DIY installation of ceiling plinths. Installation of ceiling plinths

One of the final stages of renovation work in the room is the installation of a ceiling plinth. Choosing a plinth is a serious task. On the one hand, it is designed to hide the joints between the surfaces of the ceiling and walls, and on the other hand, it plays an extremely important role in terms of design in the decoration of the room.

Skirting boards should fit into the interior, not violate the harmony of the color scheme of walls and ceilings, etc. Laying fillets, especially with your own hands, is quite an exciting experience. But in order for a room to delight you with its complete look for a long time, you need to have a little knowledge: how to properly lay the plinth and how to glue the ceiling plinth.

Ceiling skirting in the kitchen: simple but tasteful

We hope that all the material presented below, which describes the installation of skirting boards, video and photo illustrations, will be of great help to you in this.

If you are going to fix the ceiling plinth yourself, then the rules below will help you avoid annoying mistakes. Finishing work begins with the purchase of material.

In rooms with high ceilings, a wide baguette will look very impressive.

The calculation of the required amount of material is quite simple. Calculate the perimeter of the room and divide by two - this is the standard length of the ceiling molding. Round up the resulting quotient, because when you make the corner joint, part of the baguette will definitely go to waste.

Skirting board installation methods

There are two ways to mount baguettes on the ceiling.

  • Installation over wallpaper or painted walls. In this case, the surface for the skirting boards is already leveled, since the molding is attached to the finish.
  • The second option is more complicated, but at the same time more practical. Molding with this method is laid and glued directly to the wall. It, of course, is putty and primed before finishing fasteners. As a result, after painting, as a rule, in a uniform color, the ceiling with the plinth merges into a single whole.

Wallpaper at the glued baguette is cut with a spatula and a knife

Advice: according to professionals, the second gluing option is preferable. Firstly, gluing the molding over the wallpaper reduces the quality of the fastening. Secondly, after their installation, cracks and joints may still remain, which will have to be repaired with a putty or sealant. And how far it will be possible to eliminate these defects and not damage the wall decoration is a question. And, finally, thirdly, nothing will prevent you from re-gluing the wallpaper or repainting the walls. Everything can be done without gluing the eaves.

Installation of a skirting board for a stretch ceiling has its own nuances.

  • Preference for installation should be given to lightweight panels.
  • Mounting method - by painting or gluing.
  • The panels cannot be fixed to the stretch ceiling.
  • Before starting installation work, the canvas must be protected with polyethylene.

Cutting skirting boards for the ceiling

The hardest part of installing skirting boards is joining the baguettes in the corners without gaps or crevices. To do this, you need to cut them at the correct angle. This process is greatly simplified if you use a miter box.

How to properly trim the baguette for the inner and outer corners when installing the molding

For ceiling molding, the simplest version of the tool with a two-degree cutoff shape - 45 and 90 - is suitable.

The molding must be placed in the miter box the way it will be attached when glued to the wall - pressing the lower edge intended for fastening to the miter box wall.

Molding installation: how to properly trim the baguette for non-standard corners

On a note: in multi-storey buildings, the walls are rarely absolutely perpendicular, so you often have to adjust the molding angle manually.

Corner adjustment when installing skirting boards

During installation, baguettes can be cut without a miter box, especially if the corners in the room are not completely straight. In this case, they get by with improvised means. How to make a stencil is not difficult at all - it must exactly repeat the outer or inner corners of the wall. The template is usually cut out of cardboard.

Important: this method is not suitable for hollow skirting boards. In this case, a corner is constructed from any available material where the panel can be put. It is used like a wort.

The better to glue skirting boards for the ceiling

All glue for curtain rods is divided according to its composition into acrylic and polymer. How to glue skirting boards to the ceiling depends on the functional purpose of the room. For a nursery, for example, the molding is installed only on acrylic glue. If we are talking about how to attach a plinth in the bathroom, then it is better to glue it on a polymer one.

What can you glue the plinth for the ceiling

Acrylic products are based on water, so they do not have a pungent smell, but you cannot glue cornices on them in wet rooms. Polymeric ones, on the contrary, are suitable for gluing in rooms with high humidity, but they dry out for a long time and they leave a specific and not very pleasant smell in the room. Despite the existing disadvantages, polymer adhesives are very popular for gluing curtain rods.

The modern market is distinguished by a large variety of gluing compositions for different purposes and "setting" times. However, when you are interested in how to glue a ceiling plinth, among professionals you most often hear such names as "Titan", "Moment" and "Eco-Set".

Universal glue "Titan" for gluing curtain rods

Glue "Titan" is universal. It is suitable for gluing linoleum, floor plinths, ceramics, glass, carpet, etc. "Titanium" is colorless and completely transparent, so it can be used to glue expensive ceiling materials. The composition is suitable for gluing foam and polystyrene.

An excellent installation option for polyurethane skirting boards and ceiling tiles is with Eco-Set glue. You can glue on almost any substrate, be it brick, plaster, concrete, wood or gypsum board.

Moment glue quickly sets when gluing cornices

This composition justifies its name - "Moment". Installation for skirting boards is extremely fast. Glue the parts with a sealant gun. The glue not only "grabs" instantly, but also perfectly holds the glued element. And this is very convenient, because standing up the plinth while it is glued, you see, is completely inconvenient. But this glue is quite expensive, moreover, it is more consumed.

Installation of external corners of wooden skirting boards

On a note: wooden fillets can be attached not only with glue, but also glued on liquid nails or installed on screws and nails.

Baguettes can also be glued to homemade glue from scrap materials. For example, products made of polystyrene and gypsum are usually glued to a putty composition. By the way, with the same solution, which retains its working condition for about two hours, it is possible to close up the gaps formed when the panels are fixed to each other and to the ceiling with walls.

It is better to take glue for gluing the plinth on the wallpaper colorless or to match the wallpaper

The composition is prepared from fine putty, water and PVA, taken in a ratio of one to one and to one fourth. The components of the mixture are well kneaded until creamy and allowed to settle for several minutes.

How to fix a ceiling plinth

Before gluing, the surface of the walls and ceiling in the places where the plinth is installed are degreased. Let us now analyze how to glue the skirting board to the ceiling. The whole process of installation and gluing is divided into several stages.

The adhesive is applied to the side of the skirting board that is applied to the wall and ceiling surfaces.

Advice: it can be applied pointwise with a step of 10–15 cm. This will allow, without sacrificing the quality of adhesion, to save on the adhesive composition.

After applying the adhesive, the fillet is pressed tightly to the ceiling and kept for the time required for gluing. The installation time is usually indicated on the packaging.

Docking skirting boards at the corner

The fillet should not be pressed into all uneven parts of the ceiling when gluing, as it may crack. The slots that form during their attachment can be “closed” using excess adhesive for gluing, or even better, masked with putty.

It will be useful to additionally see how to glue the ceiling plinth video tutorial.

Master class: do-it-yourself plinth installation

Let's take a closer look at how to properly glue the ceiling plinth - plastic and foam.

How to fix a Styrofoam ceiling skirting board

The area on the ceiling, to which the fillet will be attached, is primed with a strip slightly exceeding its width. To do this, it is recommended to make a markup using a measure corresponding to the size of the fillet. The marking lines are drawn in 30 cm increments.

How to get a mark on a ceiling surface

Next, the inner corners are adjusted. They put the plinth in a corner and draw a 6–7 cm line along it on the ceiling. Repeat the same on the other side of the corner. Having applied two plinths at the same time, mark the intersection point on them.

Corner adjustment: skirting marks

Lay the plank with the side adjacent to the ceiling on a flat surface and cut along a conventional line.

Trimming the skirting board

Acrylic sealant works well for bonding. It is applied to the fillet with a pistol and pressed to adhere to the main surface, following the marks made earlier.

The plinth is installed when gluing according to the marks made

Excess squeezed out adhesive after installation can be easily removed with a damp cloth or simply with your finger.

Transverse joints must be putty. You can seal the seams with acrylic putty. It is applied using a rubber spatula in three layers, after which it is sanded.

Preparation for painting after installing the eaves

The work is completed by decorating foam baguettes, for example, painting in the appropriate color.

How to fix PVC ceiling skirting boards

Today, plastic suspended panels are very popular, and, as a rule, the joints of the walls and ceiling are decorated with plastic skirting boards.

Joint place after installation of PVC panels

The edges of the crate, on which the panels were attached, are fixed in order to prevent them from sagging under the weight of the fillet and their weight after installation. The skirting board is attached to the last one.

Securing the lathing

Baguettes must be trimmed at 45 degrees in advance. Plastic is easy to cut, so cutting can be done with a hacksaw, knife or scissors.

Methods for cutting PVC skirting boards

The edge of the panel is inserted into the groove of the baguette and adjusted with tapping movements.

Plinth installation

In the corners, fillets are tightly fitted to each other.

Fitting panels

The joints in the corners can be decorated with special plastic corners or simply treated with silicone.

Beautiful framing of a plastic false ceiling

To many who have not come across finishing work, it seems that all the talk about how to glue the ceiling plinth is a simple waste of time, because this process is not difficult. But one has only to collide, and it turns out that the work requires increased attention. It is impossible to install fillets if their features are not taken into account, there is no clear plan of action, and the composition for fixing is not determined. If all this is not taken into account, then the consequences will be very sad: fragments will begin to fall off, cracks will appear in the joints, incorrectly formed corners will ruin the whole appearance.

Do-it-yourself installation of a ceiling plinth should begin with the choice of a fillet. There are many types of products with significant differences.

First of all, you need to know that baguettes differ in shape. So, it is customary to highlight:

  1. Parts with grooves, well-visible longitudinal depressions - this is an extruded version.
  2. Elements with a well-convex, highly embossed surface - injection type.
  3. The variety, which has a very smooth finish, belongs to the laminated type.

But the differences in the material of manufacture are much stronger. It is this feature that determines the final characteristics of the product, gives the best idea of \u200b\u200bhow to properly glue the fillets into place.

This option is considered the most versatile and very practical. It has a lot of advantages:

  • Due to its high strength, the profile has a long service life.
  • It does not lose its external properties even if it is exposed to direct sunlight.
  • There is a variety that is flexible, making it easier to work on complex geometric designs.
  • It is not exposed to moisture, which makes it possible to use not only in bathrooms and shower rooms, but also in rooms characterized by constantly high humidity: swimming pools, saunas, baths.
  • Has a wide range of colors and textures.

Polyurethane profile is the only option that can be used on highly curved structures

The gluing of polyurethane baguettes to the ceiling is carried out using special adhesives that do not react with the material and have a good degree of fixation. It is quite simple to mount such a profile; a minimum set of tools is required to work.

With all its advantages, this material has very noticeable disadvantages. They conclude that its cost is far superior to other options, especially when it comes to the flexible variety. It is also taken into account that the elements have a sufficiently large weight, which limits their use with stretch ceilings.

Foam profile

Foam fillets are rightfully considered the most popular, because they are available to the majority of the population, while endowed with excellent qualities and appearance. In addition, they have a number of other advantages:

  • They have a low weight, which allows them to be used for stretch ceilings, as well as to perform work without attracting additional forces.
  • Easy to process, which reduces installation time.
  • If required, the surface can be painted many times, and this creates endless possibilities for design solutions.

Also, we must not forget that this type of fillets has negative qualities, which are associated with the fact that the products have hanging fragility and are easily damaged.

In addition, it is this option that has the most restrictions on the use of fixing compounds. When deciding how to glue the foam skirting board to the ceiling, take into account that the adhesive solutions used should not contain any solvents in their composition. The fact is that their presence is a direct path to complete deformation of parts that literally dissolve from the effect of this substance.

PVC profile

This type of fillet is a product that is made from polyvinyl chloride. And if it's simpler, then it's a simple plastic. PVC profile is most often used in the case of wall cladding with plastic panels. But this is an optional condition.

PVC fillets have the following advantages:

  • They are quite cheap, although this parameter is much higher than that of foam products.
  • They have an abundance of colors and imitations. If necessary, you can pick up details that will repeat the natural cut of wood or stone.
  • Impervious to moisture. According to this indicator, they are superior to polyurethane.

For gluing, universal adhesives are used, which are marked as suitable for PVC. Although plastic has impressive advantages, it cannot be stained, which is important to consider.

Wooden profile

The widespread use of wooden fillets is declining. This is facilitated by:

  1. The high cost of the material. At the same time, we are not talking about rare breeds, even widespread species have a high cost. Of course, in specialized hardware stores you can also find inexpensive wooden moldings, but they are of very low quality.
  2. Not the easiest processing procedure. To perfectly fit the parts, they must be laid on a flat surface and the trimming must be done very carefully. The resulting defects are very difficult to hide under a layer of putty.
  3. Installation is a series of laborious procedures. Before gluing the ceiling plinth, you should decide whether this will happen by means of putty or glue. The first option is often preferable. Further, additional fixing measures are carried out - on self-tapping screws, dowels or nails, the choice of fasteners depends on the base.

Of course, wood fillet is a real luxury. It is she who is able to give the room a certain aristocratic look. It is important to take into account that walls lined with clapboard, wood panels cannot look good without such an element. Attempts to replace the profile with a modern version will lead to the interior losing its appearance.

On a note! Gypsum varieties are also becoming less popular. They are distinguished by their unsurpassed appearance. But many synthetic products began to copy this feature. In addition, the stucco molding can only be applied to a plaster solution.

Adhesion taking into account the width of the product

It is impossible to talk about how to glue the ceiling plinth with your own hands with high quality, if you do not take into account its width. This indicator directly affects the technology of the sticker and the general appearance of the room. The following features are taken into account:

  • Wide details are perfect for rooms with high ceilings, as they visually reduce their height. To get a reliable fix, the composition is applied along the entire seamy side, this will prevent the glued elements from falling off.
  • Fillets small in width are an excellent solution when ceilings need to be visually raised. Fastening is carried out pointwise if lightweight products are used.
  • Fragments of medium width are considered the most acceptable; they are used everywhere. Ceiling skirting boards of this size can be glued using all known methods.

On a note! The appearance of the product is of great importance during installation. So, fully processed, painted, textured elements need a very careful application of adhesives. The fact is that their hit on the front side can lead to the fact that the fillet will be irrevocably damaged.

Design-based gluing

Particular attention should be paid to the external features of the fillet. So, the color of the elements can visually change the perception of the room. For example, if the shades of decorative details and walls match, then the room will seem much smaller.

But then how to properly glue the ceiling plinth, given the shape of the product? There are a number of simple guidelines for this:

  1. The drawing should be selected taking into account what style will dominate the interior. So, the classic variations suggest that the baguettes will have a complex texture, patterns that resemble stucco molding. Modern minimalism strives for simplicity, so thin fillets are suitable for it, the ornament on which is absent or has a clear geometry.
  2. with volumetric shapes, it is better to use for solid surfaces. This option significantly burdens the atmosphere, so it is categorically not suitable for small rooms.
  3. To achieve harmony, the pattern must be combined with the walls or ceiling. This will make the transition as smooth as possible.

Create the most harmonious interior by combining fillet pattern with walls or ceiling

On a note! When working with baguettes that have a complex shape and texture, take into account that these parts are very difficult to fit in the corners. Therefore, it is better for them to purchase special corner overlays.

Basic installation methods

There are various methods that are used when gluing ceiling skirting boards. So it is customary to distinguish two main technologies that allow you to mount the most popular product options: polyurethane and foam.

Method one - using putty

This option is great for situations in which the wallpaper has not yet been pasted. Many masters rightly consider this method to be the most acceptable. The fact is that the untreated surface allows for the best adhesion.

Training

To work, you will need the following set of materials:

  • Directly fillet. It is very convenient that this method is universal and practical for all varieties.
  • Putty. For the process, the most ordinary mixture is used, which is widely sold in stores, you can use the remnants from previous repairs. It is important to pay attention to the shelf life and the integrity of the substance. If the material does not have friability, then it is rejected.

    On a note! For work, a gypsum composition can be selected. But it has one big drawback - fast setting. This limits the time of using the solution, and also does not make it possible to correct the defects that have arisen.

  • Priming. It is used to increase the adhesion of surfaces. It is better to choose formulations with deep penetration.

For gluing the ceiling plinth, the necessary set of tools is selected:

  1. Trimming of parts is carried out using an ordinary hacksaw for metal. It is necessary to use a clerical knife only when the width of the elements does not exceed two centimeters, otherwise the quality will not be as intended.
  2. To form a corner, they resort to the services of a primitive, but very effective device - a miter box.
  3. For applying the putty, a spatula medium in width is suitable - 8-10 cm.
  4. It often happens that the surface of the fillets has a very noticeable roughness, which interferes with quality work. It is removed with sandpaper.

Before fixing the plinth, check that all materials and tools are present. The work turns out to be much more efficient when there is no need to search for the necessary devices in the process of its implementation.

Fixation

Fillets are glued according to a certain scheme, which consists of several stages. It should be borne in mind that when performing work, all actions are adapted to a specific situation.

Stage one:

  • It all starts with an inspection of the area where the baguette will be installed. It often happens, especially after finishing, that small defects and irregularities remain on the surface. To remove them, sandpaper is used, which is fixed on a special bar. Of course, it is better to do such preparatory work in advance.
  • Walls and ceilings are primed. It is important to take into account that even this composition needs training. The simplest option is to mix it normally, but if a concentrate is used, it must be diluted correctly. Further procedures can be carried out only after the surface is completely dry.
  • The markup is required. The easiest way is to attach the part to the desired location. A line is drawn exactly along the edge, which will serve as a reference point.

Wall surface marking
  • Many craftsmen advise measuring the fillet length in advance. That is, measurements of all sections are taken, the fragments are calculated. It is much more convenient to draw up a diagram on a piece of paper. You can skip this step, then the markup will have to be done for each individual element when the direct commit is performed.
  • Parts are being trimmed. It is this process that can cause many problems. You need to be especially careful when working with foam, which crumbles easily from improper exposure. To form corners - use a miter box. It is better to practice a little to determine the correct location of the products in this tool.

Trim skirting at an angle

Stage two:

  • Installation of the ceiling plinth begins with the preparation of the putty mixture. It should be noted that it is kneaded immediately before work in order to exclude the loss of the properties of the finished solution. This process is quite simple: dry matter is poured into the container, which is diluted with the required amount of water. You should get a thick and well-mixed composition.

Advice! It is important to exclude the appearance of lumps or dry residue in the mixture. Therefore, it is recommended to add water first, and then add putty. Each manufacturer places instructions on the label, which must be strictly followed.

  • Now comes the most crucial moment - fixation. For this, a small amount of the prepared solution is collected with a spatula. It is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the baguette, which will directly interact with the ceiling and walls. This procedure is not difficult, but care must be taken that the excess does not fall on the front part.

  • Installation starts from one of the corners. It is believed that it is better to choose a site for this that is in the field of constant visibility. But before gluing the ceiling plinth, check that the applied mixture is not too much. Otherwise, there will be too many residues, which will be difficult to deal with.
  • The part is pressed against the specified location. It is at this moment that those lines that were previously drawn will come in handy. They are used to verify the correctness of the installation. It is not necessary to press too hard, the fresh mortar allows the element to be fixed very quickly. In any case, excess mixture will appear from under the edges. Until the solution has frozen, it is removed.

Advice! It is not always advisable to remove the surplus. It often happens that there are slight irregularities on the surface, in which case the putty fills them perfectly. Thus, fillet edges are formed that do not have any defects.

  • When attaching the second fragment, a natural question arises: how to dock the ceiling plinth correctly? Many people make a typical mistake - they forget to apply the solution directly to the end part. The mixture requires a small amount so that there are no surpluses at all or are minimal. The product is pressed into place, combined with the first element. It is important to achieve a perfect match, because any distortions will be conspicuous.

Each glued piece must be installed clearly in line. It takes time for the material to bond well and dry completely. This takes about a day. Further work consists in the fact that possible flaws caused by the remnants of the mixture are cleaned. If necessary, fillets are primed and painted. To avoid staining adjacent surfaces, masking tape is glued along the edges of the ceiling plinth.

On a note! When work is carried out with fillets, which are highly fragile, pressing is carried out with the back of the hand, without a point stop. This will help to avoid the appearance of dents.

Method two - application of glue

This option is usually used when you need to glue the ceiling plinth on the wallpaper. Although this does not mean that it should not be applied on bare walls. An important condition in this case is that the wallpaper must be glued very securely, because you can diligently and carefully install fillets, but due to defects in the main coating, they will begin to lag behind the wall.

Installation of the ceiling plinth with glue can be done over the finish: painting or wallpapering

Adhesive selection

Before gluing the skirting boards, you need to decide on the choice of adhesive. Currently, there are many options that are suitable for such a task. So, among all the variety, the following stand out:

  1. Universal substances. This category includes solutions that have a very viscous and transparent mass that hardens for a very long time. The most popular options are called "Titan". These products are recommended for work with polystyrene and its varieties, suitable for any foam materials. But using them is quite inconvenient: they are applied to the surface for a long time, while the fixation is not always of high quality, you have to hold the parts for several minutes.
  2. Liquid Nails. These are very convenient compositions to which many masters give the unconditional palm. They are produced in tubes for a construction gun. But when choosing this option, it must be borne in mind that the composition must have an inscription confirming that it can be used with expanded polystyrene products.
  3. Acrylic sealant. Quite an original solution that helps to find a way out when it is not possible to purchase one of the above materials. But in this case, it is very important to choose proven formulations.

Fixation

Now you need to figure out how to properly glue the ceiling plinth with glue. The instruction is as follows:

  • The surface is being prepared. It should be carefully inspected for any irregularities or defects. If there are any, then they are completely eliminated. This is required so that the strips are pressed tightly, and also there is no strong curvature.
  • Marking is in progress, parts are being prepared. It is better not to neglect this procedure, it allows you to perform work more efficiently.
  • Next, proceed to the application of the adhesive. It is most convenient to distribute it in the center of the areas adjacent to the surface.

  • Parts are applied to a given area and pressed. It is important to follow the instructions provided with each adhesive. So, different types of compounds require a different approach: holding, tearing off and new gluing. It is better to strictly adhere to the indicated scheme.

    Advice! It is these parameters that you should pay attention to before buying. They help you understand how to glue the ceiling plinth most quickly.

  • The remaining elements are stacked. Then the fillets are left until they are completely fixed. This time is determined by the composition used. If there are gaps, then they are covered with a sealant. Also, joints are closed, which are not always possible to fit closely.

Eliminating cracks with sealant
  • When a large number of defects have to be corrected, it is better to carry out subsequent staining. It will help hide glaring flaws.

Indeed, the glue helps to significantly reduce the time it takes to work, but it is important to take into account the characteristics of each composition.

Currently, many popular solutions have similar names, but differ by manufacturer. Therefore, it is the manufacturer who is the main indicator of quality.

Correct formation of corner and intermediate joints

It is this procedure that causes the most problems: a little mistake is enough to irrevocably spoil the workpiece. Therefore, it is impossible to talk about how to properly glue the skirting boards to the ceiling, if there is no concept of the formation of joints.

So, there are a number of tips that will help in this situation:

  1. For such work, a miter box is used, which has a set of stencils at different angles. To create a 90-degree angle, you need to trim two parts at 45-degree angles.
  2. The inner corner is obtained if the fillet is placed pressed against the bottom and side of the miter box. In this case, the surface of the part, which will be adjacent to the ceiling, should be located on the lower part of the tool.
  3. To get the left angle vector - the element is located on the same side, and the knife must enter the stencil from right to left. If you need to get the right vector, then everything is done the other way around.
  4. But how to glue the skirting board to the ceiling when you need to get an outer corner? In such a situation, the slice must be directed differently. That is, to get the right vector, you need to position the knife from right to left.

If you don't have a miter box at hand, you can resort to creating a stencil with your own hands. To do this, the baguette is laid on the table, on which two lines are marked corresponding to its width. So, for example, with a fillet width of 80 mm, both lines will be located exactly at this distance. A square is drawn between them, which should have all sides of 80 mm. Diagonals are drawn in it. They will make up an angle of 45 degrees. Now all that remains is to attach the part with the right side and cut it off. This option is bad because the fragments are difficult to capture, any shift can lead to an uneven angle.

Fastening the ceiling plinth is complicated by intermediate joints. There are several guidelines:

  • Plaster and foam baguettes are best laid at right angles, especially when using filler. It should be noted that a thin layer of mortar is applied to the joint of the second (next) element.
  • Trouble can arise if the edges are damaged. Then it is necessary to cut the part so that it is possible to form a complete pattern in two fragments.
  • Polyurethane products need more attention, they work better when the joint is made at an angle. The oblique seam will be less conspicuous.

Indeed, trimming corners is not an easy task that requires concentration and attention. To better understand the whole process, we suggest watching the video below.

Features of gluing on different ceiling surfaces

Difficulties also arise when there is no proper understanding of how to glue baguettes to a ceiling made of different materials. It is a mistake to think that different surfaces need exactly the same approach.

Stretch ceiling

This option is very popular. This is easy to explain, because it is possible very quickly and without much effort to get a flat surface, which can have a different design. It is important to take into account one feature when you need to choose a fillet for such a coating: the side of the part that will face the ceiling remains without adhesive. That is, the fixation is carried out directly to the wall. Therefore, the products must have the following qualities:

  1. Low weight. In this case, foam, polystyrene foam, plastic and some types of polyurethane are suitable. At the same time, we glue the ceiling plinth to compounds that have a quick and reliable fixation.
  2. The side facing the ceiling should be smaller than the side facing the wall.
  3. Additional support points will be needed to set up wooden moldings. These can be: dowels, hidden anchors.

Designers advise choosing PVC products, they are in best harmony with tension structures.

GKL ceilings

How to glue skirting boards to plasterboard surfaces? This is a fairly simple procedure, because the base is almost perfect. A little attention should be paid to the joints of the gypsum boards, because they may contain the remnants of the putty. Any irregularities can be easily removed with sandpaper.

On a note! Any fillets are suitable for such surfaces. But it should be borne in mind that the use of drywall leads to the fact that the size of the room is reduced, especially when mounted on a frame. Therefore, the designers came up with an excellent solution - to place the wider side of the baguettes on the ceiling, which visually enlarges the room.

Plastered ceilings

Such surfaces have their drawbacks. Therefore, before installing the ceiling plinth on a plastered ceiling or wall, their evenness is checked. If the defects are small, then there is no need to fix them. For such a case, you can use fillets with soft edges, which will not create very noticeable irregularities.

Summarizing the above, it becomes very clear that the installation of moldings requires proper attitude. All the talk about how to quickly glue skirting boards to the ceiling, but maintain quality, does not make sense, since this is a guarantee that the desired effect will not be achieved.

All photos from the article

In this article, we will talk about how to independently install a ceiling plinth on a stretch ceiling. The topic of the article is of considerable interest, since many compatriots prefer to install vinyl ceilings, instead of wasting time and money on frequent cosmetic repairs of plastered surfaces.

But, there is one significant problem - the traditional methods of gluing the baguette, used for finishing conventional hard ceilings, are not always suitable for decorating stretch vinyl counterparts. Let's find out how to fix the plinth to the stretch ceiling and what materials can be used for these purposes.

Choosing a baguette for finishing stretch ceilings

Currently, from the impressive assortment of baguettes on the market, the following varieties can be used to decorate a stretch ceiling:

  • products from extruded polystyrene foam - they are lightweight, which greatly simplifies the installation work;
  • polyurethane cornices - are characterized by increased flexibility;
  • plastic (PVC) skirting board - presented on sale in a number of varieties specially made for finishing vinyl ceilings;
  • wooden plinth.

Let's consider the listed categories of finishing materials in more detail.

Products made of expanded polystyrene - dense foam are distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • affordable price;
  • light weight and, as a result, the ability to apply glue only to the wall, which is very important when decorating vinyl ceilings;
  • ease of cutting at the desired angle, both with the help of special devices and with a sharp knife.

Among the shortcomings of the material, we note the fragility, and therefore installation will require special care from you.

Important: For the installation of a polystyrene foam baguette, adhesives containing organic solvents must not be used.
To ensure that the planks are not damaged during installation, the adhesive can be tested on a small piece of styrofoam and monitored for its reaction.

Ceiling skirting boards are an excellent tool that allows you to hide irregularities or imperfections in finishing work along the line of the wall and ceiling connection. That is why, in order to carry out a quality repair, it is so important to know how the installation of the ceiling plinth is carried out.

In practice, you can often find such designations of this decorative element: baguette, cornice, fillet, border. Usually skirting boards are made of polystyrene foam, expanded polystyrene or polyurethane. Installing skirting boards is the finishing touch to your interior design. Let's take a closer look at how to customize ceiling skirting boards.

How to install a ceiling plinth

When choosing this finishing material, you should be guided by the size of the room. The device of the ceiling plinth is such that its width should be larger for wide and high rooms, since in such rooms narrow moldings will dissolve in space. As a result, you can completely ruin the design of the room.

Determining the width of the ceiling plinth

In order to correctly select the size of the plinth in accordance with the dimensions of the room, you must adhere to the following values:

Calculation of materials

It is not difficult to fix the baguette, but if the material is cut incorrectly or damaged, losses can occur. Therefore, the ceiling plinth must be purchased with a margin. This will not increase the cost of repairs too much, since the cost of one skirting board unit is not that high.

Ceiling markings

First, determine if there are any irregularities on the ceiling. If the ceiling-wall line is too curved, then in such places it is better not to glue long sections of the plinth. It is advisable to cut all mounted fillets into pieces of the same length. Believe me, even with a large number of joints, such a composition will look better than a mixture of short and long skirting boards.

When marking the ceiling, try to draw the lines so that they are not visible after attaching the baguette.

Tools and materials

In order to install the skirting board on the ceiling quickly and easily, you should have the following tools:

  • clerical knife or hacksaw for metal;
  • the pencils;
  • roulette;
  • wort;
  • rubber spatula;
  • container for putty;
  • assembly gun.

You also need to have the following materials:

Cutting the skirting board

How do you make a ceiling plinth to fit in the corners of a room? To do this, you need to properly trim such elements.

Cutting the corners of the baguettes is carried out very carefully, since they will need to be exactly docked (in more detail: ""). For this, a miter box is used - a special carpentry tool that allows you to cut corners.

Since most skirting boards have an asymmetrical shape, you should understand how to install the elements correctly. The long side is always attached to the wall and the short side to the ceiling.

If all the corners in the room are even, then the plinth is cut very easily. This is done with a sharp knife and miter box. At the same time, the side that is glued to the ceiling is placed on the bottom of the miter box (in more detail: ""). It is necessary to hold the plinth evenly so that later gaps do not form at the corners.

If the corners in the room are not straight, then you will have to work without a miter box. First, attach one baguette to the wall. Two lines are drawn along its sides along the wall. Now do a similar operation on the adjacent plane. Mark the intersection points on the ceiling and walls, and then transfer them to the baguettes themselves. As a result, you will receive elements with marks, along which the cut is made.

Adjusting ceiling skirting boards

If you want to make everything as simple as possible, that is, without calculating the corners, then you can purchase corner mounts for ceiling moldings. They allow you to insert the edges of elements without having to trim them.

But if you decide to cut the corners yourself, then first practice on small pieces. Cut baguettes at the outer corners, while leaving a few millimeters in reserve. It is much easier to grind out the excess than to redo it all over again if there is a shortage.

Internal corners are putty with acrylic sealant using an assembly gun.

Do-it-yourself ceiling plinth installation

The most common are three ways:

  • gluing to the wall;
  • mechanical fastening;
  • gluing to wallpaper.

Mechanical fastening is used when decorating suspended panels. In this case, a special fastening strip is installed, to which the plastic skirting boards are fixed.

Let's take a look at how to properly install the ceiling plinth by gluing to the wall or wallpaper:

  • first of all, it is necessary to level and prime the ceiling and walls;
  • glue is applied to the inner corners of the skirting board. At the same time, they do it carefully - the glue should not fall out;
  • attach the panel to the place where you plan to install it. Remove the part and let the glue set for a while. After that, the plinth is installed in the intended place. It is not necessary to put pressure on the baguette so as not to damage it;
  • the following elements are smeared with glue along the surfaces touching the wall, ceiling and the previous plinth;
  • when you reach the corner of the room, measure the distance to it and cut the baguette with a miter box;
  • after fixing the ceiling molding around the perimeter of the room, it is necessary to cover all joints, cracks and gaps with putty;
  • if the skirting board is to be colored, then apply paint on it (read: "").

Now let's consider the features of fixing the plinth using a mechanical fastening:

  • for a start, corner elements are fixed;
  • the mounting plate is fixed with self-tapping screws (fixing step from 30 to 50 cm);
  • after that, the ceiling plinth is mounted directly on the structural part.

Which glue to choose

We already know how to fix the ceiling plinth, now let's figure out the choice of glue.

Ceiling skirting boards are made of various materials - wood, plaster, polystyrene and polyurethane. The principle of installation does not depend on this - all the baguettes are fixed in the same way, but a certain type of material requires the use of a certain glue (more:

  • To be able to use polymer adhesives, it is necessary to properly prepare the ceiling and walls. The surfaces must have good adhesion properties. If the walls and ceiling were finished with mixtures of putty and plaster, then they must be primed. If the finish was made with wood or plastic, then all greasy stains must be removed from it.
  • The putty solution is applied to the entire back of the panel so that no voids are formed in the corners when it is applied. Excess mortar should be removed with a finger or a spatula.
  • If you want to hide the wiring behind the ceiling plinth, then first fix it to the ceiling and walls so that the wires do not pull the plinth during installation and, thereby, do not complicate the process.
  • Now you know how to install the ceiling plinth, and therefore you can easily do this work yourself. All that is required of you is a little accuracy and responsibility.

In this article, we have considered only the most common methods of mounting baguettes. Therefore, depending on the type of technology used for finishing the ceiling and walls, the method of installing the skirting boards may also change. But since this material is designed for amateur builders, there is no need to describe more complex methods. We hope that now you know how to make a skirting board for the ceiling.

Such a necessary piece of furniture as a plinth, also called a cornice, galtel, curb, molding, must be installed correctly. How to make a wall / ceiling joint invisible. How to fix a ceiling plinth?

Gluing technology, do-it-yourself installation, fastening features for plastic and foam products, for stretch ceilings, the choice of glue, detailed video tutorials - this is what our article is about.

Installation of the ceiling plinth by gluing

Stage 1. Choosing a product for the ceiling

When choosing a ceiling plinth fixed by gluing, you need to focus on the size of the room.

For your information: The higher the installation room, the larger the area, the more massive the cornice is attached by gluing.

How to properly glue the ceiling plinth with a variety of shapes, sizes

Laying a narrow skirting board in a tall room will not beautify the interior. The fixed adhesive decor item will simply "get lost". A wide ceiling cornice, glued in a low room, will "press", further lowering the ceiling.

Types of products installed by gluing according to the pattern:

  • smooth;
  • "Under the stucco";
  • with longitudinal relief stripes.
Advice: You can follow your tastes, preferences by changing the standard. Choose for mounting the ceiling product that is right for you.

Step 2. Calculation of bonded materials

It is necessary to divide the perimeter of the room by the length of one fastener - usually 2 m. Round the resulting number to an integer value. Add another 1-3 baguettes to the resulting figure, because when fastening by gluing, you can spoil the edging element.

Stage 3. Marking the ceiling for installation

How to mark before gluing:

  1. Inspect the mounting locations for irregularities.
  2. Determine the places of fastening with adhesive, given that it is better not to glue long baguettes into places with large curvatures, since they can break when fastened.
  3. It is necessary to fasten the adhesive skirting boards of the same length. The joint of installed products of equal length looks "more presentable" than fastening long and short ones.

Advice: Sticky marks must be placed so that they “hide” behind the ceiling molding after it has been fastened.

Step 4. Prepare for gluing installation

List of glue installation tools:

  • assembly gun;
  • miter box for cutting at an angle;
  • rubber spatula;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • sharp stationery knife;
  • container for mixing putty.

List of fixing materials:

  • ceiling plinth;
  • corner mount;
  • putty;
  • glue;
  • water-based paint;
  • acrylic sealant;
  • mounting plate.

Step 5. Cutting ceiling fasteners

Cut the corner very carefully using a miter box - a device that allows you to cut the plinth at the required angle.

Important: Observe the principle - the corners are cut first. And then the ceiling product is cut.

Having even 90 ° angles on the ceiling in the fastening points, there will be no problems with cutting. Install the cornice in the miter box and cut it off with a sharp knife at an angle of 45 °. The cornice is laid on the bottom of the miter box with the side attached to the ceiling. When cutting, you need to hold the product evenly, do not allow displacement, otherwise you get an extra gap, which you need to close up when fastening with gluing.

How to glue skirting boards to the ceiling - a mark for cutting a corner in front of fasteners

Attention: The sectional skirting board is often asymmetrical. It should be borne in mind that the long side is fixed to the wall, the short side is fixed to the ceiling.

Cutting rules before fastening:

  • at an internal angle, the face of the cornice is cut off;
  • at an external angle, the inner part of the fillet is cut off.

Before gluing the ceiling plinth, it must be cut correctly.

Important: You need to start cutting the ceiling plinth from the outer corners. It is necessary to leave a few millimeters "in reserve". The excess is then sanded with a sandpaper. The resulting gap in the inner corner is sealed with a sealant.

How to cut a right angle?

  1. Install the first baguette against the wall. With a pencil, draw lines to the corner on both sides.
  2. Perform the same operations with the second skirting board.
  3. Mark the intersections for the top and bottom lines.
  4. Transfer these points to baguettes.
  5. On each cornice, two marks were obtained through which a cut was required.

Do-it-yourself plinth installation - fitting before fixing

Advice: If you are lacking in cutting skills, practice trimming. Or purchase a ready-made corner ceiling mount, then the need for accurate cutting of corners before installation will disappear.

Stage 6. Installation of the ceiling plinth

Installation methods:

  1. wallpaper gluing;
  2. wall sticking;
  3. mechanical fasteners.

The first method is installation by gluing on the wallpaper - the most suitable for beginners.

How to install / glue - Moment Installation for ceiling skirting boards

Advantages of anchoring:

  • easy replacement with a new ceiling plinth instead of the glued old one;
  • it is easier to adjust the gaps before gluing;
  • aesthetics - the "integrity" of the wall / skirting installation.

What else is the plinth for the ceiling attached to? A finishing putty is used instead of glue.

Cooking process:

  1. The required amount of water is poured into the prepared container - from the instructions for the putty.
  2. Pour the required amount of dry mixture.
  3. Beat the adhesive composition with a mixer until a homogeneous mass is obtained.

Next, the glue mixture is taken with a rubber spatula and applied to both edges of the baguette, the ends with a layer of up to 1 cm. Set in place, carefully fasten. First with a spatula, then with a sponge, remove excess glue putty.

How to glue a ceiling plinth video - fastening to a putty:

Advice: If there are strong irregularities on the surfaces for fastening, do not press the product strongly, bending it. It is better to glue the resulting cracks with the same putty.

Mechanical fasteners - 3rd installation method - are used if the suspended ceiling is finished with plastic panels. Ceiling PVC skirting board is installed on the fixing strip.

How to glue a foam ceiling plinth

Installation of the skirting board in the first two installation methods, as the most used:

  1. Align uneven parts of the wall and ceiling.
  2. Apply a primer.
  3. Apply glue - liquid nails - to the inner corners of the installed, glued baguettes. You need to act as carefully as possible so that the glue does not get on the front part.
Advice: What is better to glue? Choose polymer-alcohol glue for installation. It sets quickly, has high adhesion and is waterproof.
  1. Install the ceiling cornice in place. Remove it, leave for 2-3 minutes for the glue to set. Mount, pressing lightly, without squeezing, as a dent may appear or the baguette will break.
  2. Lay the subsequent skirting boards by gluing them to the wall, ceiling, and the joint with the previous one.
  3. Cut off the ceiling baguette, reaching the corner, using a miter box.
  4. Glue the gaps, joints, gaps around the entire perimeter of the ceiling with glue putty.
  5. Paint after installation by gluing.

Laying plastic skirting boards

How to attach a skirting board if the false ceiling is made of plastic panels? Answer: Installation with mechanical fastening.

  1. Install corner joints.
  2. Fasten the installation bar with self-tapping screws. The fixing step is 30-50 cm.
  3. Install the outer trim strip on the fixed structure.
Advice: Cutting corners is done in the same way as when installing by gluing ceiling products from other materials.

Fastening the ceiling plinth in the case of a stretch ceiling

Installation of video skirting boards - features of fastening for stretch ceilings:

What type of ceiling products to install if a stretch ceiling is chosen for the interior?

Types of cornices:

  • polyurethane;
  • plastic.

Criterias of choice:

  1. Lightweight materials are installed.
  2. The plane of adhesion to the wall should be wide.
  3. Possibility of using the glue recommended for installation by gluing products under a stretch ceiling - Moment Installation, Europlast or Orac.
  4. No gluing is made to the ceiling, only to the wall.
  5. The ability to leave a gap when gluing to install the LED strip - fixing skirting boards with ceiling lighting.

Installation by gluing polyurethane products

Material advantages:

  • flexibility;
  • not susceptible to destruction when using solvents;
  • moisture resistance;
  • ease of fastening during installation.

Disadvantages:

  • high price;
  • heavy weight - when fastening / gluing, it can sag under its own weight.

The technology of fixing by gluing is no different from the above, only it is taken into account that the installation is carried out only on the wall. Therefore, it is worth choosing wide moldings with a large plane for gluing.

Advice: If the wall is not covered with wallpaper, then it is recommended to walk over the plaster in the place of attachment with a brush and primer. It will increase the strength of the installation, strengthen the plaster.

Fastening by gluing plastic baguettes

It is carried out according to the installation steps given above.

Advice: The surface of the stretch fabric should be protected before installing the product. It is more convenient to use polyethylene film. It is easy to secure and then easy to remove.
