When is the best time to plant tulips - mid-autumn or early spring? When to plant tulips? When to plant tulips before winter.

When to plant tulips? Autumn? Or maybe it can be done in the spring? How to plant them correctly? How deep should the bulbs be planted? How our flower garden will look in spring depends on the answers to these questions.

Tulips - bulbous plants... It is best to plant them in the fall. In the Kuban best terms this is mid-October, and for central Russia - a month earlier.

How to plant tulips in autumn

They are one of the first to bloom when other flowers have not yet emerged or even not yet planted. They look very beautiful in bloom when planted in heaps, groups. How bigger group, so best experience it produces. How to arrange them will tell you the taste, as well as the space allocated for landing.

Soil preparation

I will not tell you any secret if I say that before planting tulips, you need to prepare the soil. It is best to do this two weeks before planting. What kind of soil do these flowers like? Loose, fertile. The place where they will grow must necessarily be sunny.

If the soil is dry, then first it must be well moistened, and only then only dig it up.

If you have dense soil on the site, then add sand to the hole or trench before planting - flowers love loose soil. I also add wood ash - this is at the same time good fertilizer, and additional protection from various diseases... Alkaline soil is more suitable for tulips, and ash just acidifies the soil well.

Regardless of how you arrange the bulbs - in rows or in heaps, I advise you to sprinkle them with a small amount of humus or compost, and cover them with earth on top.

And do not forget, they need the sun, and the breeze, so as not to bother. If the site is at least partially closed from the sun, then the stems will stretch out, thin out, bend, and the bulbs will not be able to accumulate a sufficient supply of food for themselves.

The plot must be flat with good subsoil. The roots of tulips go to a depth of a little more than half a meter, so if your groundwater is close, the bulbs will get wet and die. In this case, you will have to plant tulips on a dais.

Processing the bulbs before planting

When we dug out tulips in the summer after flowering, we dried them well, sorted them out. Large bulbs separately - we will plant them in the most conspicuous place - they will bloom, delight us. Small or medium-sized ones will not bloom in the spring, therefore, as experts advise, it is better to plant them in an inconspicuous, but sunny place.

This is how I sort the bulbs, after drying into three parts - large, medium, small.

From medium bulbs next summer we will get large ones with a laid flower arrow. And from small ones - we get medium ones. That is, it may take at least two seasons for young babies to bloom.

I plant tulips not in rows, but in round meadows. It seems to me that this way they will look more natural.

Unfortunately tulips are prone to fungal diseases... Therefore, before planting them, the bulbs should be kept for at least half an hour in a solution of some fungicide, for example, Maxim, Fitosporin or a weak solution of manganese.

Planting tulips in the ground or baskets for bulbs

Convenient planting aid - plastic baskets with a lattice bottom. They are convenient in that they help to form flower arrangements in a flower bed, facilitate the process of digging out the bulbs after flowering. Usually you can buy special baskets with a height of 6-7 cm. The average height of a large onion is 4-5 cm. This means that the hole should have a depth of 12-15 cm.

For several years now I have been using special for planting in the fall plastic baskets for bulbous. But I always have a lot of tulips, so I use plus for baskets plastic boxes for vegetables, but not high, but with the lowest sides.

The time to dig tulips out of the ground in summer is spent with this method of planting much less. There are practically no remains that have not been dug or accidentally left behind. There are no even damaged ones with a shovel or a pitchfork, since I actually dig out a box or basket, and only then I shake the contents out onto the ground.

I really like this method of planting tulips. Even if I sometimes do not have time to dig the bulbs in time in the summer, I leave them not dug for another year, then I am sure that they will not go deeper, they will not go anywhere.

If you are planting bulbs without baskets, that is good helper- a cone with a measuring scale, the purpose of which is to dig holes of a given depth.

Well, if you don't have baskets or a cone, it doesn't matter. You can do without them. In the area where I planned to plant them, I dig round or rectangular holes.

When planting tulips, you need to know the basic rule. Planting depth should be three times the height of the bulb.

This depth guarantees good flowering, the appearance of a large onion, strong, not very small children. A shallower planting will give you a small flower and thus a smaller bulb.

According to agrotechnical rules, there should be a distance of 10-15 cm between the bulbs. But flowering tulips, located close to each other, like a living bouquet, look purely aesthetically more beautiful. If you dig up the bulbs every year (experts advise you to do this), then do not be afraid to plant them with a distance of 5-6 cm from each other.

How to water tulips

Now a little about watering. Do I need to water the newly planted bulbs? It all depends on the moisture content of the soil. If the soil is wet, then watering is not necessary. But in the case of landing in dry soil, you need to shed a hole or groove well.

Regularly, abundantly, tulips should be watered during the period of active growth, during budding, flowering, especially in dry years. Moisture should penetrate to the root depth (0.5 m), and not just wet the ground. After flowering, watering stops.

Is it possible to plant tulip bulbs in spring

Usually best time autumn is considered for planting bulbs. But in February-March, the planted bulbs also take root well. It should only be remembered that the daytime temperature should reach + 8-10 ° C.

Fertilizing tulips when planting, during the growing season, after flowering

Ordinary tulips are practically not whimsical. It is enough to add ash, humus or compost to the hole when planting.

But for varietal ones, a more thorough inspection is needed. They need to be fed mineral fertilizers 2-3 times per season.

The first feeding can be done even in the snow - scatter dry fertilizer - about 2 tablespoons per 1 sq. m.

The second top dressing is after the emergence of seedlings. The complete mineral fertilizer Kemira Universal is best suited. Prepare the solution according to the instructions, water the seedlings of tulips at the rate of 2-3 buckets per 1 sq. m.

The third time I advise you to feed after flowering, but no later than 2 weeks later. Dissolve 1 Matchbox any phosphorus-potassium fertilizer in a bucket of water, for example, potassium monophosphate. Pour the solution over the tulips that have lost their color.

How to grow large tulips

When we sorted the bulbs, we knew that only large ones would bloom next year. The size of the flower depends on the size of the bulbs, however, varietal characteristics still play a role here.

I will share one secret of how to get large bulbs and, as a result, large flowers. This is sometimes important when you are looking to propagate a wonderful variety, or when you are selling bulbs. Professionals use a term like decapitation - removing flower heads. I also advise you to use this technique.

How to properly decapitate? Let the flower bloom, admire its beauty. Make sure that varietal characteristics are present, there is no curvature of the stem, that is, the flower is healthy. Remove the flower 3-4 days after the bud opens. In this case, the mass of the onion by the time of digging will increase by 30-40%.

Many flower growers prefer to plant tulips in autumn period... In this case in early spring you can get abundant flowering. When landing in winter, it is very important to follow all the recommendations of specialists and experienced florists.

Planting tulips in winter is especially important in middle lane Russia. It is necessary to plant tulips in the autumn in order to provide "rest" for the bulbs., as well as improving rooting and accelerating growth processes in babies replacing the bulb. It is possible to activate the development of the aboveground part of the plant in spring if the time of planting the planting material is correctly determined. Late planting allows the bulb to retain well all the nutrients accumulated during the growing season.

Now many experienced flower growers are guided by the "Indian summer", after which there is a noticeable cold snap, which allows planting such decorative crops as daffodils, tulips and crocuses. The soil during this period is rather moist and not yet too frozen, therefore, the bulbs have time to adapt well before the onset of severe frosts and build up a sufficiently powerful root system before the onset of the first severe frosts.

Planting tulips in winter is especially important in central Russia.

Typical average winter planting times:

  • in the suburbs and Leningrad region- in the second half of September;
  • in the Middle Urals - during September 10-20;
  • in the South Urals - from September 20 to October 10;
  • in Siberia - from August 20 to September 10.

Important to remember, that too early landing becomes the main cause of the death of planting material. It is best to focus on soil and climatic conditions as well as the characteristics of the land in the flower beds. In most regions, planting takes place on the last day of October or the first week of November.

By the spring period, all systems of such tulips have time to form very well, including the embryonic or daughter bulbs, which, using nutrition from the mother bulb, are able to gain sufficient strength, which guarantees early and abundant flowering.

Timing and technology of planting tulip bulbs in autumn

You can plant tulips before winter at different times. In regions characterized by late and not too cold winters, ornamental crops can be planted throughout October, and during a warm autumn period even in November.

How to properly plant tulips before winter in the Moscow region and the Leningrad region

It would be most correct to plant the bulbs based on the weather conditions, with strict adherence to the following simple recommendations:

  • temperature regime when planting to a depth of 10 cm, the soil should be approximately 6-9 ° C, which will allow to obtain good development the root system, and less intensive development will be with a deviation from these indicators by 3-4 ° C;
  • the formation of the root system and the rudiments of flowers and leaves takes about a month, therefore it is recommended during this time to prevent deep freezing of the soil in flower beds;
  • if the positive temperature regime lasts longer than a month, then there may be signs of germination of the planting material, therefore it is important to cover the sprouts from possible frost using spruce branches or non-woven covering materials.

In the middle zone of our country, including the Moscow region and the Leningrad region, you can land from last days September and until the second decade of October.

Plant planting material need after preliminary preparation

Technology and features of planting tulip bulbs in the Urals and Siberia

Planting tulips before winter in the Urals and Siberia - a procedure that has some of its own characteristics:

  • it is necessary to plant the planting material after preliminary preparation, about three to four weeks before the onset of a strong autumn cold snap, which will allow the ornamental culture to form a strong and well-developed root system;
  • planting too early under high temperature conditions not only causes rapid rooting, but can also provoke active vegetation and the appearance of unwanted seedlings;
  • too late planting does not allow the planting material to adapt in the soil and the bulbs die as a result of freezing of the soil.

In order to correctly determine the moment of planting, it is very important to carefully observe the weather conditions in the region. It is necessary to carry out planting work after the first frosts appear, and the temperature regime of the air will drop to minus 3 ° С. It is during this period that the temperature of the soil drops to optimal values at 7-8 ° C. As a rule, in Siberia and the Urals, this temperature is typical for mid-September, but in different years optimal timing may well shift in one direction or another.

How to plant tulips in autumn in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine

Autumn planting of tulips, in contrast to spring planting, can guarantee the earliest emergence of seedlings and abundant flowering in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. The very first and most important point in such an event is the correct timing autumn planting... Early planted bulbs on warm autumn days can sprout, and, accordingly, then die from the winter cold.

Too much late boarding does not allow the planting material to take root well, but such a feature is not too scary for an ornamental culture, just spring flowering in this case will be a little late. However, it is important to remember that after planting in the fall, the tulip planting should be covered by winter period spruce branches or dry foliage, on which a layer of snow will lie.

How to store tulip bulbs (video)

To correctly determine the timing of the autumn planting, it is required from time to time to measure the temperature of the soil at a depth of 15 cm. If the temperature is stable and keeps at the level of 7-10 ° C, then you can start planting work. On the territory characterized by warm weather in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus, such periods are held at the end of September or the beginning of October.

Very important in the process of pre-planting preparation, reject all weak or diseased bulbs, and then treat them with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or with the help of a special antifungal drug. Depth depends on dimensions and is approximately three bulb heights. It is necessary to plant and plant planting material in areas represented by well-lit and protected from the wind places with a nutrient layer of soil at a level of 35-40 cm. Before planting, during the digging process, compost, wood ash and phosphates must be added. The average distance between the bulbs does not exceed 8-10 cm. It is also important to provide high-quality planting protection from all kinds of rodents.

The average distance between bulbs does not exceed 8-10 cm

Autumn care for tulips outdoors

Standard autumn care per decorative culture includes several mandatory activities. As a rule, it is no longer necessary to care for the bulbs planted in the fall this year. An exception is the abnormally dry autumn period, during which it will be necessary to make good water-charging irrigation.

After a stable sub-zero temperature regime is established, and the soil on the flower beds freezes to a sufficient depth of 4-5 cm, it is necessary to cover the plantings with tulips with a high-quality layer of mulching materials. Most often, mulch is represented by sawdust, peat chips, crushed tree bark or dry straw. In most regions with sufficient snow cover, a 3 to 5 cm layer of mulch is sufficient.

It is necessary to cover plantings with tulips with a high-quality layer of mulching materials

Mulching can be replaced with a slightly deeper planting. You should also remember about the risk of damage to the planting material by hungry rodents. In this case, it is recommended to use a variety of deterrents. Best proven sawdust or peat chips, which are soaked in creoline or kerosene before use, at the rate of 1 kg per bucket warm water... You can also use special baits based on bread flour mixed with ordinary cement or alabaster. Sometimes mousetraps or special traps for rodents are installed.

Autumn planting is not only a guarantee of obtaining the earliest and plentiful flowering of tulips, but also an excellent opportunity to minimize the time, effort and money spent on storing planting material throughout the winter. It is for this reason that experienced flower growers prefer autumn planting of bulbs.

When to plant tulips in the fall in the ground

Planting dates for tulips.

It takes at least four weeks to root the bulbs in the soil, and if tulips are planted late, the bulbs may not have time to grow roots before frost, and in spring your tulips will be late in blooming or not bloom at all. In any case, plants planted late in the ground will be weaker and more susceptible to disease. What month to plant tulips? Optimal timing planting tulips - the time period from late September to late October. However, both climatic and weather conditions in September in different regions can be very different, therefore, it is better to determine the time of planting tulips not by the calendar, but by the condition of the soil and weather. It is possible to plant tulip bulbs in the garden when the soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm is not higher and not lower than 7-8 ºC - at a lower or more high temperature it may be difficult to root the bulbs.

When to plant tulips in the fall in the suburbs.

Tulip bulbs should meet winter in the ground with a well-developed root system, but it should not be allowed that, having formed it, the bulbs continue their growing season and begin to grow leaves. Therefore, the answer to the question "When to plant tulips in the suburbs?" important for all gardeners in central Russia. Rooting of bulbs takes place at a temperature of 7-10 ºC, provided that it will not be colder than 3 ºC at night. Usually, such a temperature in the Moscow region lasts from the third decade of September to mid-October, therefore, planting tulips in the fall in the Moscow region is carried out around this time, unless, of course, the weather suddenly interferes with your plans.

When to plant tulips in autumn in the Leningrad region.

When to plant tulips before winter in St. Petersburg? In the Leningrad Region, tulips are planted in the ground at about the same time as in the Moscow Region - from the second half of September, when it’s Indian summer.

When to plant tulips in the fall in the Urals.

Planting tulips in the fall in the Urals depends on the region: in the Middle Urals, tulips can be planted from September 10 to 20, and in the South - until October 10.

When to plant tulips in autumn in Siberia.

In Siberia, the conditions for growing flowers are much more severe than even in the Urals, but, nevertheless, tulips grow in this region with frosty winters. In what month are tulips planted in autumn in Siberia? Frosts in these places come early, so planting tulips in August, in its last decade, is considered quite reasonable. And if autumn does not collapse from the first days of September, then you can plant the bulbs until the middle of the first autumn month.

Soil for tulips.

Before planting tulips, prepare a sunny, sheltered from the winds area with a low level. groundwater and loose neutral or slightly alkaline soil, preferably sandy. Heavy clayey soils diluted with sand.

Sour soil before planting the bulbs must be limed - add 200-500 g of chalk or hydrated lime for each m² of the area, depending on the level of acidity of the soil. It is advisable to dig deeply the land on the site, adding 100-150 g of wood ash, 2 buckets of peat (humus of two to three years old or compost), 50 g of superphosphate, 30 g of potassium sulfate and 25 g of ammonium nitrate for each m². But do not use fresh manure either as fertilizer or for subsequent mulching of the site, as this can lead to root burns and fungal diseases. Also, do not apply chlorine-containing mineral fertilizers to the area with tulips.

How deep to plant tulips.

To correctly position tulip bulbs in the ground, you need to follow this rule: the planting depth is equal to three diameters of the bulb. That is, small bulbs are immersed to a depth of 7-8 cm, and large ones - by 12-15 cm.But when planting, the composition of the soil should be taken into account: on light soils, bulbs are planted 2-3 cm deeper than normal, and on heavy soils - 3 cm smaller. When planted too deep, the bulbs almost do not form children, and if too shallow, they can suffer from frost.

Tulip bulbs should be carefully examined, damaged and diseased ones should be discarded, and dense, spotless bulbs should be selected for planting. For prophylaxis, immediately before planting in the ground, hold the bulbs for half an hour in a pink solution of potassium permanganate. If the fall is dry, spill holes or furrow before planting with water.

We are often asked how beautiful to plant tulips on the site. Everyone has their own idea of beauty, so it's up to you whether to plant tulips along garden paths, islands on the lawn or in a mixed flower bed in the vicinity of other spring flowers - muscari, spring flowers, hyacinths, crocuses and irises. Arrange the bulbs in a row at a distance of 8-10 cm from each other with at least 20-25 cm row spacing - on average, up to 50 large bulbs can be planted per square meter. Powder the onion when planting wood ash, place in a hole or furrow and make sure that an air pocket does not form under the bottom of the bulb - slightly press the bulb into the ground, then sprinkle on all sides with sand, and then with a mixture of peat and humus. After planting, compact the surface of the area and water it.

Grouping tulips by cultivar will make it easier for yourself to care for them. Small bulbs are planted closer to the south so that the flowers that have grown from large bulbs do not cover them from the sun.

Caring for tulips after planting

Caring for tulips in the fall.

You won't have to take care of the bulbs this year, except that in the event of an abnormally dry autumn, you will need to water the tulips, and when it settles subzero temperature and the soil will freeze to a depth of 4-5 cm, you will need to cover the tulip planting with mulching material - a layer of sawdust, peat, crushed bark or straw 3-5 cm thick.In the middle lane this happens in November, and in Siberia frosty days can be expected already in end of September.

Caring for tulips in winter.

In a winter with little snow, scrape around the yard and throw a small snowdrift on the tulips - under the snow tulips will be perfectly preserved in winter and will rise together in spring.

How to store tulips before planting in the fall

Keep the dug out bulbs clean, free of soil, excess roots and leaves. Place the dug out bulbs in a single layer in a drawer or box and hold on fresh air in the shade until they dry out - it is easier to clean off the soil, leaves and dead scales from dry bulbs. Before storage, pickle the bulbs in a pink solution of potassium permanganate - this way the plants will receive the manganese necessary for future flowers, and at the same time protection from diseases and pests. Store the bulbs in a wooden box with sawdust absorbing excess moisture, and it is advisable to wrap each onion in a piece of newspaper. The box is placed in a dry, cool room with good ventilation and an air temperature not exceeding 25 ºC. Towards autumn, the temperature is lowered to 20 ºC, and then to 15 ºC.

Tulips are one of the earliest spring flowers to appear in abundance in retail for the holiday of March Eighth, and after the snow melts, they begin to peep out of the warmed earth in private flower beds, in order to soon bloom with fragrant delicate flowers... If you finally decided to settle adorable tulips in your garden, you most likely have a logical question: when to plant tulips?

Nature will tell you the right answer

It would be logical to start planting bulbs in the spring, along with other flowers and vegetable crops... But it was not there! Most experienced flower growers unanimously say that autumn is the only suitable time to plant tulips. Although there are also supporters of spring planting, who can give many reasons why it is preferable to plant tulip bulbs in the ground in the spring. So all the same, when to plant tulips, and who is right?

Autumn is the only time to plant tulips.

To come to the right conclusion when it is best to plant tulips, you should pay attention to how these flowers grow in nature. Having understood the natural rhythm of life of wild-growing tulips, you can easily understand what the more delicate varietal flowers growing in flower beds want.

Video about correct fit tulips

Most of the tulip species are native to Central Asia. Here, wild tulips are found in rocky and sandy deserts, in arid mountain areas, foothills, on stony taluses, in rock crevices, as well as in the steppes. In early spring, the slopes of the mountains and deserts of Central Asia are a truly picturesque picture - blossoming tulips play bright colors in the sun, covering the earth with flowering carpets.

As soon as the spring heat turns into hot heat, tulips quickly fade, dry out, and all life in them is concentrated in the bulbs. The bulbs go deeper into the ground, and with the arrival of cool autumn weather, they form new roots in order to bloom again in the spring immediately after waking up.

Thus, tulips bloom in their natural environment only after a period of winter cooling, which is necessary for the formation of substances in the bulbs that affect the germination and flowering of the plant.

Tulips bloom in their natural environment only after a period of winter cooling.

The best time to plant tulips

The life cycle of cultivated tulips is the same as that of wild tulips, so the most suitable period when you need to plant tulips is autumn. Once in the ground, the bulbs manage to grow roots before frost, after which life freezes in them with the onset of winter. In the spring, a stem quickly peeps out from under the snow and behind a short time delicate buds are formed. At the end of flowering, the tulips are dug up, and the bulbs are sent for storage until the autumn planting.

Featured planting dates for tulips- from the second decade of September until last numbers October. The right time When to plant tulips depends on the region and local climate. So, in central Russia, bulbs are planted starting from the twenties of September, and in southern regions- from October.

The life cycle of cultivated tulips is the same as that of wild tulips.

You can determine when to plant tulips by soil temperature:

  • as soon as the soil temperature dropped to + 7 + 9 degrees at a depth of ten centimeters, it was time to start planting the bulbs;
  • if the temperature is higher, the bulbs will sprout, which will die during the first frost, and rooting will be worse;
  • at a lower soil temperature, the bulbs simply do not have time to root well before the onset of frost, which will lead to tulips lagging in growth in spring and to unsuccessful flowering.

Sufficient time for the rooting of the planted bulbs is about 20-30 days at optimum humidity soil and temperature in its upper layers up to +7 degrees.

Seedlings of tulips

But if for some reason the recommended dates were missed, when can tulips be planted in this case? According to experienced gardeners, it is possible to plant bulbs until the first days of December - this is still better than postponing planting in the spring. And so that the bulbs do not freeze, and the tulips did not lag behind in development in the spring, it is recommended to cover the flower bed with spruce branches, dry leaves or straw and sprinkle the top with snow.

Features of spring planting

It also happens that flower growers remember about the need to plant tulips only on the eve of spring. The time, although not the most successful, but now do not give up completely from these graceful flowers. Tulips planted in spring also grow, but begin to bloom much later. You can accelerate their flowering with a simple trick:

  • tulip bulbs, which or were recently bought, put in the refrigerator overnight (just not in the freezer!);
  • the next day, rinse with a pink solution of potassium permanganate;
  • plant the bulbs in the ground.

Video about methods of planting tulips

You need to plant tulips in open ground until April, but if frosts are still possible in your area at this time, first plant the bulbs in a container suitable size, and only then carefully transplant to the flower bed.

Most importantly, remember: no matter what time to plant tulips, agricultural techniques must be followed carefully, otherwise due to improper care the bulb of the plant grinds, and after it the stems and flowers will become smaller.

Bright tulips will make a luxurious flower garden from the simplest flower bed. But the opportunity to plant them before winter is not always the case. Don't be upset. Planting tulips in spring, like other bulbous flowers, is quite possible. If carried out correctly, then multi-colored hats will decorate private plot already this season.

Is it worth planting tulips in spring

In spring, those tulips that survived dimovka in the ground bloom profusely.

Most often, these cold-resistant bulbous plants are sent for wintering under a layer of soil. This is done in September-October. During the winter, tulips accumulate strength for abundant and long flowering in spring. But it is possible to land handsome men in March-April.

In cold regions and without distillation in pots, they will bloom only the next year: the flower bud should ripen.

At pre-landing in pots, or if the soil temperature allows the bulb to acclimatize, green pets will delight with flowering this season.

When planting tulips in spring directly into open soil, it is important to choose the right location for them. A flower bed with oriental beauties should be protected from the wind, well lit and warmed up by the spring sun. This will accelerate their growth and allow them to gain strength for rapid flowering.

Compared to "winter" tulips, those planted in spring will not bloom so luxuriantly and profusely, and the timing of the appearance of bright caps will be slightly late. But this has its plus: the flower bed will remain lush for a long time. Flowers planted in spring will be replaced by autumn ones.

Terms: general, according to the lunar calendar and in different regions

The planting of bulbs in spring is carried out as early as the climate permits. The best option will plant the onions in special containers and pots for distillation even on frosty days, and when the temperature outside stabilizes, move them to their permanent residence.

So that the first sprouts do not die, the soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm should be at least 9 degrees. It is worth considering the selected variety - there are early and late options.

The climate in different areas also affects the planting time:

  • In the southern regions, in the Kuban, with good weather and "February windows", tulips can be planted in February-March.
  • In the middle lane, in the suburbs, the optimal time for planting is April.
  • In regions with harsh climates, the schedule will move one month ahead.

The main condition is to complete the planting of tulips before the beginning of July, it cannot be carried out in summer.

Favorable dates for planting tulips in 2018 to lunar calendar:

  • February 23, 24;
  • March 21, 22, 23, 25, 26;
  • April 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24;
  • May 19, 20, 21.

What types of planting exist: in pots and in open ground

Potted tulips look stronger than those planted in open ground

Non-sprouted, high-quality onions can be planted in the spring in several ways:

  • In small containers for distillation for subsequent transplantation into open ground. Such tulips will bloom this season, but later than those planted in autumn. It will take time for them to take root.
  • V open land in the flowerbed when the soil reaches the right temperature. Abundant flowering should be expected next spring.
  • Into large pots without further repotting. Decorative mini-flower beds can be displayed on a balcony, patio or veranda. The likelihood that tulips will bloom is high.

It is possible to grow flowers in a greenhouse. But this is more often done in order to implement them.

How to prepare material for planting

Bulbs for spring planting can be purchased at a specialty store and in the market, or harvested in the fall from a flower bed. Planting material should be stored in a cellar or basement. Before that, the onions need to be dried, removed excess soil and folded into wooden boxes single layer. Store such blanks at a temperature of about zero and good ventilation. Then the bulbs will be saved vitality but will not sprout.

Also, clean onions can be stored in the lower compartment of the refrigerator. This will harden future tulips and keep them viable.

To accelerate germination, the material for planting should be prepared:

  1. If the onions were purchased recently, they should be transferred to the lower compartment of the refrigerator at least overnight. Tempering will strengthen the vitality.
  2. In the morning, for half an hour, future plants should be immersed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or use another prophylactic agent against diseases and pests.
  3. Immediately before planting, you need to clean the planting material from tough husks and inspect for rotting and other damage. If this is not done, diseased plants will infect healthy neighbors in the flower bed.

If you strictly follow the planting technology, even in spring you can achieve abundant shoots and friendly flowering.

Correct planting of flowers in the ground

Place a distance of 10-12 cm between the bulbs

Those who decide to plant plants immediately in open ground should first of all decide on ideal place residence of tulips. This is especially important when spring planting: how earlier plant takes root, the better the chance of flowering quickly. The flowerbed is erected in a well-lit, sun-warmed place. But the rays must lie so as to cover the entire surface evenly. Otherwise, the stems will stretch towards the light source, become crooked and thin.

When choosing a site, you need to be guided by the composition of the land - light sandy loam soils or loams should be preferred. Heavy soils inhibit growth and flowering.

Further steps for planting the bulbs are not difficult:

  1. The soil must be prepared for planting. As soon as the snow cover has melted, the ground has thawed, it should be dug to the depth of a shovel bayonet. So it will be easier for the rhizomes to go deeper into the ground, and acclimatization will accelerate.
  2. Submit organic fertilizers... You can choose any type of top dressing. Only fresh manure is not recommended - it can lead to root rot or fungal infections. If the soil is light, you can improve its composition with mineral fertilizers. This will accelerate germination and ensure abundant flowering.
  3. The seed needs to be distributed evenly over the flower bed. There should be a distance of about 10 cm between future tulips.
  4. On the ground, remove furrows or dig holes, water them.
  5. Put the onions in the prepared soil with the tip up and sprinkle with fertile soil.
  6. Level the surface of the flower bed with a rake and water again. Double watering allows the bulbs to compact in the soil, which speeds up their germination.

The planting depth is determined by the size of the onions. Large seed is planted in a hole more than 10 cm deep, and sometimes 5 cm is enough for small onions.

Experienced gardeners estimate the depth by eye - it is equal to three sizes of a bulb.

This point must be taken into account, since excessively deep placement of small onions will slow down their germination, and large ones will come to the surface and dry out.

Pot planting tulips

Potted tulips are an incredibly beautiful sight

Here, you first need to decide whether tulips will be grown for distillation or will remain in decorative pots for the entire flowering period. In the first case, any pots will do; in the second, you need to choose low and wide ones made of ceramics. Plastic options cheaper, but they do not let the air necessary for the development of the root system.

The next stages of planting are similar, even for the forcing method, even for permanent rooting in decorative flowerpots. Required:

  1. Fill the bottom of the container with pebbles or small pebbles by an average of 5 cm. The drainage layer prevents water from stagnating and prevents rhizome decay.
  2. Fill the pot so that there is still 13 cm left to the top with a special substrate. It consists of a mixture of leafy, garden soil and humus in equal proportions with a small percentage of sand and peat material. Tulips prefer slightly alkaline soil. You can buy a potting soil mix for these flowers at a flower shop.
  3. Place the seed on a layer of soil, holding the onion with the pointed end up. The preferred distance between flowers is 10 cm.
  4. Cover the bulbs with soil so that 2–3 cm are left to the edge of the pot.

Then you need to put the pots in a sunny place - on the window or glazed balcony... In the fall, disembarkation is carried out in the same way, but the pots are removed for three months in a room where it is dark and cool.

Proper care of young flowers after planting

Before the first shoots of planting appear, water should be regularly watered. The irrigation regime depends on the amount of natural precipitation and the composition of the soil.

After germination, watering continues. You need to pour water only at the root so that moisture does not get on the leaves and stems. At the same time, plants should be fed with potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers.

When flowering is complete, the withered leaves must be removed. The stems are cut when they turn yellow. In the fall, you need to dig up the bulbs, dry them and send them to winter. But if the climate permits, they can be left simply in the ground, and the flowers will grow beautifully next year.

Correct spring planting of bulbs leads to the fact that they bloom with bright buds already in this season. More clearly, planting tulips in the ground can be studied in the video.
