A design specification (abbreviated TOR) is a document that describes the requirements for a project. Typically, the TK is drawn up so that the designer can do the work that would meet the tastes and preferences of the client. The TK includes a questionnaire for the client, interior counterparts and color palettes. The questionnaire is a document that describes in detail the preferences and wishes of the client related to each room designed by the designer, as well as lists all the pieces of furniture, kitchen equipment, plumbing fixtures, etc., which should be present in a particular room. We must not forget about those things that "move" from the old interior to the new; they should also be indicated and described in the questionnaire. Interior counterparts are photographs of interiors that help the designer understand the stylistic preferences of their client.
Sometimes it is difficult for a client to decide on the style for his future interior. Therefore, the designer must help him by working with interior counterparts. If the client is confident in specifying a style, we advise you to make sure of the correct interpretation of this style. The fact is that our students in their practice often come across the fact that the customer calls one style, but means a completely different one. For example, one of our former students Irina, after working with a client, drew up a questionnaire in which the client indicated the Provence style as the main style that the designer should rely on when creating the interior concept. However, after working with interior counterparts, it turned out that the client was referring to the classics. If the designer took the client's word for it and began to create a conceptual interior solution in the Provence style, the client would not have approved the concept. The designer would have to redo everything. Therefore, each stage of the technical specification is very important in the work on a design project. Ignoring any of these risks wasting your time and your client's time. This also applies to the next stage of the TK - working with color. Clients often find it difficult to decide on the color scheme for the future interior. In this case, color palettes come to the aid of the designer and the customer.
Exists a large number of Internet resources where you can find similar palettes. In working with our clients, we, like our students, use the site www.color.romanuke.com In fact, Customers like to choose color range future interior through such palettes. However, the designer should remember that if in the questionnaire the client indicated the obligatory use of photowall-paper or any color images as one of his preferences, then it is their color scheme that should be taken as the basis for the color of the interior. This rule also applies to pictures and wallpaper with a pattern.
This slide shows an example from our personal practice, where the color scheme of the photo wallpaper was taken as a basis. color scheme interior. So, we have considered all stages of work on the terms of reference. Paying due attention to each of them, you will definitely create an interior that will be approved by your client the first time.
This is an example of the technical specification of our former student Irina Shakhovskaya, the thorough work on which allowed her to approve the design project with the client the first time.
This slide shows the conceptual design of the kitchen interior and the final approved visualization. Let's also look at an example of how a designer can complicate his work by not paying enough attention to working out the technical specification.
On the slide you can see an example of a furniture arrangement made by one of our former students for a client. This is the next stage of work on the design project, which follows the drawing up of the technical specification.
In the screenshot you can see our correspondence with the student. She informs that the customer liked the furniture arrangement scheme, but instead of a table there will be a soft podium. There is an insufficiently worked out TK. As if the questionnaire indicated that the client needs a podium, and not dinner table, then the student would develop options for the arrangement of furniture, taking into account this desire. Thus, an error in the TK entails errors in further work on the project.
Let me give you another example from our personal practice of working with a client. On the slide, you see a fairly well-developed TOR.
And this is the interior visualization approved by the customer. The client agreed on it the first time precisely because the technical specification was worked out quite thoroughly. So, we considered very important stage work on a design project - terms of reference for design. The next stage, which we proceed to after the development of the TK, is to work on the planning solution of the interior. If you want to master the profession of an interior designer and start making money by completing design projects, we recommend that you read our FREE book "How to become an interior designer", available link:
