Bathroom renovation website. Helpful Hints

How to calculate bathroom tiles. Mathematics for a fifth grader or how to calculate the tiles in the bathroom with high accuracy

When purchasing materials for repairs, you need to know exactly how much this or that material is needed. If you buy more, money will be wasted, but if you buy less, then the repair will have to be suspended in order to buy the required amount. Some materials are made in limited series, and there is a chance that you simply will not find the desired pattern or texture. The purchase of tiles is no exception: an accurate calculation will allow you to complete the work on time and at no additional cost.

Peculiarities

Calculating the required number of tiled squares is not an easy process. It is necessary to carefully make all measurements and calculations, depending on the characteristics of the room, the laying method and the size of the tile itself. You should not count on the fact that tiles can always be bought in addition, because even different batches of the same type may differ in shade or texture.

To ensure that the tile is exactly enough for the entire surface, you should immediately buy a little more than it turned out according to the calculation, since in some areas of the room the tiles need to be joined and cut, adjusting the ornament.

When calculating, it must be taken into account that the seam between the floor tile and the wall material does not remain, so that irregularities are not visible.

What is important to consider when calculating?

To begin with, the total surface area is calculated on which tiles of the same type will be laid. If it's a floor or ceiling, you need to multiply the width by the length; if it's walls, then you need to multiply their length by the height. Measurements are taken using an ordinary tape measure, the data is recorded on a piece of paper. In order to avoid a mistake or reveal curvature, you can take several measurements on different parts of the wall or floor. It is better to calculate the area in square meters, and then divide it by the area of one ceramic tile, the dimensions of which are also translated into meters. Thus, the minimum amount of material will be obtained without taking into account trimmings, matching the pattern, or taking into account marriage.

Laying tiles diagonally allows you to hide even significant defects in the floor and walls, however, when calculating laying in this way, it is necessary to lay a larger percentage on scraps and waste: 15-17%, depending on whether it is necessary to adjust the pattern on the tile. A private option for the diagonal placement of tiles is the "herringbone". There are two options for such laying: in one, the first tile is laid parallel to the walls and the laying goes diagonally; in another, the first tile goes at an angle and the laying lies perpendicular to the walls.

In cases where paving slabs are laid, it is best to allow 10 percent for defects during transport and installation. Such a tile is quite fragile and easily splits into pieces. It is also much more difficult to calculate the exact dimensions of the area of the driveway or path to the gazebo, because this is not a square room, clearly limited by walls, but an object of complex shape.

Simultaneously with the calculation of the amount of ceramics, you can also find out the required amount of grout for tile joints - fugue. You can calculate the approximate amount of fugue, as well as tiles, using special online calculators. It is necessary to enter already calculated data on the area into them, and the program itself will calculate everything, taking into account the percentage of defects. Or you can use various calculation formulas, according to which the average fugue consumption is 1.6 kg / m3. Often, manufacturers write the average consumption of tile adhesive and grout directly on the package.

This calculation can also be used, but for this it will be necessary to make it right in the store.

How to calculate?

The easiest way to calculate the number of tiles is, of course, to use online calculators to calculate. However, even if such a program is used, it is necessary to correctly measure all the necessary quantities, and the Internet may not be at hand, so it is better to know and be able to use several types of calculation.

Standard count

The simplest finishing option is the usual square tile of the same color or with an incompatible pattern (for example, marbled or wood). In the case of laying such material, you can start work from any angle and do not select the position of each tile before applying the adhesive.

Such ceramics can be cut from all sides and any of its trimmings can be used.

  • Step 1. The length of the walls is measured and the total length of the perimeter is calculated. If the room has a complex shape, all ledges and niches must be taken into account.
  • Step 2 Height is measured, all obtained values are rounded to the nearest centimeter.
  • Step 3 The area of windows and doors is subtracted from the obtained value, since these surfaces are not tiled. If tiles are laid on the ceiling, then the ceiling area is calculated.
  • Step 4 If the decorative bathroom screen is also decorated with tiles, then its area also needs to be calculated. And if the bath is installed near the wall, then the surfaces that will not be visible after installation, in order to save money, can not be tiled.
  • Step 5 Lay the percentage of marriage and waste during installation. It will be enough to increase the resulting figure by 10 percent to take into account all the factors that can affect the consumption of material: the work of a beginner or a professional, the presence of pipes and thresholds, a checkerboard or diagonal layout.

Example: There is a room with the following dimensions:

  • 2 m - the length of one wall;
  • 2.5 m - the length of the second wall;
  • 2.8 m - ceiling height;
  • door 2 m high and 0.8 m wide;
  • window 0.8 m long and 0.8 m high.

Thus, the area of the floor and all four walls is obtained: 2 * 2.5 + 2 * 2 * 2.8 + 2 * 2.5 * 2.8 = 30.2 m2.

The window area is 0.8 * 0.8 = 0.64 m2, and the door area is 2 * 0.8 = 1.6 m2.

Now, the area of one door and one window is subtracted from the resulting number, which are 1.6 m2 and 0.64 m2, respectively: 30.2–1.6–0.64 = 27.96 m2. The decorative bathroom screen will not be decorated with tiles, so its area is not needed. If we add another 10 percent to this number, we get a finished area of 30.76 m2.

The area of one square of medium-sized tiles (30x30 cm) is 0.09 m2. If you divide the resulting surface area by the area of one square, you get 342 whole tiles. And already, depending on how many tiles are in one package, the number of packages that will be needed for facing the floor and walls of this room is calculated.

With custom fit

If the bathroom uses a tile with a border insert, or a tile that is different in size and material, then it will not be possible to calculate in a simple way. First you need to also calculate the quadrature of the walls and floor, minus the area of windows and doors. Then it is necessary to lay out all the elements, alternating in rows from the bottom to the top, in one even column for the entire height of the finishing section.

We measure the width of the resulting column and divide the perimeter by the resulting value, thus obtaining the number of such columns in a complete installation. Next, we determine the total area of tiles of each type in such a column and multiply by the number of columns obtained in the previous step. And at the end, we already add 15 percent for marriage and fitting the pattern. This method is not very accurate, because it does not take into account that at the locations of windows and doors, the columns will be incomplete and an unequal number of different types of tiles will be excluded from them.

Another calculation option is more accurate. It is necessary to calculate at once the entire area on which the material of one type will be laid. The result obtained is divided by the area of one tile of the desired size and the number of tiles that will cover this area is obtained.

For this option of calculating the amount of tiles, it will be enough to take into account 10 percent for fitting and marriage.

Diverse product options

There is a tile of a rather complex shape in the form of flowers and various patterns. It is almost impossible to calculate the area of one such tile due to the combination of smooth lines with sharp corners and cutouts. Sometimes the manufacturer indicates on the packaging how much area one such tile covers, but often there is simply no such information. In order not to purchase such tiles "by eye", you should draw an exact plan of the room in which the installation will be carried out. Then carefully depict one such tile in the appropriate scale, after which you can draw a complete cladding according to the scheme that was originally chosen.

If only one color is used, then it remains just to count the resulting number of elements. If several colors are used, then you will have to color the drawing with the corresponding colors, and calculate how many tiles of a particular color will turn out. Then you need to add 10-15 percent for marriage and fitting.

This method is also used in the case of using a decor that differs in size from the main tile.

It is necessary to first apply decor elements to the diagram, and then determine how many main tiles will fit at the intersection with them, and subtract them from the total volume.

A separate calculation complexity appears when using tiles with facet. Facets are bevels located along the perimeter of the tile. Such products look more expressive and voluminous than ordinary flat squares. Facets look especially good on tiles that have a smooth mirror surface. A wall lined with such a tile will visually expand a small room and evenly scatter light around the perimeter. The difficulty lies in the fact that this type of tile cannot be cut so as not to spoil the appearance. The floor and corners of the room must be perfectly even, and the size of the material must be selected so that only the whole number of required squares of tiles is obtained.

When counting tiles by the piece, it is necessary to count all cut tiles in the corners or along the walls as whole. Otherwise, the risk increases that the planned material will not be enough for surface cladding.

Before laying the tiles, it is necessary to level the surface of the walls, floor and ceiling, if tiles are also laid on it. For this, various self-leveling mixtures and plaster solutions are used. First, all leveling work is done, all wet surfaces dry, and only then the area is measured.

For greater savings or to create an original bathroom design, only the “wet area” can be tiled. In places of constant contact of water with walls and floors, tiles are laid, and the rest of the surface is treated with moisture-resistant paint or plastic panels are mounted. In this case, for the calculation it is necessary to take only the area of this “wet zone”.

If the area of one square of tiles is not yet known, you can simply calculate the surface area that will be tiled. Most often, in stores, tiles are packaged in a pack covering an area of 0.5 m2 or 1 m2, so it will not be difficult to calculate how many packages are required.

Sometimes it is very difficult to imagine what your bathroom will look like after renovation. Many people, due to their way of thinking, are not able to see the tile and imagine how it will look in the room. Of course, you can look at the interior options offered by the manufacturer's designers and make one-on-one ... But this option is often not suitable, since the rooms in designer interiors rarely match real, typical bathrooms in size and shape.

How do you know if a particular tile is right for you or not? The first option is to arrange a meeting with the designer in one of the stores. With the help of specialized programs, according to your size, you will create a virtual layout of the tiles. Of the minuses - you will have to buy tiles in this store, you will spend a lot of time with the designer, because. people rarely understand each other from the first word. And the more tile options you consider, the more time you will spend.

The second option is to learn how to work with tile layout programs. Unfortunately, the programs are entirely paid, and it can take a lot of time to study them.

The third option is to use our service for self-layout tiles. It is absolutely free, it allows not only to visualize the color combinations of tiles, but also to calculate in detail the required amount, taking into account savings on trimming tiles. We will talk about how to make a tile layout in this service on this page.

To create a layout you will need:

  • Dimensions of all walls in the room
  • Doorway size. If the door is installed, then 10 cm must be added to the width of the door leaf, and 5 cm to the height.
  • Bath size. The length is usually equal to the length of the wall to which the bath adjoins. You also need width and height. The height of the bath, as a rule, is regulated by legs, so it is up to you to decide on the desired height.
  • Tile collection.

Starting layout creation

Go to the page of the collection you want to layout. Find the "Create layout" button on the page and click it. The tile layout program will start.

Appearance

At the top there are tabs that group the control and settings buttons.

Room parameters

Click on the button on the Room Settings tab. A dialog box will open allowing you to enter room size settings. Please note that if you change these settings, all entered data will be reset. Therefore, you need to enter them at the very beginning of working with the layout service. When entering the dimensions of the room, the walls of the room will be displayed in the work area in accordance with the entered dimensions. After setting the dimensions, using the zoom buttons, increase or decrease the scale of the layout to fit the screen size for a comfortable continuation of working with the layout.

Installation of objects

On the tab "Objects in the room" you can place a bathtub, a sink, a mirror, a door in your room. Clicking on the icons with the image of the object will open a dialog box for entering the dimensions and position of the object in the room. The input results will be displayed in the layout workspace.

Grid layout of tiles, installation of borders, mosaics

On the "Tile" tab, you can shift the tile layout grid, change the layout direction (vertically, horizontally), set borders and mosaics. The layout grid cell size is automatically calculated based on the base tile size.

  • Display direction (vertical or horizontal)

    Tiles can be laid both "lying" and "standing", if the pattern of decorative elements and the size of the borders allow it. To change the layout direction, click on the image of the wall on which you want to change the layout direction, and then click on the first button in the row with the image of two arrows. If the layout direction needs to be changed for all walls, then do this operation for each wall.

  • Grid shift, dimensions of the first tile, end tile, clipping control

    Beautiful tiling involves cutting the tiles evenly on the left and right sides, centering decorative elements, adjusting the joints to the height of the bathtub and much more. You can do all this by activating the wall by clicking on its image, and then using the arrow buttons (). The direction of the arrow image indicates in which direction the display grid will be shifted. Shift step - 1 cm.

  • Borders and mosaics

    Borders are narrow decorative elements, usually installed for a harmonious transition between tiles of different colors, as well as for zoning a room. The installation of borders within one wall must be the entire length or height of the wall, otherwise the geometry of the tile layout will be displaced, which is extremely ugly. Curbs are installed by pressing the button with the image of two solid vertical (for vertical, ) or horizontal lines (). When you click on the button, a dialog box opens in which you first select the number of the wall on which you want to install the curb, then select the curb in the list of available curbs, and then use the up and down arrow buttons to move the row with the curb up or down. When installing a mosaic (buttons and ) it is possible to set the width of the mosaic row.

Laying tiles

On the Layout tab, you set the tiles on your walls edited in the previous steps. Learn more about the features of this step and the controls:

  • Seam color change

    To improve the visual perception of the layout, you can change the color of the tile joint. To change, click on the "Seam color" button, and in the dialog box that opens, select the desired color. Unfortunately, the grout color cannot be changed for individual rows or tiles. You will immediately see the result in the workspace.

  • Wall background color

    To improve the visual perception of the layout, you can change the background color of the walls. For example, when tiles are solid gray, it's hard to see where you haven't tiled. By changing the background color to darker or lighter, you will immediately see empty areas of the layout. To change, click on the "Background color" button, and in the dialog box that opens, select the desired color.

  • Choosing tiles to install

    To select the tile you want to lay out, click on the "Select Tile" button. A dialog box will open with tile images. For convenience, tiles are divided into tabs with the names of tile types - Regular (base, background) tiles, Decors - tiles with a pattern and Panels - sets of tiles with a pattern that together form a complete pattern or composition. The choice of tiles is made by clicking on the image. The selected tile is displayed at the top of the service.

  • Rotate tiles 180 degrees

    In some cases, it is necessary to accurately indicate the direction of laying tiles with a pattern in order to beautifully join their pattern. For this, the option of flipping the tiles 180 degrees is provided. At the top of the service there is a checkbox with the inscription "Flip" (a field for setting a checkmark / birdie). With this option enabled, all installed tiles will be flipped 180 degrees in relation to its image.

  • The process of installing tiles on the walls

    After choosing a tile, simply move your mouse over the wall where you want to install the tile. Click the mouse in the right place, the tile image will be installed in this place. To cancel the installation, click in this place again - the tile will be removed.

  • Reflection of calculations

    In addition to visually displaying the location of tiles on the walls, the service also calculates the number of tiles used. Moreover, if, depending on the browser settings, there is a possibility of a slight distortion of the picture, then the calculations are completely based on the mathematical calculation of the coordinates of each object. You can view the calculations by clicking on the "Show calculations" button in the upper right corner. The results will be displayed in a summary table below the wall images. The table contains information on the number of whole tiles (C), cut vertically (Rv), horizontally (Rg), cut in two planes (Rvg), the actual laying area, the required amount for laying out.

    When calculating the required number of tiles, based on the optimal algorithm for the consumption of scraps, the number of whole tiles for laying out is calculated (in other words, stacking of scraps without overspending is taken into account). In the case of cutting tiles in two planes, the trimmings are considered unsuitable for use.

    You can independently check the correctness of the calculations by clicking the mouse in the calculation table in the cells with the number of required tiles - the tiles on the walls will be marked with a red fill. Clicking again will remove this fill.

Video instruction for creating a tile layout

Ask a question - get an answer!

Tile is the most suitable material for, but also quite expensive. Therefore, in order not to have to buy it in addition or throw away the excess, you need to correctly calculate the tiles for the bathroom, and for this we can use special or online calculation and layout programs.

The correct calculation of the tiles during the repair allows you to save not only the time spent on the purchase of missing materials, which, it is worth saying, may not be in the store, but also the money that will be spent on surpluses. And in order to avoid these troubles, there are several ways. A classic and accessible to everyone method of calculating the material on paper and a more modern and convenient one is laying tiles online.

But in each case there are certain nuances that need to be taken into account in order to calculate the material as accurately as possible.

The scheme of laying tiles is important in the further calculation of its quantity. Depending on the location of the seam between the tiles, several types of layouts are distinguished:

  • Standard or basic ("seam to seam").
  • Diagonal, herringbone, labyrinth, dressing, chess, run-up, carpet or modular layout, there are a lot of options.

How to properly position tiles?

From an aesthetic point of view, it is important to consider the layout method, the location of the decor and color combinations in accordance with the area of the room. Finishing can visually change the proportions of the room.
In order to visually enlarge the room, light-colored tiles are used, a horizontal laying method with a transverse placement of the pattern.

Bathroom tile options

You can increase the height by vertical layout, using contrasting stripes, vertical arrangement of friezes, and in this case it is better to place the decoded elements just above eye level. Dark-colored tiles will visually reduce the room. When choosing the color of floor tiles, it is important to consider that a dark floor and a light ceiling will visually enlarge the space, and vice versa.

It is important that the tile laying system be completed with a minimum amount of trimming. This will not only facilitate installation work, but also visually make the finish correct and more beautiful.

Trimming on the walls is placed symmetrically between the corners. On the floor, the drawing is laid out in such a way that solid elements are located in the visible zone, and all trimming goes to the least visible sides or is hidden under interior items. In the matter of design, online tile layout will be invaluable help, which will help create the most accurate visual model of the future finish.

Before performing the calculation of the tiles, it is important to make the correct measurement of the room. Perform it after the walls are prepared for laying tiles. Each side is always measured separately, even if the room is of the correct shape. Round the resulting value up. The size of the doorway, windows is subtracted from the total measurement. Sometimes areas that will not be finished, for example, hidden behind the bathroom, are also taken away from the total area.

We measure the area of walls and floors

When a room of complex configuration has protruding elements, niches or boxes, their measurements are taken separately. It is better to record all the results by drawing up a plan of the room on a scale, on which the location of plumbing, furniture and other interior details is noted. For a more accurate calculation, it is better to convert all numbers to millimeters.

Methods for calculating tiles

There is no single universal calculation scheme. In each individual case, it all depends on the features of the layout of the room, the size of the tile, and the layout of the tile in the bathroom is taken into account. And depending on this, choose the most suitable of the three calculation methods.

  • Project sketch;
  • Formula calculations;
  • Layout and calculation of tiles in the bathroom using a computer program.

Important! It is worth considering that in case of errors in the calculations, it can be problematic to buy additional tiles, because different batches of the same collection often have visible differences in shades, ornament geometry and some other technical parameters.

Sketching and piece-by-piece calculation of tiles

The most reliable results can be obtained by sketching the project on paper. For these purposes, any ordinary notebook sheet in a cage or on graph paper is suitable. The room is drawn to scale, each wall and floor separately. They mark the location of the tile, starting from its size and method of installation. Tiles of various shades, decorative elements, if used, the frieze is shaded with colored pencils for convenience. Such a project will allow not only to imagine how the room will look after finishing, but also to accurately calculate the amount of material piece by piece.

Formula calculations

In this case, the amount of material is determined based on the size of the room and the material. Let's say you need to calculate the number of tiles to cover the floor of a standard bath. To do this, you need to know the total quadrature of the bathroom, which is calculated using standard geometric formulas, for example: 1.73 × 1.73 = 3.46 m2, round the resulting number up, we get an area of 3.5 m2. Next, you need to find out the area of one floor tile: 0.335 × 0.335 = 0.112 m2. Next, we calculate how many whole tiles will be needed to cover the entire area: 3.5 / 0.112 = 31.2 pcs. We round the quantity to 32 and add 10% for marriage and trimming, in the case of a diagonal layout - 15%. The total is 35 or 37 tiles, respectively.

This method is used if the layout of the tiles in the bathroom is standard, and the individual elements do not differ in size. With non-standard laying methods, the number of tiles can be calculated only by drawing the project to scale. Or through special services, if the program for laying out tiles suggests the possibility of such placement of finishing elements. You can more accurately about the calculation of tiles.

for walls

wall tiles

As a rule, wall decoration is done in two shades, which are separated by a border, so first, you need to determine the height of each layer. At the same time, in the lower dark layer, it is better not to trim, that is, its height will be a multiple of the height of the tile. Depending on the size of the tile, lay out 3-4 rows. The height of the border will be different from the height of the tile used for this. The rest of the wall height is a light layer.

The dark band is calculated. The perimeter of the bathroom is multiplied by the height of the dark layer and its area is found out. The resulting number is divided by the area of one dark tile and its quantity is determined. Add 10% for pruning, fight and marriage.

In a similar way, light tiles are calculated. The wall area for a light finish is divided by the already known area of one tile and the amount of light-colored ceramics is obtained. Add 10%.

Count the curb elements. To do this, the perimeter of the room is divided by the length of the curb element. From the resulting number, subtract the part that comes to the doorway. Results are always rounded up to a multiple of a whole unit or half, since halves are also used, for example, at the corners.

For floor

Depending on the layout method and the configuration of the room, the most convenient method is chosen.

Bathroom floor tiles

By total area. They find out the total area of the floor of the room, without subtracting the box and niche, and divide it by the area of one tile. Thus, they will find out how many tiles will be required in order to lay a given surface. 10% is added to the resulting number, which will be spent on trimming and insurance against marriage or damage to the material. The number is rounded up. The error in this method of calculation can be quite significant.
On both sides. First, find out how many tiles will be laid along each of the walls.

To do this, the length of the wall is divided by the length of the side of one tile that corresponds to it. The same count is carried out with the other wall and side of the tile. Thus, it is determined how many tiles are laid in one row along one and the other wall. The resulting figures are multiplied among themselves, add a margin - 10% and get the total amount.

If the layout of the floor tiles in the bathroom is made diagonally, the calculation is performed in the same way, but it is recommended to add not the standard 10%, but 15% to the stock.

Online calculator

You can also use our online tile calculator, this calculator has the ability to calculate not only the quantity but the cost of the tile.

Computer programs.

Modern computer programs make counting tiles simple and convenient, provided they are used correctly.

Programs for calculating tiles in the bathroom

Services that help in calculations can be conditionally divided into two types: an online tile layout program and calculators for counting tiles. You can work in programs online or after installing them on your computer. Some of them are paid, but their functions and capabilities are significantly higher than the free versions. The tile calculation program allows the user to perform a number of actions:

  • Lay out the tiles in a 3d model and thereby create a semblance of a bathroom finish in the future;
  • Calculate the amount of finishing material and the consumption of adhesive for tiles;
  • In the programs, you can adjust trimming and choose tiles from different collections.

Simplified versions for calculating tiles - calculators. These are small programs, usually online versions, that calculate the material based on the data entered by the user for an already finished project. It should be borne in mind that it is possible to calculate bathroom tiles on a calculator only if all the finishing elements are the same size.

Calculate the amount of consumables

The tile is usually put on the glue in a seam way, which means that the repair will require the adhesive mixture itself, the grout, and the installation crosses, which will regulate the thickness of the seam, as a rule, they purchase only one package with a minimum quantity of 50 pieces. The consumption of a certain tile adhesive and the amount of grout are pre-calculated.

The consumption of tile adhesive is influenced by a number of factors, among which the most significant is the evenness of the base. Also, the thickness of the adhesive base increases depending on the size of the tile, the smaller it is, the smaller the adhesive layer will hold it. For tiles, cement mixtures, dispersion adhesives or epoxy-based mixtures are used. They are applied with a notched trowel. At the same time, if its teeth are pointed, less glue is required than when working with a spatula with square teeth.
In order to find out the approximate consumption of tile adhesive, multiply half the height of the tile by the average consumption of the selected adhesive mixture and the area to be covered.
The best way to calculate is to use online calculators. They give the most accurate results based on tile, substrate, tool, working conditions and selected adhesive.

Average consumption of material on the example of Ceresit glue

Grout for joints

In order to calculate the required amount, you need to know the volume of the space to be filled, but if the thickness of the seam is known, then it becomes difficult to determine its depth. As a rule, it depends not only on the thickness of the tile, it is important to take into account the thickness of the adhesive mixture and what percentage of the grout will go under the tile. All these indicators are relative, so it will not be possible to accurately calculate the material. The amount of grout is taken based on its consumption indicated on the package and 10-15% is added.
You can also use our online grout calculator, which accurately calculates the material according to the specified parameters. The program algorithms calculate the ideal value, so it is recommended to add 10% to the result. (votes: 7 , average rating: 4,43 out of 5)

Repairing a bathroom, and indeed any room, is always a troublesome, costly, time-consuming task. To do this, it is necessary to prepare a large number of various tools, materials, select them in accordance with certain requirements. In addition, you need to take into account the design of the apartment so that the space being equipped does not fall out of the general idea, unless, of course, this was originally planned.

In order to carry out finishing work, it is necessary to calculate the exact amount of materials required. Moreover, you should buy the entire norm of products and even with a margin, since another batch of products is likely to differ in tone or texture, which is very ugly.

Under the finish in the bathroom choose tiles. It has a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, suitable for laying the floor and wall. The number of products that will be needed will depend on these parameters. So, how to calculate how many tiles you need?

Tile selection

Before calculating the required number of products, it is necessary to determine their characteristics. The bathroom differs from other rooms in an increased level of humidity, which makes the requirements for finishing materials quite high.

When purchasing a tile, you should take into account its properties, which it should have especially for flooring:

  • abrasion resistance;
  • high strength;
  • resistance to temperature extremes;
  • moisture resistance;
  • resistance to household chemicals;
  • resistance to abrasive agents.

First step

Before you start calculating the number of bathroom tiles, it is best to carefully measure the room by recording the data obtained. This will help the usual tape measure or rangefinder, which are available in every store.

The measurement takes place in two planes: the height and width of the walls. If they have the correct shape, then it is enough to take 2-3 measurements. In the event that there are protrusions or depressions, then they should be measured separately.

In addition, you need to know the exact proportions of the door and if there are window openings. This will allow you to more accurately calculate the required material. Experts even recommend drawing up a plan of the room, where the position of the plumbing, the total area, the parameters of the wall and floor are noted. As a result, this approach will give a more complete picture of what is happening and help to make accurate calculations.

Worth remembering! If the walls in the bathroom seem even, then this is not always true. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out several control measurements in order to avoid errors in the calculations.

We determine the amount of material. Method #1

The first indicators are achieved by multiplying the length by the width and are removed from the floor area. By analogy, the area of one tile product is calculated, and the data obtained are rounded up.

Having received two approximate numbers, we divide the floor area by the area of ceramics, and the resulting value is rounded up to a larger integer. Thus, we have a certain number to which we need to add 5%, i.e. multiply by 1.05, and the result is rounded up.

For clarity, it is necessary to calculate on an example, where we take the average statistical data. The initial ceiling is 2.70 m, the walls are 1.9 and 2.0 m, the door width is 0.7 m. If the conditional dimensions of the floor tiles are 35 by 35 cm, then the calculation will be as follows:

  • 1.9*2.0=3.8 m2;
  • 0.35*0.35=0.1225 m2;
  • 3.8 m2 / 0.1225 m2 = 31 pcs.;
  • 31 * 1.05 = 32.55, which means you need about 33 tiles.

Method #2

The calculation of the number of ceramic products that will be laid on the floor is carried out due to the length and width. To do this, you need to divide each of these floor parameters by a similar tile value. The data obtained are multiplied, after which we round them up and add 5% again. Here is an example calculation:

  1. 1.9/0.35=5.42 pieces;
  2. 2.0/0.35=5.71 pieces;
  3. 5.42*5.71=30.96 pieces;
  4. 31*1.05=32.55, i.e. you need about 33 tiles.

Bathroom tile plan

Need to know! Usually managers in specialized stores prefer to use the first method to determine the exact amount of material.

We determine the number of products per wall. Method #1

Under the facing of the wall surface, we need a certain number of tiles. To do this, we calculate the perimeter of the entire room. We add the length of each wall separately, after which we add together the length with the width and multiply all this by 2. (1.9 + 2.0) * 2 = 7.6 m.

Then subtract the width of the doorway from the perimeter, and divide the resulting integer by the length of the frieze. (7.6-0.7)/0.2= 34.5 pcs. Here, the standard tile size of 200 × 400 mm is taken as the basis, and the dimensions of the frieze are 200 × 80 mm. After that, the value is multiplied by 5%, where the result is displayed in 36 tiles.

Method #2

The following method allows you to find out the exact number of products required per sq. meter. This technique is proven and suitable for laying on any surface of various sizes. First you need to calculate the total area of the bathroom by adding the length of each wall, after which the resulting value is multiplied by the height of the bathroom.

Let's look at an example, let's say the height is 2, the length is 3, the width is 2.5. Then 3+3+2.5+2.5=11m. The next step is to multiply the perimeter by the height: 11 × 2 = 22 square meters. meters - area. From it we subtract the space occupied by the door and window opening, of course, if they are available.

Let's say we got the number 20 square meters. meters. Then we find the total area of one ceramic product. Conventionally, 0.4 × 0.2 m, we get 0.08 sq. meters. Now it remains just to calculate the values. For this 20 sq. m/0.08 sq. m. = 250 pieces, while adding about 5-10% as a reserve of tiles.

It is with the above methods that you can accurately calculate the required number of tiles that will be required for a wall or floor. However, there are other techniques, known somewhat less than the examples shown. Thus, it remains only to use the knowledge gained and independently carry out all the calculations.

Video instruction

A preliminary calculation will allow you to plan the renovation budget and think about the design of the bathroom in detail. If you correctly calculate the number of tiles, you will not have to buy additional material during the finishing process.

To measure the room, you must use a tape measure. The most accurate values can be obtained with a laser device. Having found out the parameters of the bathroom (the height and length of the walls, the size of the doorway), you can make preliminary calculations of the number of tiles. The easiest option is when the room has the shape of a rectangle or square. In this case, the minimum number of walls must be measured.

If the bathroom has a complex shape, it is necessary to carefully measure all the protruding elements, take into account the existing niches.

The results must be recorded on the diagram, so it will be easier to calculate the materials. A drawing made to scale will also allow you to take into account all the details of the design of the bathroom, and correctly plan the arrangement of furniture. The calculation algorithm is influenced by the type of laying of floor tiles (diagonally, rectangular, rhombus, etc.).

2. Basic rules for calculating tiles

The calculation algorithm is quite simple. When calculating the exact number of tiles, you will need formulas for determining the perimeter and area of the rectangle.

To calculate the wall area, use the following formula:

Parameters A and B (width and length of the room) alternate depending on the specific area.

The perimeter of a rectangle is calculated by the formula:

P = (B + A) * 2.

Designations in formulas:

  • S - the area of a certain surface in the bathroom, sq.m;
  • P - designation of the perimeter of the room, m;
  • A - bathroom width parameter, m;
  • B - dimension of the length of the room;
  • H is the height of the wall.

Calculation scheme:

  • The total area of the room is obtained by adding the square meters of the individual walls of the bathroom;
  • Then, from the obtained value, one should subtract those areas that will not be tiled, for example, the area of the doorway to the room, or the window.

In order to reduce material consumption, the cladding is not done in the space under the bathroom. This option is possible if you plan to install a decorative screen. In this case, the height of the room for calculation is measured from the top level of the side.

Some sites provide a special calculator that allows you to determine the required amount of material for the purchase. With the help of such programs, it is possible to facilitate the task when calculating the amount of material if tiles of different shades are combined.

3. Calculation of bathroom tiles with a total area of 4 sq.m.

The main dimensions of this room:

  • Wall with an opening - 2150 mm;
  • Short wall length - 1900 mm;
  • Doorway - 700x2000 mm;
  • Room height - 2700 mm.

Dimensions of the selected collection of bathroom tiles:

  • White wall tiles - 500x250 mm;
  • Green wall tiles - 500x250 mm;
  • Decor - 500x250 mm;
  • Green floor tiles - 500x500 mm.

Cladding plan

Tiles designed for flooring are laid in one tone. White tiles are planned on the wall with the door. The rest of the wall surfaces are supposed to be done with alternating colors in vertical stripes, as well as adding decor.

Calculation of floor tiles

We determine the parameter of the area of one tile: S = 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25 sq.m;

  • Total floor area: S = 4 sq.m;
  • Calculation of the number of tile elements for the entire floor area: 4 / 0.25 = 16 pieces.

Calculation of tiles for bathroom walls

Wall decoration elements have the same format (width and height).

  • One of the walls (with an opening) is tiled with white tiles, we calculate its area without a door: S = (2.15x2.7) - (0.7x2) = 5.805 - 1.4 = 4.405 sq.m;
  • The area of one tile for the wall: S = 0.5 x 0.25 = 0.125 sq.m;
  • The number of white tiles for a wall with an opening: 4.405 / 0.125 = 36 pieces (round the number up);

Consider another calculation method that is suitable for surfaces with tiles of different colors.

  • Number of tiles in width for other walls:
    1.9 m: 1.9 / 0.5 = 3.8 pieces;
    2.15 m: 2.15 / 0.5 = 4.3 pieces;
  • The number of tiles along the perimeter of three walls: (3.8 x 2) +4.3 = 11.9 pieces;
  • We calculate how many elements fit in height: 2.7 / 0.25 = 10.8 pieces.
    This value can be rounded down if a stretch ceiling is planned;
  • In this example, stripes of tiles of different colors are oriented vertically.
    Laying green tiles is planned in 8 vertical rows, taking into account the decor elements: (8 x 10.8) - 4 = 86.4 - 4 = 83 pieces;
  • The number of white tiles for three walls in width: 11.9 - 8 = 4 pieces.
    For three walls in total: 4 x 10.8 = 44 pieces.

Total volume values of tiles for bathroom walls

White tiles: (36+44) = 80 pieces;
. Green tiles: 83 pieces;
. Decor: 4 pieces.

When calculating the number of tiles, it is better to take into account the safety factor. In case of damage to the material, residues can be used, without discrepancies in shades.
