In total, the archipelago includes 7 islands, which are washed by the waters of the Atlantic. The Canaries are an autonomous community of Spain, with two capitals Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas Gran Canaria. There are several versions that suggest why the islands got this name. Immediately, we note that the community is so named not because of the large number of canaries, it was the bird that was so named after its habitat.
In general, translated from Latin, the name means "Dog Islands". But why is it so? Opinions differ. Some argue that the islands are called dogs, because sea lions, which were called dogs here, lived here much earlier. According to another version, the scientist of Ancient Rome spoke about many large dogs, in connection with which the Canary Islands received such a name. The third version refers to the Guanche tribe that once lived here, who revered dogs as a sacred animal.
It was the Guanche tribes who lived in this place before the appearance of European people. The Guanches were engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding, they dressed in animal skins and mummified the leaders. Further here came the Phoenicians, Greeks and the population of Carthage. In the 12th century, Arab sailors arrived here, and a century later the French also visited.
In the 14th century, the French decided to seize the islands, but the Spaniards completely conquered the Canaries at the end of the 15th century. When, after the discovery of America, people realized that the islands are a significant place on the way to a new world, then citizens of different states began to sail here, and pirates simply tried to enrich themselves here.
In the 80s of the last century, the Canaries were recognized as an autonomous region in the country, and 4 years later they joined the European Union on special conditions.

The climate is mild, with warm winter months and hot summers typical. In winter, the temperature ranges from +19 to +23 degrees, in summer the thermometer rises to +24 - 30. Water in winter warms up to a maximum of +20, and in summer - up to +23.
In general, there is a tropical trade wind climate, since the Canary Islands are located next to the African continent, from where the wind blows, bringing heat. It should be noted that the weather on the eastern islands is drier. However, African influence is mitigated by trade winds coming from the northeast. In addition, the weather and climate generally depend on the height of the mountains lying here. This is most evident in La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, which are the highest points of the islands.
Beaches
The forces of nature and human efforts have created excellent conditions here for beach recreation and water sports. Since there were not many beaches on the islands due to their volcanic origin, most of them were created by man. It is interesting that the sand here is different on the beaches: it can be white, volcanic, yellow, and sometimes black. On some beaches there is sand that was taken from the bottom of the ocean, on others the beach is made from the sand of the Dominican Republic, on the third there is sand from the Sahara.
In Tenerife, almost all beaches are created artificially. There are also those created by nature, but they are all protected from strong currents by dams, and in general they are ennobled. The southern part of the island boasts longer beaches that have better infrastructure.
Visit the black sand beach called Playa de Tagana, and next to it there is a white fine sand beach called Las Teresitas. These two beaches form an amazing ensemble. Another very unusual beach is Playa de Martyanes, where there is a mountain lake with water from the sea, and nearby are small islands with picturesque fountains, bars and restaurants.

Tenerife beaches in the west of the island
