How to paint a ceiling plinth: selection and preparation of paint, preparation for painting and painting methods. What is the best way to paint a foam ceiling plinth? What Tikkuril paint to paint a polyurethane baseboard

Installing and painting ceiling skirting boards is often the final touch in the entire room renovation. But, however, some prefer to carry out these procedures even before finishing walls so as not to stain the wallpaper with paint. Regardless of what order of work you choose, the question is how to paint ceiling plinth remains just as relevant.

Another disadvantage of unpainted fillets is that they can become darkened by dust or yellowed by exposure to sunlight. In this case, it is almost impossible to clean the product, unlike painted skirting boards, which do not change their color and can be easily washed.

By the way, don't forget about the joints. The plinth cannot be glued in one piece, so the joints individual elements remain quite noticeable. In order to give integrity to the entire ceiling plinth, it is treated with putty and coated with paint.

Do I need to paint wooden ceiling plinths? Undoubtedly yes. Coating such products with paint, varnish or impregnation will protect them from insects and make the fillets themselves more attractive. Well, the last argument in favor is the possibility of giving them the required shade. This allows you to harmoniously “make friends” between the walls and ceiling.

When is the best time to paint the baseboard?

Painting is easiest when the baseboard is still on the ground. In this case, there is no need to work with a stepladder and there is no possibility of accidental staining of already finished walls. If you decide to do this, then first you should cut the fillets to the required sizes, fitting them at the corners. After installing the baseboards themselves, you will have to start sealing and painting the joints, and this stage of work can cause paint to get on the walls. Therefore, you need to decide whether such an installation is necessary.

Experts recommend painting the baseboards after installation. Naturally, this approach is much more complicated, but the finishing itself will be more seamless and neat. If the ceiling and baseboards are the same color, then they can be painted at the same time, before wallpapering or any other finishing of the walls.

If the ceiling plinth needs to be primed before painting, then this procedure can be carried out before its installation and adjustment.

How to paint ceiling plinth

Preparing for coloring

Before the beginning painting works need to get rid of everyone possible defects installation These can be not only fillet joints and corners, but also dents and scratches on the surface of the baseboard. To eliminate such deficiencies, you can use fine-grained finishing putty or silicone sealant white (more details: " "). To work with wooden baseboards, it is better to use a special wood putty.

Preparation for painting ceiling skirting boards consists of the following steps:

  • It is necessary to prepare any of the materials mentioned above, a soft cloth with water or a sponge, as well as a rubber spatula. Instead of a spatula, a flexible plastic plate can be used.
  • The putty is applied to a spatula, which is used to cover the joint. You need to move along the seam, from top to bottom. The spatula must be pressed firmly against the baseboard, but do not overdo it. Here it is necessary to repeat as much as possible all the bends of the profile.
  • Excess putty is removed with a sponge.
  • It is convenient to seal joints in the corners with putty applied to the tip of your finger. In this case, you should work with gloves.
  • It is also necessary to seal all the cracks between the baseboard and the ceiling or wall.
  • After the putty has completely dried, you can begin to smooth out the uneven surfaces with fine sandpaper.

Before the procedure of painting the baseboard on the floor, its surface is covered with paper or film. If the walls have already been subjected finishing, then they need to be protected. To do this, stick along the baseboard masking tape. You shouldn't hope that water-based paint can be easily wiped off, since this is not so easy to do on wallpaper (especially with a relief texture).

Polyurethane skirting boards today are considered by most experts as one of the most suitable materials for decoration of ceilings and walls. A wide range of polymer fillets, their good performance, as well as a number of other advantages explain the demand for such products in this market niche.

In our article we will look at what these advantages are, and then we will describe the installation of polyurethane skirting boards, paying attention to key features technologies.

Product overview

Main varieties

Skirting boards made of polyurethane foam are elongated panels that are made from polymer raw materials. As a rule, such parts are installed at the joints of surfaces, therefore their design provides for the presence of two perpendicular planes used for fixation on the base.

The front part of the plinth can be very different.

Depending on its configuration, the following varieties are distinguished:

  • smooth - the simplest, used simply to mask the corner. Smooth skirting boards are characterized by a minimal price, but their decorative potential is low;

Note!
On the other hand, the smoother the front part is, the less prone it is to dust accumulation, and the easier it will be to care for the baseboard.

Depending on the purpose of the products, an alternative classification can be given:

Product Application Peculiarities
Ceiling decorative Skirting boards (otherwise called fillets) are mounted at the junction of the wall and ceiling and experience virtually no operational loads.

They are made from lightweight polyurethane foam with low density, so they can be mounted even on weak foundations.

Flexible models that allow the design of curved surfaces without joints deserve special mention. For the production of such products, polyurethane with increased elasticity is used.

Ceiling for lighting They differ from the previous ones primarily in their configuration: such products have either holes for installing built-in lamps or gutters for laying LED strips.

As a rule, the fillet is attached only at the bottom, so the parts are usually equipped with a massive base.

Wall mounted They are used as decorative edging, and are also sometimes used instead of platbands.

They have a fairly simple configuration, since they have only one mounting plane.

Floor Polyurethane skirting boards, made from raw materials with increased density (and therefore strength), can also be installed in the lower part of the room.

In this case, the part is attached to the wall close to the floor covering.

Borders for table tops Sometimes plinths are also installed on countertops to mask the gap between its edge and the adjacent wall. For this purpose, small corner moldings made of dense polyurethane, resistant to external influences, are usually used.

Do I need to paint the ceiling plinth? Almost always necessary. Some of them are produced specifically for painting, but some, for example, ordinary polystyrene fillet, are not. However, it will look much more impressive when painted. This is due to the fact that after painting this characteristic “foam” appearance of the molding disappears.

Painting either special skirting boards or polystyrene ones is not at all difficult, and if all the nuances are followed, a question like “is it possible to paint a ceiling plinth” disappears by itself.

For each type of profile, you need to select a specific type of composition. The choice of paint for skirting boards depends both on their purpose - floor or ceiling, and on the material from which they are made.

What composition should I choose for coloring?

For painting wooden floor moldings, as well as MDF baseboards for painting, any alkyd enamels, impregnations and varnishes, and oil paints are suitable. Under the varnish, you can additionally treat the moldings with tinting or antiseptic impregnation. The decision about what color to tint the baguettes is made depending on the interior design or the tone doorways. What paint to paint a wooden ceiling plinth? The answer is simple: the same materials are suitable as for the floor.

And now about how to paint polyurethane baseboards. This material dissolves when white spirit and other solvents similar in composition come into contact with it. Therefore, the base of the composition should be water-dispersion or acrylic. Painting of ceiling plinths made of foam plastic and duropolymer is carried out with the same compositions.

Preparing for work

The first thing you need to do before painting a foam baseboard, or any other one, is to protect the surfaces adjacent to it from getting the coloring compound. The floor is covered with cellophane or newspapers, which are then attached flush to the baseboard with masking tape. Only adhesive tape is applied to the walls. If wallpaper has already been hung, then prepare a strip of plastic or a wide spatula that can be used to cover the wall where the brush will go. The following photo shows an example of such protection.

How to paint floor plinth without staining the walls: a wide spatula or a strip of plastic will help protect the finish

We do the same with ceiling moldings: where possible - masking tape, in other places - an auxiliary item. We pay special attention to the protection of suspended ceilings. When the tape is pasted, apply pressure along its entire length with a narrow spatula so that the material sticks more tightly to the surface. This way you will protect the ceiling from pigment leakage.

If painting is done before installing the baseboard, then skip the previous step. Next, we inspect the moldings for any defects on their surface. Before you paint wooden baseboard or MDF, we repair any damage found using special wax. Defects on baguettes made from other materials can be eliminated with a putty mixture. It is better to prime polyurethane baguettes before painting, as they have quite porous surface. The pigment will lie smoother after priming.

Preparing the floor plinth for painting

How to paint ceiling plinth. Video contains detailed instructions on the topic of how to properly prepare for painting skirting boards that are installed under a suspended ceiling.

Let's get started

If your moldings are wide and straight, it's a good idea to start painting them with a small roller, like in the next photo. The ends are then finished with a narrow brush. We go over embossed baseboards with a regular brush. By the way, it should be tightly stuffed, with elastic pile that does not diverge too much to the sides: this way the work will be more accurate.

How to paint ceiling and floor plinths: use a roller and brush depending on the situation

If you want to apply a gold or silver patina to the relief of the baguettes, then you need to proceed as follows:

  • Apply the base color to the baseboard using a regular brush.
  • Dip a narrow brush into gold or silver pigment and wipe almost dry.
  • Using light movements, barely touching, we paint the protruding relief.

Instead of an ordinary brush, you can use a special one with a foam tip to apply patina.

How to paint a ceiling plinth with patina

Note: When applied to the baseboard, the composition must be “stretched” over the surface as best as possible. This will help avoid brush marks. Another way is to dilute the composition a little. The composition will apply much more evenly, but it will not cover as well, so we apply diluted paint in 2-3 layers.

When renovating premises today, such a functional decorative element as a ceiling plinth is often used. It is made from polystyrene foam, polyurethane, polystyrene and usually has White color. Such monotony color range and led to the idea of something that could be painted, making its appearance more suitable to the interior of a particular room or space. This is often necessary due to bright wallpaper or due to the fact that painting has been done ceiling wallpaper etc. Let's look at the most common reasons why you need to paint skirting board fillets, how to do it and what specific features of this process you need to know.

Purposes of painting ceiling plinths

What motives might the owners of the premises have that encourage them not only to glue, but also to paint the baseboard during renovation? Many such reasons can be given. Let's look at the main ones.

The materials from which fillets are made are quite porous materials, and therefore, when the fillets are not painted, dust accumulates heavily on them.

  1. First of all, painting the baseboard can be motivated by the need to bring it appearance in accordance with overall design room interior. From our point of view, this is main reason, why in certain cases it is necessary not only to glue, but also to paint the baseboard. The color scheme of the wall wallpaper and ceiling may necessitate drawing a bright, contrasting line between these large planes or, conversely, a certain tonal smoothing of the strong contrast between the walls and ceiling. In this case, the plinth itself, as well as its specific tonal and color scheme, can truly create harmonious combination between the planes of the walls and ceiling, which is one of the determining factors in the formation of the interior of a living space.
  2. The second most important reason that the baseboard needs to be not only glued, but also painted, is that it is made from materials that are quite soft and susceptible to damage and deformation. You can strengthen it with paint outer layer of this design element, emphasize its texture and make the molded forms more contrasting.
  3. Polystyrene, polyurethane, foam plastic, from which fillets are made, are quite porous materials, and therefore, when the fillets are not painted, dust accumulates heavily on them, which significantly reduces the presentability of the design element. If you paint it, then, firstly, it will not look so dull, and secondly, it can be periodically wiped from dust and other contaminants.
  4. No matter how carefully you try, there will definitely remain gaps and cracks between its different parts, which are then sealed with materials (for example, putty) that differ from the main one. If you paint on top, then such imperfections are very successfully hidden and the impression of complete solidity of the design element is created.

Thus, although painting the fillets of the ceiling plinth is not mandatory procedure during repairs, there are still many reasons why it can, and sometimes even needs to be carried out.

Which paint to choose?

The paint should only be on water based: acrylic, water-dispersion, latex.

When choosing paint for painting baseboards, you should pay attention to two determining factors:

  1. Firstly, the paint must be exclusively water-based: acrylic, water-dispersion, latex. Paints based on aggressive chemicals will melt polystyrene and polyurethane.
  2. Secondly, the color of the paint should be in harmony with the range of colors that form the basis of the wallpaper that you are going to glue on the walls, and the paint or wallpaper that will be used to decorate the ceiling space.

Convenience modern coloring decorative elements for renovation is that today they sell water-based paints that you can tint yourself, getting exactly the shade of a specific color that seems most appropriate to you in this case.

Required tools and materials

What might be needed when painting a baseboard, besides paint and the fillets themselves?

  1. A brush that should be approximately equal in width to the outer plane of the fillet. You should not choose a brush that is too wide or too narrow.
  2. A rag or sponge for gently wiping areas of unwanted paint.
  3. Protective masking tape used to prevent paint from getting onto the areas adjacent to the fillet.
  4. A stepladder for working at ceiling height if the plinth is painted after installation.

As you can see, here we do not need any complex devices or tools. Painting ceiling fillets carried out by the most in the usual way, using a regular brush and water-based paint.

But there are some features that we will consider further. In order to give the room a finished look, focus attention on the merits of the interior, as well as visually align the geometry of the room and hide finishing defects at the junction of the ceiling and walls, skirting boards are widely used. The range of these decorative elements allows you to realize a wide variety of design solutions

and fantasies. The products themselves also need finishing.

In this article we will look at why painting them is needed and consider what paint to coat the ceiling plinth with. In order to choose a coating, you should understand what materials they can be made from.

Materials for the production of products

Fillets made of any materials can be of completely different textures and sizes.

Expanded polystyrene

Expanded polystyrene product

Practical, reliable and durable, easy to install and painted in the desired color. However, they should be handled with care, as they are easily deformed.

Not so long ago, duropolymer products appeared on the market and are actively promoted under various brands.

Made from duropolymer

However, in essence, this material is high-density extruded polystyrene.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane

They are flexible, and therefore can be easily mounted on surfaces of any shape.

Styrofoam

From foam plastic Polystyrene foam is an affordable, light-weight and easy-to-install material. The installation of elements made of foam plastic can be easily handled by one person. However, due to its fragility, lack of elasticity, and sensitivity to moisture, there are restrictions for use in decoration. curved structures

It is also possible for cracks to appear in foam fillets installed in new houses if the structure shrinks. Without painting, such skirting boards quickly lose their attractiveness, since the rough surface attracts dirt well.

Gypsum

Such decorative elements are installed to give the interior aristocracy and sophistication. They may suit the court in premises in the Baroque or, for example, classicism style.

In normal typical apartment will not look entirely appropriate, but in country cottage with their help you can emphasize the good taste of the owner. Gypsum is fire resistant, environmentally friendly material, quite heavy and fragile. Fillets made from it are more expensive than their synthetic counterparts.

Tree

Wooden crafts

A classic version of fillets, especially popular when installed in rooms decorated with wood or materials imitating it. Durable, beautiful and environmentally friendly material.

It is necessary to treat with fire-retardant compounds and antiseptics, since this material is susceptible to external factors(temperature, humidity).

PVC

These fillets are convenient because, in addition to performing decorative functions, can be used as a profile for mounting wall or ceiling panels. PVC skirting boards can be painted upon request. It is not easy to paint a smooth surface evenly. Aerosol paints are best suited for these purposes.

Whether dumbbells need coloring or not is not an idle question. After all, at first glance, it seems that they are absolutely ready for use. architectural element. Let's figure out why painting is done.

Why do you need painting?

There are several points that determine the need to treat fillets with paint compounds:

  1. On installed decorative elements defects are often present: cracks, chips, and visible joints of parts remain. Painting ceiling plinths allows you to hide these defects. Problem areas putty and then painted.

  1. Thanks to the coating, the fillets acquire a solid, presentable appearance as well as additional strength. If you put two skirting boards next to each other, one of which is painted and the other is not, the difference will immediately become visible. A fillet without paint looks cheap and unattractive.
  2. Unpainted elements attract dust, difficult to remove from a porous surface.
  3. Over time, unpainted skirting boards may lose their attractiveness.: spots and yellowness appear.
  4. Ceiling plinths can be painted in any color required by the design of the room. But even if you want to leave the original white color, the painted product will become more durable, easier to clean and protected from external influences.

Choosing paint for the ceiling plinth

In addition to the material, when selecting a coating, the purpose of the room in which the painted product will be installed plays a role. Thus, paints that are sensitive to sunlight are best used in bathrooms.

For rooms with high humidity you should choose compositions with good water resistance and vapor permeability.

  • For gypsum fillets, acrylic, alkyd, and oil paint are suitable. Before applying them, the products must be primed, since gypsum is a porous material. The primer must be selected in accordance with the coating that will be applied next. After the paint has dried, you can apply varnish.
  • Skirting boards made of polystyrene foam, polyurethane or polystyrene should absolutely not be painted with compounds containing solvents (for example, white spirit). In this case the best option will become water-based paints.
  • For processing wooden parts there is big choice coatings: depending on whether you plan to preserve the wood texture or paint over it. You can use both paints and various decorative coatings, such as stains, after which it is better to apply varnish after drying.

Important! Wooden parts Before painting, it should be impregnated with a protective composition.

  • It is not easy to paint the smooth surface of PVC skirting boards evenly. Aerosol paints are best suited for these purposes.

Let us consider in detail the types of paints for all types of ceiling skirting boards.

Paint for skirting boards made of polystyrene foam, polystyrene foam and polyurethane

Before applying paint, the baseboards should be treated with a primer, which will create good adhesion and allow the composition to apply evenly. Water-based formulations are suitable for these purposes.

Synthetic skirting boards should be painted using water-dispersion paints(GOST 28196-89 “Water-dispersion paints”).

It can be:

  • Polyvinyl acetate paints. Such compositions can also be used to treat ceiling skirting boards in rooms with high humidity.

  • Latex paints. Latex-based paints are not afraid of water, are wear-resistant and look attractive.

  • Acrylic paints. The most popular coating. Its demand is explained by its excellent performance qualities: resistance to temperature changes, mechanical damage and moisture, harmlessness to human health, and durability.

  • Silicone based paints. Having all the advantages of the paints discussed above, silicone coatings are also not susceptible to contamination, so they can be safely used for kitchen baseboards. The only drawback is that such paints are not very cheap.

To achieve a rich color, it is best to apply two coats of paint.

Paint for gypsum baseboards

Most popular for coloring plaster acrylic paint. It should be applied in three layers with preliminary priming.

To tint a plaster product under wax, you need to dissolve it in turpentine, add a little yellow oil paint and paint the fillet with this composition. After the plinth has dried, it is rubbed until shiny.

To obtain a marbled surface, use an alcohol solution of shellac and rosin.

If you want to get a bronze gypsum plinth, you should treat it with heated drying oil. Then apply bronze powder diluted in varnish. Or you can purchase ready-made paint.

Similar paints for working with gypsum products can be bought in craft stores, where the choice of shades will satisfy anyone.

For improvement protective characteristics and the durability of the coating, a finishing varnish should be applied to the gypsum plinth. Most often used for these purposes acrylic compositions, you can also use a polyurethane option or an alcohol-based varnish.

Painting wooden baseboards

Before applying paint to a wooden baseboard, it must be treated with primer. For these purposes, there are a lot of compositions, which should be selected based on the type of paint, since not all paintwork materials are compatible with each other. Primer is necessary for additional protection wood from impacts environment, improving adhesion with paint and more uniform application.

The optimal primer for indoor use is acrylic. It dries quickly, does not smell, and is compatible with many types of paints. Depending on what coating will be applied subsequently, you can choose a colorless or tinted primer.

Paint for wooden baseboards

Wooden skirting boards can be painted with the following types of paints:

  • acrylic (vapor permeable, durable coating, is resistant to moisture and sunlight, odorless);
  • alkyd (their pungent odor negatively affects the possibility of using this composition in the house);
  • oil-based (also not recommended for use due to odor, long drying time and tendency to crack);
  • polyurethane (hygienic, elastic coatings, have excellent resistance to all types of influences, but their price is high);
  • alkyd-urethane (the compositions dry quickly and form durable coating, however bad smell also present);
  • nitro paint (quick-drying, durable, cheap coating, again, with a pungent odor).

The most popular paint for painting wooden baseboards is acrylic resin paint.

Stains

Often, to give the wood the desired shade, a stain is applied to its surface.

There are several types of these tinting compositions:

  • on the water;
  • on alcohol;
  • nitromordants;
  • acrylic based;
  • on wax;
  • oil

In terms of toxicity, the safest stains are water-based, oil-based and wax-based. In terms of drying time, alcohol compositions are unrivaled (the instructions on the packaging will tell you exact specifications content).

With the help of these coatings, any, even the cheapest baseboard, for example, made of pine, can add attractiveness and successfully fit into the interior.

After applying the stain, the wooden baseboard should be varnished. Most often in this case acrylic is used.

PVC skirting board paint

Skirting boards made of polyvinyl chloride are rarely painted, however, if there is such a need, you can use spray paints for plastic (as in the photo).

These coatings are highlighted in special kind, since the technology for applying these tinting compositions differs significantly from conventional coloring.

The use of glazes allows you to give the baseboards an interesting texture. By blending the applied composition with a sponge or brush, you can achieve the effects of aging or patina.

Possible surface options when using these dyes:

  • Under malachite. Veins are made on the green glaze applied to the plinth using a tampon of crumpled leather.

  • Under the tree. To obtain the wood texture, use brown glaze and a hard brush, with which the dye is applied to the baseboard with pressure. The structure of wood fibers can be distinguished more dark color using a thin brush.
  • Gilding. The gilding effect on the convex areas of the fillets is achieved using a brush from which almost all gold paint. Such a dry brush is passed along the baseboard, and the paint remains only on the protruding parts.

Color options for ceiling skirting boards

The color scheme when decorating a room using fillets plays an important role in interior design. Ceiling elements help to zone the space and influence the perception of the size of the room.

The dimensions of the room are of great importance when choosing paint colors for baseboards. The decor that will decorate a spacious room is unlikely to be suitable for a small closet.

Let's consider options for decorating rooms using ceiling fillets.

Skirting boards and ceiling painted white

A white plinth in combination with the same ceiling visually increases the height of the room and makes it brighter. This option is perfect for rooms with low ceilings.

Skirting boards painted to match the color of the walls

Such details do not attract attention, are a logical continuation of the walls, merging with them, and visually lower the ceiling. Skirting boards and walls painted the same dark color look great in a large room. This decor creates additional comfort and intimacy, so it is perfect for the bedroom.

Contrasting skirting boards

In order to add originality to the interior, you can play with contrast. This technique can be performed in rooms with high ceilings. Condition: the color of the baseboards must match the shade of the furniture, floor or door frames.

To familiarize yourself with the process, we suggest watching the video:

When painting fillets there are several points to consider:

  1. Painting can be done in two ways:
  • Before installing fillets. Parts are cut to fit right size, the corners are sawed off. This method is the most convenient; you don’t have to think about protecting the surrounding finish from paint. The most convenient way to apply paint is by spraying from a spray can. With this method, the coating layer will be of the highest quality. The problem is that after installation it will not be possible to hide the junction of the elements and you will still have to putty the cracks and paint.

Important! The baseboard can be primed before it is installed.

  • After installing the skirting boards. In this case, it is possible to repair all decorative defects with putty before painting, after which paint for the ceiling plinths can be applied. The result of such painting is usually perfect surface. Most often they resort to this method of processing. The most convenient and practical option̶ painting the baseboards before gluing the wallpaper, which will allow you not to think about protecting them from paint drops.

Before painting the ceiling plinth, it must be prepared as follows:

Illustration Description

You need to stick the tape around the entire perimeter of the ceiling to prevent paint from getting onto the surface.

If it is necessary to protect the walls, then masking tape is also applied to them along the lower edge of the baseboard.

It is very important to position the tape evenly so that there are no flaws at the junction.

In order for the masking tape to press tightly to the surface, it must be carefully smoothed with a spatula. It allows you to press the material over the entire area and ensures its reliable fixation on the surface.

Along the lower and upper junction of the baseboard, you need to fill all the cracks with acrylic sealant; it is applied carefully using a special gun. Don't worry about excess, you can remove it while the mixture is still fresh.

Next, you need to immediately begin leveling the joint and removing excess acrylic. To do this, take a damp sponge and run it along the joint. Try to push the composition into the voids, if any, and at the same time all excess will be removed. Work is done on both the upper and lower edges.

Important! If you have suspended ceiling, then the top joint does not need to be sealed.

To remove all excess completely and form a clear and even joint, run a spatula along the surface. It will remove any residue that the sponge did not remove.

The surface of the plinth must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust before starting to seal the seams. Also, while cleaning, run your fingers over the surface to check for smoothness. You will even feel those irregularities that are not visible and will be able to repair them.

To seal the seams, we use the remains of the glue that was used during gluing (sold in small buckets). Its main advantage is that it has good adhesion to the surface and does not crumble when sanded, as is often the case with putty.

The composition is simply applied with your fingers - a small amount is taken and distributed over all joints in straight and corner areas. If there are damages on the surface, they will also be filled with your hands.

Excess composition is easily removed. The instructions for carrying out the work look like this: take a spatula, which is positioned across the joint, pressed and drawn along the surface. At the same time, excess is removed and all uneven areas are filled.

After leveling, you need to let the composition dry. The duration depends on what you used for the job.

To perfectly level the surface with your own hands, you will need a small piece sandpaper P150-P180. All previously finished areas are sanded with it until a smooth plane is obtained.

We reviewed coating options for various types fillets. Painting ceiling skirting boards is an important part in decorating a room, giving it attractiveness and style.
