How and when is it better to transplant lilies. When to replant lilies? Several important rules for flower growers

Good day!

In autumn the most best time for transplanting lilies. The best time is September-first half of October. It seems like a simple procedure, but it must be done correctly, it depends on it successful flowering next summer.

From correct fit lilies depend on their summer bloom

How to plant lilies correctly and what should you pay attention to when planting in the fall? I have already described the main points in. But recently she herself took up planting and transplanting lilies and decided to photograph and write about it again. It will not hurt to remind you once again.

Transplanting lilies in the fall

The photo shows these roots on the stem above the bulb.

There are species that do not have these roots, but they are very rare. For example, the Candidum lily (snow-white) should be planted smaller and earlier, somewhere in August, as soon as the stem dries up. This lily has already sprouting leaves in early autumn. And it is important that in September she had a good rosette of leaves.

Other lilies only develop in autumn root system, but these will be sub-radicular roots, which are important to preserve during transplantation.

During the winter, the supra-bulbous roots die off, the stem rot and is easily pulled out of the soil in spring, making room for a new sprout. I showed how I plant one onion.

If you are replanting a large bush, then first you need to divide it into separate bulbs, separate the children from the stems and plant. The photo clearly shows that children have formed above the roots.

Transplanting an overgrown lily bush

The planting depth must be sufficient for these roots to form and depends on the size of the bulbs. Large bulbs need to be planted deeper. small - smaller... It is recommended to plant to a depth of 3-5 times the height of the bulb.

I did the transplant in early September, the lily's stem was still green, I didn’t pick it off, let it grow like that.

But if you bought an onion in a store, then, as a rule, old stem already removed, you just have an onion. It's good if she still has roots.

Attention! If there is already a sprout on the bulb during autumn planting, it is extremely risky to plant such a bulb for the winter. I already had this experience, I bought bulbs at a sale and although I planted them deeply, most of disappeared.

Plant these bulbs in large pots and place them in a cold cellar, and in the early spring, plant them in the ground. This way they have a better chance of surviving. Or try using it for distillation.

Treat the planting material very carefully. Take a good look at the onion. If there are rotten places, remove them to healthy tissue, lubricate the cut points with brilliant green or sprinkle with crushed coal.

For the prevention of diseases, keep the bulb in a solution of a fungicide, for example, "Maxim" or "Fundazol" according to the instructions for the preparation. You can additionally hold the bulb in a solution of some kind of root former, now there are different ones on sale.

After that, plant the onion in the prepared place. The roots that are on the bottom - save them, the flower really needs them. As I said, the task of the bulb in the fall is to root well in order to overwinter.

I remind you that you cannot put fresh manure under the bulbous ones. Overripe compost is ok. This applies not only to lilies, but also to tulips, daffodils, gladioli, etc.

We straighten the roots, if the soil is heavy, then sand can be poured under the bottom. We fill up the hole, water it.

At the planting site, I put a peg with the inscription of the variety. I either sign on thick foil with a pen (the letters are pressed through and are visible for a long time), or I scratch the name with a thick needle on the fax paper tubes that remain after using the roll. Can be scribbled on any piece of plastic.

I put a tube or foil on a used felt-tip pen or pen and stick it near the planted onion.

Well, now, when digging, I will not lose it and I will not accidentally dig it up.

Simultaneously with lilies, you can transplant crocuses, daffodils,

Timely transplant of lilies is a pledge of them good growth and beautiful abundant flowering... However, you should know: how often you need to transplant lilies depends largely on them. So, Martagon lilies, as well as American hybrids, need to be transplanted only once every 10 years, but Asian hybrids, like tubular ones, require a change in their location annually. This is due to the fact that their bulbs grow very quickly.

It is also important right choice seasons for transplanting these flowers. Let's find out when it is best to replant lilies - in spring or, conversely, in autumn, and in what month it should be done.

What time of year should lilies be replanted?

Many beginners mistakenly believe that all flowers should only be replanted in the spring, but this is not the case. Turns out, best time in order to transplant lilies to a new place, it is considered the end of August. But for varieties with average flowering periods, this time shifts somewhat, by about a month - this means that a transplant is desirable towards the end of September.

So, in order to transplant a lily, first dig it out with a rhizome - a bulb, lightly shake it off the ground and carefully examine it. A healthy lily bulb should be clean, without visible damage, with a well-developed root system. If everything is in order, the bulb can be immediately transplanted to a new place, having previously wrapped in ordinary moss for protective purposes. Drying the tubers, as is done with other flowers, is not necessary in the case of lilies. However, if the bulb has stains or if its roots are dark, with signs of the presence of fungus, it is necessary to disinfect. The bulb is washed in running water and placed in a solution of potassium permanganate, Fundazol, Benlat or another disinfectant.

If you dug up not one onion, but a whole nest, it should be divided into individual bulbs, which can then be planted in different places. Small onions, as well as children, should be planted in a separate bed - a school - for growing.

As you already understood, the best time to transplant lilies is the end of summer or the beginning of autumn. However, if necessary, the lily can be transplanted in the spring, and it is advisable to do this before the buds appear.

There is one more important point- if the lilies have nowhere to transplant, or you just want to keep the flower bed in the same place, the flowers can be left to grow here, but the soil must be completely replaced.

Although lilies are perennial flowers, it will not be possible to grow them in the same place for decades, otherwise the flower bed will be too thickened, the flowers will appear smaller every year, and then flowering may stop altogether.

When to replant lilies in the fall

For the normal growth of lilies, a transplant is required about once every three or four years. Some varieties can be replanted less frequently, once every ten years (American hybrids and Marchagon), but it is advisable to replant Tubular and Asian hybrids annually, since their bulbs grow strongly. Three years is the maximum period during which Asian hybrids can grow normally in one place.

We figured out the need to transplant a lily, now we need to decide what time of year it is best to carry out this work. Is it possible to transplant lilies in the fall, or will the plants tolerate better spring transplant? Much depends on what types of lilies are planted in your flower garden, as well as on climatic conditions in your area.

When to replant Tubular and Oriental lilies if they bloom late enough? A month and a half after the end of flowering, cold weather sets in, and the transplanted lilies may simply not take root. If the soil temperature is below zero, replanting lilies can lead to hypothermia of the bulbs and stunted root growth. If autumn frosts begin early enough in your area, it is better to postpone the transplant of these to spring.

V middle lane Of Russia autumn transplant lilies are carried out in August or September, when the inflorescences have already faded, the underground shoots have accumulated nutrient reserves, and several bulbs have formed at once in place of one bulb. In addition, a belated transplant will lead to the fact that the appearance of peduncles the next year will be delayed.

Spring and summer lily transplant

In order for the planting material to lie well in the winter and in the spring to be suitable for planting in open ground, dig up lilies in October so that they properly accumulate nutrients... Shake the roots of the bulbs from the ground, lay in plastic bag with holes for ventilation, laying layers with wet sawdust. You can store the bag of lilies in the refrigerator. In the spring, plant the bulbs in a soil well-warmed by the sun, mixing it with sand and decayed leaves.

When digging, do not damage the roots of the lily and after planting in a new place, water the plant abundantly

Unlike most types of lilies, the transplant of a snow-white lily (candidum) occurs in the summer. This type of lily has a special vegetative cycle - its dormant period falls on July-August, in such a short period you need to have time to transplant the plant. Exquisite and beautiful lilies have adorned gardens all over the world for centuries. It is easy to care for and quite unpretentious plants, which gardeners fell in love with precisely because of this. In this article, we will look at how to transplant lilies in the fall to another place.

Lilies are perennial flowers that are large and bright inflorescences... They cannot be grown in one place for more than 4 years. The fact is that these flowers quickly form new bulbs and the flowerbed thickens. Over time, the flowers become smaller, affected by diseases and degenerate. To prevent this from happening, they need to be transplanted.

Gardeners recommend replanting lilies every 3-4 years. But there are some varieties with their own "requirements" for transplanting: some need annual movement, others grow well in one place up to 10 years.

Now let's look at when to replant lilies. It is generally accepted that the most favorable period for this procedure is autumn. After the summer flowering, the bulbs are dormant: they do not throw out the shoots and are ready to move to another place. Moving is possible only 1-1.5 months after the plant stops blooming. This point must be taken into account.

But again, one should make a reservation, since a lot depends on the variety of lilies, its flowering time and the climate in the region. For example, oriental and tubular hybrids need to be replanted in the spring, as they bloom almost all September. If they are planted before winter, then they are unlikely to take root.

When to replant lilies in the fall

Having dealt with the need to conduct autumn works for transplanting lily bushes, you need to determine the exact timing of their implementation. Agree, you cannot throw the bulbs into the frozen ground and expect them to bloom abundantly next year.

Transplanting lilies in the fall depends on the timing of flowering. Flowers with an early maturity fade in late June-July, with an average maturity in mid-August. It is optimal to transplant such plants in August or September.

If the transplant is carried out at a later date, then you need to look at the weather. If it keeps warm and sunny weather then the bulbs can be moved to another location. However, in this case, you need to take care of a good shelter for the winter, otherwise the peduncles may be delayed next year.

How to transplant lilies

Many novice gardeners are interested in how to transplant lilies to another place in the fall. The procedure must be carried out correctly, only in this case the plants will develop well and please with lush inflorescences. A competent lily transplant consists of several stages, each of which will be analyzed further.

Digging the bulbs

When 1-1.5 months have passed after flowering, the bulbs need to be dug out. First you need to dig a bush with a pitchfork at a distance of at least 20 cm from the stem. This must be done very carefully so as not to damage adult tubers and "children".

The stems should be trimmed with sharp pruners, even if they are green. After you have dug up the bulbs, sort them by size and carefully inspect for any damage. Then peel off damaged and old scales. Shorten the roots by about 1/3: this is necessary so that the bulbs then quickly overgrow with new roots. Planting material must be absolutely healthy, without visible damage and rotting roots yellow color.

Preparing the future flower bed

The place for transplanting lilies must be prepared in advance, about 2-3 weeks in advance. For a future flower bed, choose sunny place, a light partial shade is also suitable, but without a close occurrence of groundwater and with a slight natural slope. If there are no such conditions, then special drainage should be done:

  • dig a trench 40 cm deep;
  • take 15 cm of them for drainage, which consists of a mixture of gravel and sand in equal proportions;
  • apply fertilizer per 1 sq. m. 1 bucket of humus + 200 g of ash + 2 tbsp. l. mineral fertilizers.

Before transplanting, it is useful to soak the bulbs in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour. This will serve as a good prevention against many plant diseases. After soaking, the tubers must be dried. It is advisable to do this on fresh air but not sunlight.

Planting depth and distance

Immediately before planting, you can start making holes. Optimum depth embedding for large tubers is 12-15 cm, for smaller ones - 7-10 cm.

Lily varieties that have large peduncles fall under the exception. They need to be planted 3-4 cm deeper. Some varieties, for example, snow-white lily, need to be planted at a shallow depth - no more than 3 cm, so that the tops of the scales are on the surface of the earth.

"Children" need to be transplanted to a specially designated area. The depth of the holes should not be more than 5 cm.

It is worth remembering that it is better to plant the tubers shallowly than to deepen too much. Otherwise, the bulb may rot, especially if groundwater too close. Shallow-planted bulbs are more likely to grow, but there are risks as well. V cold winter they can freeze. But, if we consider that the bulbs tend to self-deepen, then this risk is minimized.

The distance between the lilies depends on your taste - they can be planted in rows or curtains. In the first case, there should be at least 25 cm between the rows, and at least 10 cm between the tubers in the groove.In the second case, a distance of 25-30 cm will be optimal.

Transfer

After all the completions are over, you need to proceed with the transplant itself:

  • in a dug hole or trench, make a small mound for each plant;
  • take the onion, gently straighten the roots and place them on this mound;
  • sprinkle with sand on top (this is necessary for quick rooting);
  • cover the hole or trench with earth and water;
  • then mulch the soil 2-4 cm (you can take needles, fallen leaves or sawdust as mulch).

As a rule, lilies are well resistant to frost (with the exception of oriental hybrids). It is not necessary to cover the landings. If the work was carried out late and there is no particular certainty that the bulbs will survive the cold, then the beds can be insulated with coniferous spruce branches or dry foliage. This will ensure additional protection from the coming frosts.

If you transplant lilies in this way, they will bloom in the very first summer. The main thing is to meet all deadlines and adhere to all instructions. Then the plants will delight gardeners with luxurious flowering and stunning aroma. Lilies bloom from June to October - you can create a real garden of miracles if you plant lilies different terms flowering.
