Correct fit hyacinths at home

Hyacinth is a perennial bulbous plant. Planting hyacinths at home is widespread. Pleasing to the eye bright flowers very different colors: white, pink, burgundy, purple, lilac. Hyacinths with bright colors blooming in winter or in early spring when most other plants are dormant.

Hyacinths are beautiful perennial flowers that bloom in winter or early spring.

Preparing for planting hyacinths

By choosing the time to plant the bulbs for distillation, you can achieve the desired flowering time of the hyacinth. If the bulbs are planted before mid-September, they will most likely produce flowers by the New Year. To get flowers by the beginning of spring, it is better to plant in the first days of November. Exact time depends on the variety and conditions of distillation. It is not recommended to start distilling hyacinth before September. To grow hyacinth at home, it is very important to select the right bulb for forcing. Choose a bulb that is dense to the touch, large enough (5 cm or more), without external damage, without traces of rot and other diseases.

It takes some experience to prepare the bulbs for forcing yourself. Therefore, it is better to use store-bought bulbs for planting hyacinths at home. Preference should be given to large, proven stores specializing in the sale of flowers.

Before planting, the bulbs should be stored in a dry, dark place at temperatures up to + 18 ° C.

You can plant the hyacinth in a pot or any medium-sized container. You can use various bowls, boxes. The main condition is the presence of a drainage hole. Drainage must be placed at the bottom of the container, with a layer of about 2-3 cm. Fine expanded clay or sand will do. Nutrient soil is poured onto the drainage. Choose mixtures with neutral acidity. You can use leafy, sod land with a small addition of peat and sand. A ready-made earthen mixture purchased from a store is suitable.

How to plant bulbs

Next, the bulbs are planted. Usually 1 - 3 bulbs are planted in one container. Planting is allowed more bulbs, which depends on their size and the size of the container. Do not allow the bulbs to come into contact with each other and with the walls of the pot, maintaining a distance of about 2 cm.Do not completely cover them with earth. Leave about a third of the bulb's height above the surface. Sprinkle a little sand on top to avoid rotting. If the top of the bulb is slightly below the edge of the pot, the flowers will look neater.

Then the container with the onions is covered with polyethylene, in which several holes are made to maintain ventilation. Next, the pot is placed in a cold, dark place. You can cover it with an opaque material and take it out into a cool room or refrigerate it. Periodically you need to check that the soil in the pot does not dry out. If necessary, it should be moistened. It is also not worth pouring over the earth.

The cold period is a prerequisite in the process of forcing hyacinths. At the same time, it is important to maintain the temperature in the room not higher than 5-7 ° C. During this period, rooting of plants takes place.

In such conditions, the bulbs are kept for 8-12 weeks. During this time, the first shoots appear. Now containers with flowers are transferred to a warmer, but not hot place, maintaining the temperature not higher than + 15 ° C. Usually, within one week, an arrow grows, buds form. After the buds appear, the flowers are transferred to a permanent place with good lighting protected from drafts, heat and direct sunlight. At the same time, they carefully monitor that the soil remains moist. Water the plant carefully, not allowing water to get on the bulb and base of the leaves. A good effect is given by feeding and additional lighting... For even growth, you can turn the pot periodically. Bright, fragrant flowers soon bloom. The average flowering time of a hyacinth is 1-2 weeks.

Hyacinth is a flower of the asparagus family with a pronounced pleasant aroma. It is a versatile plant that is grown indoors and outdoors. But in a pot, it will not bloom many times: this is possible only when transplanted in open ground.

Why hyacinths are grown in pots

Flowers are grown both in pots and outdoors

Hyacinth - perennial bulb flower responsive to creation favorable conditions lush bloom... After that, the bulb needs rest, which is otherwise called the "state of rest". During this period, plant organs begin to form in it, which will delight with its beauty for the next season. These are natural processes for all bulbous plants, and hyacinth is no exception.

But at home, you can change the natural rhythms of the plant and get beautiful flowers by the desired date. This process is compulsory and is called “forcing”. Its two options are possible: in water and in soil.

There are three types of forcing, depending on the growing period:

  • early (by the end of December);
  • medium early (getting flowers in the middle of winter);
  • late (flowering in early spring).

Important! The bulb can gain strength for further flowering only in natural conditions... To do this, it is transplanted into the ground. Before the onset of frost, they are dug up and transferred to the house. Then it can be used again for germination by a certain date.

When selling blooming hyacinths, a label with the text is often attached to the pot: discard the bulb after flowering. In this way, sellers inform that they cannot receive a flower again in the pot. To do this, you must proceed in accordance with the note suggested above: transplant the bulb into the soil on the street.

Residents of cities are often deprived of such an opportunity and do not know how to properly grow hyacinths. The bulb can not be thrown away, but planted on adjoining territory, cottage or on any flower bed you like. It is likely that by the end of autumn she will give 1–2 babies.

Correct distillation of flowers

Choosing a quality planting material very important for successful flowering

The success of forcing hyacinths largely depends on the type of plant and how well the bulb is chosen. A number of requirements are imposed on the planting material.

Preparing the onion

In order for the hyacinth to bloom in a pot, it is necessary to properly prepare the bulb. This only applies to seed that has been dug out of the ground. If an onion is bought in a retail network, it is obviously believed that it has passed all the stages of preparation listed below.

  1. Bulbs intended for germination are dug up in the middle of summer. They are cleaned of soil and kept for 14-15 days in conditions high humidity at + 30 ° C.
  2. Then the temperature is reduced to + 25 ° C and the seed is kept for two weeks.
  3. Further, until planting, the bulbs are kept at + 17 ° C.

Boarding time

The rooting period of the bulb is 6-10 weeks, depending on the variety and quality of the seed. If they want to grow flowers by a certain time, they are guided by the time-tested ones:

  • flowers by the beginning of the new year and Christmas - planting in the first half of September;
  • by March 8 - at the end of October.

Soil preparation

Any small containers are suitable for planting hyacinths: plastic cups, deep disposable plates, pots, jars.

For planting, you will need a certain list of materials and tools.

  1. A drainage with a thickness of 10–20 mm is formed at the bottom. These can be small stones mixed with sand.
  2. Next, a layer of soil is poured. You cannot use sour hyacinths for growing hyacinths. The optimal choice- a mixture in equal proportions of leafy soil, turf and compost, add a little sand and peat. You can also mix in equal proportions lowland peat and coarse sand... Another option is to buy a ready-made potting mix at a gardening store.
  3. A 5–7 mm layer of sand is poured onto the substrate. This is a precautionary measure to prevent root decay of the plant.

Landing

For forcing, deep pots 14–20 cm high are used. In the process of growth, the bulb will inevitably grow and protrude above the soil surface. Therefore, you need to plant it in the upper third of the pot, and not at the level of its edges.

For commercial purposes, hyacinths are grown in small boxes, but each bulb is in a separate cell

The planting process consists of several stages:

  • the bottom of the bulb is slightly pressed into the ground (do not screw it in!);
  • sprinkle with earth so that the upper part of the bulb is free, protrudes above the ground level;
  • dusting of the upper part with dry sawdust is permissible.

Attention! If several bulbs are planted at once, they should not be in contact with each other. In this case, the landing should be sufficiently crowded. Optimal distance between them 2–2.5 cm.

Rooting period

After the flower is planted in a pot, it needs a rest period. At this time, the following conditions are provided:

  • complete lack of lighting;
  • air temperature + 5–7 ° С;
  • normal humidity.

During the rooting period, constantly make sure that the soil in the container is moderately moist. Drying out is unacceptable. For the purpose of disinfection and feeding, the soil is watered with a solution of potassium permanganate and sprinkled wood ash... The duration of the rest period is 2–2.5 months.

Storage space for pots:

  • lower shelf of the refrigerator;
  • cold loggia;
  • basement or cellar;
  • garage.

The rest period is also called "cold". This is an indispensable step in the forcing of bulbous flowers.

The final stage of forcing

Two months after planting, they begin to regularly check for sprouts. Once they reach a height of 2–2.5 cm, the seed pots are transferred to a cool and well-sunlit place. Optimally - on the windowsill. The flower should be here for the entire next month. In the first week after the end of the cold period, it is advisable to cover the pots with a paper cap.

Attention! During this period of plant growth, the air temperature should not exceed + 15 ° C.

At the end of this stage, buds appear and the pot is transferred to the place where it will constantly be. Further, the beginning of flowering is expected. Hyacinths do not tolerate excess moisture well, so you need to water it regularly, but in moderation.

Distillation in water

To obtain a "water" flower, before planting, they go through all the same stages as when growing in a pot. It is important to choose the right water container. It should be such that the bulb does not sink in liquid, but comes into contact with it with its lower, root part. In order to achieve this, you can use various devices. A good choice- narrow glasses.

The water must be clean: rain or filtered. The container must be wrapped with dark paper and the plants are sent to a cool place for the cold period. All this time, they monitor the level of the liquid and top it up in a timely manner. After the first roots appear, fertilizer is added. For example, "Kornevin".

How to choose a good, healthy plant in the store

Flowers bought in a hypermarket require special care, which sometimes cannot be provided at home.

The success of growing hyacinth in a pot directly depends on the quality of the seed. In order to avoid mistakes, the following rules are recommended.

  1. For forcing, use bulbs with a diameter of at least 50 mm. If hyacinths are to be grown in the garden, a smaller seed will do.
  2. Depending on the variety, the maximum permissible bulb diameter for growing hyacinth in a pot is 40–60 mm.

Requirements to appearance and the quality of the seed:

  • lack of rot and mechanical damage;
  • smooth surface;
  • absence of traces of damage by pests and diseases;
  • structure that is firm to the touch.

Important! The main criterion for choosing a hyacinth for growing in a pot is the ratio of the diameter of the bulb to its bottom. It should be 1.5-1.6: 1. This ratio is much lower for unsuitable seed.

The purchased flower was brought home, how should you care for it?

Usually, blooming hyacinths are not transplanted, but this rule does not apply to plants purchased in garden stores.

The hyacinth bulb can be purchased at any time of the year. If there is no intention to immediately send it for distillation, then place it in a cool place for storage at a temperature of 6–9 ° C. This will halt growth processes and initiate a period of dormancy. If a potted bulb is purchased, it is placed in a well-lit area for forcing.

Is it worth replanting from a store pot

As for whether it is necessary to transplant hyacinth from a store pot, the opinions of flower growers differ. Some believe that it is undesirable to injure the flower with a transplant. Others do not see any danger to the plant in this process. In order to decide what to do next, the situation is assessed according to several parameters:

  • flower condition: rooted bulb, there are sprouts, blooms;
  • pot size;
  • what will be done with the plant after it has faded.

Most often, hyacinths are sold in their best marketable form: flowering. At the same time, the bulbs are planted in such small containers that the soil is almost invisible. Vegetation of plants in such conditions is supported by watering with chemicals. As soon as this process stops, the flower may die. Therefore, in order to preserve the life of a flower, after purchase, hyacinth must be transplanted into a pot with soil, regardless of whether it blooms or not. If it is purchased in a container with a sufficient amount of substrate, it is better to refrain from transplanting. After the hyacinth has faded, the bulb is dug up and sent to a dormant period.

Conditions for growing hyacinth in a pot

Try not to put hyacinths on windowsills, where there is a high probability of drying out from radiators.

The hyacinth pot is placed in any bright, warm place. Closeness to heating devices is undesirable: radiators and various heaters. For normal vegetation, the plant needs room temperature.

During the ripening period of the buds, hyacinth can be illuminated in the evenings with an incandescent or fluorescent lamp. Optimum temperature for flowering - 20 ° C. Watering should be moderate but constant. Do not allow the soil to dry out. It is important to exclude the ingress of water on upper part bulbs and leaf axils.

Therefore, water is poured at the edge of the pot. This will inevitably cause gradual erosion of the substrate. In order to avoid this, the container with the flower is periodically turned. It is also useful for the stem of the plant to grow upright. If necessary (if the soil is not nutritious enough), fertilizing with mineral fertilizers is possible.

The conditions listed above are considered ideal for growing hyacinths in a pot. But it is not always possible to provide them. However, do not worry about this: hyacinth is quite unpretentious and will definitely bloom at room temperature and normal room lighting.

What care to provide hyacinth after flowering

Inexperienced growers are at a loss as to what to do with hyacinth after it has faded. It all depends on whether you intend to get another full-fledged plant from this bulb. If not, the flower is dug up and thrown away. But you can do another way: dig up the onion and transplant it into the garden. Here she will rest and give new flowers, subject to proper care.

If there is an intention to engage in reproduction and further cultivation of hyacinths, proceed as follows.

  1. When the plant has faded, the flower is cut.
  2. Moderate watering and feeding are continued until the leaves remaining on the trunk wither. During this period, the bulb will gradually increase in size and children may appear.
  3. Next, the bulb is removed from the soil and cleaned of dried leaves. If there are children, separate them.
  4. Those bulbs that have faded after distillation are not suitable for re-use. But they can be planted in the ground in a flower bed or in a garden.

The maximum "lifespan" of hyacinth bulbs is 10 years. All this time they give flowers once every 1-2 years.

Landing in open ground

The coachman plant hyacinth bulbs only when they want to get a lush bloom

On average, hyacinths bloom for 1.5–2 weeks. At the final stage, drying of the peduncle and leaves is observed. From this point on, watering is gradually reduced and completely stopped after the flower dries.

Attention! You can not cut off the green mass and flowers before they dry, since during this period there is an outflow nutrients into the onion.

The peeled onion is planted in the ground at a temperature of + 20-30 ° C. The optimal period is the first half of autumn. Planting is carried out to a depth of 10–12 cm on dense heavy soils and 12–15 cm on loose and light soils.

  1. A hole is formed with the appropriate depth.
  2. Pour a layer of sand 1–2 cm on the bottom.
  3. The distance between the bulbs is 8-9 cm.
  4. Before freezing, cover the planting site with a 10 cm layer of mulch.

Diseases and pests

Like any other plant, this flower can be affected various diseases and pests. The following are most common when growing hyacinths in pots.

Yellow bacterial rot

With the disease, the leaves of the plant are affected, and then the bulbs (in the photo is an orchid)

The disease is accompanied by liquefaction of the bulb, pronounced unpleasant odor, cessation of plant growth. On the initial stage lesions with yellow rot on the leaves appear gray spots.

The disease is caused pathogenic microorganisms located in contaminated soil. Signs of illness:

  • brown shallow depressions on flowers and leaves;
  • the tips of the leaves are covered with mycelium, become thinner and destroyed;
  • roots rot.

Decay processes are accelerated when the air temperature rises.

Mosaic

First the leaves dry out, and then the whole plant

Chaotically spaced elongated light green spots appear on leaves and flowers. The affected areas begin to turn yellow and dry. Plant growth slows down. Death is possible.

Gray rot

Gray rot leads to the death of the bulbs (pictured is a tulip bulb)

Most often it affects plants during the period of the beginning of growth. The disease is characterized by education yellow spots, which gradually increase in size and acquire a brown color. Rotting of the roots begins quite quickly. The plant dies.

Pests

When grown outdoors, the most dangerous pests for hyacinths are aphids and thrips. They take the sap from the plant, which leads to the drying of flowers and leaves. For the prevention of damage, spraying with aphicides is carried out. The most effective are Fitoverm, Akarin, Akkord.

Reproduction of hyacinths at home

In nature, hyacinth reproduces by children. Moreover, the bulbs grow them for a very long time: 3-5 years. For obvious reasons, for home breeding this method is of little use. Over the years of breeding bulbous flowers, several optimal methods for their reproduction have been found:

  • seeds;
  • children;
  • cuttings;
  • cutting out the bottom;
  • by dissecting the bulb (propagation by scales).

The most laborious and time consuming is the first method of reproduction: by seeds. It is most often used if you want to get flowers of a rare variety, the bulbs of which are not for sale.

Reproduction by children

Reproduction by children is the simplest

Highly productive, most commonly used method. Beneficial for several reasons:

  • the first flowering is obtained in the third year after planting;
  • all traits of the parent plant are inherited;
  • high survival rate.

Stimulation of the formation of children is carried out by crosswise incising the bottom of the mother's bulb.

Cuttings

Cuttings are harvested during the period of bud formation.

  1. Choose a leaf with a handle and cut it as close to the trunk of the plant as possible.
  2. The cut is treated with a disinfecting and growth-stimulating drug.
  3. Planted in a container with a substrate or under a film.

After 3-4 weeks, rooting occurs. After 50-60 days, the first shoots of a new plant appear. In the first two years, the bulb is not dug up, it is left to winter under a thick layer of mulch.

Cutting the bottom

This method is best used by experienced florists.

This propagation method uses large bulbs. The sequence of actions is as follows:

  • wash the seed from soil residues;
  • laid to dry for 5-7 days;
  • with a sharpened knife, cut out the bottom of the bulbs so that a cone-shaped hole is obtained;
  • the place of the cut on the bulb and the cut out bottom is treated with a fungicide solution (you can use crushed charcoal);
  • the cut-out bottoms are laid with a cut up and covered with plastic wrap.

The first babies with a diameter of 5-10 mm appear after 2-3 months. If the air temperature allows (not lower than + 30 ° C), you can land in the ground.

Dissecting the onion

This propagation method requires dense, large bulbs. Using a sharp knife, they are divided into 5-6 pieces. Each slice is disassembled into scales. All sections are treated with a disinfectant. The resulting seed is stored in plastic bags... In the first month at a temperature of + 20–25 ° С, in the second - + 17–20 ° С.

If you wish, you can grow beautiful hyacinths in a pot at home. This will help detailed instructions for each stage of preparation and germination of seed, care for a flowering plant.

Many people want to pamper loved ones with fresh fragrant flowers for the winter holidays. For this, planting hyacinths at home is best suited. These delicate plants one of the first to bloom on spring garden... But not everyone knows that they can be planted at home and, providing proper care, achieve gorgeous flowering in the cold season.

Preparing the bulbs for planting

Majority bulbous plants can be planted in a pot on a windowsill. Hyacinth is no exception. In order for it to bloom at home, you need to select the largest and healthiest bulbs for planting.

The most popular varieties for home cultivation:

  • "Lady Pink";
  • "Aida";
  • "Yang boss";
  • "Aqua";
  • "Odysseus".

When a hyacinth bud appears in the flowerbed in the spring, it is tedious to carefully cut it off. Then he will use all his strength to form the bulb. In June, these hyacinths are dug from the garden garden and the tubers are properly prepared for planting. The procedure requires patience and some knowledge.

  1. Choose large, dense bulbs. It is desirable that they are at least 5 cm in diameter, without the slightest damage and traces of the disease.
  2. Then they are laid out for a week to dry in a shady, well-ventilated place at an air temperature of about 20 degrees.
  3. Then you need to separate all the "kids" from the tuber, clean the dead scales and roots.

The subsequent care of the bulbs is as follows: they must be left in a dark room for 3 months, while ensuring proper storage.

  • In the first 2 months, hyacinths should be at a temperature of 25-26 C.
  • In the third month, they should be moved to a room from 17 C.
  • After that, hold for 3 days in a cool place, where the temperature ranges from 5 to 6 C, and then start planting in pots.

In order for hyacinths to bloom well at home, it is important to observe temperature regime... Novice florists sometimes fail to take care of the bulbs in this way, so they buy planting material in the store. They sell tubers that have already passed all stages of development.

Planting in pots

Boarding time indoor hyacinths depends on when you want to see flowering. If you are planning it on New Year, should be planted in the middle of the first month of autumn. You can get a bouquet of flowers on March 8 by planting tubers in last days October.

You will need wide, low pots. They can hold several bulbs. Place a layer of drainage on the bottom, then put soil. You can purchase a ready-made earthen mixture or prepare it yourself. You will need to take leaf, sod, compost soil, peat and sand in the same proportion. Stir and use. Pour on top of the pots thin layer sand. It will not allow plant roots to rot at home.

  1. Make small indentations and place the hyacinth bulbs a few centimeters apart.
  2. Sprinkle them lightly with sand so that the tops of the tubers are on the surface.

Now the plants must be left alone for 2.5 months. The pots should be taken to a basement or other place where the air temperature fluctuates between 5 and 7 C. They should be in complete darkness. If the room is light, cover the pots with paper sheets.

Care during this period involves regular, moderate watering. Be sure to keep the ground dry. If the planting is carried out correctly, the tubers will root well and subsequently bloom beautifully at home.

What to do next?

At the end of the second month, hyacinths release small green arrows in a cold room. When they stretch up to 3 cm in height, they need to be taken out into the light for more warm room... Place the pots on a loggia or veranda where the temperature is cool enough. The optimal level is 12-15 degrees. In such conditions, the plant should gain strength for a month, and eventually buds will begin to form on it. Now it can be brought in and placed in a warm room in a permanent place. Flowers feel good in a lighted area of the house, which is protected from drafts and temperature drops.

  1. Hyacinth care in indoor conditions simple. Put them away from heating appliances and provide an average temperature of about 20 degrees.
  2. Moisten the soil in time, but try not to flood the plant too much so that water does not stagnate in the pot.
  3. It is advisable to provide additional lighting so that the pots are illuminated for at least 10 hours a day.
  4. After a week, the buds are fully formed and flowering begins, which continues at home for about 7-10 days.
  5. Keep the room cool so the flowers will last longer.

During active flowering, hyacinth sometimes begins to lean sideways and can break off. This happens because the peduncle is too heavy. To avoid this, place a support around the pot to support the flower.

Gardeners call the stages of preparation of hyacinths for flowering in winter "forcing". If, out of inexperience, you did something wrong, this does not mean that the plant will not bloom. It's just that the flowers will be smaller, they will fall off faster, the leaves will stretch up too much and begin to lean to the ground. The main thing is to withstand cold period after planting in pots. Without it, flowers are unlikely to be able to release buds.

How to plant hyacinth in water?

IN recent times it has become fashionable to plant hyacinths in a container of water. To do this, you need to prepare the tubers, as for planting in the ground. Then, for each bulb, you need to take a glass container, fill it with filtered or spring water and place the plant there. In this case, it is important to ensure that the tuber does not completely sink into the liquid. It is necessary that only the bottom of the bulb is in contact with the water. Hyacinths need to rest in a cool, dark place and wait for them to sprout.

Care at this time consists in the timely addition of water to the container. Try to keep it from evaporating and keep the roots of the bulb moist at all times. When the green arrows begin to sprout, you can gradually add mineral fertilizers to the liquid.

After 2.5 months, the sprouts of indoor hyacinths must be taken out to a bright room and provided with the same care as for flowers in pots.

Top dressing

The soil is quickly depleted, so growing hyacinths at home will not be successful without regular feeding. It must be done several times, starting from the moment the first leaves appear.

Good care is provided by the Fertimix product. This fertilizer has a balanced content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. In addition to them, the preparation contains vitamins B1, PP and B6. All these elements are vital for hyacinths.

  1. For feeding, put a liter in the jar pure water and dilute 2 caps of the drug in it.
  2. To make flowering longer, it is allowed to increase the dose and use 3 caps of "Fertimix".
  3. Water the flower pots twice a month.

Such home care will provide hyacinths with nutritious nutrition, improve their growth and flowering.

How to prevent flower disease

To make the hyacinth resistant to various diseases, you need to be careful about the choice of planting material and be sure to check that there are no traces of rot on it. For the prevention of fungal diseases, planting in the ground should not be carried out without preprocessing tubers with fungicides. Can be used liquid agent"Dr. Foley".

The main reason for the appearance yellow leaves and the slow development of a plant at home is considered improper care... Be careful when watering the hyacinth. Water should not come into contact with the bulb and leaves of the flower. Otherwise, rotting of the tuber may begin. Pour water near the edge of the pot, gently saturating the soil.

How to care after flowering?

When lush buds droop, they should be cut sharp knife and throw it away. The hyacinth itself, continue to feed and provide it complete care... Do this until the leaves wither. Then remove the tuber from the pot, remove the dry shoots and dry the bulb well. It is no longer possible to plant it indoors. After "distillation" the plant is very depleted and will not withstand the repeated procedure.

Plant it in the garden in the fall. Outdoors, the hyacinth will recover and bloom again next year.

Due to the beauty and amazing tenderness of hyacinths, their cultivation is popular in many countries. In the spring, people are happy to take care of flowers in the flower beds, and in the fall they begin “forcing” at home in order to decorate their homes with bright summer colors in winter.

When growing indoor plants, many questions often arise. Especially if the plant first appeared in the house and its owner does not know how to care for it. And especially if this is not an ordinary houseplant, but one that can be grown both in the garden and at home, such as hyacinth.

Home care is definitely different from garden hyacinth care. This is not to say that one of them is simpler, and the other is more difficult, but each has its own secrets. We will try to answer the most FAQ that arise when growing hyacinth at home.

1. How to grow hyacinths at home?

Since hyacinth is still garden plant, he needs to create conditions as close as possible to garden ones.
To grow hyacinths in room conditions, you will need bulbs specially prepared for forcing, that is, those that have already passed summer period rest. They should be healthy, dense, without damage, with a diameter of 5 cm.

2. Can hyacinth be grown as a houseplant?

If you think that hyacinth can live in a pot all the time, and every year please you with its flowers, then, unfortunately, you are mistaken.

Bulbs are only used for home forcing.

Forcing is the application of a specific set of measures to accelerate plant growth.

In fact, this is a human whim. Such a phenomenon as distillation does not exist in nature.

It follows from this that in the process of forcing the bulbs are greatly depleted, they simply do not have enough strength to bloom again (forcing) at home.

Therefore, after distillation, hyacinth bulbs are planted in open ground for 1-2 years for recovery.

3. How to adjust the flowering of hyacinths to a certain date?

There are several dozen varieties of hyacinth. The difference between varieties exists not only in color, but also in the timing of flowering. Knowing approximate scheme calculation of terms, you can adjust the flowering of hyacinth to a specific date, holiday.

Early distillation is considered to be the bloom of hyacinth at the end of December, and for this it is used early varieties... Medium distillation - flowering in late January - early February. Late distillation - bloom in March-April.

4. Hyacinths - planting and care

The bulbs can be planted one at a time or three per pot. Select the capacity according to the size of the bulbs, they should "sit" almost closely to each other - the distance between the bulbs is 2-2.5 cm.

At the bottom of the pot, a drainage layer is required, you can use a sand layer of 2-3 cm. For the substrate, take peat and sand, or compost and sand. The tip of the bulb (⅓ part) must stick out above the ground and must not be completely buried. The surface of the substrate can be covered with another 0.5-1 cm layer of sand to prevent decay.

To make the peduncles stronger, a 0.2% solution of calcium nitrate can be used for watering after planting. Then the pots with bulbs are placed for 6-10 weeks in a dark, cool place, with an air temperature of +5 ... +9 ° С. It can be closed from light with a black bag. This is necessary to create the same conditions as in the garden in the fall.

And after a couple of months, you can "arrange spring" hyacinth. Home care is not difficult. Read more about distillation and what a "home spring" should be for hyacinth in the article "Hyacinth at home».

5. How to water the hyacinth?

Hyacinths love moist soil, but do not like stagnant water, from which the bulbs begin to rot. In order to prevent stagnation of liquid in the pot, there must be a drainage layer in it, and the water remaining after watering must be drained. When watering, avoid getting water on the buds, bulbs and axils of the leaves. Alternatively, pour water into the sump.

When the hyacinth bulbs are at the cooling stage, then it is especially important to control the moisture content of the substrate - in no case should it dry out. How often you need to water depends on the moisture level.

If the air humidity in the room is 90-95%, then with late forcing, 2 waterings will be required, with medium - 1 watering (late December - early January), and with early forcing, watering may not be necessary at all.

6. Can hyacinths be driven out in water?

Yes, when forcing it is not at all necessary to use the usual substrate, you can put the bulbs in a container with water. The container should be high with a wide neck. The water level should not reach the bottom of the bulb by 1-2 cm.
The forcing rules for such bulbs are the same as in the soil version - they must be protected from light (with black paper) and placed in the cold. Periodically, instead of evaporated water, you can add complex fertilizer. For example, take potassium nitrate, potassium phosphate and magnesium sulfate in a ratio of 300: 500: 200 mg / l.

When the cooling period ends, the bulbs are given a higher temperature, but the sprouts are still kept in the dark. Cover them with an opaque cap and do not remove it until the sprouts reach a length of 10 cm.

7. Why does the hyacinth have a short peduncle?

It so happens that the hyacinth develops a very short peduncle, and the flowers begin to bloom, being in the rosette of leaves. There are at least three explanations for this:

a) Insufficient watering;
b) A short rest period. It must last at least 90-95 days;
c) Too heat and bright light immediately after the cooling period.

In the first few days after cooling, it is necessary to maintain the temperature at 10-12 ° C and keep the bulbs not in a dark, but shaded place. And only when the sprouts are about 10 cm, raise the temperature to 22 ° C and provide bright lighting.

8. Hyacinth - transplant

About transplanting hyacinth, as in the case of conventional indoor plants, it is not accepted to say, since the bulbs are so every year dug out of the ground to pass the dormant period.

9. Why do the peduncles and leaves fall out of the bulb?

Let's imagine the following situation for a moment. Your hyacinths already have quite large leaves, and the peduncle is still hiding in them. To check if everything is in order, you move the leaves apart, examine them and ... oh, horror! The flower stalk, along with the leaves, remained in your hands, and there is a hole in the bulb.

This can happen if:

a) The bulb has already begun to rot;
b) The temperature regime was violated during the storage period of the bulbs;
c) During the cooling period, the earthen coma was overdried.

10. When can hyacinth babies be separated?

Children are usually separated before the onset of the rest period. But this can only be done if they are easily separated. Before the procedure, the mother bulb is dried for several days.

Small bulbs are planted for growing only in open ground, they are not suitable for forcing. And they will begin to bloom in 3-4 years. If the babies do not separate, the mother's bulb is planted with them.

I quote Eugene:

I quote Eugene:

Hello, today I bought hyacinths in the market. Three bulbs in one pot, they have not bloomed yet, they said in three days, but they need to be transplanted into different pots. Or is it possible not to transplant, but after they have faded, to plant in the garden? How can I be, tell me, please!

If the bulbs are very cramped, there is little land and they stick to the same roots, then a transplant is necessary by the method of transshipment and adding the missing soil.
Separate planting is optional, but the new pot should be large enough so that the bulbs do not touch each other or the edge of the pot. Do not deepen the neck of the bulbs when planting. You can fill up to half the onion, and after flowering, fill up the soil.
However, if there is enough soil, and the hyacinth has not yet bloomed, then it is better not to touch it. Let them bloom calmly and cut off the flower stalks.

Hyacinth, one of the most fragrant and eye-pleasing flowers. By itself it street flower and therefore at home there is an opportunity to do forcing (in nature such a concept does not exist, these are conditions artificially created by man). At this moment, when this operation will be carried out and the flowering itself, it will be possible to call room period.

For flower lovers, in order for the room period to last longer, it is necessary to follow a few simple rules:

  1. The very first and most important rule is strong and healthy bulbs. When selecting bulbs, you should pay attention to their diameter. They should be firm and large to the touch.
  2. Before forcing, the bulbs must go through a dormant period of three months or more.
  3. The bulb must not be completely placed in a pot and covered with earth.
  4. Drainage is required at the bottom of the flowerpot.
  5. Watering should be done strictly from the pallet.

And now about these rules in more detail.

Rest period and bulb selection

After the bulbs have been dug out of the ground, well dried and kept in a cool place all the time, they can be taken out in order to new year holidays in addition to poinsettia, hyacinth smelled fragrant and delighted with its beauty in the house.

Bulbs should be checked well before planting. They should be elastic, not showing signs of illness. Their diameter can be 5 or more centimeters. If the bulb is smaller, this means that the plant is still young and not ready for distillation. Most likely, a flower will probably not appear from such a bulb, or if it does appear, it will be ugly.

Novice growers should remember that each variety has its own forcing period. Varieties for early forcing, give their color in December, medium forcing - January, February. With late distillation, it blooms from March to April.

Preparation and landing

Growing hyacinths is an exciting and time-consuming activity. This requires patience and desire. First of all, you need to know that forcing is an unnatural phenomenon, but artificially created by man. During this procedure, the bulb is severely depleted and for such artificial cultivation it will not work the next year. After distillation, the bulb is always transplanted into open ground and left there for two to three years. Thus, the hyacinth is gaining strength.

What is needed for landing:

  1. Special small pot
  2. Garden shovel
  3. Drainage
  4. Sand
  5. Mix of earth

At the bottom of the pot, in which it is planned to plant hyacinths, a small layer of expanded clay or sand is laid out, if desired. Then an earthen mixture of peat and sand is poured. With the help of a garden spatula, a recess is made into which the bulb is inserted and sprinkled with an earthen mixture on top. After the onion is placed, it is added dropwise, but not completely, otherwise, during distillation, it may rot or get sick. Sometimes the ground is covered with a layer of sand of about 2 centimeters on top. After landing in the ground, the forcing process begins.

Distillation

Hyacinth care is simple. But it is imperative to follow the rules for growing at home to get a fragrant peduncle.

After planting, hyacinths must be placed in a cool room and observe the temperature regime (5 - 9 degrees Celsius). If you have a cellar or basement flowers can be put there. For those who have space in the refrigerator, hyacinth can be put there, but only in the vegetable compartment. For hyacinths, it is necessary to create conditions as similar as possible to those in the garden in the fall. For a complete autumn picture, the plants are best covered with a black bag. Hyacinth care during this period is minimal.

Within 6 - 9 weeks it is necessary to check the soil; it must be moist. In such conditions, the plant will begin to grow actively. As soon as the first shoots appear on the flower, and they are about 5 centimeters, the flower must be transferred to a less cool place. Among flower growers, such a time is called artificial spring. Hyacinths are exhibited in a room where the temperature is 10-13 degrees Celsius and it is darkened. Immediately bringing the hyacinth into a warm room will not be stressful for him, and it may die or the peduncles will be of poor quality. The flower must be in this room before the buds appear. As soon as the first buds appear, proper care provides that the hyacinth must be brought into a room where there are no drafts, in which the temperature does not rise above 20 degrees.

Proper hyacinth care

Growing and caring for hyacinths at home is simple, but painstaking, but the result exceeds all expectations.

After blooming, the hyacinth will be fragrant at home for about two weeks. Then, unfortunately, the flowers will start to fade.

While the flowers are blooming, it is necessary to add liquid fertilizer to watering once every three days for flowering plants... Flowers love care and constant watering. Water must be added to the pan, so the bulb will receive moisture and will not rot. Due to the fact that at home it is often not possible to maintain the necessary humidity, therefore, hyacinths should be watered every day.

After the hyacinths have faded, watering should be minimized, and then stopped. Then, when all the leaves are dry, cut them off, and transplant the onion onto private plot for two to three years, and then dig it up again in the spring and give a dormant period for growing and care at home.

Caring for fragrant plants can be extended by choosing varieties in a way that will delight you with their flowering in turn. Then you can create a miniature garden at home.
