You can build a column from polystyrene foam, not just finish it. By the way, you can also make stucco from it, which will be indistinguishable from plaster or polyurethane.
It can be plastered and painted, giving the appearance of any natural material. The lace elements of the columns can be covered with gold, and thanks to this you get a real masterpiece.
Metal in the decoration of columns
Of course, metal is not a finishing material for living space. But columns are most often found in public buildings.
These include shopping malls, entertainment venues, restaurants and sports facilities. Room designs in the “techno” and “high-tech” styles practically cannot do without the presence of metal.
So:
- It would seem that what interesting metal can be invented to decorate columns? But that's what designers are for. Look at the photo above: these columns, lined with perforated stainless steel sheets, decorate shopping room, look great and very modern.

Let us introduce you to another material that is very convenient for finishing columns of any shape. This is a flexible tile made using pressed marble chips and acrylic resin.
Such tiles have a thin and rather complex relief, with reverse corners and gaps.
Flexible tiles have recently appeared on the domestic construction markets. Its properties are similar to acrylic plaster.
The only difference is that the tiles are already molded in the factory, and on it front side paper or film is pasted on, giving it a certain texture - most often it is brick or stone.
Wood paneling

In appearance, natural and artificial stone are practically indistinguishable, but the difference in price is noticeable. Therefore, fake stone is much more often used in finishing not only facades and internal surfaces of walls, but also columns.

There is another option for obtaining the texture of stone - this is stone wallpaper.
This is not at all what immediately comes to mind: a drawing on vinyl wallpaper or non-woven fabric. This wallpaper is made of the finest stone veneer.
They are produced on the basis of gypsum or sandstone, which, together with stone veneer, are applied to textiles. It turns out very flexible material, which is ideal for any column configuration.
Moreover, these wallpapers are not afraid of moisture, so they are also suitable for exterior decoration.
Glass
And finally, about finishing the columns with glass. This material, as we know, has many advantages.
All kinds of glass processing methods can decorate any structure, including a column.
- The finishing material can be mirror panels, colored glass, hardboard with a sandblasted pattern, or simply embossed glass with beautiful internal lighting, creating a unique, fabulous atmosphere in the room.
