The third millennium, in which we began to live, will be the era of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. China, Korea, Japan are rapidly developing states that have become advanced in many areas of the economy, at the same time, countries with ancient traditions. Geographically and economically, the APR countries are our closest neighbors and partners. It is symbolic that at the beginning of the new millennium our department was opened (2000).
general information
The department was opened in 2000 on the basis of the department of regional studies, after almost ten years of teaching oriental languages as a second foreign language at the translation department. The first head of the department was Associate Professor, Ph.D. Barashkova Svetlana Nikolaevna.
The first teachers of oriental languages were graduates of the Khabarovsk and Blagoveshchensk Pedagogical Universities. After two years of work at the department, she was sent to graduate school and defended her Ph.D. thesis in Korean philology at the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow State University, a graduate of the Khabarovsk State Pedagogical University Tatyana Leonidovna Nikolaeva, who became the head of the department in 2006.
Since 2014, the head of the department is Elena Stepanovna Rufova, Ph.D. in Philology, a graduate of the Khabarovsk State Pedagogical University and Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management, who defended her Ph.D. thesis at the North-Eastern Federal University named after I. M.K. Ammosova.

The teachers of the department conduct the following courses: a practical course of the main language (Japanese, Chinese, Korean), the basics of hieroglyphic writing, an introduction to special philology, theoretical phonetics, lexicology, theoretical grammar, stylistics, history of the main language, theory and practice of translation, text theory, foundations philological work with text, listening and interpreting media texts, basics of information and analytical work, history of world literature, introduction to literary criticism, theory of literature, history and culture of the country of the target language, basics of intercultural communication, foreign language (English) for students of 1, 2 courses Eastern department, foreign language (Chinese and Japanese) for students of the Faculty of History and the Institute of Nuclear Medicine.
The department trains qualified specialists with knowledge of one of the oriental languages from a zero level of language proficiency. For 4 years of study, graduates achieve a sufficient level of language proficiency for conducting professional and educational activities. The department closely cooperates and receives support from the Consulates General of Japan, Korea, the State Chancellery for the Spread of the Chinese Language Abroad under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China represented by the Confucius Institute at FEFU (Vladivostok). The department participates in international exchange programs at the university and institute level. The department is working on double certification.

Department graduates
Graduates work in various organizations: from the Ministry of External Relations to private firms. The penetration of oriental languages into the secondary schools of the republic is gradually taking place. Our graduates teach at the City National Gymnasium, secondary schools № 16, 5, 17, Sakha-Korean school, ulus schools.
The level of equipment of the institute with educational and laboratory equipment meets the requirements. Students study in a computer class, in classrooms with an interactive whiteboard. The provision of new learning technologies with technical means is consistent. In the classroom, tape recorders, computers connected to the Internet are used. A projector and screen are also involved.
Department of Oriental Languages The Faculty of Translation teaches Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
The department employs highly qualified specialists with extensive experience in teaching, methodological and professional translation work. The Korean sector employs 2 candidates of philological sciences, 1 candidate of pedagogical sciences; in Vietnamese - 1 candidate of philological sciences and 1 candidate of historical sciences; in Arabic - 2 candidates of philological sciences and 1 candidate of historical sciences; in Persian - 1 candidate of philological sciences and 1 doctor of philological sciences. The department also employs native speakers.
The curriculum of the department is entrusted with teaching the disciplines of theoretical and practical cycles for students studying in the direction of training 45.03.02 Linguistics (profile "Translation and Translation Studies") and specialty 45.05.01 Translation and Translation Studies (specialization "Linguistic support of military activities"), including including such theoretical disciplines as introduction to special philology and history of language, theoretical grammar, lexicology, stylistics, theory of translation, history of literature of the countries of the target language; from the disciplines of the practical cycle - a practical course in a foreign language, a workshop on the culture of speech communication, a practical course in translation (written and oral).
The department also provides teaching of oriental languages at the institute (faculty) of international relations and socio-political sciences in the areas of training 41.03.01 "Foreign regional studies" and 41.03.05 "International relations".
The teachers of the department carry out practice and translation under the master's program in the direction of 45.04.02 Linguistics, classes with trainees and graduate students studying at MSLU under student and academic exchange programs.
The department closely cooperates with schools that provide in-depth teaching of oriental languages. In 2006-2009. representatives of the Arabic and Korean departments of the department participated in the Federal project for the introduction of the Arabic and Korean languages in the secondary school, they have developed textbooks for grades 5-9.
The department conducts scientific work in the field of linguistics, literary criticism, cultural studies, develops effective methods of teaching oriental languages, conducts seminars. The teaching staff takes an active part in the work of scientific conferences in Russia and abroad. Scientists and teachers of the department have created fundamental textbooks that are in demand in universities teaching these languages.
The department maintains close contacts with higher educational institutions of Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Turkey and a number of Arab countries. There is an exchange of teachers and students, there is the possibility of scientific internships. Teachers, scientists of the department are invited to the universities of the countries with which the corresponding cooperation agreements have been signed, to work and deliver lectures.
In connection with the strengthening of the economic position of the countries of the Far East and the revision by Russia of its political guidelines, the demand for specialists with knowledge of oriental languages is steadily increasing on the labor market. Let's try to answer the question of where and how oriental languages are taught in Moscow universities.
If the applicant has firmly decided not only to learn the oriental language at one of the universities in Moscow, but also to acquire a deep knowledge of the culture of the country of the studied language, then it is best to give preference to the specialty "Oriental and African studies". You can get this specialty only in five metropolitan universities:

Prestigious: National Research University Higher School of Economics
The HSE Department of Oriental Studies, which since the current academic year separated from the Faculty of Philosophy and became part of the Faculty of Economics and World Politics, was opened in 2009. What makes this department especially interesting is that it not only fundamentally teaches oriental languages and cultures, but also acquaints students with the methods and ways of working in the countries of the East. Largely due to the business orientation of the department, he managed to overtake the Mecca of orientalists of the past in terms of passing score and cost of education - the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University.
Meanwhile, such a young department cannot boast of a rich selection of languages offered for learning. The four most demanded areas are being actively developed here: Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arab. The compulsory program includes the study of one oriental language, however, from the second year (subject to good academic performance), as part of an elective, you can also begin to master a second oriental language. Whether it is possible to master two oriental languages in just 4 years of study is up to the student to decide.
Fundamental: Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov
An applicant who can boast of good language training, excellent USE results, deep knowledge of history (according to which the faculty conducts an additional entrance exam) and an unshakable desire to become an excellent orientalist, first of all, it is worth trying to enter the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University. Here, ordinary schoolchildren are turned into specialists who are not only fluent in the oriental language, but also versed in literature, history, culture, politics and economics of the country of the target language.
And, of course, no higher educational institution in Moscow can compete with ISAA in the number of languages offered for learning oriental languages. So, at the philological department of the faculty, eight departments are currently conducting educational activities:
- Arabic philology (Arabic language and its dialects);
- Japanese Philology (Japanese);
- Chinese Philology (Chinese);
- Iranian philology (Persian, Dari, Pashto and Tajik languages, as well as (additionally) Armenian and Georgian languages);
- Indian philology (Hindi, Urdu and Tamil languages);
- Turkic philology (Turkish, Turkmen and Uzbek languages);
- philology of the countries of Southeast Asia, Korea and Mongolia (Vietnamese, Korean, Indonesian, Malaysian, Filipino, Mongolian, Burmese, Khmer and Lao-Thai languages);
- Western European languages (specializing in teaching a second foreign language).
To enter the Institute of Asian and African Countries is no easier than to other faculties of Moscow State University, to study is very difficult (especially if the applicant plans to study the oriental language from scratch). But after four years of sleepless nights and cramming khuruf with hieroglyphs, the graduate will receive an invaluable store of knowledge, a coveted diploma and a flurry of interesting proposals from employers. By the way, it is possible to study oriental languages at this university in Moscow on a contract basis: in 2014, the faculty allocated 41 contract places. However, as usual at Moscow State University, it will cost a lot: the cost of training in the 2014/15 academic year was 325,000 rubles.
Available: Moscow City Pedagogical University
MGPU is one of the most democratic universities in Moscow, where you can study oriental languages. So, for admission to the budget in 2014 in the specialty "Oriental and African Studies" (profile "Languages and Literature of Asian and African Countries - Chinese"), the applicant had to score only 227 points on the Unified State Exam. And in the profile "Japanese" - 235 points. 10 budgetary and 10 extrabudgetary places are allocated for each direction.
Note that the profile “Translation and Translation Studies” (with the assignment of a linguist qualification) is slightly more popular in this Moscow university. The passing score for the Chinese language department in 2014 was 247 points, and for the Japanese language department - 246 points. Each of the departments accepts 5 students for budgetary places and 10 for non-budgetary ones. However, the cost of tuition on a paid basis at the Institute of Foreign Languages at the Moscow State Pedagogical University is only 150,000 rubles a year, so even the above points are not so critical.
Despite the fact that the departments of the Chinese and Japanese languages at the Moscow City Pedagogical University were opened only in 2006, they managed to establish international cooperation and organize free internships for students in the country of the target language. This is especially true of the Department of Chinese Language, from which more than 20 students annually go to China for a year or a semester. In addition, the university employs native-speaking teachers.
For students studying oriental languages at this university in Moscow, it is also mandatory to study English as a second foreign language. In addition, there is an opportunity to study another European language on a paid basis. Of the significant disadvantages for nonresident students, it can be noted that there is no hostel in the Moscow State Pedagogical University.
Unstable: Russian State University for the Humanities
At the RSUH, you can master the specialty "Oriental studies and African studies" at once at two faculties: at the Institute of Oriental Cultures and Antiquity, as well as at the Faculty of History, Political Science and Law of the Historical and Archival Institute of the Russian State University for the Humanities. At the same time, both departments of the university have significantly lost their positions this year. If in 2013 for admission to the specified specialty it was necessary to score 257 points in three USE results, then in 2014 - only 219.
The Department of the Modern East of the Faculty of History, Political Science and Law implements a curriculum in five areas: Arabian, Sinic, Iranian, Turkic and Japanese studies. However, the main teaching languages are only Arabic and Chinese. At the same time, teaching the Chinese language at the RSUH will cost 190,000 rubles a year, which is 20,000 more expensive than with specialization in other oriental languages.
The Institute of Oriental Cultures and Antiquity has three departments where oriental languages are taught:
- Department of History and Philology of the Ancient East (Arabic and Persian);
- Department of History and Philology of South and Central Asia (Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Tamil, Mongolian, Tibetan, Turkish and Kazakh languages);
- Department of History and Philology of the Far East (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Lao-Thai).
However, it should be borne in mind that in conditions when the faculty allocates only 15 budgetary places for the specialty "Oriental and African Studies", in reality it will be almost impossible to choose for study as the first language, for example, Tibetan. And the opportunity to specialize in "History and Philology of Thailand and Laos" is provided only on a contractual basis. In other words, if an applicant certainly wants to study a rare oriental language, then the only university in Moscow that is ready to guarantee such an opportunity is the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow State University.
Miniature: State Academic University of the Humanities at the Russian Academy of Sciences
Despite the fact that GAUGN is the only university in Russia that was founded on the basis of the Russian Academy of Sciences, its popularity is not so high. There are very few budgetary places at the university (and there are none at all for the specialty "Oriental and African studies"), there is no hostel, academic buildings are located in different districts of Moscow and, as a result, there are few students at the university, and most of them have very modest USE results. So, in 2014, only 5 students were enrolled at GAUGN for the specialty "Oriental and African Studies", four of whom have USE results below 200.
The most significant disadvantage of teaching oriental languages at this Moscow university is that no one here actually specializes in languages. Orientalists are trained here at the Department of Philosophical and Political Thought of the East, which has a very, very indirect relationship to philology.
The second option to study oriental languages in Moscow universities is to study to be a philologist, linguist, translator or teacher. This opportunity is provided by a number of metropolitan educational institutions. Of those universities that have not been described above, it is worth highlighting:
Moscow State Linguistic University
At the Department of Oriental Languages of the Faculty of Translation, Moscow State Linguistic University, you can learn Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Persian and Korean. Under the direction of "Translation and Translation Studies" in this university in Moscow allocated 110 budget places (for all languages, including European). The passing mark in 2014 was 237 points, training is conducted only on the budget. It is interesting that this educational institution accepts the USE results not only in the usual English, German and French, but also in Spanish.
Naturally, in a language university with such a rich history and good reputation, one should count on deep and comprehensive language teaching. The department cooperates with many educational institutions in Turkey, Japan, China, Korea and some Arab countries, so excellent students sometimes go on free internships. The term of study at the faculty is 5 years (specialist qualification).
Moscow State Pedagogical University
At the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State Pedagogical University, you can get a pedagogical education with two profiles at once - Russian and foreign (Chinese) language. In other words, a graduate of this department will be able to teach Russian and Chinese. In 2014, the university allocated 20 budget places for this specialty, and the passing score was 228 points. The cost of training on a commercial basis is only 115,000 rubles per year. The duration of study, despite the fact that the graduate is awarded a bachelor's degree, is 5 years.
Peoples' Friendship University of Russia
At the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, oriental languages can be studied only in additional professional education programs (Arabic, Chinese and Persian), as well as in a magistracy as a second foreign language (only Chinese).
Some non-state universities in Moscow also specialize in teaching oriental languages, for example:
This commercial linguistic university in Moscow allows students to learn the most in-demand oriental languages: Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Arabic, Turkish, Hindi and Farsi. In addition, learning English is mandatory as a second foreign language. And although the cost of studying at the Institute of Oriental Countries is quite high for a non-state university - in 2014 it was 174,000 rubles in full-time studies for 2 semesters (duration of study is 4 years) - the quality of education deserves it. The fact is that the university operates on the basis of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. And graduates are awarded a diploma with the assignment of a very prestigious specialty "Linguist".
The rather high USE score of students who entered the Institute of Oriental Countries in 2014 also speaks of the demand for the educational institution: many have it above 200, and the score of some students would allow them to study oriental languages at pedagogical universities in Moscow or the Russian State University for the Humanities on a budgetary basis. In 2015, the institute plans to enroll 23 students in the first year of the Faculty of Linguistics.
International independent ecological and political university
This non-state university in Moscow is implementing a joint Russian-Chinese program with the Qingdao University of Technology and Science. After successfully completing the program, which takes 5 years, graduates are awarded an international Chinese bachelor's degree. At the same time, the first year of study takes place in Russia, and the next four - in China.
Students have the opportunity to choose one of three specialties:
- international management (management and economics);
- international law (jurisprudence);
- environmental protection (ecology and nature management).
The cost of training is 150,000 rubles per year in Russia and 79,700 rubles per year in China. Enrollment is carried out based on test results (USE results are not required).

In the 2008 academic year, by the decision of the Academic Council of the Moscow State University of Economics, with the assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey, a department of the Turkish language was opened at the Moscow State University for the Humanities and Economics. The Department of Oriental Languages trains linguists and translators. Classes are taught by highly qualified teachers, including native speakers of Turkish. The department conducts research work on topical problems of Turkic studies and teaching foreign languages. FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT - HISTORICAL REFERENCE
The current Department of Languages of the Near and Middle East of MGIMO-University is the educational, scientific and structural successor of the Department of Arabic Studies, created in 1871-72 simultaneously with special classes at the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages (the latter was formed in 1827 on the basis of the Armenian Lazarev School, established in 1814 by the Armenian philanthropist and nobleman Joachim Lazaryan, 1744-1826), where, along with the languages of the peoples of the Caucasus, for the first time in Moscow, teaching and scientific study of the languages of the Middle East began.
The department managed to preserve and develop the continuity of the Russian Arabic and Oriental studies, when in 1920, after an almost two-year hiatus and reorganizations, the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages was transformed into the Central Institute of Living Oriental Languages, and in 1921 - into the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies (MIV). In 1954, the MIV was merged with the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in addition to the Arabic language, the department became an educational, methodological and scientific base for teaching also Turkish, Farsi and Hebrew.
A great contribution to the initial formation and development of the department, to teaching and research work was made by a whole galaxy of prominent scientists of oriental studies. In this regard, mention should be made of Professor G.A. Murkos (1846-1911), a native of Damascus, a graduate of the Faculty of Oriental Languages of St. Petersburg University, the first to head the department of Arabic studies at the Lazarev Institute, a connoisseur of pre-Islamic poetry, author of the "Sketch of New Arab Literature" and other works; who replaced him as head of the department, also a Syrian, Professor M.O. Attay (1852-1924) - the author of textbooks and the Arabic-Russian dictionary; Russian-Ukrainian Arabist, academician A.E. Krymsky (1871-1942) - a talented teacher, scientist, writer and translator, known for his works on Islam, Semitic languages, history and literature of the Arabs. In the early period of its formation, such famous Iranianists as I.N. Kholmogorov (1818-1891) and F.E. Korsh (1843-1915) directly collaborated with the department, who in his works traced the mutual influence and differences in Arabic and Persian poetry. ...
For half a century (from 1924 to 1975), the department was headed by Professor Kh.K. Baranov (1892-1980), known in Russia and throughout the world as an outstanding Arabist scholar who created the Moscow Arabic school. A graduate of the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages (1915), his creative destiny until the end of his life was associated with scientific and pedagogical activities, one of the most unique fruits of which was the Arabic-Russian dictionary (1940-1946, with additions in subsequent lifetime editions) - the first complete dictionary of modern Arabic literary language, to this day proving its versatility and indispensability for Arabists of all specialties. The preface to its 1st edition was written by Academician I.Yu. Krachkovsky (1883-1951). A major event in the cultural life of Russia in 1965 was the publication, translated by Kh.K. Baranov, of Al-Jahiz's "Book of the Stingy". All of us, his colleagues and former students, are dear and remember his humorous commandment: "Learn Arabic, at least with the help of witchcraft!"
In the pre-war years, Arabic philology at the department was developed by the famous Arabist and Semitologist, Professor BM Grande, who created the most important academic work - "The Course of Arabic Grammar in Comparative Historical Illumination", published in 1963 under the editorship of Kh.K. Baranova... In the same years, a remarkable teacher, Arab-Palestinian Tager A. Il-Farhi (-1965), began to work at the department, who, together with V. N. Krasnovsky, compiled a unique pocket "Russian-Arabic dictionary" (1959).
During World War II, MIV was in evacuation in Fergana, where the teaching of the Arabic language, like other languages of the Near and Middle East, continued. Krachkovsky at the Faculty of Oriental Languages of St. University. She invested her knowledge and experience in scientific research, translating samples of Arabic literature, creating teaching aids, for example, Samples of New Arab Literature (1928, 1949) are still successfully used in the educational process.
In the post-war period, NS Kamensky (- 1951) left a noticeable mark on the activities of the department with his original work "An Introductory Course of the Modern Arabic Literary Language" (1952). Attention was also paid to mastering the skills of oral speech. The first experience in this area was the "Arabic phrasebook" by T.A. il-Farhi (1947). The works of Associate Professor A.F. Sultanov (1904-1996), who had extensive practical experience in Arab countries and who worked for many years at the Department of MIV and MGIMO, were devoted to the issues of Arabic dialectology. He also owns the first two articles devoted to the problems of the modern period of Arab literature: "Egyptian Literature at a New Stage" (1955) and "The Main Milestones in the Development of Modern Culture in Egypt" (1957). During these years, great importance was attached to the study of the language of the Arabic press. In order to get to know him in 1950, A.F. Sultanov created special anthologies for junior students and T.A. il-Farhi - for senior students, and in 1956 AF Sultanov and VN Krasnovsky published a new "Reader of Arabic newspaper and magazine texts". The development of teaching methods required the creation of new, previously unknown types of manuals. So, for the extracurricular work of students, V.N. Krasnovsky in 1954 compiled a "Reader for Home Reading" (for the first and second years), and two years later K.V. Ode-Vasilieva and V.N. Krasnovsky released it Extended edition. In 1955, Arabists received another textbook, prepared by K. V. Ode-Vasilyeva - "Samples of Arabic Cursive Writing", and in 1965 - "Collection of Arabic Cursive Writing" by R.Z. Aytuganov, which made it possible for an Arabist to acquire skills quickly and correctly understand Arabic business documents and commercial correspondence, study a variety of Arabic handwriting.

An unsurpassed expert in the Arabic language, Professor V.I.Soloviev was the author of the first textbook on political translation for senior students.
The most original and talented figure at the department for half a century was an outstanding teacher, Arabist-encyclopedist, professor V.N. Krasnovsky (1927-1997). Thanks to his teaching talent, wide erudition, high professionalism and ability to inspire students with his creative energy, he left a deep mark in the minds and hearts of a number of generations of his pets.
It is also impossible not to mention the students of the department who made a remarkable contribution to Arabic studies while still studying within the walls of MGIMO. An example of this is the work prepared by Arab student Arayik Melikyan in 1978-79.

Hebrew has been taught at the department since the mid-1970s. The most famous Hebraists who worked at MGIMO were F.L. Shapiro and A.I. Rubinstein. A significant contribution to the development of the Hebraic school at the department was made by the candidate of historical sciences Krylov A.V. Currently, Hebrew as the first foreign language is taught by Associate Professor Yu.I. Kostenko, the author of a unique textbook of the Hebrew language, recognized not only in Russia, but also abroad, including in the leading educational centers of the State of Israel.
Since 1995, the department has a sector of Turkic languages. This is due to the fact that, in addition to the Turkish language, the department teaches Turkic languages: since 1995 - the Azerbaijani language, since 2000 - the Turkmen and Uzbek languages.
Experienced teachers stood at the origins of the formation of scientific and methodological traditions of teaching Turkic languages at MGIMO: Azerbaijani language - associate professor M.G. MMKlycheva and AMSamatov continue their successful and fruitful teaching activities at the department. In the 2004-2005 academic year, O.M. Orazmammedov took part in teaching the Turkmen language, in the 2008-2010 academic year, the graduate of MGIMO A.S. Telyakov taught the Azerbaijani language, and from 2010 to the present, the Azerbaijani language is taught by the Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics, known scientist-literary critic, associate professor A.M.
