, using the Church Slavonic dictionary for this purpose. They advise you to refer to historical information about how this or that psalm was created and to use the explanations of theologians and holy fathers.

If desired, such explanations can be found in the shop at the church or on cognitive Christian sites. A good way to understand the meaning inherent in each individual psalm is to study the Holy Scriptures. For example, explanations for the fiftieth psalm can be found in the Second Book of Kings, which tells about all the experiences of King David that prompted him to write it.

For any reader of the Psalter, regardless of his experience, it is better to stand praying if there is no urgent need to sit down. At the same time, no negligence can be allowed, since it offends the sacred rite, blessed by the Holy Church and the word of God. If read casually, it cannot correspond to the feelings and intentions of the praying Christian.

Order of reading the Psalms for the departed

The reading of each kathisma begins with a prayer:

Come, let us worship our Tsar God. Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ, our King our God. Come, let us worship and fall down on Christ Himself, the Tsar and our God.

Even so, be merciful to that, and faith, even in Thee instead of deeds of imputation, and with Thy saints, as Abundant, rest: there is no man, who will live and not sin. But Thou art One besides all sin, and Thy righteousness, the truth forever, and Thou art the One God of mercies and generosity, and love for mankind, and we give You glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Christian's parting words before death and prayers for the dead

The meaning of the 17th kathisma

During all forty days after the death of a person, his family and friends should read the Psalter. How many kathisma a day depends on the time and effort of the readers, but by all means reading should be daily. When the entire Psalter has been read, it is read from the beginning. Just do not forget that after each “Glory. ”It is necessary to read a prayer petition for the commemoration of the deceased (from“ Following on the departure of the soul from the body ”). Many relatives and friends of the deceased, referring to the fact that they do not have time or do not have the Psalter, or do not know how to read in Church Slavonic, entrust this reading to others (readers) for a fee or other remuneration. But prayer will be stronger, sincere, purer if a loved one or a loved one to the deceased person himself asks God for mercy on the deceased.

On the third, ninth, fortieth days, one should read the deceased 17th kathisma.

This kathisma depicts the bliss of those who walked in the law of the Lord, i.e. the bliss of righteous people who tried to live according to the commandments of God.

The meaning and meaning of the 118th psalm are revealed in the 19th verse: "I am a stranger (wanderer) on earth: do not hide your commandments from me." Explanatory Bible, ed. A.P. Lopukhina gives this verse the following explanation: “Life on earth is a wandering, a journey made by a person to reach his fatherland and permanent, eternal abode. Obviously, the latter is not on the ground, but behind the grave. If so, then earthly life must be prepared for the afterlife and only an unmistakably chosen path on earth can lead to it. How and where to find the last one? This path is indicated in the commandments of the Law. He who does not follow them is delusional and will not reach the afterlife, i.e. the afterlife as a reward for the labors incurred to achieve it. Here is a rather clear teaching about the purpose of earthly existence, the immortality of the human soul and the afterlife reward ”.

Thy hand create me and create me, give me reason, and I will learn Thy commandment. Those who fear You will see me and rejoice, as in Your words, hopes. Reason, O Lord, as the truth of Thy fate, and thou hast humbled me for the victory. Be Thy mercy, let Thy servant comfort me according to Thy word. May Your bounties come to me, and I will live, as Your law is My teaching. Let the proud men be ashamed, for you have unrighteously wicked against me, but I will scoff at Your commandments.

Let those who fear You and those who lead Your testimonies convert me. Let my heart be blameless in Thy justification, for I will not be ashamed. My soul disappears into Thy salvation, on Thy words, hopes. My eyes disappeared into Thy word, saying: When will you comfort me? There was nothing like a fur on a slate, I have not forgotten Your excuses. Is Koliko the day of Thy servant? When will you create judgment from those who persecute me? Thou hast told me the transgressors of mockery, but not like Thy law, O Lord. All your commandments are true; unrighteously chasing me, help me. In male I did not end up on earth, but I did not abandon Thy commandments. Live me according to Thy mercy, and I will keep the information of Thy mouth. For ever, Lord, Thy word is in Heaven. Thy truth to generation and generation. Thou hast founded the earth, and abides. The day abides by Thy discipline: as all work is done for Thee. As if it were not for your law, my teaching was, then you would have perished in my humility. I will never forget Thy justifications, for in them Thou didst revive me.

Thine am I, save me: as for Thy justifications for seeking. If you are waiting for a sinner, destroy me, your witnesses are minds. Every end has seen the end, Thy commandment is broad. If we love Thy law, O Lord, my teaching is all day long. Much more my enemy has made me wise, Thy commandment, as in my age is. More than all those who teach me, minds, as if your dates are my teaching. Even the elder understands, like Thy commandments are exacting. From every way of deceit, restrain my feet, for I will keep Thy words. You have not deviated from your destinies, as you have ordained me. How sweet is thy word to my throat: more than honey with my mouth. From Thy commandments of mind: for this sake have we hated every path of unrighteousness. The lamp of my feet is Thy law, I am the light of my paths. Swear, and set them up to preserve the fate of Thy righteousness. Humble yourself to the brink, Lord, live me according to your word. The free lips of my lips are well pleased, Lord, and teach me your destinies. I will take out my soul into Thy hand, and I have not forgotten Thy law. I have laid the sinner's net for me, and have not gone astray from Thy commandments. The inheritance of Thy dates for ever, as the joy of my heart is the essence. Incline my heart, make Thy justifications in the age of retribution. Hate of the law, but your law is your beloved. Thou art my helper and my Protector, in Thy words, hopes. Depart from me who are evil, and I will try the commandments of my God. Step on me according to Thy word, and I will live, and do not put me to shame because of my expectation. Help me, and I will be saved, and I will learn in Thy justification I will take out. Thou hast despised all that depart from Thy justifications, for their thinking is unrighteous. All sinful earth is transgressing without food, for this, for the sake of the beloved, Thy testimonies. Nail Thy fear into my flesh: for Thy fate we have feared. Having done judgment and righteousness, do not betray me to those who offend me. Receive Thy servant for good, lest pride be slandered against me. My eyes disappear into Thy salvation and into the word of Thy righteousness: do with Thy servant according to Thy mercy, and teach me about Thy justification. Thy servant I am: give me understanding, and we will see Thy testimonies. Time to make the Lord: destroy Your law. For this, for the sake of the beloved, Thy commandments are greater than gold and topazium. For this reason, for the sake of all Thy commandments, direct them, every path of unrighteousness they hate. Wonderful are Thy dates: for this reason I am tested my soul. The manifestation of Thy words enlightens and admonishes infants. My mouth was opened, and my spirit was attracted, as if commanding Thy desires.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, halleluia, halleluia, glory to You God. (Three times)

Lord have mercy ( Three times).

Now, O God, Most Merciful and Loving, O Lord, not even though the death of a sinner, but expect and accept conversion: I will correct the overthrown, heal the contrite, turn me to repentance, and correct the overthrown, and heal the contrite of the ages: remember Thy generosity too. goodness and my immeasurable forget the iniquity, even in deed, word, and thought of those who have been committed: allow the blinding of my heart, and give me tears of tenderness to cleanse the filth of my thought. Hear, Lord, look out, more Human-loving, cleanse, more gracefully, and from the torment of the reigning passions in me, my cursed freedom soul. And let sin contain me for someone: below may a demon beggar against me, below to his will, let him lead me, but with Your sovereign hand, you have subdued me from his dominion, You reign in me, Good and Human-loving Lord, and of all Your being and life. other things to me according to Your good will. And grant me with the inexpressible goodness of the heart purification, preservation of lips, the righteousness of deeds, humble subtlety, peace of thoughts, the silence of my spiritual strength, spiritual joy, true love, longsuffering, kindness, meekness, unfeigned faith, obsessive abstinence, and fulfill all my good fruits with a gift Your Holy Spirit. And do not elevate me to the knowledge of my days, I am not corrected below and I am not ready to delight my soul: but perfect me with Thy perfection, and lead me this way of this life, for let me pass the beginning and the power of darkness unrestrainedly, I will see through Thy grace, and through Thy unapproachable glories, kindness inexpressible, with all your saints, in them you will be sanctified and glorified with your all-honorable and magnificent name, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

Why read the Psalter for the Dead? Where did this tradition come from? What are the stories of writing Psalms 50 and 90? Is it true that earlier in Russia they learned to read not from the ABC book, but from the Psalter? You will find answers to these questions in this article. You will also learn how to write the Psalms of Repose and understand what you read.

What is the Psalter and what is the secret of its popularity?

One of the most beloved and popular books of all Christians is the Psalter - a book of psalms. The Jews called psalms prayer hymns dedicated to the Lord and sung to the accompaniment.

The ability to compose psalms was considered a great gift, and King David, who is credited with the authorship of the Psalms - 151 psalms (in some translations 150). Most of these hymns were actually written by David. The king put all shades of emotion into them: he thanked the Lord, tearfully prayed for help, repented of his sins, prophesied about the fate of the Israeli people.

How was Psalm 50 written?

This psalm is a song of repentance. What did the king regret? Once he was seduced by the beauty of Bathsheba, the wife of his warrior Uriah. In order to "remove" his legitimate husband, he gave the order to put a warrior in the battle with the Ammonites in the place where he would definitely be killed. When Bathsheba became a widow, David took her to his palace and married her. But the king sincerely repented of his wicked deed, and the prophet Nathan accused him of sin. The Lord also punished David: the first son of Bathsheba was born dead. After the endowment, the king prayed and fasted for a long time. The result of this secret prayer was Psalm 50.

What psalm protects against unclean spirits?

No less famous is Psalm 90, which the holy fathers advise to protect oneself from unclean spirits. The main meaning of the hymn is that the Lord will surely protect the one who trusts in God. So it was in the history of King David. Through prayers, the Lord delivered from a three-day pestilence plague, from an epidemic of which tens of thousands of people died.

These are just two examples of famous hymns. In fact, there are many more of them. Believers use them in church prayer and personal, read the Psalter on the dead and on the living. How did this tradition come about?

Instead of the first prayer book and ... a primer

We often hear hymns during the Liturgy, at the evening service, memorial service, and we do not even know that they are actually taken from the Psalter.

In both the Jewish and Christian traditions, love for the psalms was passed down from generation to generation.

According to legend, over the tomb of the Virgin, the apostles sang the hymns of King David. Children and adults in Russia learned to read not from the ABC book, but from the Psalter. The famous saint, Sergius of Radonezh, in his childhood was very worried that he could not read the psalms smoothly, clearly, without mistakes and hiccups.

Today, children no longer learn to read and write from the Book of the Psalmist David. But over time, as adults, they often come to faith and realize the importance of hymns of praise. Reading and deeply delving into the texts of King David, we accumulate the prayer experience of many generations of Christians.

Such a prayer, if it is done with faith, sincerely, with a desire to penetrate and understand, is pleasing to God. That is why it is customary to pray according to the Psalter both for the dead and for the living.

Why read the Psalter for the Dead?

Such a prayer is useful not only for the deceased, but also for those who turn to hymns. If this is a relative grieving from the loss, then while reading, he calms down, distracts from the hustle and bustle of life and thinks about salvation.

In the days of the first Christians, there were no such solemn services as ours, there were no many prayers, canons, akathists. There were no prayer books. The only thing they had was the Psalter and fervent prayer from the bottom of their hearts.

Over time, various prayer orders appeared, but the hymns of King David did not lose their importance. In private (home) prayer, Orthodox Christians usually read the Psalter, pray for the living and the dead, and add various petitions (what they ask God for).

How to read the Psalter for the departed?

For ease of reading, the Psalter is divided into 20 parts - kathisma. In each kathisma, besides the psalms, there are also three "Glories". At the glories, it is customary to remember the names of the living and the dead. You will learn more about why and how to pray for the dead with the words of the Psalms of David in the article "Psalter for the Departed - We Read It Correctly."

When to start and for how long to read the kathisma for the deceased? There is no definite answer here, but a general recommendation can be made: start praying hard for the first 40 days as early as possible (in Orthodoxy it is believed that during this time it will be determined whether the soul will stay in heaven or hell until the Second Coming, so the prayer of relatives can help the deceased) ...

How many psalms or kathisma to read? Usually believers read one kathisma a day. It is customary to read the 17th kathisma about the repose. It is she who is used in funeral services. But if there are a lot of people who want to pray for the deceased, then the kathisma can be divided so that the Psalter can be read in full for the deceased one day. Whether this will succeed depends on the wishes of the believers.

After 40 days, do not interrupt the prayer. The dead need our spiritual support, of which the psalms are part. If you continue to read Kathisma every day, then remember on the first two "Glories" the names about health, and on the third - about repose.

How do you learn to understand the psalms?

A popular question that worries many believers: how to understand the Psalter, especially if you read it in Church Slavonic?
Usually the answers of priests and theologians are somewhat different.

  • Someone advises you to read the Psalter on the Dead and on Health anyway, even if you don't understand. The main argument: you don't understand, but the evil spirits understand everything and run away. Over time, the earnest prayer will also begin to understand. God reveals.
  • Others recommend using translations into Russian, writing out individual words, and using a dictionary from Church Slavonic to translate them into Russian. It is best to read the historical information about the writing of each hymn and use the interpretations of the holy fathers and theologians.

You can find such explanations both in the church shop and on useful Christian sites. Also, to understand the meaning of the hymns, one must study the Holy Scriptures. What David experienced before writing Psalm 50 is described in 2 Kings.

How can you describe the depth of the loss of a loved one? It is very difficult to survive. Many fall into extreme despondency and lose the meaning of life. But Orthodoxy gives every believer hope - for eternal life, for being in the Kingdom of Heaven. After all, with God everyone is alive.

It is believed that every Orthodox Christian is obliged to pray for his departed. For this, there are codes of different traditions, rules and terms.

In order to avoid wandering in the rules, conventions and stereotypes, which for more than 2 thousand years has enriched this work of love - a prayer for a loved one.

It starts with words "Remember, O Lord our God, in faith and hope ..." ...

  • Jesus, the son of Sirachs, writes in his book of Wisdom that the need to help the departed is the same as those who are on earth, he teaches to do good to those who live not only here, but also there: “The grace of giving (that is, alms for the deceased, material and verbal - prayer) before everyone who lives, let it be, but also over the dead man does not forbid grace ”(7, 36);
  • The same author writes in this book: “with the reassurance of the deceased, reassure the memory of him, at the end of his soul, you will be comforted about him” (38, 23);
  • The dying Tobit commands his son Tobias: "Distribute your loaves at the grave";
