Bathroom renovation portal. Useful Tips

How to make a false ceiling in a toilet. Stretch ceiling

Repairs in living rooms can be carried out at least every year: change the wallpaper, repaint the walls, renew the floor, and so on. Bathroom and toilet transformations are much less frequent. As a rule, a bathroom renovation is undertaken at least once every ten years. After all, the cost of materials in this case is greater, as well as work in this room. Therefore, the choice of materials for finishing the bathroom should be approached responsibly so that you do not have to make repairs again and spend money again. We invite you to find out what is in the toilet and bathroom.

Requirements for the ceiling in the bathroom

A toilet, even if it is not combined with a bathroom, is a place with high humidity. Therefore, not all materials are suitable for wall and ceiling decoration. When choosing a coating, you must be guided by the following criteria:

  1. The moisture resistance of the material must be very high.
  2. The color of the ceiling decoration in the toilet is chosen in light shades in order to visually enlarge an already small room.
  3. The type of material depends on the height of the ceiling. It decreases if special structures are used (for example, with suspended and stretch ceilings).
  4. The material must have a long service life.
  5. Undesirable elements such as mold, smudges, streaks, condensation, etc. should not appear on the ceiling.
  6. There must be a possibility for the installation of built-in elements (for example, hoods, lamps, etc.).
  7. Hidden items must be accessible, if provided.
  8. Reasonable price for the material itself and related products.

Based on the above requirements, there are the most acceptable options for finishing the ceiling in the toilet.

Types of materials for the ceiling in the toilet and bathroom

To date, there are a fairly large number of options for finishing bathrooms. When comparing price and quality, the following types of ceilings can be distinguished, which are popular:

  • tension;
  • rack and pinion;
  • plastic;
  • colored;
  • tiled;
  • plasterboard;
  • finished with vinyl wallpaper.

Each of these options has a different price range, and also has its own pros and cons.

Vinyl wallpaper ceilings

Vinyl wallpaper is a relatively inexpensive material that is suitable for wall and ceiling decoration in a bathroom. Thanks to the technology by which they are produced, such a finish copes with all the requirements inherent in a toilet room.

Pros of vinyl wallpaper:

  • affordable price;
  • outer synthetic film that is not afraid of water and moisture;
  • can be changed often without much effort.

Disadvantages of vinyl wallpaper:

  • a carefully prepared surface is needed so that there is an aesthetic appearance of the room;
  • the presence of joints can provoke the development of a fungus;
  • short-lived, require frequent replacement.

Painted ceiling

The ceiling in the toilet (see photo example above) can only be painted with a special acrylic water-based paint designed for bathrooms. It dries quickly, does not have a bright unpleasant odor, is not afraid of water and moisture, and also protects against mold and mildew. And there is also a rich palette, thanks to which you can bring to life even the most daring design ideas. Another indisputable advantage of the paint is its price. Therefore, painting belongs to the budget repair options.

The disadvantages of a painted ceiling include the need for careful preparation of the surface, which should be perfectly flat. Unless, of course, you want to have a nice washroom.

Plastic ceiling

This type of finish will cost a little more than the previous two, but will last much longer. in the toilet, it is a frame made of metal profiles on which plastic sheets are attached. They are available in various sizes, colors and surface types (glossy or matt).

Advantages of a plastic ceiling:

  • budget price;
  • hides ceiling communications (hoods, wires and pipes);
  • has excellent moisture resistance;
  • does not provoke the appearance of mold and mildew;
  • the panels are easily removed separately;
  • has a long service life.

Disadvantages of a plastic ceiling:

  • underestimates the height of the ceiling due to the peculiarities of the fastening;
  • can only be installed by the master;
  • it is necessary to select recessed luminaires.

Plasterboard ceiling

The ceiling in the toilet and bathroom, made of plasterboard, is usually used in cases where it is much cheaper to sew a surface than to bring it to its proper form. The finished plasterboard structure is putty and painted with water-based acrylic paint.

The disadvantages of this option are that it is necessary to hire qualified people, the height is "eaten up", there is no possibility of quick access to hidden objects (for example, the wiring of built-in lamps). The advantages of plasterboard ceilings are the implementation of various design ideas (for example, two-level structures). Also, such a surface turns out to be perfectly flat, which is impossible in other versions (except for tension).

Stretch ceiling

The stretch ceiling in the toilet helps to visually enlarge a small space thanks to its glossy surface. It also allows you to hide all the flaws. The ceiling is perfectly flat and airy in appearance.

Advantages of a stretch ceiling for a toilet:

  • long period of operation in the absence of emergencies (flood);
  • high moisture resistance;
  • elimination of the situation of the appearance of mold and mildew;
  • you can make the effect of "starry sky", when a lot of small luminous points appear on the ceiling, arranged in a chaotic manner and resembling stars;
  • wide color palette, options with a pattern and without.

Disadvantages of stretch ceilings in the bathroom:

  • high cost of materials;
  • the need to hire highly qualified specialists;
  • inaccessibility of easy access to hidden objects and pipes.

Rack ceilings in bathrooms

A slatted ceiling in a toilet is made of a material such as aluminum or steel. This is a relatively new finish that was previously most commonly used in public spaces. The slatted ceiling has a fairly wide range of colors, which includes about 50 shades (for example, chrome, gold, mirror surface).

The service life of this finishing option is quite long - about 15-20 years. Rack ceilings are absolutely non-flammable and environmentally friendly. Reiki does not absorb moisture and does not rust. It is worth noting the fact that such a ceiling can be given absolutely any shape. And also, as in the case of the tension and drywall option, you can hide all surface imperfections. True, the ceiling height decreases in the same way - by about three centimeters.

To install rack structures, it is necessary to hire specialists who already know how to do this.

Tiled ceiling

Ceiling tiles are one of the simplest and most affordable in the toilet. This material has a rich selection of sizes, textures, color palette and patterns. Its main advantage, in addition to the price, is that it can be glued even to an imperfect ceiling. The tiles are able to cover all the imperfections (except for large drops) of the surface and will help to visually level it.

The installation of the material does not require much effort, it can be done independently. Changing it is also quite easy. Ceiling tiles are resistant to moisture and mold and mildew. They are also paintable if you are tired of the old design and don't want to change the finish. It is worth noting the fact that together with additional accessories (for example, special friezes), you can make a very interesting design of the room.

Remember that the ceiling in the toilet and bathroom should not only serve, be moisture resistant and protect against mildew and mildew. He also plays a significant role in interior design. With its help, you can not only hide flaws, emphasize the advantages of a room, but also make it unusual. Therefore, choose not only a high-quality and affordable option, but also one that will make the bathroom cozy. Also, do not forget that, regardless of the type of finishing material, the ceiling must be primed in order to additionally protect the surface from moisture, mildew and mildew. It will also help increase the duration of the finish and save you from unforeseen costs.

Usually, renovation in a room begins with finishing the ceiling surface. The same applies to the bathroom, where the ceilings are mounted after replacing the sewer pipes and installing plumbing. The variety of finishing materials in the construction market will allow you to find options with which you can make a beautiful and practical ceiling in the toilet.

What should be the ceiling in the toilet

The bathroom differs from the rest of the premises with high humidity and small size. There are pipe risers, a toilet, sometimes the owners install a boiler there. Replacement of any elements should take place with minimal damage to the rest of the finish, therefore, the ceilings of the toilet should meet the following requirements:

  1. be moisture resistant, as they are constantly exposed to moisture due to the accumulating condensation. These requirements are met by plastic panels, PVC film, rack structures;
  2. ensure tightness. If the apartment is flooded by neighbors, there is a high risk that the toilet will be the first to suffer. Consider this factor when choosing a way to design the future ceiling. Tightness is a property of stretch film sheets that can withstand up to 100 liters of water per 1 m²;
  3. not create obstacles to access communications and pipes. Water or sewer pipes may need to be replaced at any time. Install the ceiling so that, if necessary, you can get to the faulty places;
  4. keep the height indoors. Install ceilings that take up a minimum of space. Most toilets, especially in older buildings, are small. Therefore, it is not appropriate to install suspended or multi-level structures in them;
  5. be practical. A toilet is a room that more often than other rooms in an apartment needs regular cleaning. It is good if the surfaces can be washed with the addition of detergents or wiped with a damp sponge.

Photo of a stretch ceiling in a combined bathroom

When deciding on the shade of the ceiling, be guided by the height and spatial dimensions of the room. If the bathroom is spacious, but low, ceilings, which are lighter than the walls, will visually raise the room. Choose pastel shades - white, milky, beige. designers also recommend using glass panels, mirror tiles, glossy stretch canvases.

In a high room, the ceilings, on the contrary, are visually lowered. Use shades of purple, blue, red, gold for decoration, and decorate the walls in lighter colors.

Too bright colors will look pretentious and catchy. Colored ceilings are best installed in spacious rooms or combined bathrooms. The main thing is that the design matches the walls and floor.

Methods for finishing the ceiling surface in the bathroom, options

Tension structures are mounted using harpoon, cam or wedge methods. Choose harpoon technology for attaching the cloths. Then, if it is necessary to replace the pipes, it will be possible to dismantle the coating, and after completion of the work, return it to its original place.

The installation of such ceilings should be entrusted to specialists so as not to spoil the expensive finishing material during self-installation.

The advantage of this finishing method is due to the fact that with the help of gypsum board, multi-level structures of any shape and size are created. To make plasterboard ceilings in the toilet, choose a moisture-resistant material.

Installation of plasterboard construction takes place in several stages:

  • mount guide profiles;
  • suspensions are attached to the ceiling, a ceiling profile is installed;
  • the frame is sheathed with gypsum plasterboard sheets;
  • the seams are sealed with a serpentine mesh, the surface is putty, polished, covered with a primer;
  • at the stage of finishing, the decorative ceiling in the bathroom is painted in the selected color.

The result is a flat and smooth surface. However, this design makes it difficult to access pipes and utilities. Due to the limited space, the use of plasterboard for finishing the ceilings in the toilet is not a viable solution.

Even with a stylish ceiling design, the room will look dull if the lighting is not properly arranged. When choosing devices, take into account the spatial dimensions of the room. For example, for small toilets, bright sources are used, as in dim light, the walls will create a "crushing" feeling.

Lamps can also be anything: spot, wall sconces, and even LED lighting.

With a combined bathroom, place a flat lamp in the middle of the ceiling, and illuminate the perimeter of the room and individual areas (for example, a mirror, a sink) with LEDs.

The bottom lighting also looks interesting, but it performs more decorative than the main function.

Select the design of the devices taking into account the style of the interior. For the high-tech or minimalist direction, strict sconces and simple metal lamps are suitable, pendant chandeliers will complement the classics.

Well-organized lighting of a small toilet will visually increase its area. It is better to use ceiling lights here. They will not take up space from the room and will visually raise the ceilings.

For plasterboard construction, built-in appliances with halogen or LED lamps would be an excellent option. Flat single lamps are chosen for lighting low bathrooms. For a high toilet, suspended types of devices are used.

Thus, there are many options for finishing the ceilings in the toilet. And most of them can be implemented independently without the involvement of professional craftsmen. When choosing a suitable method, focus on the price component, the size of the bathroom, your own preferences, the direction and style of the interior.

Ceiling in the bathroom, a really superb solution video report

Thinking about how to decorate the ceiling in the toilet, then you should know about the most common materials that have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is important to decide on the color scheme and lighting options in order to get an excellent design result.

What kind of ceiling to make in the toilet?

Please note that there is plumbing, plumbing and sewerage risers in the toilet room, if any breakdown occurs, then for repairs it is important to proceed from the principle of minimal damage to the finish. When choosing a ceiling option in the toilet, you need to focus on the following principles:

  1. The material chosen must be good at resisting moisture, not susceptible to condensation and not becoming a breeding ground for mold and germs.
  2. Ceiling trim should not obstruct access to pipes. The chosen option should not obstruct the installation of electrical wires and ventilation.
  3. The ease of cleaning the toilet cloth is of great importance. Ideally, the surface can be cleaned with a damp sponge without complicated manipulations.
  4. When choosing a material, it is important to consider that it must match the chosen design and fit the walls and ceiling.
  5. The design of the curtain should not take up a lot of space and not reduce the height of the room.

Stretch ceiling in the toilet

Gone are the days when stretch ceilings were expensive, so they began to be used in different rooms, including the toilet. It is recommended to buy PVC coatings, as they reliably resist moisture. The matte and glossy ceiling in the toilet perfectly protects against fungus and reflects up to 80% of the light falling on it, which visually expands the space. The disadvantages of a stretch ceiling are that it absorbs odors and vapors and cannot withstand the pressure of water during flooding. In case of deformation, the film will have to be restored.

False ceiling in the toilet

If the area of the toilet allows, then it is recommended to use drywall for finishing and make a multi-level ceiling. It is important to choose a moisture resistant material. The plasterboard ceiling in the toilet does not deform even at 90% humidity, it is environmentally friendly, has an attractive appearance and is easy to install. Such a finish is not suitable if the room has low ceilings, and even in case of flooding, you will have to completely replace the material.

Slatted ceiling in the toilet

If you are looking for an effective and functional finish that is also easy to maintain, then you can use one that is made of aluminum or galvanized steel. Such slats do not rust, are fire hazardous and can be washed without fear of spoiling. Metal panels do not sag or rot. It is easy to hide the electrical wiring under them, which is also an important plus.

Describing which ceiling is best done in the toilet, it is worth noting that this option has a wide range of colors. You can combine matte shades with gold and chrome panels. It is worth noting that the material is affordable and the installation of the panels is simple, so you can handle it yourself. Many consider it a minus the fact that the rack ceiling takes 5-15 cm in height.

Panel ceiling in toilet

Decorating with plastic panels is popular, which help to make the room neat and aesthetically pleasing. The ceiling made of PVC panels in the toilet is not afraid of moisture, tolerates temperature changes well, does not allow the development of mold, and it also turns out to be perfectly flat. The panels have different lengths of 25-30 cm and have locks on the side, which facilitates the installation process. Installation is quick and easy, and the affordable price is also worth noting. The disadvantages include the fact that some panels look "cheap" and the connections between the panels are visible, which is not critical.

Finishing the toilet ceiling with clapboard

Ceiling decoration with wooden clapboard is considered a classic. The popularity of this material is due to its excellent performance, environmental friendliness, ease of installation, functionality and practicality. Describing which is better to choose a ceiling for the toilet, it is worth pointing out that wooden lining is one of the most affordable options for the price. There is no need to worry about high humidity, as thanks to a simple impregnation with special agents, excellent protection can be obtained. Please note that you will have to use an additional frame and properly maintain the ceiling.

Mirrored ceiling in the toilet

If you want not only to increase the space, but also to give originality to the room, then choose mirror panels for finishing the ceiling. They have excellent moisture resistance and with proper installation you can not be afraid of mold. In addition, this option for finishing the ceiling in the toilet space, the mirror panels are easy to install and the design is very attractive. The disadvantages are subjective, so they include the high cost and the need to use special care products.

Toilet - how to paint the ceiling?

When choosing the right paint, keep in mind that it must be moisture resistant and antibacterial. Describing which is better to make a ceiling for a toilet, it is worth pointing out that water-based paints are most popular and the following types are recommended:

  1. Acrylic. Such compositions are the most popular because they have a low price and perfectly envelop the ceiling surface, which is important given the high humidity.
  2. Latex. Paints of this type are distinguished by the fact that after drying, a strong film forms on the surface, therefore the surface is resistant to the negative effects of moisture and dirt. It is worth noting that this option is more expensive than acrylic.
  3. Silicone. These are modern and high quality paints that have a vapor-proof structure. The price for them is quite high.

Wall-papers on the toilet ceiling

One of the simplest and most affordable finishing options is wallpapering. The advantages of such a finish include a wide range of colors and patterns, you do not need to create additional frames and you can do the work yourself. The ceiling in a small toilet is cheap, so you can regularly change the design by re-gluing the wallpaper. As for the disadvantages, such a finish has a low moisture resistance and a tendency to mold and mildew in toilets with poor ventilation. Another drawback is that it is difficult to glue in hard-to-reach places.

Toilet ceiling color

To choose a color finish, you need to consider the area of the room and the ratio of height to length and width. To visually "increase" the height, use stretch ceilings or other finishes in light shades in the bathroom and toilet, as well as blue, pink, green and beige. You can dwell on the classics, that is, it blooms white. For decoration, the use of silver and light metallic shades is allowed. The original alternative is the mirrored ceiling in the toilet.

For rooms in which the length and width are small and the ceilings seem very high, it is not recommended to use light shades, since the toilet will be like in a well. The best solution for such rooms is dark colors: blue, purple, dark gray, and so on. It is not recommended to use the same color for the ceiling and walls, as the room will be uncomfortable.

Ceiling lighting in the toilet

In any room, including the toilet, it is important to think over the lighting, which adds value to the setting. In addition, it should be borne in mind that there is no window in this room. The use of one light bulb in the center of the room is already the last century and there are many original solutions, especially if a suspended ceiling is used in the toilet. It is worth considering the following features:

  1. It is not recommended to install wall lights in confined spaces, as they can steal the required space. It is better to choose ceiling options, for example, several point models or special lighting located around the perimeter.
  2. An excellent solution is a backlit stained glass window on the ceiling, which will not only make the room brighter, but also add originality to the design. A novelty are light panels that can even be installed on the rear wall.
  3. If the area is large, then you can use wall lamps, which in most cases are mounted near mirrors.

The bathroom is clearly not the place where people do what they look at the ceiling. Usually they pay attention to him when entering a room. But be that as it may, it is not worth giving a damn about the repair of the ceiling in the bathroom. It is important to pay attention to all the details. Well, a large selection of finishing materials allows you to decide on the best solution. The texture, color and design should be selected with taste so that the decoration in the bathroom does not resemble the Hermitage. All work on the repair of the ceiling in the bathroom can be done on your own, without spending a lot of time.

Bathrooms differ from the rest of the premises by a small area and high humidity, hence more serious requirements are imposed on their repair and design. Do-it-yourself ceiling repair in the bathroom can be done in various ways using different materials and technologies. You can transform and refine the coating in this room on your own, and the photos and videos that are given in our article will come to the rescue in this matter.

Basic requirements for ceilings in the bathroom

Thinking about repairing the ceiling in the toilet (bathroom), you need to take into account the requirements that he must meet:

  • regular high humidity can be dangerous for it, due to the presence of condensation. Moreover, it is not a secret for anyone that such premises as a bathroom, a bathroom and a kitchen suffer from flooding due to the fault of the neighbors from above. Therefore, it is worthwhile to provide for the implementation of waterproofing of the base floor. Based on all of the above, you will understand that decorating the ceiling in the bathroom with paper-based wallpaper is an irrational and wrong decision. The best option might be a stretch structure or a plastic ceiling;
  • it is good if the decoration of the ceiling will visually increase the insufficient height and small area of the room - for this, materials are used that are sustained in light colors that can visually expand the space;
  • the proposed design solution for the installation of a false ceiling is to minimize the height of the toilet and provide access to the pipes.

DIY bathroom ceiling repair: photo and choice of materials

Today, the construction market is simply overflowing with a variety of finishing materials, but not all of them are suitable for ceilings in bathrooms.

  1. Painting and whitewashing.

If you are looking for an inexpensive and quick way to finish the ceiling in a bathroom, we recommend that you pay attention to such an option - as painting or whitewashing the ceiling.

The advantages of this method are obvious:

  • fast finishing;
  • small financial investments;
  • the ability to choose from a wide range of colors (using interior paints).

But be that as it may, this method has a fundamental drawback: the ceiling in the bathroom for painting or whitewashing must be leveled. Despite the fact that the plastering process when repairing the ceiling in the bathroom with your own hands is less laborious, it still takes a lot of time and effort.

But if this does not stop you, and you have a lot of free time to wait for the plaster to dry completely, you can safely resort to this method.

How to choose the color of the ceiling

The choice of ceiling color depends on two factors - the wall finish and the height of the room. If the room is low, then the ceiling should be lighter than the walls. All pastel colors will be appropriate: light pink, light blue, light green. We also recommend using mirror panels, glass, glossy or silver / chrome / gold to increase the space. The combination of silver and matte shades also allows you to significantly expand the boundaries.

If the room is too high compared to the area, then the ceiling must be visually brought closer. This can be done using dark colors - red, purple, blue, gold, but on condition that the finish is light. In this case, the lighting devices should be on the wall and aimed at objects that are below the ceiling in order to switch attention to them.

Experts advise against doing photo printing or painting on the ceiling in the bathroom. Perhaps in public places such delights will make an impression, but in houses they will only distract.

How to whitewash the ceiling in the bathroom?

Whitewashing has many advantages - aesthetics, pleasant texture and white color, high speed of execution. Lime whitewash effectively resists the formation of mildew, allowing the surface to "breathe". When flooded, it gets wet, but on the other hand, you will see where it flows from, where it flows and open access to the pipes is provided. To re-whitewash the ceiling, you will spend about 15 minutes.

The main stages of whitewashing the ceiling in the bathroom:

  • level the ceiling with putty. The ceiling in the bathroom is the surface of one slab, without joints. Unlike ceilings in other rooms, de temperature drops often reach 4-5 cm, the process of leveling the surface of the slab is reduced to ordinary filling;
  • for filling, you will need a finishing putty, a mixing container, two types of spatula and a drill with a mixing nozzle;
  • the prepared solution dries up quickly, but given that the bathroom is a small room, as a rule, one batch will be enough to putty the entire surface of the ceiling. We collect the putty on the putty knife, and then we carry it along the ceiling with sharp semicircular movements, thereby smearing the solution. To remove excess, we make movements in the perpendicular direction;
  • after the putty has been applied, wait for it to dry (24 hours), and proceed to grout and plaster it, cutting off minor imperfections;
  • preparation of lime whitewash - dip a brush into it and then apply it to the ceiling. Do not leave non-missed places, doing the procedure several more times.

Once the whitewash is dry, it takes on a bright white color. In the future, it does not imply any special care. Dust will no longer accumulate on it. Well, in case of flooding, when red spots appear on the whitewash, you just need to update the coating.

Painting the ceiling in the bathroom

First of all, you need to choose a paint that would be intended for use in a room with high humidity. This category includes oil based paints, silicone based paints, latex based paints, acrylic paints, some water based paints, and water based paints.

A huge selection of colors and shades of paints allows you to determine the best option that matches the color of the walls. To paint the ceiling in a bathroom, its surface requires preliminary leveling, as is the case with whitewashing. When the filler is dry, you can start painting the ceiling with a roller.

It is good if the ceiling is painted in several layers - three or four. Thus, the color will become saturated, and you will protect the ceiling from moisture.

Drops of accumulated condensation will appear on the painted surface in high humidity conditions. But they won't do any harm. It is enough to wipe them off with a rag, or wait until the water is simply dry, if, of course, the ventilation works well.

  1. Dropped ceilings.

The main advantages of suspended ceilings:

  • a suspended ceiling allows you to achieve a perfectly flat surface without preparing a concrete base;
  • installation of a suspended ceiling (it does not matter at all whether it is made of plasterboard sheets or plastic panels) allows you to mount built-in lamps. In this case, you will provide good lighting in the bathroom.

Attention! If you are going to carry out the installation of built-in lamps, then during the repair of the ceiling in the bathroom with your own hands, you need to make a rather large indent from the ceiling. And if the height of the toilet is small, it may be better to give preference to wall or surface lighting.

Due to their properties, slatted ceilings are ideal for bathrooms and toilets. The main disadvantage of these types of ceilings is the complicated installation procedure. Although, if you decide to make a suspended ceiling yourself, then there is plenty of information about this process today (you can also find it on our website).

Pasting the ceiling in the bathroom with tiles or panels

The process of gluing the ceiling with tiles will not negatively affect the height of the room, and the surface itself will turn out to be waterproof. An important nuance - the size of the tiles must be chosen so that it does not disfigure an already small room. It should be small, which will visually expand the boundaries or, on the contrary, large (then the entire area of the toilet can be covered with 4 tiles).

PVC panels or tiles are glued to the ceiling itself without any additional fastening. They are lightweight, inexpensive and easy to install. This finishing method is cheaper than plastic panels and false ceilings. The only drawback is that they often peel off and deform. In addition, poor quality plastic can change color, for example, turn yellow (and unevenly).

How to glue PVC tiles to the ceiling surface:

  • prime the ceiling surface with waterproof glue;
  • then apply glue to the panels or the back of the tile at least 6-9 points;
  • we apply the panel to the ceiling and press it;
  • subsequent tiles are located close to the first, leaving no gaps. Moreover, PVC tiles can be glued to hot water pipes.

For greater aesthetics, it is worth gluing the ceiling plinth along the contour of the ceiling.

Cork panels

Cork panels and slabs are a natural finish that allows you to soundproof a room. These panels can be found in dark colors, so they can be used by owners of toilets with high ceilings. Moreover, the cost of cork panels is quite high. As for gluing, the technique is absolutely identical.

Styrofoam tiles

Foam tiles can be so intricate that they can resemble stucco. Manufacturers offer a small selection of shades (in most cases, such plates are white). But the variety of patterns is impressive. Foam boards adhere quickly, are very light, but have three main drawbacks - dust accumulation, turn yellow over time and can break during installation.

Installation of a plastic ceiling in the bathroom

Plastic ceiling panels are easy to clean, quick to install, have a wide range of colors and are easy to clean. Their installation reduces the height of the room by 3-4 cm. Since this method of finishing is practically a suspended structure, there are two ways how to deal with pipes: the first is to make a separate box for pipes; the second is to cut holes in the panels and mount them over the entire area of the room. Then the installation of the panels will be carried out on the remaining space with cutting of the plastic panels along the length.

Plastic panels are selected based on the color of the walls. You can install chameleon panels or mirror panels, embossed, embossed, glossy, rough, 3D panels - it all depends on your tastes.

PVC ceiling panels are two plates, between which special stiffeners are clamped. The panels themselves are not strong enough to be punctured or otherwise damaged. The strength of such panels is determined by the quality, quantity and strength of the stiffeners. Such panels are seamless, since during their installation no gaps and slots are left, embossed, since a seam is formed between the panels, which resembles a "lining", as well as panels with rustication, the seam after their installation is similar to the seam between the floor panels, neat and small ... You can see such differences in our photos.

Installation of plastic panels on the ceiling:

  • make a crate from longitudinal bars. You can use wooden blocks 30x30 mm, having previously treated them with an antiseptic. The step between the bars is not more than 40-50 cm. We fix the bars to the ceiling with the help of anchors, 70 mm long;
  • if you decide to install lamps in panels, then at this stage you need to lay an electric cable to the intended place of their location;
  • installation of plastic panels should begin with the initial profile "finish" and "start". Further between them we measure the distance, which will be the length of the panel;
  • cut the panel to the required size using a simple hacksaw for metal;
  • we put the panel into the side profile, move it to the starting profile, where we fix it;
  • the panel is attached to the frame using a construction stapler or self-tapping screws by screwing them into a groove;
  • the next panel must be wound into the side profile, moved to the first panel, insert the spike into the groove and click into place. We twist the self-tapping screw into the groove, fixing it to the crate;
  • the procedure is repeated for all subsequent panels. But the latter should go with the cut edge or groove into the finishing side profile.

As for the hole for the lamp, you can cut it with a drill with a crown, insert the lamp, and then install the panel.

The width of the plastic panels is selected taking into account the wall decoration. For example, if there are ceramic tiles on the walls in the bathroom, then their width should be equal to the width of the tiles.

Installation of a false ceiling in a bathroom

The main advantages of suspended ceilings in the toilet are attractiveness and beauty, the ability to hide all the irregularities and shortcomings of the main ceiling, resistance to moisture, long service life, easy installation and dismantling (if necessary). But there is one drawback - access to pipes worsens. It is important to think over such a nuance well and give preference only to those designs that are easy to disassemble / assemble.

Cassette ceiling in the bathroom

In a small toilet, this type of false ceiling will look out of place. Even the diagonal placement of the guides, which will visually expand the room, will not help. But in large and medium-sized bathrooms, arranging such a ceiling would be an excellent solution. It is equally important to calculate the height of the bathroom: with high ceilings, you can make a cassette ceiling, with low ceilings, you cannot.

Cassette ceilings are divided into two types: with a closed and open suspension system. For example, glass and mirrored ceilings are installed on an open system, while aluminum French ceilings are only installed on a closed system. Various panels are available for these systems. For an open system, panels with a stepped or even edge are produced, and for a closed system - panels with curved edges (it is especially convenient to insert them into the profile holes).

For bathrooms with low ceilings, aluminum cassette ceilings with a closed system are well suited. In addition to the fact that they are moisture resistant, they are easy to clean, they can be painted in various colors, and they are relatively cheap. In addition, these ceilings make it easy to reach the pipes or the main ceiling. It is enough to remove 1 or 2 panels, after performing repairs, and insert the panels into place.

  • Make a drawing of the exact dimensions of the cassette ceiling. Thus, you will significantly facilitate the subsequent installation and correctly position the panels.
  • Place the ceiling by applying the zero ceiling to the walls. It should be 150 mm below the main ceiling.
  • Attach the corner profile to the walls at the zero level. You need to drill holes in the walls, insert dowels, then attach a profile and fix it with self-tapping screws. In this case, you need to maintain a minimum step of 40 cm.
  • Above the corner profile, mark where the main guides will be set. Pull a thread or cord between points on opposite walls. Focusing on them, make a note on the ceiling where the suspensions will be.
  • We fix the suspensions to the ceiling using 13 mm anchors.
  • We install the main guides. In this case, the step between them must correspond to the width of the panel. We rest the corner profile on them, then align it along the cord and fix it to the suspensions. We carefully control their location in the horizontal plane.
  • We attach decorative panels to the main guides. We insert into the grooves the edges of the panel on the fastening profiles, snapping them to the end. Then we move the panel to the edge of the structure. The exact same procedure is followed for all panels.
  • If it is necessary to install a smaller panel, we cut it and put it on the corner profile with the cut edge. It has special elements, bending which, you securely fix the panel.
Installing a cassette ceiling with an open system will be slightly different, as in addition to the main guides, you need to install transverse guides and align the angles of 90 degrees between them. Panels are inserted into the resulting cells.

Rack ceiling in the bathroom

Another modern finishing option is the installation of a slatted ceiling. So, you will make the ceiling catchy, effective and at the same time simple and functional. This type of ceiling is made of galvanized steel or aluminum, since it does not rust, is not afraid of mold, moisture and is absolutely fireproof, easy to remove and clean. The backlight can be placed in panels / rails by hiding the wiring.

The choice of color for slatted ceilings is impressive, but wide panels in light matte shades combined with narrower widths of silver, gold and chrome panels will look prettier in the toilet, which act as decorative spacers.

Installing a slatted ceiling

  • We mark the zero level on the walls.
  • We fix the corner wall profile, maintaining a step of 50-60 cm.
  • We mark the places where the mounting combs will be located.
  • Along the line of the future location, suspensions are installed with a step of 60 cm. Moreover, the first should be 20-30 cm from the walls.
  • The first comb must be installed in the suspension, secured with self-tapping screws (20-30 cm from the wall). We cut the comb to length with ordinary metal scissors.
  • We install the subsequent combs, maintaining a step of 60 cm. Be sure to check the horizontal structure of the structure.
  • We measure the distance between the walls, after which we subtract 1 cm for a more convenient installation. We cut the panel to the required size.
  • We install the rack panel on the comb, snapping it between the teeth. As a result, a characteristic click should be heard. There must be no gap between the corner profile and the first panel.
  • Next, we install a narrow rail / panel in a mirror shade.
  • In the same way, we install all the slats in the following sequence: wide - narrow. If you are going to mount the luminaires, then cut a hole in the panel, install the luminaire and the panel itself.

As a rule, the color of the corner profile is chosen in the same way as the color of the rail-panel. During installation, care must be taken to ensure that no gaps remain between the panels. We put narrow edges of the slats behind the corner profile, thereby hiding the cut of the panels.

Plasterboard ceiling in the bathroom

For the installation of the ceiling in the bathroom, it is worth using only moisture-resistant drywall. The advantage of such water is the ability to install a two-level structure, for which you can choose any shape, for example, there can be a circle or an oval in the middle. After installation, drywall sheets are painted and putty in any paint color you like for wet rooms.

The main difference between a plasterboard ceiling and other suspended structures is that you can get a perfectly flat surface, without cracks and joints. However, it has one big drawback - the impossibility of easy dismantling during unscheduled pipe repairs or leaks.

  1. Wooden ceilings.

Most often, this finish is used in saunas, but it can also be used in wooden houses built using Canadian technology. Wood is environmentally friendly and completely moisture permeable, which allows moisture to escape through the wood pores. In such a bathroom, a favorable microclimate will always reign.

  1. Stretch ceiling.

In recent years, many owners have used stretch ceilings as finishing the bathroom ceiling. This ceiling is a PVC sheet that stretches between special fixings on the walls. Why are stretch ceilings an excellent solution for such a room?

The main advantage of a stretch ceiling is a flat surface. The stretch ceiling, installed by professionals, will not lose the structure of the canvas for 10-15 years and does not need to be repaired.

At the same time, stretch ceilings in the bathroom have a high level of moisture resistance: they not only do not collapse under the influence of humid air, but can also take on water from a neighbor living above. This water can be easily removed without damaging the finish itself.

In addition, the glossy ceiling has a mirror effect, which visually increases the height of the room. If it were not for the complexity of installation and low cost, stretch ceilings could be used as a versatile finishing method.

Stretch ceiling installation

Despite all the advantages of such a finish, stretch ceilings are rarely used in bathrooms. In most cases, PVC ceilings are installed with a harpoon system that allows you to remove the canvas. But for re-installation, you will have to call specialists with a thermal cushion, which is quite unprofitable and costly.

There are many options for arranging the ceiling, there is plenty to choose from - for every budget and taste, both for public places and for a residential building.

As you can see, there are many options for finishing the ceiling in the toilet, but the choice of this or that technology largely depends on the consumer - his financial capabilities, taste, preferences and size of the room. The final cost of repairing the ceiling of the bathroom is influenced by who will do it - the owner himself or the professionals. But in any case, it is important that the end result is liked by all household members.

The famous aircraft designer Yakovlev once said that the beauty of a technical object depends on the degree of its compliance with its purpose. That is, the more an airplane, tank, or ship is fit for its mission, the more beautiful it looks. This fully applies to the design of the ceiling in the bathroom.

The appearance of a beautiful bathroom ceiling should convince that it is hygienic, not afraid of splashes, steam and yellow streaks from leaks from above, the remains of dead flies, etc., will not stick to it.

The design of the ceiling in the bathroom should correspond and (see article) to the general style of the room. Technotronic will look wildly in a room whose walls are decorated with sentimental pots with hydrangeas or levkoy. A plafond painted with silicone paints in an abstractionist style is unlikely to match the antique mosaics on the walls of the bathroom.

And further. The bathroom is the only place in the house where a person looks at the ceiling. Elementary, lying in the bathroom. He sleeps in the bedroom, but in other rooms he simply does not reach the ceiling. That is, the design of the ceiling in the bathroom, at least, should not injure the psyche of the owner.

Bathroom ceiling - design, photo

The end does not justify the means, but determines them. The modern building materials industry is able to provide the homeowner with both (see article) materials and technologies for solving both problems: functional aesthetics and genre.

Stylish solutions in the design of bathrooms and design of ceilings for them

Outpatient style

In general, the tiles on the walls and on the floor, which are quite familiar to us, shining with whiteness (see article). A good addition to it will be painting the ceiling (see article) with white glossy water-dispersion paint - acrylic, latex, silicate or silicone.

Acrylic and latex are best used where it is necessary to hide surface defects, silicate - if there is a desire to increase the antiseptic properties of the room. Silicone is good in any case, but experts believe that reinforcement in reinforced concrete blocks rusts faster under it. It sounds silly: no matter how quickly the fittings rust, there will be enough for both your life and your grandchildren's life.

Beautiful white painted bathroom ceiling

This style is attractive in that it demonstrates concern for sanitation and emphasizes the sterility of the room. But his beauty is only in accordance with this purpose.

Antique style

It is characterized by the use of colored tiles that combine yellow, orange, black colors. On the walls - mosaic installations, plumbing - finished in bronze or antique ceramics. Seven out of ten experts we interviewed expressed their opinion that the optimal solution in such a bathroom would be (see article) an aluminum ceiling made of golden-colored slats running along the diagonal of the room. Three insisted on a multi-level (see article) stretch "temple" ceiling with an ivory-colored perimeter and a pattern on the raised part of the ceiling, including the image of a racing chariot, a Doric warrior's shield, or the head of Medusa the Gorgon.

Beautiful slatted ceiling for an antique lover to lie down in the bathroom

And if the assembly of a slatted ceiling, albeit from golden strips, does not conceal any special difficulties, then a team of highly qualified specialists and the purchase of appropriate materials will be required to install a two-level ceiling. The result is an exorbitantly luxurious design for a bathroom ceiling.

Pastoral style

It involves monotonous wall decoration in pink, light green and blue tones, widespread use of scenes of rural life in the style of artists of the 17th-18th centuries, the presence of decorative figurines such as "Shepherd and Shepherdess", pots of flowers, garlands on the walls, and the like.

Beautiful ceiling in a pastoral style in the bathroom

A beautiful ceiling in such a bathroom is suspended plasterboard. Even without any pattern, simply painted in the light tones of the listed colors, as well as in soft yellow, it will harmoniously complement the decoration of the “pastoral bathroom” with its texture, giving it a cozy, “marzipan” look. Which is what the style requires.

Empire style

The combination of massiveness and pretentiousness of interior items with the use of imitations of precious metals and expensive woods in the decoration. Only three of our experts took on a design solution for beautiful bathroom ceilings with this design, and all three pointed to.

Beautiful Empire-style ceiling in the bathroom

This is a type of suspended ceilings, consisting of mineral plates, as well as plates of chipboard, fiberboard, powder-coated metals. They can have a concave or convex shape, embossing on the view surface. By combining various types of such plates, replacing some of them with shades with fluorescent lamps, you can achieve a harmonious combination with both heavy furniture and baths in the form of pools.

Constructivist style

Born in the 20s of the last century, this is a style of "metallic" minimalism and functionality. The ideal ceiling solution is chrome-plated aluminum slats that run along, not across, the bathroom.

Mirror slatted ceiling in the bathroom

Such a design solution will visibly lengthen the room, but it must be remembered that most technical objects - aircraft saloons, ship holds, wagons, railway stations - have an elongated shape. The specularity of the aluminum slatted ceiling will emphasize, in spite of its "low technogenic nature", the high hygienic properties of the cladding, its suitability for a room where cleanliness is an idol.

Provocative style

Regardless of how it will be specifically presented, the main feature of this style is to provoke a person to the idea that the bathroom is also an ideal place for intimate pleasures. So that a woman, who in piquant circumstances most often has to direct her gaze upward, does not have, as in a well-known anecdote, the thought: "And also the ceilings must be whitewashed."

In the bathrooms, the interior of which is designed in a provocative genre, ceilings are offered. For example, the checkerboard alternation of intensely scarlet and anthracite-black or milky-white cells by itself, according to psychologists, is able to tune a person into a frivolous mood.

Beautiful plastic ceiling in the bathroom

If your heart desires that before your eyes at such a crucial moment there were some curls and strokes in the style of the late Dali, then please order: today's factory craftsmen know how to paint this material with pictures no worse than ancient Persian masters - carpets.

Good in such cases are multi-level ceilings that emphasize the volume of forms. But, alas, the roads!

Geometric style

As a rule, it consists in (see article) a checkerboard alternation of white and black squares of walls and floors. It makes sense for this pattern to continue on the ceiling. But the trouble is that the black-and-white checkerboard on the ceiling, generally above the head, begins to resemble a prison window too much.

Therefore, the generally accepted technique in such cases is to simply divide the ceiling into two parts - black and white. Like, below, on the walls - a painful "chess" struggle, and above, on the ceiling - a kind of summing up: everything to the right is white and white, to the left is black and black. Or vice versa. Never mind.

Beautiful black and white ceiling in the bathroom

The main thing is that the geometric pattern on the ceiling should be larger, larger than on the walls. Even if we are not talking about two-color squares, but about all sorts of "birds", corners, ornaments.

Remember: below is vanity, above is the result.

A la sauna

Longing for real bath joys, some townspeople decorate the bathrooms of their apartments "like a sauna" or "like a bathhouse", sheathing their walls with wooden clapboard. But we are far from recommending clapboarding bathroom ceilings! What for? This is the least hygienic and most perishable solution!

Beautiful stretch ceiling "under the lining"

But there are wonderful stretch ceilings with a pattern that imitates wood sheathing. Their purchase and installation will cost even less than buying a real lining and covering the ceiling with it!

Vegetative style

It is now widespread in large cities and should give the bathroom user a feeling of freshness, youth, and natural energy. It is characterized by the use of rich green tones in combination with a large number of mirrors and "shiny" nickel-plated sanitary ware, "under the moss", etc.

Beautiful vegetative ceiling in the bathroom

Hanging is a good addition to such an interior. This is one of those cases when the color of the ceiling can be more pronounced, more intense than the color of the "bottom" of the room. A kind of additional charge of ecology, pouring in right through the crown.

Some caveats

Surely, in addition to those listed, there are other genres in the design of bathrooms. And, we consider it necessary to express a number of warnings. Especially when the homeowner who started the renovation is convinced that the firm's team of installers can only do routine work, and “step left, step right” is worse for her than being shot.

And if, in this situation, the homeowner decides to realize his design dreams with his own hands, he needs to remember the following:

Don't get carried away by the amount on the bathroom ceiling. Each additional wiring in a damp room with a lot of condensation is another chance to get an electric shock.

Beautiful ceiling in the bathroom with lighting

In addition, modern supermodern lamps are tenacious only in the constant burning mode. If they are turned on and off every now and then, as is usually the case in bathrooms and toilets, they burn out faster than ordinary incandescent bulbs.

Therefore, if you really want lighting effects, then use an LED strip. It is economical, does not emit thermal radiation, is sold in rolls, it can be cut and the brightness of its light can be changed, it is ideal for filling niches of multi-level ceilings.

One problem: when overheated, it quickly breaks down. And the bathroom is a room with high enough temperatures. Therefore, when mounting the LED strip, remember the need for ventilation.

Patterned ceiling in the bathroom

Another tip is not to bother with amateur painting, immediately buy stretch ceilings with a picture. Among the thousands of options that are currently being stamped by Chinese and other factories, there is certainly something for your taste.

Ceiling design in the toilet

People do not go to the toilet to admire the ceiling. And the main condition for the beauty of the ceiling in it is compliance with sanitary requirements. It must demonstrate cleanliness, inaccessibility to bacteria and fungi, and easy to wash.

Beautiful ceiling in the toilet

The toilet is usually a very small room. And due to the small area, it seems excessively high. A dark color of the ceiling will help to visually reduce the height of the toilet room.

For example, a dark brown ceiling will work well with antique wall ornaments. Dark blue will suit the "outpatient" style of room decoration. Red, burgundy - will add piquancy in any case.

Read about how modern designers see the interior of toilet rooms here:

If the toilet room is really excessively high, then a false ceiling must be built below the main ceiling (an ordinary wooden floor supported by steel corners or another type of profile), and plastic panels must be attached to it. Or simply putty the gaps between the boards and paint with matte latex paint.

Stretch ceilings in the toilet are not recommended. The area is small, and there is almost as much work for the fitters as in a large room. As a result, sq. a meter of stretch ceiling in the toilet will cost you one and a half times more expensive than sq. meters of stretch ceiling in the living room.
