How to paint the ceiling in an apartment - painting technology

Coating a ceiling with paint is one of the oldest finishing methods used for tens, if not hundreds of years. Despite its considerable age and the emergence of new materials and methods for finishing the ceiling, it is still very popular today. This is due to the ease of applying paint, its relatively low price and versatility. In addition, they have an extensive palette of colors, which makes paints a very useful tool in the hands of a designer.

What is the best way to paint the ceiling? How to do it? The answers to the questions can be found in this article.

Types of paints

  • material;
  • shine;
  • ability to wash.

The materials from which paints can be made will be discussed a little below. As for gloss, coatings are divided into two types on this basis: glossy and matte.

Ceiling covering made with glossy paints, will differ in shine and attractive appearance. But this is acceptable only for perfectly aligned ceilings - glossy paint will make even the slightest irregularities and defects noticeable. And if they are, then it is better to choose a matte paint. It has no gloss and is great for masking ceiling imperfections that you have not been able to get rid of. You can choose an intermediate option - semi-gloss paints, which will give the ceiling coating some shine, but at the same time will not give out its defects and irregularities so much.

With regard to washable, there are obviously two types of paints - washable and non-washable... The choice between them should be based on whether you will wash the ceiling with a sponge, rag and detergent or not. As a rule, washable paints are more expensive, but at the same time they do not "fade" after the very first general cleaning.

Water based paints

The main type of paints used today for interior walls and ceilings are water-based paints, also known as water-dispersible paints. They consist of water, which acts as a solvent, film-forming materials - pigments that give the composition the ability to paint surfaces and special additives that give the paint certain properties.

Water-based paints are a suspension - a mixture in which solid components (base, pigments and additives) are distributed in a liquid (in this case, water) in the form of suspended particles, while they do not dissolve in water and do not mix with it.

After applying such paint to the wall, the water evaporates and a polymer film of a certain color remains. Water-dispersed paints have a number of advantages, due to which they are well suited for interior decoration of an apartment and, in particular, a ceiling.

  1. High adhesion, due to which the paint "adheres" well to the surface of the ceiling without the formation of peeling or swelling.
  2. Extremely fast drying speed - only 1-2 hours.
  3. No unpleasant odors during and after application. Working with water-based paint, you do not risk getting light poisoning, and there is no need to wait until the unpleasant smell disappears from the room.
  4. The coating of such paint is environmentally friendly.
  5. Ease of use - even an unprepared person who has not been involved in painting work before can correctly apply water-based paint to the ceiling.

But this material also has its drawbacks. Firstly, water-dispersed paints are very demanding on temperature - you cannot work with them in cold rooms, and if the room is less than + 5 ° C, then after painting the ceiling will be covered with small cracks when it dries. Secondly, you should not apply water-based paint in rooms with high humidity - it simply will not dry out, because the water in its composition will have nowhere to evaporate. And thirdly, before starting painting work, it is required to very carefully clean the surface, otherwise, under a layer of new paint, the remnants of the old coating and various irregularities in the ceiling will be visible.

All water-based paints are divided into 4 types:

  • acrylic;
  • silicate, silicone;
  • mineral;
  • polyvinyl acetate.

Let's consider all of them in more detail.

Acrylic ceiling paints

In such paints, acrylic resins and various additives are used as the main substance that forms a film on the surface of the ceiling. Acrylic is the most popular among all water-based paints. It can be coated on any surface - concrete, wood, polymers, plaster, steel and glass, while, like all water-based paints, it dries up in a matter of hours and does not exude unpleasant odors and harmful substances.

Another advantage of acrylic paints is durability. Having covered your ceiling with it, you can be sure that it will not fade over time and under the influence of sunlight, that it will not wear out, flake off or crumble. It should be noted that vapor permeable acrylic paints, which is especially important for the ceiling, and they can be used in rooms with high humidity. However, removing such material from the ceiling is difficult, and therefore covering the ceiling with acrylic paint should be "seriously and for a long time." In addition, before applying such a paint, you should take care of protecting the ceiling from mold and bacteria.

Separately, it is worth talking about the "derivative" of acrylic paint, which is called acrylate... In addition to the substances already known to you, latex particles are added to its composition. The result is a very unpretentious and durable finishing material that will not only fit well and firmly on the ceiling, but will also help to mask small cracks, cracks and coating defects, especially if you apply acrylate paint in two layers. But the main advantage of this material is that the ceiling painted with latex paint can be easily washed, including using not too strong household chemicals.

Manufacturers of acrylate paints claim that their products can withstand hundreds, if not thousands, of washing cycles without losing brightness and color saturation. But you have to pay for all these advantages, and in the literal sense - acrylate paints are quite expensive.

Silicate and silicone paints

V silicate paints the main material is a mixture of liquid glass, talc and chalk. When dry, a very hard and durable layer is formed on the surface that can withstand from fifteen to twenty years even in rather harsh conditions, and in an apartment with a more or less constant temperature and humidity, the service life of silicate paints will increase even more.

In addition, such a finishing material has high vapor permeability, which allows small particles of water to freely penetrate through it both up and down. As a result, in a room with a ceiling painted with silicate paint, it is easier to maintain a comfortable level of humidity for a person, and the coating will not flake off and damp (although it is still undesirable to use it in too damp rooms). Particular attention should be paid to silicate paints for those who want to finish the ceiling in the bathroom, toilet or kitchen.

But due to the nature of the bonding material used, this type of coating is inelastic and therefore prone to cracking. This should be taken into account, and therefore it is undesirable to cover ceilings with silicate paint in a house where there is a shrinkage of walls and ceilings. It is also worth remembering that silicate paint will not adhere well to a surface where there are remnants of the previous finish, especially if it is made with organic paints. Therefore, the ceiling will need to be cleaned especially carefully before painting. Like acrylate paint, silicate paint is suitable for washing with a damp sponge and household chemicals.

Silicone paints are considered a novelty that appeared on the market of building and finishing materials not so long ago. As the name implies, silicone resins are the main binder here. The result is a very interesting material that combines two seemingly opposite properties - hydrophobicity and vapor permeability. The ceiling, painted with silicone water-based paint, will circulate water vapor and not provoke dampness or stuffiness in the room, but at the same time, the coating will not allow excess moisture to affect the ceiling or thermal insulation layer.

Unlike silicate paints, silicone paints form a fairly elastic layer, while retaining such advantages as durability and resistance to fading. Due to the elasticity of the ceiling, painted with silicone paint, cracks will not appear when the house shrinks. And if earlier there were some small cracks or defects on it, then the paint will help fill them in and mask.

In addition, silicone paint can be easily applied to the old ceiling finish, it can also be used in two or three coats, renewing the old color or changing it to a new one. Like other water-based coatings, it is durable, environmentally friendly, practically does not burn, is not a breeding ground for fungi or bacteria, does not have an unpleasant odor and dries very quickly. The only drawback is the very high cost, therefore, when planning to use it, calculate in advance the cost of future finishing.

Mineral and polyvinyl acetate paints

In them, these paints are based on cement or hydrated lime and polyvinyl acetate(better known as PVA), respectively. The first material is well suited for painting concrete ceilings, but it is very short-lived. And PVA-based paints should only be used in dry rooms, since they are not hydrophobic.

For your convenience, the advantages and disadvantages of various types of water-based paints have been collected in one table and by looking at it, you can make the final choice.

Table. Advantages and disadvantages of various types of water-based paints.

Paint typeAdvantagesdisadvantages
AcrylicVersatility, durability, relatively low costThe complexity of subsequent removal, requires protection with antiseptics
AcrylateLong lasting, washable, elasticCost, complexity of subsequent removal
SilicateVery durable, washable, vapor permeableProne to cracking, requires careful cleaning of the surface
SiliconeVery durable, washable, vapor permeable, elasticHigh price
MineralFits well on concreteRelatively short-lived
Polyvinyl acetateSafeTends to dampen

Ceiling oil paints and enamels

In addition to water emulsion, d For finishing the ceiling, oil paints and alkyd enamels are used... The former use organic oils or drying oil as a binder, the latter use alkyd varnishes and organic solvents. And both of these types of paints have recently been losing their popularity more and more. Let's see why this is happening.

Alkyd enamels allow you to get a sufficiently strong and durable coating on the ceiling, but at the same time it is difficult to work with them - they dry out for a long time and exude unpleasant and even harmful odors to humans. In addition, such enamels have low vapor permeability, which does not in the best way affect the quality of such a coating on the ceiling, especially if it is the ceiling of a kitchen or bathroom.

Oil paints are even worse in terms of their durability and properties. In addition to long drying time, unpleasant odor and low vapor permeability, the oil paint layer is very fragile and can crack even from weak mechanical stress or simply over time. The only advantage of these materials is a very low price, therefore they should be used only with a very limited budget for finishing the ceiling. But think about whether it is worth saving on material in order to repaint everything again in a few years?

Ceiling adhesive

Another inexpensive option for finishing the ceiling is use of adhesives... Basically, it is a mixture of chalk, pigment and glue, dissolved in water. If you wish, you can even make it yourself using the following recipe.

Step 1. A dry mixture is made in proportions to 1000 parts of chalk 35 parts of the pigment of the color you need. Mix the ingredients well

Step 2. Water is added to the mixture. As a result, you should get 3 liters of water per 1 kilogram of the mixture, but it is undesirable to add it all at once - gradually dilute the future paint to the consistency of sour cream.

Step 3. Glue is added, for 1 kilogram of chalk you need about 80 grams of wood glue. You can add it to dilute with starch paste.

Step 4. The resulting mass is filtered through an iron sieve and diluted with the remaining water to a liquid state.

But remember that such a "homemade" will not be of high quality and durability, so it is advisable to prefer a good water-based paint or alkyd enamel.

Painting technology: a list of tools and equipment

Now it's time to talk about how to apply paint to the ceiling. First, let's make a list of tools necessary for painting work.

Don't forget to wear protective clothing as well. It is unlikely that it will be a secret for someone that it is difficult and unpleasant to wash off paint from skin, hair and clothes, therefore, when painting, use either a dressing gown or old things that you do not mind getting dirty. Also, gloves, some kind of hat and goggles will not be superfluous, which will prevent particles of paint from getting into the eyes. When working with oil paints and enamels, you will also need a respirator mask.

Painting technology: preparatory work

The process of preparing the ceiling for paint can be longer and more troublesome than painting itself, but it is necessary. Let's represent it in the form of step-by-step instructions.

Step 1. The material of the ceiling and its condition are assessed. For concrete ceilings, the main thing in the preparatory work is the sealing and priming of cracks, cracks and connecting seams between the slabs, for wooden ceilings - sanding and priming, and for gypsum plasterboard - filling the joints between the sheets.

Step 2. Stripping old finishes. The usual whitewash can simply be washed off with water, but if you have a layer of paint on your ceiling or it is covered with wallpaper, then you need to work with a spatula. In the latter case, the surface still needs to be cleaned of traces of glue.

Step 3. Sealing gaps, joints and cracks in the ceiling with putty and primer. After that, a rough leveling layer of putty must be applied to the entire surface of the ceiling. If there are significant irregularities on the ceiling, then the ceiling needs to be plastered.

Step 5. After that, it is necessary to finally level the surface and remove its graininess with the help of repeated putty and finishing with an abrasive cloth (better known as sandpaper or napkin).

Step 6. Final primer. Here it is advisable to add antiseptics to it, which will protect the ceiling from mold and mildew.

When the ceiling is finally leveled and primed, you can start painting.

Painting technology: the main stage

Now we will consider the process of painting the ceiling and the nuances that should be taken into account in this matter.

Step 1. First, prepare the paint - if you need to dilute it, then do it, observing the proportions. They should be indicated in the instructions attached to the paint, or located on the can or bucket itself. Pour some of it into the tray, don't carry the whole jar with you.

Step 2. Select the corner farthest from the door in the room. Paint over it with a brush, applying a stripe 4-6 centimeters wide.

Step 4. Now use a roller to apply the paint to the rest of the ceiling. In the tray, roll the roller several times and then squeeze it against its edge to get rid of excess ink. Apply it gently, making sure that it is not too thick, but not too thin.

Step 5. Painting with a roller occurs by applying stripes, and the next strip should overlap the previous one by several centimeters.

Step 6. Inspect the applied paint layer from multiple angles. If it is not enough somewhere, roll it over again. And if there is too much paint - quickly "run" the tool over this area to collect its remains.

Step 7. Wait for the paint to dry and repeat the procedure, but this time its layer should be applied perpendicular to the previous one. In this case, it is desirable that the second layer of paint was applied from the window into the interior of the room... This should be taken into account even at the stage of applying the first layer.

It is worth noting that when using acrylic and other water-based paints, the process of finishing the ceiling will be significantly accelerated - they dry out in a few hours, and with proper skill, one or two rooms can be painted per day.

Separately, it should be said about the nuances and features of painting the ceiling with a spray gun.

Having paid sufficient attention to the selection of paints and varnishes and following the technology, you will get a beautiful, evenly painted ceiling with a coating that will last you 10, 20, or even 30 years!

Ceiling finishing materials are presented in a wide range. Someone decides to take advantage of modern methods using expensive technologies. Someone, in order to save money, resorts to the old proven methods. One of the finishing methods rooted in ancient times, but used in the modern world, is painting the ceiling with oil paint.

Pros and cons of the material

Oil paint is made on the basis of organic oils or varnish. This material has many positive and negative properties.

Advantages:

  • Low cost. With a limited budget, this indicator can play an important role.
  • Ease of use. Even a person with no experience and skills in painting can work with paint.
  • The surface is reliably protected from moisture. This greatly simplifies maintenance, since the painted ceiling can be washed with water without fear.
  • The material fits well both on a wooden surface and on concrete, making it absolutely smooth.

Several disadvantages:

  • The main disadvantage is low strength characteristics. After a short time of operation, the original color of the finish changes, it becomes dull. The coating begins to crack, peel off and fall off. There is a need for new repairs.
  • Strong smell. Oil paint is a toxic substance, therefore it is necessary to work only in a ventilated area.
  • Long-term drying of the material. Operation of the surface is possible only after 48 hours after the end of work.
  • When painting the ceiling with oil paint, it is worth remembering that in the future, only a similar composition can be applied to the surface. Before applying another mixture, the previous layer must be thoroughly cleaned.

Analyzing the positive and negative aspects of the oil coating, we can conclude: using oil paint to decorate the ceilings of a living space is not the right decision. However, modern manufacturers have significantly changed the properties of oil coatings. Therefore, in exceptional cases, it is allowed to use a varnish-based coating in bathrooms, bathrooms or in the kitchen.

Ceiling painting

Having stopped the choice on an oil coating, you need to carefully study the technology of its application.

Required tools and materials

Any painting requires certain materials and tools.

To complete the work you will need:

  • Oil paint
  • spatulas, with the help of which the leveling of the ceiling space and the filling of cracks will be performed
  • trowel net or sandpaper, which is used to rub over the putty area
  • bath for stirring the coloring matter and rolling out the roller
  • masking tape to protect surfaces that will not be painted
  • brushes: narrow - for painting hard-to-reach places, wide - for working on the main surface
  • rollers
  • mixer to facilitate the process of mixing the coloring composition and putty
  • primer for improved surface and coating adhesion
  • putty for leveling the ceiling and filling gaps

The preliminary preparation of a set of materials and tools will greatly simplify the process of painting the ceiling with oil paint.

Surface preparation for painting

In order for a ceiling painted with oil paint to look attractive, the master must carefully prepare its surface. What do they do to perform work on the new ceiling:

  1. Cleanse it from dust and dirt;
  2. The surface is leveled;
  3. Close up the joints with putty;
  4. Apply a layer of primer and wait for it to dry completely.

In cases where it is planned to paint a previously painted area, the old paint must be removed. In this situation, the work is performed in several stages.

Removing the old coating

At this stage, you first need to determine the type of coverage, and then select a method to remove it.

The water-based composition is removed with a special wash or hot water. Also, the waterproof emulsion is cleaned off with a grinder. If several layers are applied, you can use a building hairdryer. During the heating process, the coating will begin to flake off and easily peel off.

You will need a special solvent to remove the oil dye. It is applied to the surface, softens the coating. After a while, it is cleaned off with a spatula. The oil coating can be removed with a grinder or drill with special attachments.

You can use the thermal method. To do this, the painted plane is heated with a construction hairdryer, and then the softened coating is removed with a spatula.

Ceiling putty

After that, sanding is performed using sandpaper. Work is carried out over the entire area until a smooth and even surface is obtained. The dust formed as a result of work must be removed.

Surface priming

The primer is applied with a roller or spray. This procedure reduces the absorption of the dye, providing better adhesion to the surface, and the oil paint lays on the primer more evenly and evenly.

Protection of unpainted surfaces

Before applying the coloring composition, it is necessary to protect the areas that will not be painted. For this, the floor and walls are covered with polyethylene, using masking tape for fixing.

Ceiling painting process

To paint the ceiling, you will need a brush and roller. Using a brush, the dye is applied along the perimeter of the ceiling, carefully painting over the joints of the walls and ceiling. Then you can paint with a roller.

Before staining, you must familiarize yourself with the recommendations of experienced craftsmen:

  • You need to paint with parallel strokes, avoiding the drying of the edge of the previous strip
  • It is best to apply strokes with an overlap of stripes of 8-10 cm
  • The applied coating must be rubbed well to avoid the formation of smudges.
  • The surface is painted in several layers. The first layer is applied perpendicular to the direction of sunlight, and the second - parallel
  • The second layer of paint is applied only after the first one has completely dried.

Leveling the ceiling painted with oil paint

If the coloring matter was applied according to all the rules, then its removal can be a lot of trouble. To solve the problem "how to level the ceiling painted with oil paint" you can use this method:

  1. Notches are made on a layer of paint with a chisel or a hatchet. As a result, stripes and scratches are formed on the surface;
  2. The resulting dust is swept away or removed with a vacuum cleaner;
  3. The entire plane is treated with a solution of soda, washed and dried well;
  4. Then cover the surface with a concrete-contact primer;
  5. After it dries, the surface is leveled with a plaster mixture.

With oil paint, the ceiling can be smooth and attractive. But this requires knowing the intricacies of working with the material and listening to the advice of the masters.

Currently, there are many options for decorating the ceiling, but among all the variety, painting remains the most common and economical type of finishing work. However, the process of applying the dye mixture requires certain step-by-step preparatory work, even if you just need to renew the old painting. Therefore, getting started, you should figure out how to properly paint the ceiling with old paint.

Peculiarities

The need to update the appearance of the painted ceiling arises quite often. This is the least time-consuming process. Many property owners choose it precisely because of these advantages, but they also face the question of how to reapply the paint so that the surface is painted as evenly as possible and there are no streaks on it.

This type of finishing work is easy to do with your own hands, the main thing is to know some of the features of such work.

  • If the old coating layer is in good condition, has no chips, cracks, does not flake off, does not peel off, it has simply faded and has lost its attractiveness, then painting can be done over the old coating. This process does not require large expenditures of money and time, since preparatory work is not needed. It is also not necessary to putty the surface before painting it.
  • In the case when the ceiling has already been covered with paint, and the surface has small fragments of peeling of the material, do not despair, the layer of water-dispersion paint does not require complete removal. In such a situation, it is enough to clean the exfoliated areas and apply the coloring composition over the old coating.
  • In the presence of severe defects in finishing, additional work cannot be avoided. Cracks, irregularities and wrinkles cannot be repaired with paint products; such flaws require the consumption of additional building materials.

The old paint coat must be completely removed. This can be done with a spatula, thoroughly cleaning the entire surface. With the help of a brush and a special tool, the ceiling must be primed. After the primer layer has dried, the surface must be well putty, correcting all irregularities and defects. On the dried surface, apply a special base for water-based paint, this layer is the previous painting.

Choice of paint

Currently, compositions are used for painting ceilings, presented in a huge range by manufacturers of paints and varnishes. Each species has its own characteristics, has a number of advantages and disadvantages.

Do not use oil paint to paint the ceiling surface. The best option is water-based paints, water-based paints, or, as they are also called, water-dispersible paints.

  • lack of a pungent odor;
  • absolute non-toxicity;
  • good adhesion to most building materials;
  • the ability to apply to old paint;
  • practicality in use.

The most popular types of water dispersion paints are:

  • Latex- has a good level of coverage and density, after drying it is not washed off, the surface can be wet cleaned. In most cases, one layer is sufficient.
  • Silicate- a good option for exterior decoration of buildings. This type of paint is more expensive than its counterparts, since it is based on liquid glass. As a rule, this coating is used for profile finishing of various surfaces, in warehouses and industrial premises. Perfectly covers concrete or stone surfaces.

  • Acrylic the most versatile paint, adapted to various surfaces. This substance is able to hide minor surface imperfections, and textured paint can remove minor cracks or potholes. Acrylic coating dries quickly enough and does not change color during use. Has a certain level of resistance to direct sunlight. Among the disadvantages is sensitivity to moisture. The color palette of acrylic paints is huge. All shades can be glossy or matte. A matte surface is able to visually increase the height of the ceiling and help hide some defects. Gloss is convenient for use when painting surfaces of large areas, requires a perfectly flat surface.
  • Silicone the paint creates a beautiful, washable finish. This type of paint is suitable for coating surfaces in rooms with high humidity and sudden temperature changes.

Each type of paint, if necessary, can be diluted with water to give the required consistency. With the help of coloring pigments, you can get any desired shade, for this it is enough to add the desired amount of dye to the white composition.

How to calculate the expense?

Before buying, it is necessary not only to decide on the type and color of ceiling paint, but also to calculate the required volume, which is due to its consumption. The amount required depends on the size of the room, which determines the ceiling area. Usually, all the necessary information for calculating the coloring composition is on the packaging, therefore, be sure to read the instructions.

In general figures, you can focus on the following calculations. The average consumption of water-dispersion paint for finishing ceilings is about 100 - 120 g / m2. Depending on the surface, at least two to three coats will need to be applied for a high-quality uniform finish. Material consumption is approximately the same as when using a roller or brush. If we take into account the lack of experience and the inability to grind paint professionally, then the average consumption will be 300 g / m2.

In any case, these figures are approximate, the consumption depends on many parameters, so it is better to take paint with a margin.

Having chosen the required type of water-based paint, you can read the information on the package whether it requires dilution. If manufacturers recommend diluting the purchased material, then water can be added to the required amount of paint, as a rule, no more than 5-10% is required. The prepared volume is best used immediately, do not let it thicken again. The best option is considered to be the dilution of the paint to the state of liquid cream.

It happens that the material does not require dilution, it is enough just to mix it thoroughly. Such manipulations will be enough if you plan to paint the ceiling in one layer; in such situations, the paint should be a little thicker.

For the entire surface of the ceiling, you should purchase paint from the same manufacturer, of the same brand. This requirement is the guarantor of a uniform, monochromatic coating.

If you plan to paint the ceiling in a color other than pure white, then it is better to entrust the tinting to specialists, they will help you choose the right shade and mix the components thoroughly.

How to apply?

It is not difficult to paint the ceiling with old paint, even an inexperienced person can do it with his own hands. After all the stages of preparation, you need to start painting.

The best paint coating is considered, consisting of three layers, in this case you can be sure that there will be no streaks or streaks on the surface. Before applying each layer, the roller must be carefully rolled out in a tray in order to get rid of the excess amount of the coloring composition, thanks to such manipulations, the possibility of smudges is excluded. The first and last layers should be correctly applied perpendicular to the windows, this applies to all types of paint, including acrylic.

When painting, one should not make sudden movements; it is necessary to smoothly drive with a brush or roller along the ceiling, slowly, inspecting so that there are no unpainted areas.

The next layer should be applied only on a dried surface, and there is no need to speed up the process in any way, the paint should dry naturally.

After applying the second layer of paint, it is advisable to exclude the possibility of direct UV rays, as well as the occurrence of drafts, which will help to avoid peeling of the coloring material from the base.

You can paint the ceiling with several types of tools. The most common are a paint brush and a foam roller; you can also apply paint using a spray gun, which is a regular spray gun. This device helps to carry out the painting process much faster, the main thing is that the consistency of the paint is appropriate.

When re-painting the ceiling, it is better to use the same color or close in shade, otherwise you will have to apply a large number of layers in order to completely paint over the previous coating and achieve the desired result.

Along with modern methods of decorating the ceiling in the house, painting remains one of the most common methods for decorating the ceiling surface. This is a fairly economical type of finishing work, but it requires a responsible approach to all stages. An ideal painted ceiling will have a flat surface, free of stains and streaks. When carrying out repairs, it is important to know what types of tools are best to use, what paint to choose, how to properly prepare the surface for painting.

The modern method of painting involves the use of water-based paint, which has a number of positive characteristics.

Types of water-based paint:

  • Acrylic. The most popular decorative paint with high quality and affordable price. Applying just two coats of paint will provide a perfect finish. Acrylic is sensitive to moisture and vapors.
  • Silicone. High quality paint at a high price. It has the best characteristics: resistant to vaporization, dirt-repellent, elastic. The paint adheres perfectly to the surface and is able to mask large cracks.
  • Silicate. This is a high quality paint. I mainly use it for painting industrial premises. It is also suitable for decorating kitchens and bathrooms. The paint prevents the growth of mold and mildew. The material is resistant to steam. It can be used to successfully paint over a leak.

Each type is presented in a wide color palette, which allows you to come up with an original design and decoration for the ceiling. For this, stencils, non-woven fabric can be used, if pieces of wallpaper remain after repair. These materials can be used to create original ceiling finishes, complementing the overall style of the interior. The design options can be varied.

An important aspect when choosing a paint is to study the indicators on the packaging. To determine the consumption of paint, you need to pay attention not to the amount in the can, but to the indicator of paint consumption per square meter.

After choosing a paint, its composition, having decided on the area of painting, you need to pay attention to the choice of tool. The smooth surface of the painted ceiling depends on this.

Application tool

  • Roller;
  • Brush;
  • Electric spray gun.

Painting of ceilings depends on the choice of paint application method and its quality. An important aspect is the qualification of the master who performs the finishing work.

How to paint the ceiling: perfect surface finish technology

Ceiling painting consists of several stages of work. The first stage is very important, the next stage and even the entire success of the finishing work depends on it.

Phased preparation of the ceiling:

  • Leveling the surface. The process will be the same for any ceiling, be it concrete or fiberboard. It is necessary to clean the old finish. If defects are found, you need to use the methods of putty and plaster. If the defect is very large, polyurethane foam is used to eliminate it.
  • Maximum alignment. Depending on the state of the ceiling plane, the putty is applied in one or more stages. When applying multiple coats, it is important to ensure that each is properly dried.
  • Application of the last layer of putty. For this, satengips are used. It is applied using sandpaper, which helps to bring the surface to the most even state. Dry the last layer well, apply a primer and let it dry.

After careful preparation of the surface of the choice of paint and tools, you can proceed to the painting stage.

Step-by-step staining:

  • The correct direction of painting is from the corner to the center, preferably from the window opening.
  • Apply paint in smooth movements without pressing the tool too hard - this can lead to the formation of smudges.
  • Apply stripes of paint in parallel, leaving no gaps between them.

In painting, a lot depends on the tool used. With practice, the painting process becomes more successful.

It is important to know that often one coat of paint is hardly enough. For the most beautiful effect, experts advise to apply several layers. A prerequisite is the drying of each layer before applying the next one.

It is best to apply each layer with new tools to avoid the risk of mixing paints and other troubles.

Is it possible to paint the ceiling with old paint

Those hoping to touch up old paint will be disappointed. Professionals advise to apply paint only to the prepared surface. Otherwise, the old paint, which peels off, will not allow the new one to cover the surface with high quality. Especially white will show defects.

The process of cleaning the ceiling from old paint will be easier if there is no fungus, mold on the old surface, and the plaster remains in good condition.

Preparing the surface for painting will consist in cleaning it from the old finish.

Cleaning steps:

  • Using a steel trowel, clean the surface, removing thick layers of old paint.
  • Using a brush, start priming the surface.
  • Putty the irregularities, having previously allowed to dry with a layer of primer.

Usually the putty dries within 6 hours. After that, you need to treat it with a special trowel mesh, then an additional layer of primer should be applied to the ceiling.

It is possible to paint the ceiling with enamel with your own hands. Before painting, you yourself need to study the sequential painting instructions, as well as professional advice for those who decide to complete the finish on their own.

Tips & Tricks:

  • You need to paint quickly.
  • When painting several levels, each one needs to use its own tools.
  • Use a plastic barrier to protect the walls from splashing.
  • Glue spider web and masking tape are useful for neatly painting the joints of surfaces.
  • Allow the paint to dry evenly in a dark room without drafts.

It is important to know why a poorly prepared surface can ruin everything, and at what stage a painted ceiling can give out a marriage after painting. The paint will lie unevenly, spots and pits will appear on it, you can also notice that bubbles have appeared on the surface. It will be difficult to rectify the situation. To avoid this, you need to take care of creating the most even surface.

The paint should be applied according to the wet edge rule. Layers of paints must be applied strictly after the previous layer has completely dried. For a high-quality result, you can paint the ceiling with "Snezhkoy" - this is a paint that has won the trust of quality and reasonable prices.

How to paint the ceiling (video)

The solution to painting the ceiling of an apartment is an economical and high-quality finishing method. The quality of the design depends on many factors: the quality of the selected paint, its features and characteristics, the type of painting tools and the professionalism of the coloring agent. There are two main stages in ceiling painting: surface preparation and paint application. Each stage requires a responsible approach, strict adherence to the rules of putty, priming and painting. After well-done work, the painted ceiling will look beautiful and stylish; you can apply a decorative pattern to it, which will add originality and charm.

In order for a painted ceiling to become a decoration of any room, you need to know the painting technology and small secrets of professional painters. After watching video tutorials and photos on how to paint the ceiling, you can make sure that there is nothing difficult about it.

You just need to choose a convenient time for the repair, find the necessary tools, show patience and a desire to see the final result after the work done.

Preparatory stage

First you need to free the room from furniture and other foreign objects. If only cosmetic repairs are planned, painting one ceiling, then the walls should be covered with a protective film in order to protect the walls from the ingress of the coloring emulsion.

Before painting, it is necessary to inspect the surface of the ceiling. It should be flat, clean and dry. If you are convinced that the ceiling is perfect, you can prime it. The primer before painting ensures uniform coloring and reduces paint consumption.

But when the ceiling is cracked, uneven, it must be leveled with a putty. Too deep cracks and irregularities in the ceiling must be plastered.

If the old coating does not adhere well, it is removed before the putty. When the old surface is good, even, strong, then it is simply washed.

Oily stains are removed from it with a solvent.

To remove the whitewash from the ceiling, you need to wet it. Better to treat in small areas, as the surface dries quickly. It is necessary to wet a small area, wait for the whitewash to absorb moisture and remove it with a spatula. And do this with the entire ceiling.

It should be noted that if the ceiling was previously painted with oil paint, then the new one should also be oil paint. When you want to change the oil paint to a water-based paint, you will need to remove the top layer of the old paint to the base. Or do it differently: make notches in the form of a grid with a spatula and putty.

After the putty, let it harden. Then level the surface with a special trowel net or sandpaper. Remove formed dust. After the work has been done, the ceiling surface can be primed.

When the ceiling area is damaged by a fungus, then it must be treated with an antiseptic before priming.

If the surface of the ceiling is flat and smooth, without stains, it is primed once. In other cases, apply two or three times, letting each layer dry.

After priming, the ceiling can be painted.

How to paint the ceiling

For painting the ceiling, water-based mixtures are taken. The water emulsion has gained wide popularity due to its advantages:

  • low price,
  • quick and easy to apply,
  • there is no pungent smell,
  • non-toxic,
  • dries quickly
  • has good adhesion (adhesion) to different surfaces,
  • it is easy to give any color to the paint composition by adding a special pigment to it,
  • the tool and hands are easily washed after painting.

Different polymers are present in water-based paints and, thanks to them, emulsions are divided into several types. The technical characteristics, the place of their application and the cost depend on these additives. To learn how to choose a paint for the ceiling, you need to get acquainted with its varieties.

Types of paints and their properties

Acrylic

  • the most demanded of all types;
  • easy to apply;
  • washes perfectly and retains color for a long time;
  • it has a high coefficient of water absorption: the film that forms after drying does not allow moisture to pass through;
  • the emulsion is resistant to ultraviolet rays, the color does not change even under the influence of direct sunlight;
  • retains a presentable appearance with frequent wet cleaning;
  • this paint gives a matte finish.

Silicone

  • elastic;
  • no pungent odor;
  • has high vapor permeability and low water absorption;
  • it can be used in rooms with high humidity (kitchen, bathroom);
  • with this paint, you can forget about the fungus for a long time;
  • such an emulsion is able to paint over cracks up to 2 mm wide;
  • the ceiling can be washed with a brush and not be afraid for the appearance.

Silicate

  • has good vapor and air permeability, resistant to temperature drops and moisture;
  • it is durable, it can last at least 20 years;
  • but this emulsion is suitable for coloring mineral coatings (concrete), but not suitable for polymeric materials;
  • this paint is more suitable for outdoor use.

Latex

  • perfectly repels moisture, so it can be used in the bathroom and in the kitchen;
  • this emulsion can withstand 5000 brushing cycles;
  • it has good adhesion to different surfaces;
  • it has increased elasticity, does not have a pungent odor;
  • on the surface after such a paint, a matte silky coating is formed;
  • but it cannot be used in unheated rooms and often ventilated in winter;
  • at low temperatures, it will begin to crack and flake off.

The paint must be fresh, not expired. The stratified mixture is not suitable for painting.

For self-painting, it is better to take a matte one: errors and irregularities are not visible on such a ceiling.

Pay attention not to its quantity in the container, but to the consumption rate per 1 sq. M.

When you have decided on the choice of paint, you need to buy a roller. A correctly selected roller is the key to successful painting. A large surface cannot be painted neatly and beautifully with a brush. Therefore, you need to be serious about choosing the right roller.

Pay attention to the material of the fur coat. It is necessary to choose a fluffy one. Foam and velor rollers are cheaper, but they absorb paint very quickly, create splashes and form bubbles.

The seam in the fur coat should not be rough, so as not to leave stripes on the surface.

The strength of the pile will prevent the fiber from coming out and staying on the ceiling. It is necessary to pull the pile and, if it remains in place, then the roller is of high quality.

The tightness of the roller can be determined by squeezing it in your hand. If the shape remains the same, then the roller is good. A soft tool is deformed and does not rub off paint well.

The roller must have a special telescopic handle. If it is not there, then you need to buy it, since it is inconvenient to paint with a short roller, even while standing on a stepladder.

When you bought a roller, and this is the main tool, you need to purchase additional equipment: a plastic tray or bath, a paint brush.

Ceiling painting

If all the material is available, you can start painting the ceiling. First you need to prepare the emulsion, according to the instructions on the can or in a bucket. Some paints are diluted with water, others just need to be mixed well with a construction mixer.

Pour the finished composition into the tray. Dip the roller into the finished mixture. Run it along the ribbed side of the tray to remove excess paint from the roller.

After such rolling, the roller coat will be evenly impregnated with paint. It is necessary to exclude dry areas on the roller. If necessary, dip the coat into the paint again and remove excess emulsion. If paint is difficult to remove from the roller, it can be removed with a brush.

Then pull out the roller handle or attach an extension to it. Now you can paint.

In order for the ceiling to come out even and beautiful, you need to know how to paint the ceiling correctly.

Rules for successful painting

It is necessary to press the roller to the surface and move it along the ceiling so that the paint is rubbed and there are no bubbles. This process is not time consuming.

But if you have no experience and do it for the first time, you can practice. For example, take a piece of drywall and paint the surface. Or paint on the wall, which will then be covered with wallpaper.

To get a streak-free painting, you need to follow the paint application technology.

It is necessary to paint the ceiling in stripes across the room so that the joints are invisible. You need to start from the far corner of the room from the entrance. Apply stripes with an overlap of 8-10 cm. Be sure to wet on wet so that the joints are not visible.

Let the first layer dry. The drying time can be read on the label. Apply another layer perpendicular to the first.

How many times you can paint the ceiling, there is no definite answer. It all depends on the condition of the surface and the properties of the selected paint.

Apply the last layer in the direction of the window, towards the light source, and the previous one across.

It is necessary to paint at a pace, not allowing the paint to dry, otherwise stains will appear on the ceiling.

It is better to notice poorly colored areas in time in order to quickly fix them. It is convenient in the process of work to have a person nearby who will view your painting from different angles.

If you leave even one small area unpainted, then it will stand out as a stain on the ceiling. To avoid this, it is necessary to paint over not only this area, but also the entire surface.

If spots are seen after 3-4 layers, then it is necessary to putty, sand and then only paint.

In order for the work to be of high quality, it is necessary to paint in the daytime, in bright light.

During painting, the temperature must be stable, drafts must not be allowed.

Do-it-yourself ceiling painting is not difficult. By adhering to all the tips and tricks, even a beginner in painting will be able to do this job with high quality.
