Furniture from flights. Instructions on how to make furniture from pallets - a detailed description of how to make stylish and beautiful furniture with your own hands (110 photos)

Today, pallet furniture has moved from objects of amateur hobby and design delights to the category of industrial products. But many home craftsmen and individual entrepreneurs continue to make it: it is cheap, profitable and useful to everyone. Furniture, and not only furniture, from cargo pallets (pallets) is a rare example of an intensely promoted trend these days, in which fashion trends are organically combined with practicality and usefulness.

Why is pallet furniture so popular? Freight pallets are produced in the millions and are used to transport mainly building materials and piece cargo. This is justified both economically and environmentally: without pallets, compensation for waste for battle, damage to packaging, etc. would require many times more than for pallets, the consumption of raw materials, production capacity and money. The materials (mainly wood, see below) are of high quality on the pallets, but the service life of the pallets is limited: for example. with a working brick load at a full rate of 1 t / sq. m - only 1 transportation cycle; although the pallets actually run up to 3-5 cycles.

As a result, wholesalers accumulate mountains of pallets (see Fig.) Awaiting revision or sending for processing, and in frequent self-construction or small contractors, excellent seasoned wood, the manufacture of useful things from which is available at home and practically free of charge, flies to the landfill. Pallets, conditionally still suitable for business for their intended purpose, but not obsessed, can be bought at a price 2-3 times lower than the same volume of commercial pine. Wholesalers will gladly give up pallets awaiting the queue for disposal for pickup. As for small contractors, the typical answer to a request is no pallets? - like: “Pallets? Yes, take it all on ...! Only all at once! And the fight of bricks, tiles is not needed? " Such generosity is quite understandable: used pallets are flammable material, which is forbidden to litter the territory near buildings of any kind, and warehouses / dumps of cargo pallets must be located and equipped in accordance with all fire safety rules. The Fire Inspectorate, as you know, if it detects a violation, it will not put hunts on your hand. As a result, lovers of tinkering can get great material literally for free and in any required quantity.

Raw material or material?

To make furniture from pallets with your own hands, you do not need special skills and complex tools: each pallet itself is a ready-made durable assembly unit of convenient sizes for everyday life (see below). But, unfortunately, many examples of homemade products from pallets serve as clear examples of how not very strong, and even frankly bad things are obtained from good, strong structural modules. The fact is that a cargo pallet is not just a set of pieces of wood, but a material itself with certain properties, requiring some specific technological methods. Not only "paper experts" do not know them, unsubscribing something like: "Pallets stacked on top of each other (of course, fixed with screws) with a soft mattress can serve as a bed." (the spelling of the quote is original), but what and how to do with the pallets is not described in the manuals on carpentry and woodworking. There is no such officially recognized ornamental material as a used cargo pallet, there is also it - recycled wood raw materials. Therefore, a significant part of this publication is devoted to rational methods of working with pallets, described randomly in various sources and tested in practice by experienced furniture specialists and, in part, by the author of this article personally.

What can be made from pallets?

There are so many ideas for furniture from pallets in Runet that just listing them would require more than the amount allowed for this article. Some of them are shown in the photo; ex. home bike parking from pallets is elementary simple, convenient and not so trivial.

Useful pallet items

For more on crafts from pallets, we suggest watching the following video, and then we will deal with things, the creation of which from pallets requires a more thoughtful technical approach.

Crafts and pallet furniture ideas, video

In the garden and in the country

Most often, garden furniture is made from pallets: wood, even painted, harmonizes well with living greens. Rotting-resistant wood species are used on pallets; after biocidal and hydrophobic impregnation under painting / varnishing, such furniture serves in the open air for years. A cheap biocide and at the same time a water repellent for outdoor furniture made of pallets is used engine oil. Oil, alkyd and nitro varnishes and paints are firmly adhered to wood impregnated with waste. If the product will be painted / varnished with acrylic compounds, then the wood should be impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion. It will cost a little more, but medical sanitation and ecology are ideal.

Country and garden furniture from pallets

A useful hanger-rack for a summer residence can be obtained by simply hanging a sanded painted pallet on the wall, pos. 1 in fig. By the way, you also need to be able to grind "hairy" pallets, see below, in the technological sections. If you add 2-3 100mm card loops, a couple of hooks to the wall, 2 pieces of rope or chain, and a window bolt as a latch to the same solid pallet, a folding work table will come out instead of a tool hanger. It is very convenient to tinker with seedlings, soil mixtures and pot crops on this one: the scattered falls down, and does not clog the work surface.

Another option is to also put a one-piece pallet upright and secure with L-shaped pins. Pallets are designed for weights of many hundreds of kg, and 3-4 concrete blocks that make up the tabletop, left over from the paving of the path, are not a load for them. But we have a compact work table that can turn into a bar on the street without changes, pos. 2. Well, it happens, with a manual ...

Country furniture made of pallets for gazebos and verandas, pos. 3 and 4, most likely, will require already disassembling pallets (see below) to obtain moldings: long materials - boards, beams, plinths, moldings. Tables, chairs, stools are already made in a completely carpentry way, because furniture made from solid pallets or parts thereof is rather bulky. However, it is not difficult to make a table or a stool with your own hands, it would be good material, but you get enough of it from pallets. What is technologically more complicated (sofa, bench) made in traditional ways is also cumbersome; in this case, pallets will allow an inexperienced beginner to obtain a quality product, similar to garden furniture.

The sitting corner in the garden is the perfect place for pallet furniture. Its dimensions and weight are not as important here as the endurance of the pallets. It is technologically possible to make furniture from pallets for a garden in different ways (pos. 5-8), but in any case, the problem of tilting the back arises, for which see a separate section below. If the back is straight, then comfort is achieved by pillows that need to be carried / carried in and saved from the rain.

Note: pay attention to pos. 5, not everything is so simple there. Namely, the armrests of the sofa. It is no more difficult to find a vessel with a drink in such a niche than on an armrest, but it is almost impossible to accidentally dump it down.

Finally, it is worth working on a complete disassembly of 2-3 pallets to make a picnic set: a table with benches. It can be in the gazebo, pergola and outdoors. You can move the picnic corner together or even alone: the weight of the finished structure will not exceed 25-30 kg. What a 4-seater picnic table with benches looks like is shown on the left in fig; drawings of its support frames are given in the same place on the right. The length of the table top and benches is standard for Euro pallets, 120 cm. By connecting a pair of pallets for the table top, as described below, it can be increased to 240 cm, and the capacity of the product up to 8 persons without adding support frames. Connections of legs with crossbeams - through bolts M8.

About the backrest tilt from the pallet

The backrests of pallet furniture, such as those on the left and center in the top row in the figure, are fragile. In the first case, steel screws in the fasteners work in shear and gradually tear the tree. In the second, it happens even faster, because the ratio of the lever arms when reclining is large. The same circumstance applies if the tilt of the back is obtained by sawing off a part of the seat tray with an excess (orange arrow at the top right). The fastening assembly (yellow arrow in the same place) now works in tension, but the turning lever is still long and the screws are gradually climbing back.

The design of the back is quite reliable, shown on the left below. Here 2 thick trees (pieces of timber) abut against each other and work in compression, which the timber holds well. In the same way (work in compression), you can strengthen products that are more openwork (in the center below) or more loaded (on the right below) by placing spacers or support posts. For a chaise longue made of pallets, it is better to make them adjustable by completing the nodes shown by blue arrows, hinged on the bolts and cutting holes in the lower supporting frame for the heels of the swivel struts.

Note: however, tensile stiffeners can also be used to achieve the desired overall strength of pallet furniture. See eg. below is a master class on making a sofa from pallets. In this case, these are the armrests.

Kitchen

Decorative hanger from the pallet in the kitchen

One lacquered pallet in the kitchen can serve only or mainly as a decorative element (see fig. On the right), because natural wood fits perfectly into almost any kitchen interior. However, most often kitchen furniture made of pallets is made fully functional, here again the strength and durability of the material plays a role.

Technologically, the simplest are all kinds of hangers, shelves and minibars, pos. 1-4, 6 and 7 in Fig. below. Not much more complicated, but much more beautiful and suitable for zoning living space is a bar counter made of pallets, pos. 5. The main thing here is how to tint the boards of the countertop, we will figure it out with this.

Kitchen furniture from pallets

A pallet rack (pos. 8) does not require any special carpentry skills, but a complete disassembly of pallets will be required. See also below how to simplify and facilitate it. The resulting high-quality material will be enough for an amateur carpenter to make, for example, a kitchen cabinet with a wine cellar or a kitchen set. The "trick" here is that the material is waste: what if suddenly did not work out right away, pallets are not an array of furniture for 3,500 or more rubles. per sq. m.

An interesting way is the case with pallet tables, dining and cutting, pos. 10 and 11. Usually, in tables, the worktop is heavily loaded, which makes special demands on the quality of its workmanship. But a solid supporting structure made of pallets provides a reliable basis for any invoice (glass, stone, etc.) or type-setting table top. Just the latter can be assembled with your own hands from boards and beams from disassembled pallets, see below.

To the house and apartment

Furniture made of pallets has a peculiar look, therefore, when it is made for home, it must correspond to the style of interior design, which is not always feasible. For example, a pallet bed will perfectly fit into the now fashionable loft style, but an aesthetic inconsistency is likely to arise with rustic styles, although the bed is wooden.

Video: loft-style pallet bed

Nevertheless, aesthetically versatile options for the execution of furniture from pallets are possible if the product is relatively small, compositionally does not dominate in the setting and is supplied with some details that create visual transitions from a visually rough “core” of pallets to the general decor. An example is a work table that fits into an apartment of almost any design, except for frankly pretentious styles (empire, baroque, shabby chic, etc.), see fig.:

Pallet work table

The connecting links in this case are the legs of a geometrically regular shape, but painted in a contrasting tabletop and the surrounding color. The utilitarian dignity of this table is the vast niches in the cupboard, where you can stuff all the necessary rubbish. This table is also well suited to the kitchen: the dimensions of its countertop (from 60x80 to 100x120 cm) are optimal for a table in a small kitchen.

The legs in this product are ready-made, a set for kitchen tables with a post-formed worktop, but they are not attached here in a regular way. Standard fastening of metal detachable legs for tables - 3 pairs of screw-threaded socket for each. However, the threaded sockets for such legs sit firmly only in chipboard or dense fine-grained wood, and easily break out of soft coniferous wood. Therefore, the legs of this table are attached with 6x80 self-tapping screws at the attachment points per beam and through M6x (40-45) bolts to the boards. Washers with a diameter of 30 mm or more are placed under the bolt nuts. Regular fastening pairs will be useful to a craftsman for something else.

What pallets are there?

Let's get acquainted first with the types, structure and dimensions of cargo pallets. This will be needed, firstly, to calculate the number of them required for this work. Secondly, for the competent development of your own pallet design. Among the latter (see also at the end), there are those that allow you to achieve 30-40 times savings in money (!) And a 3-7 times reduction in labor costs in comparison with standard counterparts.

Types of cargo pallets

Single-layered 2-entry cargo pallet (pos. 1 and 6 in the figure) - the same age as the Egyptian pyramids. At least the first images of him are known from the time of their construction. Modern euro pallets (pos. 2 and 7a) are made single-layered 4-entry. See below for more details. it is with them that you most likely have to deal.

Note:"Two-way" and "four-way" in this case means the number of ways of supplying slings under the pallet flooring during rigging.

2-deck 2- and 4-entry pallets (pos. 7b and 7c) are produced in limited quantities for heavy concentrated or especially critical loads and are rarely available, as well as plastic reusable (pos. 3 and 4) or metal pallets (pos. 5). Worn out plastic pallets make a good "green" entrance to the garage (road-lawn), costing 2-4 times cheaper than the same from a special mesh, and metal pallets, suddenly you have such, it is best to hand over as scrap metal - they are made mainly made of aluminum.

The sides for euro pallets for valuable piece goods, pos. 8, they are made of good plywood. But don't try to rip the corner fittings out of them, they are driven into place by a machine like a large, powerful furniture stapler. The mustaches of the fittings sit dead on the plywood, so it's better to just cut off its strips with fittings.

Drawings and standard sizes of euro pallets

Euro pallets differ from traditional cargo pallets by the flooring of boards of different widths. This simple technique made it possible to increase the turnover rate up to 3-7 cycles under full load, subject to periodic revisions. There are several standard sizes of euro pallets (on the right in the figure), in contrast to the statements in most popular sources. You will most likely come across the most popular 1200x800 pallets. Drawings of such a pallet are given on the left in the figure, from them you can calculate how many boards and pieces of timber will come out of one pallet.

Note: as a source of ornamental moldings for wood craftsmen, pallets of European size and design of domestic production are most suitable, see Fig. on right. Their advantage in this quality is boards of the same section 100x25 and all pieces of timber with dimensions of 100x100x80. It is much more convenient to work with such than with different sizes.

How to make furniture out of pallets?

Making furniture out of pallets is almost never done with just sawing a pallet into pieces. Already in the simplest kitchen shelf, you need to attach the boards from below, forming the shelves themselves. There are enough boards on the same or the next pallet, but they must be removed from there. Further, second-hand pallets are not smoothly planed, they need to be externally refined, then firmly connected as needed and finished the finished thing. In general, the manufacture of furniture from pallets is reduced to the following operations:

  • Full (for working material) or partial (for it and assembly modules) disassembly of pallets, including sawing. As for sawing, there is only one piece of advice: lay a film on the floor and carefully collect the sawdust. Then they will make an excellent putty, see below;
  • At the request and intention - toning of workpieces, including underlining the texture of the tree.
  • Grinding (sanding) and rough putty.
  • Assembly of blanks into a product and final putty.
  • Finishing - painting, varnishing. We will not dwell on it, because it is no different from that of all other wooden products.

Disassembly

If you have already worked with wood, then you should consider pallets as a source of molded materials: from the same number of pallets, in this way you can get much more and more valuable things. Take an interest in online auctions or special resources for prices for type-setting tabletops, collars or boards (serving, chess, etc.) from boards or end cuts, see fig. Find out the prices yourself, tk. a person familiar with carpentry and woodworking does not take a word for such numbers.

Stacked table tops and a checkerboard made of pallets

However, first the pallets need to be disassembled, which is not easy: they are knocked down very tightly and the nails are most often corrugated. The hats are sunk into the wood, and just picking them with a nail puller will ruin more boards and lose weight yourself than you get. That's right, quite easily and quickly, the dismantling of cargo pallets is done using a carpenter's ax and a sledgehammer of 1.5-2 kg:

  • The ax blade is slipped a little under the board being removed from the end, under the timber - perpendicular to the wood fibers;
  • Once or twice, not very hard, but sharply, they hit with a sledgehammer on the butt of the ax so that its blade goes under the board / beam by at least 1/4 of its height;
  • Press down on the handle with your hand so that the part to be removed rises by at least 8-10 mm;
  • They plant the part to be removed with the butt of an ax (do not pound too much so that the tree does not crumple!);
  • If necessary, operations 1-3 are repeated until the heads of the nails come out enough to pry them off with a nail puller.

Pallets of foreign production sometimes come across fastened with self-tapping screws. It is not possible to turn them out with an ordinary screwdriver, it is weak for this. The way out is simple: a bit suitable for this type of hardware (for a cross, a hexagon, etc.) is tucked into a drill from 250 W and unscrewed by turning on the tool for reverse rotation. It is impossible to wrap the hardware with a drill instead of a screwdriver: from a blow at the end, the gearbox or chuck jaws may break (in screwdrivers, collet chucks with elastic petals). But during everting, shock loads are excluded and there is nothing to be afraid of for the instrument.

Toning

Wood tinting (toning) is made, as you know, with special compounds - stains. Wood staining is a rather complicated process and requires compliance with precautionary measures: working solutions and their components are toxic. However, straight-grained porous wood of pallets can be tinted with colored varnishes, thinned two to three times. Nitro lacquers are best suited; thinner for them you need to take the appropriate, for example. 646 or 647. Tones of almost the same quality are given by water-based acrylic varnishes, they are diluted with distilled (necessarily!) Water. Oil, bitumen and oil-resin varnishes are unsuitable for toning wood. Wood tinting with varnishes is carried out step by step as follows:

  • Initial operations are carried out on the "hairy" tree, before sanding;
  • You need to work in the shade or in a shaded room at a moderate (up to 25 degrees) temperature;
  • If it is necessary to emphasize the fibrous texture of the wood, then the part is passed along the fibers with a steel brush before impregnation;
  • The diluted varnish is applied in 1-5 layers, each subsequent layer after 5-10 minutes after the previous one is completely absorbed. The brightness and saturation of the tone depends on the number of impregnations;
  • The part is dried for at least 3-5 times of complete drying of the varnish indicated on its packaging, so that the varnish also dries in the surface layer of the solid wood;
  • The part is roughly sanded with sandpaper No. 120-140 by hand or with a grinder in one pass to remove splinters, burrs and rough irregularities;
  • Sanding is continued with sandpaper No. 240-260 or finer. After each pass, the sawdust is blown off, removed with a barely damp cloth and the resulting texture and tone are assessed. When the desired surface appearance is achieved, grinding is stopped.

Grinding

Tool for sinking nail heads - doboinik

Before sanding, especially with a grinder, you need to additionally sink the nail heads. In addition, in order for the putty (see below) to hold firmly, the holes above the fastener caps should be no smaller than 4-5 mm. The hats are sunk using a special tool - a doboinik, see fig. on right. It can be made on emery from a steel bar with a diameter of 8 mm or more or by grinding off the point of a bench center. The diameter of the doboynik area should be slightly less than the diameter of the nail head.

Putty

Furniture made of pallets is rarely putty, but in vain. In fig. it can be seen that the rough, but well-plastered pallet furniture looks great both on the street and in the apartment, on the left and in the center. But the holes and pits in the table top of the table on the right, which obviously cost a lot of work, are also clearly useless. Maybe this is the designer's intention, but here it definitely did not work out. If only because design is a purely functional art, and dirt readily and happily collects in the holes and dents of the countertop.

Plastered and non-putty pallet furniture

Homemade wood putty is made from sawdust mixed with PVA or acrylic glue. The proportion is 1-3 volumes of sawdust per volume of binder. A thick putty (sawdust: glue = 3: 1) is putty in the rough for a day or two before grinding. Without a rough putty, the surface of the part from grinding will go in a wave due to the same holes and cracks. Rub it with a liquid putty until the surface of the assembled product is even before finishing.

Building modules

Pallets and parts of them are usually assembled into furniture on straight steel plates, see fig. below. But this is only out of ignorance of the fundamentals of mechanics and strength of materials: mechanical stresses flow to the solid and rigid, practically point-like attachment points on a less solid basis and the table or bed will soon loosen, although nothing of the kind seems to have happened on them.

Assembly of furniture from pallets on steel plates

Diagrams of the correct assembly of furniture fittings from pallets are given on the next page. rice. Pos. 1 - vertical angle, for example. in a bar counter or garden chair. The base is a steel corner 50x50x2 or 60x60x2 60-70 mm wide for diagonal pairs of nails or self-tapping screws with a diameter of 4-6 mm; from its edges to the edges of the timber should be 15-20 mm. An important role is also played by pairs of hardware, driven obliquely, with a distance of 30 mm from the edges of the timber: it is they that "take away" the focus of mechanical stresses to the most durable place - to the center of the piece of timber (the connecting boss of the pallet).

Connecting pallet furniture sub-assemblies

At pos. 2 shows the connection of pallets in a horizontal angle, eg. for the table; the bottom boards (of which there are 3 pallets in pallets) of the side pallets are shortened by the thickness of the table top pallet. It works on the same principle, from which it is clear that it is impossible to remove the upper bosses of the sidewalls (marked in red!), As is often done, they must be rearranged.

The supporting base of the bed made of pallets (pos. 3) is assembled with the help of overlays cut from the removed bottom boards. In addition to high strength and rigidity (the base of a bed of 8 pallets measuring 240x200 cm does not require additional reinforcement), thus voluminous niches for linen boxes are obtained. On the same principle, the base of the coffee table is made of a pair of pallets (pos. 4), but for the sake of beauty, the bottom pallet is cut along the perimeter by the thickness of the board (25 mm). Remains of the bottom bosses with a thickness of 75 mm are sufficient to ensure overall strength with a large margin.

The middle of the underframe of a large table is always highly stressed and under its own weight, therefore, the supporting structures described above are not suitable in this case. The underframe of a large, 200x120 cm, dining table from pallets is assembled according to the principle of a backbone frame (diagram on the right in the figure), and such a table in real life looks not at all heavy, on the left in the same place. If niches for boxes are not required, but a lot of greater strength is needed (banquet table made of pallets), then the side plates can be made the same length as the middle ones and fixed in the same way. It will not work even longer and stronger, the entire length of the underframe, there are no such long boards in the pallets.

Pallet table base device

Countertops

Wooden countertops are traditionally pulled together from planks. The process is complex, requiring production experience and special equipment. The purpose of joining the boardboard for the countertop is not only to obtain a solid surface, but also to ensure strength. In a pallet table, all loads are taken over by the underframe (remember, up to a ton can be poured onto a pallet). The next thing that is important in this case is that pallet boards are cut very accurately.

As a result, a good, even and non-creviceable tabletop of a pallet table can be made with your own hands without experience and a special tool, collecting it along the flooring of the underframe as if it were a crate. Quite simply: the first board is nailed tight. The next one is nailed first with small nails obliquely into the edge opposite to the first board, and when the gap converges, they fasten it tightly into the face near the first board. The following boards are fastened in the same way, the surface is putty in rough, polished and putty cleanly, covered up to complete invisibility and crevices. Which are already a hair thick.

What not to do

Nothing is perfect, and there are things that don't need to be made of pallets. The first of them is a staircase, on the left in Fig. No, no, it will turn out to be durable, even if it is a herd of elephants. But for people, the height of the steps should be 17-20 cm, and from the pallets it turns out 14 or 28. It is inconvenient to bruise the nose and abrasions on the knees.

Examples of unsuccessful use of pallets

The second is a bench like the one in the center. Maybe her manufacturer's warehouses are crammed with chains and lanyards, but what kind of armrests are these? And the back staggers if you lean your elbows. And the third is the pallet headboard. Here they are already against sanitation and hygiene: a dust collector forms in their heads, which is difficult to clean.

Is it just furniture?

No, not only. From pallets, you can simply, quickly, inexpensively, without a complex tool and experience, do many more useful things with your own hands, especially for a summer cottage or a house with a personal plot, see the figure below:

Useful pallet structures

  • Vertical flower beds of various types, pos. 1-4. About flower beds, incl. vertical, written in other sources, but this is almost furniture, at least for garden furniture. The flower bookcase is also furniture.
  • Gazebo, pos. 5. In this case, an absolutely correct technical solution has been chosen: the outer boards of the pallets are arranged vertically. The result is a ready-made lathing for outer sheathing with siding or planks (herringbone), and inside there are cells for insulation. That is, this is how you can build a house from pallets.
  • Pos. 6 - can you see who is lying there at the entrance? That's right, it's a pallet doghouse. And you can't guess right away. The material is waste, experiment with the decor as you like, you don't need money for this.
  • Pos. 7 and 8 - the endurance of the pallets is already working here. They can be used to build both the simplest compost heap and a real bioreactor that supplies the site with humus. Applying more humate fertilizers, you can get a soil on a very thin sandy loam or loam, comparable in fertility to that of black earth.

Well, will it come in handy on the farm? And find out the cost of the volumes of industrial wood required for these buildings yourself. And figure out the savings.

Pallets are an inexhaustible source of ideas for arranging a suburban area. They can be used to construct comfortable furniture, functional storage systems and create original decorative elements. The main advantage of pallets is that raw wood acts as the material for their manufacture, which serves as an excellent basis for creating exterior elements that can give comfort to your possessions. We will consider in more detail how to adapt these transport structures and how to make furniture from pallets with our own hands.

Pallets are wooden structures that play the role of packaging material, the use of which makes it possible to simplify the transportation of various kinds of goods.

Pallets are in the form of rigid supports, assembled from knocked down wooden planks, placed at a short distance from each other

The weight of an empty pallet is on average 15-20 kg. The overall dimensions of the structure, depending on its purpose, can be:

  • 120x100x12 cm (standard pallet);
  • 120x80x12 cm (euro pallet).

The wood used for the manufacture of structures is selected strong and durable. This is done in such a way that they can withstand loads of up to 1000 kg. And therefore, even already used pallets are able to find a second life, having served as functional elements in the arrangement of the site for more than one season.

Today, pallet furniture occupies a leading position among design products in the popularity rating. Some designers produce entire collections in an eco-style, embodying the most incredible ideas in them using ordinary building pallets. Taking the ideas you like as a basis, you can implement them in your own way.

Where can I get pallets?

Wooden pallets, although they are quite solid structures, are still considered by many manufacturers and transport companies as packaging material.

Pallets weakened from the load can no longer be reused for the transportation of heavy loads, therefore, after use, they are simply disposed of

You can get used packaging material using one of the following methods:

  1. Buy used pallets. You can easily find announcements of this kind on thematic portals. The price of products ranges from 30-150 rubles per piece.
  2. Contact manufacturers or shipping companies directly. Most of them are ready to give away the used packaging free of charge, as long as they do not throw it away themselves.

If desired, the pallet can be assembled by yourself. It is enough just to stock up on boards 15-20 mm thick and wooden beams with a section of 60-70 mm. Having determined the dimensions of the future structure for yourself, you only need to cut the boards into blanks of the required dimensions, and then fasten the elements according to the standard scheme.

Material preparation

Wooden pallets are convenient because they can be used in a variety of ways. They can be easily broken and fastened, covered with fabric and dyed, combined with other materials and supplemented with rollers.

To use pallets for making blanks, you need to prepare the material. To do this, first of all, they should be cleaned of dust and dirt.

To extend the service life of wooden structures and eliminate roughness and burrs, which can cause a lot of inconvenience during the operation of furniture, surface grinding will help

It is most convenient to carry out the work by processing a wooden surface with a grinder. For safety reasons, cleaning is best done in a well-ventilated area, wearing a face shield.

Not the entire structure can be polished, but only that part of it that will directly "contact" the body. Also, if it is necessary to create blanks of non-standard dimensions, the pallets should first be disassembled. To simplify the work, it is better to sort the cleaned boards by condition and width.

And also, when planning to place future furniture in the open air, you should take care that it is not afraid of high humidity. For this, it is advisable to cover the surface with a layer of a primer intended for outdoor use, which has a moisture-repellent effect.

Without additional processing under the influence of atmospheric phenomena, light wood will acquire a grayish tint, and the lower boards in contact with the ground will rot at all, not having served more than one or two seasons

Options for making furniture from pallets

Pallets, like ready-made elements of a constructor, are an excellent basis for the manufacture of functional interior items. There is nothing difficult about making furniture from pallets. Suffice it to recall how, as a child, you assembled lockers and beds from miniature matchboxes. The same skills need only be applied when working with structures of slightly larger sizes.

Garden chairs and benches

To create a comfortable and practical bench, we need:

  • 2-3 pallets of standard sizes;
  • wooden bars with a cross section of 50-60 mm;
  • metal corners;
  • electric drill with a drill;
  • washers with bolts and screws;
  • protective equipment (glasses and gloves).

To give a more presentable look to the finished product, also prepare varnish or any paint intended for woodworking.

So let's get to work. A standard pallet is assembled from seven planks. To make the seat and back of the bench, we take a pre-cleaned pallet and cut it into two parts.

To connect the back and seat, as well as to make the armrests of the bench, you can use boards by disassembling another pallet, or you can use the bars available on the farm.

Aligning the edges of both parts at right angles, we fasten them with self-tapping screws or by means of screws, tightly pulling the blanks

You can increase the reliability and strength of the connection between the back and the seat by using the double fastening method.

To stiffen the structure on both sides of the connected parts, we attach 1-2 narrow slats, placing them parallel to each other

The length of the sidewalls depends on the height at which they will be located. From the remaining thicker boards or wooden blocks, we cut out 4 blanks for arranging the legs.

The legs are attached to the bottom of the pallet on both sides, using metal corners to strengthen the fixation.

Having assembled the main structure, it remains to supplement it with some elements at will, for example, cut decorative elements on the back, decorate the sides with armrests. The finished bench is covered with a colorless varnish or paint of the selected shade - it all depends on your preferences and the overall design of the exterior.

By the same principle, you can make corner benches, equipping cozy corners in the garden, or even build free-standing chairs.

Self-made furniture from pallets will be indispensable for a suburban area. Acting as a worthy replacement for old worn-out furniture, it will easily fit into different interior styles.

A comfortable bench made of pallets, made of wood of a natural light shade, will look great in the garden against a background of lush greenery and variegated flowers

We cut the structure in half so that four crossbars remain together, acting as a seat, and three become the back of the future bench

Hanging beds and sofas

Spacious beds and hanging sofas are not much more difficult to make. They will be a good addition to the interior of a terrace or veranda.

Sitting on such a comfortable sofa is a pleasure to enjoy the picturesque landscape and enchanting sounds of nature.

The bed in a simple version consists of two standard pallets, the sides of which are carefully fastened to each other.

If you plan to build a more comfortable place to relax, equipped with a comfortable mattress, you will have to tinker a little longer. For the placement of the mattress, you will need to build a special box, which can be assembled from the boards of one of the remaining unused pallets.

To make a box in pallets, we cut out the middle support, and fix the cut out part between the sides, forming the sides

As a result, you should get a structure, the size of which corresponds to the perimeter of the bottom of the bed. The height of the upright corner posts depends on the thickness of the mattress. We install the finished box on two pallets pre-connected to each other and fix it with self-tapping screws.

From wider beams or leftover boards, you can build a headboard. The gaps between the edges of the pallet are useful as drawers for storing pastel items.

It remains only to cover the finished structure with two or three layers of paint, or cover it with a dense variegated fabric or leatherette

If you plan to move the sleeping place, changing the "scenery" of the blooming garden, equip the structure with wheels. But keep in mind that for this purpose it is worth using only powerful wheels that are able to withstand the mass of not only the structure itself, but also the weight of a person reclining on it.

When arranging a summer cinema in the fresh air, a multi-storey bed that can accommodate a large family or a whole company will be very useful.

To make the rest on such a bed more comfortable, complement the structure with soft mattresses and voluminous pillows.

The easiest way to protect the underside of mattresses from dust is by lining the surface of the pallets with breathable covering material such as agrofibre.

Hanging sofas are built according to the same principle, equipping heavy structures with strong ropes or chains.

Dressers, tables and shelves

A garden wooden table made from those available materials will be a good addition to chairs and benches.

The set, decorated in the same style, is able to ennoble the garden plot, acting as an elegant decoration of the suburban exterior

Wood goes well with other materials. Therefore, furniture made of wooden pallets can be safely supplemented with textile accessories, glass elements, stone decorations and plant compositions.

For the manufacture of a small table, only 2-3 pallets are required.

In general, the technology for making a table from pallets is not much different from that used to create the chairs and garden benches described above.

To create a structure, decorated with a solid canvas, we stuff boards from the second blank into the voids between the slats of the first pallet. We grind the finished canvas thoroughly, cover it with a stain and leave the workpiece to dry completely. To get rid of roughness, gently rub the surface with fine-grained emery paper or re-grind.

We proceed to the assembly of the structure. At the corners of the lower part of the table, we fix 4 legs by means of a bolt connection. To arrange a shelf under the working canvas of the table, we fasten a shield assembled from pallets disassembled into boards. In the assembled structure, cover all unpainted areas with two layers of stain. We fasten the rollers to the table legs.

The tables look interesting, the work surface of which is supplemented with built-in containers for planting spicy crops

The style of outdoor garden tables depends only on your imagination.

The garden table can be decorated with a large playing deck or a huge British flag

Old pallets can be easily adapted even for the arrangement of multifunctional shelves, thanks to which you can place small containers with flowers or the necessary things for plant care in the open air. A folding shelf can also find its application in the arrangement of a suburban area.

When folded, the folding shelf takes up a minimum of space, and when unfolded it acts as a convenient stand for placing items needed in the household

Some craftsmen, developing the idea of creating functional furniture from old pallets, went even further.

Original sideboards, cute dressers and roomy cabinets - this is not a complete list of those pieces of furniture that can be created from wooden packaging.

If desired, even a real "house for gnomes" can be assembled from pallets, which will become an elegant decoration of a terrace or playground in the garden. The two-storey house is assembled from vertically installed pallets.

The use of white color in the design makes the structure visually light and weightless, and the green strokes allow it to harmoniously fit into the surrounding landscape

The opinion that pallet furniture can only be created exclusively for yourself is wrong. Some craftsmen put their products up for sale, turning their favorite hobby into a profitable project. The popular dog feeders are a prime example of this.

Convenient feeders with stable legs have a presentable appearance, which makes them fit perfectly into the interior of the house and the surrounding landscape design

The secret of the popularity of hand-made wooden pallet furniture is easily explained by its originality of design. It's cheap, but no less practical. In addition, safety concerns are motivated by people who create or purchase ready-made pallet furniture. After all, pallets are made of wood that has not been treated with any chemicals. Therefore, these products assembled from pallets can rightfully be classified as one of the most environmentally friendly pieces of furniture in the world.

Finally, here are some ideas for inspiration. Feel free to experiment to make your life brighter. Enjoy your creativity!

Video selection: pallet garden furniture

Coziness in the house is very important for each of us, and many owners are ready to spend a lot of time and money to create a beautiful, comfortable interior. However, we already know that it is possible to achieve the desired result without special costs, using available means for this. It turns out that such unassuming-looking items as wooden pallets can do you a good job: you can make almost any furniture for your home and garden with your own hands from them.

Garden furniture and loft-style furniture made of wooden pallets - the reasons for the popularity and manufacturing features

Interior designers have long ago embraced the idea of minimalism when decorating rooms, and are quite successfully implementing it. Recently, the "loft" style has been very popular (loft from English - the top floor of a warehouse, workshop, industrial premises). You can easily recognize it by its rough brick walls, ventilation ducts left outside, and rusty floor beams. As if a group of students, unable to find suitable housing, decided to settle in an abandoned warehouse and furnish it with basic necessities. In this case, furniture can be found at a flea market, or even made from improvised means.

Loft style implies roughness, roughness of the room, and furniture from pallets fits perfectly into it

These are the tools at hand and wooden pallets or pallets have become. It turned out that with the proper approach, they can become not only comfortable, but also original furniture. In addition, items from this material have found themselves in styles such as country, minimalism, rustic, Provence. In addition, wood is a very popular material in construction, decoration works, furniture and decorative items.

Wooden pallets as raw material: selection rules, drawings

Wooden pallets, or pallets, are used as a packaging material that simplifies the transportation of various goods. The weight of a pallet is usually 15–20 kg, and the dimensions vary depending on the purpose:

For the manufacture of pallets, wood is chosen, which is distinguished by its strength and durability, because during operation the structure must withstand a load weighing up to 1000 kg. Most often, the most common types of wood in our latitudes are used: pine, linden, oak. So you can safely use used pallets for the manufacture of furniture, they will perfectly withstand new loads.

Note! Unlike standard pallets, Euro pallets are stamped on the front sides. In the manufacture of furniture, these stamps can serve as an additional decoration.

Marking stamps on the ends of Euro pallets will become an additional decoration for future furniture

Since the main purpose of pallets is to be a packaging material for transporting goods, it is not difficult to get them. You can buy pallets (new or used) according to the announcement on the respective portals. Or you can contact a manufacturing company or a company that regularly uses pallets. Disposal of obsolete packaging materials often requires a lot of money and time, so the company will gladly give you pallets free of charge or for a nominal price.

With certain skills in joinery, you can make your own pallets. To do this, you will need wooden beams with a cross section of 60–70 mm and boards 15–20 cm thick. Cut blanks of the required size from the boards according to the dimensions of the future structure and fasten them according to the standard scheme.

How to handle pallets before use

Wooden pallets are very convenient, because you can use any method of using them: disassemble, fasten together, combine with other materials, paint or cover with fabric. But in any case, primary processing and preparation of the material is required. After all, used pallets could be used for food, building materials and much more.

Pallet handling tools

So, the main working material - pallets - is already at your disposal. Before you start making furniture, stock up on the following tools and materials:

  • metal corners;
  • electric drill with a drill;
  • washers with bolts and screws;
  • protective equipment (glasses and gloves);
  • medium grit sandpaper or sander;
  • primer;
  • measuring device - tape measure or ruler;
  • brushes.

In case you do not have an electric drill at hand, you will have to work with a hammer, respectively, replacing the bolts and screws with nails. True, such work will take more of your time, and the result will not be as high-quality.

For work, you may need power tools with spacers, nails, bolts and screws, a tape measure, a screwdriver

If you want to give the product a more presentable look, use varnish or paint for woodwork, choosing the color of your choice. In addition, for the manufacture of more complex structures, you may need accessories and additional elements from other materials: wheels, metal legs, fabrics, glass.

Furniture items most often made from pallets

It only seems that the pallets are suitable for the simplest structures, on which you can only sit in the garden. In fact, with some effort and imagination, you can create a real piece of design art, which, in addition to its functional purpose, can become a home decoration. Observing a single stylistic direction, you can easily furnish your house with handmade furniture made from pallets.

We suggest that you familiarize yourself in more detail with the options for interior items created from such a simple material.

Coasters, tables, coffee tables

It is believed that pallet tables are the easiest to design, which is why they are popular among home craftsmen. Even without special experience in joinery, you can easily and quickly build a small table from a couple of pallets.

There are a lot of manufacturing and processing options. You can simply sand the finished product or varnish it to give a warm shade to the wood and protect it from environmental influences. You can paint the table and even apply drawings to it in accordance with the style of the interior in the room. Designers recommend placing a sheet of glass on top as a table top: this will not only give the table an original modern look, but also greatly facilitate the care of the wooden surface of the product.

It is easy to make a desk or dining table from three pallets, and a sheet of glass can be put on the tabletop

It will not be difficult for you to make even a writing or dining table. To do this, it is enough to place several pallets perpendicular to the pallet used as a table top. Drawers can be fitted in the openings between the top and bottom of the pallet.

Beds

Pallets are great for making bed frames. For example, a base of pallets stacked in a single row gives you a simple, versatile Asian-style bed where all the furniture is low. And you can fix pallets in 2-3 tiers or put them on wooden supports, as in the classic version of the bed. In any case, you don't have to worry about ventilation of the finished product. But there is also a minus: it is better not to jump on such a bed, the boards of the frame may not withstand the intense load.

The pallets will make an original bed and a headboard for it

In addition to the bed itself, pallets are great for building its headboard. If the interior of your bedroom is designed in a loft, country, minimalist style, this option is a wonderful find. You can position the pallet as a headboard horizontally, vertically, and even build a narrow shelf for books and lamps.

Armchairs, sofas

Most often, pallets are used for the manufacture of garden chairs and sofas, but with proper processing of the material and the addition of additional elements, such furniture will perfectly fit into the home environment. You will most likely need soft seats and backrests, but sofa cushions can easily fulfill their role.

Just two pallets - and you have a great comfortable chair at your disposal

A big plus of making such chairs and sofas is that you can adjust the height and width of the product at will, as well as add or remove armrests if necessary.

The pallet sofa can be of any height and width convenient for you.

With enough building pallets on hand, you can easily build an entire ensemble consisting of a sofa (even a corner one), a couple of armchairs and a coffee table. The main thing is to adhere to the same style and scheme for connecting pallets into a single structure.

Decor elements

This is where there is a lot of room for imagination, so it is in the manufacture of products involved in decorating the room. And pallets in this matter will come in handy. For example, you can make a panel from dice of the same size, on which you can apply a picture or attach small shelves for small things.

Very convenient shelf for various little things

The upper part of the pallet with the boards displaced close to each other will serve as a tray; it is enough to attach interesting handles to it.

Attach handles to the top of the tray - and you get an original tray

And if you have a pet, cat or dog that loves to lie around, then he will surely appreciate a cozy resting place. The process is even simpler than making a sofa or an armchair: connect two pallets perpendicularly and lay a soft backing. Holes can be made to accommodate bowls of water and food.

Your pet will be happy with such a comfortable bed.

Country and outdoor furniture

Against the background of nature, wooden furniture looks especially organic, even without special processing. If your dacha has a barbecue area, then pallets will help you make it more comfortable. Tables, chairs, benches, swings, seats and dish racks, and even a fence with flower containers - all this can be made from ordinary pallets.

DIY step-by-step instructions for making pallet furniture

If you have already decided what exactly you want to make, but have no idea how to do it, we offer you several options for furniture, from simple items to a real exclusive. The work of the master is afraid, and you can easily cope with the work.

Note! In addition to pallets, in some cases, you can use wooden boxes for storing vegetables, or even combine these materials in one product. Here are a couple of options.

Coffee table or bedside table on wheels

Perhaps it is worth starting with the easiest to make, especially if you are new to carpentry and are working with pallets for the first time. For a coffee table you need 1-2 pallets, and besides them:

  • drill;
  • hammer;
  • nail puller;
  • screwdriver;
  • screws;
  • glue for wood;
  • wheels for the table;
  • primer;
  • brushes for primer and varnish;
  • simple pencil.

Let's get to work.

  1. First of all, the pallet needs to be cleaned and sanded. Thoroughly wipe it off of dirt and dust, then sand using a drill with a special attachment for processing wood. You can rub the surface with sandpaper.

    Clean and sand the pallet with a woodworking attachment

  2. Disassemble the pallet by carefully removing the nails with a hammer and nailer. Then fold the boards tightly against each other on the countertop. Glue them together and for reliability, nail with two boards from the inside.

    Disassemble the pallet into planks and fold them into the countertop

  3. Wait for the glue to dry, then reinforce the worktop from the inside with a few more planks. This way you will have a place to store the logs.

    Add a few more planks on the bottom side.

  4. Cover the countertop with a primer and, when dry, a coat of varnish. Now try on the casters. Attach them to the bottom of the countertop, mark the places for the screws with a pencil.

    Try on the casters to the underside of the tabletop

  5. Arm yourself with a drill and drill holes for screws in the marked places. Secure the casters.

    Fasten the casters in the marked places

Pallet armchair

Since we have finished with the table, it doesn't hurt to make an armchair for it. Let's deal with it right away, since the tools are needed the same as in the previous case.

  1. First you need to cut the pallet in two, and this should be done along the board located in the middle. Cut the resulting halves in half. You will have a seat, backrest and two armrests.

    Cut the pallet into parts for the chair

  2. Sand all details. Choose the one that will become the back, make a cut on one side at a slight angle: the part must be installed at an angle.

    Join back and seat at a slight angle

  3. After connecting the backrest and seat with screws, fasten them between the two armrests designed to hold the chair. To make the product strong and reliable, fasten the parts with nails and screws.

    Fasten the back and seat between the armrests

  4. When you are finished with the connection of all the parts, cover the finished chair first with a primer, then with varnish. If you want to put such a product in a room, you can paint it in a suitable color and decorate it with pillows or soft seats.

    Paint the chair and put soft pillows on it

Sofa with drawers

Let's move on to more complex structures. The pallets have a space between the boards in which you can store small items. But if you try, you can make a sofa with drawers. You need 6 pallets for it; pre-disassemble three of them into separate boards. And we also need:

  • plywood sheets;
  • drill;
  • Bulgarian;
  • jigsaw;
  • screws;
  • four wheels;
  • drawer handles;
  • primer;
  • wood paint or varnish;
  • brushes or roller;
  • sandpaper;
  • cushions and seats.

Pallets must be cleaned and sanded before work.

  1. One of the whole pallets will serve as the basis of the sofa, to which you need to immediately attach the wheels. If possible, buy casters equipped with brakes from the store.

    Attach wheels to one of the whole pallets

  2. The second pallet will become the back. Cut it to 47 cm in width and 91 cm in length.

    For the back, cut the pallet on both sides so that it is smaller than the base.

  3. Make armrests from the third pallet. Cut the pallet into two pieces measuring 47 x 80 cm.

    Another pallet, cut in half, will serve as armrests

  4. The back and seat of our sofa must have solid surfaces, so the spaces between the pallet boards must be filled. To do this, you need the pallets that were disassembled at the very beginning. For reliability, the joints can be coated with glue.

    Fill the openings with planks from the disassembled pallet

  5. Attach the backrest to the base using screws or self-tapping screws.
  6. On the sides of the sofa, fasten the remaining 2 pieces of the pallet - the armrests. Cover the sofa with a primer, top with varnish or paint, and leave to dry completely.
  7. In the meantime, make two identical boxes out of plywood sheets. The height of each box corresponds to the height of the hole between the bottom and the top board of the pallet minus 5 mm, width and length - 37.5 cm each. Cut 2 parts for the bottom and 8 parts for the sides, connect with screws or glue. Attach the handles from the outside. It is advisable to nail a transverse board at the bottom of the pallet, which will hold the inside of the boxes before inserting them.

    Collect all parts of the sofa, make drawers, paint the product and let dry

A comfortable and stylish pallet sofa is ready. It remains only to lay out the pillows, and you can enjoy the rest in an embrace with your beloved cat.

Your pets will also like this sofa.

    Prime and paint prepared pallets

  2. Now start assembling. First, cut the pallets in half, and rub each cut with sandpaper: the surface must be carefully sanded. Screw the castors to the bottom of the base pallet and paint again. Place pallets on top of each other.

    Assemble prepared pallets into a structure

  3. When the paint is dry, decorate the curbstone: attach decorative elements, lighting, pebbles to it.

    Decorate an almost finished cabinet with decorative elements and lighting

  4. It remains only to fasten the pallets to each other with screws or screws.

    Fasten the pallets together with screws

As you can see, this cabinet is very roomy and comfortable. When needed, you can easily move it to another place.

Simple pallet bed

In order not to waste a lot of time and effort, we suggest you make a simple version of the bed. For her you will need:

  • three pallets of the same size, you can take 120 X 80 centimeters;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • nails;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • sandpaper;
  • primer for wood;
  • varnish or paint;
  • hammer;
  • brushes;
  • roller.

Try to find good, sturdy whole pallets so that you don't have to clean them for a long time.

  1. Carefully sand the prepared pallets with sandpaper or a drill with a special attachment. When done, wipe everything down with a damp cloth.

    Sand the pallets

  2. Cover the pallets with primer using a roller - much faster than brushing. Wait until the surfaces are completely dry.

    Apply paint in several layers

  3. After the paint has completely dried, proceed to join the structure. Binding is done along the long side. Drill holes in the pallet boards and screw in the self-tapping screws. On the back side, which will stand right next to the wall, reinforce the frame with wooden planks.
  4. It remains only to put the mattress, blanket and pillows on the finished frame.

    Assemble the bed frame, secure and place the mattress on it

Following this principle, you can make a frame for a double bed using 6-8 pallets. If you need a taller frame, stack the pallets in 2 or 3 rows.

Rack made of pallets or wooden boxes

The easiest way to make a rack from a pallet is to remove the cross bar from it and build in 2 or more boards at the same distance from each other, securing them with self-tapping screws. These boards will serve as shelves. Of course, the product needs to be sanded and varnished or painted.

A minor revision of the pallet - and you have a rack with shelves

It remains only to fix the rack on the wall. Using the building level, mark 2 points horizontally on the wall surface. The distance between them should be slightly less than the width of the rack, by about 5 cm. Drill holes along the points, insert dowels into them. Screw in the self-tapping screws so that their caps are not tightly twisted. On the top board of the rack from the pallet, mark the same points, drill holes, screw the hinges to them with self-tapping screws. Loops can be metal or rope.

You can add legs from an old table to your shelving to give it an old-fashioned feel.

Hang your shelving unit on the wall. If you deem necessary, you can screw the vintage legs from the old table to the bottom shelf: this will further strengthen the structure and give it a retro spirit.

Or you can make a rack from wooden boxes used for storing vegetables. It's even easier here: you need 12 identical crates in good condition. Sand them thoroughly and cover with wood stain or dark varnish. However, you can take any paint on wood to match the color of the interior. Fasten them together on all sides with nails or screws. The design is quite stable due to its wide surface, and does not require additional fastening to the wall.

From several drawers, fastened together, you get a spacious rack for a pantry, dressing room or living room

Such a rack is not only suitable for a pantry or basement, it will look great in the living room as well.
