Step 2: Prepare the site for work

If they do exist, we seal them up with a mixture that can be made from PVA (diluted with water), cement and asbestos. The paint-and-lacquer coating freely passes water vapor, while protecting the roofing material from the effects of atmospheric precipitation. Differs in a high degree of adhesion. If the substrate is professionally prepared, the paint layer may remain for many years. One liter of the dye mixture is enough for 7 square meters of the roof.

3. POLIFARB - AKROFARB is produced by the Polish manufacturer of paints and varnishes "Debiza". The paint is made on the basis of acrylic dispersion. It is used to paint not only the roof, but also the facade, finished with clay-cement slabs or slate. The applied coating dries up in three hours. A liter of paint is enough to paint 5-7 square meters of roof surface.

4. "AKRYLAKMA-SHIFER" is a Ukrainian water-dispersion acrylic paint intended for slate works. Produced by LAKMA in two color options: red-brown and brown. After staining, an even, homogeneous matte film is obtained, drying in just one hour. One liter is enough to paint 6 square meters of slate surface.

5. "UNISAL" is a Slovak water-dispersion paint for slate roofs, which is produced in Russia by the "Kvil" company located in the city of Belgorod. The production process follows the technology of the company "HELIOS" operating in Slovenia.

It is appreciated for its high hiding power, weather and light resistance. They are used for household and industrial painting of slate, as well as other asbestos-cement products. Can be applied by hand or machine. The colors of the paint include such shades as:

6. "POLIFAN" is produced in the city of Kolomna by the company "Polifan-L". Free choice. Sometimes developers do not think about what to paint the slate and paint with what "will turn up at hand." This approach is unpredictable. They use "serebryanka", paint for facades, cars.
Enamels. Special enamels are used. They give a stable film that can maintain high qualities for many years.
Acrylic and acrylate coatings. Acrylic resins are very elastic, create a more plastic (in comparison with enamels) coating, which does not give significant shrinkage, withstands almost any deformation of the base.
Liquid plastics and rubbers. Mixtures based on polymers or bitumen. These are modern paints for tiles, ondulin, slate, and tin. They adhere very well to the surface, are reliable and durable.

Painting new slate

Painting old slate

Old coatings are more problematic for the following reasons:

Design. The rafters and boards of the transverse sheathing are weakened so much that they sag under the weight of the worker. This can lead to longitudinal cracks in the sheet.
Violation of the structure of the material. Over time, the slate becomes rather loose, so walking on the roof surface is unsafe.
Destruction. Before painting the slate, you should carefully examine the entire surface of the roofing sheet, identify and replace damaged sheets, repair cracks, gaps, holes.
Contamination. Mold, moss and other dirt should be removed.

Repair and replacement of elements

Damaged slate sheets should be replaced (it is worth paying attention to the size of the element and the number of waves) or restored. There are several typical types of destruction:

Longitudinal cracks. It is impossible to close the crack due to its small width. Therefore, it is more advisable to glue over it a fabric tape impregnated with waterproof glue or enamel (if it is supposed to be used for painting).
Transverse cracks. The recommendations are the same.
Breaks. Large holes should be sealed with mastic consisting of loose asbestos (3 parts), cement (2 parts) and waterproof PVA glue. Only after the mastic is completely dry, the paint is applied on the slate.
Bundles. If the area of slate delamination and loosening is small, they are sealed with pieces of fabric in the same way as cracks. In case of more serious damage, it is more advisable to replace the sheet.

Cleaning

Even good quality slate paint will deteriorate if applied to a dirty surface. It is enough to brush the new slate with a hair (nylon) brush of medium hardness. The old one needs to be cleaned more thoroughly:

Rough cleaning. Contamination is removed with a metal brush or a power tool with an appropriate attachment (grinder, drill). Work is carried out until the surface is completely cleaned.
Flushing. Rinse the surface with running water, pouring it from a hose. A stiff bristle brush should be used to remove organic residues in the unevenness. Before proceeding to the next stage of work, the sheet must be well dried.

Many builders neglect the preparatory work required before painting the slate. In such cases, the paint "peels off" in six months or a year and the culprit complains about the poor quality of the paint. However, do not forget about the importance of preparation:

Antiseptic treatment. Some living organisms (bacteria, spores) remain on the surface of a well-washed slate and continue their vital activity under a layer of paint, breaking its connection with the asbestos-cement surface. Painting the slate won't make a difference. The paint layer peels off, and the slate becomes brown, whitish or black. To prevent such phenomena, the surface is treated with an antiseptic solution (general purpose or special solutions for slate).

Padding. If the surface is not covered with a primer, the binder (glue) from the paint will soak into the loose surface, weakening the paint layer. Therefore, before work, the surfaces are primed. One of the soils is used:

Painting
