What to do with a bald head. Why do men go bald

The one who thinks that the problem of baldness can worry only men in old age is mistaken. Statistics show that over the past 50 years, alopecia has become "younger" - now about 25% of the stronger sex, by the age of thirty, notice a significant thinning of the hair and emerging bald spots on the crown, and by the age of 40, every third man loses up to 80% of the hair on the parietal zone.

ZONES AND STAGES OF Alopecia in Male Alopecia

However, alopecia does not always start at the crown and, unfortunately, is not always limited to this area.

Trichologists distinguish several stages of baldness: mild, moderate and severe - depending on the degree of hair loss, as well as several forms. The forms of alopecia depend on where the man's hair first falls out (in the forehead, temples, crown).

When visiting a trichologist, the doctor, having examined the patient and combining information about the form and stage of baldness, will reveal a pattern of alopecia. For the stronger sex, this model is determined by the Norwood-Hamilton scale.

Scale (table) Norwood-Hamilton

So, for example, if a man has just begun to thin the hair on the crown and small bald patches appear in the forehead area (the so-called "widow's triangle") - this is an easy, second, degree. And if only the hair on the back of the head is reminiscent of the former thick head of hair, the degree of baldness is severe and only hair transplantation can help in this case.

It is interesting

Recently, brutality is increasingly associated with a clean-shaven skull. Remember Vin Diesel, Jason Statham or Gosha Kutsenko - this is the personification of masculinity. Moreover, such an identification has scientific roots - often baldness is associated with an increased production of the very male sex hormone - dihydrotestosterone.

WHY MEN HAVE A BALD PENNY ON THE MACUS

Androgenic (caused by hormonal factors) alopecia is the most common cause of baldness in the crown of the head. Up to 90% of all cases are associated with androgenic causes. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the predisposition to this type of baldness is often inherited (then we are talking about androgenetic alopecia). No cure for this disease has yet been invented.

Other causes of hair loss include:

  • serious diseases, especially those associated with the effect on immunity: diabetes mellitus, oncology, the formation of kidney stones, gall bladder;
  • severe stress, vitamin deficiency;
  • loss due to surgery of any organs of the digestive system, for example, the adrenal glands. As a result, the body loses the ability to synthesize vitamins, which are also necessary for nourishing the hair follicles);
  • seborrhea (in this disease, the secretion of the sebaceous glands is disturbed, both increased and decreased sebum secretion can occur), which indirectly negatively affects the development and growth of hairs;
  • radiation exposure;
  • burns and injuries. It is worth noting that most often, with mechanical and burn damage, the hair follicles are not just damaged, but die, therefore, it is almost impossible to restore hair by any methods other than transplantation.

Since the problem of baldness has been faced by the entire male population of the globe for a long time and is everlastingly acute, there are many methods of dealing with alopecia.

How to get rid of baldness: popular methods of combating baldness in men

All methods can be conditionally divided into medical and non-medical. Of course, trichologists advise paying attention, first of all, to the first, but we will briefly consider everything.

Wig and feathers

Maybe it sounds rather naive, but to this day many men (both old and young) try to hide the emerging bald spot by combing their hair from "unaffected" places, for example, the back of the head. And when hair loss becomes catastrophic, wigs are used (often expensive, made from natural hair). Some try to disguise their bald head with hats, bandanas, etc. However, no matter how high-quality the wigs are, no matter how beautiful the hats are, the secret sooner or later becomes apparent, and you have to either deal with the problem using other methods, or put up with it.

Folk remedies and methods

In the arsenal of traditional medicine there are many means for stopping hair loss and enhancing hair growth, and some of these recipes have successfully migrated into classical medicine: for example, masks and rubbing with burdock root extract, nettle, red pepper. However, there is one “but” here: in the case of androgenic alopecia, all these methods are powerless, because they can only strengthen and “wake up” the hair follicles affected by stress or vitamin deficiency, but the hormonal causes of baldness cannot be overcome by folk remedies.

Cosmetics

All kinds of shampoos, serums, masks, balms, advertised and not so much, sold both in ordinary supermarkets and exclusively in pharmacies. Here, some manufacturers emphasize loyalty to folk recipes, others - the use of the latest formulas and technologies. However, as in the previous case, almost no cosmetic product is capable of combating androgenic alopecia, which, as we said, is the most common cause of male pattern baldness. By the way, modern cosmetologists have found an alternative solution: recently, a special powder that imitates short stubble has appeared on sale.

Cosmetology procedures

Beauty salons offer a wide range of procedures designed to activate hair growth and stop hair loss: iontophoresis, plasma lifting, mesotherapy, myostimulation and completely exotic cryo- and ozone therapy. The effectiveness of all these procedures has not yet been clinically proven to the end.

The greatest effect, according to various sources, is shown by:

  • mesotherapy - the introduction into the scalp of a special complex of drugs and vitamin "cocktails";
  • myostimulation - the effect of a pulse current.

It should be noted that in the fight against androgenic alopecia, all these methods will be useless.

Vitamin complexes and trace elements

Strengthening the immune system is useful in any case, so you should not neglect taking multivitamin preparations. If alopecia was caused by a weakened immune system, vitamin deficiency or the inability of the body to synthesize this or that vitamin, outside help will come in handy and hair as well.

Medications

Modern pharmacology offers two drugs that are effective in the treatment of androgenic alopecia: "Finasteride" (which, by the way, is prescribed only to men) and "Minoxidil" - a remedy for external use that can partially stop hair loss and stimulate the growth of new ones. Both drugs should be taken only on the recommendation of a trichologist.

The American remedy "Rogaine" is extremely popular. According to user reviews, it really helps. However, the drug has a lot of disadvantages. Firstly, it must be applied regularly, otherwise the hair will begin to fall out even more. Secondly, the drug can be ordered only in the online store, and often it is about delivery from the United States (do not forget about the sanctions). Thirdly, "Regaine" is a very expensive pleasure.

Transfer

Unfortunately, most often androgenic alopecia leads to a situation where no medicinal, cosmetic or other means can help. Even if the cause of baldness has been eliminated, it is almost impossible to restore already lost hair. Then the doctor may suggest hair transplantation. For this, healthy hair follicles are taken from the donor area (most often the back of the head) from the patient and transplanted to the baldness area. The transplant can be carried out in three ways: the Strip method, the FUE method and, finally, the HFE method.

  • The Strip technique involves surgical intervention: the doctor cuts out a flap of skin from the donor area with a scalpel, then divides it into small grafts, which are implanted into the prepared incisions in the recipient area. This method is quite traumatic, after the operation, scars remain, and it is impossible to repeat the transplant.
  • The FUE method (Follicular Unit machine Extraction) is less invasive: here a punch up to 5 mm in diameter is used to remove the grafts, leaving small round scars on the donor area. There will also be scars on the transplant area, since incisions are made to implant the follicles.
  • The most advanced method is HFE (Hand Follicular Exstraction), in which each graft is removed separately and manually using microsurgical instruments. In the recipient area, no incisions are made in advance: the follicles are implanted directly into the skin, and the puncture is made with a special implanter. This procedure is almost non-invasive, it minimally traumatizes the skin of the donor area. HFE achieves almost 100% effectiveness in hair engraftment in the bald area. If necessary, you can carry out a second transplant.

To date, only one clinic in Russia practices the HFE transplantation technique. This is the HFE Clinic, where specialists with vast experience in the field of hair transplant work. The best trichologists consult here, and the operations are performed by certified transplant specialists. In our clinic, each client will help you find thick, beautiful hair.

Hair loss is a natural process, which, however, tends to increase depending on a number of factors. Middle-aged men are at risk in the first place: some form of baldness (alopecia) begins in 70% of them. This may be due to heredity, diseases of the internal organs, or external factors. To fight or not - that's the question.

Let's say right away: there is a fundamental opportunity to return the head of hair, but not everyone succeeds in realizing it. To solve the problem correctly, first of all, you should determine the cause and stage of baldness.

Causes of the appearance of bald spots on the head in men

It will be quite difficult to figure it out without the help of a specialist, so if you decide to devote time to your hair, start with a consultation with a trichologist. Some clinics provide it for free. The specialist will identify one or more of the causes of baldness. There are only three of them:

  • Reason # 1: genetics. Androgenetic alopecia transmitted through the female line. If the patient's maternal grandfather had an extensive bald patch, it was most likely inherited. In this case, only hair transplantation will help.
  • Reason # 2: disease. Impaired cerebral circulation can make it difficult to feed the hair follicles, which leads to the so-called alopecia areata... In this case, hair loss occurs chaotically, forming bald spots in unexpected places. Hormonal disruptions usually lead to "classic" baldness, which has a direction from the forehead and temples to the back of the head and eventually leaves a small strip of hair in the form of a horseshoe.
  • Reason # 3: external factors. These include radiation, chemical, mechanical effects. This type of alopecia is called diffuse... Even too frequent shampooing (it is recommended to clean the scalp no more than twice a week) can trigger the balding process. In case of hair loss after radiation or chemical exposure, a special study is necessary: often the hairline is restored spontaneously. But if hair stops growing in places of scars, thermal or chemical burns, we are talking about traumatic alopecia, and the problem is solved only by transplantation methods.

Baldness stages

Experts distinguish seven stages of hair loss:

  1. "Blurring" of the hairline on the forehead due to the appearance of triangular bald patches.
  2. Pronounced receding hairline on the forehead, a change in the hairline.
    1. Displacement of the hairline on the forehead by 2 cm, the forehead becomes visually higher.
  3. Significant deep triangular bald patches.
    1. Displacement of the hairline on the forehead by 3 cm or more, hair thinning at the crown.
    2. Loss of hair on the crown, deep triangular bald patches on the forehead.
  4. Extensive areas of hair loss on the forehead and crown of the head.
    1. The baldness zone begins to spread from the crown to the back of the head and affects the entire frontal and frontotemporal regions.
  5. Very significant hair loss at the crown of the anterior temporal region.
    1. The areas of hair loss on the forehead and the crown of the head almost merge.
  6. Extensive completely hairless area formed by merging balding areas on the forehead and crown.
  7. The remaining hair forms a narrow horseshoe-shaped band at the back of the head, from ear to ear.

Practice shows that hair transplant can be recommended already from the second stage. The first stage, even with hereditary baldness, can sometimes be "stretched" by adjusting the lifestyle and diet, using cosmetics to stimulate hair growth. However, this is possible only with an integrated approach and the use of funds recommended by trichologists. Otherwise, you can achieve the opposite effect and not delay, but bring the second stage of baldness closer, and then the process threatens to grow like an avalanche.

Methods for getting rid of bald spots on the head

First of all, you need to know that hair transplantation methods are operational and non-surgical. For any of them, local anesthesia and outpatient conditions are sufficient. Although there are no absolute contraindications to hair transplantation, the following factors should be considered when choosing a method:

  • Age up to 25 years. At an earlier age, it is difficult to correctly establish the area and causes of the lesion. In this case, a hair transplant can cause a deficiency of hair in the donor area.
  • Insufficient amount of hair in the donor area... The problem is solved by choosing a point transplantation technique.
  • Mental disorders... Transplantation is meaningless in cases where the patient experiences an uncontrollable desire to pull out hair, suffers from obsessive thoughts, and has a distorted view of his own body.
  • Diabetes(minimally invasive non-surgical methods should be chosen).
  • Chronic diseases in the acute stage.
  • Infectious diseases.

After any hair transplant procedure, a recovery period is required, during which the doctor's recommendations must be carefully followed. How successfully got rid of bald head was, it will be possible to fully assess in 12 months.

There are four known hair transplant methods:

FUE ( Follicular Units Extraction). The most widespread at the present time in Russia, fast and at the same time gentle. The essence of the method is that small areas of skin with hair follicles, 1.8–5 mm in diameter, are taken from the donor area with a special machine with a punch. After that, they are cut into tiny grafts - grafts for implantation. The grafts are inserted into incisions or punctures using tweezers. The recovery period lasts about a month; after the procedure, small, densely located, rounded scars remain in the donor area. The density of the transplanted hair usually differs visually from the natural one - and this is a minus. The survival rate of the transplanted hair is 80–90%, the final density is 50–60 follicles per square meter. cm.

FUT ( Follicular Unit Transplantation). It differs from FUE in that a small skin flap (no more than 10x3 cm) is cut into the grafts, cut from the back of the patient's head. The method is quick, but rough, leaving large scars in the donor area. Cannot be applied on one person more than three times, at intervals of at least six months. The recovery period can take up to three months, the density of the transplanted hair will be low. Moreover, at the site of excision in the donor area, one or several unaesthetic scars will remain for life. In Moscow, this technique is now almost never used. The survival rate of the transplanted hair is about 60%, the final density is 30–40 follicles per square meter. cm.

STRIP. The classic operating method. It is used extremely rarely, with low hair density in the donor area: a skin flap is taken 20–25 × 3 cm in size, excised into several thousand grafts, and then transplantation with a greater hair density is carried out. The wound remaining at the site of the removal of the skin flap is sutured with a cosmetic suture. The scar will remain visible for life - this is a significant disadvantage. As well as the fact that the recovery period takes up to 3 months. The survival rate of the transplanted hair is about 60%, the final density is 30–40 follicles per square meter. cm.

HFE ( Hand Follicle Extraction). Fully manual, minimally invasive technology, considered the most advanced in the world. With the help of microneedles, not pieces of skin are removed from the donor area, but immediately hair follicles - from one to three at a time. Placement into the transplant area is also performed using a microneedle. It allows you to install the follicle at a precisely defined depth and at the desired angle, without a preliminary incision. The recovery period is very short - a maximum of one to two weeks. The transplanted hair looks as natural as possible, no scars remain in the donor area. The method allows you to transplant hair not only into the baldness area on the head - it can help to restore the shape and thickness of eyebrows, beards, mustaches, sideburns. Up to 98% of transplanted hairs take root, the final density is up to 80 follicles per sq. cm.

In modern realities, high demands are placed on a man's appearance, especially if his professional activity is associated with a large number of social communications. A well-groomed hairstyle, eyebrows, beard, mustache are part of the image of a successful person. The latest hair transplantation methods will allow you to maintain your perfect appearance for years to come.

Most men are not as jealous of their appearance as women, but still the abundant loss of strands can upset any member of the stronger sex. When men have a bald spot on the top of their heads, many of them believe that this process is irreversible, it is not possible to fight it, and if there are any methods to eliminate it, they are unlikely to be effective.

This statement is unfair, since it is possible to fight the phenomenon, but first you need to understand its causes.

Non-medical causes of crown baldness

Hair loss on the crown of men in most cases is associated with age. But there may be other provoking factors as well.

  • Heredity. Both in the male and female lines, a person may have close relatives who also experienced hair loss early. A man who is attentive to himself will be able to recognize that he will soon have a bald spot, shortly before he sees the first bald spots. If heredity acts as a provocateur of the phenomenon, at some period he may notice that the strands have begun to grow more intensively, but the hairs have become much thinner, weaker, have lost their former color, becoming dull.
  • Stress, neuroses, depressed emotional state. During periods of stress, the body accumulates all the forces to protect the nervous system, support the state of vital organs and systems, and the follicles of the strands are not included in this list. Due to this, they begin to thin out, and eventually die off altogether, and if measures are not taken in a timely manner, this process can be irreversible. If the emotional state that led to the problem is temporary and recedes quickly, then the curls will soon recover.
  • Dry or oily scalp and hair. With a lack of softening of the dermis, hair becomes brittle, dandruff appears, clogged in the pores, and literally, does not allow them to breathe. This leads to the problem of hair loss, as hair follicles atrophy over time. No less dangerous is the excessively intensive functioning of the sebaceous glands, due to which seborrhea appears, and the pores of the dermis of the head are clogged with excess sebum and dead cells of the epidermis.
  • Excessive passion for coffee. Due to an excess of caffeine in the blood, blood flow deteriorates, which makes it difficult to transport oxygen to the follicles of the curls, due to which the hair on the crown of men becomes thinner and then falls out. Smoking also leads to this.
  • Thinning hair on the crown can also be due to improper nutrition, if the diet is poor in vitamins and minerals.

Causes of crown baldness due to diseases

The problem may be associated with such diseases:

  • Infections, viruses.
  • Injuries, particularly to the scalp.
  • Recently transferred operations.
  • Taking drugs used to treat cardiovascular ailments, hypertension, arthritis, oncology.
  • Diseases of the endocrine system and anemia can also provoke hair loss on the back of the head.
  • Excess testosterone. The point is the hypersensitivity of the hair follicles located in the region of the crown and the extreme points of the scalp to this male hormone. If the latter is found in excess in the body, the hormone can have a detrimental effect on the strands growing in these zones. It is also possible to notice the impending problem earlier than it clearly manifests itself - the strands in these areas turn into a soft fluff, and only then they begin to gradually or abruptly fall out;
  • Hormonal surges. In men, they can be observed several times in life - in adolescence, namely at 14-16 years old, at the age of 23-27 years, and also at the age of 35-37 years. At any of these stages, hormonal changes can be accompanied by various kinds of diseases, which can provoke the loss of strands. At the same time, a representative of the stronger sex may not attach importance to the fact that the scalp has become too oily or, on the contrary, dry, the color of the strands has changed, and they themselves fall out, albeit not abundantly. These are the first signs of baldness due to hormonal surges.

Causes of hair loss on the vertex in women

The fair sex reacts much more violently to the loss of curls. The causes of the problem may be similar to the provoking factors that cause this phenomenon in the stronger sex.

In addition, baldness can also be triggered by such factors:

  • Improper care. They talk about him if a woman chooses the wrong means for caring for curls, styling products, and also abuses styling tools.
  • Strong hair pulling with hairpins, clips and elastic bands, as a result of which it is disturbed
  • Many of the fair sex are very fond of sunbathing, including getting a beautiful skin tone artificially - in a solarium. Both the sun's rays and the ultraviolet light of tanning salons negatively affect the structure of the hair, drying it out, which leads, in the alternative, to the loss of curls.

If a man has hormonal surges only a few times in his life, then a woman has them every month. At certain periods, she can observe that the curls begin to fall out, but after some time the density of the hair is restored. But only hormonal disruption caused by malfunctioning of the body can provoke profuse hair loss.

What to do when the top of your head becomes bald?

Regardless of which gender this trouble has touched, measures must be taken immediately to prevent the hair follicles from atrophying. Otherwise, hair restoration will become almost impossible.

First of all, it is worth contacting a trichologist, and, if necessary, to other doctors who will help to identify or exclude diseases due to which the hair began to thin.

The specialist you contacted with the problem can advise you on the use of special tools and methods to restore the growth of curls:

  • Regardless of what the cause of baldness is, special shampoos, lotions, gels containing elements that stimulate the growth of curls can be prescribed;
  • In the event of a malfunction of the endocrine system, an overabundance or lack of any hormones in the body, hormonal agents can be prescribed. In the case of men who have an excess of testosterone, phytoestrogen is prescribed;
  • Extracts with a biostimulating effect are capable of avoiding the loss of strands and resuming their growth.

In some cases, a hair transplant may be indicated.

In parallel with the treatment, you should reconsider your diet: eat more fruits, vegetables, herbs.

Regular exercise will help improve blood flow to the scalp. In order for hair growth on the crown or other parts of the head to recover faster, you should select care products rich in vitamins and minerals.

Try not to overload the curls with styling products, and dry the former as naturally as possible.

Alopecia areata is a process during which there is complete or partial loss of hair on certain parts of the head or body. Also, the term baldness is applied to significant hair thinning. Alopecia itself can occur in both females and males. Although men most often have total loss, and women more often have thinning. According to the form of loss, trichologists divide alopecia into: total (complete absence of hairs), diffuse (when the hair is significantly thinning over the entire surface) and focal (hair is absent only in some areas of the head).

Causes

  1. The cause of focal alopecia can be severe stress, prolonged intoxication of the body, as well as autoimmune diseases.
  2. Hormonal disturbances in the body can also trigger baldness.
  3. Chronic poisoning of the body most often provokes diffuse alopecia. In addition, this pathology is often an accompanying factor during pregnancy.
  4. Alopecia can be hereditary, passing from one generation to the next.
  5. When the scalp is traumatized (scars and scars, severe burns), cicatricial alopecia occurs.

Types, types and stages of hair loss

In this type of baldness, the following signs can be noted:

  • Severe itching of the scalp, its redness and irritation;
  • Hair falls out in whole bunches in places where there is irritation;
  • Round and oblong bald patches appear on the head and body;

This type of baldness is also called alopecia areata. This problem can also be genetically determined. The damaged hairline renews over time, but a doctor's consultation will not hurt.

Heat and chemical burns, as well as severe damage to the skin, can lead to the formation of connective tissue in the injured area. In this case, hair follicles die, and they can only be restored through surgical intervention. Cicatricial baldness can also provoke infectious diseases.

Such baldness can be found quite often among little girls who are braided too tight ponytails. Because of this, the skin is poorly supplied with oxygen, and the hair follicles are severely thinned. Adult women also suffer from this type of baldness when they braid tight tails and braids, often use a hairdryer and are aggressive. Severely coarse and harsh combing, dreadlocks and hair extensions can also trigger this hair loss.

In this case, the problem is nervous disorders. Such diseases most often develop in young children and females:

  • Plucking hair, eyebrows and eyelashes;
  • Obsessive twisting strands on the fingers;
  • Constant depression in mood and tension;
  • Irritable when teenagers chew their hair;

Women are less resistant to stress factors than men. The first step on the way to restoring hair should be a visit to a neurologist. It is the doctor who will tell you how best to get rid of this negative habit. A trichologist will take care of other issues.

Baldness in men

It is most common in the stronger sex and is the most common type of alopecia. In this case . This problem can arise when the body overproduces the male hormone and the formation of dihydrotestosterone. It is he who suppresses the work of hair follicles: the hair becomes thinner, loses its color and gradually stops growing.
But such a disease can be inherited. In this situation, the male hormone will be normal, but hair loss cannot be avoided either. Men may begin to lose hair at the back of their heads, crown of their heads, or temples. In addition, hair loss at a young age can provoke complete baldness.
If an increased level of production of this hormone is observed in women, they may experience partial, but rather abundant hair loss in the crown or temples. This type of loss is called the male type. If medication is started early on, it can provide full recovery. But the advanced version of the disease involves only a transplant.

This type is much less common in males. The reason may be severe disruptions in the endocrine system, overly strict diets and poor nutrition, as well as various kinds of diseases. In this case, a person loses hair evenly. They become very thin, losing their volume. This hair loss can also be completely healed by starting treatment on time.

Baldness in women

Endocrine type

This disease is most common in women, but rarely in men. The cause can be problems with the thyroid gland or its hormones.

Can baldness be stopped? How to do it?

How to stop the process of alopecia? Initially, you should make an appointment with an experienced trichologist, who will accurately identify the cause of such a problem and, if necessary, send it to the right specialists. Self-medication in this case will not help. All pharmaceutical preparations are created to treat specific cases, because what helped one person can significantly harm another. Cosmetics are unlikely to help fight such a serious process. After determining the cause of the disease, the doctor will prescribe a set of treatment tools.
