New biographies of classic Marvel superheroes. The collection consists of six stories: about Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Hulk, Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider.

Marvel mythos
Genre: superhero
Writer: Paul Jenkins
Painter: Paolo Rivera
Released original: 2006–2008
Publisher: Parallel Comics, 2016

In order for the modern reader to show interest in stories invented half a century ago, sometimes they have to be, if not completely reworked, then at least freshly presented. Marvel survivors of the difficult 90s know this firsthand. At the turn of the century, they created an alternate universe, Ultimate, with young versions of most popular characters. The project turned out to be successful, but the creators did not forget the former universe.

In 2006, the Mythos series was launched, designed to remind readers where it all began and to update the stories of the main characters in Marvel, but not in the same radical way as in the Ultimate comics. Writer Paul Jenkins (creator of the superhero Sentinel and writer of the Inhumans and Spider-Man series) and artist Paolo Rivera were invited to work on it.

Rivera's style is well recognizable: it seems that the frames are not drawn, but painted on canvas. There is no particular dynamics in them, but the comic only benefits from this. Drawings are well suited to the pace of the story; they, one might say, do not rush the narrator.

Jenkins' challenge was not trivial: to preserve the "vintage" spirit of the early adventures of Captain America, the Hulk, the X-Men, introduce new elements that distinguish the retelling from the original, and fill the space between comics and heterogeneous films that had time to come out. The changes were partly successful. Bruce Banner was made a neurotic genius, whose imbalance gave rise to the Hulk, Magneto destroys the enterprise where experiments were carried out on mutants and kills his employees by pumping hemoglobin out of their blood, Spider-Man grimaces on the Conan O'Brian show. This, of course, could not have happened in the original stories. However, these are not the elements that are capable of striking.

The choice of characters also raises questions: What is Ghost Rider doing in the company of Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four? Why not Iron Man or Daredevil, invented, like most of the characters in the collection, by Stan Lee?

The Russian edition, which can be called belated, was not spared from these questions either. Would it be interesting to read again how a radioactive spider bites Peter Parker's nerd, to someone who has already seen at least one movie or series? Given the popularity of Iron Man in recent times, a potential reader is more likely to want to read the story about him - and not find it.

The collection will look good on the shelf with other Marvel comics. High-quality printing, dust jacket, concept art, poster - a collector, including a beginner, is in love with it. But how often will it be taken from the shelf to read? Most likely no.

M arvel comics (Marvel comics) - one of the most popular American comic book publishers. The company was founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman, an American publisher who at the beginning of its development entered the group of subsidiaries "Timely Comics". The very first comic that was invented and released by the company in 1939 was the magazine "Marvel Comics # 1" (eng. Marvel Comics). The main character in it was an android which was invented and painted by the artist Carl Burgos "Human-Torch". The role of the villain was invented and drawn by Bill Everett, the mutant Namor The Sub-Mariner. The magazine became so popular with its readers that the company was forced to seek additional funding from Funnies Inc to meet the demand.

The company appoints its first editor-in-chief Joe Simon, a renowned writer and artist. And already in March 1941, with the support of Jack Kirby, he created and released his first comic "Captain America Comics # 1", the first invented patriotic hero of the country plays the role of a superhero. The captain won the hearts of readers from the first issue. The series about Stephen Rogers (Captain America) continues to be released to this day.

Along with the popular superheroes, several notable comic book series are being released, some of which are still being released: Yula, Ms. America, Destroyer ), "Angel" and others.

The editorial products became very popular and Goodman expanded the company. Writer Stanley Martin Lieber joins her staff, who 20 years later becomes a famous writer, actor, screenwriter, editor under the pseudonym Stan Lee. Together with various artists, including Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he creates the most popular superheroes in the Marvel comics: Spider-Man, Iron Man. Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Ant-man , "Daredevil", "Thor" and "Avengers".

Throughout its existence, Marvel has been constantly fighting for leadership in the comic book industry with such a giant as DC comics. In different years, the popularity of companies constantly alternates. In the 90s, several artists left the company at once whose works kept the company at the peak of popularity: Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Mark Silvestri. Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino and William Portacio found their own Image publishing house. This becomes a big blow to the company.

In 2000, the publishing house launches new series, which allows it to avoid bankruptcy. And on August 31, 2009, the company was bought by Disney for $ 4.24 billion. This purchase helped save all the Marvel comics characters.

After a very successful first release, the decision was made to continue printing similar products. Unfortunately, the company could not cope with financial difficulties on its own and had to turn to sponsors for help. Due to the huge success of the first comic series, finding them was easy enough.

It took almost two years to create the very first known hero to date. In 1941, a comic strip was released, the main character of which was Captain America. This hero was intended to show the patriotic mood of the company, thereby securing the approval of the government. In addition, with the help of this character, the artists were able to show all the most positive qualities of the inhabitants of the United States of America.

The company experienced the most difficult time in the first years after the war. Unfortunately for many, they realized that all the super abilities of people are just a figment of someone's imagination and cannot help in real problems. The fashion for comics has practically died out and the creators had to try hard to again win the love and recognition of the public. The heroes from " Fantastic Four"That appeared after creation by competitors" Justice league «.
