A design specification (abbreviated as TOR) is a document that describes the requirements for a project. Usually, the TOR is drawn up so that the designer can do the work that would meet the tastes and preferences of the client. The TOR includes a questionnaire for the client, interior analogues and color palettes. The questionnaire is a document that describes in detail the preferences and wishes of the client related to each room designed by the designer, and also lists all pieces of furniture, kitchen equipment, plumbing, etc., which must be present in a particular room. We must not forget about those things that "pass" from the old interior to the new one, they should also be indicated and described in the questionnaire. Interior analogues are photographs of interiors that help the designer understand the stylistic preferences of his client.
Sometimes it is difficult for a client to decide on the style for his future interior. Therefore, the designer must help him by working with interior analogues. If the client names a style with certainty, we advise you to make sure that this style is correctly interpreted. The fact is that our students in their practice often encounter the fact that the customer calls one style, but means a completely different one. For example, one of our former students Irina, having worked with a client, compiled a questionnaire in which the client indicated the Provence style as the main style that the designer should rely on when creating the interior concept. However, after working with interior analogues, it turned out that the client had in mind the classics. If the designer had taken the client's word for it and started creating a conceptual interior solution in the Provence style, the customer would not have approved the concept. The designer would have to redo everything. Therefore, each stage of the TOR is very important in working on a design project. By ignoring any of them, you risk wasting your time and that of your client. This also applies to the next stage of the TK - working with color. It is often difficult for clients to decide on the color scheme for the future interior. In this case, color palettes come to the aid of the designer and the customer.
Exists a large number of Internet resources where you can find similar palettes. We use www.color.romanuke.com for our clients as well as our students. In fact, customers like to choose color scheme future interior through such palettes. However, the designer should remember that if in the questionnaire the client indicated the mandatory use of photo wallpapers or any color images as one of his preferences, then it is their color scheme that should be taken as the basis for the interior color scheme. This rule also applies to paintings and wallpaper with a pattern.
This slide shows an example from our personal practice, where the color scheme of the photo wallpaper was taken as a basis color solution interior. So, we have considered all the stages of work on the terms of reference. By paying due attention to each of them, you are sure to create an interior that will be approved by your client the first time.
This is an example of the TK of our former student Irina Shakhovskaya, the careful work on which allowed her to approve the design project with the client the first time.
This slide shows the conceptual design of the kitchen interior and the final approved visualization. Let's also look at an example of how a designer can complicate their work by not paying enough attention to the development of technical specifications.
On the slide you see an example of a furniture layout made by one of our former students for her client. This is the next stage of work on the design project, which follows the preparation of the TOR.
On the screenshot you see our correspondence with the student. She reports that the customer liked the layout of the furniture, but instead of the table there will be a soft podium. There is an underdeveloped TOR. Since if the questionnaire indicated that the client needed exactly the podium, and not dinner table, then the student would develop options for arranging furniture, taking into account this wish. Thus, an error in the TOR entails errors in further work on the project.
Let me give you another example from our personal practice of working with a client. On the slide you see a fairly well-developed TOR.
And this is the visualization of the interior approved by the customer. The client agreed on it the first time precisely because the terms of reference were worked out quite carefully. So, we considered a very milestone work on the design project - terms of reference for the design. The next stage, to which we proceed after the development of the TOR, is the work on planning solution If you want to learn the profession of an interior designer and start earning money doing design projects, we recommend that you read our FREE book "How to Become an Interior Designer", available at the link:

Link the coverage of the entrance groups with the sidewalk coverage of both the main and courtyard entrances.

When developing the concept, take into account the developed and agreed plans of external engineering networks and communications of project documentation, take into account dedicated lighting loads adjoining territory. When choosing fixtures, take into account the possibilities of energy saving.

The plants used must be selected taking into account the possibility of growth in a given area and in a given climate, to ensure the possibility of plant growth, taking into account planting on the roof of the car park. Use plants in flowerpots for landscaping the main facade.
