Viareggio is the best place for family holidays
For everyone who wants to escape from the big city, but does not like loneliness, Italian Viareggio is the right place! :) The small size of the city itself is compensated by large beaches, where you will certainly meet both families of German tourists and Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, British and Swedes. The warm sea, hot Italian conversations with violent gestures, cold beer to the freshest pizza - all this made my stay here unforgettable!
And there are also a lot of cafes, restaurants, bistros - during a siesta you can sit inside them, and in the evening clients pour out into the street in comfortable chairs. And the breeze ... As soon as the breeze blows a little from the sea side - the impression is that rain is drizzling from the cloudless sky :) At first I was surprised, but then I got used to it.
There are no separate historical sites - the WHOLE city is an exceptional attraction! The most beautiful landscapes intertwine with the views of modern villas, the beach talk turns into echoes of noisy Italians. Many families with children of different ages come here for two or three years in a row and their children also begin to gesture vividly when talking, imitating the locals! :) Yes. This place is capable of "infecting" with its many-sidedness, polyphony, from which one does not want to rest!
Despite the fact that Viareggio is a small town, you can have a good rest in it with children. First, the sandy beaches are excellent. Secondly, there are many playgrounds for children located right next to the beaches. There is also a submarine-themed museum with various interesting exhibits. Also, the whole family can go to the park and feed the ducks in the pond. And, of course, all children will love the amusement park, where there are many attractions and a Ferris wheel.
What to take with you on vacation?
I need to bring a beach towel, flip flops and comfortable shoes. A panama hat or cap and sunglasses are also useful. A beach umbrella can be purchased locally. And since at this time there is a lot of solar activity, it is very easy to get burned, you need to take funds from the sun.
Where is the best place to stay?
Right on the waterfront there is a huge number of hotels and hotels for every budget. Prices start at about 30 euros. Although it can be difficult to find a room at an affordable price during the season, as it is a very popular resort with locals and tourists alike. Many people come here from neighboring cities - Florence, Pisa, Lucca and others.
Another option is to settle not in Viareggio itself, but somewhere nearby. For example, in the same Pisa to see local attractions. It's easy to get there. Holidays in Viareggio
If everything is in order with the elite new building in Viareggio, then the tension with the architectural sights. And the city itself, unlike most small Italian resorts, does not have the status of a former maritime republic or an ancient Roman trade center. Everything is much more prosaic - a small fishing village was that way until the end of the 18th century, when weary wealthy residents began to come there and - to take refuge from worldly worries behind the Apuan Alps and pine groves. Moreover, the mention of Viareggio - which is not typical for an old Italian woman - can be found for the first time only in the annals of the 15th century. Residents - another fashionable town located nearby - have erected a watchtower with the same name: "Via Reggio". Later, a small trading port arose here: the mouth of the Burlamakka River was a suitable point for loading and unloading ships. With the development of shipbuilding, the affairs of the tiny settlement went well - a convenient descent to the water became the main reason why several shipyards appeared here at once. This is how Viareggio appeared: a port, a small town, especially the stars from the sky were missing. And there was no need for him - several centuries passed, and the stars began to come here on their own.

Italians themselves choose Viareggio as their destination - is it not a recommendation for foreign guests who want to have a great vacation? Let's agree with the Apennine "middle class": Viareggio is one of the few places where nerve cells, contrary to the assurances of doctors, really recover. The only problem, as mentioned above, is the almost complete lack of historical sites. Unless the Matilde tower can somehow pass for a medieval miracle. Most of the city's buildings were erected in the Art Nouveau style. The only information known about the development is that a certain Belluomini was developing the city's project. For the Russian ear, this venerable name says little. Like the name of Percy Shelley, an English poet who came here with his wife and friend, the famous Lord Byron. The bust of the first adorns the square of the same name, and tourists of all nationalities look at it with respect. You can also go to see the villa of Napoleon's sister Paolina Borghese, located on Via Machiavelli, 2, the ticket costs 2.5 euros. In general, you will have to forget about long romantic evenings at the foot of monumental ancient abbeys and medieval castles and sublimate them into something else. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities in Viareggio for this. Well, if a creative person cannot spend at least a week without medieval ruins, it is quite possible to get to and: there are more than enough castles, towers and ancient universities.

So, you have arrived in Viareggio. Let's make a reservation right away: it's better to do this not at the very beginning of summer, as the weather may be unstable. For starters, you can lie on the beach, the entrance to each of which, by the way, is paid. But there is a reason: almost everyone has a special insignia - the "blue flag", confirming the cleanliness and high level of service. The cost is 15-20 euros per day for a beach "gentleman's set": an umbrella, two sun loungers and an armchair, plus the opportunity to use the shower, changing room and toilet. However, there were rumors that some lucky tourists also found municipal beaches - but they were not very happy with the level of service: it was very dirty and crowded. Having survived the morning invasion of sellers of all kinds of trinkets and souvenirs, we begin to enjoy the sea: here it is clean and unusually beautiful. You can get to the beach until 6 pm - after that they are locked. A nautical holiday in Viareggio can be combined with a visit to luxury shipyards that manufacture luxury yachts here for the mighty. For example, the Intermare shipyard - it was here that the famous Majora 38DP was launched. For the uninitiated, a 38-meter miracle walking on turquoise waves with a dining area, game tables, a bar, a relaxation area, a solarium and an office for joint meals.

What to see in Viareggio?
Viareggio, unfortunately for lovers of antique sights, looks like a modern resort town: most of the sights of the Old Town were destroyed during the bombing of the Second World War.
However, do not think that there are no beautiful places in Viareggio that can conquer the traveler with their landscapes. So, let's start our walk through the famous Tuscan town.
City embankment
Promenade Viareggio is a favorite walking spot for locals and tourists alike, and this is not surprising. The promenade, the total length of which is about 3 kilometers, contains elegant cafes and restaurants, taverns and fashionable hotels, boutiques and very interesting (even for those who just love to look at the windows) ateliers of local craftsmen. In addition, it is on the embankment with their windows and facades that the surviving old liberty-style villas, which are Viardégio's hallmark, overlook.

Did you know that it was in this city that the famous Italian composer, Giacomo Puccini, loved to rest. Guests of Viareggio can visit his museum, organized, respectively, in his own villa - Villa Puccini, located near the town, in Torre del Lago.

Torre Matilde

The real symbol of Viareggio is the Tower of Viareggio, better known as Torre Matilde. The name was given to the tower by mistake: a long time ago, historians attributed the fact of the tower's erection to the hands of Princess Matilda Canossa. In fact, the building was built in 1534 after the decision of the rulers of the city of Lucca to protect the city from a raid by robbers. The material used for the construction of the tower was obtained from the ruins of an ancient castle that dominated nearby. Next to the tower, the Palazzo del Comissario was built, connected to the tower by a portico used to announce potential danger. The tower was used as a prison in the nineteenth century. In 1823, when the prison was moved to a different location, the tower was used as a telegraph building for two decades.
After a long period of neglect, the building has now been opened to the public as an exhibition hall for cultural events and exhibitions.

Villa Paolina

Among the most important sights of Viareggio, we note the beautiful residence of Napoleon's sister, Pauline Bonaparte, built in 1882 on the seashore for Pauline and her lover, the musician Giovanni Pacini. The neoclassical residence, erected by the architect Giovanni Lazzarini, at one time hosted famous cultural figures of Italy and Europe: Polina was very fond of music, painting and train travel and often held parties and receptions at the villa.
The interior of the villa is beautiful and unusual: the walls of the residence rooms are painted in various shades of beige, richly decorated with vignettes and bas-reliefs, there is no shortage of valuable canvases by Bonaparte's contemporary artists. There is a garden adjacent to the villa, where Polina used to stage performances in the open space for her guests.

Villa Paolina is currently open to the public. Its halls are home to three important Viareggio museums: the Alberto Carlo Blanc Archaeological Museum, founded in 1974, the Giovanni Ciuffreda Musical Instrument Museum, opened in 1994, and the Lorenzo Viani Art Gallery dedicated to contemporary art.

Created in 1747 with the aim of protecting the city from the cold and strong sea winds, the park has become a real attraction in Viareggio, a place where it is pleasant to stroll, inhaling the coniferous aromas of tall pines. And in the very center of the park, you can admire the graceful white swans living in an artificially created lake. The park is a meeting and walking place for locals and tourists, and various sporting events and concerts are often held here.

Villa Bourbons
The Bourbon Villa is located on the path that connects the city with the Borgo Torre del Lago. The villa was built in 1821, designed by Lorenzo Nottolini for the Duchess Maria Louise of Bourbon.
The villa consists of three buildings, each of which occupies three floors. The central building served as the actual residence, while the other two rooms were equipped for stables and warehouses. The interior of the villa is striking with splendor: the walls and ceilings of the residence are decorated with beautiful frescoes, the floors and stairs are inlaid with precious stones. The residence is located within the magnificent natural park of Migliarino San Rossore - Massaciuccoli. Next to the villa is a small chapel built in 1849 by Charles III of Bourbon.

In 1836, the Duke of Lucca, Charles Louis Bourbon, issued a decree on the construction of a new parish in Viareggio, which would be dedicated to Saint Andrew the First-Called. The cathedral was built in 1842 by the engineer Michele Cervelli from Lucca.
The interior of the church houses interesting works of art and numerous holy relics. The famous Italian priest, ordained a saint, Saint Antonio Maria Pucci, preached in the cathedral and was buried here.
