Complete restoration of wooden furniture

When treating furniture surfaces, use skinny oil varnishes with a polyurethane base (the so-called sanding). Their main advantage is fast drying and the formation of a dense film that can be sanded to gloss. Oil varnishes are perfect for almost all wood surfaces.
- Acrylic varnishes is an aqueous solution of acrylic resin, like an emulsion, safe for humans and practically odorless. During application, it has a milky tint. After complete drying, the varnish becomes transparent. You can work with the composition in a heated dry room.
- Surfaces covered with nitrocellulose varnish, can be easily polished and sanded. Cannot be used on thick polished surfaces. In addition, the disadvantage of this paint and varnish material is sensitivity to temperature changes, high abrasion, poor chemical resistance.
- Cold curing varnishes solidify in the "cross-polymerization" process, which requires an acid catalyst. As a result, the coating is durable and non-yellowing, as well as resistant to wear and temperature changes. Such paints and varnishes can be black or opaque.
- Two-component polyurethane varnishes- do not freeze without adding an isocyanate hardener to them. Its required amount is added to the composition immediately before starting work. Such products create a transparent coating that is more wear-resistant than what is obtained with oil varnish. But these paints and varnishes are dangerous to human health if you work with them in an unventilated room.

Features of a partial restoration
Oak products are quite strong, so the restoration of oak furniture is mostly partially carried out. In this case, techniques such as decoupage or artificial aging are used. Let's take a closer look at how to partially restore wooden furniture. For this, we prepare the following tools:
- adhesive composition for decoupage;
- acrylic-based paints;
- scissors;
- napkins with the desired pattern;
- craquelure varnish.
Consider how the restoration of old furniture with your own hands is going on using the example of the tabletop of an old table. When upgrading some parcels, they should be fenced off from others. 2. White spots from water, alcohol, hot water are removed in a more complicated way. Here polishing alone is not enough. The removal method depends on the depth of the damage.
3. An antique object, on which ancient varnishes have lost their beauty, is restored by the method of regenerating varnish films.
The shellac coating is not sanded, but, on the contrary, is built up with a tampon moistened with polish.
With light circular movements, the restorer applies the thinnest layers of shellac layer by layer. The slightest inaccuracy, a delay in the movement of the tampon and the old varnish coating, will collapse from alcohol vapors, turn into a cloudy spot. Restorers call this phenomenon burn-through. Soft restorative wax is much easier to use, it is used to rub the area with a lot of scratches. In both cases, after the wax hardens, the surface is subjected to high-quality polishing. Also, furniture is being restored from chipboard (chipboard), on which many scratches and scuffs have formed.

- 30 grams of turpentine;
- 20 grams of alcohol;
- 40 grams of wax;

- Stain of the desired color;
- White spirit, for dissolving varnish;
- Special primer for wood;
- Putty mixture for wood;
- Sandpaper of different fractions from 100 to 3000;
- Masking tape;
- Brushes and rollers.
The algorithm for performing the work is as follows:
- In case of incomplete restoration, the surface, on which there is no damage, is pasted over with tape;
- The damaged area is treated with White Spirit to remove the old varnish;
- Primer is applied on wood and left to dry completely;
- The chip is putty with a special compound so that a small tubercle appears on the surface;
- As soon as the putty is completely dry, it is cleaned with sandpaper;
- Wipe the area with a damp suede cloth and apply a stain of the desired color.
The work must be carried out carefully so that the stain does not get on the intact area, otherwise the tree will darken and you will have to carry out a complete restoration. Once the stain is dry, the repaired area can be varnished. Varnish for furniture restoration is applied with a brush, if the area is small, or with a roller.
It is necessary to cover the surface in several layers, while each subsequent one, after drying, is sanded with sandpaper with an abrasiveness of 800 units. The last layer must be polished with a special polish.

- Veneer restoration begins with an inspection of the item. If swelling appears on the surface, then you need to take a syringe with a thick needle, into which to type PVA construction glue. Gently pierce the swelling with a needle and squeeze the glue inward. Lay a piece of clean cloth on the site, place the load. If the veneer sticks unevenly, this place should be heated with an iron or a bag of hot salt;
- A small peeled piece of veneer should not be cut evenly with a knife, it is better to break it off. The uneven edges of the crease are much easier to join. Then the fragment should be cleaned from the old glue, apply a new layer of adhesive and attach the part to the fracture site. Put on a rag and place the load;
- If repair of scratches is required, then it is carried out in the same way as when restoring wooden furniture: small ones are covered with furniture pencil, deep ones are filled with wax. After drying, the restoration wax is sanded, polished and varnished.
Restoring luxury furniture on your own requires special care and patience. Do not rush - smear with the composition, wait until dry, sand and smear again, and so on several times. There are different methods, in some situations you have to use several methods in order to achieve the desired effect.

If with the help of putty and varnish it is not possible to recreate the former beauty of the furniture, you need to restore wooden or complete restoration of Soviet furniture with your own hands. The work is carried out in stages, the sequence of which must be strictly observed.

Before proceeding with the removal of furniture varnish or paint from the surface of furniture, you need to purchase a special remover. The restoration of Italian furniture from precious woods is a very responsible occupation, therefore, emulsion-based washes are used. This material is not toxic, the harm to wood is minimal. - As soon as the remover hits the varnish, the corrosion process begins. Apply the material with a special flute brush and wait. Polyester varnishes will wear off after 2-3 hours, alcohol compositions in 30 minutes;

- After applying the material, all furniture must be well wrapped with paraffin-impregnated paper and secured with twine or twine;
- Remains of old paint or varnish can be removed after the time indicated on the packaging with a remover. A simple spatula can be used for cleaning;
- Further, the entire surface is degreased with a solvent.
After carrying out these actions, the furniture is left to dry for several hours. Then you should walk along it with a sandpaper along the fibers and wipe it off with a damp cloth.

What material to use for varnishing
When choosing a tool for varnishing furniture, you need to be guided by the advice of professionals, for example:
- Water-based varnishes are used to restore furniture at home in children's rooms. They do not have an unpleasant odor, they dry quickly, and do not cause allergic reactions. There is a small minus - after drying, they become dull, which some do not like;
- Alkyd varnishes are advised to be used by people who have no experience in varnishing surfaces. They are easy to use and fit exactly the first time. Even if there was a leak during application, it is easy to wash it off;
- Polyurethane compounds are the most difficult to apply: firstly, special equipment is needed to apply them, and secondly, they have an unpleasant odor. But it is worth noting that such a coating will last much longer than all of the above materials;

The surface to be varnished must be smooth. Before applying furniture varnish, buy two soft brushes. After applying the first coat of varnish, take a new tool.

- Complete disassembly;
- Wooden elements should be well sanded along the grain and wiped with a soft damp cloth to remove dust from the product;
- Cover the parts with wood primer and let dry well;
- For staining, it is better to use spray paints, as they lie much smoother. In this case, three layers of paint will be enough. As soon as the paint dries, a layer of protective furniture varnish is applied to the surface;
- Remove the upholstery and take out the filler. To choose the way in which the restoration of upholstered furniture will be carried out, you need to know the features of the updated product.
