How to install a sink in the kitchen: installation rules for flush-mounted and free-standing models. Installing a sink in a countertop with your own hands How to attach a round sink to a countertop

Epochs are changing, and with them, and everyday life. Modern kitchen equipment is significantly different from the stereotypes that have developed over the years, only some accessories remain unchanged. Not a single kitchen room can do without a refrigerator, sink and stove, neither now nor several decades ago. One of the key parts of the "working triangle" is the sink. And if earlier it was, as a rule, an enamel overhead construction of white color, now the varieties have increased significantly. Modern kitchen sinks are made of various materials, shapes, sizes and design features. The installation of such elements may not always be within the power of the owner. Features of different models, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as advice on how to embed the sink into the countertop - below.

The appearance of a kitchen sink, relevant decades ago

Do-it-yourself sink installation may involve different technologies. Let's consider the main constructive types of kitchen sinks.

The overhead kitchen sink can have up to two bowls

Types of kitchen sinks:

  1. Overhead models. This type is considered the most common due to the ease of installation. Even a beginner can handle the installation of an overhead sink. They are usually made of stainless steel and have a mostly rectangular shape. Installed on top of a kitchen cabinet without a countertop.
  2. Mortise sinks. Such accessories are installed in a prepared hole in the countertop, which must be cut clearly to the size of the structure. The sink is immersed in a sealed hole and secured with fasteners.
  3. Under-table products. Their installation method is similar to the previous one: the sink is installed in a hole cut in the countertop. The only difference is that not all worktop materials can provide for an integrated installation type, and the cuts of the hole must be processed carefully.

The undercounter or integrated kitchen sink provides for a complex type of installation and, in general, it can only be carried out in the factory.

One of the important criteria for choosing a shell is its depth. Sink too deep ( 20 cm and more) is not convenient to use, as it makes you bend too much. Shallow bowl ( up to 15 cm) is bad in that the water knocking on it from an open tap will spray around the entire working area.

The choice of mixer height depends to a large extent on the depth of the bowl. For example, for a deep sink, it is better not to choose a tap with a high spout, as well as for a shallow one with a low one. This all affects the usability.

A high faucet above a deep sink is inconvenient because the water pouring out of it will be heavily sprayed around

Of all the types of sinks listed above, today's users for the most part choose the mortise type. These sinks are affordable, have a comfortable depth and last but not least have a modern look.

Why mortise: reasons for choosing

The aesthetic component of a kitchen sink is far from the only criterion for choosing a mortise design. Why are modern consumers so fond of sinks of this type?

The inset sink can have both a standard siphon and an extended opening, which was originally provided for the installation of a disposer

Design advantages:

  1. Can be installed anywhere. By purchasing a mortise-type product, you do not depend on the cabinet installed under it. The bowl can be cut in any place, the main thing is to bring communications.
  2. Lack of moisture. When using an overhead construction, it is impossible to hermetically seal the joints between the modules, the washing unit and the walls. Almost always, water flows into the resulting cracks, which is fraught with the speedy destruction of furniture and dampness on the walls.
  3. The choice of inset sinks is much wider than in the case of overhead sinks. They can have a different form of functionality, the number of bowls, material of manufacture and sets of additional accessories.
  4. Modern appearance combined with affordability. The mortise accessory looks almost like an integrated one, but it costs much less.

The inset sink can be equipped with removable cutting boards, nets for washing products and other accessories.

Types of kitchen sinks by shape

The shape of a kitchen sink depends on the number of bowls, the type and location of installation.

Kitchen units are:

  • square;
  • rectangular;
  • round;
  • triangular;
  • complex shape.

A kitchen sink with a complex shape is made exclusively to order and, as a rule, has an under-table or integrated installation type

Washing structures for the kitchen can have not only different shapes, but also the number of bowls. Standard models are usually equipped with one or two bowls, while atypical samples can have up to four.

Types of sinks by material of manufacture

If earlier kitchen accessories were traditionally made only of iron, cast iron or stainless steel, then the modern choice of materials is much wider.

Artificial stone sink is the second most popular after stainless steel sinks

So, today on the market you can find shells from:

  • natural and artificial stone;
  • ceramics;
  • natural wood;
  • faience;
  • of stainless steel;
  • enameled metal;
  • glass.

Kitchen sink made of earthenware or ceramic

The easiest to install are stainless steel sinks. Glass sinks are capricious in care, and earthenware ones are finicky in operation. Artificial stone sinks require regular cleaning, and granite sinks are not affordable for anyone.

Installation of a flush sink: step by step instructions

The process of installing a kitchen sink is divided into several stages. Consider the installation of a flush sink in a worktop using the example of a stainless steel product and a MDF surface.

Step 1. Preparation.

The key to successful work is the correct preparation of materials, tools and everything you need. When purchasing a sink, do not forget to check its complete set for compliance with the description. Often, during transportation and damage to the packaging, small fasteners can be lost. Check if there are enough clips, there is also a seal, etc.

Do not rush to throw away the included sink template. This is a great help when marking the surface.

From the tool for installing the sink, we need:

  • pencil or marker;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • sandpaper;
  • ruler;
  • drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • Phillips screwdriver or screwdriver cue set.

In addition to the sink and its configuration, you will definitely need a colorless silicone sealant and hardware (there are never many of them).

Step 2. Drawing the markings.

If there is a template in the kit, the markup is done quite simply: we cut out the outer contour and the inner diameter of the sink from cardboard (on which everything is drawn in full accordance with the dimensions), apply it to the tabletop in the right place and outline it with a pencil. To prevent the template from slipping on the glossy countertop, it can be attached in some places with tape, as shown in the figure below.

Marking on the countertop using a cardboard template

In the absence of a template, the markup will be somewhat more difficult. First you need to mark the edges of the sink.

Remember! The sink should not be closer to the edge of the countertop than 10-15 cm.

Next, turn the sink upside down, lay it on the table as it will be installed, align it parallel to the edges of the table and circle the outer contour. For convenience, the sink can be fixed in some places with tape.

When tracing the contour, do not rush and fuss. The correct installation of the device will depend on the performed marking.

We measure the distance from the outer rim to the bowl, remove the sink from the marking and outline the cutting line inside the drawn contour.

Step 3. Hole in the countertop.

Using an electric drill along the cutting line, we make several holes in a row. The width of the slot obtained should be such that the jigsaw can easily enter it. Next, we take the jigsaw and carefully follow the cut line, slowly and without fussing.

Prices for popular models of jigsaws

Jigsaw

To prevent the cut-out part of the tabletop from falling with a crash to the bottom of the module, fix it in several places with self-tapping screws.

Important! Never turn the tabletop over. Cut only from the front side so that no chips form on the enamel.

When the hole is completely cut out, the screws are removed, and the cut is cleaned of dust and sawdust. A "fitting" is performed: the sink is preliminarily placed in a prepared hole, it is checked that it enters normally, does not "walk" and does not cling to anything.

If washing in some place is difficult, trim the cut with a jigsaw

Step 4. Processing the slice.

Any chipboard absorbs moisture well, so the cut point must be carefully sealed with an anti-fungal compound and glued with a sealing tape that comes with the sink. Before processing, all roughness must be processed with fine sandpaper. Proper protection of the cut from getting wet will prevent the worktop material from rotting and its early destruction.

Instead of antifungal compounds for the treatment of the end cut, PVA glue diluted with water in a 2: 1 ratio can be used. After application, the glue should dry.

If chips appear on the front side of the tabletop at the cut on the plastic during the cutting process, treat them with silicone sealant. Only then can the end cut be glued with the included foam sealant. We also glue the side of the sink with sealing tape along the edge.

Step 5. Attaching the sink to the countertop.

We process the sink cut with a silicone sealant, attach clips to the sides of the bowl from the inside. We insert the plumbing fixture into a permanent place and press it well on 10-15 seconds... After that, let go, check the level, wipe off the excess substance with a soft cloth and wait for the sealant to completely seize, fixing the sink in the groove.

It is better to fasten the sink with clips after the sealant has set. This method ensures that the sink will not slip and, as a result, will not be attached incorrectly.

Step 6. Connecting communications.

How is the table top made of chipboard

First, we install the faucet, fasten it with a fixing screw. We connect the hoses leading from the tap to the water supply system. Remember to use a rubber seal when fixing the tap to the sink.

On a note. It is better to assemble the mixer even before installing the sink by screwing the water hoses to it. It will also be more convenient for the rhinestone to fix it on the bowl, until it is fixed on the tabletop.

For the strength of all connections when installing the pipeline, use fum tape.

Do not forget to treat all connections with silicone sealant before installing the siphon and tap.

At the end of the work, do not forget to check the mixer and the sewerage system for leaks.

Features of working with artificial stone

As a rule, stone countertops are made to order in accordance with the preferences of the buyer, and the hole for the installation of the sink in them is provided in advance. But there are also exceptional cases when, for example, initially it was planned to install an overhead sink in the kitchen, and the tabletop was supposed to be solid.

The artificial stone countertop is rather difficult to work with. It must be handled with care, as the material is fragile

For such work, it is better to invite a qualified specialist with a professional tool who will make a hole of the required diameter with a correctly processed cut and install the sink in accordance with all requirements.

If you decide to make a hole for installing a sink on your own, saving on workers, instead of a jigsaw, it is better to take a grinder and protect your eyes and respiratory tract from stone dust when cutting. The work algorithm is not much different from installing a sink in a MDV countertop.

Note. To work with artificial stone, you need to install a disc on concrete with laser chips on the grinder.

Features of installing sinks of different shapes and materials

In the example above, we considered the installation of a round or oval-shaped sink. But what about other products?

Corner sinks

When inserting a corner sink, the main nuance is the cut of an even corner. To do this, in order for the jigsaw to pass easily in the tabletop, several holes are made in a row in the corners with an electric drill, then they are combined together.

The presence of technological cuts greatly simplifies the cut of the hole in the countertop for a sink of an atypical shape

Also, when installing a corner sink, it is important that the corner of the sink clearly coincides with the connection line of the outer and inner corners of the cabinet.

Prices for popular models of screwdrivers

Screwdrivers

Square sinks

When installing a square sink, a line is drawn on the countertop parallel to the outer edge. The width of the product recedes from it and another line is drawn. In the same way, measure and mark two perpendicular lines, completely guiding the contour of the sink. Opposite corners are connected with lines; a siphon will be located at the intersection of these lines.

The holes for the jigsaw when installing a square sink are made in the corners of the drawing.

Granite products

The construction of sinks made of natural stone does not provide for technological holes for mounting a drain and a mixer. And if the mixer can be mounted on the wall or on the countertop separately, then the sink simply cannot do without a siphon. It is very difficult to independently make such a cut in a stone product without experience. An electric drill with a diamond tip is used to make such holes.

In the case of a granite sink, it is better to entrust its installation to professionals, since, without experience, such an expensive product is quite easy to ruin

Earthenware products

For the most part, ceramic kitchen sinks are made mainly in a combined variety - part of the sink is overhead, and part is mounted in the countertop, like the mortise model.

Ceramics, like natural stone, has a rather impressive weight, so for such sinks you need a very strong cabinet and a sturdy tabletop.

Ceramic sinks are fastened in a combined way - for a more durable fixation. In addition to the use of a sealant or adhesive, mechanical fixing parts are also used. You can also prepare the internal supporting structure yourself. To secure the washing niche, a structure is assembled from wooden blocks treated with antiseptic compounds.

When making the sink hole yourself, measure the sink several times before starting the cut. It is better to make sure of the correctness of your actions at the initial stage.

When making a hole for a sink, cut it out a little before the markings. It is better to grind a small cutout later than not knowing what to do with a large

Experienced installers advise:

  1. Do not make the sink hole too large. If the structure "walks" in the groove prepared for it, you can not even dream of the strength of the fasteners.
  2. Before using silicone, first check how much the substance will harden by applying it to an open surface.
  3. Do not tighten the fastening screws when installing the stainless steel sink too tight. This approach can damage the product.
  4. If the rubber seals were not included in the kit, do not rush to the store. They can be easily replaced with silicone sealant.
  5. Be very careful when tightening hardware using a screwdriver. By dragging it silently, you can bend the structure. If you are not sure that you can calculate your strength correctly, it is better to use a Phillips screwdriver.

Do not skimp on sealant when installing a flush sink. It is better to wipe off excess from the surface with a cloth than to use a leaking structure.

The most crucial moment when inserting a sink into the countertop is the surface marking, and the most difficult thing is the preparation of the hole. One wrong stroke with a pencil or one oversight with a jigsaw in hand can simply ruin the new tabletop. Do not repeat the mistakes of inexperienced craftsmen, but do everything wisely. Successful installation!

After installing the sink, the article will come in handy:: do it yourself on the sink, replacing the old mixer with a new one

Often the manufacturing company mounts the bowl itself. But it happens that the service is not spelled out in the price list. In this case, the owner has to carry out the installation himself or by the hands of specialists. But this is not a cause for concern. The right set of tools and expert advice will help you successfully complete the assignment.

The topic of today's article is the installation of a sink in a countertop. This work is not particularly difficult, but you need to have certain carpentry and construction skills. The tips outlined in the material will help you figure out how to embed a sink into the countertop with your own hands, and do it competently and quickly enough.

Installing a sink in the countertop yourself - stages of work:

  • Making a hole in the middle of the array.
  • Edging.
  • Installing the bowl, securing it from the back.
  • Sealing the space between the sink and the lid.
  • Supply of communications and connection of the structure to the water supply and sewerage system.

High-quality fastening of the structure is determined by the following factors:

  • Reliability of fasteners.
  • Good fit and sealing.

Important! Moisture is an aggressive medium for the material from which the cover is made, especially for chipboard. A well-executed installation does not allow it to swell or dry out, which makes it possible to significantly extend its service life.

Markup

This is perhaps the most crucial and serious stage if you need to embed the sink into the countertop:

  1. Place the sink in the center of the lid. The distance from the countertop to the edge of the sink should be at least 5 cm. If this gap is less, then the sink must be deepened.
  2. The interval from the corner plinth is 3 cm or more so that there are no problems with cleaning. If the dimensions allow, then it is advisable to leave a little space on both sides for placing sponges and household chemicals.
  3. If the manufacturing company supplies a template for mounting the bowl, then the task becomes much easier. If there is no template, then you need to place the sink upside down on the lid and trace its outline using a washable marker.

Important! If a round sink is to be installed in a worktop, then the hole along the contour will have a round shape.

How to embed a sink into a worktop: a hole for a bowl

You will need a jigsaw to make the hole correctly. This is a suitable option for chipboard or wood structures. A jigsaw cannot cope with more durable materials:

  • Prepare four centimeter holes at the top of the rectangle. In this case, the marking line should not be crossed.
  • Slide a 2mm tooth file onto the jigsaw.

Important! The direction of the tooth must be chosen opposite. In this case, there will be no chips on the front surface of the countertop.

  • Use self-tapping screws to secure the wooden plank across the sawn lines so that the cut-out part of the tabletop does not fall prematurely under its own weight.
  • Delete the cut out part.
  • Coat the edges of the resulting hole with silicone.

Installation work

Now - the immediate answer to the question: how to embed the sink into the countertop. You will need liquid silicone again:

  1. Step back a few millimeters from the edge of the hole, apply a layer of silicone in the form of a tourniquet. At the same time, the height of the silicone layer should slightly exceed the sink rim.
  2. Then apply another silicone "tourniquet", stepping back from the first about a centimeter.
  3. After about 30 minutes, the silicone will dry.
  4. Insert the bowl into the pre-prepared hole so that the silicone “harnesses” take the shape of the sink, and let sit for a few minutes.
  5. Then remove the bowl and check the silicone layer. If it is not broken, then everything was done correctly, and the structure will receive an additional side made of silicone.
  6. Attach fittings to the worktop to install the hose and mixer.
  7. It is more convenient to attach the siphon to an already installed structure.
  • The hardest part is getting the hole right. If it turns out to be prohibitively large, then the shell simply will not be able to hold on. You need to cut a hole, slightly stepping back from the marking inward.

Important! If the bowl does not fit into the resulting hole, then you can expand it to the required dimensions using a rasp.

  • Different types of silicone cure in different ways. If you hurry to expose the sink, then the additional side will not work, since the silicone can burst.

When repairing the kitchen, many of our compatriots, having spent on materials, want to save on installation, so the question of installing a sink in the countertop on your own is quite relevant.

If the issue of installing a toilet bowl with your own hands is relevant for you, this article will also be useful to you. And the installation of heated towel rails is here.

Installation of a sink made of artificial stone

Installation of a sink made of artificial stone in a countertop is in great demand, for the reason that composite sinks are pleasing to the eye, sturdy and practical.

To install a sink on a countertop, you need to go through a number of stages.

  1. The initial stage consists of preparing the instrument. Namely: a template, a pencil, a tape measure, a jigsaw, an electric drill, a transparent silicone and a gun.
  2. Worktop markings. If the kit does not include a template, it can actually be made in 5 minutes. To do this, put a paper sheet on the countertop, then turn the sink over and draw the contours. To obtain a working contour, one centimeter recedes inward from the existing line and outlines again. After that, the template is cut out, and its shapes are transferred to the tabletop with a pencil.
  3. Drilling a hole for a sink and sawing it out with an electric jigsaw.
  4. Next comes the installation of a stone sink in the countertop. By lowering the sink into the countertop, silicone is applied to its edges to avoid swelling of the countertop and water getting under the sink.
  5. The sink can only be used after the silicone has dried. The final stage is the installation of the mixer.

So that the question of how to install a stone sink in the countertop does not torment doubts, it is better to study the instructions attached by the manufacturer before starting work.

Installation of a round sink

Thinking about how to install a sink in the countertop with your own hands, you should refer to the recommendations of specialists.

Installing a round sink in the countertop on your own is a doable task, but it requires accuracy and patience.

Correct installation of the sink in the countertop should be done according to a template, so if it was not included in the kit, you just need to sketch the contour from the sink.

Further, the installation of the mortise sink in the countertop takes place. The template is fixed on the tabletop with tape and the location of the sink is marked on it. The location of the sink needs to be thought out so that it does not turn out to be too high or, on the contrary, low. A hole is drilled according to the marking and along the outline, a recess for the sink is cut out with a jigsaw. The cut must be completely cleaned of sawdust. At this stage, understanding how to properly install a flush sink in a worktop will come in handy. It is tried on into the resulting hole and the edges are treated with silicone sealant. This measure is necessary in order to protect the edges of the countertop from contact with moisture.

The sink must be pressed tightly around the edges so that all existing voids are filled with a viscous composition. Then the fasteners are tightened along the borders and in the middle of the sink, and the sink is connected to the sewer. Then the mixer is put into operation and the tightness of the elements is tested.

This example shows that the installation of a flush sink in a worktop, with strict adherence to the manual, can be carried out without calling a plumber.

Ceramic sink installation

A video of installing a ceramic sink in a countertop will be required for home craftsmen at the stage of installing a kitchen set.

Many housewives like the ceramic sink for washing dishes, because it is easy to clean, durable and known for its practical qualities.

Understanding how to install a kitchen sink in the countertop, the main thing is to understand that the mortise method is based on attaching the device to the table. At the same time, the process of sawing itself leaves behind dust and shavings, you need to be prepared for this.

So, how to install a ceramic sink in your countertop. Armed with the necessary tools and a template, using a drill and a jigsaw, prepare the opening for the sink. The sink must fit flawlessly into the resulting hole.

The installation of a sink in a kitchen countertop can be considered complete after it has been seated with construction sealant and a rubber band has been placed between the table and the sink. The sinks are fastened using the included clips, they can be plastic or metal.

The sealant will spread widely outside the sink and will perfectly keep it from shifting. The viscous-flowing composition protruding to the surface can be safely cut off as soon as it dries. The sink is then ready for use.

Installing the sink in the counter with your own hands

How do I attach a sink to a countertop?

I think what I mean is the procedure for installing a flush sink in a countertop (usually a kitchen).

For work, we need a jigsaw, a screwdriver and a drill (or another drilling tool - a screwdriver successfully combines both functions), a silicone sealant with a gun for it, a simple pencil.

Place the sink on the countertop and draw a pencil outline around it.

Having stepped back 1-1.5 cm from the edge inside the contour, draw another one.

We drill a through hole for a jigsaw file - it should fit to the inner contour without going beyond its edges.

Cut out a through hole. At the last stage, it is necessary to hold the piece to be cut from the bottom in order to prevent it from falling out.

This is fraught with the formation of chips and damage to the table.

We put screw clips on the sink itself (in the fastening lugs).

We glue the sealing strip from the inside. Liberally coat with sealant and set in place.

You can also add sealant to the seam so that it stands out evenly around the entire perimeter.

Tighten the screw fasteners, pulling the sink towards the countertop.

We remove excess sealant. Let it dry.

Kitchen sinks are divided into built-in and overhead sinks.

The surface of the sink panel can be located at the level of the work table or on the plane of the table top. Faucet bowls must be fastened between sections of the kitchen set. A curbstone designed for attaching a surface-mounted sink is a separate element of the kitchen interior. The built-in sinks are mounted in the surface of the work table of the headsets and floor units.

Overhead sinks are the easiest to attach. They represent a cabinet with a sink, which is complemented by a panel for storing kitchen items.

  • The panel is fixed on the pedestal with brackets and slides into the pedestal grooves using a special slide.
  • The sink may come with an adhesive seal, which is inserted into the groove of the panel. This prevents moisture penetration.
  • Rubber seals, as a rule, do not adhere tightly to the joint surfaces, and have a rather short service life. Therefore, it is rational to replace them with a moisture-resistant sealant, which will help fill the gaps and retain its properties when dry.
  • If the underframe does not have internal elements, this allows access for repairing pipelines, as well as for cleaning the siphon and sewer pipes.
  • It is necessary to attach supporting bars under the overhead sink, which will help to significantly strengthen the strength of the structure.
  • Before attaching the sink to the countertop, a mixer is mounted, and water supply hoses and a siphon are installed.
  • The overhead sink is fixed with special fasteners, which has an L-shape and an overhead slot. For reliable fastening, it is enough to install 5 such elements.

    Places for fastening self-tapping screws are pre-marked on the inside of the curbstone. It is better to screw in the self-tapping screws with a screwdriver, since using a screwdriver can damage the tabletop.

  • Sink bowls can be different, so you need to transfer the geometric parameters of the bowl to the surface of the countertop as accurately as possible. Most often, manufacturers of inset sinks attach a special template to the kitchen set, according to which it will not be difficult to draw a special hole shape.
  • Make a cutting line from the sides of the bowl by about 1 centimeter. Mark the points of the contour, insert the jigsaw and cut a hole to fit the bowl.

    Do not forget that masking tape must be glued to the outside of the contour to protect the surface of the tabletop from damage by the jigsaw foot.

  • When installing a conventional inset sink, the cut line does not require additional processing.

    But at the same time, the edge must be perfectly smooth. This will help in the future to ensure complete tightness of the connection and decorative appearance.

  • Clean the cut surface.

    How to embed a sink into a worktop - let's do a great job

    Apply a coat of sealant and install the sink. After the sealant has completely dried, fix the sink with clamps. When planning to install individual elements of the headset in the kitchen, use an underframe with an overhead sink.

Along with the new sink, there should be fasteners in the kit. If there are no fasteners, then you can use small metal corners, I did this at home. There is not a big nuance, before buying corners with self-tapping screws, decide on the thickness of the material from which the tabletop is made, too long self-tapping screws can go right through.

In general, ordinary silicone can easily and tightly hold the sink, if it is applied correctly, correctly, it is over the entire surface.

It is also important to correctly mark and cut the hole for the kitchen sink, it (hole) should not be too wide, the sink should fit into it tightly and securely, plus space for the sides. If you do not want to be engaged in amateur activities, then special fasteners for the sink are sold separately, so tell the store "fastener for the sink", they are sold individually, depending on the configuration of the sink, decide on the quantity, four fasteners are enough for a square one, for a round one is enough and two.

Countertop washbasin installation: countertop washbasin

The countertop sink, carefully chosen by the hostess, is often chosen precisely for the arrangement of the kitchen. The plumbing store offers classic sinks of various shapes.

On the showcase there are models with straight, rounded corners, perfect round or oval shape. They can be of different sizes, and the design of the product consists of one or two or three bowls.

The depth of the sink is within 20 cm, which is enough to conveniently wash dishes, vegetables or fruits. Overhead models differ from the mortise sink in the presence of an additional plane - "wing".

It is used for hot objects, dishes, as a place for drying fruits. You will learn about the advantages of this type of sink and how the correct installation of the sink into the countertop is made from this article.

Installing a countertop washbasin: the advantages of a countertop washbasin

Installing an overhead sink on a countertop is easier than installing a flush-mounted sink: unlike it, an overhead sink is mounted on a special cabinet. As a rule, an overhead sink is installed on the countertop of a kitchen cabinet made of wood, chipboard and other materials.

Some models are equipped with a side made of wood, they increase the rigidity of the product and protect the cabinet from damage.

Overhead kitchen sinks are most often used in everyday life. They are made of high quality stainless steel. During its "life" a stainless steel bowl interacts with tap water (and it rarely has a neutral pH), detergents and various cleaning agents.

The higher the quality of the steel chosen for making it, the longer it will serve you.

Photo 2. The overhead sink is a convenient and practical solution for the kitchen.

The installation of overhead sinks differs from the installation of mortise bowls and from the technology of installing sinks in the bathroom.

It is easier and easier to install it, any man can cope with such a task. The product is superimposed on a kitchen cabinet, wardrobe, table. For installation of additional devices - no need.

There are 3 main advantages of overhead sinks:

  1. Ease of care. Stainless steel is easily and quickly cleaned from dirt and retains a presentable appearance for a long time.

    The metal used for manufacturing does not oxidize when in contact with detergents, it is not afraid of high temperature liquids. The surface of the bowl is easy to clean, it will not fade and retain its original shine.

  2. Ease of installation.

    You can install the product yourself. Even if you have never held a tool in your hands, the instructions on how to install the sink will help you carry out this process quickly and well.

  3. Price. An overhead model costs less than an inset sink of the same size.
  4. Multifunctionality. Overhead sinks are equipped not only with a bowl for washing dishes, but also with an additional surface. The plane is used for drying dishes, vegetables and other items.

Installation of an overhead sink on a countertop: types of overhead sinks

Overhead kitchen sinks differ in the type of manufacture.

There are stamped and there are welded sinks. There is another type of overhead sinks - bathroom sinks, they are a separate bowl that is installed on the cabinet. The shape of the bowl can be different - oval, round, rectangular.

Photo 3.

As a rule, overhead sinks are installed in kitchen cabinets.

The stamped bowls are made of sheet steel. The number of seams is minimal. The appearance is attractive. The cost of this type of product is democratic. The production technology allows us to offer sinks with a depth of no more than 15 cm. This characteristic is attributed to the disadvantages of products of this type.

Welded sinks have several parts in their design.

Each is made separately, then they are welded together, turning into a single system. The seam surface is ground and polished. With this manufacturing method, a deeper product shape is obtained.

Kitchen sink installation. How to embed a sink into a countertop

The range of bowls of different depths and shapes. The depth of the bowl reaches 20-22 cm.

How to install an overhead sink on a curbstone

There are several options for installing an overhead sink.

The easiest is installation on a curbstone or a special table. In this case, the width of the shell surface is slightly larger than the size of the underframe. This is a prerequisite for the sides to hide the side ends of the bedside table well. The complexity of the option is the choice of the desired sink size. It is best to buy furniture and a sink right away. In another case, it is necessary to carefully measure and buy a bowl, the inner size of which ideally matches the hole in the cabinet, and the width of the sides of the sink will cover the end walls of the bedside table.

Have you decided to start editing?

Prepare everything you need for this process: a screwdriver, a set of screwdrivers, fasteners, a mixer, a siphon, a sealant, plumbing tape, gaskets, flexible hoses for water supply.

The first step is to prepare the ends of the curbstone.

They are treated with silicone sealant. Use a spatula for easy application. Silicone protects furniture from moisture and holds the product securely in the “saddle”. Choose a quick dry sealant. You don't have to wait long to start using the sink. Use an alcohol sealant for wood and plastic countertops. After applying the silicone, install the sink, press it around the entire perimeter. For reliable clamping use a clamp.

Then the excess sealant is removed. And after it dries, they begin to connect the bowl to the sewer and install the mixer.

To make it easier for yourself, you can install the mixer in advance, just before installation.

And the siphon will have to be connected later, after the sealant has dried. The choice of a siphon must be approached carefully, especially by the owner of a private house. The correct choice of a siphon and a number of measures will help eliminate unpleasant odors from the sewer.

Before starting the sewer drain, check the tightness of each joint. The mixer is mounted in a specially designated hole.

For secure attachment, use a rubber gasket, its diameter must match the diameter of the base of the kitchen faucet.

How to install an overhead sink in a cabinet using brackets

Surface-mounted models are mounted in a cabinet. Usually the cabinet is called the underframe. They represent a set-type cabinet, in which there is no top cover and back wall. Such a cabinet is quite simple to assemble or make yourself. To simplify the task, they simultaneously acquire a kitchen set and a sink according to the size of the table-cabinet for it.

Self-assembly of the product takes place in compliance with a certain sequence.

Stage 1... Before installing the sink, the craftsmen recommend installing a mixer. Until the product is secured, you can smoothly and securely screw on the tap and ensure the tightness of the water supply.

Stage 2.

Prepare the brackets.

They are included. You can also purchase special mounts separately. First, place the L-shaped mounts on the base of the table. The place of application is outlined with a pencil. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the designated point. Their length should be 16 mm. The screws protrude no more than 5 mm above the pencil mark.

Photo 4.

Placing anchors at the base of the table.

Stage 3. A layer of sealant is applied to the ends of the table or cabinet using a spatula. Silicone acts as an adhesive and will protect the wood surface from water droplets.

Photo 5. Application of sealant.

Stage 4. Place the sink on the attached self-tapping screws. Tighten the screws until the product fits snugly.

Then the fasteners are tightened. The protruding sealant is removed with a knife or cloth.

Stage 5. Sewer connection. This is the final stage. A siphon with a corrugated hose is used for connection. It is attached to a screw through the mesh in the sink drain hole. For the tightness of the connecting elements, gaskets, plumbing tape are used.

If you decide to put an overhead sink in the countertop, then you need to study the instructions on how to properly install the overhead sink of the cut-in type.

In this case, you will have to make a hole of the right size for the sink and secure it with double-sided tape and self-tapping screws. The markings on the table top are made according to a ready-made template.

It is included in the kit. The hole is sawn with a hacksaw or jigsaw. In order for the product to sit well in the prepared hole, you need to grind the ends. Try on the bowl before final fixing. The product should be freely hung in a prepared place.

The next step is also to treat the sections of the countertop with a sealant.

And fasteners are screwed to the inner wall. Fasteners are supplied with an overhead kitchen sink. If not, please purchase them separately. The side fittings for kitchen cabinets are suitable for mounting the sink. After you screwed the fasteners with self-tapping screws, apply a sealant to the edge of the sink, put a sealing tape on top of it.

Double-sided tape is also suitable for sealing joints. It remains to install the sink and screw it on.

As you can see, the installation of an overhead sink is a simple task that does not require special skills and tools.

You can cope with it with due diligence no worse than the masters.

Video: Installing a countertop washbasin on a countertop

Today the market offers a huge range of kitchen sinks of various models and shapes. When purchasing a sink, customers can choose the decorative finish, material, shape, and color of the sink themselves. However, the main criterion from which one should proceed when choosing a sink is its resistance to the effects of an aggressive environment, the ability to maintain its previous appearance, despite mechanical damage, temperature drops and exposure to detergents.

Types of sinks for the kitchen

There are four main types of kitchen sinks.

The classification depends on the type of their installation, taking into account the conditions of subsequent operation.

How to cut a sink hole in a worktop?

Today, the following types of sinks are very popular:

  1. mortise- sinks that cut into the countertop, which gives them an attractive appearance and convenience;
  2. undercounter sinks- are installed in a worktop made of hard wood or stone;
  3. integrated- installed without joints (sinks of this type are also called seamless);
  4. overhead sinks- they are mounted on a pedestal and can replace a tabletop (they are characterized by extremely simple installation).

The most popular type of sink for the kitchen is a flush-mounted sink.

Therefore, in this material we will tell you in detail about how to properly install a flush sink in the kitchen.

Competent position and markup

Before proceeding with the installation of a flush-type sink, the first thing to do is to determine its correct position and mark it.

To do this, turn the sink upside down and place it on the countertop. Then place the sink on the countertop in the way you think it should be installed. At the same time, it is imperative to take into account how comfortable it will be for you to wash the dishes later, as well as a number of other factors that are individual for each individual situation.

The distance from the edge of the sink to the back of the worktop must be at least 4 centimeters.

Large values are possible, however, this distance should in no case be less than 4 centimeters. The reason for this is that the worktop set aside for the installation of the skirting board for the kitchen should not be covered with a sink. When you decide where exactly to install the sink, then draw a contour around this area.

Before proceeding with the following steps to install the inset sink:

  • marking the contour,
  • drilling holes
  • cutting the opening

it is necessary to remove the countertop from the furniture.

Since for self-assembly, you will need to create the most comfortable conditions. The best option is to put the tabletop on two stools set along the edges.

Work path marking

Having outlined the initial contour of the sink, you can start marking the working circuit.

Professional kitchen furniture assemblers generally prefer to apply the markings with a marker (medium fat, approximately 0.5 to 1 millimeter). Do not be afraid to ruin the countertop, because in the future you will still cut off the part of it on which you applied the markings. To create a working contour, it is necessary to set marks 1 or 1.5 centimeters from the initial one to the inside of the tabletop. Then put them together.

Sawing in the table top of the opening

After marking the working path, you can start drilling holes in the worktop.

This is done using a standard wood drill with a diameter of 10 millimeters. The number of holes depends on the geometry of the sink.

For a sink with a square shape, three holes will be enough, and for a round one - at least two. Here it is necessary to make sure that the connection comes together at a comfortable distance for you, since during the last stage of installation you will have to hold the top of the tabletop from below so that the sawn-off piece does not fall with a loud crash into the inside of the cabinet.

There is also another important nuance: it is necessary to choose the optimal place to start sawing, i.e.

the final step in the process of connecting the holes should be as far away from you as possible. Otherwise, you will experience extreme inconvenience and even expose yourself to danger when you put your hand under the countertop: we must not forget that the jigsaw file has rather high speed.

Sealing and installation

After cutting the opening, you need to wipe the dust from its edges and be sure to thoroughly coat it with some kind of waterproofing material (epoxy resin, silicone or sealant).

On the area where the countertop is in contact with the sink, that is, on the end part of the opening, it is necessary to apply a non-greasy layer of transparent silicone (the most optimal option is silicone with an adhesive base), without gaps.

In this case, the material for waterproofing should not have time to harden. In order to prevent hardening, you must first prepare the sink for installation and sealing - click the fastening devices that come with it on the sink. After that, you need to insert it into the opening for installation, fix it with fasteners, and remove the excess part of the sealant using simple paper napkins.

That, in fact, is all!

You have installed an inset sink, and now you just have to enjoy the fruit of your successful work! If you strictly adhere to all the operations specified in this manual, you will be able to qualitatively install a sink of any shape and from any materials in a short period of time.

A corner sink for the kitchen is ideal for a small space. It fits perfectly into a corner kitchen set and saves such missing square centimeters of usable area well.

Selection rules: which material is preferable

The variety of materials from which kitchen corner sinks are made is great.

This could be:

  • stainless steel (cheap, available to everyone);
  • ceramics (kaolin / faience);
  • fake diamond;
  • composite materials (corian / silacryl);
  • granite and marble for expensive interiors.

The enamel shells, fashionable at the end of the 20th century, are a thing of the past, since the enamel is short-lived, quickly tarnishes, cracks and chips if you drop something heavy.

Ceramic models have many advantages - water flowing down their walls does not make noise, the surface is not afraid of the effects of chemicals and high temperatures, moreover, it is easy to clean with conventional means.

Stainless - the cheapest, they are not afraid of acids / high temperatures / shocks.

However, their surface is easily scratched and often looks unkempt, as water droplets dry out and give it an unkempt appearance.

For an average apartment with a simple design, stainless or ceramic sinks are quite suitable. At the same time, stainless steel will perfectly fit into a modern interior.

Shape and dimensions

The corner sink for the kitchen can be of any size and shape.

First of all, you need to build on the size of the room itself, as well as on the furniture that is installed in it. A small sink is appropriate in a small kitchen.

The curbstone for her should also fit in size.

The shape of the corner sink can be any - round, oval, square, rectangular.

Do-it-yourself installation and connection of a flush sink

The optimal solution would be to install a sink of two sections (two sinks), supplemented by a place for folding the washed dishes.

Mount types: how to choose the right one

All kitchen sinks (not only corner ones) are subdivided according to the type of attachment:

  • under table;
  • mortise;
  • waybills.

The undercounters are attached in a special way to the table top from below, the mortise ones are installed in a special hole in the upper part of the pedestal, the overhead comes complete with a "leg".

Installation: tools and work procedure

Installation of a corner sink for the kitchen is quite simple, so any man can handle it.

To work, you will need the following tools:

  • gas wrench;
  • pipes / corrugated hose;
  • rubber seals / plugs;
  • siphon;
  • screws and corners.

You will also need a sink itself, a curbstone for it, preferably with a hole, otherwise you will also need a jigsaw to cut it out.

First, dismantle the old sink, mixer and all fasteners.

Then a new plumbing is mounted, installed on a pedestal or "leg" of the sink.

The curbstone is firmly attached to the walls and floor. Then the mixer is installed, and the system is checked for operability (no leakage).

If the kitchen corner sink is installed correctly, there should be no leakage.

Pros and Cons of Corner Mount Models

When choosing a sink for your kitchen, choose the right faucet.

His gander should not be too high (spray will fly in all directions) or too low (you cannot wash even a small saucepan under it).

The undoubted advantage of corner structures can be considered a good space saving, the ability to choose any shape and type of fastening, additional space for folding the washed dishes (if the model is equipped with a special "wing").

The only drawback in comparison with conventional sinks is the smaller size.

However, for a small kitchen, this can hardly be called a minus. Oversized dishes, which usually happen on holidays, can also be washed in the bathroom.

1 Ergonomics in the kitchen

Food preparation should be clear and fast. This is primarily influenced by the location of kitchen furniture and appliances. In accordance with the principles of ergonomics, kitchen equipment must be arranged depending on the order of work, that is, from left to right: refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, stove, and between them work surfaces with cabinets.

The minimum distance between individual devices should be:

  • 40 cm between the refrigerator and the sink, as well as between the sink and the stove,
  • 40 cm between refrigerator and stove.

For right-handed people, it is most convenient to place the individual workspaces from right to left. With regard to the sink, this means that the sink should be on the right and the drying on the left.

It is best if the sink is mounted near the connection to the water supply and sewerage system.

The drain system at the sink is made of pipes and siphons with a diameter of 40 and 50 mm.

2 Types of sinks

When choosing a kitchen sink, you should pay attention to the following factors:

  • Roominess. It is determined by the number and size of daily washed dishes.
  • Functionality. It is determined by the nature of the work carried out in the kitchen, the number of additional bowls in the sink and wings for drying. If you have to carry out several personal manipulations at the same time in the sink, then these compartments will be very useful.
  • The convenience of use. You should be comfortable standing and working at the sink.
  • Stability and durability. These parameters determine the material from which the sink is made.
  • Combination with the interior of the kitchen. The sink should match the style, design, color scheme and, of course, the size of the entire kitchen.

In terms of installation, there are two main types of sinks:

  • applied to the kitchen cabinet (overhead),
  • built into the kitchen countertop (mortise).

When installing built-in sinks, it is necessary to precisely cut a hole in the countertop for the chosen sink. In the case of shavings, this is not a big problem, but if the worktop is made of stone, conglomerate or composite, then you cannot do without special cutting tools.

MATERIALS USED FOR PRODUCTION OF WASHERS

Overhead sinks are made of stainless steel or enamelled steel. The two most common looks for steel sinks are smooth and flax-textured.

Inset sinks are made of stainless steel, mineral-epoxy composites and solid artificial materials.

Composite sinks often have a striking grain structure reminiscent of polished stone. Sinks made of artificial materials can be completely monochromatic. This group of kitchen accessories is characterized by a striking appearance and high resistance to abrasion, scratches, dents and high temperatures.

FORMS OF WASHES

Steel sinks have the widest range of shapes and varieties. In addition to the usual one-bowl sinks, there are sinks with several bowls (usually 2-4), which can be both shallow and deep, with additional side dryers.

3 Installation of an overhead sink

  1. The surface-mounted sink is intended for installation on standard pedestals of standard width 50, 60, 80 cm. For installation you need: tape measure, screwdriver, 4 self-tapping screws for wood, clamps for surface-mounted sink 4 pcs, sanitary silicone.
  2. Installation is carried out after installing the curbstone in the place chosen in the kitchen.
  3. Determine how far the sink should hang over the front wall of the cabinet. Subtract the second dimension from the first and get the distance where the screws should be screwed in.
  4. We screw the screws into the upper part of the cabinet walls - do not screw them to the end, the heads should protrude slightly so that they can snap into the holes in the base of the sink.
  5. We insert the sink - the heads of the screws should go into the round fragments of the holes.
  6. Push the sink towards the wall so that the screws lock at the end of the base.
  7. Check if the sink is tightly inserted; if it moves, remove it and tighten the screws.
  8. We insert it into the cabinet again.
  9. This installation method ensures a stable installation of the sink. If there is a metal apron on the back of the sink, it should be firmly against the wall.

4 Installation of a flush sink

The inset sinks are designed for installation in kitchen worktops.

The first step is to cut an appropriate hole in the countertop. In worktops made of wood and laminated particle boards, the hole is cut with a jigsaw on wood.

For countertops made of stone, conglomerates or composites, special devices are used when cutting holes, so this service must be ordered when purchasing them. At the same time, it is necessary to indicate the dimensions of the hole and the exact place of installation of the sink. The size of the hole for the sink is obtained by measuring the length and width of the apron on the bottom of the sink.

ATTENTION

The hole should be 0.5 cm wider and longer than the apron.

1. The apron is used for stable installation of the sink. Some sinks come with a sample sink hole, which you just need to outline on the countertop.

2. Cut a hole in the worktop with a jigsaw.

3. Insert the seal under the sink, which is included in the set with the sink.

ATTENTION

Wood and laminated worktops must be protected from moisture after cutting the hole. The edges of the cut-out hole are abundantly covered with sanitary silicone. After it dries, you can start installing the sink.

Steel sinks are fixed in the hole with clamps. The upper part of the mount is attached to the holes drilled in the backsplash of the sink. The lower part rests against the bottom of the table top. Both parts are connected with a screw. Tightening the screw, clamp the mount and fix the sink in the hole.

4. After centering the sink in the hole, screw the first fastener. We do not tighten it to the end, leaving it a little free.

5. In the same way, fasten the opposite mount.

6. Carefully fasten all fasteners one by one.

7. The last stage of installation is to squeeze all the screws one by one so that the sink rests on the tabletop with its entire contour.

8. Install the mounting points of the latches in the hole cut out in the countertop in accordance with the drawing attached to the product by the sink manufacturer.

9. Screw the clamps into the designated places. There can be from 6 to 12 pieces.

10. Along the edges of the sink we glue a self-adhesive sealing tape, which, depending on the manufacturer, is included in the kit or sold separately.

11. We fix the sink by carefully inserting it into the hole in the worktop. First, the table top rests against the edge of the apron on the latches.

12. Squeeze the sink in the places where the latches are installed. The tabs will snap into the grooves on the backsplash. After the fixation is complete, you can proceed with the installation of the mixer and the siphon for draining.

ATTENTION

The precise positioning of the latches and the precisely cut hole ensure the correct fixation of the sink.

Installation of a granite model (video example of installing a black granite sink)

Granite products can be of various shapes and colors. They also differ in size. It is recommended to take into account the dimensions of the kitchen furniture and the sink, so that the overall picture creates a beautiful and harmonious look. The placement of the corner sink is no different from the round model. Granite sinks are installed in three ways, including:

    Overhead

  • Integrated

With the overhead method, the sink is placed on top of the table and secured with special clips. The cut-in method is cutting a hole into which a granite product is placed. In the latter method, the countertop and the sink are one piece.

Thus, the sink can be independently positioned in the countertop in several ways. Some models are difficult to install without professional assistance.
