Setting up a chainsaw carburetor with your own hands

For an independent carburetor option, you need to familiarize yourself with its device and understand the procedure for the work that is carried out to adjust the parts responsible for the correct functioning of the components of the device and parts close to it.

It is necessary to carefully handle the items for the system option, and also determine the compliance of the set characteristics with very acceptable values.

About the carburetor device

The carburetor serves to mix the combustible mixture with air, subject to predetermined proportions. If clear doses are not observed, the correct operation of the motor is at risk. When a huge amount of air enters during mixing, and there is not enough fuel, then such a mixture is considered "poor".

Oversaturation should not be allowed, because with a large amount of fuel compared to air, malfunctions or engine wear are also likely. Carburetor adjustment is needed not only before the initial implementation, but also when any differences in its operation are detected. Before working with a chainsaw, do not forget to break it in.

Components of a carburetor

The design of the carburetor contains a standard set of parts, but may vary little depending on the manufacturer. Components:

  1. The basis. This is a special tube that visually resembles an aerodynamic design. Air passes through it. A damper is located in the transverse direction in the middle of the pipe. It is only necessary to flush the chainsaw carburetor or clean it when it is removed and disassembled. How to set up a carburetor using the Ural chainsaw as an example. How to adjust. The more it is extended into the passage, the less air enters the engine.
  2. Diffuser. This is the narrowed part of the tube. With its help, the air supply speed is increased precisely in the segment where the fuel comes from.
  3. Channels for fuel supply. The fuel mixture is contained in the float chamber, then passes into the jet, from which it flows into the atomizer.
  4. float chamber. It is a separate structural element, reminiscent of the shape of the tank. How to repair a carburetor (walbro) on a partner chainsaw carburetor adjustment. What you need to have to set up

Each owner of a carburetor should have the necessary tools to make adjustments to this system. There are three adjustment screws that are located on the body of the device. They have their own markings:

  • L - screw for correcting low speed.
  • H - screw for adjusting high speed.
  • T - regulates idling, in most cases it is used for experiments.

Chainsaw air filter

Before adjusting the carburetor, you need to prepare the device:

  1. The engine warms up, that is, it starts up about 10 minutes before repair, and turns off at the start of work (see how to start a chainsaw).
  2. Check and clean the air filter.
  3. The chain is stopped by turning screw T as far as it will go (see chain oil).

To carry out a safe repair, you need to prepare a flat surface where you can carefully position the device, and turn the chain in the opposite direction. You need a tachometer. It determines the presence of a violation in the operation of the carburetor. When turning the screws, the sound should be perfect and absolutely even. If squealing notes are noticed, then the mixture is oversaturated.

Setting instructions

Carburetor adjustment is divided into two main stages. The first is called basic. It is done with the engine running. The second is performed when the engine is warm.

To complete the carburetor tuning procedure successfully, You need to read the instruction manual beforehand. specific model to identify additional features of device settings.

First stage

The adjustment screws for the highest and lowest speeds should be turned clockwise until the highest resistance is met. The engine turns on at medium speed and it warms up for about 10 minutes. The screw responsible for adjusting the idle speed must move clockwise. It is released only when the engine enters the stable operation mode. It is necessary to check that the chain does not move during this process.

In idle mode, the engine may stall (the reason is here). In this case, you must immediately bring the adjusting screw clockwise to the stop. Sometimes the chain starts to move. In this case, turn the adjusting screw in the opposite direction.

Checking the operation of acceleration

You need to do a little research. Device acceleration is initiated. It is necessary to evaluate the serviceability of the engine during the maximum speed. we will carry out the replacement on a Chinese chainsaw, they are also called gypsy, since the gypsies sold them in the hundreds. How to adjust correctly You can only adjust the ignition on a chainsaw. When the engine is running correctly, when you press the accelerator, the speed quickly increases to 15,000 rpm.

If this does not happen or the increase in speed is too slow, the screw marked L must be used. It turns counterclockwise. How to adjust the carburetor on a Chinese chainsaw. Moderate movements must be observed, since the turn cannot be more than 1/8 of a full circle.

Max RPM

To limit this figure, you need to use a screw marked H. To increase the number of revolutions, turn it clockwise, and to reduce them in the opposite direction. The maximum frequency should not exceed 15000 rpm.

If this indicator is made larger, the engine of the device will wear out, which will lead to problems in the ignition system. When rotating this screw, the ignition processes of the device must be taken into account. If the slightest failures appear, then the maximum speed value must be reduced.

Final check at idle

Before this procedure, it is necessary to perform a full adjustment of the carburetor components when operating at maximum speed. Next, you should check the operation of the device in idle cold mode. When the correct parameters are reached when adjusting, you can see the exact correspondence of the carburetor design to the following criteria:

    1. When the idle cold mode is connected, the chain does not move.

In this case, the smoke will disappear, but the engine speed will increase. It is necessary to adjust the settings until it reaches a level where, when you press the throttle, the engine smoothly picks up speed, no sharp jerks or interruptions are heard.

  • Checking the engine of the device. The chainsaw is transferred to the minimum speed, and then the lever is pressed rapidly. At the maximum pressing it is maintained for 3 seconds. If there is a malfunction in the engine, you need to gradually loosen the screw until the optimum position is reached.
  • The chainsaw should work for several hours in real conditions. It is necessary to engage in sawing wood, and then inspect all the elements involved in this event. If there are deviations, they must be corrected using adjusting devices. When all defects are eliminated and the optimal settings for supplying correctly concentrated fuel are set, the process of setting up the device can be considered completed.
  • The carburetor in internal combustion engines is responsible for preparing the fuel mixture. It consists of gasoline, air, and oil. When all these ingredients were used in the wrong proportions, the engine will not run normally. To prevent this, it is necessary to adjust the chainsaw carburetor.

The principle of operation of the carburetor

Regardless of the manufacturer of the chainsaw, the procedure and principles of operation of the carburetor remain unchanged. This device consists of several main elements:

    • Converging tube for air supply.
    • Fuel supply system.
    • Adjustable air damper.

Under atmospheric pressure, air after pre-cleaning enters the narrow part of the tube, where its flow rate is controlled by a damper. Also here, the air becomes discharged and the resulting vacuum draws combustible liquid from the fuel line. To adjust the fuel consumption, a special needle is used, connected to the jet chamber. The quality of the fuel mixture is regulated by a damper - when the air is opened, more fuel begins to flow into the carburetor and the power of the power plant increases.

To avoid problems with the operation of the tool, it is necessary to periodically adjust the chainsaw. When too much air enters the mixture, it becomes lean and engine power is reduced. Air deficiency also negatively affects the operation of the unit, as fuel consumption increases. At the same time, it does not burn out completely, which leads to the appearance of carbon deposits on the walls of the cylinders. It is quite obvious that the question of how to adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw is asked by many owners of this tool.

However, first it is worth noting the signs of quality power plant operation:

    • Turnovers are picking up quickly.
    • The sound when the engine is running is similar to a four-stroke.
    • At idle, there is no chain scrolling.

    Situations that require customization

The new tool is already ready for work. In this regard, for some time the question of how to set up a carburetor on a chainsaw will not arise. However, experienced owners of the unit often fine-tune. To do this, it is absolutely not necessary to disassemble the carburetor, because its design provides three adjustment screws:

    • L - used at low speeds.
    • H - allows you to adjust the maximum supply of flammable liquid.
    • T - is necessary for idling adjustment.

All fine-tuning actions are carried out by ear, and at this time it is necessary to adhere to safety rules. Before starting all manipulations, marks should be applied to the adjusting screws so that it is easier to return to the default setting if necessary.

Most often, the problems are caused by the setting, which is carried out after a failure in the operation of the unit. Among the main reasons for their appearance should be noted:

    • Unbalanced screws and violation of the location of the protective cap.
    • Wear of the piston system, which requires changes in the composition of the fuel mixture.
    • Problems with the operation of the carburetor itself.

    Adjustment algorithm

All work on setting up a carburetor chainsaw is carried out in four stages:

And now as much as possible about how to adjust the chainsaw. If the tool does not start, then the adjusting screws H and L must be set to their original position. Then you have to start the engine and let it warm up. After that, you can start adjusting at low speeds. To achieve the optimal operating mode, it is necessary to use the screws L and T.

First of all, through the screw L, you should start the engine at maximum speed, and then release it by ¼. Screw T will allow you to adjust the operation of the power plant at idle. Adjustment traction and maximum speed is performed using screw H, which must be slowly tightened, while monitoring the readings of the electronic tachometer. It is important to remember that the maximum number of revolutions declared by the tool manufacturer must not be exceeded.

Allow the engine to cool down after adjustment. Then it remains to start it in accordance with the algorithm for starting a cold unit. If there are no problems at this time, and the chainsaw works well at idle, you should check it under load. If a lack of power of the power plant is detected, adjustment is made using the screw H.

Almost all Chinese chainsaws are equipped with carburetors, the device of which is similar to European models. Therefore, the differences in the setting will be insignificant - during the initial setting, the screws H and L must be d turn it out two turns. All subsequent actions remain unchanged.

    Checking and adjusting idling.

Finding the highest turnover idle move, to do this, slowly turn the screw L in different directions. After finding the position of the highest engine speed, it is necessary to turn the screw L 1/4 turn counterclockwise. If the chain is spinning at idle speed, screw T or (S) should be turned anti-clockwise until it stops.

Checking and adjusting the maximum speed.

The change in the maximum number of revolutions is carried out by screw H. When it is screwed in (clockwise rotation), the revolutions increase, and when turned out, they decrease. Chainsaw engines have the highest rotational speed of 11500 rpm. up to 15000 rpm. Higher speed does not provide ignition, in addition, it becomes dangerous for the engine. Limit speed can be determined by interruptions in the ignition. If they advance, screw H is turned out a little against clockwise.

If the engine operation is not checked for acceleration and maximum speed, then the adjustment of the chainsaw cannot be considered complete.

With a smooth press on the gas trigger, the engine should confidently and quickly gain momentum from idle to maximum (from 2800 rpm to 11500-15000 rpm, depending on the unit). If the speed is gained slowly, with a delay, screw L must be slowly turned against clockwise, but no more than 1/8 turn.

After adjusting the acceleration and maximum speed, you should again check the operation of the saw at idle - the engine should run stably, the chain should not move. The chainsaw setting must be repeated if this condition is not met but with the exception of the basic adjustment step.

When set up correctly, the chainsaw runs smoothly and should not emit excessive smoke as the engine speed is increased. When the carburetor setting was initially set incorrectly, you will immediately notice clouds of smoke that may be released during operation. Setting up a Chinese chainsaw

The procedure can be challenging. Some models are made following the example of expensive and high-quality models that are produced by famous brands. For this reason, some Chinese counterparts can be seen.

    1. Idle Speed Screw - This adjusts the idle speed of the engine. If it is set too low, the saw will not work. If you set it high, you may run into problems with the chain. This is dangerous!
    2. The low speed adjustment screw is a low speed setting. This is an adjustment that controls the air/fuel mixture at idle. In the first case of incorrect adjustment, the saw will not start at idle. In the second case, engine failure will occur.
    3. High speed adjusting screw. This is an adjustment that controls the air-fuel mixture at high speeds. Incorrect setting leads to high revolutions of the chainsaw.

    Regulation rules

Step 1. Check the fuel level in the fuel tank. This tank should be half full. If there is less fuel, it will make proper carburetor tuning more difficult.

Step 2. Get access to the carburetor. The location may vary depending on the model and manufacturer of your particular chainsaw. Typically, you will need an adjustable wrench and a hex wrench to remove bolts from the chainsaw body. Remove the case. Carburetor adjustment will be done with small screws next to the engine.

Step 3. Start the chainsaw and wait three minutes. This allows the engine to warm up, which is necessary for proper carburetor adjustment.

Step 4 Turn the idle adjustment screw. You will hear the motor spin or slow down as you turn the screw. Set the engine to idle so that it runs at high speed. This will help prevent unintentional engine shutdown.

Step 5. Turn the screw adjustment at low speed. Turn it to one side until the engine starts to run at maximum power. Turn the screw the other way. Pay attention to the two positions of the auger and turn the screw so that it is halfway between these two points. Pull the chain saw a little to check how it works at low speed.

Step 6. Pull the trigger for full chainsaw throttle speed. If the motor runs normally, the full speed screw is set correctly. If the engine stalls, adjust the screw and pull the trigger again. Repeat until the full speed of the chainsaw is smooth.

Step 7 Attach the chainsaw body back.

The carburetor setting of a Chinese chainsaw affects the operation of the tool. If you notice a difference in chainsaw performance, or if it starts to run rough, tuning may help. While newer fixtures are designed to prevent adjustment by anyone other than a licensed professional, older models feature handy screws for quick adjustments.

Adjusting the high speed adjusting screw not only affects the output power, but also the high rotation speed. If the screw is turned too far clockwise, the allowed frequency of operation will be exceeded. This can lead to engine damage caused by lack of lubrication and overheating in particular. Adjustments to the high speed adjuster screw setting can only be made if an accurate tachometer is available to check the maximum engine speed of 13,000 rpm (with bar and chain properly tensioned).

When the engine is checked at the factory, the carburetor is set to get a rich mixture to ensure that the cylinder bore and bearings receive additional lubrication during the period of operation. The high speed adjusting screw can be turned no more than 1/4 turn clockwise.

Do you own a Husqvarna 137 branded chainsaw? Then check out a similar article about.

Warning! The maximum permissible engine speed must not be exceeded! Please note that even minor changes to the adjusting screws have a noticeable effect on the behavior of the engine.

    Video: Chinese chainsaw adjustment

A chainsaw is a complex unit, the operation of which is based on a two-stroke type internal combustion engine. For the operation of the internal combustion engine, the use of a carburetor is required. In this mechanism, fuel is mixed with air, and this mixture is fed into the engine cylinder for combustion. The operation of the internal combustion engine largely depends on the carburetor, which needs periodic adjustment. Chainsaw carburetor adjustment can be done by hand, but for this you will need to know the instructions that are described below.

    Chainsaw carburetor design

A carburetor is a device in which fuel is mixed with air, and this mixture is supplied to the cylinder for combustion. During combustion, a crankshaft is driven, to which a drive sprocket is connected to actuate the saw chain. The absence or malfunction of the mechanism in question will lead to the inoperability of the tool, so it is important that the device is serviceable and adjusted.

The design of the chainsaw carburetor consists of the following components:

    • One-piece cast aluminum alloy housing. The use of aluminum for the manufacture of this mechanism helps to lighten the weight of the tool
    • Air diffuser located on the side of the mechanism inlet
    • Jets - valves that serve to regulate the flow of the mixture
    • Atomizer - a device from which the fuel mixture enters the combustion chamber of the cylinder
    • Float chamber - a device for creating and maintaining a certain level of fuel

A detailed diagram of the design of the device in question is shown in the photo below.

Setting up a chainsaw carburetor is an important step that every sawyer has to deal with. The chainsaw needs to be adjusted not only after purchase, but also in the following cases:

    • Before tool break-in. How to set up the mechanism for proper running-in of a chainsaw is described in detail
    • After the end of the rolling process
    • After the engine overhaul
    • During the operation of the tool, when malfunctions occur during operation and start of the motor

At the base of the mechanism there are 3 adjustment screws (on some Chinese models 2 screws), which are a control panel for the user. It is with the help of these screws that the chainsaw carburetor is adjusted independently and quickly. You can adjust an important tool assembly even in the field, without resorting to the help of specialists.

How does a chainsaw carburetor work - the principle of operation

The operation of the unit in question, despite its complex design, is simple and understandable even for beginners. The principle of operation is based on the following actions:

    1. As soon as the ICE engine starts, the air damper opens
    2. In the area of the constriction of the diffuser 16, the flow of incoming air is accelerated, which is mixed with the gasoline-oil mixture
    3. The gasoline-oil mixture is supplied through the jets numbered 15 and 12, and the air, before passing through the damper 7, passes through the filter located in front of the inlet
    4. Damper 8 is located behind the diffuser, and serves to regulate the amount of mixture supplied to the combustion chamber
    5. Screws 17 and 10 adjust the volume of gasoline that passes through the jets. On the carburetor control panel, these screws are labeled L and H
    6. The needle valve 11 regulates the volume of the fuel mixture in the float chamber 14. To adjust the position of the needle valve, a membrane 13 is installed in the mechanism
    7. Another membrane 4 is responsible for supplying fuel to the combustion chamber of the cylinder. The position of this membrane depends on the number of revolutions of the internal combustion engine.
    8. A fine filter is used to clean the gasoline-oil mixture.

The simple principle of operation of the carburetor ensures the smooth operation of the internal combustion engine. The quality of the setting determines how the tool will behave at idle and during operation. The mechanism under consideration has a direct impact on the performance of the entire tool. The service life of the tool depends on the quality of the adjustment.

Adjustment of the carburetor air-fuel mixture supply mechanism - when it is needed

The first adjustment of the chainsaw carburetor is carried out immediately after purchasing a new tool. This is done in order to break in the tool motor. To run-in the internal combustion engine of a chainsaw, it is necessary to limit the maximum speed, which is done with the help of tuning screws. As soon as the break-in is completed, which lasts 2-3 tanks of burnt fuel, it is necessary to re-adjust, but only now in order to establish the maximum speed.

In addition to running in, chainsaw carburetors are tuned for:

    1. Knocking down the settings set after the break-in
    2. If the engine does not start well
    3. If the engine does not develop speed or when you press the gas, the chainsaw stalls
    4. Wear of the piston group, but only in this case, adjusting the chainsaw carburetor is a temporary measure, since the internal combustion engine needs a major overhaul
    5. If the engine does not idle
    6. Machine vibration
    7. The presence of soot on the spark plug
    8. Increased fuel consumption. You can detect this phenomenon by an excess amount of smoke. If you unscrew the candle, it will have a black color with soot

Many malfunctions during the operation of a gasoline unit occur precisely because of the incorrect setting of the chainsaw carburetor or when they are knocked down. To restore the previous performance of the tool, you will need to adjust the mechanism. Many beginners trust this process to specialists, for which the masters take a lot of money. It's time to deal with the adjustment, and carry it out yourself, since this process does not require disassembly of the mechanism.

It is interesting! The carburetor needs not only tuning procedures, but also flushing when dirt gets inside. Flushing involves disassembling the mechanism, and cleaning each part in gasoline or kerosene. However, such a procedure is carried out no more than once every 3-5 years, which depends on the development of the instrument.

    Chainsaw carburetor adjustment instructions

Setting up a chainsaw carburetor begins with a preparation procedure. The basis of preparation includes the following actions:

    • Check the air and fuel filter for contaminants, and if any, these elements need to be cleaned
    • Check for membrane damage
    • Needle valve health
    • Lack of air leakage, which can occur due to leaky oil seals, gaskets and seals

After making sure that the carburetor is working, you can adjust it yourself. It is possible to restore the mechanism to its factory settings, but this is not always necessary. Instructions on how to adjust the carburetor on Stihl, Husqvarna, Makita, Dolmar, Champion, Sadko and others chainsaws are described below. Initially, we find out what each screw in the mechanism device is intended for:

    1. Screw H - the main jet, which is responsible for setting the maximum number of revolutions of the tool
    2. Screw L - jet XX, which is needed to set low idle
    3. Screw LA or S or T - increase and decrease the amount of mixture supplied to the cylinder

It is interesting! There are mechanisms on which there are two or even one adjusting screw, which is called LD for air supply (on Stihl 180 and 170 chainsaws). This is done in order to simplify the process of adjusting the chainsaw carburetor in an unprofessional way.

Each type of tool of the brands Stihl, Husqvarna, Makita, Dolmar, Partner is accompanied by an instruction in which there is a section where this process is described in detail. It does not hurt if before setting up, you find the instructions, and read it before turning the screws.

Preparation for setting up a chainsaw carburetor includes the following manipulations:

    1. Do-it-yourself chainsaw installation on a flat surface. It is also recommended to fix the tool so that it does not move when acting on the screws with a screwdriver.
    2. Point the tire away from you
    3. Ensure a safe distance for others, as the chainsaw carburetor is adjusted with the engine running
    4. It is not necessary to remove the carburetor from the unit to set it up.

The process of setting up the chainsaw mechanism:

    1. Warm up the engine by letting it run for 10 minutes
    2. Find the location of the screw L and use a screwdriver to rotate it in one direction and the other. When rotating with the engine running, there will be an increase in speed (the engine will run louder) and a decrease (when rotating in the other direction)
    3. We determine the optimal value of revolutions, which should be 1.5-2 thousand revolutions. It will be problematic for a beginner to determine the speed by ear, so you can connect a tachometer. Details on connecting and using a tachometer are described
    4. After choosing the optimal speed value, you need to turn the screw L by 1/8 or ¼ of a turn (indicated in the documentation for the unit) counterclockwise, and press the accelerator button. If the engine responds instantly and evenly, that is, it picks up speed quickly, then you can continue the procedure. If dips are found, then the speed should be reduced, and the accelerator test should be repeated again.
    5. If after these manipulations the chain on the unit does not move, then you need to smoothly start turning the screw T or S clockwise. Move the screw clockwise until the chain begins to move
    6. As soon as the chain begins to move along the bar, you need to tighten the screw T or S back a quarter of a turn
    7. The chain must then stop. If it continues to move, then screw S should also be tightened. Ideally, the chain should not move at idle speed of the unit
    8. A motor with a tuned carburetor should run evenly, and when you press the gas button, the speed should increase sharply. If the motor runs unevenly, you need to repeat the setting from screw L by turning it 1/8 turn counterclockwise. After that, the process of moving the screw S is repeated, on which the chainsaw carburetor adjustment is completed

This is not the end of the regulation process, but the tool can already be tested in action. For beginners and inexperienced sawers, it is recommended to complete the setup process at this point. For more precise adjustment of the chainsaw carburetor, you need to adjust the maximum speed. Let's start adjusting the screw H for experienced sawyers:

    1. We determine the enrichment of the mixture by the exhaust. To do this, we develop the speed to the maximum, and look at the nature of the exhaust. The presence of bluish smoke and strong vibration of the tool indicates excessive enrichment of the mixture.
    2. The tachometer (if connected) will show a large number of revolutions - more than stated in the specifications
    3. To reduce the maximum speed, you need to move the screw H a few turns counterclockwise
    4. The maximum speed is checked again, and the process is repeated again if necessary.

It is interesting! You can determine the lean mixture by signs such as squealing of the engine, its rapid heating, misfiring and detonation. It is impossible to allow a lean mixture, as it will lead to a quick failure of the cylinder-piston group.

You can verify that the tool is configured correctly by the following signs:

    1. Chain does not move at idle
    2. The engine works like a four-stroke engine
    3. When you press the throttle stick, the motor responds quickly and speeds up

To make the most accurate setting, you will need to use a wired or wireless tachometer.

On the Stihl 170 and 180 chainsaw, the process of setting up the chainsaw carburetor looks somewhat simpler, since there is only one screw. A detailed description of the process of adjusting the carburetor on the Stihl MS180 chainsaw is presented in the video.

How to adjust the carburetor on a Chinese tool

Let's figure out how to properly adjust the carburetor on a Chinese chainsaw of different brands. The principle of setting is similar to that described in the material above. First you need to inspect the tool, and identify the presence of adjusting screws. Usually the T screw is at the top and the L and H screws are at the bottom. Access to these screws does not always require removal of the protective cover or shroud.

If the Chinese chainsaw has a different number of screws, then based on their number, you need to make the appropriate settings. The device and principle of operation of all chainsaws of different brands and manufacturers are approximately the same, therefore, there will be no problems with adjustment.

It is always easy to do any new job, even if there is an instruction, so do not be afraid to take on the setting.
