For a long time, the prayer was recommended to be read slowly, evenly, in order to "enclose attention in words." Only when the prayer that you want to bring to God is meaningful enough and means a lot to yourself, you will be able to “reach out” to the Lord. If you are inattentive to the words you utter, if your own heart does not respond to the words of prayer, your requests will not reach God.

Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh said that his father, when he started to pray, hung a sign on the door: “I am at home. But do not try to knock, I will not open. But you should never confuse the words of a sincere prayer with a prayer that looks more like a hysteria. An answer to prayer

For some reason, we are sure: it is enough for us to start prayer, and God is obliged to appear before us, pay attention to us, let us feel His presence, let us know that he is listening to us attentively. Recognized as the most outstanding theologian, Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh wrote:

If it was possible to call God ... mechanically, so to speak, to force Him to a meeting only because we have appointed this very moment for a meeting with Him, then there would be no meeting, no relationship. Relationships must begin and develop precisely in mutual freedom. … We complain that He does not reveal His presence in the few minutes that we devote to Him throughout the day; but what to say about the other twenty-three and a half hours, when God can knock on our door as much as he wants, and we answer: “Sorry, I'm busy,” or don't answer at all, because we don't even hear Him knocking at our door heart, our mind, our consciousness or conscience, our life. So: we have no right to complain about the absence of God, because we ourselves are much more absent!

There is one amazing story in the book of Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh:

About twenty-five years ago, shortly after I became a priest, I was sent to minister before Christmas in a nursing home. There was an old lady who later died at the age of one hundred and two. They came up to me after the first service and said: "Father Anthony, I would like to receive advice on prayer." ... I then asked her: "What is your problem?" And my old woman answered: "For fourteen years now I have been repeating the Jesus Prayer almost continuously and have never felt God's presence." And then I really, out of simplicity, told her what I thought: "If you keep saying, when will God insert the word?" She asked: "What should I do?" And I said: “After breakfast in the morning, go to your room, clean it up, make the chair more comfortable, so that all the dark corners that are always in the room of an elderly woman and where things hide from prying eyes remain behind its back. Light a lamp in front of the icon and then look around in your room. Just sit, look around, and try to see where you live, because I am sure that if you have been praying for the last fourteen years, then you have not noticed your room for a very long time. And then take knitting, and knit in front of God for fifteen minutes; but I forbid you to utter a single word of prayer. Just knit and try to enjoy the silence of your room. "

She thought this was not very godly advice, but decided to try it. After a while she came to me and said: "You know, it turns out!" I asked: "What happens?" - because I was very curious how my advice worked. And she says: “I did as you said: I got up, washed, cleaned my room, had breakfast, came back, made sure that there was nothing around that would annoy me ... I remembered that I had to knit in front of God, and then I took knitting, and more and more I felt the silence ... It did not consist of absence, in it there was the presence of something. The surrounding silence began to fill me and merge with the silence in me. " And in the end she said something very beautiful, which I later met with the French writer Georges Bernanos; she said: “I suddenly noticed that this silence is a presence; and in the core of this silence was the One Who - Silence itself, Peace itself, Harmony itself ”.

Very often this could happen to us, if instead of fussing and “doing” something, we could simply say: “I am in God's presence. What joy! Let me be quiet ... ".

It often happens that in prayer we do not always ask for what we really need, we ask as if “in reserve”. Sometimes we ask for something that might not be useful for us, and as a result we get nothing.

But even when we ask God for something we cannot live without, we lack patience and constancy. We believe that once having asked and not having received what we want, we must abandon prayer: well, God does not give what is asked, what can you do! One of the Church Fathers says that prayer is like an arrow, but this arrow will fly, reach the goal only if the shooter has the skills of shooting, skill, patience and willpower.

Unfortunately, we often don't even notice that our prayer has already been answered. Yes, the answer is not always pleasant, but it is given to us as a medicine, but medicines are rarely sweet.

Therefore, experienced people advise beginners in the prayer path: "Be careful in your prayers, because one day they may be fulfilled."

Why does God send sickness to us?

The question "Why did God send me sickness?" - perhaps the most common among those who have recently come to faith. Probably, to people, the Lord seems to be a kind of judge in a robe, who, from morning to evening, weighs the measure of everyone's guilt and determines the punishments. Did you do something bad? Here's your illness! Did you do something really bad? Your illness will be long and difficult! Next time you will think before you do something bad ...

If everything was so simple with God, life here on Earth would be much easier for us! It would be enough not to commit bad deeds, and each of us would always be healthy and prosperous. But you yourself have probably noticed yourself: very often kind, good, smart people live hard, get seriously ill, overcome adversity throughout their lives, and people who are not too decent live smartly and don’t blow a mustache. They have everything - health, money, and luck in business ... Why does this happen? Yes, because the Lord, being really the Supreme Judge, in fact does not judge us during our lifetime. And it does not punish. There are, of course, exceptions, but for this you need to do something absolutely terrible. In other cases, the Lord gives us the freedom to choose: to do this or that, to go one way or another. We build our own life. And the responsibility for HOW they were built will have to be much later - when this process has already been completed. Believe me, the Lord is not at all concerned with punishing us with sickness for every sin. Moreover, very often illness is not a punishment for a person, it is sent to him, oddly enough, for his own good. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true. This is how Father Georgy Simakov, rector of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in the village of Trinity, Tver province, answers this question.

- Many people are convinced that illness is God's punishment for sins. Is it so?

- Of course not. In general, the Lord is merciful; He rarely punishes people. And our diseases are not at all a punishment, as for some reason it is customary to think among the people. Sometimes illness is given to a person as admonition so that he stops sinning. Do you feel the difference? Not as punishment, but as admonition. Man himself cannot stop on the wrong path in life, and the Lord helps him. Often, illness can serve as a protection against evil that is not yet perfect. It can be sent to a righteous person to test his faith. Diseases can be sent to us so that, having healed, a person himself will realize and convey to others through his healing the greatness of God. There is another type of illness, they are sent in order for a person to atone for those sins that he has committed out of ignorance or which he has forgotten. As you can see, there can be many causes of the disease. Each sick person should think carefully for himself what his illness means, why it was sent to him. Only by understanding this, one can pray with prayer to the Lord, to the Mother of God, to the saints with a request for healing.

- We often hear: "God is merciful and just!" Why does He allow people - often very good people! - did you hurt and suffer? Where is mercy and justice here?

- The Holy Fathers say: illness is not just suffering, it is the time when God visits a person. This happens invisibly and not always perceptibly, but immutably. The Lord brings a bodily illness to a person as a bitter medicine for a mental and spiritual ailment. Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk taught this way: “The health of the body opens the door for a person to many whims and sins, but the weakness of the body closes. During illness, we feel that human life is like a flower that dries up immediately, as soon as it blooms. "

And St. Theophan the Recluse wrote: “God sends something else as a punishment, like penance, another for reason, so that a person will come to his senses; otherwise, in order to get rid of the trouble that a person would fall into if he was healthy; otherwise, so that a person would show patience and thus deserve a greater reward; otherwise, to cleanse from what passion, and for many other reasons. After all, there is no human sin that would exceed the mercy of God ...

- Why are the same sufferings good for some people and bad for others?

- And you remember the robbers crucified near the Lord on two crosses. One, suffering, and thanked the Lord, and asked that He help him and lead him into His Kingdom, and the other blasphemed God. So all people relate to the cross of diseases sent to them: some ask God, while others blaspheme Him. The prudent robber inherited heaven, and the evil robber inherited hell, although both were at the cross of the Lord.

- What should you do if you get sick?

During an illness, each person must resort to shrines: eat the holy prosphora, anoint with holy oil, take it inside and sprinkle with holy water, read prayers in front of the icons of the Mother of God, the holy saints of God who help in illness, especially the holy Great Martyr Panteleimon.

- Often, when they fall ill, Orthodox people do not go to the doctor, they say: "Everything is God's will!" How does the Church feel about this issue?

- The Lord created doctors to heal sick people. Therefore, when we heal ourselves or do not heal at all, we are committing a sin against our health. It is imperative to be treated! But one should not forget prayer either, because prayer is our best helper and faithful healer in illness. It is very useful to drink Epiphany (Epiphany) water during illness, which has tremendous healing power. There are many cases when just a few drops poured into the mouth of an unconscious patient brought him to his senses and changed the course of the disease.

Small consecration water (you can take it any day in any church) is drunk as needed, reciting the same prayer. In addition, they lubricate holy water, moisten sore spots, sprinkle themselves and sprinkle their things, ward and hospital bed, food. For headaches or other pains, a compress with Epiphany water helps.

The suffering of a sick person is also relieved by holy oil. For the patient, the oil is important, which is consecrated during the unction, litiya. They are anointed and added to food. - I have a positive attitude to professional herbal treatment. Homeopathy was widely used by priests before the revolution. Saint John of Kronstadt, Saint Theophan the Recluse, Saint Ignatius of Brianchaninov, Saint Ambrose of Optina and other fathers spoke with approval about this science and blessed the use of its methods. Why do we pray to the saints?

Why pray to the saints if there is Christ? Sooner or later, every Orthodox person asks himself this question (and then not only himself). What is this? Does God Himself not hear us? Do we need intermediaries to communicate with Him? And it turns out that the host of saints is something like a "referent service" of the Lord, through which all our requests for help, our prayers pass?

No, that's not how it works! As proof, I want to give you the story of the priest Dionisy Svechnikov, who in practice often has to deal with people who are perplexed why we pray to the saints.

Once I had to talk with a young man who, having come to the church, was very indignant at the presence of a large number of icons in the church. It was evident that the young man was well versed in the knowledge of Holy Scripture, had an idea of ​​some Christian dogmas, although somewhat distorted, but at the same time he was a completely non-church person ...

... He backed up his arguments with the words of Holy Scripture: “It has been said,“ You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone ”” (Matthew 4:10). So why is there such a large number of icons of saints in Orthodox churches, when apart from images of Christ there should be nothing? And when you go to church, you just hear, pray to the Mother of God, Nicholas the Wonderworker, Panteleimon the Healer and someone else. Where did God go? Or have you already managed to replace Him with other gods? "

I felt that the conversation was going to be difficult and, apparently, long. I will not retell it all, but I will try to highlight only the very essence, because in our difficult time many people ask such questions ...

To begin with, I invited the young man to deal with the definitions, following a simple logic ... So, who are the saints and why should they pray? Are they really some gods of a lower order? After all, the Church calls to honor them and offer prayers to them. To begin with, the veneration of saints is an ancient Christian tradition dating back to apostolic times. A martyr who suffered for Christ, immediately after his death, became an object of reverence for the reverent veneration of believers. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated on the tombs of the first Christian saints, and prayers were offered to them. It is clear that special reverence was given to the saint, but not at all as a separate god. These were people who gave their lives for God. And, first of all, they themselves would be against exalting them to the rank of deity. After all, we, for example, honor the memory of people who laid down their lives for the Fatherland on the battlefields. And we even erect monuments to them so that future generations would know and honor these people. So why can't Christians honor the memory of people who especially pleased God with their life or martyrdom, while calling them saints? I asked the young man to answer this question. An affirmative answer followed. The first bastion of sectarian thinking has collapsed ...

... Thus, the Orthodox do not worship saints at all, but venerate them. They are honored as senior mentors, as people who have reached spiritual heights, as people living in God and for God. People who have reached the Kingdom of Heaven. And the basis for the veneration of mentors was given by the apostle. Paul: “Remember your mentors…. and considering the end of their life, imitate their faith ”(Heb. 13: 7). And the faith of the saints is the Orthodox faith, and it calls for the veneration of the saints since the apostolic times. And one of the greatest saints, John Damascene, spoke of this veneration: “Venerable saints are not by nature, we worship them, because God glorified and made them terrible for enemies and benefactors for those who come to them with faith. We worship them not as gods and benefactors by nature, but as servants and co-servants of God, who have boldness towards God because of their love for Him. We adore them, because the King Himself takes reverence to Himself when he sees that they honor a loved one not as a King, but as an obedient servant and a benevolent friend to Him. "

Our conversation with the young man turned into a calmer channel, and now he listened more than spoke. But to make it more convincing, it was necessary to give a couple more weighty arguments that I was right, and I hastened to do it.

The saints are our prayer books and patrons in heaven and therefore living and active members of the militant, earthly Church. Their grace-filled presence in the Church, which appears outwardly in their icons and relics, surrounds us, as it were, with a prayer cloud of the glory of God. It does not separate us from Christ, but brings us closer to Him, unites us with Him. These are not mediators between God and people who would remove the One Mediator Christ, as the Protestants think, but our companions, friends and helpers in our service to Christ and our communion with Him.

Now I could calmly move on to the question of prayer to the saints. As I have shown above, the saints are our companions and friends on the path of serving God. But can't we ask to intercede for us before the throne of the Almighty? Isn't the same thing happening in our daily life when we ask our loved ones and acquaintances to put in a word for us in front of the authorities? But our Heavenly Father is much higher than any earthly leadership. And everything is really possible for Him that cannot be said about ordinary earthly people. But when praying to the saints, one should not at all forget about praying to the Lord. For only He is the Giver of all blessings.

And this is a very important point, since many Orthodox Christians in prayer to the saints forget about the One to whom, in the end, the prayer request will be sent, even if it is a representation of one of the saints. A Christian should not forget about the Lord his God. After all, the saints also served Him. By this I showed the young man how important it is not to go too far, even in such a seemingly simple matter as prayer. It was evident that the guy was in some confusion, but collecting his thoughts, he gave the last question: "Tell me, why is it necessary to pray to different saints on some specific issue?" I was expecting this question and the answer was already ready. The saints can help us not because of the abundance of their merits, but because of the spiritual freedom they gain in love, which is achieved by their exploit. She gives them the power to stand before God in prayer, as well as in active love for people. God allows the saints, along with the angels of God, to do their will in the lives of people with active, although usually invisible, help. They are the hands of God, with which God does His works. Therefore, it is given to the saints even beyond death to do deeds of love, not as a deed for their salvation, which has already been accomplished, but, indeed, to help in the salvation of other brethren. And this help is granted by the Lord Himself in all our everyday needs and experiences through the prayers of the saints. Hence the saints are patrons of certain professions or intercessors before God in everyday needs. The pious church tradition, based on the lives of the saints, ascribes to them effective assistance to their earthly brethren in various needs. For example, George the Victorious, who was a warrior during his lifetime, is revered as the patron saint of the Orthodox army. They pray to the Great Martyr Panteleimon, who was a doctor during his lifetime, for deliverance from bodily ailments. Nicholas the Wonderworker is greatly revered by sailors, girls pray to him for a successful marriage, based on the facts of his life. People who live off fishing pray for a successful catch to the Apostles Peter and Andrew, who before their high calling were simple fishermen. And, of course, one cannot fail to say about the highest of all the angel and archangel of the Most Holy Theotokos, who stands at the head of the host of saints. She is the patroness of motherhood.

Our conversation was coming to a logical end. I very much hoped that the arguments presented by me should have left a mark on the soul of this young man. And I was not wrong. Why do we venerate holy relics?

What are holy relics? Why did the Orthodox Church establish their veneration? Where does the confidence of believers come from that through the prayers of the holy relics they will certainly receive the help and intercession of the saints?

“The word“ power ”literally translated from Greek means“ remains ”. In the same sense, the word “relics” has always been used in the Church Slavonic language. However, it would be more accurate to say that it is customary to call the bones of a deceased person relics, that which remains for a long time after his departure to another world.

One chronicle of 1472 tells about the discovery of the tombs of the Moscow metropolitans resting in the Cathedral of the Assumption: “Jonah has found a whole, but Fothea is not whole, but“ relics ”are one” (Collection of Russian Chronicles. Vol. VI. P. 195).

In 1667, the Novgorod Metropolitan Pitirim was informed about the discovery of the relics of the Monk Nil Stolbensky: “The coffin and body of his holy land have been betrayed, and his holy relics are all intact” (Acts collected in libraries and archives Russian Empire archaeographic expedition of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. SPb. T. IV. P. 156). In general, “in the language of ancient church literature, incorruptible relics are not incorruptible bodies, but preserved and uncorrupted bones” (EE Golubinsky, Canonization of Saints, pp. 297–298).

The Church history says that the surviving remains of holy martyrs and great ascetics have always been called relics. The relics are honored, even if they have survived only in the form of ash or dust.

In 156, the Hieromartyr Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, was killed with a sword and burned, but the bones that survived the fire and ashes were for Christians "more honest than precious stones and more precious than gold."

Saint John Chrysostom writes about the relics of the Antiochian martyr Babyla: “Many years have passed since his burial, only bones and ashes remained in his grave, which were transferred with great honor to the tomb on the outskirts of Daphne.”

Saint Lucian tells the following about the relics of the holy archdeacon Stephen that he found: “Only very small particles remained of his bones, and his whole body turned to dust ... With psalms and songs these relics (remains) of blessed Stephen were carried to the holy church of Zion…” Blessed Jerome says that the very revered relics of the prophet Samuel existed in the form of ashes, and the relics of the apostles Peter and Paul - in the form of bones (Golubinsky EE Decree, op. p. 35, note).

At the present time, at the discovery of the relics of the Monk Seraphim of Sarov (1903), Saint Pitirim of Tambov and Hieromartyr Hermogen, Patriarch of Moscow (1914), only the bones of saints have been found, which serve as the subject of reverent veneration for all believers.

Why has the Orthodox Church established the veneration of holy relics?

One of the teachers of the ancient Church of Origen says: “In prayer meetings there is a two-fold society: one is made up of people, the other is made up of celestials ...” This means, when praying at the relics of the saints, we seem to pray with them, with one prayer.

By the end of the 7th century, the Frankish Council decreed that the throne can only be consecrated in a church in which there are relics of saints, and the 7th Ecumenical Council (787) determined that “for the future, every bishop who consecrated a church without relics should be deposed” ( Rule 7). Since then, in every church there are antimensions, into which particles of holy relics are necessarily enclosed and without which the celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist is impossible. This means that in any church there are necessarily relics of saints, which, according to our faith, seem to serve as a guarantee of the presence of the saints during divine services, their participation in our prayers, their intercession for us before the Lord.

The third basis for the veneration of holy relics is the teaching of the Orthodox Church about relics as carriers of grace-filled forces. “Thy relics, like a vessel of grace full, overflowing on all who flow to them,” we read in prayer To the Monk Sergius Radonezhsky.

The grace of God is taught to mankind through the mediation of those or other holy people who performed miracles during their lifetime, and after death communicated this miraculous power to their remains.

The powers of grace that act through the bodies of the saints during their lifetime continue to operate in them even after death. It is on this that the veneration of holy relics as bearers of grace is based. The relics of the saints, says the prophet Ephraim the Syrian, heal the sick, cast out demons, for the grace of the Holy Spirit is always found in the holy remains ...
