How to grow healthy tomato seedlings. Tomato seedlings - we grow according to all the rules

Incorrectly grown or early planted seedlings will not please with a rich harvest. Flower buds in elongated, fragile shoots develop poorly, there are fewer flowers. Only healthy and strong seedlings quickly take root in the ground, actively bloom and give tasty and large fruits... How to properly plant tomatoes for seedlings so that the harvest is of high quality?

Tomato seed preparation

No matter how experienced the gardener is, he cannot grow an enviable fruit from a bad seed. Therefore, the choice of seeds must be approached responsibly and it is better to purchase several different types, in case any variety turns out to be unsuccessful.

Before sowing seeds, they are sorted. Empty, damaged and small copies are removed. Experienced gardeners it is recommended to fill them with salt water (60 grams of salt per liter of liquid) and remove from the total mass those seeds that float to the surface. To make it easier in the future to choose best grade, it is better to store and plant seeds separately or in groups and marking where which species.

To prevent seed contamination, it is necessary to carry out a disinfection procedure. For this, the seeds are placed for a day in a container with a solution of acetic acid (0.8%), after 20 minutes they are dipped in a cup with a solution of potassium permanganate (2 grams per glass of water). After the manipulations to protect the seeds are completed, they must be thoroughly rinsed with running water.

Ways to improve seed germination

  • Warming up

The seed bag is dipped into a thermos with hot water for several hours, or the seeds are washed under hot water.

The seeds are soaked for 24 hours in a special solution, which can be found in a specialized store or prepared by yourself. In one liter pure water you need to stir the mixture from copper sulfate, ammonium sulfate. Boric acid, potassium salt and superphosphate should also be added there.

After the seeds have been processed and disinfected, they are placed in wet cloth and germinate, constantly making sure that it does not dry out.

For better adaptation of the sprouts to the climate, it is recommended to harden the seeds. Swollen seeds are sent to the refrigerator for 1-2 days, so resistance to low temperatures is developed.

Preparing seedling potting mix

In order for the tomatoes to be large and healthy, they need to be planted in sod soil, mixed with humus and sand. To maintain normal acidity, resin and chalk should be added to the soil (for every ten kilograms of earth: resin - 0.5 l, chalk - 100 g). But you can buy a ready-made potting mix at the store, or peat tablets (about two seeds per piece), the main thing is to choose a trusted manufacturer.

Seeds must first be planted in one large container, and then pick the best sprouts in a separate container. Dived sprouts can be planted in special containers that are sold in gardening stores, or adapted for this. plastic bottles... Remember to make drain holes in the bottom of each container.

How to grow seedlings correctly

When growing seeds, the main thing is to follow the rules for planting them, temperature regime and follow the recommendations for watering and lighting the sprouts.

Best time to plant seeds

It usually takes 1.5-2 months to germinate tomato seeds, and accordingly the planting time depends on the area in which it is planned to grow them. If you rush to planting, the sprouts will form before the weather stabilizes and it will simply be impossible to plant them in the ground due to the cold weather. If you plant the seeds late, the sprouts will not have time to get stronger and will not survive after transplanting into the ground. Early spring - the optimal time for planting tomato seeds for seedlings.

Seed planting process

The prepared mixture is poured into the container, lightly pressed with palms. After a little water the soil with water, cover the container plastic bag and leave overnight so that the moisture is evenly distributed. After the surface of the earth is leveled, I make grooves 0.5–1 cm deep at a distance of 4–5 cm from each other. The seeds are carefully placed in the recesses and covered with earth and watered again.

Temperature regime

Then the container is covered with glass or a bag and sent to warm place, where the temperature is not lower than 22 degrees - to the radiator or to the windowsill (in the sun). After 5-7 days, when the first shoots hatch, the glass (film) can be removed, and the seedlings can be sent to a cooler place (up to 16 degrees), for about the same time. And when the sprouts get stronger, it is necessary to observe the temperature regime - in the daytime up to 24 degrees, at night not lower than 12.

It is also worth remembering that humid air is harmful to tomatoes. The room in which containers with seedlings will be placed should be regularly ventilated. To prevent the plants from dying, you need to avoid drafts and sharp changes temperatures.

Pickling tomato sprouts

The formation of the first leaves is a sign that it is time to remove weak and non-viable sprouts from the container. The root is pinched during this procedure to accelerate the growth of the root system.

But you shouldn't rush to pick. Before starting the process of sorting the sprouts, make sure that they are strong enough, the bases must be thick. Otherwise, the pick should be postponed.

The pick is made in seedling cups, the sprouts go deep into the soil along the cotyledon leaves. With this procedure, you can reduce the pulling of the shoots. To do this, add more light to the dived sprouts.

Lighting

For the seedlings to be strong and green, they need good and long-term illumination, and in the early days even around the clock. If the windows are on the sunny side, then the light of the seedlings placed on the windowsill will be enough. If the sun is not enough, it is necessary to install several special lamps. Tomatoes are very demanding on light, so additional lighting is required.

Watering seedlings

The moisture content of the soil must be constantly monitored. On initial stage a few tablespoons of water are enough, after which the volume gradually increases, but in cold weather you need to water less often. Soil watering tips:

  • the soil should not be allowed to dry out in containers;
  • it is not recommended to spray the sprouts;
  • it is better to water with a weak solution of mineral fertilizers instead of water.

With an excess of moisture, the leaves acquire a yellow tint, and the roots gradually die off. In addition, with frequent watering, the sprouts can stretch out, which will adversely affect the quality of future tomatoes.

Planting tomato seedlings

Before moving the shoots into the ground, they must be hardened. To do this, the seedlings are gradually accustomed to cold air: airing is intensified, the vents are left open overnight.

It is recommended to plant seedlings in late spring - early summer, when the frost has passed, and the temperature does not drop below 15 degrees. How do you know if the sprouts are ready to "move"? If the sprout has 5-6 leaves and its stem is thick and strong, then it's time to replant it.

Features of growing large tomatoes:

  • you need to plant seedlings in a well-lit place, protected from the wind;
  • the most suitable watering regime is 2 times a week;
  • it is better to use light, sandy loam and loamy soils;
  • sprouts are planted in pre-prepared and spilled holes at right angles;
  • it is necessary to plant sprouts at a distance of 30–40 cm from each other;
  • it is necessary to prepare the soil before planting, fertilize it;
  • a peg should be inserted next to each sprout for support;
  • there should be at least 60 cm between the rows.

Harvesting is done when the tomatoes turn red. If you pick tomatoes green, then this will affect their taste.

Mistakes when growing tomato seedlings

The main mistakes of a poor tomato harvest:

  • poor quality seeds;
  • planting seeds for seedlings too early or, on the contrary, very late;
  • non-compliance with the temperature regime;
  • improper watering (abundant or insufficient);
  • poor lighting quality;
  • rejection of hardening procedures.

A good harvest directly depends on the quality of the seedlings. Therefore, you need to take a responsible approach to the choice of seeds, it is better to take several varieties and then choose the best one, most adapted to your locality and weather conditions. Sort out low-quality seeds and process good ones before planting. Prepare potting mix, plant seeds, and provide proper maintenance. Only if the above recommendations are followed can one hope for a large and tasty harvest.

Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables. Perhaps, you cannot do without them in any garden plot. Vegetables are very tasty, perfect for harvesting for the winter and have many useful substances. Often purchased seedlings may be weak or not match the variety you are looking for. But tomato seedlings can be grown by yourself. The article discusses the basic rules for the cultivation of tomatoes by growing seedlings from seeds.

How to prepare tomato seeds before planting

Tomatoes are planted in open ground seedlings and growing them at home can be done by everyone. This, of course, will take some time and effort, but you will be sure of what you will get in the end. For growing seedlings, most people collect seeds from ripe fruits they like, dry them, and soak them for a couple of days before planting. That's the whole process.

However, if you want to grow a good strong seedlings, resistant to diseases and giving a rich harvest, the seeds must be prepared before sowing. This procedure goes through several stages:

  • drying;
  • selection of seeds;
  • disinfection;
  • soaking;
  • germination;
  • hardening.

Seeds must be selected from ripe fruits that are not damaged by diseases and pests.Dry them for a couple of days in a well-ventilated and well-lit area (avoid direct sunlight). To choose the most best material for planting, the seeds must be immersed in saline for a few minutes. For its preparation, a teaspoon of table salt is stirred in a glass of water and infused for 10 minutes. Then the seeds are dipped in water: those that float must be removed, since they are empty or dry and are not suitable for growing seedlings.

Important!Larger, heavier seeds contain more nutrients. Strong and productive tomato seedlings will grow from such material.

After sampling, the seeds are packed in bags and stored in a dark place at room temperature. If the seeds were stored in the cold, it is recommended to warm them up for a couple of days on a battery in fabric products a month before planting.

The main number of tomato diseases take root on seeds and can exist there long time, regardless climatic conditions... therefore it is recommended to disinfect the material before planting. For this, the seeds are immersed for 15 minutes. in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate or for 7 minutes. in a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide, preheated to 40 degrees.

Did you know?To increase the yield of seedlings, it is recommended to soak the seeds in a nutrient solution for a day before sowing. It can be Imunocetophyte solution or juice from grated fresh potatoes.

To soften the skin of the seeds and facilitate their germination, planting material before sowing, soak for 10 hours in water at room temperature. The seeds are laid out in a piece of gauze and immersed in a container. The amount of water should be 30% less than the seed volume. After five hours, the water will need to be changed.

To speed up the process of germination of sprouts, it is recommended to germinate seeds for five days in a saucer covered with damp gauze at a temperature of 20-22 degrees.

Important! During germination, make sure that the gauze does not dry out and at the same time is not too wet.

In order for the seedlings to be resistant to temperature extremes, nighttime cold snaps, it is recommended to harden the seeds. In addition, such seedlings will bloom earlier and bring much more harvest. For this purpose, the seeds that appear are placed in the refrigerator overnight (the temperature should be from 0 to +2 degrees), and during the day they are stored at a temperature of 20-22 degrees. Manipulations are carried out several times.

Selection and preparation of soil

Tomato seedlings are not very demanding on the soil. The soil for tomato seedlings at home can be either purchased or prepared independently. When buying, preference should be given to peat soil.

To prepare the soil yourself, you need to take loamy soil and add a little humus and compost to it. Seedlings will grow well in loose soil.To do this, you can add peat or sawdust to the mixture.

A coke substrate is also used for planting seeds. It contains many nutrients, prevents rotting of sprouts, promotes the development of a powerful root system.

Did you know? Peat tablets are well suited for growing strong seedlings; 4-5 seeds can be sown in them. When planting in such soil, it is not necessary to dive seedlings in the future.

The choice of container for growing seedlings is of no small importance. Seeds can be sown in these types of dishes:

  • seedling boxes;
  • trays, cassettes;
  • seedling pots;
  • peat tablets or pots;
  • disposable cups.
Moreover, each option has its own pros and cons. Drawers, trays and cassettes are more convenient and economical. You can grow in them a large number of seedlings, while caring for all the shoots. Also, if something happens, such a container can be easily transferred to another place. They do not take up much space and are cheaper in cost. However, shallow containers are suitable for growing seedlings only until the moment of picking.In deep boxes and trays, adult sprouts can get tangled with roots, then it will be very difficult to separate them without damage. In case of damage, the seedlings will take root for a long time, and may even disappear. Of these options, the best choice is baffled trays or cassettes.

Important! The most the best option there will be trays or cassettes with a mesh size of 5-6 cm and a side height of 10 cm. When buying, be sure to specify what the container is made of. It is better to purchase a tray (cassette) made of polystyrene. Do not buy containers made of polyvinyl chloride, it contains poisonous substances.

Seedling pots and disposable cupsthe best way from inexpensive. In them, seedlings can be grown until transplanting into open ground. However, such containers take up a lot of space and are not very convenient if the seedlings need to be transferred to another place. There must be drainage holes at the bottom of the seed containers.

Peat tablets - perfect option... They contribute to the development of a strong root system in the sprouts, prevent rotting of seedlings. However, such a pleasure is not cheap.

Sowing tomato seeds for seedlings

Sowing tomato seeds for seedlings should be carried out on March 15-20.The first shoots will appear in a week. Two more months will pass before the flowering of tomatoes early variety and another week will be required to restore the plant after a dive. In early June, the seedlings will be ready for open field planting.
Before planting, the soil must be slightly wetted. The seeds are buried into the soil no more than 1 cm and at a distance of 5 cm from each other. Then the container must be covered with foil or glass. After sowing, the pot should be placed in a warm place with a temperature of about 25 degrees. Under these conditions, seedlings will appear in a week.

Care and cultivation of tomato seedlings

After the shoots appear, the seedlings must be moved to a lighted and cool room. The temperature regime should be from +14 to +16 degrees. The room is bright. If there is none, you can arrange the illumination of the sprouts using lamps.

After a week, the temperature needs to be slightly increased to +20 degrees, and at night it should be lowered by a couple of degrees. To do this, you can open the window, just do not allow drafts.

Did you know? In the first few days after sprouting, it is recommended to arrange round-the-clock lighting for the seedlings. This will greatly speed up its germination.

Watering tomato seedlings for growing at home should be moderate and carried out with water at room temperature. Until the first good leaf appears, the soil is lightly sprayed with water when it becomes completely dry. After the appearance of the leaf, watering is carried out once a week, and after five good leaves are formed, the seedlings are watered every 3-4 days.

Dive tomato seedlings

Diving is the transplanting of seedlings into separate containers.This contributes to the formation of the root system. Lateral roots grow, plant nutrition improves. Seedlings become more robust and easily take root in the open field, will give a good harvest.
The picking of tomato seedlings is carried out on the tenth day after the first shoots appear. However, each case must be approached individually. General rule says that seedlings dive on the second day after the appearance of the first true leaf.

Important! When diving, only the best and healthiest sprouts are selected, and the rest must be thrown away. Also, a small earthen lump should remain on the root of each sprout.

A couple of days before picking, the seedlings must be lightly watered so that the sprouts can be removed more easily. It is necessary to remove seedlings from the ground very carefully so as not to damage the still weak roots. It is advisable to dig them up with a stick or toothpick. You need to transplant into a deeper container. To do this, you can use pots, disposable half-liter cups or plastic bottles with a cut-off neck.

After picking, the sprouts are watered abundantly and transferred to a cool place with moist air... The seedlings should not be exposed to direct sunlight. After a week, the seedlings are returned to their former warm place.

Hardening tomato seedlings

It is recommended to harden the seedlings so that when planted in open ground they do not freeze, they are hardy to temperature extremes that often occur in summer time... Let's take a closer look at how to harden tomato seedlings.
When it gets warmer outside and the temperature reaches 15 degrees, containers with seedlings are taken out into the street or balcony. Before that, the plants are watered. During hardening, you need to monitor the temperature regime.When the temperature drops below 8 ° C, the containers should be brought into a warmer room. It is better to endure seedlings after four to five o'clock in the evening, when the sun has subsided a little. Otherwise, it may fry. You also need to monitor the soil, it should not dry out. If the soil is dry, it needs to be watered a little. Never leave containers in direct sunlight. The hardening period is two weeks.

Growing tomato seedlings at home requires certain knowledge and skills. Following the sequence of necessary manipulations and applying (data in the article) tips for growing and caring for tomato seedlings, you will receive high-quality, healthy and strong seedlings, which in the future will delight you with a rich harvest.

In the first 20 days after appearance seedlings of tomatoes leaves grow slowly. In the next 15-20 days, growth becomes more noticeable.

To prevent tomato seedlings from stretching, lighting should be sufficient, it is important to monitor the temperature and harden. Within 7 days after the emergence of seedlings, the temperature is maintained during the day (16-18 ° C), and at night (13-15 ° C). Then it is increased to (18-20 ° C) during the day and to (15-16 ° C) at night. This regime is observed until the second and third true leaves appear on the sprout. This usually happens 30 to 35 days after germination.

Over this time tomato seedlings are watered and fed 3 times, which allows you to get strong seedlings even in low light periods (March).

The first time the appeared seedlings are watered sparingly. The second time is watered in 1-2 weeks, combining watering with top dressing, in the phase of one true leaf. Last time watered 3 hours before picking and transplanting seedlings.

Water for irrigation of tomato seedlings must be at room temperature (20 ° C) and must be separated. It is preferable to water young seedlings at the root so that water does not fall on the leaves and they do not rot. Boxes or boxes should be turned daily with the other side to the window pane to prevent the seedlings from pulling to one side.

It is impossible to put the box directly on the windowsill; it is better to use some kind of support so that air access to the root system is not limited.

When the seedlings have 1 real leaf each, they make the first root feeding tomato seedlings: 1 teaspoon of liquid fertilizer "Agricola-Fornard" is diluted in 1 liter of water. This dressing enhances seedling development and strengthens the root system.

The second feeding is done when the third true leaf appears: dilute 1 tablespoon of the "Barrier" preparation in 1 liter of water. Watered with solutions very carefully. Seedlings with 2-3 true leaves dive into 8 x 8 or 10 x 10 cm pots, in which they will grow for only 22-25 days. For this, the pots are filled with one of the soil mixtures recommended above and watered with a solution of potassium permanganate - 0.5 g per 10 liters of water (22-24 ° C). When picking seedlings, sick and weak plants are rejected.

Figure: 1. Picking tomato seedlings into pots: a - planting a non-stretched plant; b - planting a stretched plant;

If the seedlings are slightly elongated, then the stems when diving into pots can be buried in half, but not to the cotyledonous leaves (Fig. 1).

After picking tomato seedlings in pots for three days, the temperature is maintained during the day (20-22 ° C), and at night (16-18 ° C).

As soon as the seedlings take root, the temperature is reduced in the daytime to (18-20 ° С), at night to (15-16 ° С). Watering seedlings in pots Once a weekuntil the soil is completely wet. By the next watering, the soil should dry out a little, but at the same time it is necessary to ensure that there are no long breaks in watering.

12 days after the pick, the seedlings are fed: 10 liters of water take 1 tablespoon of nitrophoska or nitroammophoska. Spend about 1 cup for 2 pots. After 22-25 days, the seedlings are transplanted from small pots into large ones (12 x 12 or 15 x 15 cm). When transplanting, try not to burrow the plants (Fig. 2).

Figure: 2. Transplantation of tomato seedlings from small pots to large ones: 1 - small pot; 2- large pot; 3 - soil layer;

After planting, the seedlings are watered with warm (22 ° C) water, trying to moisten the soil well. In the future, moderate watering is needed (once a week) as the soil dries up. This restrains the growth and stretching of seedlings.

Why do you need to dive seedlings first into small pots, and then plant them in large ones?

At first , each transplant inhibits growth and the seedlings do not stretch.

Secondly , in small pots, plants with regular watering develop a good root system, since water in such pots does not retain and there is more air access.

If the seedlings are dived straight into large pots, it will be difficult to regulate the watering and the water will start to stagnate. With excessive moisture, there is a lack of air and root system slows down growth, which, in turn, negatively affects the development of seedlings (it stretches).

15 days after transplanting into large pots, the seedlings are fed.

When first feeding tomato seedlings for 10 liters of water take 1 tablespoon of superphosphate and potassium sulfate or 1 tablespoon of dry fertilizer "Signor Tomato", stir well and water the seedlings at the rate of 1 glass for each pot.

After 15 days do second feeding: in 10 liters of water dissolve 1 tablespoon of nitrophoska or dry fertilizer "Fertility" and spend 1 glass per plant. Top dressing is combined with watering. If during the period of growing seedlings the soil in the pots is compacted, add a bedding.

When strong pulling of seedlings tomatoplant stems can be cut in two at the 5th or 6th leaf level. Place the upper cut off parts of the plants in a jar of water. After 8-10 days, roots up to 1-1.5 cm will grow on the lower cuts of the stems, and these plants can be planted in 10 x 10 cm pots or in a box with nutrient soil at a distance of 10 × 10 or 12 x 12 cm each from friend. Then they will continue to grow, like ordinary seedlings, which are formed into one stem.

New shoots (stepchildren) will soon appear from the sinuses of the five lower leaves of the trimmed plant remaining in the pot. When they reach a length of 5 cm, the two upper shoots (stepson) must be left, and the lower ones removed. The result is a good standard seedling. It is advisable to do this operation 20-25 days before disembarking the seedlings to a permanent place.

When such tomato seedlings are planted in a greenhouse, they continue to form in two shoots. Each shoot is tied separately with twine to a trellis (wire) and 3-4 fruit brushes are formed.

If tomato seedlings stretched out and turned pale green , need to do top dressing (1 tablespoon of urea or liquid concentrated fertilizer "Ideal" is taken for 10 liters of water), spending 0.5 cups for each pot. Then for 5-6 days, put the pots in a room with an air temperature of 8-10 ° C day and night and do not water for several days. Plants will stop growing, turn green and even take on a purple hue. Then transfer them back to normal conditions.

If the seedlings develops rapidly to the detriment of flowering do root feeding: For 10 liters of water, take 3 tablespoons of superphosphate and spend a glass of this solution for each pot. A day after feeding, the seedlings are moved to a warm place with an air temperature of 926 ° C during the day, and at night (20-22 ° C) they do not water it for several days in order to dry the soil a little. Under such conditions, the seedlings are normalized, and after a week they are transferred to normal conditions. In sunny weather, the temperature is kept (22-23 ° C) during the day, at night (16-17 ° C), and in cloudy weather during the day, it is reduced to (17-18 ° C), at night to (15-16 ° C).

Many gardeners complain about slow growth tomato seedlings , in this case it is fed with a solution of the growth stimulant "Sodium humate" at the rate of 1 glass per plant. The watering solution should be the color of beer or tea.

In April - May, the seedlings are hardened, that is, they open the window both during the day and at night. On warm days (from 12 ° C and above), the seedlings are taken out onto the balcony and opened for 2-3 hours for 2-3 days, and then taken out for the whole day and even left overnight, but they must be covered with a film on top.

If the temperature drops (below 8 ° C), the seedlings must be brought into the room. Well seasoned seedlings have a bluish purple hue. During the hardening period, the soil must be watered, otherwise the plants will wilt.

To preserve flower buds on tomato seedlings on the first flower brush, it is necessary to sprinkle the seedlings with a solution 4-5 days before planting on a garden bed or in a greenhouse (for 1 liter of water 1 g boric acid). Processing is carried out in the morning in cloudy weather.

IN sunny weather plants are NOT processed, otherwise burns will appear on the leaves... Seedlings should be 15-35 cm high, have 8-12 well-developed leaves and mature inflorescences (one or two).

Gardeners often buy seedlings on the market that are grown without following the rules of agricultural technology, that is, densely sown at a later date. The plants themselves will tell you this: they are pale green in color, with large internodes, thin, elongated and without flower buds. Such thin, loose, easily breaking seedlings always give a late and scanty harvest, as a rule, are affected by fungal diseases, especially late blight.

2-3 days before planting the seedlings in a permanent place, it is recommended to cut off 2-3 lower true leaves. This is necessary to reduce the likelihood of disease, better ventilation, illumination, which, in turn, will contribute to better development the first flower brush. Cut the leaves so that stumps remain 1.5-2 cm long, which will gradually dry out and disappear themselves.

Fine( 5 ) Poorly( 2 )

Growing with seedlings provides much better survival and productivity than planting seeds directly in open ground, which is confirmed by many years of experience. However, this process has a number of peculiarities and subtleties, which would be worth talking about in more detail. In this article you will find all the necessary information on how to grow it, when to start this process and how to take care of it in the future.

When to start?

Growing tomato seedlings at home should be started no earlier than 50-60 days before the expected date.

It must be remembered that it usually takes about 7-10 days for tomatoes to give the first shoots, so on average it is worth keeping the seedlings at home after the first shoots appear for 40-55 days.

The correct determination of the sowing time plays an extremely important role for the successful growth of the bush and its abundant fruiting. This period varies depending on the weather conditions prevailing in the places of your residence, and on average looks like this:

  • south of Russia and Ukraine: seedlings are sown from February 20th to mid-March.
  • center of Russia: best time - from mid-March to early April.
  • northern Russia: early to mid-April.

Young seedlings must be provided with sufficient moisture, for which it is recommended use humidifiers or sprayers... It is advisable to carry out processing daily, and in hot conditions - twice a day.

Top dressing

Tomato seedlings need the first one 2-3 weeks after the first shoots appear. After that, the optimal schedule for feeding will be weekly. Best suited for seedlings on the basis of, for example, diluted and fermented or.

It is recommended to apply top dressing early in the morning or late in the evening, after the sun has set, and only after watering. For fertilizing, you can also use commercial fertilizers, but in this case, you need to use only half of the dose indicated on the package.

Additional lighting

Young seedlings, especially in the first time after the emergence of shoots, need a lot of light, therefore, immediately after they hatch out of the ground, they must be placed on the most lighted windowsill. However, if this happened in late February or early spring, natural lighting will still not be enough for them.

It is recommended to place the seedlings in constant conditions in the first 2-3 days after the appearance of the first shoots, since, according to many gardeners, this stimulates germination and guarantees the best yield. After that, you can switch to the usual 16-hour daylight hours, provided by natural conditions.

Picking

In case the seedlings were planted in heap, the first is carried out after the appearance of the first true leaves, which usually occurs by 10 days after sowing. A transplant at this age can often be detrimental to plants, since the root system is still very delicate and easily damaged. Such a pick is made in 200 ml cups.

Important! It is not worth while at the first transplant, despite the advice of many gardeners, to pinch the central root - this will contribute to a delay in the development of seedlings for at least one week.

A few weeks later, a second plant transplant is carried out, this time in pots, the volume of which is about 1 liter. When transplanting, it is important to remember the delicate structure of the young root and be sure to produce it with a clod of earth from the first container.

Pinching

It is necessary to pinch the bush so that the stepsons do not pull on themselves nutrients and did not slow down the growth of the main stem. They are formed in the axils of young leaves and are recommended to be removed before the stepsons reach 5 centimeters in size, since only in this case the bush will painlessly tolerate their removal.

Popular mistakes of novice gardeners

Among the most common mistakes that inexperienced gardeners have, the following should be highlighted:

  • excessive or insufficient watering;
  • non-observance of the temperature or light regime of plants;
  • the initial unsuitability of the selected variety for growing at home;
  • sowing seeds too early in pots;
  • untimely picking;
  • insufficient hardening or its complete absence;
  • unsuitable or contaminated soil with harmful agents.

We hope this article helped you figure out how to properly plant tomatoes for seedlings. Remember that correctly maintained temperature, light and irrigation conditions are 70% of guaranteed success. Another 10% is timely hardening and correct transplant... The remaining 20 are your care and warmth for future majestic plants.
