Plastic windows in a wooden house: 15 problems and 15 solutions

Is it possible to install plastic windows in a wooden house? What are the criteria for choosing a profile, fittings and a double-glazed window? How to install windows and how to maintain them during operation? In my article I will try to answer these and some other questions.

Why plastic

  1. Is it worth installing PVC windows or is it worth taking a closer look at wooden frames?

In my opinion, wooden frames have no advantages over plastic ones, except for a more respectable appearance.

This argument for wood is also pretty dubious. The metal-plastic frames, pasted over at the factory with a textured film, very faithfully depict wood, while they are devoid of all its disadvantages.

What exactly are modern wooden frames losing to plastic ones?

  • Resistant to aggressive detergents. Plastic can be washed with compounds based on alkalis and acids, which can remove absolutely any dirt. Wood, despite the protective impregnation, does not allow such liberties: the surface of wooden frames can only be wiped with a sponge moistened with soapy water;

  • Resistant to mechanical stress. Chips on a tree are not uncommon, but damage to a metal-plastic profile can only be done on purpose;
  • Finally, the main thing: the price of a wooden window is one and a half times higher, even if its frame is made of inexpensive conifers. Noble wood species (beech, oak, ash, cedar) increase the already rather big cost at least twice.

How to choose

Before discussing how to install a window, let's decide on its choice.

Sizes and number of leaves

  1. What are the standard window sizes in wooden houses?

In multi-apartment wooden buildings built during the USSR, standard wooden window blocks made of wood, produced in accordance with GOST 11214-86, were used. The dimensions of the window units are easy to find in the text of the document. For the convenience of the reader, I will present them here:

Height / width, mm 510 870 1170 1320 1470 1770 2070
560 + +
860 + + + +
1160 + + + +
1460 + + + + + + +
1760 + + +

When choosing the number of sashes, it is worth remembering a simple rule: the width of the opening sash should not exceed 70-80 centimeters. Otherwise, under the weight of the glass unit, it will inevitably sag in one or two years of operation and will rub over the frame.

Another instruction is related to the position of the opening sash. In a tricuspid window, it should be in the middle; alternatively, you can choose a window with two opening sashes at the edges and one blind in the middle. Such a window block device will give you the opportunity to wash the glass of blind sashes from the outside, without putting yourself in danger of falling out of the window.

Profile

  1. Which window profile is better?

In my opinion, the choice of profile has a minimal effect on the performance of windows. All profiles currently offered on the Russian market are made of high-quality polyvinyl chloride resistant to UV, low and high temperatures. The days when cheap Chinese plastic turned yellow and became fragile a couple of years after installation are long gone: no one needs problems with customers.

The only any weighty argument that can be cited in favor of expensive profiles from German manufacturers (primarily the widely advertised KBE and Rehau) is their somewhat higher rigidity, the ability to withstand significant bending stress without deformation. However, rigidity is important only in very specific conditions - with a large area and under conditions of significant wind loads.

By the way: two panoramic windows in my attic (13 square meters each) are assembled on an inexpensive Chinese Hauteck profile. They perfectly tolerate the strong winter winds characteristic of Sevastopol. With strong gusts of wind, only slight vibration of the glazing is noticeable.

When choosing a profile for a region with cold winters, you should pay attention to the number of isolated air chambers in it. The more there are, the less heat will be lost through the window frames due to air convection.

Fittings

  1. Who makes the best fittings?

In my opinion, Siegenia-Aubi fittings are the most reliable. After a thoughtful study of the reviews, I opted for it and never regretted my choice. In addition to this manufacturer, Roto, Maco and Winkhaus fittings deserve flattering reviews.

When choosing a set of fittings, you should pay attention to several points related to its functionality:

  • For the presence of a microlift. It is especially important for large sash widths. A microlift in relation to window fittings is a simple device that lifts the edge of the sash far from the hinges when it is closed;

  • The sash is pressed not only by the central lock, but also by rollers located along its perimeter. The central locking cannot ensure the complete tightness of the window: above and below from under the seal there will always be blowing, the rollers will press it down along the entire length;
  • It is desirable that the pressure rollers are eccentric and have a summer-winter position. Turning the roller to the winter position increases the clamping of the sash, in the summer it weakens it. This allows you to compensate for a small change in the linear dimensions of the seal and the sash itself during seasonal fluctuations in street temperature;

  • The transom mode (when the sash not only turns on its hinges, but also leans towards the room) allows you to ventilate the house in rainy weather without fear of puddles on the windowsill. In addition, it will serve as a good protection against unauthorized travel of your cat on the window tide;
  • Finally, the micro-ventilation mode is very practical (the ability to fix the sash slightly open a few millimeters by turning the handle). It will allow you to enjoy the fresh air in winter without any cold drafts.

Double-glazed windows

  1. How many cameras should a double-glazed window have?

The answer depends on the climatic zone in which you live:

  • In the south of the country, the greatest demand is for single-chamber double-glazed windows (with two glasses);
  • The center of Russia, Siberia and the Far East with their moderately cold winters (up to 30-40 degrees below zero) are more demanding in terms of thermal insulation. They usually install windows with two-chamber packages;

  • In the coldest regions (in Yakutia and Chukotka, with their winter temperatures up to -60C), the number of glazing threads increases to four.
  1. What is an energy-saving glass unit?

One of the glasses in it is supplied with a thin (only a few molecules thick) multilayer metal sputtering that reflects light in the infrared part of the spectrum (corresponding to thermal radiation).

What it gives:

  • In winter, when the temperature in the house is higher than outside, the coating reflects infrared radiation towards the interior, thereby reducing heat loss through the glazing;
  • In the summer, it prevents the room from being overheated by direct sunlight.

  1. How effective is energy-saving glazing?

Here are a couple of curious facts related to its direct functions:

  • A single-chamber energy-saving glass unit allows 25-40% less heat to pass in comparison with a two-chamber glass unit with ordinary glass. Moreover, the cost of both double-glazed windows is approximately the same;

In addition: triple glazing is one and a half times heavier than double, which means a greater load on the profile and faster sagging of the opening sashes.

  • A two-chamber double-glazed unit with two energy-saving glasses in terms of resistance to heat transfer is 40% higher than a masonry of two bricks.

  1. What other types of double-glazed windows exist?

Light-shielding glazing has limited transmission to light in the visible part of the spectrum. It is popular in regions with long sunny summers. A light-protective glass unit will also come in handy in a room with panoramic glazing on the south side of the house.

Mirror glass differs from light-shielding glass in that its translucency changes depending on the direction of light transmission. Simply put, you can see the street from the house, but you can't see the interior of the house from the street.

Don't flatter yourself: mirrored glazing is impenetrable to view from the street only as long as it is lighter on it than in the house. In the evening, when the lights are on, the picture changes.

A noise-insulating glass unit combines several glasses of different thicknesses (as a rule, 4 and 6 mm). The thickness of the spacers separating the glasses in the package also varies. Thanks to this structure, the glazing dampens sound in the widest possible frequency spectrum.

Installation

Now - about how to insert a plastic window in a wooden house.

Problems

  1. What are the features of installing plastic windows in a wooden house you need to consider?

The installation technology is very different from the order of installation of a window block in a brick or panel house. The differences are due to the fact that wooden structures do not have constant dimensions and geometry:

  • After construction, the house shrinks, which in the first year can reach 10 percent or more of the building's height. After a year, the shrinkage slows down, but does not stop: the relatively stable height of the walls and openings is made only after five years from the date of construction;

  • The installation of windows in a wooden frame is also complicated by the fact that the edges of the crowns in the opening must be tied together, excluding their displacement in the horizontal plane;
  • Finally, the linear dimensions of wooden structures continuously vary within small limits with fluctuations in humidity. You've probably noticed that in rainy weather, the wooden door starts to overwrite the jambs, and in dry weather it closes freely? This is due precisely to the ability of wood to absorb moisture from the air, increasing in volume.

Hence, the basic rules for installing windows follow:

  • A window box needs a strong strapping (it is called a casing or a jamb), which will not allow the logs or logs to crush the window and fix the crowns, preventing them from moving relative to the plane of the wall;
  • A shrinkage joint is required between the casing and the top of the window opening. After installing the window block, it is filled with a soft insulation and covered with platbands on both sides.

Operations

  1. In what order is the installation of plastic windows in a wooden house carried out with your own hands?

If there is no opening in the wall, the order of installing the window is as follows:

  • An opening is marked in the wall and cut out with a saber saw;

The lower edge of the opening in a log structure should not fall on the top of the crown, but in its middle. Agree that installing a window sill on a round log is quite problematic.

  • The side ends of the opening are marked for the spike cut. The thickness of the spike should be approximately equal to one third of the thickness of the casing;
  • The thorn is cut with the same reciprocating saw;
  • Log crowns are trimmed to fit the platband (a side chamfer is removed at the middle of each log);
  • The cutouts for the platbands are leveled with a grinder with a flap grinding wheel;
  • The opening is treated with an antiseptic impregnation for wood;

  • A window-sill board with cutouts for connection with the casing posts is laid on a jute substrate;
  • The same jute cloth is attached to the ends of the opening over the thorn with a stapler;
  • The sowing is collected in the opening on thorns coated with wood glue (casein, albumin, PVA or liquid nails). The top of the casing should be at least 7 - 8 centimeters from the top of the window opening;

  • A window block with removed shutters is installed in the casing. How to install and secure it? The block can be fixed in the casing with several self-tapping screws screwed through the holes pre-drilled in the frame, after which the seam between the frame and the casing is foamed. Often, a window exposed on spacers is attached only to polyurethane foam;

Hint: correct installation of the window block is possible only if there is a gap of 1.5 - 2 centimeters between it and the casing. Foam mounting allows the joint to compensate for slight deformation of walls and casing due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

  • After foaming the seam and setting the polyurethane foam (it takes no more than an hour), the sashes are installed in the window block. After installing the opening sash, do not forget to check its free movement and, if necessary, adjust the fittings;
  • Excess foam protruding beyond the frame is cut off, after which the seam is glued from the street side with aluminum tape;
  • The shrinkage gap above the casing is filled with insulation - mineral wool or jute cloth folded several times;
  • The seam between the casing and the opening is caulked with jute from the inside;
  • On the inner side of the log crowns, they are removed with a plane and the flats are polished under the casing;
  • The ebb installation technology is quite standard - it sits on the foam and is attached to the window block with several galvanized self-tapping screws;
  • A plastic window sill is also placed on the foam and loaded while it sets;

  • Last but not least, finishing is done on the outside and inside with platbands - plastic or wooden.

Replacing windows with plastic ones in a wooden house is carried out, as a rule, without replacing the window: only the window block changes. If the planting is in good condition, it is enough to grind it with a grinder with a flap wheel and re-treat it with a protective impregnation with an antiseptic.

With a large wall thickness, the slopes of the opening need additional finishing. As a rule, they are covered with a wide board or are assembled from a wooden lining.

Service

  1. How to install plastic windows - we figured it out; how to serve them?

Everything is very simple. Maintenance is only required for the rubber seal, and then only twice a year: it is lubricated along its entire length with a special silicone grease or ... ordinary castor oil, which can be bought at any pharmacy. The lubricant will prevent the rubber from drying out and cracking.

Also: do not forget to set the pressure rollers to the summer position in the spring and to the winter position in the fall. The seal pressed in the warm season with excessive force will quickly lose its original shape, and in winter it will see through from under the sash.

Adjustment

  1. How to raise a sagging window sash?

The adjusting screw responsible for changing the vertical position of the sash is located in the lower hinge. The head of the screw is for a hexagon; You can find a universal wrench with a set of hex keys at any bike store.

Another screw in the lower hinge is located horizontally, on the side of the sash. Its rotation will eliminate the skew or bring the sash closer to the frame from the side of the lock. The latter is necessary in the case when the pressure rollers in severe frosts ceased to cling to the counterparts of the lock due to a change in the linear dimensions of the sash.

Micro-ventilation

  1. Is it possible to equip an already installed window with a micro-ventilation system?

Easy. To do this, it is enough to buy a window clamp-comb. The cost of this simple device is only 100 - 150 rubles.

Window retainer - comb.

Its self-installation will not cause you any problems:

  • Lift the decorative strip under the handle of the window lock and rotate it 90 degrees;
  • Unscrew a couple of screws under the cover;
  • Pulling towards you, remove the handle;
  • Install the counterpart of the retainer, and then the handle;
  • Tighten the screws and put the cover in the working position;
  • Fasten the hinge with a comb to the frame with two galvanized self-tapping screws 16x4 mm. The hinge should be screwed just above the handle: in this case, the pin of the counterpart of the retainer will not jump out of the groove of the comb for any tilt of the sash in transom mode.

Glass unit replacement

  1. Is it possible to replace a double-glazed window on your own (when changing its configuration, for applying a light-protective film, or if the window has been broken)?

Yes, it's not difficult:

  • Pry one of the vertical glazing beads with a chisel, knife blade or hard steel trowel;

  • Pull it out towards the center of the glass unit;
  • Repeat the operation with the rest of the glazing beads. Remove the top one last: it will hold the glazing in the frame until the last moment;
  • Remove the glass unit from the sash.

How to insert a glass unit into a frame? It's also very simple:

  • Set it up in the frame on the plastic pads it used to stand on;

In the opening sash, the pads must be installed under the glass unit from the side of the hinges, as well as between the top of the package and the side profile from the side of the lock. They are needed in order to eliminate skewing and relieve the profile of the bottom of the sash.

  • Press the upper glazing bead into the frame and hammer it all the way in with light blows of a rubber mallet;

Hint: in its absence, you can use a regular hammer with a bar or thick plywood spacer.

  • Repeat the operation with the rest of the glazing beads;
  • Place the long side bead last in place. First, you need to press its edges into the frame, then hammer in the middle.

Thermal curtain

  1. How to create a thermal curtain in front of a French window?

For obvious reasons, in this case, it is impossible to install a radiator in the window sill niche - it simply does not exist. But the problem has several other solutions:

  • Installation of a heating skirting board along the window (a convector with a height of 13 - 20 cm with a decorative screen);

  • Installation of a floor convector or fan coil (convector with blower fan);
  • Low (200 - 350 mm) radiator on floor brackets;
  • Finally, in my attic and in the nursery, a thermal curtain is created by the internal blocks of split systems installed on the side wall. Actually, they completely heat the premises (fortunately, the mild climate of Crimea allows this).

Conclusion

I hope that my simple recommendations will help the dear reader in choosing and installing windows in his own home. As usual, additional material can be found in the video in this article. I would be grateful for your comments and additions. Good luck, comrades!

Plastic double-glazed windows have better characteristics than wooden structures. Due to their high performance indicators, such windows are actively used in both concrete and wooden buildings.

Installation of plastic windows in a wooden house differs from installation in concrete and block buildings. The technology consists of long-term preparation, the main purpose of which is to prevent the destruction of the glass unit from shrinkage of the house. During work, you need to follow certain rules that will help extend the life of the structure.

Mounting

The installation of a double-glazed window, regardless of the age of the house, is practically indistinguishable. In both cases, installation begins with the casing. It is this structure that protects the window from destruction in the process of shrinkage and natural expansion of the wood.

The installation of plastic structures requires specific skills and knowledge from the master, without which the work cannot be carried out. If you have no experience in joinery work, it is better to turn to professionals. The main difficulty in assembling the casing for the window is the assembly of the tongue-and-groove lock. It is this fastening that ensures reliable connection of parts and protection of the frame from deformations.

The shrinkage of an ordinary wooden house can reach 20-30 cm, which is noticeable when using structures made of metal and plastic, the shape of which does not change over time. The amount of shrinkage depends on the type of wood. So the average shrinkage a year after the assembly of the log house is:

  • for log houses 50-60 mm;
  • buildings from a bar 30-30 mm;
  • buildings made of laminated veneer lumber 15-30 mm.

These indicators are small, but they should be taken into account. The shrinkage of the building in the first year of the felling can lead to the squeezing of windows by the upper crowns of partitions and walls.

The shrinkage of a building lasts up to 5 years, depending on the humidity of the air, the size of the house and the season. But even after 5 years, the house still “breathes”, and therefore PVC products are installed in old buildings with casing.

Preparatory stage

To figure out how to install plastic windows in a wooden house, you will need to follow certain instructions. Before assembly, the following work must be carried out:

  • disassembly and removal of the old structure (for old houses);
  • cleaning the opening from dust, chips and old paint;
  • taking measurements of the opening and calculating the dimensions of the future window;
  • preparation of a diagram or drawing;
  • alignment of the walls of the opening in case of violation of symmetry;
  • for leveling, use a primer, sealant and putty;
  • choice of the view of the future window (sash format, material color and size of the entire structure);
  • definition of the firm of the product.

When all the works described above are completed, they order a window according to the dimensions of the opening. There are several features of the installation of plastic products.

Installation of the structure

After delivery, the window must be kept at room temperature. For installation you need to:

  • screwdriver and drill bits;
  • mallet and chisel;
  • anchor fasteners;
  • wedges for spacers;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • key for PVC windows;
  • pliers;
    level and tape measure.

The installation of a plastic window in a wooden house is carried out in pairs, since it is more convenient to lift it and fasteners together. The weight and size of the glass unit does not allow it to be carried alone.

Note! It is recommended to install PVC windows in calm and warm weather (above minus 10).

Functions and types of casing structures

Casing is called a box of planks installed around the window along the perimeter of the opening. The structure device allows you to mount it yourself so that it "floats" inside the log house and does not depend on the shrinkage of the building. To fasten the casing to the frame, grooves are used, they are placed on the sides of the window opening. The casing itself is seated at the ends on the spikes.

To prevent the casing from being blown through in winter, it is fixed with tow, linen or fiber compactor.

A small gap is left in the upper part of the casing, which maintains the integrity of the structure during shrinkage. After assembling such a frame, the movements of the log house do not affect the window in any way, and most importantly, shrinkage will not be able to harm the structure of the glass unit.

In this case, the walls will shrink, and the window will not be damaged. Discussions are divided into several types, depending on the types of attachment:

  • In the mortgage bar. The fastening is based on a bar placed in a groove in the ends of the opening. In addition, it passes through the casing posts.
  • Into the thorn. Such structures have a special spike that is installed on the side elements of the casing. The groove is in the logs of the opening.
  • Into the deck. The thorn in this case is located at the ends of the logs. There is a groove in the uprights of the casing.

The box is a floating mechanism, during the installation of which deformation of the plastic window is impossible. Do-it-yourself installation of wooden windows is carried out using a different technology.

It is necessary to carry out calculations very accurately, because even with a slight error, the risk of deformation of the box will increase. In addition, the structure may be leaky. Correct installation of the box is a prerequisite for the quality of the window service.

Execution of the squash

There are simple and complex jigs. Each of these types of construction has its own advantages. For example, a simple window is quickly erected, and a complex one eliminates vertical deformation of the window. When creating a simple window, the option already described in the article is selected - using grooves and bars.

A complex system requires cutting a ridge in the opening. A carriage with grooves is put on it. This design option is more reliable. During the shrinkage of the house, the ridge is shifted in such a way that vertical deviations of the plastic structure are excluded.

The casing is made of bars. Using a chisel, it is necessary to knock out a groove in the center of the timber with dimensions of 0.5x0.5 cm.One of the important points is to do the marking of the ridge with your own hands. How high-quality it turns out, the design of the window, will depend on the accuracy of the markings performed.

When the ridge is ready, you need to start forming the opening. The bars should be installed using a level. This takes into account the shrinkage gap. It is 0.5 cm at the top and 1 cm on each side. The frame, which is made of beams, is best strengthened using dowels. The resulting cracks are sealed with tow. Then we install the plastic frame.

Installing the plastic frame

After preparing and installing the window, you should start installing the plastic structure. Mounting a window without casing is a mistake. The parallels should be checked first. The gaps between the frame and the PVC glass unit are determined. For foaming, leave 3 cm on the side and about 5 cm on top. Then you can start directly installing PVC windows in a wooden house.

The structure must be attached to the designated place on special elements. They can be purchased at every construction equipment store. Such fasteners are metal plates with holes.

Advice! It is better to use special fasteners, because the use of self-tapping screws does not ensure the tightness and thermal insulation of the structure.

Installation of a plastic window is carried out with a level. If this rule is not met, the design may turn out to be tilted. This circumstance can significantly reduce the aesthetic appearance of the window and its performance.

Advice! Before installing the structure, the sashes must be removed. This will make the window lighter, which will have a beneficial effect on the ease of installation.

After fixing the window in the opening, the formed gap should be foamed. For reliable fixation of the installed structure, a bar is used. This will avoid shifting the window during foaming. When the foam dries, they should be removed. Care should be taken when installing windows in a wooden house in a casing. In this case, you will have to determine the correct mounting position of the screws. Do not fix the window in the area of the ridge.

This completes the window installation process. Now it remains to put on the sash and let the foam dry. This method of installing a plastic structure in the country is correct. If you are not confident in your own abilities, you should call professionals. However, self-installation of a PVC window is a significant cost saving. To do the job as efficiently as possible, you need to follow the instructions.

conclusions

The installation of a plastic structure in a wooden house is done with your own hands as simply as possible. To do this, you will need to perform accurate calculations and prepare a specific set of tools. All work is carried out as carefully as possible. This is necessary for the long service life of the glass unit.

During work, it is necessary to follow a certain sequence of actions, as well as follow some rules. In this case, it is important to take into account the peculiarities of the shrinkage of wooden walls. If you follow the advice of professionals, the plastic glass unit will serve well for many years.

Video editing will help to cope with the task as efficiently as possible:

Due to their performance characteristics, PVC-material insulating glass units have gained particular popularity among the population. They are installed in buildings and structures erected of concrete, brick, wood. It is necessary to insert plastic windows in a wooden house, following certain rules.

Important nuances of installation

Starting the installation, you need to prepare the inventory that will be required: a building level and a plumb line, and also know how to insert a plastic window. It is necessary to carry out the installation of a PVC window, strictly observing the placement in the plane according to the level... This will ensure the correct operation of all elements, the doors will not spontaneously close and open.

The technology for installing a PVC window assumes its correct placement in the plane according to the level

When purchasing plastic structures, you need to buy additional special mounts for installation. The frame is fixed in the window of a wooden structure using self-tapping screws and special fasteners... Observing the technological process and correctly performing the installation of plastic windows in a wooden house, you are guaranteed to receive window blocks that will last a long time.

Fastening of the window frame is carried out using anchor plates

If you dismantle the sashes, the structure will become much easier and it will be easier to move it, however, it is still not recommended to mount metal-plastic windows in a wooden house alone. To pull out the sash, you need to remove the pins from the hinges.

How to install PVC double-glazed windows

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic windows in a wooden house is done in stages:

  • preparatory measures before installation;
  • installation of PVC windows;
  • control-check of location in space;
  • blowing out with foam.

To understand how to install plastic windows both in a wooden house and from a bar or log house, we will consider each stage in more detail.

Preparatory work

First of all, you need to take the exact dimensions by measuring the opening and order the window structure from a trusted manufacturer. To do this, most often they invite a representative of a company that manufactures plastic frames. You can take measurements yourself. After that, they are determined with the color of the structure and the completeness of the fittings necessary for the functioning of the window.

When the manufacturer delivers the product to the site, follow these steps:

  • if a decision is made to replace the installed windows in the old opening, first of all, it is necessary to dismantle the structure;
  • after which they clean dust, dirt and remove debris that got into the opening from dismantling;
  • it is worth aligning the opening if its geometry is broken.

After completing the preparation, they insert a plastic window into a wooden house with their own hands.

Fastening the window structure to the prepared opening

We install the window sill first, it will be the base for the glass unit, so you need to put it strictly on the level (horizontally). For the strength of the fastening, cuts are made on the sides of the box approximately 8 mm deep. Adjustment is carried out using plastic plates or boards. Fastening takes place with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the box. When screwing in, it is worthwhile to put washers under the head of the screw, this will exclude damage to the surface.

The window sill is installed strictly horizontally.

The next step is to properly install the handle. The film that protects the structures should not be removed, it protects them from damage when the windows are being installed. When fastening, the handle must be placed horizontally. When all the fittings have been assembled, the installation of metal-plastic windows begins.

First you need to level the PVC frame. A frame is placed on two-centimeter bars and leveled horizontally using a water level. After that, proceed to vertical alignment.

Having received the ideal parameters at the water level, they fix the frame with self-tapping screws to the window, using mounting fasteners that were specially bought in the store. It is important not to get into the crest of the log with a self-tapping screw, where the jig is installed.

Secure the frame with self-tapping screws

After fixing the window element, we get 2 cm gaps around it for the foam.

Before using the foam, you need to hang the sashes so that after foaming the frame profile does not bend and damage the window. It is important to remember that foam can only be used when the sash is closed..

Construction control and foaming

After hanging the sashes, you need to check how the double-glazed window opens and closes. If the window, which is half open, does not close and does not move further, then the frame is considered to be correctly set and the alignment is correct. Having closed the sash, foaming is performed with foam for installation and left for full fixation for a day.

Why is a shedding done for plastic windows in a log house?

To get high-quality PVC windows in a wooden house, you need to strictly observe the installation features, that is, to mount to a special frame (base). The need for such a design is due to the peculiarities of timber buildings. Unlike a building made of stone (concrete or brick), a wooden panel house is unstable for a long period.

Shrinkage prevents deformation of the frame during shrinkage of the house

The building will sit down in the first five-year period after its construction. In this case, the walls dry up to 6 cm. This important nuance must be taken into account when installing a plastic window in a frame house. It is clear that it is impossible to simply insert a plastic window into a wooden house; it is necessary to create a structure for the opening, which has the name of a shedding, they also say - a window. Its direct purpose is to prevent the shrinkage of the walls from affecting the frame, therefore the window:

  • strengthens the opening;
  • carries a load;
  • prevents the effect of shrinkage.

Okosyachka looks like a box made of thick boards. The structure is fastened in the side post to the groove, and fasteners are not used. Above the window there is a gap for shrinkage compensation for a wooden house. There are several options for installing it:

  • a groove is cut in the log, where the bar is laid. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the last element of the embedded beam;
  • a groove is cut out in the racks on the sides of the structure, a spike is cut out from the end of the log in the opening;
  • a groove is made at the end of the logs, a spike is located on the side racks of the box.

Casing options

To get a high-quality design, you need to follow the technology of installing plastic windows in a wooden house. To begin with, they cover the crests of the logs with insulation and fasten it with staples or small carnations. This stage is necessary to insulate the house and eliminate squeaks. Then the lower crossbeam of the casing is mounted, and the carriages (side posts of the scissors) are stuffed onto the ridges, and the upper bulkhead is laid in the upper groove of the posts. After collecting the boxes, they are carefully connected with self-tapping screws, it is important that they do not fall into the logs.

The slots that are visible in the opening after installing the casing must be filled with tow or insulation. Then there is a standard installation of plastic windows in a frame house or log house.

The slots are sealed with insulation or tow

The expansion gap is filled with flat planks, pre-wrapped with tow. When the walls shrink, they are gradually knocked out. To do this, remove the upper platband and, knocking out the plank, put it back.

The final stage in the glazing of a wooden structure

Finishing after installing PVC windows in a log house is done in the same way as wooden ones, that is, after installing the frame structure and insulation, they put platbands made of wood. When ordering PVC windows in a wooden structure, you should take a closer look at the option for the texture of the wood, this will allow them to look harmoniously against the background of a felled structure.

Many manufacturers of PVC structures offer not only the classic white version of the frame colors. You can order any shade that the customer wishes. Colored plastic frames will cost a little more, but will be more suitable for a home made from natural materials.

When ordering, it is important to correctly measure the opening and not be mistaken in the width of the window sill. Self-installation of a PVC window in a wooden house with knowledge of all the nuances is not such a difficult process. You can do it yourself, without resorting to the help of expensive installers.

Shrinkage is a natural and inevitable process in all timber structures. In this regard, the installation of plastic windows in log houses differs from the standard installation. The highest percentage of wood drying out was noted in the first two years after the completion of the construction of the log house. The height of the walls is usually reduced to 1.5 cm per meter of masonry. How to insert a plastic window in a wooden house? What adaptations are needed to achieve this goal? Answers to these and many other questions are presented in this article.

Siege

The main stage is the installation of double-glazed windows in a wooden house - fixing the window in the window opening. The upsetting ensures the independence of the windows from the load-bearing walls of the structure. In other words, when the frame shrinks, the window structure remains "intact" and is not subject to deformation vibrations. Okosyachka takes on all shrinkage loads and strengthens the walls of the building in the area of the opening.

The cage is a box made of thick boards. Install it in the opening, after which PVC structures are installed. The box is held with the help of grooves located in the side racks. It is unacceptable to use any fasteners, including polyurethane foam. A compensating gap is left above the structure itself, calculated for the maximum shrinkage of the logs.

There are several options for installing a box:

  • cutting a groove in a log and laying a wooden block in it. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the last of the indicated elements through the side posts (foundation block);
  • sawing out a thorn at the end of the log of the opening and cutting a groove in the side racks of the box ("into the deck" method);
  • the location of the spike on the side struts of the structure, the groove at the end of the opening logs.

Preparation of window openings

It is quite possible to qualitatively install plastic windows in an old wooden house with your own hands. The main installation rules are to follow the sequence of actions and take into account the peculiarities of the building.

To begin with, measure the distance of the window from the base of the floor. The most optimal parameter is 80-90 cm. Ideally, the window sill is installed above the writing table, the height of which, according to the standard, is 80 cm. The marking of the upper and lower boundaries of the window opening is performed using a professional tool - a water level. Its height should be 13 cm higher than the analogous parameter of the inserted plastic window, and its width should be 12-14 cm. Plus, 1.5 cm is left on each side for sealing with polyurethane foam.

The next stage is the preparation of the window opening (measurements, installation). With the help of a building level, markings are made for cutting it. Maximum accuracy in measurements and in the installation of the casing itself is especially important. The quality of the installation work will depend on this. After the opening is ready, a thorn is cut out at the ends of the logs on the sides of the structure. The lower and side parts of the draft window are sheathed with jute.

A cage is made from well-dried wooden blocks, the installation of which is carried out starting from the window sill. The structural elements are fastened together with self-tapping screws, and the joint areas are treated with a sealant. A small gap is filled with tow.

Installation of PVC windows

The finished window is installed, either ideally aligning the front edge, or slightly deepening it inside the house. The frame is fixed to a previously fixed structure using self-tapping screws, having previously drilled holes for them. Double-glazed windows can be inserted into a wooden house (not made of timber), taking into account all the details. It is not only about the accuracy of marking and the choice of high-quality material for the casing, but also the correct selection of fasteners for fixing the window. It is not recommended to use self-tapping screws, the length of which exceeds 12 cm. Such fasteners will easily pass through the window and break the integrity of the log building, which is unacceptable according to the "building" rules.

External waterproofing of the joint can be done in various ways: vapor-permeable or self-expanding sealing tape, one-component acrylic sealant. They will protect the polyurethane foam from moisture and direct sunlight. From the inside, the seam is closed with a vapor barrier tape. Glue it to the end of the frame with a thin strip until foaming. After the seam is treated with polyurethane foam, the protective paper is removed from the adhesive strip and glued to the casing. The sill is installed and the starting profile is screwed to the edge of the frame before the sealing compound hardens.

Plastic windows are used everywhere. They are replacing wooden structures due to a number of advantages, the main of which are reliable thermal insulation and the absence of wind blowing. Installation of a window in a wooden house has a peculiarity that the structure is not rigid. Therefore, a special frame fastener is made for it, which protects it from loads from the walls.

How to install a plastic window in a wooden house? To do this, you need to remove the dimensions of the opening, dismantle the old structure, make and assemble a new box, if the existing one does not fit. After that, you should insert new frames with double-glazed windows and a window sill, and then install the slopes on the plastic windows.

Determination of the dimensions of the opening

For measurements, the platbands are first removed. The plastic frame must fit into the opening inside the box. A gap of 2 cm should be left between them along the entire perimeter, so that in the future it can be filled with polyurethane foam. In addition, on top of the box, an opening of 8 cm should be left to the upper log, which is necessary for the walls to shrink.

Tools and materials

Installation of slopes

When we install the plastic window ourselves, there is nothing easier to trim the slopes of a wooden house. To do this, you can use a lining or block house, which are well suited to the rest of the decoration of the room. They are nailed across to the window, and the corners are sealed with a corner. From the side of the frame, guides are installed for them. Window openings can be finished with wood panels, which are glued onto foam.

To prevent the foam from pushing out the slope, it is attached to the wall with mounting tape (masking tape). After gluing, the mount is removed, the protrusions are framed with a profile. Small assembly defects are eliminated with silicone sealant.

Ebb mount

An external sheet of sheet metal is installed with a slope to remove sediments. Slopes are made and installed under it. The length of the ebb is chosen with a margin of 3 cm on each side. When installed, the edges are folded up. It is advisable to foam the low tide from below so that it does not rattle from wind and rain. You can also put an elastic substrate under it.

Conclusion

By following all the rules and tips on how to install a plastic window in a wooden house, you can create comfortable conditions in it for many years.

Heat-shielding properties of a glass unit are selected according to the table of coefficients of reduced heat transfer resistance.

Before installing a plastic window, you should ensure that it is independent of the displacement of the walls when they dry out. For this, a box is used with the possibility of slipping relative to the logs.
