* * *

– I take it we can’t refuse? – the magician in the purple robe inquired displeasedly.

Wharton, the dean of the combat faculty of the Adair Academy of Magicians, leaned back in his chair and, raising an ironic eyebrow, looked at his deputy.

“Since you are so brave, refuse it yourself,” he suggested. Lashel's dissatisfaction was perfectly understandable to him, but Kyrian had already made his decision, so the argument made no sense. “And then, as a student, she wasn’t so bad.” I would even say that of all her classmates, she is one of the most gifted.

“She’s Ethari, Wharton!” And besides, treyche!

“And she’s also a queen,” the dean responded irritably, who was beginning to get tired of this conversation. “We can’t expel her when the entire Wereanter is behind her!” We have no formal reasons for this, so the conversation is over. If it's any consolation, none of the faculty are happy. And she will arrive only in a couple of weeks.

– But we are in Arcadia, not in Vereanter! And, in general, since when did Kirian follow the lead of the arch-vampire?!

“In the end, they managed to stop Arlion Etari,” Vorton recalled. “Kirian felt that after this we have no right to refuse Cordelia Vereanterskaya to continue studying at our academy.

Lashel exhaled noisily, but he had no more arguments, and he turned to the window in irritation. Looking at his deputy, who looked impossible to be more than twenty-five years old and who at that moment looked more like an angry boy than a master of combat magic, Wharton only sighed. He himself was very surprised when a couple of days ago Archmage Kyrian informed him that the new Veranter queen had expressed a desire to continue her studies at the academy - one would think that she had nothing else to do on the throne! - and that he, the rector, agreed. He experienced an even greater shock when he learned that a student of his department, who regularly found trouble on her own head, turned out to be the granddaughter of the notorious archmage Arlion Ethari. However, the news that the student Bathory is actually the treyhe Etari stirred up only the male teachers. The entire female half of the masters have been busy for the last month discussing how some girl without a family without a tribe (And it doesn’t matter that she is a former princess! She’s still illegitimate!) was able to seduce the king and marry him to herself, and what other unmarried royals were left in neighboring countries. The fact that the king is a calculating arch-vampire from whom all sober-minded people with a normal instinct of self-preservation should run without looking back, all these teachers did not care at all. And who will understand these women?..

Lashel continued to contemplate something outside the window, and Wharton, interested in what fascinated him there, got up from the desk in his office and also went to the window. It was the last days of summer, and the academy courtyard was again filled with students returning from vacation. He had already been informed about a couple of duels and one fight without the use of magic between dark and light magicians from different faculties, but now, after a long lull, these familiar skirmishes did not cause the usual irritation.

– What about the faculty of necromancy? – Lashel suddenly asked, finding the strength to switch to another topic. – Who will be the dean now?

Wharton winced as if his teeth suddenly hurt. The difficulty was that the now deceased Thanatos was the only strong and gifted necromancer in the faculty, and finding a replacement for him turned out to be unexpectedly difficult. Those necromancers who taught at the academy were so-so in terms of abilities, only half and half, and none of them were suitable for such a position. Rector Kirian understood this very well and therefore turned to his deputy with a request to contact the Dark Council of Magicians and recommend someone from there. Of course, the Council readily responded - it was always pleased when independent academies and schools of magic turned to them for help - but the candidate they proposed ... inspired certain concerns.

“The Council promised to send Master Lennox,” Wharton finally said reluctantly.

The deputy finally looked away from the window and stared at it in amazement, shaking his head so fast that the mantar claw in his long earring began to shake.

- Lennox?! Are they kidding me?

Wharton shrugged his broad shoulders vaguely, and Lashel, looking at the boss for a few seconds, was convinced that he was not joking. What a day! Not only will Etari study at their academy, but also this!

- He's crazy! And for the last ninety years he lived as a hermit! How can he be appointed to the post of dean of the faculty?!

“But he is superbly versed in combat necromancy and did not become an archmage only because he himself did not want to.” In addition, according to the Council, they currently have no other necromancers who would like to go to Adair, so they had to take the one who agreed. Although I do not rule out that the dark magicians did this only to annoy Kyrian.

Wharton fell silent, but Lashel understood without words how the master’s statement should have ended - “but these are the problems of Kyrian himself.” Mentally grinning, the young master casually remarked:

– We have a fun year ahead at the academy...

Part one

Backstab

And what is good and what is bad, I sometimes just don’t know…

Gamma Ray. Real World

Swing, lunge. Metallic ringing from the collision of blades against each other. The block skillfully placed by the enemy turned out to be so tough that my hand began to buzz and I had to urgently go into defense so as not to give up my position. My opponent, meanwhile, tried to develop an advantage and began to push me back, but with a cunning deceptive blow that Grayson taught me, I forced my opponent to be distracted for half a second and tried to disarm him, but he quickly concentrated and repelled my attack. All these attacks were so fast that an untrained observer could only see flashes of light on the blades. And - during all this time, not even ten seconds have passed - here we are again circling opposite each other, looking for a gap in the enemy’s defense. The entire surrounding world narrowed to the small area where the duel took place, and I saw nothing but two long thin blades opposite me, the sunlight glinting on their shiny blades.

- Your Majesty! – an alien voice burst into my consciousness so suddenly that I, confused, shuddered and blinked. The higher vampire did not fail to take advantage of this and, in one smooth, fluid movement, rushed towards me, simultaneously delivering a blow. Sard flew from my right hand and landed among the bushes that separated the gravel area from the lawn, and my opponent ended the fight by tripping me in the simplest way, so that I fell to the ground in the most ignominious manner. The short vampire, who had just appeared in the field of view and because of whom I lost the fight, groaned and put her hand to her mouth, horrified by such treatment of the royal person, and then looked disapprovingly at Lucius Ertano, and he, not at all embarrassed , lowered the weapon.

“On strangers during the fight...” he began in an instructive tone, not paying any attention to the vampire, who still could not decide what to do - help me get up or give a sharp rebuke to Lucius, who raised his weapon at the queen as soon as she turned away .

“...You can’t be distracted,” I finished his sentence for him with a sigh and rose to my feet without outside help. -What's the matter, Lady Amell?

The chamberlain, to whom I addressed myself, turned away from Lucius and curtsied low, so that the hem of her purple dress lay on the ground.

“I beg your pardon, Your Majesty, but the meeting has ended and lunch will be served in forty-five minutes.” Should I order it to be postponed for another fifteen minutes?

“No need,” I said hastily, mentally estimating how long it would take me to shower, change clothes, and comb my hair. If you try really hard, you can do it in forty-five minutes. – Lucius, then that’s all for today, since now I have lunch with the Shartarian delegation. Lady Amell, do you know if Adrian has already returned?

- No, His Majesty is still not here. Madam, are you sure you’ll make it in time?.. – The vampire looked at my dusty clothes with a doubtful look and sighed when I wiped the sweat from my forehead in front of her eyes with a completely unroyal gesture.

“And if he doesn’t have time, the guests will wait,” Lucius added ironically, putting his sardas into its sheath and holding out mine, knocked out of my hands a minute earlier. “Even though they say that precision is the politeness of kings.”
