How to clean a coconut fiber mattress. How to wash a children's mattress at home

Coconut mattresses, due to their rigidity, belong to orthopedic products, which means they are suitable not only for people with a sore back, but also for those who take care of a healthy posture in advance. That is why dense coir mattresses are recommended for the smallest children, who are just developing the correct curvature of the spine.

How to choose a coconut mattress?

The simplest and cheap option- thick mat made of coconut fiber (the thickness of the slab should start from at least 3 centimeters). Thinner options serve as an interlayer in combined models.

Signs of a quality filler:

  • mature fibers are dark brown;
  • the coir has been treated with latex (there are small white clots on the fibers);
  • there is no unpleasant synthetic odor.

Coconut fiber like other dried natural material, fragile enough and will crumble under pressure. So they pass special impregnation latex or stitched (the second method is considered less practical).

A single layer of coconut fiber board has a high degree of rigidity and may not be suitable for everyone (unless your doctor has recommended this option to you). Such a mattress is usually taken by babies for a safe sleep and correct formation posture or adults for preventive treatment of the spine. An orthopedic pillow would be a good addition.

Softer products contain one or more coir interlayers in combination with other types of filler. A clever combination modern materials gives a mattress at the exit that is well ventilated, provides anatomically correct support and gives real rest.

What is a coconut innerspring mattress? It is also a multi-layer product, where a high-quality spring block is used, which correctly distributes the load and helps the body to relax during sleep. The more layers of coconut fiber, the harder the mattress will be (three layers are hard for thin people, but perfect for those who are curvy).

Spring mattresses, which can also be purchased from the Matrason online store, are classified as soft or medium firm.

How to disinfect a coconut fiber mattress?

Dry coir can only be cleaned dry. The mattress must be regularly vacuumed, ventilated (preferably in the sun), turned over in order to avoid punching.

You can wash the cover in an ordinary typewriter, choosing the mode for the type of fabric. When buying, pay attention to the length of the zipper - the longer it is, the easier it is to remove the cover. The zipper on one (end) side of the product is considered demonstration - so that the buyer can personally assess the quality of the filler.

Coconut mattresses are often bought for newborn babies, but here it is difficult to protect the crib from leaks. And let the moisture quickly pass through the fibers - over time, the smell will still appear. A small one-piece block of coir can be washed in the bathroom with soapy water, put on a slightly damp cover and dry the product in a straightened state. It should be noted that this is an extreme measure of disinfection of coconut fiber, which can damage or deform the product, therefore, in order to avoid moisture penetration, it is better to use high-quality mattress toppers.

Cleaning of multi-layer orthopedic mattresses is carried out only by specialists in dry cleaners using different detergents for different types mattresses and a very fast drying process so that the filling does not deform. Small dirt can be cleaned at home using soapy water and a soft sponge. When soaking old stains, try to keep the moisture as low as possible - the filler can deform, and metal elements- rust. Dry the mattress with a hairdryer if necessary.

Baby mattresses easily absorb odors, especially when the baby is checking out at night.

Dirt builds up on the surface. After cleaning the cover and airing the product, the unpleasant odor persists, because urine gradually permeates the inner layers of the mattress.

Children's products cannot be dry-cleaned, otherwise allergic attacks on the components of chemical reagents cannot be avoided. Manufacturers of children's mattresses indicate on the labels that the products cannot be washed. Then how to wash children's mattress?

There are special detergents for washing mattresses. They are intended for superficial care of products with coconut filling.

Removable cover is washed in an automatic machine in the classic way... Non-removable covers, for example, in wadded children's mattresses, are treated with specialized detergents for caring for mattresses by hand at home.

If you have a protective cover over the mattress, you can use a carpet cleaner for cleaning, or you can use a special product from the pet store to remove odors. Also suitable baby soap for washing and baby powders.

Wadded mattress

  • Collect half a bath of water and add half a pack of baby washing powder... For washing the mattress, you can choose powders with a pleasant aroma.
  • The layer is dipped into the bath and allowed to soak for 5-10 minutes, then washed gently by hand. Children's mattress with coconut filling may also contain buckwheat husk... Such layers should not be rubbed, otherwise the husk will pop out of its own pockets.
  • Rinse out the mattress in home bathrooms with big amount water thoroughly until the water is clear.

This washing method eliminates unpleasant odors including urine.

The material cannot be squeezed out in a centrifuge. It is enough to squeeze the water out a little with your hands and lay the layers to dry on a special hanger for drying. Products must not be overdried, otherwise problems may arise with the assembly of layers.

Semi-dry layers are collected in the reverse order, put on a cover. Then let the mattress dry thoroughly in the assembled state, turning it over to the other side as it dries.

Sleep is of great importance to a person. Therefore, comfort, cleanliness, and the convenience of the bed and mattress are so important. Sooner or later, every housewife is faced with the question: how to clean the mattress at home. No matter how high-quality the fabric for the mattress is, this is not a guarantee that sooner or later you will not have to face stains on the mattress. In this matter, the most a good option- mattress topper. If the mattress is stained, the mattress topper can be removed and thrown into washing machine... However, there are times when the mattress topper does not help either. Then - we read our advice, and we begin to act.

Modern mattresses are of two types: spring and springless. They have fillers such as:

  1. Latex... Produced on the basis of rubber (Hevea juice). A big plus of such a filler is elasticity and crease resistance.
  2. Artificial latex... It is much tougher than natural. Great advantage filler - affordable price.
  3. Polyurethane foam... Hypoallergenic filler, durable and elastic.
  4. Coconut coir... Latex is added to mattresses of domestic production, the ratio is 70% / 30%. Natural filler has such advantages as: good ventilation, good heat transfer, long service life, hypoallergenic, does not absorb odors. The disadvantages include the high price for this filler.
  5. Cotton wool... Hygroscopic, natural filler. Wadded mattresses with such content are of low price.
  6. Cotton-fiber. Natural material made of pressed white cotton. Comfortable, well ventilated, lush and resilient.
  7. Down synthetic (holofiber)... Modern artificial filler. Hypoallergenic, good ventilation due to the tubular structure of the fibers, lush and inexpensive.

Care rules

Each mattress has its own proven care rules. Let's start with the most common - cotton mattress.

Wadded mattress

A wadded mattress is bought more often because of the natural filler, and the low price.

  • Avoid knocking down the cotton filler; try to fold rather than bend the mattress.
  • Air out once a month.
  • Turn over from time to time so that there are no dents.
  • Vacuum at least once a week.
  • Cleaning the mattress as it gets dirty using a shampoo upholstered furniture, or just a lather.

Coconut mattress

The practical and firm coconut fiber mattress is well suited for small children, especially newborns. This mattress is good for the child's spine, the fiber is hypoallergenic.

  • Dry cleaning with a vacuum cleaner is recommended.
  • This mattress requires a removable cover so it is easier to care for.
  • Requires frequent ventilation, and shifting.
  • Do not let children jump on such a mattress, otherwise pits and dents will appear.
  • It is impossible to dry, leaning against the heater, it is better to use a hairdryer or iron.

Everyone knows that the best and most beneficial for the spine are orthopedic mattresses. With that condition, if it is correctly selected according to the degree of rigidity. For example, it is better for a child to buy a hard mattress, because the child's spine has not yet formed. For an elderly person, a soft mattress is more suitable.

  • Do not bend under any circumstances! This is especially true for spring mattresses, or models with coconut coir filling. Springs can loose their shape and the coconut filler can burst.
  • Can't be knocked out. How to clean an orthopedic mattress? Only dry cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, and removing stains - this is described below.
  • Do not let children jump on this mattress if you want the product to last longer.
Use a mattress topper to protect against dirt and dust.

We clean the mattress from stains

It's no secret that fresh stains are removed much easier and faster than old and dried ones. A cleaning steam generator, or a vacuum cleaner with an aquafilter, helps to cope well with dirt and stains on the mattress. If there is no such technique, then before cleaning the mattress from stains, go over it with an ordinary vacuum cleaner to remove dust, crumbs, dust mites. This is especially true before cleaning a children's mattress, because it is the dust, as you know, that provokes allergies in children.

Blood stains

It is most effective to remove blood stains as soon as they are absorbed into the fabric. There are several ways to deal with blood stains.

  • Cold water is sufficient to remove fresh blood stains. It is enough to wet a cotton pad or cotton cloth in cold water and blot the stain by changing the water.
  • Hydrogen peroxide is good for removing blood stains. Use a weak 3% peroxide solution. We breed 1 table. a spoonful of peroxide in a glass of water, put a few cotton pads, wring it out a little, and put it on the stain. Leave it for 5-10 minutes, then change it. Repeat several times, at the end blot with a dry napkin.
  • For old blood stains, use a paste: mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide, salt, and starch. Apply on the stain and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then we remove the paste with a damp cloth. At the end, we blot this place with a dry cloth.

Cleaning mattresses from urine stains is not an easy task, as it is also complicated by the presence of smell. This is especially true for orthopedic mattresses.

  • A fresh urine stain will help remove the baking soda. To do this, fill the stain with soda and leave it for 1-2 hours. The smell, if it remains, remove it with a cotton swab with vinegar. We blot with a dry napkin, then dry with a hairdryer or vacuum cleaner.
  • Removes ugly stains from children's mattresses boric acid(borax). Dropping a drop of water on the powder - apply the gruel to the stain, rubbing it into the fabric. We leave for 15 minutes. Remove the rest of the powder with a vacuum cleaner.
  • You can use alcohol to remove these stains. This will help remove stains and disinfect the mattress. Blot the stain with a cotton pad dipped in alcohol or vodka. Do not wet it too much, otherwise you will have to dry the mattress for a long time. We process the stain until it disappears.
  • We slightly moisten the spot area with a cotton swab, add coarse salt, leave for 1-2 hours. The salt will absorb all the urine. We collect the salt with a vacuum cleaner. Then treat the rest of the stain with hydrogen peroxide - a cotton pad. The spot area will foam a little. This is fine. After the formation of foam stops, wipe it off with a dry cloth.

Remaining spots

You can remove other stains if you know that:

  1. Coffee stains are removed with gruel from salt and water. Leave for 30 minutes, then remove the salt and dry.
From red wine, berries, or juices. Cover with baking soda or salt. Leave for 20-30 minutes, remove with a vacuum cleaner, wash with foam (for example, shaving foam).
  2. Greasy stains. If they are fresh, cover with starch, salt, or talcum powder. After 20 minutes, clean off the powder and add 1 more time.
  3. Beer or tea stains. Soak a cotton ball in 9% vinegar and wipe off the stains.
  4. Lipstick marks are washed off with alcohol.
  5. Chewing gum or patch. Put ice on the stained area, and then scrape it off with a blunt knife. Wipe with a cotton pad with alcohol.

If you take proper care of the mattress, it will serve you for a long time.

The video shows a story about how to care for a mattress, and how to remove stains from a mattress.

Parental care for a newborn baby comes down to creating ideal conditions for rest, sleep and play of the child. When we strive to give our baby only the best, we often make some mistakes. For example, some parents believe that their child should sleep on a soft mattress to be more comfortable. In fact, this is one of typical mistakes... And the most suitable for a child is a coconut mattress.

When choosing a mattress for a child, we must pay Special attention materials. All baby accessories must be safe and hypoallergenic. Having bought a cheap mattress filled with polyurethane foam (foam rubber), we put the baby in serious danger. In this review, we will take a look at all the features of coconut mattresses and explore their advantages and disadvantages.

Coconut mattresses get this name because of their filler, which is natural coconut fiber. It is actually made from the most common coconuts. The manufacturing technology is quite simple - ripe nuts are collected, soaked in sea water and sent for processing. Their insides are used for confectionery purposes, and the outer drags are combed out and dried.

Coconut coir is made from coconut fibers - this is a thread from which pillows, mattresses and other products are later made. But only thin and short fibers are suitable for this. After that, the coira goes to further processing, since it is rarely used in its pure form. The manufacturer now faces two challenges:

  • Give the coir the desired shape;
  • Give it strength and elasticity.

Initially, coira is a small tangled ball of short threads. In production, they are straightened, processed with natural latex and formed into slabs and blocks.

Speaking of latex, it should be noted that there are two types of coir:

  • Latex Coir;
  • Needle-punched coir.

And both types are quite actively used in the production of children's mattresses.

Properties of latex coir

Latex coir is made by impregnating the original fibers with natural latex. Coconut fiber itself has antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. After being treated with latex, the coir becomes more elastic and resilient. At the same time, it gains resistance to stress. As a final result, manufacturers receive safe and durable coconut slabs, which are sent to the manufacture of mattresses and other products.

Latex coir has excellent antibacterial properties and is breathable. In addition, coconut fiber does not absorb moisture - it quickly evaporates and does not stay in the tissues. And this is very good, because in a humid environment the bacteria receive all the conditions for rapid reproduction.

Do not be alarmed by the strange rubbery smell emanating from a mattress with latex coir - this is how natural latex smells, and the smell itself will disappear within a few days after opening the mattress package.

Needle Punched Coir Properties

Needle Punched Coir is not a complete coconut fiber. In the process of its production, short coconut fibers seem to be nailed to the fabric base. The material turns out to be quite hard and dense, but not resistant to stress - soon squeezed places appear on mattresses made of such material, the coir begins to crumble. A few years later, it completely collapses, as a result of which mattresses become uncomfortable and even hazardous to health.

Pros and cons of a coconut mattress for a newborn

We learned how to make coconut filler for baby mattresses. Now you need to talk about the merits and demerits of this material... Let's start, as usual, with the advantages - there are much more of them than the disadvantages.

Naturalness

The first advantage is full naturalness of coconut coir... Both the fiber itself and the latex used to process it are derived from plant materials. Therefore, we have at our disposal environmentally friendly mattresses, made literally by nature itself - coconut coir is an ideal material for children's mattresses in a crib. In addition, the parents of the baby are advised to purchase a coconut mattress for newborns in the stroller, since the child spends a lot of time in it.

No decay

Coconut filler does not rot. Moreover, it is not subject to decay even when wet - coconut fiber, due to the content of lignin in it, which is a natural polymer. Even if you wet the coconut fiber with water and keep it in this state for several days, then nothing will happen to it - soon the moisture will evaporate, and we will get a mattress suitable for further use.

Hypoallergenic

Coconut filler is hypoallergenic. It does not cause allergies, does not accumulate unpleasant odors, and harmful microorganisms, for example, bed mites... In addition, coconut fiber has good heat transfer properties and is well ventilated.

Orthopedic properties

The orthopedic properties of this coconut fiber should also be noted. Children's coconut mattresses are recommended for all children - such mattresses support the back well and create conditions for the correct development of the spine. A rigid base makes sleep healthier and more sound. In addition, these mattresses are recommended for children and adults with spinal diseases - you need to consult a specialist about this.

disadvantages

Now let's talk about the shortcomings - there are not so many of them, which once again confirms the excellent properties of this material. In fact, the only downside to latex coconut coir is its high cost... And this is quite understandable, given the laboriousness of its production - it takes up to several months for soaking alone. As for cheap coconut mattresses, they are made either from pressed (needle-punched) coir or from unripe coconut fibers - they have a light shade.

Don't Buy Cheap Coconut Mattresses As They Are The Same good characteristics and quickly deteriorate. Pay attention to the products of famous manufacturers.

Sleeping on a new mattress is a pleasure. The only pity is that it remains new for a very short time. Especially if there are children in the house. However, there are many ways to “quickly ruin a new mattress” - from breakfast in bed to “gifts” for pets.

As you know, a mattress is a voluminous thing, and you can't put it in a washing machine.

How to be?

We clean different types of mattresses - what to consider?

Self-cleaning of the mattress can lead to the fact that the product will be irreparable and hopelessly spoiled, therefore, proceeding to eliminate traces of breakfast or other troubles from the mattress, look at the label and consider the type of mattress and its properties.

  • Cotton. The filling of this mattress is cotton wool, the material of the cover is coarse calico and teak, or polycotone / polyester. Such a product is inexpensive, it does not cause problems with transportation, and it does not take up much space. This mattress requires mandatory monthly ventilation. Also, it should be turned over twice a month, vacuumed once a week and, of course, stains removed with special means. You will not spoil such a mattress with too much water, but the cotton wool will dry for an extremely long time even on the balcony. Therefore, water - to a minimum!
  • Coconut. Here the filling is made from coconut coir material. Cleaning should be extremely dry (with a vacuum cleaner), airing and turning over is mandatory, and you can only wash the cover and on a gentle mode.
  • In this version, there is a spring block (there are also springless models), and the filling is made from coconut fiber, latex and polyurethane. It is not recommended to wet the mattress - we regularly ventilate it, clean it with a vacuum cleaner, turn it over once every 2-3 months, we eliminate stains with the help of special means.

Features of care - what you need to know?

  • Use a mattress topper! With its help, you will solve half of the problems and significantly extend the life of the product. Still, washing a mattress topper is much easier than cleaning the mattress itself, and even more so changing the filler.
  • Ventilate regularly! That is, take off your linen once a month, open the windows wide open and place the mattress so that it is ventilated on both sides.
  • Turn it over once every 2-3 months according to the "figure of eight" scheme - changing the bottom and top, legs and head.
  • Vacuum once a week. At high power and with a furniture attachment. Even if the bed is constantly made and covered with a blanket. Dust particles, hair, small debris still fall on the mattress.
  • Try to remove stains from the mattress IMMEDIATELY when they appear. This will greatly facilitate your work.
  • Do not try to cover stains with soapy water or any other product. Wetting of the filler leads to damage to the product, and the spring blocks rust.
  • Dry clean the product periodically - knock out dust, use a vacuum cleaner with attachments.

11 ways to remove blood or urine stains from your mattress

Dust accumulations can be removed with normal dry cleaning.

And what to do with the stains left after the child's sleep, or with blood stains?

  • We use textile stain removers to protect the mattress from decay and damage to the fabric. For example, Vanish, Dr. Beckmann, Amway, Loc wet wipes, Unimax Ultra, Antipyatin, etc. Means are universal and narrowly targeted. They also differ in shape - in the form of a spray, liquid or, for example, a pencil.
  • Preparing the mixture: 1 tablespoon toothpaste / toothpaste, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup cornstarch. Apply the substance evenly to the stain, wait for it to dry, scrape and vacuum. If a trace remains, we repeat.
  • Moisten the stained area a little (do not wet, but moisten!), pour salt on top, remove it after 2-3 hours with a vacuum cleaner. Next, we blot the stain with hydrogen peroxide (on a cotton / disc) and, as soon as the foam stops forming, wipe it with a dry cloth.
  • Take baking soda, white meat softener, and a little water ... Mix until a thick paste, apply to the stain. After 20 minutes, blot with a clean, damp sponge, remove the residues.
  • Dissolve h / l of ammonia in 0.5 l of water. We moisten a cotton pad, apply to the stain. If there is no effect after drying, we use a more concentrated solution.
  • We make a thick mixture of water and starch. We apply on desired site, waiting for drying. After - remove with a brush. Perfectly removes blood stains.
  • We heat glycerin in warm water , put on a cotton pad, wipe the desired area. Next, remove the trail with ammonia.
  • Spray glass cleaner on the stain , rub intensively with a sponge / brush, then use ammonia on a cotton pad (solution).
  • Dissolve aspirin in water (approx. - 1 liter - 1 tablet), moisten the cotton / disc, wipe the stain.
  • Mix soda with water (1/2 to 1), moisten a clean cloth with a solution, leave on the spot for 2 hours. Next, remove the remaining soda and dry.

Getting rid of the stain is only half the battle. Is it really possible to remove the unpleasant odor from the mattress on your own?

There are options!

Both old and proven, and modern ...

  • Children's washing powder. Do not dilute - immediately pour on the stain and rub with a dry sponge or brush. We leave it for a couple of hours, then we vacuum it.
  • Iodine. A product that quickly removes urine odor. True, it is not recommended to use it on light-colored fabrics. For 1 liter of water - 20 drops. We apply the solution on a cotton wool / disc, after which we wipe the area.
  • Laundry soap. Option for lingering urine odor. Moisten the area, rub it well with soap, wait 20 minutes. Next, we moisten the cloth in a solution of vinegar (approx. - 1 tbsp / l per 1 liter of water), wash off the soap, wipe it with a clean damp cloth, dry it with napkins and an iron through the cloth.
  • Ammonia. An excellent tool. We wet the stain, wait half an hour, then remove it with soda.
