Recommendations for the cultivation of viburnum buldenezh. Recommendations for growing viburnum buldenezh Buldenezh propagation by green summer cuttings

Kalina buldenezh (bulldonezhskaya) is an ornamental shrub, characterized by large spherical white inflorescences. The origin of the name is French: “Boule de Neige” means “a ball of snow”.

Another name for the shrub is also known - sterile viburnum (Viburnum opulus). Her flowers are sterile, there are no stamens and pistils, she does not have fruits. It is planted only for decorative purposes.

It is also distinguished by its special frost resistance. Even frosts down to -30 ° C are tolerated by an adult plant normally. Buldenezh is grown in central Russia, beyond the Urals, in Siberia.

Buldenezhskaya viburnum belongs to the honeysuckle family. The branches grow in different directions and form a spreading crown. If they are not cut off, then the diameter of the bush can be 1.5-2 m.

At favorable conditions an ornamental bush grows quickly, shoots add up to 40 cm per year, in three years it grows up to one and a half meters in height. Then the growth slows down a little, but if it is not limited, then in 10 years this shrub can be 3.5 m high.

Buldenezh blooms for 3-4 weeks, in late May and early June. In good weather conditions, flowering can last more than a month, 40 days. At first, the flowers bloom green, then gradually acquire a creamy hue, only when fully opened, they become snow-white.

White balls can be from 8-10 cm to 15-20 cm in diameter, depending on the location and age of the bush. During flowering, such a viburnum turns into a decoration of the site. The peculiarity of "snowballs" is odorless flowers.

Origin story

The French breeder Victor Lemoine is considered the creator of the culture. When a beautiful plant was brought to Russia, only royal gardens and parks were decorated with it, so it was recognized as aristocratic.

About Kalina Buldenezh according to reviews

According to gardeners, it is not difficult to grow Kalina Buldenezh. In order for the bush to please with flowering, it is important to choose the right place. It won't bloom in the shade, it's still better to choose sunny place, ideally - partial shade.

Trimming is fine. It is better to cut the bushes after flowering, because flower buds are laid in the fall.

Particular attention should be paid to preventive treatment for aphids.

In early spring, it is worth carefully examining the shoots, usually on their tips one can identify the "clutches" of the viburnum leaf beetle (dark tubercles). They need to be removed, trimmed and burned.

There are very few negative points in the reviews:

  1. Pest control must be carried out on time, it is important not to miss the moment, otherwise the plant may die.
  2. It can be a little hassle to pick up the crumbling petals and flowers when they fade.

V landscape design they actively use Kalina Buldenezh because of the good tolerance of pruning and ease of modeling. During flowering, the bush is always in the spotlight, and then it can serve as a green background for other plants in the composition. Planted as a hedge, as a curb shrub, as a separate bush or tree.

Flowers are appreciated by bulldogs and florists. Snow-white balls look beautiful in a bouquet. They can stand in water fresh for more than a week, they can be easily combined with other flowers.

Just a little effort is worth making and all efforts will pay off during the beautiful flowering of white balls, reminiscent of a snowy winter in summer.

Reproduction methods and features

Buldenezh is propagated vegetatively: by cuttings, branches or by dividing the roots of the bush.

Reproduction by branches is considered the most in a simple way... On the bush they choose annual shoots, dig long grooves about 10 cm deep in the ground from the side of their growth.

Then you need to carefully, without breaking, bend the shoots to the ground, place each in the groove prepared for it, fix it with metal brackets or hooks. Sprinkle over and sprinkle with earth.

An important condition for the early appearance of roots is the constant abundant watering of the branches.

Propagation by cuttings

You need to cut off young shoots with several buds. Put them for 8-10 hours in a stimulating solution that accelerates the formation of roots, for example, Kornevin.

In the meantime, prepare a place for planting shoots, water and fertilize the soil. Dig in the cuttings aged in the solution. Cover them with a plastic bottle cap or glass jar for the formation of the greenhouse effect. Water in moderation. By the end of summer, they will already have young shoots.

Division of roots

In late autumn, viburnum can be planted by dividing the roots. This is the most quick way reproduction, although the most painful for the plant, because the roots are injured.

It is better to propagate this way in the fall because there is time until spring for adaptation. You can easily separate the roots from a bush that has many branches growing from the roots.

You need to find a young lateral process, dig it out with a shovel, chop off part of the root, separating it from the bush. Then plant the seedling in a prepared planting hole and water abundantly.

Planting: time, place, soil, process features

The time of planting viburnum buldenezh depends on how the bush reproduces. If an adult bush is divided, then the seedlings can be planted in the fall. But cuttings and layering are planted in spring and summer.

For this shrub, you need to find a place in partial shade, in the bright sun it will not bloom for long, there is a risk that the flowers will be burnt. And in the shade, the inflorescences may not bloom at all or the inflorescences develop poorly: they will be weak and small. In addition, pests can overpower the plant in the shade. A place where there is shade in the morning and the sun in the afternoon is ideal.

Viburnum grows well on the shore of the reservoir. On the site there is a good place for her - near a well or a column, at downpipe, there are more chances that she will have enough moisture.

The choice of the place must be approached responsibly, taking into account the fact that the buldenezh is a long-liver, it grows and blooms for 50-60 years. It will be difficult to transplant an adult bush.

Kalina needs a nutritious, loose, not sour soil. If the soil is clayey, it must be lightened with sand, peat, humus.

A hole 50x50 cm in size is enough for a young seedling, if necessary, you can dig a hole and more - 60x80 cm, 60 cm deep. Drainage is laid at the bottom, usually this broken brick or crushed stone, which is covered with a layer of sand.

Then add a layer of soil (soil mixed with compost, ash and peat). It would be appropriate to fertilize the soil with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers (Agronan, Agricol, nitroammofosk, diammofosk, AVA are suitable). The seedling is lowered into the planting hole so that the root collar is 5 cm deep. Then you need to fill it with soil, compact, water and mulch, for example, with peat.

If you plan to plant several viburnum bushes, then the distance between them should be 1.5-2 m.

Care features

Caring for viburnum buldenezh consists in watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest control.

Watering

Kalina for good growth and development needs moisture. Therefore, you need to ensure regular abundant watering. In a dry summer, watering should be done two to three times a week, quite abundantly: an adult big bush you may need two buckets of water (20 l).

Top dressing

Viburnum is fertilized twice a year: in spring and autumn.

In the spring, nitroammofoska is introduced (for 1 m 2 - 40-50 g). You can also add an infusion of chicken manure, fermented herbal infusion, compost.

In autumn - potassium nitrate and superphosphate (potassium - 15-20 g per 1 m 2, phosphorus - 30-40 g). You can add wood ash, humus under the bush.

In early spring, to prevent the appearance of various pests, Kalina Buldenezh is treated with chemicals (Karbofos, Fufanon, etc.).

To avoid infection powdery mildew or when gray leaf spot appears in spring, the bush is sprayed with Bordeaux liquid. If the lesions of fungal diseases are large, the plant cannot be restored, it is better to remove it from the site.

Aphids and scale insects can be fought folk methods eg spray with soapy water or wood ash. But they only help with small lesions. In case of a serious threat, it is better to use special chemistry. From store-bought preparations INTA-VIR, Iskra work well.

Infusions of garlic and onions are effective against the viburnum leaf beetle. Cope with it and infusion of wormwood with soap. In specialized garden stores you can pick up chemicals(Fitoverm, Aktelik, Aktara).

Pruning

Pruning is carried out in late autumn (you can partially in early spring), cut off dry branches and shoots that are too long, forming a bush of the desired size. Depending on the desired composition, you can grow a standard tree or a single bush.

If you want to get a tree, not a bush, then you need to leave only one trunk, cut off the other stems at the base. In this case, it is necessary to allow branching only of the upper part, forming the crown of the tree, cut off the lateral lower shoots.

Preparing for winter

Kalina Buldenezh is famous for its winter hardiness. Branches do not need special shelter for the winter; usually this culture tolerates cold well. When severe frosts in winter, viburnum branches can freeze. But with healthy roots, the plant will recover in spring.

Particular attention should be paid only to young seedlings. In order for them to endure the winter well, it is necessary to mulch for the first few years. trunk circle for the winter.

It is sprinkled with needles, sawdust, humus or old leaves. The last year's layer of mulch needs to be dug up and a fresh layer added. If it grows around the bush lawn grass, then you can not cut it off for the winter. It will be additional protection roots from frost.

Kalina Buldenezh is an amazing plant in terms of beauty. Magnificent snow-white balls, strewn all over the bush, can hardly leave anyone indifferent. If you are not yet growing a beautiful shrub, then it's time to plant one in your garden. Read on to learn how to plant Buldenezh viburnum correctly in spring and autumn.

General description of the shrub

The charming name of viburnum has French roots - Boule de Neige translates as “ snowball". And this is exactly the case when the name fully characterizes appearance... The plant is valued not only because of the flowers, but also because of beautiful leaves... Due to its beauty and sophistication, the plant is often used in landscape design and in ordinary summer cottages.

The average height of the shrub is from two to three or three and a half meters. Flowers can grow up to fifteen centimeters in diameter. At correct cultivation, regular and systematic care, the shrub is able to live up to fifty years.

The flowering period of viburnum - from late spring to early summer, blooms most often within two to three weeks. Due to the abundance of large snow globes the branches become heavier, so in some cases they need to be propped up so that they do not break.

Interesting feature plants - flowers are odorless.

Planting and replanting Kalina Buldenezh can be either next to other crops or in splendid isolation. In both the first and second versions, it will look interesting.

How to propagate viburnum Buldenezh

For those who are already growing a plant on their site, but want to increase the number of shrubs, it is important to know the methods of reproduction. One of the features of this plant is that the flowers decorative viburnum are sterile, therefore only vegetative reproduction is possible.

It can be propagated in three ways:

By dividing the bush

Propagation of viburnum Buldenezh by dividing the bush should be as careful as possible so as not to injure the root system. To plant Buldenezh, it is necessary to partially dig out the roots and delicately separate the young daughter shoot from the mother bush. This must be done so that both the first and second parts of the shrub normally hold the branches and roots.

Layers

The sprinkling method is very simple and in a convenient way. Optimal timing the event is held in late spring-early summer.

Reproduction by layering takes place according to the following scheme:

  • Under the bush, you need to make small in depth (up to ten centimeters), but long grooves.
  • Then side shoots annual shrubs are lowered to the ground and placed in these grooves.
  • The branches should be secured with hooks or staples.

  • After that, you need to fill the bends with compost, lightly tamp and Moisten thoroughly with water of normal temperature. In the future, watering should be carried out in a timely manner.
  • When shoots form, hilling should be carried out to create a normal moisture level.
  • Separation from the main bush is carried out in the fall at the formation of roots, the bends are cut off with a sharp pruner. Then the young plant is dug up and transplanted into a container with soil. Transplant to a permanent place should be done when root system will get stronger (as a rule, it takes about two years).

By cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is considered a longer and more painstaking task. Despite the fact that the formation of roots takes a long time, and the process of survival sometimes ends in failure, this method is practiced. Performed in summer period when pruning. Suitable material for reproduction - young shoots with a pair of live, healthy buds.

The event is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  • First of all, you should carefully cut off young shoots, it is necessary to leave one node with buds, and remove the rest of the foliage.
  • Then the shoots need to be placed for ten hours in a solution that activates root formation, for example, you can use the drug "Kornevin".
  • While the cuttings are in solution, planting beds should be made. For the beds, you need to make a suitable substrate: turf soil, humus, sand (the components must be in the same ratio).
  • Planting is carried out in a moist substrate. The cuttings are rooted to a depth of about two or two and a half centimeters.
  • After that, you should make a greenhouse: carefully cover plastic bottle or film.
  • Next, you need to regularly moisten the soil.

Planting viburnum Buldenezh in open ground

Any summer cottage event requires responsibility and correctness of action. Planting this shrub is no exception. At the same time, having spent quite a bit of effort on rooting a bush seedling, in the future you will get an amazing and original plant with beautiful flowering. The photo below proves that decorative viburnum can turn any site into fabulous place:

When is it better to plant: timing

Many novice flower growers think about when it is right to plant Buldenezh viburnum - in spring or autumn? The timing of the event depends on the breeding method. If you plan to plant by dividing the bush, then it is better to plant in the fall, but if by layering, then it is better to do it in the spring. Moreover, in the fall, the event should be performed before severe cold weather and rains, otherwise there is a risk that the plant will not take root.

Optimal garden space and suitable planting soil

Choosing the right location plays an important role in successful rooting and growing. Therefore, when choosing where to plant Buldenezh viburnum, it should be remembered that direct rays can be destructive, and in a strong shade the plant is unlikely to please you with a beautiful flowering. Such a viburnum grows well in an area with partial shade.

The soil should be loose, moist, fertile, with good drainage properties. Kalina Buldenezh loves moisture, so places near water bodies, in lowlands, are suitable for her. But stagnation of moisture is also undesirable. You can choose dry places, but then watering should be done often and generously.

Planting pit preparation

Before planting, you need to dig a planting hole. Its depth should be at least sixty centimeters, and its diameter should be about 60-70 centimeters.

If rooting is planned on heavy soil, then a drainage layer should be laid on the bottom of the pit, which will avoid stagnant moisture. To do this, fill it with rubble and sand.

Direct landing

Planting viburnum Buldenezh is carried out according to the following scheme:

  • When rooting planting material the root collar should be three to four centimeters below the soil surface.
  • After planting, you need to lightly compact the soil.
  • Then water the planting site generously.
  • After that, cover with mulching material - peat or humus. Mulch will help support optimal humidity and temperature.

How to care for viburnum Buldenezh after landing

The snow-white bush is unpretentious plant... But despite this fact, it still follows after planting in open ground and subsequently does not bypass the shrub with timely and high-quality care. It is necessary to regularly water, fertilize, cut, treat against pests and diseases. Compliance with the basic elements of care will help to successfully grow Kalina Buldenezh. Let's consider in more detail how to properly care for ornamental shrub:

Watering

As mentioned earlier, the ornamental shrub is moisture-loving. It is important to irrigate on time and systematically. Young specimens especially need this. In summer and dry heat, the importance of watering increases many times over.

And generous watering in the fall before the onset of cold weather will help the plant to overwinter normally and withstand bad weather. Also, before the cold weather, it is important to cover the trunks with humus. If the cold attacked the plant, then with proper care it can recover quickly.

Pruning

Experienced florists it is advised to shorten the shoots of the plant by 1/3 when planting. In the spring, before flowering, all frozen, damaged, dry and weak shoots should be eliminated. But after flowering, it is necessary to thin out the center of the crown and reduce the side shoots. Adult plant must have no more than eight skeletal branches. In the end summer season pruning is not carried out, since the plant must gain strength before the winter period.

Pruning viburnum Buldenezh is essential element ornamental shrub care. The procedure is important to maintain beautiful shape and to prevent the reproduction of pests (strong thickening can provoke this).

Top dressing

Top dressing allows you to achieve a luxurious and beautiful flowering. It is held in the second year after planting. In the spring, you can feed the decorative viburnum with minerals, organic fertilizers(for example, humus, ash, rotted compost). In the fall, you can apply potassium-phosphorus fertilizing.

Treatment

Ornamental viburnum Buldenezh can overtake a variety of diseases and pests. To prevent the harmful influence of unwanted "guests" of the garden, you should properly care for the shrub.

The following plant pests are distinguished:

  • Scabbard - insect small size sucking the sap of the plant visually looks like a small tubercle. You can fight such a pest with the help of the drug "Aktara".

  • The viburnum leaf beetle is an extremely unpleasant pest that can eat large quantities of foliage, thereby causing its death. The bug has a shiny color. Against the viburnum leaf beetle, drugs "Fufanon", "Karbofos", "Fosbecid" are used.

  • Aphids are another equally unpleasant pest that can harm shrubs. Used against aphids wood ash, drugs "Agravertin", "Aktara", "Inta-vir".

As for the diseases of the viburnum Buldenezh, the plant can be affected by powdery mildew. To prevent the disease, the shrub should be treated with infusion of onions, garlic, ash, tobacco.

Why a shrub may not bloom: reasons

Situations are also possible when the viburnum Buldenezh does not bloom. Why is this happening? There may be several reasons for the lack of flowering:

  • lack of regular watering;
  • growing in direct sunlight or strong shade;
  • lack of dressing for a long time;
  • invasion of pests, disease.

As you can see, viburnum may not bloom due to improper or inadequate care. If you correct this situation, then it will certainly delight you with a magnificent color.

Seeing in the spring a snow-white cloud on the ground, you should not be surprised - it blooms and rejoices in the arrival of heat viburnum buldenezh. Planting and caring for such a beautiful plant are simple and will not take much time and effort. Any gardener, even a beginner, can plant and grow this decorative variety viburnum. In the article, we will tell you in detail about the features of planting and reproduction of viburnum buldenezh, as well as caring for it.

What does viburnum buldenezh look like?

The shrub has highly branched branches. Gardeners, pruning them, give the plant a semicircle shape. From this, the blossoming buds become even more beautiful and tender. Inflorescences in the form of a ball and on a dwarf tree look great.

The leaves of such a garden viburnum are large and bright, jagged, and the veins create an interesting pattern. All shoots are covered with them. Looking at the plant, it seems that it is standing in a festive green outfit.

Ball-shaped inflorescences form on young branches. The diameter of each is 15 cm. Several petals emerge from one bud. There are no stamens in them. Therefore, the plant does not bear fruit.

By winter, the leaves fall off, but the viburnum looks impressive even without them, since the relief is created artificially.

Blooming buds have a light green hue, then they become creamy and pinkish. Having opened, they become a snow-white lump. Because of huge number inflorescences shoots tilt down. Such beauty can be observed for more than a month - up to 35 days, flowering begins in May or June.

Both individual bushes, whole plantings of them, and standard trees look great.

What varieties are there

Fruit varieties of viburnum are presented in wide range... And Buldenezh has several subspecies. All of them have high decorative qualities.

Includes viburnum Buldenezh following popular varieties:

  • Ordinary. It is considered a sterile form of the common red viburnum. Has a shape that allows you to create interesting compositions. Thanks to this, the common viburnum Buldenezh has gained considerable popularity among summer residents, gardeners and landscape designers.
  • Decorative. It differs from the ordinary one in more compact size.
  • Roseum. Viburnum Buldenezh Roseum is characterized by terry inflorescences of an unusual shape. Blooming viburnum at first it has white buds with a green tint, and towards the end they acquire a pale pink tint. The shrub grows over 3 meters. Usually it is used in standard plantings.

Kalina Buldenezh: reproduction

For him, rooted layers and cuttings, both green and lignified, are used. Buldenezh easily reproduces by division. To do this, the dug out bush is divided into parts so that each one has roots and shoots. The resulting plants are planted.

How to propagate Kalina Buldenezh by layering

Reproduction by branches. Simple enough and easy way reproduction of decorative viburnum - sprinkling of branches. In the process of work, you will need:

  • Dig long shallow grooves (up to 10 cm deep).
  • Bend the one-year bends to ground level, place them in the prepared grooves.
  • Fix them in the grooves with metal hooks.
  • Sprinkle gently with earth (compost), pour abundantly with rainwater.
  • Rooted shoots are transplanted into special containers for further germination.

Important! In order for roots to appear on the branches faster, they need to be constantly watered.

How to propagate viburnum buldenezh by cuttings

Cutting is a rather long and laborious method. This breeding method is carried out in the summer, during the pruning of the bush. For reproduction, green young shoots with several pairs of buds are used.

Stages of work:

  • Young shoots are carefully cut, leaving one internode, the rest of the leaves are removed.
  • The cuttings are placed in a stimulating solution (for example, Kornevin), which accelerates root growth, for about 8-10 hours.
  • Prepare the beds for planting. For the soil, a mixture of sod land, sand and humus (1: 1: 1) is used. The soil must be well moistened.
  • Cuttings treated with a stimulant are immersed in the ground by about 2-2.5 cm.

Fresh articles about garden and vegetable garden

After planting them, it is necessary to provide the cuttings optimal conditions for growth and create a mini-greenhouse, for example, cover with a film, a transparent bag or a plastic bottle, creating a greenhouse effect for them. The soil should be constantly moistened; it is recommended to periodically spray the cuttings. By the end of summer, cuttings should give young shoots.

Watering viburnum buldenezh

Kalina loves moisture very much. Young plants consume a large number of water, they need to be watered more often. Both young growth and adult bushes require special attention during dry periods. The soil around the trunk should not dry out, so water more often if there is no rainfall. In rainy weather, the plant has enough natural precipitation. In the summer heat, water several times a month to avoid shortening the flowering period in the spring.

Top dressing and fertilization of viburnum buldenezh

Since the plant is planted in well-fertilized soil, the first feeding is carried out the next year. In the spring, when the first leaves appear for good development carry out feeding with nitrogen compounds. You can add organic matter - 2 buckets of humus under the bush. The second time they are fed with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers in the fall. You can use both liquid and dry dressings. Granular fertilizers are spread over the loosened soil under the bushes. After applying dressings in the spring, abundant watering is needed.

To cut or not to cut Kalina Buldenezh

A similar question is asked by many of those who have viburnum buldenezh growing on their site. Planting and leaving, shelter for the winter - all these are mandatory and understandable procedures, but few know why pruning is needed. In fact, in order for this decorative viburnum to form a lush and beautifully shaped crown, it must be cut off annually, but just remember about some of the features of the plant. Formative pruning can only be carried out after the plant has faded by shortening the side shoots, cutting out dried branches and thinning the middle of the bush. At the very end of summer, you should not cut the plant, since at this time it prepares for the onset of cold weather. To improve flowering, young branches of the buldenezh are pinched in late July - early August. It is important to remember that this variety of viburnum lays buds and blooms only on the shoots of the last year, and that is why you should not touch them.

Pests and diseases of viburnum buldenezh

Kalina Buldenezh is loved not only by gardeners. Insect pests do not ignore it either. Viburnum leaf beetle and black viburnum aphid are especially rampant. Insects begin their harmful activity in early spring, so it is impossible to be late with plant protection. An effective method is treatment with drugs such as Iskra and Inta-vir.

Fresh articles about garden and vegetable garden

Both karbofos and chlorophos will do. It will require three treatments at intervals of 12 days. For those who do not let "chemistry" into their garden, there is a safe preparation Healthy Garden. The frequency of processing it with viburnum is the same. You can use folk remedies: infusions of garlic, hot pepper, yarrow, wormwood. They will also help with the defeat of viburnum with spotting or powdery mildew. It is very useful to lure entomophagous insects that fight pests into the garden. For this, spicy-aromatic herbs are sown near the bushes.

Kalina Buldenezh quickly adapts to any conditions and tolerates severe winters and vagaries of weather in an unstable climate middle lane... Caring for an ornamental shrub will not take much of your time and effort. In return, viburnum will decorate the garden with incredibly lush "snowballs".

It is noticed that each ornamental wild plant looks best in the environment in which it grows in its natural environment, in wildlife... Ampel stems most of all go to vertical surfaces, growing among stones and slopes, succulents are charming on sandy open areas, and viburnum most of all to face the shores of reservoirs. It is not for nothing that the Kalinov Bridge is mentioned in folk tales! Plant her on the shore artificial pond or near a well, or water more often - and that's almost all she needs!

It is interesting! In Russia Buldenezh (translated from French - snowball) came to the court of Empress Catherine II. For a long time it was grown exclusively in the royal greenhouses and open parks. Later, wealthy townspeople began to plant entire gardens with this crop. Thanks to this, the viburnum Buldenezh received the fame of an aristocratic plant.

Variety of viburnum Buldenezh belongs to the honeysuckle family and is the result of the selection of the common viburnum. Elastic shoots grow up and to the sides, forming a sprawling spherical crown up to 3.5 m high.If you give the bush the freedom to grow in breadth, its diameter can reach 1.5 m or more, but it will become shapeless, while the recommended pruning turns it into a beautiful semi-dome, strewn with white round flowers... Flowering begins in May with favorable weather and often lasts until July.

The dense green crown makes the plant a decoration of the garden even outside the flowering period. The leaves are brightly colored front side and paler from the inside out. At this time, Buldenezh is no different from a wild plant. It is a deciduous shrub, but, even after dropping all the foliage, it does not lose its decorative effect due to its unusual skeletal shape against the background of white snow.

The standard form Buldenezh looks very impressive, which turns the bush into a pretty dwarf tree, completely covered with quivering white balls-inflorescences.

Reproduction

The flowers, which are the main advantage of this bush, are formed at the ends of young shoots and are a lot of buds collected in a ball with semicircular petals. There are no stamens and pistils inside them - the flowers of this "snow queen" are absolutely sterile.

For this reason, the reproduction of this variety is carried out by cuttings, layering, grafting, dividing the bush. This can be done as usual in spring or autumn, but the spring method is preferable from the point of view of adaptation, since this plant is not as resistant to frost as its wild relative.

Reproduction by layering

In the spring, young strong shoots are selected, growing low above the ground. They dig up the soil under it, fertilize it, then tilt the shoot, dig it to a depth of 10-15 cm and fix it with wooden pins, metal bracket or a load in this position. The earth needs to be compacted and periodically well moistened until the cuttings take root. A full-fledged root system will develop in him only by the fall, and then it will already be possible to separate it from the mother bush. But transplanting to a new place is possible only in the second, and even better - in the third year.

Propagation by cuttings

A rather laborious method in which young seedlings can be obtained the next year. Cuttings are taken during spring pruning... Suitable for planting are young (last year's) not quite lignified shoots, on which there is at least one internode. Leaves are removed from them and sharp knife the ends are cut, leaving a length of 8-9 cm.

A greenhouse with moistened soil mixed with humus and sand is prepared for planting. Finished cuttings are buried 3-5 cm, covered with foil or glass on top. It is necessary to maintain high humidity by periodically opening and spraying. After they give roots, you can transplant into pots, which are kept warm until late autumn. Place them in a cool place for the winter.

Plant in a permanent place in spring in well-warmed soil.

If you plant two rooted cuttings in one hole at once, you can get a more lush decorative group planting.

Reproduction by dividing the bush

A simple and fast way that does not present any difficulties. It is necessary to find a suitable young (preferably not older than last year) shoot, which is separated from the mother plant with a sharp shovel and transplanted into a previously prepared moist and fertilized hole.

Landing

It is carried out mainly in the spring and obeys practically the same rules, regardless of the way in which the seedlings were grown.

Seat selection

The main condition for the successful development of viburnum is sufficient watering, therefore, it is better to choose a place that is well moistened, she loves moist, rich loams. Good choice, as already mentioned, are the shores of natural and decorative reservoirs, wells, small local depressions (but not lowlands). However, garden varieties of viburnum feel good on dry soils, if they are provided with high-quality regular watering.

And yet, in this case, the "snowballs" become smaller, in addition, the dryness of the soil provokes an invasion of leaf-gnawing pests, which the weakened plant cannot resist. A significant role is played by evaporation from water, which the plant is deprived of in a dry place.

Lighting

In terms of illumination, light partial shade is preferable. Fully open space, especially in dry and hot areas, is undesirable, since this often leads to a loss of decorativeness of the leaves, and sometimes to the death of the plant when wrong mode glaze. However, a completely open area is better than a thickened one in the shade.

Soil preparation

The optimal size of the planting pit is 80 cm deep and 50-60 cm in diameter. This will provide the conditions for a strong root system for this plant. Despite the plant's love for moisture, with clay soils a drainage layer (bark, broken brick, crushed stone, sand, etc.) should be laid on the bottom of the pit. Then a prepared mixture of 3-4 buckets of compost is added, 2 tbsp. wood ash and 1 tbsp. nitrophosphate. The next layer is top dressing - it can be a complex mixture with the presence of phosphorus and potassium. You can use a mixture of leafy soil, peat and humus.

Landing

The seedling is transferred along with a wet earthy clod, carefully covered with earth and lightly compacted so as not to damage the roots. The near-trunk circle is formed with a decrease towards the center. Water liberally and immediately mulch the soil around the bush to maintain moisture and warmth. Good for mulch sawdust, bark conifers, peat chips, fallen leaves (only from healthy deciduous crops!), cut grass.

It is necessary to ensure that after the soil has settled, the root collar does not end up too deep in the ground! Usually it is enough to leave 3-4 cm for shrinkage.

Care

Agrotechnics of viburnum Buldenezh is standard, including watering, pruning, pest control and, optionally, fertilizing.

Watering

This is the main condition for successful growth and beautiful flowering, especially in hot summers. Watering is required with such a frequency that the earthy clod does not dry out, always remaining in a moist state. Young seedlings need more moisture, they need to be watered more often. Do not forget about watering in the fall, periodically moistening the soil abundantly in order to prevent its dehydration, especially during the period of snowless frosts.

Top dressing

Fertilization after planting is not necessary, but the plant is responsive to organics, mineral complexes, etc., more luxuriant and blooms longer, It has healthy look... Potassium and phosphorus can be reintroduced in mid-August.

Pruning

This culture tolerates this procedure calmly. Having chosen the shape of the future bush, you can start pruning from the first year of cultivation. What's more, pruning branches 1/3 of the length when planting will help it settle down faster. Subsequently, during the procedure, dried branches and excess young shoots are removed. It is recommended to leave the main skeletal branches near the viburnum one per year. Thus, a 10-year-old specimen will have 8 or 9 of them.

V cold winter the bush may freeze slightly, you should let him come to his senses. In most cases, it will recover completely afterwards.

How to give Kalina Buldenezh an interesting shape?

Using various pruning techniques, you can give the bush interesting, spectacular shapes.

Stamper

It is not difficult to form a stem. To do this, you need to leave a single trunk and pinch all the other shoots growing from the root. In subsequent years, all young shoots should be cut off, and upon reaching the trunk of 1.5-2 m in height, begin to form a crown with the help of pinching and pruning. Old branches need to be cut annually, thinning the tree from the middle.

Multi-barreled

To obtain several trunks, a young bush in the first season is cut almost to the base before flowering, leaving a stump no more than 20 cm in height. This stimulates the development of many lateral shoots. In subsequent seasons, pruning should be done after flowering (July-August).

Pests

The main enemy of the viburnum is the garden aphid, which is capable of destroying all its foliage in a short period of time. Recommended folk remedies struggle - soap solution in the form of spraying or wood ash, which must be sprinkled with a thick layer of the trunk circle with the capture of the nearest territory. In advanced cases, insecticides are used (Aktara, Tanrek, Aktellik, Agravertin).

Also, this culture is often affected by scale insects, viburnum leaf beetle and many caterpillars. Most effective means- Actellik, Ascoris, Karbofos, Fosbecid.

Use in landscape design

Viburnum Buldenezh will grow in your garden for many years, so it is important to immediately determine its role in the landscape of the site. The plant looks great in single plantings, but goes well with barberry, mountain ash, hawthorn. When landscaping large areas, it is customary to place in groups of 3 or 5 bushes. Planting it in the background will perfectly complete the composition using creeping junipers, Japanese spirea, paniculate and tree hydrangea, ground cover perennials.

In general, the plant is considered capricious for cultivation, but many are ready to take care of the “snow queen” for showiness and beauty and forgive her her weaknesses and whims.

There are two main ways to reproduce viburnum "buldenezh": seed and vegetative. At the same time, gardeners should be aware that the buldenezh viburnum, which is reproduced by sowing seeds, does not inherit all the qualities of its variety. It is best to choose a vegetative method that is to a greater extent possible for realization in your own garden. To do this, you need to spud the shoots, separate the bushes with special layering of the horizontal and vertical type. Kalina "buldenezh" also tolerates well. Uterine bushes are subjected to hilling every 2-10 years in autumn and spring time. It is required to huddle the soil near the bush up to eight centimeters. The next summer usually three to six young shoots sprout. Subsequent hilling should be carried out after they grow up to about twenty to twenty-five centimeters.

A mound of sand after hilling requires constant moisture. If the care turns out to be effective, the shoots will "acquire" a strong root system by the autumn season. They must be disconnected from the bush, and then planted on a certain land plot where the new plant will develop further. Kalina "buldenezh", the reproduction of which is quite simple to produce, may be subject to other effective method... it is quite possible with the help of lignified cuttings, which will be kept in water for three or five days, after which they should be planted in a cool place under the shelter of the cuttings. The latter has a certain composition, it includes humus and sand (in equal amounts). The cuttings require hydration, which can be provided with a special humidifier.

For viburnum "buldenezh" reproduction using this method is quite acceptable due to its simplicity and availability. After about thirty days, you can observe the rooting of cuttings, by the first month of autumn, the seedlings will already rise high enough above the ground, and they can be transplanted. The advantage of this method is the absence of a hot period during the rooting of the plant, which occurs in the first or second month of spring, so there is no need to create an artificial shade.

More difficult way for viburnum "buldenezh" - propagation with the help of green cuttings, since in this case additional stimulation of the growth of the root system is required. As a rule, the period of strengthening the root in the ground falls just on the hot and dry summer period, which does not always have a beneficial effect on the result. Usually, under such unfavorable conditions, cuttings grow poorly, so the growth period is lengthened by as much as three months. At the same time, you can try to grow and root up to five green cuttings using the usual flower pot under a jar (glass) turned upside down. For the preparation of the substrate, sand and peat are used in equal amounts.

It should be noted that viburnum "buldenezh", for which it was chosen as the only way, grows quite full-fledged and lush with correct organization activities to care for her. In the case of cultivation with green cuttings, they must be harvested before mid-June, the leaves located at the bottom must be removed, the top two leaves must be cut by two-thirds to avoid wilting of the remaining leaves. The cuttings tied in a bundle should be placed in a special solution (heteroauxin) to a depth of three centimeters. After that, you need to stand for about 20 hours, take them out and transplant them into a pot (depth - 2 cm), then cover with a jar, put on the windowsill and constantly moisten.
