How to build a wooden fence. DIY wooden fence: we make a beautiful wooden fence step by step

At all times they were famous for their popularity. This was largely due to its relatively inexpensive price and ease of installation. But today the situation has changed a little, and now not just fences are created from wood, but real masterpieces.

Let's consider everything in detail.

Making a wooden fence on your own. Step-by-step procedure

The construction of a wooden fence can be roughly divided into several stages, namely:

  1. Installation of support pillars;
  2. Installation of crossbars;
  3. Sheathing of the installed frame.

Each stage in construction must be completed in full.

Installation of support pillars

The installation of the support pillars is carried out by the backing method. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

It's important to know! Sand with crushed stone will be denser if the mixture is moistened with water.

Installation of transverse lags

Cross joists, which are made of wood, are best installed using brackets.

The installation algorithm is as follows:

It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the distance between the transverse lags can be reduced. However, in this case, the structure can reduce its strength. The support itself must be at least 10 centimeters above the casing, and the bottom must be at a distance from the ground at a distance of no more than 15 centimeters.

Sheathing of the installed frame

Before you start installing the mounting boards themselves, you must remember that there are several ways.

In one of the methods, the picket fence is installed on the logs before the latter are mounted in the supports, namely:

If we talk about the second method of installation, then it implies the direct installation of each board separately. In this case, it is necessary to prepare for a long and laborious process. After each installed board, you need to measure the distance between them (if you need a gap between the boards) and check the clear vertical.

It is worth noting that any of the methods is popular with the owners of private and country houses, so it is impossible to say which one is better. Everyone chooses an option for himself, depending on the choice of the design of a wooden fence.

How can you process and paint a wooden fence

It must be understood that the installed wooden fence takes on a variable climate at all seasons. For this reason, it is mandatory.

Important to remember! Before installation, all metal components of the fence must be primed and painted.

Do not forget that ultraviolet solar radiation is harmful to a wooden fence for the reason that as a result of their influence, the wood loses its internal moisture, thereby it loses its bearing capacity and its very appearance.

Such impregnation must be treated several times on a primer with the possibility of deep penetration. After that, you can use moisture resistant paint and varnish to give the wooden fence an attractive look.

The price of pleasure

If we talk about the cost of the required building material, the average price is shown in the table:

Building material name Volume Cost price
Board 1 m 3 About 3 thousand rubles
Cement 1 kg About 10 rubles
Antiseptic 10 l. About 2 thousand rubles
self-tapping screws 500 pcs. 300 - 400 rubles
dye 3 l. About 400 rubles
Metallic profile 1 meter About 130 rubles
Grinding wheel 1 PC. About 50 rubles
Edged board 1 m 3 About 4 thousand rubles

Design options

To date, there is still no such material besides wood, which was read as pliable for the implementation of various design solutions (while the tree is very affordable in the price category).

But in this way, this fence has an internal look. No one will say that the view has become worse.

In this version of the design solution, attention was paid to every little detail.You can see how the contours themselves are worked out, and the corners are smoothed in full. In the photo you can see the sliding gate from the same yard.

Agree, few of us know what techniques this or that designer uses to realize his fantasies. But they use: roasting, create the effect of antiquity, successfully combine wood with various metal forged elements, and even banally polish wood and subject it to painting in various shades.

How do you feel about the brutal style? Agree, the view is simply impressive.

To implement such a design solution, you only need a jigsaw, a sander and woodworking skills. If you have the tools and desire, you can achieve the effect of shabby wood.

And who how to relate to puzzles? If you wish, you can initially draw a drawing on the board, and then cut it out according to the template. It is worth paying attention to the fact that this work is considered jewelry, since each board has its own clear size and bend.

At the same time, the most difficult process in the construction of such a wooden fence is its installation (not everyone is able to make such a layout).

For the construction, first of all, it is necessary to carefully consider the selection of the board. In no case should it be allowed that in any place of the board there was a different thickness or width. In this version, a distinctive feature is its affordable price, but this is offset by the enormous work that is required to create such a creation.

Despite the fact that a board with a thickness of up to 1.5 centimeters is not very suitable for fences, it can be used to create an excellent fence in the form of a lattice. Agree, the view is no worse than the previous options. And if you decorate it with green spaces that will braid it, the view will be gorgeous.

Over the past few years, non-edged board has increased in price by more than 15-20%, but this does not prevent it from being kept in a low price range. Moreover, it is often used when erecting a wooden fence in this style.

As you can see, this example clearly shows one of the design options when working with a non-edged board. Any exclusive solution can be achieved if desired.

How do you like the design solution in the style of blinds? Agree, the view is just a bomb.

A selection of wooden fences

Beautiful fences made of wood

With a little woodworking skills, you can create a beautiful fence in a short time.

This design option is popular with many owners of private houses, since its creation does not take much time and effort. Agree that the view is very attractive.

Standard fencing suitable for both private homes and suburban areas. It does not require any special skills and abilities, but at the same time it has a beautiful appearance.

Carved fences

To create carved fences with your own hands, you need to have the skills of wood carving.

It can take more than 3 months to create such a fence, since every little thing plays a big role. But it's worth it. This type of fence is suitable for any interior.

What about this cutting option? Surely many people dream of such a fence, because it can not only emphasize the individual style, but also create the illusion of antiquity.

Decorative fences

Decorative fences are often used to create rock gardens or simply in landscape design.

Small fences made of wood can emphasize the peculiarity of a particular plant, complement the interior of the personal plot.

If desired, you can create any decorative fence of one color or another. This does not require any skills and abilities.

Antique wood fences

Many people dream of creating a small fairy tale from their site and completely immerse themselves in the old days.

This version of the antiquity effect is great for areas where wooden houses are located. In combination with the same m fence, you can create a real fairy tale for yourself.

And if you add a little bit of decor in the form of a thick rope? The view is simply spectacular. Surely the neighbors will come to the owner of such a fence with admiration.

Fences made of corrugated board under a tree

If for some reason there is no desire to work with a tree, you can install a fence made of corrugated board. Thus, you can not only increase the service life, but also create the illusion of a wooden fence.

If you wish, you can use light-colored wood-like corrugated board, which is perfect for any interior. The service life of such a fence is over 25 years.

Another option is to use corrugated board in darker tones, which allows you to create the illusion of varnished wood. Perfect for wooden houses, or buildings sheathed with plastic wood.

For a private house

Depending on the wishes of the owner of a private house, the fence itself can be made in any style.

High fences have always been popular with private house owners. Thanks to them, you can hide everything that happens on the site from prying eyes, make the fence beautiful and exclusive.

Another option is to install a fence with small gaps. This type of fencing is perfect for any private home, regardless of its size and style.

From a profiled sheet under a tree

As a rule, the installation of this type of fence is affordable for any resident of our country. Such fences are perfect for installation anywhere, regardless of whether it is a summer cottage or your own private home.

In this photo you can see that the profiled sheet can combine a combination of decorative stone and the tree itself. Looks great and has a long service life.

For those who love minimalism, the option of creating a fence from a profiled sheet under a tree is perfect. This variety belongs to the classic style and is perfect both for performing a direct duty - protecting the site, and as a good decor element.

Made of brick and wood

When creating a fence, brick and wood combine just fine. Designers often try to combine them when creating interiors in the room itself and outside it.

The fence is made in a classic style using ordinary bricks and planks. Thanks to the successfully selected combination of color palette, such a fence looks not only rich, but also very attractive.

This composition combines curly elements of a wooden fence with a brick one. A well-chosen color palette allows it to be used in any meta.

Of stone and wood

This combination of building materials in most cases is used in country houses and summer cottages.

It will be very difficult to recreate such a fence on your own, and you need not only to be able to handle this material, but also to know the intricacies of mixing a special solution. But you must admit that such fences are capable of surprising even the most picky critic with their beauty.

Wooden fences in combination with decorative stone create the illusion of an ancient fortress. Often used for installation in country cottages or on the territory of private companies.

Patterns on wood on the fence

Now in the world of wooden fences there is a tendency to use additional patterns. They allow you to create something special and unique of its kind from a simple fence.

As you can see, such a pattern is very difficult to make with your own hands, unless a person has sufficient skills in working with woodcarving.

You can order a Chinese-style composition from woodcarving specialists, as shown in the photo. This option is considered to be quite common in our country.

Original fences made of wood

Surely every owner of his site would like to install an original fence. But what are they?

Such an original design of wooden fences is not often found in our country. This is largely due to an expensive pleasure (the initial cost can range from 40-50 thousand rubles).

Such a design solution allows not only to make their neighbors look at the fence with envy, but also makes the site very rich and individual.

Horizontal wooden fences

When installing fences, many of our compatriots often ask themselves - which is better vertical or horizontal? In fact, the difference here is only in taste.

Speaking about such a vertical fence, we can confidently say that everyone can make it on their own, while spending a short period of time and money. The classic style is suitable for fencing any area.

The photo shows that the vertical fence is made using a complex design feature. It is very difficult to do this at home, and if you wish, you will have to seek help from specialists. But it's worth it.

Forging with wood in the fence

At all times, they gave the fence power and attractiveness. However, due to its considerable price, it is not very popular.

The wooden fence using forged metal knitting needles in the photo makes it original in its kind. Gives the site style and beauty. Moreover, forged elements make the fence structure very rigid, which significantly increases the service life.

This variant of the combination of wood, brick and, in fact, forged elements, makes the fence almost lifelong. It does not have difficult climatic conditions, it is difficult to damage it, and most importantly, it is beautiful and stylish.

Picket fences

Most of our citizens make picket fences. A very good fence can be made from this material. You just need to look at these photos.

Of course, if this fence is painted, and then varnished and it will turn out very well, but it is quite attractive as it is. What is characteristic - it can be done in the shortest possible time (the period of its construction is no more than 1 - 2 days).

If you have a violent imagination and a great desire of the owner of the site, you can give such a magnificent designer fence, which will never cease to please the eyes of everyone around.

Fence made of wood ladder

A ladder fence is not uncommon in everyday life for owners of private houses. Firstly, this type allows you to save on the board, since small gaps allow you to reduce the volume of material, and secondly, it turns out in the end very well.

The photo shows a ladder fence, which from the inside is still sheathed with corrugated board. Thanks to this, from the outside, it looks very impressive, while inside the site the fence looks very neat.

In most cases, this type of ladder is installed in country private houses. The small gaps between the planks allow you to see the beautiful green space that can be planted behind the fence.

How to make a fence inexpensively

The video below shows you how to make a cheap wood fence.

Wooden fences have undeservedly faded into the background. And completely in vain! Of course, in terms of stability and reliability, a fence made of boards is significantly inferior to its brick and concrete counterparts, but a minimum of time, effort and money is spent on the construction of a wooden fence.

At the same time, you can handle all the necessary activities yourself. With a little imagination and doing everything according to the instructions, you will create a truly original and interesting design.

What to build a fence from?

Before proceeding with the construction, we pay due attention to the choice of the source material. We use only high quality solid wood for arranging the fence. The wood of oak, aspen, ash, Siberian larch, alder, mulberry is perfect.

Siberian larch is the most interesting among all the listed options. A fence built from it will serve as long as possible. If one of the main enemies of most wood species is moisture, then larch from contact with water only becomes stronger.

The use of pine is limited only by the arrangement of the fence, in case of breakage or wear of the fence, such material can be replaced without much financial costs and efforts.

Picket fence - pine

Important! And in no case we do not use birch for the construction of a fence - it is extremely unstable and short-lived.

It is also important to choose a quality material for the manufacture of supports. Wooden pillars will be best combined with wooden spans. You can both dig them into the ground and attach them to a special metal stand (consoles), concreted in previously created recesses.

Important! To extend the life of wood, it must be pre-impregnated. It will reduce the intensity of the harmful effects of moisture, air, fungus and other harmful microorganisms on the building material.

To consolidate the effect, it is recommended to treat the wood with a special dye, for example, Swedish paint. It will give the material a very beautiful shade. If desired, a different color can be applied over the dried Swedish paint.

To prepare Swedish paint, we need:

  • copper sulfate - 250 g;
  • salt - 250 g;
  • iron red lead - 250 g;
  • drying oil - 230 ml;
  • flour - 570 g;
  • water - about 4.5 liters.

Following the given proportions, you can prepare any required amount of dye.

The paint is quite economical. About 200-250 ml of dye is spent to cover 1 m 2 of the surface. The above recipe allows you to prepare a golden paint. If you want to get a different shade, replace red lead with manganese peroxide, ocher, or another component of your choice.

Swedish paint is prepared in the following order:

  • paste is cooked. To prepare it, stir the flour in 3 liters of water;
  • the finished paste is passed through a sieve - this allows you to remove lumps from the mixture;
  • the strained paste is put back on the fire. Salt and copper sulfate are added to the mixture. Stir the mixture constantly, achieving complete dissolution of the vitriol;
  • continuing to stir the paste, add drying oil to it, and then pour in a certain amount of water (usually about 1.5 liters) until a homogeneous liquid composition is obtained.

Apply the finished paint to the wood in a double layer.

For example, you can build a fence like a wattle fence. The boards are fastened in a curved state. Trying to straighten, they will fit snugly enough to the support posts.

Another great option is to fill the space between the supports with wood siding. We fasten the sheathing boards starting from the bottom, maintaining a 25 mm overlap.

Fences made in the form of blinds look no less original. By placing the planks with a downward slope towards the street, you will create an invisible hedge that is resistant to wind loads.

Also, the boards can be nailed from the end. To perform the highest quality plating, we first make markings on each rack.

In the case of installing metal posts, they can be hidden by sheathing the posts on both sides. We close the metal supports from above with wooden plugs.

If desired, you can make the fence more original and on wooden support posts. We make inclined cuts-grooves in the supports, and then insert the ends of the lamellas into them. Additionally, we fasten each bar with self-tapping screws. To hide the attachment points, we close the screws with wooden plates. We crown the upper part of the supports with plugs.

To make the fence look more original and modern, we can fill the boards with a small gap (up to 15 mm). Moreover, the narrower the boards are (of course, within reasonable limits), the more interesting the design of the fence will be.

You can also use boards of different widths. When choosing this method of sheathing, be sure to make sure that the pattern on the adjacent sections matches.

There are a lot of wooden design options. Choose the one you like and start building the fence. You already possess all the knowledge necessary for this.

DIY decorative fence. Photo

Increasingly, instead of massive and monumental brick and stone fences, ordinary people choose wooden fences and fences for the house: photos of successful examples allow you to make sure of the exceptional attractiveness of such a solution. It is the tree that is considered the material that is able not only to guarantee protection against encroachment, but also to look not too intimidating at the same time.

Wooden fence: a practical decoration for the site

Fences and railings made of wood can be considered a traditional option for our society. The abundance of wood and its cheapness allow even not very wealthy people to use this material. But in Western countries, a tree, on the contrary, is considered a sign of the wealth and success of the owners of a house or plot. Such a fence today is not only a status, but also elegance, environmental friendliness and modernity of the overall style solution.

The choice in favor of a fence made of wood is often based on one of the factors:

  • Environmental friendliness. In the modern age of technology, artificial materials and a polluted environment, each person strives to surround himself with the safest materials. Wood becomes the optimal solution for those who care about the health of their family members.
  • Ease of care. A wooden fence is that part of the household that not only will not require special attention, but will also make you feel like a creator in the process of caring for it. Carpentry skills will help you replace the plank if necessary, and the ability to handle a brush will refresh the color of the fence and make it more elegant.
  • Beautiful wooden fences for your home are also practical. Serving as reliable protection from the weather and from prying eyes, such fences, with proper care, will last for more than one year. Wood is the most versatile material that can be useful in any situation: for example, as a fence for a yard, as a border between summer cottages, as a divider of a vegetable garden into zones.

FACT! In order for the fence to serve as long as possible, you should choose the most durable and reliable wood species: for example, oak, ash, larch... It is also important to take into account the characteristics of moisture and soil composition.

  • Harmony is the main thing that distinguishes a wooden fence from a metal or stone one. Living and pleasant material fits perfectly into the environment, and if you have the skills, the fence from it can be turned into a work of art.

No less important factors that should also be taken into account are its relatively low cost (for example, in comparison with a similar product made of metal or brick) and ease of installation. It is possible to fence the site with such a fence in a short time, even without the involvement of experienced craftsmen.

Types and features of wooden fences

Choosing a wooden fence for a private house, each responsible owner makes a whole picture for himself: what kind of fences it is customary to build, which of them are the most reliable, what is the cost of erecting this or that type of fence. Experts distinguish between the following types of wooden fences, suitable for use as a fence:

  • A classic fence is a solid canvas consisting of tightly fitted boards that can be positioned both vertically and horizontally. The classic version of the fence can be strengthened with a foundation of bricks and stone, and also used as its base posts made of wood, metal or stone.
  • The palisade consists of vertically installed and tightly fitted logs. In order to guarantee maximum strength and extend the life of the logs, it is recommended to install them on a foundation and not in the ground. This type of fence looks quite aggressive and is suitable for active protection of property from encroachment, which is especially facilitated by sharply sharpened tops of logs.

ADVICE! A picket fence can be an extremely original and attractive fence, as it allows you to choose the optimal pattern, the distance between the slats and the shape of the top edge.

  • Herringbone or ladder. Fence boards are mounted on top of each other horizontally, and the use of special spacers provides excellent ventilation with complete opacity of the canvas.
  • The lattice is considered the most decorative type of fence. The 45-degree criss-cross or intertwined planks in the classic braid frame look almost like a work of art. This type of fence is often used as a support for climbing and climbing plants.

ADVICE! To give such a fence a more expressive appearance, designers recommend using a combination of several options for the location of the planks in one canvas.

  • A wooden fence in the style of a cowboy ranch is a rather specific type of fence, which is more suitable for delimiting an area or controlling access to a certain part of the site for people or animals. The horizontal bars look exotic and are suitable for use over large areas.

Installation and maintenance of a wooden fence: the subtleties of the process

Among the inhabitants there is an opinion about the complexity of the structure on the section of the fence made of wood. That is why the owners often do not think about how to do it with their own hands, but prefer to turn to specialists. However, with a competent approach to the choice of technology and compliance with all construction standards, the construction of a fence on your site is not such a difficult process.

In the process of caring for a wooden fence, the most important stage is the preliminary processing of the wood. To preserve the natural natural color of the wood, it must be varnished: in this case, the boards will not darken from moisture. Special impregnations guarantee the protection of the fence from pests and rain, since they usually contain insecticides and antifungal agents.

Special impregnations for wood will prevent it from losing color, and will also protect against mold, pests and weather conditions

A wooden fence for a suburban area should be considered not only a way to protect the territory, but also a stylish decorative detail. The natural beauty of the material, emphasized by the stylish form, will make the site even more spectacular, allow a more rational approach to solving landscape problems and rationally organize the space.

Since ancient times, fences have been built in Russia. They were mostly wooden. With the advent of new technologies, materials such as metal, reinforced concrete, polycarbonate, corrugated board, brick are increasingly replacing an aesthetic, but not so durable wooden fence from our life. Whoever prefers environmentally friendly materials, creates a rustic-style design on his site or already has a wooden house, chooses a wooden fence. In addition, if you study the issue in detail, then you will see how many wood fences differ. They can be one of the most impressive elements in your site design.

Types of wooden fences

By a wooden fence, we often mean an ordinary picket fence, to which people have long been accustomed and which was quite common in Soviet times. Over time, the situation has changed dramatically and now wooden fences are a herringbone, and cross, and chess, and a lattice. And an ordinary wooden picket fence looks great, equipped with brick posts.

Classic wooden fence

Pipes are installed along the perimeter of the site, which are concreted into the ground. Between the pillars, veins or girders are attached, made of a bar with dimensions of 50X100 mm or so. Fence boards are nailed perpendicular to the veins, either joint to joint, or at a short distance from each other.

Wooden fence with ladder or herringbone

Similar to the classic fence, the pillars are concreted into the ground. Decorative overlays made of wood are attached to their inner and outer sides. They will become the guides for the rest of the boards. Boards measuring 25X100mm are laid in the grooves between the plates - horizontally overlapping. If you use calibrated pads, you can create a blown fence. And additional thin vertical metal stakes allow you to create another type of such a fence.

The columns of the fence are covered with decorative wooden covers.

Fence "Cross"

It is possible to combine a wooden fence with reinforced concrete by constructing a Cross fence. The same 60x80 mm columns are installed in concrete-filled holes in the ground. The pillars are equipped with grooves, into which decorative reinforced concrete slabs are first installed (their approximate size is 300x300x550), and then wooden blocks. Both the columns and the fence fabric are covered with decorative covers that prevent moisture from entering the structure.

Staggered fence with clearance

Veins are laid between the pillars. Planks are attached to them in a checkerboard pattern - sometimes from one side or the other. If you look from the side, then the fence turns out to be not "deaf", but with gaps.

Fence "Lattice"

The base and supporting elements for this type of fence are similar - pillars. Between them, ready-made lattice sections are installed, knocked out of rails. The slats can be located both parallel and perpendicular to the posts, and diagonally. Such a fence is enlightened, lets the sun through, does not close the space. Its function is more decorative.

Fence "Rancho"

This is a fence, when 2-4 wide boards are mounted horizontally on heavy wooden posts with small gaps. If you take well-processed thin boards and a little more of them, then you can build a beautiful fence for a wooden house.

Fence "Palisade"

Treated, smooth, not too large in diameter logs are set vertically to each other.

If you install the pillars and the entire structure on the foundation, this will save the lower part from interacting with the ground and moisture, and, therefore, will significantly extend the service life of the fence. As supports for the fence, metal pipes, concreted into the ground, pillars of stone or brick, ready-made reinforced concrete pillars or wooden logs can act.

Materials for the construction of the fence

The cost of a wooden fence depends on its type and what material will be chosen: board, picket fence, beams, logs (for a picket fence). Also from the materials you will need: crossbars (wooden or metal), support pillars, reinforcement for formwork, cement, sand, brick and stones for the construction of pillars, nails and screws, fire retardant and antiseptic impregnation for wooden surfaces, bitumen or creazote for processing installed in the support or strip foundation of wooden posts.

Tools

To build a fence, stock up on the following tools:

  • drill or shovel
  • roulette
  • stakes
  • level
  • screwdriver
  • hammer
  • jigsaw
  • brush
  • sandpaper

How to make a wooden fence?

Before you make a wooden fence with your own hands, you need to decide on its design and how much capital construction is planned. For a fence with a foundation, the sequence of actions will be as follows:

  • markup;
  • foundation construction;
  • installation of pillars;
  • fastening of wooden elements;
  • processing of wooden surfaces.

Markup

The markings for the future fence are carried out using a tape measure and a rope. Determine the place for placing the wicket and gate. In the corners of the site, we set it in pillars. We pull the lacing between them so as not to deviate from the set line when determining the locations for the location of the pillars.

Foundation

The most laborious thing in the process of constructing a wooden fence with your own hands is filling the strip foundation. Under a light wooden fence, the foundation is not particularly deepened. To do this, a trench is dug (depth up to 1 meter, width - 30-80 cm), deep into which a sand cushion is poured. Next, they knit the reinforcement, create the formwork, set the pillars at the level and fill the foundation. It can be either at zero level or higher - 30-50 cm above ground level. After it hardens (after 2-3 days), proceed to further work.

Installation of pillars

The more often the posts stand, the stronger the fence will be. The pillars are installed in the process of pouring concrete into the foundation. The distance between them is about 2 m. The fewer the posts, the more crossbeams there should be. If the foundation is not planned, then in the places determined for the placement of the pillars, holes are dug out with a depth of 1-1.5 m, sand (20 cm) is poured into them and abundantly watered with water. Next, using a level, pillars are installed in them and the recesses are poured with concrete.

Normal fence foundation

Foundation using stones

If the post is made of wood, then its lower edge is treated with bitumen or creosote to protect the wood from moisture and decay.

If brick racks are planned instead of pillars, then a place must be provided for them. After all, they will occupy square areas with a side of 1.5 bricks. To decorate the rack at the very bottom and at the top, the masonry is expanded by a quarter of a brick. In the process of laying, crossbars are mounted in the racks. It is important to use a level to check if the rack is level.

Fence installation

Next, a wooden fence is installed. Slats, boards are attached either to the crossbars, or installed in grooves - depending on the selected type of fence. A simpler option is to install sections. If the pillars are wooden, then grooves are made in them for laying the crossbars, if the pillars are metal, then fasteners (corner) are welded to them, to which the slugs will then be attached.

How to extend the life of your fence?

In order for the wooden fence to serve for a long time, wooden elements must be covered with antiseptic solutions and fire retardants, and only then with paint (oil and water-soluble ones are used), stain, varnish. Impregnations are applied even before the installation of the fence. Fire retardant impregnations will prevent fire, and antiseptics will protect the wood from microorganisms settling in it and subsequent rotting. They extend the service life of the fence up to 30 years, protect the wood from the sun and moisture, retain its natural texture and beautiful appearance.

The fasteners are galvanized. Before hammering in a nail, it is immersed in drying oil.

In the future, periodically, at least once every 2-3 years, the wooden fence must be treated with protective impregnations.

Original wooden fences with your own hands - photo:

A metal picket fence is an original, reliable and durable fence. The metal picket fence has a more effective design. Fences made of euro shtaketnik are an excellent choice for an affordable price.

Wooden fences have become rare fences even for an ordinary village house. Meanwhile, making it with your own hands is easy.

The craze for professional sheet fences has a practical explanation: affordable material, fast construction, long service life, low price. As a modern material, profiled sheet has burst into the construction market and significantly displaced traditional wood.

Today it is undeservedly forgotten. But this is a natural material, beautiful, lightweight, durable, from which you can make a unique fence. It is enough to make a little effort - and a wooden fence will decorate your site, enable plants to develop in natural conditions, and not "burn out" in the heat near metal fences.

So, the advantages of a wooden fence:

  • The beauty of natural wood
  • Ease
  • Durability
  • Environmental friendliness.

Types of wooden fence

Amateurs do not stop at the traditional version of vertical picket fence on wooden posts. This method, although it has the right to life, is being supplanted by more modern and beautiful designs. Let's consider a few of them, let's go from simple to complex:

  1. Narrow picket fence on wooden posts. The classic, simplest and cheapest option for a house fencing. A beam for pillars (15 by 15 centimeters), a bar for veins (4 by 4 centimeters), gravel for filling holes, slats, screws or nails are involved in the construction. A classic design can be given originality by changing the gap between the rails of the picket fence, its height, painting to imitate valuable wood species.
  2. Wide figured picket fence on a metal frame. A more reliable option that extends the service of the fence.
  3. Horizontally installed planed board on metal or brick supports. It involves the creation of solid fences. The fence can be made in the style of "lattice", "herringbone", "cross", "ladder". A new-fashioned trend in the construction of wooden fences.
  4. Wooden wattle from a planed board, located vertically or horizontally.
  5. Ranch-style fences are used to fence off huge backyards in rural areas. A practical and cheap option.

Construction stages

The beauty and durability of a fence depends on the quality of the wood. You can buy a ready-made picket fence, but there is a danger of "running into" the raw material. Your efforts to make a fence from such a picket fence will go down the drain: it will "lead" in the first year of operation. We advise you to order a picket fence from a planed board. Treat it according to all the rules and get a wonderful result.

Minimal effort is required to make a frame in wood. The pillars are buried at least 40-50 centimeters, a gravel pad is arranged, on which the pillars are vertically installed, their lower part is treated with bitumen and covered with roofing material. Using bolts or self-tapping screws, two parallel horizontal veins are installed, to which the picket fence will subsequently be attached.

A more durable frame is made of profiled pipes of square or rectangular cross-section. The supports are buried in the ground by one and a half meters, concreted. The horizontal rails are welded to the posts. The metal is descaled and painted.

And, finally, the most difficult and reliable option for creating a frame for a wooden fence is with a monolithic foundation and a plinth on metal or brick supports. A trench is being prepared for a monolithic foundation, formwork. After the foundation has hardened, a plinth of facing brick or natural stone is removed, which go well with wood.

We prepare wooden fencing elements

We agreed that it will be a material planed on both sides, so it will not be difficult to treat it with antiseptic impregnation without preliminary surface preparation. After the slats have dried, apply a primer.

The last stage is painting the wood with pigmented impregnations, glazing compounds or covering. The end part of the picket fence should be well cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper and also carefully processed. The zealous owner applies the paint in several layers in order to protect the tree as best as possible, and save himself from painting work for the next 8 to 10 years.

As you can use varnish coating, stains of various colors. You can burn wood with a special lamp.

Attention! Processing and painting of a wooden picket fence should be carried out before its installation. If you install raw fence elements and then start painting them, the end pieces will be difficult to reach and poorly finished.

Installation of the fence

A classic example is the vertical installation of fence rails with a gap equal to the width of the picket fence. Installation can be done in two ways. In the first case, you attach each batten to the veins with a level. In the second, you first assemble the section on a horizontal surface, and then connect it in whole blocks with a support.

Features of the fence installation in the style of "cross", "herringbone" and "ladder" - there are special vertical overlays on the posts, where grooves are made for horizontal fastening of narrow planed boards. The linings can be made of wood or metal profiles.

A variation of the vertically installed picket fence is the "chess" style - the picket fence is fastened alternately on the front and back sides. For this, the same overlays are used as when installing the "ladder" fence. With the help of the "checkerboard" you can create a blank canvas or make small gaps between the planks. The effect is stunning: at a certain angle, the fence seems deaf, but once you look at the fence from the side, the beauty of your site will open to the eyes of a passer-by.

The "ranch" style is an analogue of the Russian "paddock", it is very simple and cheap in execution: wide boards (poles) are horizontally attached to massive posts. Large lands should be surrounded by such a fence.

The wooden wattle fence is made in the style of folk traditions, only narrow wooden boards are intertwined instead of a flexible vine. The length of the board should correspond to the distance between the posts. Such a fence has the same seamy side and front side. Can be used as a support for climbing plants.

When making a wooden fence with your own hands, pay attention to the important details that will help to perfectly make your dream come true:

  1. For structural strength, install vertical pillars in the ground on special shoes to increase the support area - no "windage" to the fence will be scary!
  2. The distance between the posts should not exceed three meters. Experts believe that 2.5 meters between the supports is optimal.
  3. When installing a picket fence, do not rely on your "sharp eye" - work with the level, constantly checking the accuracy in all planes
  4. Once you have purchased wood, treat it immediately against pests. A grinder beetle can start there in a very short time - it will no longer be possible to improve the structure of the tree with the help of antiseptics.
  5. Pay special attention to protecting the wooden fence from the sun and precipitation. Take care of the choice of paint and impregnation in advance.
  6. You can only paint dry wood (moisture content no more than 12 percent).
  7. We do not recommend using oil paints and enamels to paint a wooden fence. They have the property of cracking and crumbling under the influence of unfavorable factors.
  8. For hardware, use galvanized metal fasteners that are not susceptible to rust.
  9. When attaching the picket fence, make sure that the screws enter the tree strictly perpendicularly, without damaging the tree.

Follow these simple tips, and you can independently build a beautiful and durable wooden fence on your site.
