Best Beaches in Sicily - How to Get to the Côte d'Azur. Sandy beaches of Sicily

Sicily is washed by 3 seas: Ionian, Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean. If you wish, you can swim in each of them, since the coastline about 1000 km long allows you to find the perfect beach. For several years in a row, Marina di Ragusa, Santa Maria del Focallo and Pozzallo have been proud owners of the Blue Flag. These beaches are recognized as the cleanest in Europe.

When is the best time to come?

The peak season is in July and August. The resorts are crowded, restaurants are packed with tourists, and hotels are overpricing. Therefore, if you want to relax in complete silence, enjoy the splash of waves and nature, it is better to come to Sicily from the beginning of May to June or from September until last numbers November.

Pebble beaches have a steep slope. The water column does not warm up so quickly, but the stone retains heat longer than sand, so the swimming season on rocky beaches lasts a little longer.

It is also necessary to take into account the geography - the closer the resort is to the African continent, the hotter the water and air.

    Cefalu beach

Cefal is the most picturesque resort in Sicily, an important balneological center, as well as a town famous for its attractions. But they strive here not for the sake of his amazing palace of the Normans, but for the most prosaic things.

Sicily is mysterious, romantic and pristinely beautiful. In a word, it was created for a relaxing holiday in the bosom of nature, away from noisy cities and dull concrete boxes houses. In order to fully enjoy such a vacation "a la nature", Mother Nature worked hard, along with Etna and all kinds of storms, offering tourists today all the possible wealth of beaches and coasts for every taste. For example, on what other island in the world, having walked a couple of kilometers along the edge of the surf, you can find a sandy coast, which will soon be replaced by a pebble beach, smoothly turning into huge boulders and cobblestones, and suddenly again abruptly interrupted by the delicate sand of black volcanic color? Only in Sicily, we assure you!

Let's start with the exotic - with the so-called "black" Sicilian beaches, which the island inherited from the picturesque but dangerous Etna volcano. In fact, sand so unusual for us is nothing more than lava ground into dust by waves, winds and time. You can look with your own eyes at the once raging flame that Etna has been spitting out for hundreds of years on the beaches of Catania and its environs (the entire northern part of the Catania coast up to Acireale).

Sicily is mysterious, romantic and pristinely beautiful. In a word, it was created for a relaxing holiday in the bosom of nature, far from noisy cities and dull concrete boxes of houses.

Families with children tend to go to the white sandy beaches of Sicily and are understandable. The local sand is gentle, silky, the sea is warm here, and the entrance to the water is gentle - just ideal conditions for bathing babies.

The best of the best in this segment are found in San Vito Lo Capo (which is between Trapani and Palervo), as well as Taormina and Tindara. There are quite good sand coasts in the vicinity of Syracuse, for example, the Fontane Bianche region, and next to Trapani.

However, large and small pebbles still prevail in Sicily, but such beaches have a lot of fans. Firstly, the peculiarity of many local pebble coasts is that the pebbles, as a rule, lie only before entering the water, and then the sand is already moving (that is, the clothes with towels are clean, and it is comfortable to enter the sea). And secondly, it is on the pebbles that the water can boast of amazing transparency and azure color. The first variant of the mixed beach, by the way, is found in Scopello (near Palermo).

But look for fantastic shades of blue, with which the sea shimmers on rocky beaches, in Acireale, Onyne (near Syracuse) and in the vicinity of Palermo. Many fans of marine life, crabs, starfish(whose appearance, by the way, speaks of the amazing purity of the water) deliberately rush to, if not the most comfortable beaches with boulders, but certainly the most beautiful.

The only caveat is that no matter what beach in Sicily you choose, special slippers for entering the water will never hurt. They cost a penny, but they will certainly come in handy on pebble beaches, and even on a sandy shore, especially on a sultry noon, when it seems that the ground under your feet is burning from the burning sun of this stunning island.

  • What to see: the city of contrasts of Palermo, the mafia center of Sicily - Corleone, medieval Taormina, the birthplace of Archimedes of Syracuse and the grandiose Cathedral in Montreal. It is also worth going on an excursion to the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento, sailing to the nearby picturesque islands of Sicily and, of course, climbing the volcano

Although the best beaches of Sicily are located in the south and southeast of the island, beach vacations of varying degrees of comfort are possible on almost the entire coast. There are sections of the coast where it is difficult to get to the water, there are many unequipped beaches, but in general there are plenty of opportunities to find the beach of your dreams.

It is better to plan a vacation in Sicily at the beginning or end of the tourist season: the sea is colder at this time, but there are much fewer tourists than in July and August.

In Sicily, there are both paid beaches - mainly in cities, and beaches, for the use of which you do not need to pay; here you will have to pay a small amount only for a sunbed or an umbrella from the sun, if you do not have your own. There are many wild beaches, not equipped with even minimal amenities, but not as crowded as the city ones.

It is logical to start exploring Sicilian beaches from the capital of the island (Palermo). This is where planes and trains arrive from other cities in Italy. In addition, the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the shores of which Palermo stands, are the first to warm up in early summer, which means that the swimming season here can be opened earlier.

  • Advice: traveling to remote beaches, and just about Sicily, is most comfortable on.

Moving along the northern coast of Sicily, called the Tyrrhenian and bypassing Palermo, you can reach Messina, the easternmost point of the island, and the narrow strait of Messina (Stretto di Messina), which separates Sicily from the mainland. You will see some wonderful beaches along the way.

San Vito Lo Capo

The beach in the vicinity of San Vito lo Capo, located west of Palermo, is considered one of the best in Sicily. It is ideal: you would rather expect to see this on an exotic island than in the Old World. The drive from Palermo takes about an hour.

The beach is good for everyone - both in size (its length is more than 3 km), and white soft sand, and azure color of the water, and beautiful views of the bay in which it is located. Its only drawback is the incredible number of tourists even in those months when the sea is still or is already cool.

  • Nice city hotel: Allbergo Auralba.

Mondello

Located west of Palermo, Mondello Beach attracts with its clean white sand. He was brought here on purpose; a hundred years ago the coast was very swampy. The sea here is shallow and perfect for families with children. Nearby there are many beautiful villas and a picturesque park. From the center of Palermo - 13 km.

One of the best hotels in the city is the Splendid Hotel La Torre.

The path to the east lies through the beaches of Campofelice di Roccella. There is not much sand here, the beach is mostly pebbly, and the seabed not far from the coast drops off abruptly. There is nothing to do with children here - it is dangerous. And there is only one well-equipped beach, the rest are wild.

But if the lack of umbrellas and sunbeds does not bother you, feel free to stay. Nearby you can rent a guest house or apart-hotel, for example, Costa Mediterranea or.

Cefalu

Behind the cape, the rather rugged coastline of Cefalu beaches begins. Palermo is 70 km away. This beach is 15 km of the purest sand and clear water... The depth is shallow, so the water warms up well. This is also a good option for families with babies: warm, soft to the legs, there is plenty of room to run around. Accommodation options with a private beach - Blu Bay, Calanica Resort hotels.

Young couples or lovers of a noisy society should drive a little further - 12 km from Cefalu is the town of Finale di Pollina. The beach is not wide here, but the sea views are magnificent. By the end of the season, the town itself becomes the center of unbridled fun, parties and incessant fireworks. A great option to stay: Marco Polo Casa Vacanze.

From Messina to the South

On the east coast of Sicily, washed by Ionian Sea, many nice beaches. The length of the beaches related to Messina is more than 200 km. On the way to one more big city the island, Catania, you will drive through Taormina, where wonderful but not cheap resorts are located.

Aeolian islands

Slightly west of Messina, a few kilometers from the coast of Sicily, are the Aeolian (Isole Eolie), or Aeolian, islands. Few people know this name, but many have probably heard about the volcano Stromboli, located on the island of the same name. The archipelago is incredibly beautiful and is listed world heritage UNESCO.

The most beautiful beaches are on the Lipari island, for example Canneto beach. There are many guest houses where you can stay for a few days. One of them is the Mistral residence.

Taormina

Lou The best beaches around Taormina are Giardini Naxos and Letojanni: perfectly straight coastline stretching for tens of kilometers, sea water the colors of the sky, wide, well-equipped beaches and lively night life. The city beach is small and always crowded. You can get to it with the help of a funicular or an elevator, or you can use the stairs, which is quite tiring.

Good hotels with their own beaches: Atahotel Capotaormina, Park Hotel Silemi and others.

Lido Mazzarò

Another famous Taormina beach, Spiaggia Lido Mazzaro, until recently remained inaccessible to mere mortals. He was chosen by the stars of Hollywood, not very eager to be in the crowd of vacationers. Now anyone can come to the cozy bay. It is better to choose a time for a visit when the flow of tourists decreases - the number of tourists seeking to get to this beach is very large. Stay in comfort at the Belmond Villa Sant'Andrea.

Catania

Of the beaches in Catania, La Playa is worth noting. This is purely tourist place, there are many hotels, spa complexes, all the beaches are well equipped, but you have to pay to use them. Don't expect crystal clear water - this is the city center. Tourists staying at the Zeus Residence, NH Catania Parco degli Aragonesi and others can use the beaches for free.

If you are not burdened with small children and want to get away from the hustle and bustle, follow the example of the locals and opt for Li Cuti Beach. It will surprise you not only with its size and relative emptiness, but also with its view: the coast here is black and dotted with large pebbles and pieces of solidified volcanic lava. Be careful when entering the water - you may slip or injure yourself.

Southeast Sicily

After the bustling Catania, those located south of Syracuse (Siracusa) surprise with relative peace and quiet. Tourists - "beachgoers" have nothing to do here, there are practically no places suitable for swimming, the nearest beach is located 10 km from the city. Ironically, Syracuse is the only place on the island where you can swim even in May.

Fontane Bianche

The resort town of Fontane Bianche is famous for the amazing sand of its beach - it is snow-white in color, such as is usually found on tropical islands. If you have not booked a hotel room (White Bay), you will hardly find a place by the water; the beach is very small and is packed to capacity during the season.

Kalamoske

Of particular note is the beach of Kalamosche (Spiaggia Calamosche). It is located on the territory of the reserve, and it is rather difficult to get to it, especially if you are with children or there are elderly people or people with reduced mobility in your company. The car park is located far from the beach, the road is a regular dirt road, under scorching sun you have to walk more than a kilometer. But here it is crystal clear pure water and you can admire wild birds.

Lido di Noto

Lido di Noto beach is one of the best in the vicinity of Noto, located between Syracuse and southern point Sicily. This is an ideal place for families with children, thanks to the fine sand, clean sea and uncrowdedness. There is no need to pay for the entrance to the beach, you can rent an umbrella and sun lounger. Mediterranean coast

Moving to the Mediterranean coast of Sicily, you find yourself in one of the best beach destinations on the island.

Carratois

Carratois Beach is a secluded and unknown place near the southern tip of the island. But in Italy it is very popular, especially among the upper strata of society. You can get here only by car, and even then you need to know where to go from the parking lot. People come to Carratois not only to admire the sea: the local white clay has medicinal properties.

Ragusa

In the vicinity of Ragusa, you can find beaches for every taste - with sandy dunes, with lush shores, with a comfortable and gentle entrance to the sea or with steep cliffs close to the water. The most popular beaches are located in the Marina di Ragusa area. The beach is free, but well equipped, there are many restaurants, there is a yacht parking, and there is a bus to Ragusa. A great option to stay in Ragusa is the L'Onda Hotel.

Located almost exactly in the middle of the southwestern coast of the island, Agrigento successfully competes with Taormina for the title of the best resort town.

There are many wonderful beaches here; the province is among the twenty most visited by tourists. Two of the most unusual local beaches are those located on either side of Scala dei Turchi, a snow-white cliff that slopes down to the water like a staircase built by giants. In Agrigento, you can stay at Villa Rossana.

Marsala and Trapani

In the western part of the island are the cities of Marsala and Trapani. A story about a vacation in Sicily would be incomplete without a description of the local beaches.

Marsala

The city of Marsala is known primarily for its wine. Tasting it is the main goal of most tourists who come here. As for the beaches, they are there too, but they are not very suitable for swimming and taking sunbathing: Strong winds are common in this part of the island. For this reason, the beaches of Marsala are very popular with windsurfing and kiting enthusiasts. One of best options for living - Villa Profumo Di Mare.

The beaches in Trapani are rocky and not the cleanest in Sicily. But right in front of the city are the Aegadian Islands (Isole Egadi), which can be reached from Trapani, as well as from Marsala, by ferry. They run at intervals of 30-60 minutes, a one-way ticket will cost 15-20 euros. Schedules and tickets: www.directferries.com.

It is worth going to the Aegadian Islands for clean water, beautiful landscapes, tranquility and privacy. The best beaches, with grottoes, bays and amazing beauty of the sea, are on the island of Favignana. It is better to rent a small villa here. Among the best hotels are Hotel Il Portico or I Pretti Resort. It is better to book a few months before the trip - the rooms are snapped up!
