Garage doors we prepare the drawings ourselves and the order of work. We make garage doors on our own: the subtleties of organizing work

Buying a good-quality garage structure in our time is not a cheap pleasure. It is cheaper to make a garage door yourself, but certain knowledge and skills are required. It is also advisable to have welding skills. Therefore, how to make a garage door with your own hands is a question that needs to be thoroughly understood. But then it will be possible to begin to complete the task.

Near a private house

Most users choose them for their compact size.

Advantages: convenience, burglary protection, universal use. Disadvantages: high cost, folding structures are subject to damage.

Swing gates

On a suburban area

Sliding gates

Rollback option

Up and over gates

These are the most practical and convenient vertical structures. When opened, the sheet of metal rises up and lies horizontally in the form of a visor. The design of such a mechanism is simple. The canvas is attached to the frame and moves around an axis, changing its horizontal position to a vertical one. Folding gates convenient to use.

Lifting structure drawing

Advantages: resistance to corrosion and burglary, do not require additional space.

Comparison of characteristics

Based on the indicators in the table, we can say that the choice is only up to the buyer. It all depends on cost and reliability. For example, swing and sectional models are best placed in home garage, but they are not suitable for garage cooperatives, as they have a low degree of reliability.

Up-and-over garage doors are suitable for any building, but they main drawback- high price. Due to their low price, swing gates are suitable for a private garage. If necessary, they can be insulated, automated and reinforced with an additional sheet of metal. In addition, it is easy to weld garage doors at home.

Frame structure diagram

The frame is made of a metal corner, which is welded around the entire perimeter of the doorway. This is how the slope is finished inside and outside. The inner and outer corners are welded together with metal strips in several places. You should get a frame frame.

After the frame is ready, collapsible hinges are welded on the sides. The lower part must be connected with an outer corner, and the upper part with the frame frame. This design is also suitable for a garage made of corrugated sheets.

You can learn more about making a metal frame from the video below.

Insulation

DIY metal garage doors require insulation.

The following materials are used as insulation:

  • Styrofoam;
  • penoizol;
  • expanded polystyrene.

Installation drawing

The foam is stuffed onto a pre-prepared frame made of timber, screwed to the inside of the metal. The frame is connected to the metal base with self-tapping screws using metal corners. Polystyrene foam is attached liquid nails directly to the sheathing. If there are joints or cracks, they must be sealed with foam.

Penoizol and expanded polystyrene are attached using the same principle to the mounting profile. To begin with, a sheathing is made from a metal profile. The frame is made from a wall profile, the internal lathing is made from a guide.

Installation diagram

Detailed diagrams for using profiles of all types are available on any construction site. Then any of the selected materials is attached to the sheathing with dowels.

It is not advisable to insulate garage doors mineral wool: It may get wet in a damp room.

Sheathing

On top of the insulation structure it is necessary to attach facing material as:

  • wooden lining;
  • plastic lining;

Location on

The edge of the door is sheathed with a special seal, preventing cold air from entering from the street.

When choosing insulating materials, you should not skimp. It is important to find high-quality and durable building materials so that after the winter season you don’t have to redo everything.

There will be swing ones best choice for the garage owner who values high reliability for low price. It is this design that will allow the car enthusiast to have peace of mind about the iron horse left in the garage and save as much as possible at the same time. And what is also important is that such gates are easiest to mount and install yourself.

What do swing gates look like?

The most simple design swing gates for the garage consists of:

  • frames according to the size of the doorway;
  • two doors;
  • loops;
  • fittings - locks, handles, alarm systems and various limiters that hold the gate in the desired position.

Very often they are placed in one of the doors. Also, for ease of use, the gates are equipped with automatic remote control, which allows you to open the doors without leaving the car. Most often, swing garage doors are made of metal - the frame frame is welded from the profile, hinges are welded onto it and door leaf made of steel sheet 3–5 mm thick. If safety is not so important for the car owner, steel sheets are replaced with corrugated sheets, panels or wood.

Over time, doors on swing gates may begin to sag. Most often this happens due to weak loops. Therefore, before purchasing components for garage doors it is necessary to calculate the mass of the assembled sashes and select hinges with a safety margin.

How to make swing gates with your own hands

To make a garage door with your own hands, you will need drawings containing all the necessary information about the location, size of the gate, and places where the hinges and locks are attached. Experience with a welding machine and plumbing skills will come in handy.

Make sure there is enough space in front of the garage for the car when the doors are fully open. When everything is taken into account on paper, prepare the following materials:

  • profile pipe with a cross section of 60x40 mm for the frame of the doorway;
  • corner for making the frame of the doors;
  • steel sheets up to 5 mm thick;
  • loops;
  • all the necessary accessories.

You will also need tools:

If the gate will be equipped with automatic equipment, select a set of equipment in advance and consider the electrical wiring to the installation site.

Take special care to purchase protective equipment – a welder’s mask and suit, safety glasses and a respirator, and gloves.

When working with an angle grinder and a welding machine, there is a high risk of damaging your eyes, so in no case neglect all necessary means protection.

Making a metal frame for a doorway

Since we already have all the necessary drawings, the dimensions for all elements of the garage door must be taken from them and carefully measured with a tape measure before cutting. Having cut off four frame parts with a grinder, they are laid out on flat surface without allowing distortions. The frame is welded at the corners, constantly monitoring the horizontalness of the entire structure and its shape with a level. It must be strictly rectangular. The finished frame is secured to the garage walls with anchor bolts.

We weld the sash frame

The frames for both sashes are made in the same way as the frame of the opening itself, respecting the dimensions and shape of the frame. As work progresses, you should check the conformity of the dimensions of both frames - the inner one should fit into the outer one smoothly, without forming cracks or inconsistencies. For free movement of doors, the optimal gap between the frames should be 5–7 mm. When welding and fitting, wooden inserts of appropriate thickness are inserted between the frames.

To give the entire structure the necessary rigidity, the frame is reinforced with diagonal elements. Typically, the diagonal pieces extend from the top hinge attachment points and come together at the bottom center of the gate.

The door leaf - steel sheets - is welded onto the finished frame. It should be noted that the gaps between the sash frames and the frame must be covered with steel sheets.

If desired, a gate is installed in one of the doors.

Upon completion of welding work on the frame, all seams should be sanded and painted over. In this case, burrs on the seams will not interfere with the free movement of the doors, and the welding points will not rust.

Welding hinges and hanging gate leaves

Standard hinges for hinged gates consist of an upper and lower part. The lower part, on which the pin is located, is welded to the gate frame, and the upper part to the leaves. Since swing garage doors are heavy, they need to be hung with help. At this stage of work you also need high accuracy. From right installed hinges depends on the smooth movement of the valves and the serviceability of the entire structure.

If the assembled sashes are very heavy, it is better to hang them horizontally. In this case, the frame of the opening, after manufacturing, is attached to the walls of the garage last.

Automatic swing gates

The use of automation for swinging garage doors has not surprised anyone for a long time. Available for sale big choice automatic systems and drives capable of making entry and exit from the garage as comfortable as possible. In addition to comfort, an automatic gate drive provides:

  • increased service life of loops;
  • stable load on the supporting frame;
  • smooth operation in all weather conditions.

The higher the gate and the greater the weight of the leaves, the greater the need to equip the gate with automation, especially if the gate is regularly used by women.

Automatic gates are convenient because there is no need to lock them manually. The automation blocks any attempts to open the doors by hand until a signal is received by the control sensor. The disadvantage of this system is the dependence of work on the availability electric current. Without light, the mechanics simply will not work. To solve the problem, an unlocking system is installed. Most often it goes like additional option to the drive kit. An alternative would be to connect the automation to a source backup power– battery or generator.

Currently, two types of drives for automatic swing gates are common - lever and linear. The latter is preferable, as it is designed for the heavy weight of the doors and strong gusts of wind.

Painting and insulation of gates

Before painting work the metal surface should be cleaned grinder. Then the gate is coated with two or three layers of primer and metal paint suitable for external work.

For most car enthusiasts, having insulation in the garage is a necessity so that all car maintenance work is carried out in normal conditions. temperature conditions. In addition, a workshop is often set up in the garage. Polystyrene foam, mineral wool, felt, cork boards, penoizol, and extruded polystyrene are usually used as insulation for swinging garage doors.

After installing the fittings, insulation and painting, the swing garage doors can be considered completely finished.

Making your own garage swing gates - video

Swing gates are the most common in the world, simple and reliable mechanism movable barrier. It is not difficult to weld a gate correctly: the design of two leaves has been proven for hundreds of years. “In-place” technology is traditional for fencing of this type.

To weld a garage door correctly, you need to choose its type, type, and size before starting construction.

The dimensions of the garage enclosing structure are calculated based on the type of vehicle. The dimensions of the existing car (they are measured along the edge of the mirrors) are increased to the dimensions expected in the future. To the resulting value add:

  • 0.6 m – if the car moves straight when entering the garage;
  • 1.0 m – if entering from a turn.

Approximately for passenger cars, the width of the alignment is 2.4-2.5 m; for SUVs, it is necessary to provide a width of 3-3.5 m. The height of the opening is designed within the range: 2-2.2 m.

Pre-design work

The problem that needs to be solved before welding the gate with your own hands is determining its type. If the intended manufacturing method is homemade, the only alternative to hinged ones can be sliding gates. It is better to order other types of fencing – roller, sectional, folding – from a specialized company.

The design of outward-opening swing gates consists of two main components:

  • embedded supporting box
  • directly to the valves;
  • smaller assembly units - hinges, handles, locks.

At this stage you need to decide on the materials. The design will be lighter if the doors are made from corrugated sheets - rolled metal sheets with a thickness of 0.35 to 1.2 mm. The frame in this case is assembled from wooden beams or metal profiles. The connections are made detachable - with self-tapping screws or self-tapping screws. Profile gates can be insulated with polystyrene foam or mineral wool and sheathed on the inside finishing material. The disadvantage of such a fence is obvious: it can be easily disassembled into parts using a wrench. There is one way to eliminate the possibility of such an opening: weld the garage door

If the garage is located outside the area of constant surveillance, experts recommend welding metal gates. For this purpose you need to choose:

  • for moving blades, steel sheet with a cross section of 2-3 mm;
  • for the frame - profile pipe 20x40 mm.

The box is made from a corner measuring at least 63 mm; They also use the 70th or 75th corner.

Metal parts of this thickness can be connected by welding, forming a single one-piece structure.

Selection of frame design and drawing

The box consists of two frames connected by jumpers. The design of the frame (shown in the photo) resembles a ring with concave edges, which covers the ends of the walls along the entire perimeter of the frame along the ribs. The first frame - the external frame - is made from a corner, directed by the shelves into the garage. When assembling the second frame - the internal frame, the corner is laid with shelves outward.

The box parts must be butt welded. In this case, the corner flanges at the junction are cut at an angle of 45°. The shorter length of each corner should be equal to the distance between opposite edges of the wall minus 10mm. This centimeter is a technological gap (2x5 mm), it is necessary for ease of installation of the frame. Thus, the internal width of the garage opening inside the box will be equal to:

  • The width between the ends of the walls is 10 mm (double the technological gap) - 16 mm (double the thickness of the corner shelves).

  • Frame dimensions from profile pipes The width should be 20 mm less than the openings between the frames (quadruple the gap): it is necessary for the free movement of the sashes.
  • The length of the vertical guide is equal to this distance; the lengths of the horizontal ribs are reduced by 80 mm: by two thicknesses of the vertical pipes.

The design of the stiffeners should include:

  • external frame;
  • transverse, longitudinal, and, if necessary, diagonal elements.

Assembly and welding

Watch the video on how to weld gates.

The box is laid out on the technological table. It consists of four support platforms installed in the corners of the structure at the same height. You can use brick or cinder block as platforms. Before starting welding:

  • The mating corners are laid out taking into account the level and equality of the diagonals:
  • fastened with clamps;
  • “grab” with dots;
  • joints are corrected;
  • weld;
  • measure the diagonals.

The difference between them should not exceed 5 mm.

The operation is repeated for the second box. Using the method shown in the video, the frame of the valves is welded from profile pipes.

The fastening of the panels to the frame made of profile pipes is carried out by welding every 100 - 150 mm. The right blade is made wider than the left one by 20-50 mm.

The hinges are fastened in the following way: the sashes are inserted into the opening and adjusted in height and level. The movement step is 5 mm. This is enough to correct a minor technological error: the free movement of the blade vertically in accordance with the drawing is 20 mm.

Garage hinges are welded in this way: the lower half (with the support rod) is welded to the frame, and the upper half is welded to the movable leaf. After the final adjustment of the enclosing mechanism, the fastening of the hinges is reinforced with steel plates, which are scalded around the perimeter. The box is attached to the slopes with metal rods with a length of 150 mm.

Alternative types of fencing

Installing sliding gates made of corrugated pipe with a profile leaf will require additional work:

  • construction;
  • locksmith;
  • assembly;
  • electrical installations.

Construction work includes, firstly, the construction support beam. To do this, a foundation is poured in front of the garage along the entire width of the opening, into which a 200 mm embedded channel is mounted with the shelves down. Secondly, at end walls reinforcing columns are being erected on which the structure will rest.

Gates made of corrugated sheets are hung on mortgages made of corrugated pipes (as in the photo), which are built into the columns. Carriages with rollers are attached to the bottom of the sashes - at one edge and an end roller - at the other. The movement is carried out along the supporting channel. An electric motor is used as a drive. IN electrical diagram a shutdown relay is provided.

Final operations

All metal surfaces must be cleaned, primed and painted. Finished garage doors can be insulated. Upon completion of the work, it is worth calculating how much it costs to weld the gate if you do the work yourself.

A garage is a mandatory building for a car owner. Those who live outside the city in private houses build garages next to the house or even add one to the house. And for those who live within the boundaries big city, you have to store the car in a garage cooperative away from home. But no matter where the garage is located, the safety of the car in it is ensured by gates, the design of which may differ depending on the preferences of the owner and the capabilities of the room, space and expediency.

The simplest solution would be to buy ready-made gates and install them in place, but you can make garage doors yourself, be sure to take into account all the design features and customize them, as they say, “to suit you.” In this case, you will be absolutely sure of their quality and reliability.

On this moment There are several types of garage doors. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. To install some types of structures, a lot of free space is required inside or in front of the garage.

Lift-and-swivel design

Most types of garage doors have appeared relatively recently. For example, a structure that rises when opened and then goes under the ceiling. In this case, just press a certain button on the control panel. This design is based on a hinged lever mechanism, as well as guides. The main advantage of such gates is that they do not take up free space in front or inside the garage. However, such a design should only be considered if the building is heated.

Swing gates

The most reliable and ancient option is swing garage doors. Similar designs are used everywhere. Often they are equipped not only with garages. After all, such gates work flawlessly even in more severe conditions. A similar structure consists of several doors equipped with hinges, as well as a frame that is installed in the doorway. Such gates close quite tightly. There is no gap left between the sashes. You can make such a design yourself. After all, the mechanism is quite reliable and simple.

Sliding structures

In the first half of the 20th century, sliding gates appeared. The design consists of one leaf, which moves parallel to the front wall to the side. In fact, there may be several such doors. This design has a drawback. Its installation requires a lot of free space in the front wall of the building. That is why sliding structures are installed mainly in industrial or hangar premises.

Up-and-over sectional doors

This species appeared not so long ago. The design is a canvas that consists of sections. When opened, such gates gradually move under the ceiling, refracting as they do so. These gates are based on guides with chain drive and a spring mechanism. The main advantage of the lifting-sectional design is space saving.

Rolling gates

Roller shutter structures are quite rarely used as garage doors, as they do not provide adequate reliability. Such gates are made of aluminum plates, which, when opened, fold into a box placed under the ceiling. It is worth installing such structures only if the garage is located in a protected area and is heated.

Lifting gates are divided into two types:

  • Lifting sectional. The door leaf consists of several parts that are connected to each other by a rigid structure. As they rise, they bend and gather. When lowered, the assembled sections are straightened and leveled to their original (flat) position.

  • Rotary. Unlike the previous type, in this case the main door leaf is not subject to deformation. The principle of their operation is that the sash rises along a curved path. Wherein top part goes slightly deeper inside. The remaining part of the sash rises from the outside.

Installation of garage doors with lifting mechanism In both cases it happens almost identically. And you can do it yourself.

Advantages overhead gates and their disadvantages

Homemade overhead garage doors have a number of undeniable advantages that set them apart from other types of devices. The main advantages are:

  • Space saving. To raise the sash, a space under the ceiling is used, which, as a rule, is never used. Due to this, there is no need to waste useful meters on the ground next to the garage.
  • The doors are a single piece. And this is reliable protection from the entry of strangers.
  • It is possible to insulate the doors. Most often, polystyrene foam is used for this.
  • It is possible to install a mechanism for automatic lifting.
  • Suitable for installing not only single, but also double garages.
  • The external finish can be any, due to which the gate will harmoniously fit into the decoration of the garage and the design of the entire site.

The disadvantages of overhead gates arise from their design.

There are not many of them, but there is no need to write them off. The disadvantages include:

  • The solid leaf of the sash is not subject to partial repair. If damaged, it must be completely replaced.
  • Gate installation is only possible in rectangular openings.
  • Installation requires certain knowledge.
  • The gate rises upward, thereby reducing the height of the opening.
  • Insulation must be taken into account in advance. The fact is that the lifting gate mechanism is designed for a load of a certain magnitude. An additional layer of insulation will entail an increase in the load on the mechanism.

The design of the gate and the principle of its operation

The main structural elements that bear the load are the frame, guides and a mechanism for moving the blade. The gate opens automatically (using remote control) or manual mode.

Levers are attached to the bottom of the sash. At the upper ends there are two more guides along which the rollers move. With the help of these elements, the sash is lifted. To do this, you just need to pull the handle, which is located at the bottom of the canvas. There are no difficulties with this, since springs in an extended state come to the rescue. The sash lifting diagram can be seen in the picture above.

Lifting mechanisms

The lifting mechanism can be of two types:

  • Lever-spring. This is the most popular mechanism among garage owners. It is distinguished by its simplicity of design and reliability. Manufacturing metal gates with a similar mechanism requires precise adjustment of springs, precise installation of guides (along which the rollers will later move).
  • If the sash is heavy, preference is given to a mechanism with a counterweight. In this case, a winch is used. A counterweight is attached to one side, which is connected to the other edge of the sash using a cable.

The choice of a suitable mechanism is made taking into account the specific situation.

Preparatory work

Before making and installing overhead garage doors with your own hands, you need to carry out preparatory work.

The surface of the walls and ceiling must be flat so that the guides can be installed without tilting. Any dust that gets on the rollers or guides can disrupt the operation of the entire mechanism. Therefore, all construction and Finishing work the inside of the garage must be completed. This doesn't apply to gender. This is due to the fact that the frame extends inside by at least 2 centimeters. Therefore, it will be necessary to complete the construction of the floor after the installation of the garage door has been completed.

The opening must be ready for installation of the gate frame. Basic calculations are made using it. Therefore, you need to know its dimensions. The dimensions required for the construction of the gate are described in the drawing of a lifting garage door in the picture below.

Required materials and tools

Depending on the size and chosen gate design, the number necessary materials may change. But at the very simple solution For the manufacture of metal gates you will need:

  • Wooden blocks 120x80 mm for the box;
  • Wooden bars 100x100 mm for the ceiling;
  • Metal pins to secure the structure;
  • Metal corners 35x35x4 mm for making a frame;
  • Metal corners 40x40x4 mm for rails;
  • Channel 80x45 mm;
  • Spring with internal diameter 30 mm;
  • Metal rod with a diameter of 8 mm;
  • Cloth for the sash.

This is a set of necessary materials for the manufacture of gates with manual lifting mode. If desired, you can purchase a drive to automate this process. The list of required materials may be changed or supplemented. It is difficult to describe everything in detail, down to the screw or screw. After all, every even minor change in the design of the gate will entail a change in this list.

In order to assemble and install overhead garage doors with your own hands, you will need an angle grinder, a drill with drills for metal and wood, and a welding machine. You will also need other tools that every owner has: a hammer, a tape measure, a screwdriver, spanners, level, pencil.

Construction stages

Gates from corrugated pipe are manufactured in accordance with the following steps:

  • Preparation and assembly of the frame;
  • Installation of rollers;
  • Making the sash;
  • Fastening additional elements.

These steps explain how to make your own overhead gate. Next, we will consider each stage in detail.

Frame making

The basis on which the gate will be attached is the frame. It will be on it that it will lie most of loads of the entire structure. The work begins with its manufacture.

The list of required materials includes wooden blocks. This is the simplest and economical option. They can be replaced metal structure, which would be a more reliable option. But everyone makes their own choice. This has virtually no effect on the installation process.

A box is assembled from the bars. To connect them use metal corners or plates. The bottom bar must be recessed into the floor by at least 2 cm. This must be taken into account during the assembly process. When the box is twisted (in the case of metal, welded), it is checked. It is placed in the opening and the position is checked vertically and horizontally. If the frame is positioned correctly, it is secured with anchors (metal pins) with a length of 30 cm. They are taken at the rate of 1 pin per 1 linear meter.

After this, horizontal guides are installed, which are located under the ceiling.

Installation of rollers

Once the frame is installed, you can begin attaching the caster brackets. To prevent the gate from clinging, the upper brackets are attached a little deeper than the lower ones. This can be clearly seen in the picture below. Bolts are used to secure the rails. At this stage it is very important to accurately measure the level.

Clamps are installed at the edges of the rails. They will hold the rollers, thereby keeping the blade in the open (closed) position.

Preparing the sashes

The shield itself, which will serve as a gate leaf, can be made of various materials. But, since it will provide reliable protection for the garage and will be exposed to external climatic influences, it is better to choose more resistant materials. These may be the following options:

  • Frame made of wooden blocks, upholstered on the outside with metal sheets;
  • Use a solid metal sheet;
  • Frame from metal profiles sheathed with metal.

The finishing (outer) layer can be anything, even plastic. To protect against frost, the shield can be covered with a layer of insulation.

To prevent the gate from the corrugated pipe from opening completely each time, you can make a gate in the shield. It will be possible to enter (exit) through it without using the entire structure. Some garage owners also include a window in the sash. If necessary, it is easy to install.

When the shield is ready, it is installed on the guides and the functionality of the mechanism is checked.

Additional items

Gate installation is completed with the installation of additional elements. These include handles, locks, and latches for securing the gate.

Handles are necessary to make opening (closing) the gate more convenient. If they are present, there is no need to cling to the edge of the sash. It is more convenient if the handles are located at the bottom of the shield. And both outside and inside.

If the gate is equipped with a wicket, then you can make a latch inside. This will allow you to protect your property. This technique will allow you to open the door only from the inside. The same solution can be used if the garage is attached to the house and a door connects them.

If the garage is separate and there is no gate, it is necessary to provide locks. If it is not possible to buy special ones, then you can hang regular ones. This is done using bows that are attached to the canvas and outside vertical frame.

The production of metal gates with a lifting mechanism is being completed external finishing designs. They are being processed protective equipment, paint, attach finishing materials.

Automation system

An automatic drive can be installed on overhead garage doors. This will increase prices for the entire structure. But the level of comfort will also increase significantly. There will be no need to open (close) the gate manually. Everything can be done using remote control. At the same time, it is important to choose the type of drive that suits your overhead garage door. Their prices are in the range of 300-800 euros.

Installing the drive won't be much of a problem. The instructions indicate the cutting of the contacts, which will need to be followed. It is difficult to give an example, since each manufacturer has its own connection standards.

Connecting the system automatic opening, lifting gates manufactured and installed on their own will not differ from factory ones. This will make it possible to control it remotely using a remote control.

So, by following a few simple steps, you can get overhead garage doors. In addition to significant savings Money, this will also entail a lot of other benefits. This design saves space. The gate does not require free space in front of the garage as is the case with the swing version. They take up space under the ceiling that is not used in other situations. Independent choice materials for the manufacture of the structure will allow you to do everything in accordance with your views and requirements. Supplementing the device with an automatic drive will increase the level of convenience when using the gate.

Some secrets to protecting garage doors from burglary

Even installation nice castle may not protect your car or protect it from robbery. After all, you can always cut off the hinges with a grinder and simply remove the doors. This is exactly what they did in the turbulent nineties. What to do?

  1. From the inside of the frame of the doors, in the area of the same hinges, we weld a piece of corner to the frame. It should turn out like this: when closing the sash, the corner will fit 1 - 2 cm into the wall (to do this you need to gouge out the brick a little) and cling to the garage frame. Even after cutting off the hinges, attackers will not be able to remove the doors, since they will be firmly attached to the garage frame.
  2. Install a spider lock, the pins of which will fit into the walls, floor and ceiling of the garage. It is desirable that, in addition to the “spider” itself, a locking mechanism is installed that locks the “spider” in the closed state until this mechanism is opened using a unique key.

When protecting your garage from burglary, the main thing is not to overdo it, so that if you lose your keys, there is at least some chance of getting into the garage without resorting to removing the walls.

Making a garage door with your own hands takes approximately 1 – 2 days of work. At the same time, your product will have unique sizes and designs if you want something special.

To manufacture the frame, the following work is carried out:

  • First, 4 sections are cut, the length of which should be approximately 10 cm less than the height of the frame. This is necessary so that the created sashes easily fit into the created frame. Since there will be 2 sashes, it is necessary to make 4 more segments.
  • After this, the segments are laid out on a flat surface. This will allow you to see the shortcomings and make the frame of the sashes more accurately. It is important to ensure that all angles are 90 degrees.
  • At the next stage, the segments are welded. To enhance the structure being created you can weld a horizontal section that will act as a spacer and prevent distortions. It is best to place this element in the middle.
  • Before making a garage door, it is worth accurately calculating the amount of materials used so as not to interrupt work and look for additional details. If a gate is installed in the gate, you need to make an additional frame for it inside one of the leaves. It is also important to strengthen it so that the sash does not become deformed during use.

    Manufacturing of sashes

    After completing the described work, you can begin assembling the sashes. To create them you will need sheet metal thickness of at least 2 mm. All work is carried out in several stages:

  • First, the canvases are cut out from metal sheet. In this case, one canvas should be approximately 2 cm wider than the other.
  • After this, the canvases are welded to a pre-created frame. The top and bottom sheet of metal on one leaf should protrude beyond the frame by about 20 mm; it will always close after the first one.
  • On last stage hinges for metal gates are welded. To strengthen the hinges, you can weld a strip of metal to them. Before installation, you need to check the size of the sashes and determine whether they will get stuck in the opening. If necessary, any irregularities must be corrected prior to installation.
  • Important! Since the sheet of metal is easily deformed during work, it is worth connecting the corners first and then starting welding in the middle.

    Before you make a swing garage door with your own hands, it is worth determining whether the frame is installed correctly. This can be done using building level and plumb line.

    Installation of sashes

    First you need to install the gate frame. Internal and outer frame are connected to each other using metal strips about 4 mm thick. During connection, it is important to check that all elements are positioned correctly. The distance between the metal strips should be about 60 cm.

    In order for the frame to be more securely fixed to the opening, it is worth not only using pins, but also embedding the structure into the wall. It is worth remembering that there must be at least three reinforcing bars along the height of the garage opening. Their length should be about 30 cm.

    After this, the hinges are welded and the sashes are hung. During such work, it is important to check whether all elements are installed correctly and whether the gate opens freely. Installation of garage doors can only be done with an assistant, since hanging cannot be done alone.

    If desired, you can insulate the gate. To do this, just attach the insulation to inside valves If they are created wooden gates, this happens in a similar way, only the insulation is fixed in a frame made of wooden blocks and sheathed with clapboard.

    Garage door protection

    In order for the garage to be reliably protected from penetration, it is necessary to install the hinges in such a way that they cannot be cut with a grinder. You must also follow other recommendations:

  • From the inside of the created frame of the doors, it is worth welding metal corners in the area of the hinges. This must be done in such a way that when the swing gate is closed, the corner fits into the wall. To do this, you need to make a recess in the brick. This must be done so that when removing the hinges, attackers will not be able to remove the sashes.
  • It is also important to install the lock correctly. When closing a garage, the lock pins must engage the walls, floor, and ceiling of the structure. Spider locks are quite reliable as they are difficult to pick and cannot be cut. But it is worth remembering that if you lose the keys, it will be very difficult to open such a garage.
  • Creating a swing garage door can take about two days if the work is done by one person. For a more accurate idea of how the described work is performed, it is worth watching the proposed video:
