Make a wood lathe with a copier yourself. Diy lathe copier (lathe copying machine)

Copying lathes are used to make many of the same parts, such as balusters for stair railings, fence posts, etc. You can make a functional structure with your own hands, using devices unnecessary in the household.

Lathe making

lathe-copying homemade machine

The most primitive model of a lathe is made from conventional drill... But this is not the only solution. The main parts of the future device:

  • bed;
  • front and rear racks (headstock);
  • electric motor;
  • master and slave centers;
  • tool stop.

The bed is the base for placing all the elements and mechanisms. Therefore, it is made of thick timber or metal. The headstock is securely fixed on the base, the part will be fixed to it. The front pillar houses a device that transmits movement from the electric motor to the driving center and then to the part.

The back stand (headstock) moves along a guide on the bed, it holds the free end of the workpiece. A tool stop is placed between the headstock. Headstock should be located strictly along a single axis.

For a do-it-yourself machine, an electric motor with a power of 200 - 250 W, with a speed of no more than 1500 is suitable. If you plan to process large parts, a more powerful motor is required.

A faceplate is put on the pulley of the electric motor, which fixes large workpieces. The faceplate contains points on which the part is pressed. The opposite end of the part is fixed with a corner.

To turn ordinary lathe to the copier, it is required additional device - copier.

Copier for lathe

The copier will be based on unnecessary manual frezer... It is placed on a plywood surface of 12 mm, the size of the site is 20 x 50 cm. Holes for fasteners and cutters are made in the site, and stops are installed - bars for fixing the cutter. The router is placed between the clips and secured with a pair of large nails.

The distant part of the platform moves along the bed along a guide - a pipe. The ends are fixed in wooden blocks. The bars are attached to the frame with self-tapping screws. When fixing the pipe, it is necessary to use a level and align the axis of the pipe with the center of the machine. Before installation, a pair of bars with holes are put on the pipe, easily moving along the guide. A platform is attached to the bars, on which the router is located.

Second important element do it yourself directly on the lathe - a bar in a horizontal position, on which templates will be attached. A bar of 7 x 3 cm is suitable, it is attached to the vertical supports with self-tapping screws. The stands are screwed onto the bed. The top surface of the bar must be in perfect alignment with the machine axis.

When the copier is not in use, the block is dismantled, the platform with the milling cutter is retracted and the machine turns into a regular lathe.

The stop is made of thick plywood and is attached to the work surface. In fact, the emphasis plays the role of a copier in this design. It is fixed vertically, to the end of the working surface it is fixed on a transition bar made of wood. The copier can be removed, it is installed on the stand with self-tapping screws. The stand must be fixed rigidly, without the possibility of removal.

The templates are made of plywood, using self-tapping screws, they are screwed to the front surface of the bar. The upper surface of the timber should be aligned with the axis of the template.

Cons of the proposed design

  • The working surface with the milling cutter has to be moved with both hands, since during operation it is skewed and jammed;
  • you can only copy enough simple elements, for example, it is impossible to repeat the twisted patterns on the posts;
  • it is more convenient to provide a screw drive to move the cutter;
  • and it is better to replace the cutter with a circular one, such a device will turn out to be more universal.

How to make a copier for a wood lathe?

In order to make a copier for a wood lathe, you will need the following components that will be needed in the manufacturing process:

  • an electric motor with a capacity of approximately 800W;
  • metal shaft with attachment for changing the saw blade;
  • metal square profile, metal corners;
  • wood sheet;
  • furniture guides;
  • metal marker;
  • fastening materials.
  • welding machine, Bulgarian.

First you need to make metal guides.

They will allow you to move the entire structure of the copier in the longitudinal plane. In this case, two metal corners are used, which are turned downward with a sharp side. The corners are welded to pieces together metal profile.

This approach allows you to provide the necessary mechanical strength and exclude the possibility of deflection of the guides under the weight of the copier. In practice, any other metal profile can be suitable for the manufacture of longitudinal guides, the main thing is that its mechanical parameters make it possible to carry out the tasks set.

In this case, for the manufacture of the base of the future copier, wooden box and a board. The board is sized to move inside the box in a perpendicular plane.

For fixing and subsequent movement, ordinary furniture guides are used.

An engine is attached to the board from above. In this case, the power electric motor is 800W, and the speed is 3000 rpm. Depending on your needs, you can use the motor with other parameters.

Next, the shaft should be fixed on the board at such a distance that the belt drive normally connects two pulleys, one of which is located at the end of the motor shaft, and the second on the horse shafts of the saw blade. It uses a homemade shaft with one bearing.

A U-shaped structure must be made from a square metal profile. In the upper part of the U-shaped structure, a special square metal holder is welded to the horizontal bar. The holder should be shorter than the marker.

Holes are drilled on the top plate to secure the marker in the holder. A metal nut is welded over each hole, into which a bolt is screwed. Two bolts are sufficient for a secure fit. The adjustable marker is very convenient when changing saw blades of different diameters.

Simply install the desired disc and use a plumb line to align the marker to the edge of the disc. The attachment of the marker must match the position of the saw blade in all planes. This allows a simple movement of the marker along the blank template to coaxially move the disc along the rotating blank.

The entire machine is assembled from two channels and metal corners for the scabbard. On which the motor is fixed, rotating wooden blank... In this case, an electric motor with a power of 1200W is used.

As a frame you can use old frame from some other machine. For the convenience of operation, it is better to place the engine on a removable metal plate, which allows you to move the structure with the workpiece, both in the vertical plane and in the horizontal plane.

The headstock is made of four metal plates in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped. IN end walls two nuts are welded into the pressure head, into which a metal screw is screwed. A cone with a chuck is installed at the end of the screw.

In the case when you need to exclude the possibility of contamination of the surrounding space with sawdust from the operation of the machine or to minimize the percentage of pollution as much as possible, you should make a hood.

The saw blade is covered with a metal casing, to which a flexible corrugated hose and a compressor unit are attached to create an air flow of a given power.

Do-it-yourself lathe copier (copy lathe)

Making a copier of a lathe with your own hands is not the most difficult task. But in order to achieve the desired result in terms of quality and efficiency, you will have to make some efforts. Will come in handy for you detailed drawing, a copy template and a few hours of free time. We offer you a version of a copier machine based on a hand milling cutter as a cutting tool.

Photo of a copier lathe with your own hands

The offered copier for your lathe requires little financial, time and labor costs. This is what attracts a large number of craftsmen who need a copier for a lathe.

The cutting device will be a manual router. At the same time, the operational capabilities of the copier directly depend on the characteristics of the turning equipment.

You should not count on the attractiveness of the design of a self-created device, since its main task is to create copies from a template without unnecessary energy consumption.

The device of the machine with a copier

DIY lathe copier drawing

  • To get started, to create a lathe with a copier, you need a hand router. Choose its type yourself, depending on the planned work;
  • The router is mounted on a support platform with dimensions of approximately 50 x 20 centimeters. It can be made from 12 mm plywood sheets;
  • At your request, the copying machine can get a larger or smaller area. The dimensions largely depend on the parameters of the selected router;
  • On the support platform, make holes through which the cutters will come out;
  • Holes for fasteners are also made here. It is optimal to use bolts in the role of fasteners;
  • Thrust bars located around the perimeter and fixed with self-tapping screws will provide protection against accidental movements of the cutter when processing products;
  • Having installed the supports of the cutters between the bars, make sure that it is fixed securely, there are no vibrations or backlash;
  • The far end of the support platform must be able to move along the guide tube along the entire length of the turning equipment;
  • Use a guide tube with a diameter of 25 mm, or adapt to your machine parameters;
  • The main condition when choosing pipes is that they must cope with the loads from the weight of the router, do not bend, maintain an evenness, surface smoothness;
  • Fix the pipe ends with a pair of wooden blocks suitable size;
  • The bars are mounted to the machine body with self-tapping screws or through bolts.

Installation of structural elements

In order for the lathe with a copier to work efficiently, and the copying process does not raise quality issues, in no case do not rush. It is the haste that does not allow craftsmen to make a really good copier for a lathe with their own hands.

After examining the drawing on the basis of which you decided to build a copier with your own hands, stick to the proposed sizes. If you allow even a small error, the copying technology can be completely violated, the work axes will be lost.

To prevent this from happening, stick to a few important rules.

  1. The axis of the pipe intended for the movement of the mill must be exactly parallel to the axis of rotation of the machine.
  2. The coincidence of the axis of the pipe and the axis of the machine is also an important plus, although this condition is not mandatory.
  3. The main point is the coincidence of the milling cutter in the lowest position with the axis of the lathe. This parameter is controlled and changed as needed by the placement level of the copier.
  4. Fix the guide tube through the blind holes of the wooden blocks. But just before fixing, put on the pipe two bars on which the installation of the supporting platform is planned.
  5. Wooden blocks for the supporting platform must move very easily, or rather slide along the guide pipe. If loosening is noticed, the copy unit will have to be redone.

Many are afraid of the moment when increased requirements for sliding are imposed. But making a machine with such operating parameters is not difficult if you take into service an even, smooth pipe.

Horizontal bars

The next step is to mount a horizontal block of wood, which is the second most important work component of your copier lathe.

  • Adhere to the same accuracy requirements as in the operations described above;
  • Horizontal bar connects to the blank profile template;
  • To make a bar with your own hands, you can use a workpiece measuring 7 by 3 millimeters and fix it with self-tapping screws to uprights;
  • The wooden stands themselves are mounted to the lathe bed by any method convenient for you;
  • Make sure the top edge of the horizontal element is parallel to the machine axis and level;
  • If at some point you do not need the copying functionality, you can easily remove the block with your own hands, fold the mounting platform to the edge of the machine and use the turning unit on it direct appointment without a copier;
  • A vertical stop is mounted to the work table. A sheet is fine here thin plywood... Although if you need more robust construction, use steel sheets;
  • This element is used to move along the copier when sharpening parts. It sets the spatial position for the working router. Therefore, the copier should be fixed as securely as possible;
  • Thickness plays an important role. The thinner the vertical stop, the more accurately your template will be able to copy the lathe. But even if the stop is too thin, the device begins to move along the template with certain difficulties. Therefore, the best way out of the situation is to search for an intermediate option;
  • If you use plywood to make a copier, be sure to provide for the use of its removable structure. This will make it easy to dismantle the copier when it is worn out, replace it with a new one with minimal time costs.

Template

Last, but not least, a lathe with a copier function is the copying template itself. It is not difficult to make it, but the configuration completely depends on the parameters of the products that you want to get with your machine.

  • Take a sheet of plywood or OSB board;
  • Mark on the sheet according to the contours of the future product that you want to carve on lathe;
  • Be sure to match all dimensions with the required parameters;
  • Using an electric jigsaw, use a neatly cutting blade to walk along the contours, cutting necessary detail;
  • Process the edges grinder or usual sandpaper... There should be no irregularities, burrs, chipping on the template;
  • Fix the resulting template on a horizontal rail using self-tapping screws;
  • Carry out the fixation strictly in accordance with the setting parameters.

Using drawings and video instructions, you can easily make yourself a fairly effective, productive copying lathe on your own. You just need a little patience and time.

Wood copying machine: assembly of turning and milling equipment

All photos from the article

A lathe-copying machine for wood is a machine that is widely used in factory woodworking to replicate products of a certain configuration, corresponding to a given pattern. This equipment allows you to process any parts with high precision and speed. However, production machines with their large dimensions will be difficult to locate in a small private workshop.

A huge machine easily copes with work that is beyond human control

Copying equipment in woodworking

Many amateurs of joinery, gradually expanding their tool base and improving their skills, come to the idea of assembling a copying lathe for wood with their own hands. Indeed, with the help of this device it is possible to make an exact copy of any piece of furniture and carry out restoration work.

Note! In most cases, of course, the main factor that drives people to "reinvent the wheel" is high price for a finished factory product.

The principle of work on a wood copying machine is quite simple:

  • The workpiece of the required size is clamped horizontally.
  • We launch a device that forces the workpiece to rotate around its axis.
  • In turn, the movable cutter also removes excess wood, turning the blank into a product of the desired shape.

Similar products can be obtained by working on copying equipment

Structurally, a copying device for a wood lathe is whole line parts connected to each other, so there will be something to work on.

Hand-made assembly of equipment at home

Lathe

In order to assemble a small copying machine for wood with your own hands, you will need to make some effort and patience, as well as invest financially (about 7-7.5 thousand rubles). But this is several times less than the costs that await you if you purchase a ready-made version.

These are the masterpieces of the interaction of hands and head found in private workshops.

The model of small-sized equipment of the so-called bow type proposed for assembly can be conditionally divided into the following constituent elements:

  • Frame.
  • Leading and leading center.
  • Electric motor.
  • Headstock and tailstock.
  • Cutter stop.

Now let's talk in more detail about how the wood copying lathe looks and is assembled:

  • It is clear that the frame is the foundation of the entire structure, on which all other parts will be based. Therefore, corresponding requirements are imposed on it. It must be strong, stable and reliable. Therefore, it is better to make it from a steel profile, but it is also quite suitable wooden bar large cross-section. The motor and drive center are connected to each other and secured to the front of the base. Due to the electric drive, the disc rotates.

Another option, where the sampling depth depends on physical strength (pressing the handle, pictured)

Attention! The selection of an electric motor for a copying device for a wood lathe is carried out taking into account the size and complexity of the parts planned for production.

For the most simple tasks a 200-watt unit will be enough.

  • The headstock serves as a support for the workpiece, therefore it is permanently fixed to the frame.
  • By moving the tailstock along the frame, the workpiece will be converted into a part of a given sample.
  • A cutter stop is installed between the tailstock and the headstock, which will serve as a holder.
  • The tailstock, headstock and cutter stop are mounted in a straight line.
  • All components of the machine must be securely fastened with bolts.

Fasteners should only be selected new, galvanized, tightening all individual elements with effort so that the connection does not come loose. And you should install lathe-copying machines on wood only at a level to avoid the slightest vibration.

Milling machine

If desired, you can also assemble a homemade copier milling machine on wood with your own hands.

Such a device is capable of performing:

  • Surface milling to create profiles.
  • Volume milling for embossing.

A copying cutter for wood made of carbide metal reproduces the surface or contour of the master copier on the product.

The role of a copier is used:

  • Spatial model.
  • Flat template.
  • Reference model.
  • Outline drawing.

Simplest milling copier consists of a supporting frame - base, work table and directly milling headequipped with an electric drive.

A hole is made in the center of the board and a router is attached in place of the hole, only from the back side

  • The dimensions of the desktop depend on the specific tasks for which the copy milling machine is going, as well as on the dimensions of the working room.
  • Based on the nature of the work and the dimensions of future products, methods of fastening the blanks and the template are determined.
  • The power of the electric motor rotating the cutter is also selected taking into account the planned loads.

Advice! For milling wood products and engraving at home, a motor with a power of 150-200 watts is enough.

Thus, having a copy-milling machine for wood in the workshop, you can create copies of parts necessary for repairing furniture and others with your own hands. wooden structures... And you can make souvenir or decorative items according to our own drawings.

Since work on such equipment is rather dusty, it is best to place the machine outside or under an exhaust hood.

Important! In pursuit of economy, people often forget about the safety of their own and those of their loved ones. Please note: working at such a machine is quite traumatic.

Especially in cases where a person has not previously come across a similar product.

Output

We hope that the information presented will help determine the need for this instrument... If you are thinking about single work, then, most likely, the services of an organization working in this direction will cost you more easily and cheaper. If there is a desire to put something on the conveyor, then you cannot do without your own machine.

In the video presented in this article, you will find additional information on this topic.

There are many types of machine tools. They are divided according to their performance into industrial, designed for small industries, and desktop or household. The first two types are used in small and large industries, and for home use the last option is suitable. As a rule, it is installed on a workbench and single items are made on it.

Also, the machines differ in functionality. The following varieties are distinguished:

  1. Turning-copying allows you to create several identical parts. To operate a lathe with a copier, a stencil is required, according to which an exact copy is created.
  2. Turning and milling has additional features for boring grooves.
  3. The screw-lathe is able to cut threads and sharpen products under the cone.
  4. Lobotocar is used to make items on a wide flat base - bas-reliefs, high-reliefs, volumetric paintings.
  5. The round-rod gives any workpiece a round shape in cross-section. Widely used for the release of hatchets, cuttings for gardening tools, handles for hand tool - chisels, knives, mops. The workpiece itself is stationary in a circular-rod lathe, only wood cutters rotate.

According to the degree of automation, they are divided into manual, semi-automatic and CNC machines, in which the turner only sets the workpiece and turns on the specified program.

Lathe device

A typical wood lathe consists of several main parts: an electric motor, a bed, a handguard, and a headstock and tailstock.

The bed is the basis of the machine, all other mechanisms are fixed on it. As a rule, it is solid cast iron. The large weight of the monolithic bed can significantly reduce the vibration of the equipment, which negatively affects the service life of the machine.

The headstock has several functions. The workpiece is attached to it and rotation is transmitted from the electric motor through the spindle installed on it using a belt drive.

The speed of rotation of the part is changed by moving the belt onto pulleys of the required diameter. This arrangement is similar to how the gears work on a modern multi-speed bicycle.

The workpiece in the spindle is held at one end by a drive chuck, and at the other end by a lathe chuck for wood on the tailstock.

The functionality of a wood lathe can be expanded with a faceplate. A part is attached to it if you need to grind its ends, which were clamped by cartridges.

Also, machines are equipped with copiers, which allow you to make several identical parts with great accuracy.

Brief description and characteristics of the lathe STD 120M

The machine has a simple and reliable designproven over the years. It is installed in school workshops, vocational schools, in the shops of enterprises, and is used at home. With its help, the following wood turning work is performed:

  • drilling;
  • stencil turning;
  • sharpening of rotating parts of different profiles;
  • facing, rounding and cutting off parts at different angles;
  • processing of flat surfaces using a faceplate.

The machine device has its own characteristics:

  • the change in rotation speed is changed by moving the belt to pulleys of different diameters;
  • the control unit is located on the headstock for maximum convenience during work;
  • the set of equipment includes several spindle-type nozzles, which allows you to fix workpieces with any type of ends;
  • for the safety of the worker, the machine is equipped with a casing and shutters with transparent windows;
  • to remove chips, a cleaning unit is additionally connected.

The unit is connected to a three-phase electrical network with a voltage of 380 V and mandatory grounding.

How to make the simplest lathe from a drill

As you can see, the device of this unit is very simple, and everyone can make a homemade lathe for wood. The most elementary tool for turning workpieces is obtained from a conventional drill. It will allow you to carry out simple turning work at home and save on the purchase of special equipment. The drill in this case replaces the headstock and rotation drive.

Instead of a cast iron bed, a workbench is used. Wood stops are fixed on it for attaching a drill and a tailstock. The back stop is made of bars and an adjustable screw, the end of which is sharpened on a cone. Various drill bits, which are attached instead of a drill, serve as turning cutters for wood.

On such a simple device, handles for tools and doors, simple decorative items, balusters and much more are grinded.

DIY wood lathe

This design is a little more complicated, but it also has more possibilities. At the heart of homemade bedwelded from metal corners and mounted on a workbench or on its legs. The reliability of the bed is given special attentionso that the machine vibrates as little as possible during operation. The design of the bed provides for the presence of a longitudinal guide for moving individual elements.

Leans on a handful cutting tool... The bracket for it must not only move in the horizontal plane, but also rotate along the axis of the attachment. The plane of the support of the handler should coincide with the axis of rotation of the part in processing.

Any serviceable electric motor of any household appliance sufficient power. The easiest way is to mount the spindle directly onto the shaft without transfer devices.

This method is cheaper and saves space on the bed. But it also has its drawbacks - it is impossible to regulate the rotation speed and uneven wear of bearings, which are not designed for longitudinal load.

Therefore, it is worthwhile to provide a separate unit for the spindle. The torque will be supplied by belt driven pulleys.

A spindle is a part that fixes the workpiece by transmitting torque to it. May look like a slip-toothed stop or have screw clamps. The version with clamps is called a faceplate.

The tailstock holds the part on the axis of rotation. The easiest option is a taper-sharpened bolt. A more complex stop is made from a thrust bearing.

For normal work of the machine, the centers of both headstock and the plane of the handguard should ideally coincide.

As a result, a homemade wood lathe should look something like this:

Particular attention should be paid to the stability of the entire structure so that strong lateral force does not overturn the machine. This could result in injury when the motor is running. To eliminate the most common failures when working with a homemade unit, consider the following subtleties:

  • the workpiece must rotate on the turner;
  • before processing the workpiece with cutters, give it a cylindrical shape (if possible);
  • the cutter should be pressed against the workpiece at an acute angle;
  • final grinding is done with fine sandpaper, this operation is carried out with gloves so as not to burn your hands from friction;
  • the harder the wood, the higher the shaft rotation speed should be.

When working on a wood lathe, do not forget about safety precautions. The worker must use protective equipment - special glasses, gloves, and, if necessary, a respirator.

The possibilities of a home-made lathe are expanded by equipping with additional nozzles and devices - they apply paint to a rotating part, grind identical parts using a copier, and even wind transformers.

Copier for wood lathe with hand router

We suggest you make a copying device yourself with minimal cost by time, the machine can be started at " industrial production»Chiseled parts by evening. The "cutting tool" will be a hand-held milling cutter, specifications for the parts to be manufactured depend on technical characteristics lathe for wood. Despite the fact that the copier is made using plywood, it can produce up to hundreds of products from one copier, you must agree that this amount is quite enough to fulfill most bulk orders.

The device does not look entirely "attractive" in terms of design, but we did not set ourselves such a task. We tried to make our "equipment" as easy to manufacture and more or less reliable. Which is what happened in the end. How is a copier made? Let's get to know him better.

Copier device

An ordinary hand-held milling cutter is adapted for the cutting tool, the specific model does not matter. Install the router on the support platform, our platform dimensions are 500 × 200 mm, made of sheet plywood 12 mm thick. You can increase or decrease slightly linear parameters platforms depending on the size manual cutter... On site, make holes for the cutter to exit and holes for the mounting bolts. In order to completely exclude unauthorized spontaneous movements of the cutter during operation, we advise you to install additional persistent bars around the perimeter on the site, fix the bars with self-tapping screws, the length of the screws is selected taking into account the thickness of the fixing bars.

The router must be installed between the thrust bars, check the reliability of its fixation, any oscillations are completely excluded. The far end of the platform should "ride" along the pipe along the entire length of the lathe on wood, we used a Ø 25 mm pipe, you can take other pipes for making. The main thing is that they withstand the weight of the router without bending, be absolutely even and with a perfectly smooth surface. Secure the ends of the pipe with two wooden blocks, in our case, we used 80 × 35 mm bars. Screw the bars to the lathe body using self-tapping screws for metal, you do not have to cut the threads for the bolts. If your machine device does not allow you to fix the bars in this way, then solve this problem in your own way.

Installation of main structural elements homemade copier

Strong advice - do not rush during the manufacture of equipment, turned parts for a copier do not forgive even the slightest violations of not only technology, but also the location of the working axes. It follows from this that the axis of the pipe along which the router will move should be ideally parallel to the axis of rotation of the lathe. It happened by itself that the axis of the pipe coincided with the axis of the machine, but this condition is not necessary. The main thing is that the cutting tool of the cutter in the lowest position coincides with the axis of the machine, and this parameter can be adjusted by the level of the copier.

The pipe is fixed in the blind holes of the bars; before fixing, two bars must be put on it, on which the supporting platform of the router will be installed. An important condition is that the bars for the platform should easily slide along the guide tube, but wobbling is prohibited. Check this parameter, if necessary, manually grind the pipe and bars. Then fix the router support platform to the bars and install the router on it. Check the smoothness of the slide again, pay attention that there is no wobbling at all. Do not be afraid of such "strict" requirements for the quality of sliding. If you have a pipe with a normal surface and completely flat, then it is not difficult to achieve a smooth slide.

Installation of a horizontal bar

This is the second "working" element of a home-made copier; all of the above requirements must be observed in terms of installation accuracy. The profile template of the parts is attached to the horizontal bar. A 70 × 30 mm bar is quite suitable for manufacturing, it is attached with self-tapping screws to vertical wooden racks, fix the racks with any in a convenient way to the lathe bed. The top edge of the horizontal bar must be parallel to the machine axis and level with it. If the copier becomes temporarily unnecessary, then the block can be easily removed, the mounting platform for the router is folded back to the extreme rear position and the wood lathe can be used for its intended purpose.

Attach the vertical stop to the working platform of the router, we made it from thin plywood, you can use more durable materials, up to metal. During turning, this part will move along the copier and set the spatial position of the cutter, fasten the copier as firmly as possible. There is a direct relationship in thickness: the thinner it is, the more accurately the dimensions will be taken from the template. But there is another dependence - a copier that is too thin makes it difficult to move the device along the template, choose the middle ground. The copier height must be adjusted after final assembly of the machine, during the regulation it is necessary to comply with all the listed conditions. One more point. If you have a copier made of plywood, then you need to make it removable, this will allow you to quickly change a worn out copier to a new one during milling a large number products of the same type.

Copier emphasis

How the template is made

There is nothing new here. Draw on the strip of plywood or OSB board the contours of the part to be machined, check all the dimensions again and carefully cut out with an electric jigsaw. The edges must be sanded to remove any burrs and irregularities. Fix the template on the horizontal rail with self-tapping screws, observe all installation dimensions during fixing.

Some features of turning

You only have to move the device with two hands, otherwise it may jam on the pipe. Another problem - the radii of the turned parts are limited by the diameter of the cutter, this must be borne in mind when selecting the profile of the turned parts. Practice shows the dependence of the feed rate on the cutter diameter: the smaller the cutter diameter, the less the feed should be and vice versa.

  • Copying lathes are used to make many of the same parts, such as stair railings, fence posts, etc. You can make a functional structure with your own hands, using devices unnecessary in the household.

    Lathe making

    The most primitive model of a lathe is made from a conventional drill. But this is not the only solution. The main parts of the future device:

    • bed;
    • front and rear racks (headstock);
    • electric motor;
    • master and slave centers;

    To turn an ordinary lathe into a copying machine, an additional device is required - a copier.

    The base of the copier will be an unnecessary manual router. It is placed on a plywood surface of 12 mm, the size of the site is 20 x 50 cm. Holes are made in the site for fasteners and cutters, and stops are installed - bars for fixing the cutter. The router is placed between the clips and secured with a pair of large nails.

    The distant part of the platform moves along the bed along a guide - a pipe. Its ends are fixed in wooden bars. The bars are attached to the bed with self-tapping screws. When fixing the pipe, you must use a level and align the axis of the pipe with the center of the machine. Before installation, a pair of bars with holes are put on the pipe, easily moving along the guide. A platform is attached to the bars, on which the router is located.

    The second important element is installed by hand directly on the lathe - a bar in a horizontal position, on which templates will be attached. A bar of 7 x 3 cm is suitable; it is attached to the vertical supports with self-tapping screws. The stands are screwed onto the bed. The top surface of the bar must be in line with the machine axis.

    • The working surface with the milling cutter has to be moved with both hands, since during operation it is skewed and jammed;
    • you can copy only fairly simple elements, for example, it is impossible to repeat the twisted patterns on the columns;
    • it is more convenient to provide a screw drive to move the cutter;
    • and it is better to replace the cutter with a circular one, such a device will turn out to be more universal.

    A lathe-copying machine for wood is a machine that is widely used in factory woodworking for replicating products of a certain configuration, corresponding to a given pattern. This equipment allows you to process any part with high precision and speed. However, production machines with their large dimensions will be difficult to locate in a small private workshop.

    Note!
    In most cases, of course, the main factor driving people to “reinvent the wheel” is the high price of the finished manufactured product.

    The principle of work on a wood copying machine is quite simple:

    • The workpiece of the required size is clamped horizontally.
    • Launching the device, forcing the workpiece to rotate around its axis.
    • In turn, the movable cutter also removes excess wood, turning the blank into a product of the desired shape.

    Structurally, a copying device for a wood lathe is a whole series of parts connected to each other, so there will be something to work on.

    In order to assemble a small copying machine for wood with your own hands, you will need to make some effort and patience, as well as invest financially (about 7-7.5 thousand rubles). But this is several times less than the costs that await you if you purchase a ready-made version.
