Today manufacturers offer a lot of solutions to this issue. but the best option the door cladding is considered to be a self-adhesive film. We will tell you about the advantages of this decorative product, in which cases it is used, as well as provide step-by-step installation instructions.

Advantages and disadvantages of the material

The film looks great on walls, doors, countertops and other interior items

To make sure that the decision is justified to cover the worn-out door leaf with a film, you should consider in more detail the characteristics of the finishing element. At its core, self-adhesive is a polymer material. In most cases, it is a PVC film, on which a binder mass is applied on one side, and on the other - decoration... Thus, due to the unnecessary application of an additional layer of glue on the product, installation finishing material performed very quickly, neatly and effortlessly. In addition to ease of installation, self-adhesive films have the following positive qualities:

  • Strength and durability. It is a tough material with virtually no scratches.
  • High moisture resistance. The product is water and steam resistant, making it perfect for use in the kitchen or bathroom.
  • A wide range of products. An incredible number of colors will allow you to choose the most suitable option... Available in plain and patterned models, mirror surface, photo print.
  • The film does not damage the door leaf.
  • The ability to hide minor defects. With the help of the film, you can mask the flaws in the door leaf that appeared during its long-term operation.
  • Ease of maintenance. Dry grease and dirt can be easily removed from the self-adhesive with an ordinary detergent.
  • Films are not exposed to sunlight, therefore they are used for cladding external doors.
  • Acceptable cost. It is much more profitable to use self-adhesive than any other finishing material.

However, such films have disadvantages, albeit insignificant:

  • The need for surface preparation.
  • Impossibility of reuse.
  • In case of inaccurate gluing, the material may soon move away from the surface.

Application area

As you have seen, self-adhesive film has a lot of advantages. But the main thing is that it is universal and can be glued to almost any surface. Manufacturers recommend using the product for door cladding made of chipboard, MDV, PVC and other similar budget materials, which often have an expressionless appearance and wear out quickly. And thanks to the self-adhesive film, you can completely transform the door leaf and make it pleasant to the eye. So, most people choose the pasting material under natural wood... Eventually inexpensive door acquires noble features and looks very presentable.

But it is worth noting that the film finish is used not only for budget door models, but also for metal structures... The question here is what goals are pursued by the owner of the home. For example, not everyone likes the graceful shine of iron, so people want to give doors a more traditional wooden view... There are even cases when the owner wants to mislead potential intruders by concealing that the structure is actually made of metal. By the way, the film is often used to protect the surface, since even the most durable metal doors exposed to adverse external factors... Therefore, if there is a large amount of rainfall in your region, then self-adhesive decoration of the entrance doors is more than justified - this way you will prevent metal corrosion.

Types of self-adhesive films

Self-adhesive films can have different color shades, texture and embossing

As a rule, products are produced in rolls, the width of which is 45, 67.5 or 90 centimeters. The length of the skein can also be different - 2, 8, 10 or 15 meters. As noted earlier, the product range is very wide. On sale there are both inexpensive monochromatic models and products with various textures and patterns. The industry even offers designer stickers from famous designers, but the cost of such products is quite high. In general, the following types of PVC films are used for door decoration:

  • Simple solid colors. They have a matte or glossy surface.
  • Metallized. These are durable films with a mirror surface, which are used to ensure information security of objects.
  • Decorative. They are used to imitate different types of wood, metal and even mosaics.
  • Fluorescent. Glow in low light and are often applied to glass doors.
  • Three-dimensional. Installed on interior doors.

Helpful Hint: Choose a film based on your installation target and personal preference. At the same time, you should not focus on the most budgetary models of little-known manufacturers, since their quality usually leaves much to be desired.

Required tools

Before moving on to pasting the door, you need to prepare the fixtures. For work you may need:

  • ruler, metal corner and measuring tape (marking);
  • pen or marker (outline strokes);
  • scissors or construction knife(film cutting);
  • rubber spatula (leveling the glued coating);
  • a spray bottle with water (adjusting the position of the self-adhesive);
  • hair dryer (processing corners and protrusions).

If the door leaf needs preparation, then you need to prepare an emery paper or sander, a plane, a primer and putty.

Surface preparation

Before pasting the door with foil, carefully clean the surface

For convenience, the door can be removed from the hinges. It is also advisable to dismantle the handles and the lock, if any.

Helpful Hint: If there is glass in the door, the pasting process will take a little longer. In this case, you need to remove the glazing beads and dismantle the fragile material.

The surface of the canvas should be as smooth as possible, because the applied film will repeat any, even the smallest, unevenness. If the structure was originally painted, and its surface began to crack over time, then it is worth thoroughly removing the layer of old paint. After that, the surface must be degreased. Take common remedy dishwashing, dilute it with water and wipe the cloth with a cloth soaked in the solution. Then wipe the surface with a dry cloth. If there are flaws on the door, then fix them with putty. If there are bulges, carefully remove them with a plane. Next, sand the door sandpaper until completely smooth and treat with acrylic primer.

Instructions for pasting the door with foil

Use a metal ruler and a building corner to make high-quality markings.

The surface is prepared, now we move on to the door cladding decorative item... The procedure is as follows:

  1. First, we do the markup. We determine the dimensions of the door using a tape measure and put on the sticker a contour corresponding to the size (taking into account the ends). The marking is done on the reverse side of the film, where, as a rule, there is a millimeter marking.
  2. At the second stage, we cut the material using a clerical knife. Cut very carefully and strictly along the lines drawn. The edges should be straight.
  3. Let's move on to pasting. We apply the upper edge of the cut film to the corresponding place on the door. Separate the protective paper 10 centimeters from the edge and firmly press the sticky part of the self-adhesive to door leaf, leading it to the upper end.
  4. Slowly separate the paper and gradually glue the film, moving from top to bottom. At the same time, smooth out the sticker with a rubber spatula or a soft cloth, expelling air bubbles.
  5. We wrap the film over the rest of the ends, cutting the corners to reduce overlap layers.
  6. Carefully cut off the extra centimeters around the edges and cut out a hole for the keyhole. We install the mechanism itself and the handle.

For good fixation of the film at the ends, dry the material with a hairdryer

Helpful Hint: Immediately before applying the film, apply to the surface soap solution using a spray bottle. This will allow you to easily move the decal until it is in the desired position. After that, drive out the water with a rubber spatula, and dry the protrusions and corners with a hairdryer so that the self-adhesive melts a little and presses well against the door.

Self-adhesive film is great stuff, allowing to improve the durability of the door and its appearance. Adhering to the tips and tricks described in this article, you can achieve the desired result in the shortest possible time.

All objects in the house sooner or later age, acquiring an unattractive appearance. But if the furniture can be easily replaced, and the wallpaper can be re-glued, then what to do with the doors? They are not so cheap to dismantle and buy new ones. Let's face it, given the costs of other things during the renovation, this part doesn't feel like messing around for a long time. To avoid this, you can decorate old doors with your own hands, which, thanks to a large number options often turns into an exciting experience.

1. Painting

The best way to freshen up an old door while slightly redesigning the room is to paint it a new color. In this case, you can use one or several shades, highlighting, for example, panel parts, moldings or a frame.

Depending on the size of the room, the door can be a bright detail or blend in with the wall decoration, thus not dividing the space. The latter option is suitable for small rooms. In such cases, give preference to light colors.

It is recommended to purchase acrylic paint, which does not leave odors, is evenly applied and does not harm your health, which is important for a bedroom or nursery. But first you need to prepare your "canvas": even a few layers of paint will not hide the unevenness of the old tree. In some cases, for this you will have to remove the doors in order to correct all the shortcomings as much as possible.

Since it is necessary to work with a wide area, the method of application plays great importance to create a neat final look. Divide the product mentally into several small areas, evenly painting over them with even horizontal or vertical stripes. When dealing with paneled doors, cover them in the following sequence: insertion points, center planks, sides.

After complete drying, you can cover the surface with a protective varnish so that the renewed door will last even longer.

Solid colors are suitable for many styles, not because of their neutrality, but due to the brevity, restraint and simplicity, which are relevant in modern design interiors. You can follow the fashion without large investments or experienced craftsmen.

2. Drawings and stickers

If monotonous decor is not your option, feel free to take a brush in your hands and paint your boring old door with interesting subjects. People with art education can use it as a canvas, decorating with still lifes, landscapes, cartoon characters. For the rest, there are stencils or vinyl stickers- no less effective tools that will also provide a beautiful result.

In the case of stencils, the principle of operation is the same as in the first paragraph: we prepare the product, apply paint, wait for it to dry. A painted or "bare", pre-treated surface can be used as a base. Drawings on the texture of old wood look spectacular.

3. Decoupage

This is an amazing method that, with all the simplicity of materials and ease of application, allows you to create real works of art. Decoupage is ideal for creating and decorating Provence style doors. Especially when combined with a cracking varnish, which helps to visually age objects. Floral ornaments made in this way look very sophisticated and natural, allowing you to doubt the "home" origin of the decor.

So, you will need: PVA glue, napkins, a sponge, scissors for cutting out the necessary details of the picture. On a surface previously cleaned of dust and dirt, paper is applied, after which glue is applied to it. To avoid the appearance of wrinkles or bubbles, you can smooth the picture with a sponge by removing excess liquid.

After the door has dried, and you will have to wait about a day, the drawing must be fixed with the usual furniture varnish... Almost any material can be decorated in this way, but it is with wood that it goes best.

4. Wallpaper

It can be a shame when after the repair there are several meters of unused wallpaper. Don't throw them away - better leave them for decorating old doors! This is a completely inexpensive solution that will refresh the interior and hide the flaws of the product.

They can cover the entire area or individual details - it all depends on the image, as well as the design of the room. Some types of wallpaper have a relief structure, making the decor richer and more varied.

For the nursery or bright interior you can take a photo wallpaper with landscapes, paintings or other doors. Small games with perspective will visually increase the space. Only the rest of its elements should at the same time balance the composition, being a neutral background.

5. Fabric

For the decoration of old doors, you can take the remnants of fabric, especially if they were used for upholstering furniture. Such an intersection of drawings will look appropriate in one interior.

Either way, the fabric is a textured, eye-catching solution that's sure to help refresh old item, covering small flaws. You can fix it to the door using ordinary glue or furniture clips. The second option is good because over time the boring part can be removed.

Lace is popular not only in clothing but also in decor. Here, with their help, you can emphasize the refined taste of the owners by decorating the door with them.

6. Leather

The leather-trimmed door is certainly a sign of the owners' status. It will fit more into the office space than the nursery, but because of this it becomes no less interesting as an option for decor.

According to the rules, of course, such products must be ordered in salons, always from natural materials. But for a less solid interior, a substitute is quite suitable, since it can be chosen in all possible color combinations.

For the leather you need rivets that will help it to "wrap" the door beautifully and lock. Plus, it can give the design an industrial touch that perfectly matches the loft style.

Thin leather carving or drawing will look luxurious. Another one original idea: a door trimmed with old belts, but for this you will have to visit more than one flea market.

7. Mosaic

Mosaic compositions will never lose their relevance: they are beautiful, unusual and interesting to implement. It looks a bit like a puzzle, only you make up the picture yourself.

You can use ceramic, glass or acrylic parts. Make sure that all the colors for the future "picture" are enough. These can be realistic plots, surrealism, or randomly placed elements that are fixed with ordinary glue.

You can decorate the facade, panel or doorway. Check the reliability of the product so that when the doors are suddenly closed, some part does not suddenly fall off.

8. Aging

For some styles, having elements that are literally steeped in history is the main condition. But here it is worth distinguishing between "shabby" and "luxurious" old age. We need a second view, and we will have to work on creating it.

There are many ways to artificially age furniture. Some of them are professional and not feasible under normal conditions. Others are simple tricks that successfully mimic cracked paint.

For door decoration, you can use craquelure varnish, which literally makes the paint crack. Do not forget that it is better to work with multiple layers - to give greater depth drawings.

A dry brush also copes with its mission, which fluently paints the surface, giving it a worn look.

Several layers of paint can be rubbed with sandpaper, revealing the multi-layered coating. And if in some places you rub with a wax candle, paint the door and rub, then the paint will drop off locally, also creating the necessary effect.

9. Stained glass

Multicolored stained-glass windows in temples, smoothly letting in light, always delight the audience. Why not try to create a faint but semblance of this beauty in your home while decorating old doors at the same time?

For this method are used glass inserts... And here you have two options: buy a finished product with a picture or decorate it yourself. The latter, of course, is more interesting, but it can be done after some preparation.

In addition to acrylic paints, with the help of which the drawing is applied, you will need a special contour that creates the illusion of a metal frame. The glass sheet should be in a horizontal position so that the paint does not drip over the slippery surface without having time to grab. Ready product must be installed in the panel and fixed with glazing beads.

10. Molding

Moldings will also help to decorate old doors - elements that imitate stucco molding, which is so relevant in a classic interior or art deco style.

Parts are usually made of foam or polyurethane, and therefore cheap, but allow you to create really luxury designs... You can buy ready-made components, fix them on the door using liquid nails or glue.

Usually, door decor with moldings is not very diverse, but sometimes it turns out to stumble upon aesthetic models. They can be painted in overlapping or contrasting colors to achieve different effects.
