Akathist to the Most Holy Mother of God in front of the icon “Quick to Hear.” Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of Her icon, called “Quick to Hear” Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos in honor of the icon of the Quick to Hear

Akathist to the Quick Hearer was not originally a genre in Orthodox church chants. This was the name of the specific work that was created - the Great Akathist. The akathist genre became a genre only over time, when other similar chants appeared and many icons of the Mother of God, as well as God’s Saints, were painted. One of the representatives of this genre is the Akathist to the Mother of God Quick to Hear. They read it for the glory of the Virgin Mary and for all worldly needs.

Akathist to the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Quick to Hear

The Akathist to the Mother of God Quick to Hear is a kind of hymn in honor of this icon, which was written in the tenth century. The icon of the Mother of God Quick to Hear is located on Mount Athos in the Dochiar Monastery. This icon is praised and revered by Christians all over the world. The very name of the icon Quick to Hear means that the prayer offered before this most holy image will be heard as soon as possible. By the way, the place where the prayer is offered practically does not matter, that is, it is not necessary to go to the monastery, which is located on the Holy Mountains of Athos, to offer prayer in front of the icon of the Quick Hearer. A written copy of this is available in many Orthodox churches and monasteries. Of course, if you have the strength and finances, you can go on a pilgrimage. It will be a great blessing to pray and read the akathist to the Mother of God Quick to Hear in the Athos monastery in front of the original Orthodox icon.

Akathist to the Mother of God Quick to Hear is read for various needs. Mothers pray for the health of their children, as well as people who find themselves in captivity and at the mercy of force majeure circumstances. Cases of healing of demoniacs were also observed. There is also a known story that one monk was punished with blindness for not listening to the order of the Most Holy Theotokos. It was the refectory Neil, who walked into the refectory with a lit torch, just past the icon of the Mother of God hanging above the door. One day, once again following the usual route, he heard the voice of the Mother of God, who warned not to walk there with a torch because soot would settle on the icon, but he ignored the warning.

Afterwards, Neil prayed for a long time to the Mother of God for forgiveness. The merciful Virgin Mary heard his prayers and his sight returned. Thus, the Mother of God announced to the monk about forgiveness, but commanded him to tell all the brothers about such mercy: From now on, this icon of Mine will be called Quick to Hear, because I will quickly show mercy and fulfillment of petitions to all who come to Me. By praying and reading the Akathist to the Mother of God Quick to Hear, many blind people are being healed even now.

In the same way, You have made Your earthly lot, Mount Athos, inaccessible to women, so that foreigners may dwell in it without the temptation of sin, placing their only hope of salvation in You according to God, and calling to You: Rejoice, unfading flower of virginity; Rejoice, village of purity. Rejoice, luminous heavenly hay, overshadowing the zealots of purity; Rejoice, switch of the wisdom of God, making wise the guardians of chastity. Rejoice, you who strive as a monk and Mediatress of salvation; Rejoice, shelter and protection of the desert dwellers of Mount Athos. Rejoice, you who pour out gracious joy into God-loving hearts; Rejoice, you who give spiritual consolation to distressed souls. Rejoice, nurse of virgins and motherless orphans; Rejoice, thou who delightest the virgin face with the love of the immortal Bridegroom. Rejoice, strong helper in the difficult struggle with the attacks of the carnal passions; Rejoice, vigilant guardian of monastic monasteries. Rejoice, all-merciful One who is quick to hear, who fulfills our requests for good.

Our humble singing, offered to You out of the fullness of love and zeal, do not despise, O Pure One, and do not turn away from us, defiled by many sins, but help us, O All-Blessed One, to be cleansed from the filth of sin by repentance, and to succeed in a pure and God-pleasing life, Your heroic hero and helper in this matter, so that we may worthily and righteously cry out to the Lord: Alleluia.

With the bright rays of miracles, Your holy icon shines unwaveringly, O Virgin Mother of God, and gracefully illuminates the whole world, driving away every enemy action by the power of God emanating from Her; We, sinners, rejoice in the same way, having such a guarantee of Your favor towards us, and to You, Quick to Hear our prayers, we cry out in gratitude: Rejoice, Day of the never-setting sun; Rejoice, dawn of the day without evening. Rejoice, thou who hast dawned upon us the morning of salvation; Rejoice, thou who gave birth to the immortal Bridegroom of human souls. Rejoice, fulfiller of our godly desires; Rejoice, thou who graciously quickest to help us in sorrows and circumstances. Rejoice, mental paradise, filled with all spiritual consolation; Rejoice, who from Your fulfillment sheds drops of consolation upon us. Rejoice, cooling the heat of our passions; Rejoice, grace-filled dispassion to those who seek it, diligently giving it. Rejoice, you who dearly love all who live in purity of chastity; Rejoice, you who visit God’s chosen ones in dreams and visions. Rejoice, all-merciful One who is quick to hear, who fulfills our requests for good.

The grace of God inherent in Your holy icon, the Quick-to-Hear One named by You, the Lady of God, draws to Her all those who mourn and are burdened, and in vain they depart from this source of Your mercies and generosity: in sorrow there is joy, in adversity protection, in illness they endlessly receive healing from the miraculous of Your image, O All-Good One, and cry out in gratitude to the Giver of good things, God: Alleluia.

Singing Your miracles, O Lady, and Your great mercy to the Christian race, we know that we are dissatisfied with the worthy glorification of You, the Most Honest Cherub and the Most Glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, both hoping for Your unconditional mercy, O All-Good One, we humbly offer You these songs: Rejoice, refuge non-stormy ascetics of piety; Rejoice, sweet interlocutor of the silent ones. Rejoice, blessed joy for those who wander in the deserts and mountains; Rejoice, secret admonition to the hidden servants of God among the world. Rejoice, reconciliation of sinners who repent with God; Rejoice, Mount Athos, supreme ruler. Rejoice, you who illuminated the desert-loving Peter here with your visit; Rejoice, Athanasia, who has been blessed here by Your divine appearance. Rejoice, thou who glorified many saints of Athos with heavenly glory; Rejoice, you who sow Your special love to the inhabitant of the mountain. Rejoice, free Healer of our bodies; Rejoice, O guide of our souls to the Kingdom of Heaven. Rejoice, all-merciful One who is quick to hear, who fulfills our requests for good.

O All-Singing Mother, Who was called Quick to Hear in Your holy icon, Theotokos Mary! Mercifully accept this little prayer of ours, offered to You out of our zeal with faith and love, and beg the ever-worshipped Trinity to deliver us from fiery Gehenna, unlighted darkness and eternal torment: that through Your intercession we will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, and we may be worthy, together with the saints, to sing to God: Alleluia.

Icon of the Mother of God, called “Quick to Hear”

The miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” is one of the most ancient icons of the Mother of God. The prototype of the icon is located on Holy Mount Athos, in the Dochiar monastery.

The history of this icon goes back more than a thousand years. According to legend, it was written in the 10th century with the blessing of the founder of the Athonite Dochiara monastery, Venerable Neophytos.

It is believed that the icon is a copy of the revered image of the Mother of God, located in the city of Alexandria. The icon received its name, now known throughout the Orthodox world, later - in the 17th century, when a miracle occurred from it, which is narrated in a monastery legend.

Dochiar is located on the slope of a mountain steeply descending to the sea and is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel (feast day November 8).

According to legend, this monastery was founded in the second half of the 10th century by a certain Euthymius, who, as they say, was a disciple and associate in the hermitage of the Monk Athanasius of Athos and performed the duties of a “dochiar”, i.e. manager of the reserves of olive oil and other food supplies in the Lavra. In honor of his novitiate, Euthymius named the monastery “Dohiar”.

Tradition says that there were no funds to complete the monastery, but by the grace of the Queen of Heaven it was revealed to one boy, a novice of the monastery, how to find these funds: the place on the metokha (i.e., site of the monastery) was indicated where the hidden treasure was located. Metoch was located on the island of Longos opposite Athos. Two monks sent with the boy, tempted, decided to drown the boy with a stone around his neck and take possession of the treasure. But St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel saved the boy and took him to the church of the Dokhiar monastery. The conspiracy was discovered, and the treasures went to their intended destination. As a result of this miracle, the monastery was dedicated to the Ethereal Powers.

(Dohiar Monastery, Holy Mount Athos)

Among the shrines of the monastery in the Cathedral Church is kept the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” (Gorgoepekoos), as well as part of the stone with which the novice was thrown into the sea and miraculously saved (the novice later became an abbot with the name Barnabas).

To the right of the entrance to the refectory, opposite the entrance to the cathedral, is the chapel of the Virgin Mary Quick to Hear.

Chapel of Our Lady of Quick Hearing

The chapel received this name from the miraculous icon of the Mother of God located here, which is considered the best acquisition of the monastery and one of the most famous and revered icons on Mount Athos. Here every year the monastery appoints two hieromonks, i.e. prosmonarii, who receive numerous pilgrims and perform (sometimes one and sometimes the other) psalms in front of the icon of the Mother of God. In addition, these monks accept various kinds of offerings and take care of the cleanliness and other needs of the chapel.

The icon “Quick to Hear” itself was not painted on the wall. It's a fresco! Fresco painted in a niche in the outer wall in front of the entrance to the refectory. But there is also a miraculous copy of it, which is carried out at the religious procession.

Icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hear". Athos Dohiar Monastery

The Dochiar Monastery currently ranks 10th in the series of Athonite monasteries and has 40 monks.

Legend about the icon

In the middle of the 17th century, the monk Nil labored in the Dochiar monastery, fulfilling the obedience of the refector. Each time, entering the refectory, he inadvertently smoked the image of the Mother of God, which hung at the entrance to the refectory, with a torch. One day, as usual, passing by an icon with a flaming torch, the monk Neil heard the words: “For the future, do not come here with a lighted torch and do not smoke My image.” Neil was at first frightened by the human voice, but decided that it was one of the brethren who said it and did not pay attention to the words. He continued to walk past the icon with a lit torch. After some time, the monk Nil again heard the words from the icon: “A monk unworthy of this name! How long have you been so carelessly and so shamelessly smoldering My image?” At these words, the refector suddenly lost his sight. Deep repentance gripped his soul, and he sincerely confessed his sin of irreverent treatment of the image of the Mother of God, recognizing himself as worthy of such punishment. Neil decided not to leave the icon until he received forgiveness of his sins and healing from blindness.

In the morning, the brethren found him lying on his back in front of the holy image. After the monk told him about what happened to him, the monks lit an unquenchable lamp in front of the icon. The offender himself prayed and cried day and night, turning to the Mother of God, so that soon his fervent prayer was heard. A familiar voice told him: "Nile! Your prayer is heard, you are forgiven, and sight is restored to your eyes. Proclaim to all the brethren that I am the cover, providence and protection of their monastery, dedicated to the Archangels. Let them and Orthodox Christians turn to Me in their needs, and I will not leave anyone unheard: I will intercede for all who come running to Me with reverence, and the prayers of all will be fulfilled by the Son and My God for the sake of My intercession before Him. From now on, this icon of mine will be called “Quick to Hear” because I will quickly show mercy to all those who come to it and will soon heed their petitions.” Following these joyful words, Monk Neil’s sight returned. It happened November 9, 1664.

The rumor about the miracle that happened before the icon quickly spread throughout Athos, attracting many monks to worship the shrine. The brethren of the Dochiar monastery blocked the entrance to the refectory in order to thus protect the place where the icon was located. On the right side a temple was built, consecrated in honor of the image of the “Quick to Hear”. At the same time, a particularly reverent hieromonk (prosmonary) was chosen to constantly remain at the icon and perform prayers in front of it. This obedience is still being fulfilled today. Also, on the evening of every Tuesday and Thursday, the entire brethren of the monastery sings a touching canon of the Mother of God before the icon ( in Greek "paraklis"), the priest commemorates all Orthodox Christians in the litany and prays for the peace of the whole world.

The meaning of the image “Quick to Hear”

The Icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” (the history of her glorification), like many other icons, reminds us that the image of the icon must be treated with great reverence, for it embodies the prototype of the face depicted on it. This event reminds us that requests and prayers are expected of us. Prayerful work always bears fruit, but a prayer in front of the icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” or a prayer in difficult moments to the Quick to Hear Herself, this hypostasis of the Mother of God, will be heard and fulfilled, the main thing is that it is lifted up with all the heart and with great and sincere faith that we are heard , they remember us, they will help us. All we can do is pray and believe.

Iconography

The image of the icon of the Mother of God Quick to Hear belongs to the type of Hodegetria - “Guide”. The baby, sitting on the left hand of the Mother of God, blesses with his right hand, and holds a scroll in his left. The icon is characterized by the fact that the right heel of the Divine Infant faces the worshippers. Later, the Mother of God on an icon of this type began to be depicted wearing a crown.

Miracle-working lists “Quick to Hear”

The Icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” is especially revered in Russia thanks to numerous miraculous lists. Many of them became famous for their miracles. Particularly noted were cases of healing from epilepsy and demonic possession.

Lyutikovsky list. One of the first copies of the miraculous icon “Quick to Hear” was the Lyutikovsky copy. In 1872, the peasant Alexander Frolov, a resident of the village of Troitskoye, Kaluga province, went to Athos with the goal of becoming a monk in the St. Andrew or Ilyinsky monastery. From there he sent a parcel to his native church for the priest, which contained a copy of the icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” from the Holy Mountain. In the accompanying note, Frolov asked that the icon be placed in the church, and that money be sent to him to pay for the icon painter’s work. The small village church did not have the required amount and it was decided to transfer the icon to Trinity Lyutikov Monastery(six miles from the city of Przemysl on the banks of the Oka River). On the feast of the Life-Giving Trinity, the icon was transferred to the Lyutikov Monastery, and on the same day several healings took place from the image. Rumors about this spread throughout the surrounding villages and people flocked to the icon. A continuous service of prayers began and after some time the collection reached the amount necessary to pay the icon painter 150 rubles.

Moscow list. The Moscow list of “Quick to Hear” was brought from Mount Athos in 1887 and placed in Athos Chapel in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon at the St. Nicholas Gate of Kitay-Gorod.

Associated with the Moscow list of the Quick to Hear is a legend about the healing on November 14, 1887 of a certain Anastasia Frolova, a widow from Ruza. Frolova suffered from demonic attacks, which occurred on church holidays, as well as on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as during church services and conversations on sacred topics.

Relatives, not knowing how to cure Frolova, advised her to pray at the icon of the Quick Hearer. When a prayer service was served at the icon, Frolova’s suffering stopped.

In January 1889, from this image, the Moscow peasant woman Marfa Stepanovna Palkina received healing from epilepsy, accompanied by fits of demonic possession.

Nevskaya Skoroposlushnitsa. Perhaps the most revered icon of the “Quick to Hear” in all of Russia is the image of the Mother of God, which is now V Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The St. Petersburg copy of the icon, written in the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Athos, became the contribution of Grand Duke Sergius Alexandrovich and his wife Elizaveta Fedorovna to the Nikolo-Bargradsky Church under construction at the corner of Mytninskaya and 2nd Rozhdestvenskaya streets. The holy image remained here from 1879 to 1932, when the church was destroyed.

In its iconography, this icon differs significantly from the famous Athonite image of the “Quick to Hear”. On it, the Mother of God is depicted without the Child, with an outstretched right hand of emphatically large size, as if symbolizing Divine help. It is difficult to say what determined these iconographic changes. Perhaps this was the wish of the royal customers themselves. However, as the legend says, the image was painted “from a dream vision of a monk of the Holy Mountain.” This type of “Quick to Hear” icon is not found either in Greece or in other countries of the Orthodox East, therefore the image is also called “Neva Quick to Hear”.

Very soon the image became famous for its miracles and began to be highly revered by St. Petersburg residents.

The Nevsky Icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” became a particularly revered prayer icon of the Royal House of Romanov. For St. Petersburg, the “Neva Quick to Hear” became the guardian of the city along with such revered icons of the Mother of God as the Kazan, Tsarskoye Selo, and Sorrowful icons with pennies.

Olivet list. In 1938, the Athos monastery of Dokhiar donated a copy of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” to the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem. Currently the list is stored in the right aisle Church of the Ascension of the Savior of the Olivet Convent in Jerusalem.

Other lists. One of the revered copies of the icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear” in Moscow is currently in Church of the Archangel Gabriel of the Antioch Patriarchal Metochion.

In an ancient Russian city Murome The icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear”, painted on Holy Mount Athos in the Russian Monastery of St., became famous for its miracles. Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon and brought in 1878 to Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery.

First of all, in front of the icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear,” they pray for spiritual insight, when a person is at a loss and does not know what to do, in all cases when especially quick and effective help is needed in Her prayer to the Son. Also, the Mother of God, through her icon “Quick to Hear,” gives help in curing various diseases, even cancer. Before Her holy image they offer prayer for children and for help in childbirth - for the birth of a healthy child.

We are strangers and strangers on earth and, according to the words of the Apostle, are not the imams of the city that resides here, but to whom shall we resort, O Lady, in the sorrows of our journey, if not to You, O All-Good One? Do not reject us, Mother of God, do not say to us: “We do not know your sins for your sake!”, but have mercy on us, the orphaned and helpless, and accept us into the eternal shelter of our Patroness, so that we may joyfully cry out in the glory of Heaven to the King of Glory Christ: Alleluia.
