How to glue wallpaper to the ceiling?
Ceiling preparation:
Before gluing wallpaper to the ceiling, you need to properly prepare it. Ceiling preparation begins with cleaning the previous finishing material. If the old wallpaper does not lag behind the wall well, then use a wet roller. If the previous ceiling covering is enamel paint, then simply wash the surface with soap and sandpaper. Rinse off limescale with hot water and a cloth.
It is only necessary to putty the ceiling in case of large defects. But you still have to prime the ceiling, this will improve the adhesion of the wallpaper to the ceiling, so the durability of your repair will increase.
Make preliminary markings on the ceiling, so that the wallpaper is glued parallel to the rays of light (so the joints will be less noticeable). If you are going to glue wallpaper for painting, then this is optional.
Glue preparation:
Prepare the glue half an hour before gluing the wallpaper, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure that a lump does not form in it - they will be visible under the wallpaper. To avoid them, stir the glue thoroughly for 10 minutes. Sticking wallpaper to the ceiling should be done with a viscous, but not thick glue. Choose glue according to the type of your wallpaper.

Connect the end of the canvas with a previously drawn marking line, be sure to overlap the wall by 1-2 cm. Along the entire width, press the center of the canvas, and run your hands from the center to the edge, thereby pressing the wallpaper. Do this with clean hands or a rubber roller.
We glue the rest of the canvases:
All other canvases are glued joint-to-joint with the first one. Make sure that the joints stick well. If glue is squeezed out at the joints, then immediately wipe it with a clean cloth, otherwise yellow spots will remain. With good adhesives, this will not happen, but it is better to warn yourself.

Such wallpapers are used much more often than paper ones, since they have quite a lot of advantages, and the only disadvantage is poor air permeability. The positive qualities of vinyl wallpaper are:
- High wear resistance.
- Good moisture resistance.
- Ease of gluing.
- A large assortment.
- Affordable price.
Vinyl wallpapers are divided into several types, depending on the method of their production:
- Flat vinyl - these wallpapers have a smooth surface and an exquisite gloss.
- Foamed vinyl - these wallpapers have a textured surface that allows them to imitate various natural or building materials. For example, plaster or tree bark.
- Heavyweight vinyl is considered the heaviest and most expensive type of vinyl wallpaper. Due to its thickness, these wallpapers can imitate natural stone, brick or tiles.
- Silk-screen printing - such wallpaper consists of two layers, the lower one is paper, and the upper one is vinyl with silk threads. These wallpapers are similar to silk fabric and are quite expensive.
- Non-woven wallpaper
The most suitable type of wallpaper for the ceiling, since of the shortcomings they only have a high price, unlike the previous types, although they are worth it. They are also well suited for painting, if you want new paints, it is not a problem to change the color of the ceiling. They have many useful properties:
- They hide surface imperfections due to their dense base.
- They create good air exchange, preventing dampness and mold.
- Useful for plasterboard ceilings (see Finishing plasterboard ceilings - how to do it right), as they protect the ceiling from cracks.
- The benefits of coloring this wallpaper are good in quickly dirty areas such as the kitchen.
- Textile wallpaper
Textile ceiling wallpapers are created by gluing natural fabrics on a paper base and impregnated with special compounds for moisture resistance and wear resistance. In addition, the benefits include:
- High aesthetics and decorativeness.
- Seamless when gluing, invisible joints.
- They do not fade and retain their colors.
- Provides additional sound insulation.
But there are also some downsides:
- High price.
- Attraction of dust.
- Gentle care.
- Fiberglass Wallpaper
They consist of two natural layers: a paper base and a fiberglass layer, which is drawn from highly heated glass. They consist of solid pluses and are suitable for repeated painting. The disadvantages include their high cost.
One of the newest materials on the construction market. This type of wallpaper looks more like plaster and is also sold in powder form and diluted with water before application. Such wallpapers are divided into three types:
- Cellulosic.
- Silk.
- Pulp and silk.
Their differences depend on their filling with cellulose or silk fiber. With the help of liquid wallpaper, they create unique panels on the ceiling. And since they are erased from water, it is worth applying a special protective layer after applying them to the surface. Their advantages are:
- Quite a reasonable price.
- Ecological naturalness.
- High breathability.
- They tolerate temperature changes well.
- Easy to use.
- No additional surface treatment is required before application.
- They have no joining seams or cracks.
- Quite a large assortment of colors.
Popular non-woven wallpaper for the ceiling is a special roll non-woven fabric, which is made from 70% long textile cellulose fibers and 30% special additives. These ceiling wallpapers are breathable and breathable, so the ceiling “breathes”.
Such wallpaper for the ceiling is made with a non-woven lining. The material becomes more durable with this treatment. This wallpaper does not deform, i.e. do not "bubble" after gluing, and also successfully smooth out imperfections and irregularities of the original surface and perfectly reinforce microcracks.

- The thickness of the wallpaper hides the imperfections of the ceiling and bridges the cracks.
- The canvas does not stretch when glued.
- There is no need to spread glue on the wallpaper - it is applied only to the ceiling, thereby reducing the repair time.
- The quality of work is increased due to a more accurate fit of dry sheets to each other when gluing.
- Non-woven wallpaper can be glued to any surface - all types of them firmly adhere to the ceiling made of any material.
- There is practically no alternative to them when pasting in new buildings: cracks formed during the shrinkage of a building are not terrible for such wallpaper.
- They are hygienic and non-toxic.
- Does not fade when exposed to sunlight.
- It is a good choice as a paintable wallpaper.
- For gluing, a special glue for non-woven wallpaper is used. An ordinary pack of glue is enough to cover an area of 18 sq. M.
- During subsequent repairs, you can easily remove the top layer of wallpaper without soaking, and an even and durable non-woven base will remain.
- The price depends on the place of purchase of the wallpaper, their manufacturer, as well as the texture, fashion, color.

- This is a structured ceiling wallpaper.
- The relief is rolled - the wallpaper is rolled through special rollers.
- The reverse side of the relief is visible on the wrong side of the canvas.
- They are very strong and durable.
Manufacturers also produce two types of non-woven wallpaper just for painting.: painted and unpainted. Wallpaper is usually painted in light colors - green, yellow, blue, pink.
Note! After applying paint to painted wallpaper, its shade will change slightly. However, the latest non-woven ceiling wallpaper has the advantage of being able to withstand repeated repainting without losing its strength and texture properties.
Such wallpapers can be:

- with a very small, almost monochromatic pattern;
- with an extruded small pattern;
- with a geometric or floral large pattern;

Non-woven wallpaper coloring technology
We will paint the glued interlining on the ceiling only after the glue has completely dried - in a day. At high humidity or temperatures below 15 degrees, this time increases slightly.

To do this, use paints:
- water-based;
- latex;
- acrylic.
Dyeing process
- We will cover the floor with plastic wrap or newspapers.
- We will paste over the borders of the area to be painted with masking tape.
- Pour the paint into a paint tray and carefully roll the roller in the paint so that it absorbs more evenly, but does not drain from the tool raised to the ceiling.
- Paint hard-to-reach corners with a brush.
- We paint the ceiling wallpaper from the back side with latex water-dispersion paint. Then, after drying, we will glue it to the ceiling. Only the non-woven for the ceiling will be painted over, and the structure will still be white.
- We paint the ceiling itself with bright paint, intended for subsequent wallpapering. After drying, we glue the wallpaper to the ceiling: now the color shines slightly through the translucent non-woven wallpaper.
- We lightly process the embossed part of the already pasted wallpaper with a hard (lint-free) rubber roller without pressing so that the paint does not get into the recesses.
- By combining wallpapers of different colors, we can achieve an imitation of fashionable multi-level ceilings.
