Coffee table made of wood and epoxy resin. Methods for making tables out of wood and epoxy resin

In an effort to make the interior design of a house or apartment original and unique, many owners tend to use non-standard solutions and specific materials. An interesting option is to decorate rooms with epoxy resin tables. This substance, related to oligomeric compounds, is distinguished by high technical and operational properties. In this article we will look at the best ideas on how to make an epoxy table and how to construct them.

Manufacturing features

In the manufacture of furniture items, epoxy resins are used not in pure form, but in combination with special hardeners. The consistency of the resulting mixture depends on the proportions of the individual parts.

Decorating tables with epoxy requires coating the wooden base with a pre-prepared compound. Subsequently, when the product hardens, careful polishing is required. The resulting tabletop is characterized by increased wear resistance, as can be seen in the photo of epoxy resin tables.

Well-chosen ratios of components determine the quality of the composition and the manufactured furniture product. If this condition is violated, then the strength may decrease, and the resistance to external factors will not be too high. Typically the selected ratio of resin to hardener is 1: 1 or 1: 2.

In the production of tables and other pieces of furniture in domestic conditions, cold-curing epoxy is used.

However, at the same time, it must meet a number of requirements:

  • low cost of material without loss in technical characteristics, since the costs will be high;
  • low viscosity of the composition without the presence of bubbles after stirring;
  • preservation of volume during curing;
  • the hardening process should be slow, which will create patterns;
  • for visual effects, it is advisable to choose transparent types of resin.

Advantages and disadvantages

If you decide to make a table out of epoxy resin with your own hands, then you need to take into account the main advantages of this material:

  • no serious shrinkage during drying, preservation of shape and color;
  • not susceptibility to deformation and mechanical stress;
  • the ability to create original designer table models;
  • resin compatibility with other decorative elements - coins, stones, shells, rubber, corks, etc .;
  • the possibility of using dyes and paints of the phosphorescent type;
  • moisture resistance and impermeability;
  • resistance to the action of chemical components and detergents.

The main disadvantage of making tables from epoxy is the high cost. Up to several tens of liters of the mixture are spent on the manufacture of one product. You should also consider the possibility of bubbles appearing on the surface of the composition.

Manufacturing technology

To get a quality product, it is important not only to properly dilute the mixture, but also to follow the instructions on how to properly make a table from epoxy resin. First, the surface to be treated is thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt. The wooden surface is primed. Ignoring this requirement leads to the formation of bubbles when the mixture is absorbed by the porous structure of the wood. They will spoil the look of the table.

After that, you can prepare a mixture of resin and hardener in the required proportions. Dyes and decorative components are added to the prepared solution. Then the mixture is covered with a wooden base.

Decorating the table with decorative elements must be thought out in advance. All required parts are laid out on the wood surface before epoxy is poured. Lightweight parts, such as shells, must first be glued to prevent them from rising to the surface of the mixture. The resulting bubbles are removed with a stream of air from the building hair dryer.

The first setting will begin in a quarter of an hour. However, this is not enough to start grinding. Grinding should be done only after complete drying. The product is aged for 7-10 days, after which it can be used.

It is important not to forget to cover the surface with a varnish with protective properties after finishing sanding work. Moreover, it is desirable to do this in several layers. This will prevent even the smallest release of toxic components.

Varieties of products

Many craftsmen are interested in the question of what kind of epoxy table can be made. There are no particular restrictions - it all depends on the imagination. We will consider some options.

Crack simulation

The tabletop and the body of the table will look original if they are decorated with a bark beetle or simulate damage by a fungus. By filling the cracks with epoxy, you will create unique patterns, and you can make holes and crevices yourself.

The cavities can be filled with a brush and a spatula. After hardening, the excess is cleaned with a grinder, since the composition should only be in the cracks. A protective varnish is applied on top of the coating, which will also provide brightness.

Note!

Transparency or monochrome

The workpiece must be cleaned and degreased. Before applying the resin, the wood is primed. This prevents the formation of bubbles. The diluted epoxy is placed in a mold. The desired pigment is added for the color effect. The color combination is provided by several dyes.

The poured countertop is kept for 15-20 minutes, and the bubbles that appear are removed. After two days, the table is ground and polished, and in a week the product will be ready for use.

The use of fillers

First, you should choose the right items as decorative fillers. These can be lids, pebbles, shells. The surface of the workpiece is degreased and, if necessary, treated with paint.

Dry fillers are placed on the workpiece and, if necessary, glued to the surface. Epoxy is poured in one layer, if the parts are small in height - up to 5 mm. In the case of large sizes, in the presence of large grooves, the resin is placed in several layers with a break in application between them for 2 days.

To make a piece of furniture aesthetically attractive, you must follow the rules for pouring the table with epoxy resin:

  • cover the workplace with plastic wrap;
  • limit the possibility of dust entering the workpiece;
  • the presence of water and its penetration into the mixture can damage the countertop;
  • with a large amount of material, the solidification rate is higher;
  • acceleration of curing is possible by increasing the temperature;
  • grinding and polishing the product affects the quality of the table.

Note!

Designer models of tables can be created by simulating natural landscapes on the countertop using epoxy. These can be rivers, seas, lakes.

Photoluminescent paint provides a green glowing effect, and making a geographical map on the tabletop will help to make the interior unusual. It is only important to be careful and attentive in work.

Note!

Quite often, starting repairs in their homes, people want to make the interior unusual and exclusive.

You can diversify your kitchen, living room or dining room with an epoxy table. You can do it yourself, having a drawing, the necessary supplies, tools and free time.

Also, with the help of polymer resin, you can return the former attractiveness to an old product that has lost its aesthetics over many years of operation. Such a piece of furniture will bring special sophistication, originality and bright accents to the room.

Epoxy resin can be classified as an exclusive material. She has mass advantages... The main ones include:

  • naturalness and safety;
  • long service life;
  • exclusive appearance;
  • convenience and ease of use;
  • acceptable cost.

With the help of epoxy resin, people create truly unique masterpieces with interesting textures and textures.

What is polymer resin? It is a two component material consisting of a hardener and resin. It can be used to cover the treated surfaces with an even and transparent layer. There are no cracks, bulges or any other defects on such a surface..

Epoxy coated features include:

  • perfectly flat surfaces;
  • good resistance to mechanical stress;
  • moisture resistance;
  • ease of use and maintenance;
  • resistance to direct sunlight and ultraviolet rays.

Advice... To prevent the release of toxins, the table surface is covered with yacht varnish.

But in addition to the positive qualities, the epoxy resin countertop has and limitations:

  • the appearance of white flakes inside the fill with a sharp drop in temperature;
  • the release of toxins at a very high air temperature;
  • strict adherence to safety measures when preparing work.

Important... When white flakes appear, heat the product to 50 degrees Celsius.

Varieties

According to the varieties, polymer resin countertops are divided into:

  • completely made of epoxy without additional construction;
  • resin coated bases made of wood, chipboard and other materials;
  • combined productsmade from epoxy and other materials.

Each individual option has its own advantages.

Important. Unsupported epoxy worktops are only acceptable for the manufacture of coffee tables. Since such products are not designed for heavy loads.

The products will look very attractive if a composition of dry leaves is made under the coating. You can also add a little multi-colored glitter to the resin to add brightness to the thing.

When restoring an old countertop, paint, varnish and any other materials are removed from its surface. The surface can decorate with stones, coins, you can apply ornaments using a router. Under a transparent layer of resin, these compositions will look extraordinarily beautiful.

Choosing an epoxy resin

Epoxy resin is synthetic polymer... This material is not used in its pure form. It shows its properties only after contact with the hardener.

Depending on the combination of ingredients, you can make a resin:

  • solid;
  • liquid;
  • high-strength;
  • rubbery.

After creating a drawing - a project, you can select a consumable. When choosing a material, the following characteristics should be considered:

  • material should be transparent... Then it will be possible to achieve any visual effect: make a 3D effect, set the backlight, attach any objects;
  • life expectancy. The material you choose should freeze slowly... This will make it possible to form patterns, ornaments and give the product the desired shape;
  • no shrinkage... The material should not lose volume when poured;
  • degree of viscosity. Material low viscosity, good fluidity will fill even the most difficult-to-reach areas and prevent the formation of bubbles inside the product.

How to do it?

Drawing

To make it more convenient for you to make furniture, you should make a drawing in advance. With its presence, you will not make mistakes when working. The drawing should indicate the exact dimensions of the product, the shape of the product, and the design. When choosing these sizes, personal needs and room dimensions are taken into account. When choosing sizes, you can build on both general standards and personal wishes. The main thing is that the product is stable and capable of withstanding loads.

Tools and materials

Before starting the workflow, you must put on:

To make a product with decorative elements, you will need the following materials:

  • plexiglass or plywood formwork;
  • decorative elements;
  • sandpaper for grinding;
  • glue based on epoxy resin.

Of instruments will be required:

  • scales or measuring cups for diluting materials;
  • pliers;
  • building level;
  • plastic spatula;
  • gas burner or construction hair dryer (to remove air when filling).

Manufacturing

You can buy epoxy resin for decorative work in the store in ready-made kits. These kits include a hardener and resin.

Important... It is necessary to prepare the solution according to the manufacturer's instructions, in compliance with all proportions.

To mix the components you will need:

  1. Prepare 2 containers the required size and a stirring stick.
  2. Further measure out the correct amount of resin and pour in a hardener into it.
  3. Thoroughly mix mix until smooth.

Important... If you mix the solution poorly, the mass will harden badly.

After preparing the solution, you can start making the countertop:

  • we place the workpiece strictly horizontally. Otherwise, there will be irregularities and sagging on its surface;
  • the casting mold is cleaned and dried in advance. Moisture must not get on the work surface;
  • it is recommended to work with the material at air temperatures above 22 degrees Celsius. But teach, the higher the temperature, the faster the solution will solidify;
  • if bubbles form inside during pouring, they can be removed with a syringe or cocktail tube.

Solid wood table top

In the manufacture of a single-color countertop with a base, the stage-by-stage work consists in:

  1. Degreasing working surface. The tree is pre-primed with resin, as it absorbs liquid.
  2. Further the mixture is being prepared from epoxy and flooded in the form.
  3. Thereafter, we leave the furniture for 10-15 minutes... If bubbles appear in the process, remove them.
  4. After 2 days grind surface and polish the product.
  5. A week later, after the material has completely hardened, the table is ready for use.

Fill with decor

To make a product with decor, you need to prepare the filler. It can be: coins, stones, bottle caps, colored sand. The workflow proceeds in the following sequence:

Important. The resin is poured in a thin stream at one point. This will prevent the formation of voids in corners and hard-to-reach areas.

Installing the countertop

After making an epoxy countertop, it is necessary for the frame. In order not to drill holes in the poured surface for installing the legs, these places should be outlined in advance and reinforced with small pieces of pipes of the required diameter. After the material has hardened, these pipes are pulled out, and products are installed in their place.

Before starting work, decide on the type and brand of the fill. Try different compositions in combination with your chosen wood and choose the best one.
An important condition for high-quality casting is an even shape with sides and a coating that does not stick to the resin. The installation of the form must be checked with the building level.
In order to prevent dust from settling on the resin during the drying process of each layer, you will need to prepare a cover for the mold, for example, a sheet of plywood.
Wood for pouring must be processed, sanded and covered with wood stain and varnish.
Lay the tree in shape and check its location with a building level. Fix the material securely.
The process of mixing the fill does not tolerate fuss. Use a drill attachment for mixing, repeatedly pour the composition from bucket into bucket so that no unmixed components remain on the walls.
Carefully fill in the first coat of epoxy.
Check the fill thickness with a ruler. The manufacturer's instructions indicate the maximum thickness. If exceeded, the resin may boil or deform during drying.
Air bubbles formed in the process are expelled with a plastic fork or needle.
After the first layer has frozen, the surface is wiped from dust with a cloth with acetone.
Perform the second and subsequent fill layer using the same algorithm.
The last layer is the thinnest, it is applied with a brush.
Once fully cured, the edges of the countertop can be trimmed and sanded.

Important points in working with epoxy

In order for the tabletop to turn out the way you intended, you need to follow certain recommendations during work:

  • epoxy hardens faster in warmth;
  • do not heat the fill from above, it can deform;
  • during curing, limit access to sunlight so that the resin does not turn yellow;
  • keep in mind that the composition is very toxic, take protective measures;
  • when mixing the fill, do not make sweeping and sharp movements so that bubbles do not appear;
  • do not leave the flooded countertop in the cold - it will exfoliate;
  • so that the resin does not release toxins, cover the finished layer with a protective varnish.

The shape and size of the supporting structure are selected taking into account the dimensions and shape of the future countertop.

Attention!If the table will be without a support surface, this item can be skipped.

How to properly prepare a form for filling: sequence of actions

The base of the countertop can be composed of individual elements or be a solid canvas. In the latter case, the filling of the composition will be carried out exclusively in the corners and in the existing openings with the formation of a characteristic pattern. The work is carried out in the following sequence:

Illustration Action Description

Depending on the selected option, a fill shape is formed. Cover the edges of the inner surface of the mold with a thick film so that the frozen composition lags well behind the base of the mold.

We install the prepared formwork on the base. We place decorative elements inside. We degrease all joints along the contour, the tightness of which should be ensured before the start of pouring.
We glue all mating surfaces with glue, carefully controlling the quality of the joint being formed. For this purpose, it is worth using a silicone sealant.

How to prepare epoxy resin for pouring countertops: follow the instructions

To prepare the composition, both components should be mixed. It is very important to observe the proportions recommended by the manufacturer and mix everything thoroughly so that the resin has a suitable consistency. It is worth calculating in advance how much resin is required.

Advice!When using special mixers for preparing the solution, work at low speeds to prevent air bubbles from saturating the resin.

Useful tips for working with epoxy and safety

When making tables from wood and epoxy resin, remember that:

  • in conditions of high humidity, the composition does not harden well. The probability of bubble formation on the surface is significantly increased;
  • the polymerization rate can be increased by increasing the room temperature. Direct heating is not recommended: the formed coating may turn yellow.

Attention!Epoxy resin is toxic, and therefore the filling of the composition should be carried out in a well-ventilated area.

To ensure your own safety, you should also:

  • fill the composition with gloves and special clothing;
  • when sanding the finished surface, perform the work in goggles and respirators;
  • if drops of the composition get on the skin, they should be immediately removed with water and soap or denatured alcohol.

How to care for an epoxy table: helpful tips

In order for the epoxy countertop to retain its presentable appearance and strength characteristics as long as possible, it must be properly looked after. It is advisable to use a dry soft cloth for care. Wool and flannel are preferred. Stubborn dirt can be removed with a damp cloth, and then the surface must be wiped dry. Leftover water droplets can cause stains.

Attention!The use of formulations containing alcohol or acetone is unacceptable.

Avoid dropping heavy objects onto the surface of the liquid glass table. It is better to put hot mugs and plates on a special stand.

Epoxy resin possesses unique properties, due to which it is widely used in various industries. On the basis of epoxy with appropriate additives, various compounds that allow us to produce high-quality, aesthetic and incredibly practical things, from small decorations to floors in an apartment or house. Epoxy resin is also used for pouring countertops and making whole furniture. For coating with a thin layer, apply epoxy varnishes Etal and epoxy paints Etal.

A product made of epoxy resin or coated with epoxy compounds is not afraid of mechanical and chemical damage and looks really impressive, especially when using decoupage technique or something similar to it. The entire manufacturing process will require personal protective equipment and accuracy, but no special tools or special skills are needed. Read more about the fill method later in the article.

Material characteristic

For pouring countertops used two-component epoxy compoundsconsisting of a resin and a hardener, such as a brand Etal (transparent Etal-3D, Etal-Optic, Etal-257Carbon / Light etc.). After hardening, the mixture does not decrease in volume and does not become covered with cracks, it perfectly fills small irregularities. The material is resistant to moisture, abrasion, but when exposed to high temperatures it melts, a sandy shade may appear, like all epoxies.

Specialized epoxy compounds have special additives that improve the properties of the epoxy, such as wear resistance, heat resistance, UV resistance, chemical resistance, impact resistance, etc.

You can yourself complete epoxy resins of different brands with hardeners, additives, dyes.

The most common epoxy resin in the post-Soviet space is epoxy-diane resin ED-20, the main disadvantage of which is the increased viscosity of the substance, which makes it very problematic to remove air bubbles from the mass. After some time, the ED-20 countertop loses its transparency and becomes slightly yellowish, but this is not so important when using dyes. In addition, ED-20 resin from different manufacturers differs in physical and mechanical properties after curing, in particular in fragility, and shade. The hardener selected for the resin polymerization also contributes to the performance. Are actively used hardeners Etal-45M, PEPA... The advantage of ED-20 is its low cost.

Of imported resins, an analogue of ED-20 resin can be called epoxy resin KER 828.But if you need a resin with a low viscosity (like water), transparent and fast curing, then we recommend using resin KER 215from hardener KSA 4303.

Epoxy compounds allow you to create various shapes of products: the thicker the consistency, the lighter - this, for example, when working in epoxy plasticines stamps Etal, and in the manufacture of composite products (fiberglass, carbon fiber), it is necessary to choose impregnating epoxy compounds Etal with low viscosity.

Countertops and furniture can be made entirely of epoxy resin or combined with other materials such as wood, stone.

When a wooden countertop is coated with an epoxy compound, the wood is stabilized: its pores are filled with resin. As a result, the tree becomes invulnerable to ultraviolet radiation, solvents, organic matter.

In addition to operational, epoxy resin also has decorative advantages. With its help, patterns, decorations, imitations are created. For example, you can coat a painting, shells, pebbles, leaves, etc. with a layer of resin. Epoxy resin can be painted beautifully, for example, epoxy tinting pastes Etal... It is possible to obtain a colored transparent or opaque coating, as well as with various stains.

Specialized epoxy compounds are not cheap materials, but if you compare them with their counterparts for surface treatment with increased abrasion, moisture and mechanical damage, the price becomes very reasonable. The price of epoxy potting transparent compounds as of 2019 varies depending on the properties of the composition and packaging in the range from 37.8 to 45 rubles per kilogram, the wholesale price will be lower, about 32-41 rubles / kg. Epoxy varnishes are even cheaper. It is, of course, possible to save money when selecting a separate cheap unmodified resin and hardener, without using special chemical additives. (We advise, nevertheless, to pay special attention to the environmental friendliness of the hardener. Health is more expensive.)

There are several types of countertops made with epoxy compounds:

  1. Made entirely of resin, no support. This type is most often found in the manufacture of coffee or coffee tables, for which significant loads are not planned.

2. Made of wood and epoxy coated as a protective layer. The role of the base can be played by a board made of any material: solid wood, multiplex, paneled surface, fiberboard, chipboard, OSB, etc. Before pouring, such countertops are often decorated (with a print, stencil painting, paper elements, according to the decoupage principle, mosaics, pebbles, flowers, coins, shells - whatever).

3. Combined, when the resin alternates with fragments of another material: wood, stone ...

The base can have any shape (square, rounded), it is important to make the sides of the required height so that after the pouring has solidified, the side surfaces of the tabletop are smooth and even.

Advice! When choosing a material for decorating a countertop, remember that the more embossed the decoration, the thicker the fill layer will have to be made to dry, it will take more time.

Advantages of an epoxy coated worktop:

  1. After drying, the substance does not shrink.
  2. After hardening, the surface becomes perfectly flat, like glass.
  3. Resistant to damage as a result of mechanical stress (dents, chips, cuts).
  4. It is immune to moisture and aggressive household cleaning agents, therefore it does not need a special selection of care methods.
  5. It is not destroyed under the influence of ultraviolet rays.
  6. Looks impressive.
  7. Can be machined: drilling, cutting, grinding, polishing.

Useful Tips

To epoxy countertop, made by hand, turned out to be a real work of art, should be done work requirements and take into account the recommendations of professionals:

1. To make a high-quality fill, you will need to accurately observe the proportions of the components.
Advice! Dosage should be done by weighing on scales.
2. When mixing large volumes of epoxy compound one time, a slight yellowness may appear due to strong heating.
Advice! If colorlessness of a transparent product is required, knead the compound in smaller portions.
3. When mixing components and pouring the worktop, bubbles may form.
Advice! Mix the components of the epoxy compound at a slow speed of the mixer, premixing each component separately and adding the hardener with stirring to the resin. When pouring the compound, it is advisable to first apply an epoxy compound to the surface of the mold with a brush, and then fill it. If bubbles remain in the layer after leveling, go over the tabletop with a burner, the bubbles will come out - but do not linger over one place with the flame to prevent overheating.
4. Resin cures faster and more uniformly at room temperature.
5. To avoid deformation, do not heat the surface from above.
6. When filling in layers, a section of layers can be seen.
Advice! Do not overexpose the product in time, pour the next layer in the state of the previous gelatinized (dried) "to tack". Cover the product during exposure to prevent dust from entering the surface. If the previous layer is already dry, sand the surface and clean it before pouring the next layer of epoxy.
7. After curing, the surface of the worktop is uneven or there are uncured areas or stains - this indicates that the hardener / resin has not been mixed evenly.
Advice! It is necessary to mix the components of the compound thoroughly. To exclude impurities and obtain a uniform distribution of components, pour the mixed composition from one working container into another container, completely cleaning the walls and bottom of the compound, and thoroughly mix the mass again with a thick mixer, spatula or spatula. Try not to bring the tool to the surface of the mass, otherwise there is a high probability of air bubbles being sucked in.
8. The surface of the countertop is unclear.
Advice! Cure the resin in a dry place. Excessive humidity can cause cloudiness. To eliminate it, grind and polish the surface (grain size from 320 to 600, revolutions no more than 1000 with paste and water to exclude surface heating).

9. When pouring into the mold around the perimeter, the edging turned out along the side.
Advice! Cut the edging around, sand and polish the surface. Lubricate the mold surface with wax release agent.
