Removing the old coating is sometimes laborious and time-consuming, and few people are attracted by the prospect of spending so much of their energy on a rough finish if only a simple cosmetic repair was planned. In this article we will talk about whether it is possible to glue wallpaper on paint and how to do it correctly without much effort.
Determine the type of paint
In order to correctly determine how to prepare the surface for gluing, it is necessary to find out the type of finish applied to it. There are 2 types of them:
- Acrylic water-based paint is odorless, absorbs into walls and is firmly fixed in the structure.
- Oil paint - has a specific odor, repels moisture and forms a “protective layer”.
In order to understand whether it is possible to glue wallpaper on oil paint or acrylic, you need to find out what type of coating you are faced with. There are several ways to do this.
Method 1
Use a spatula to try to remove some of the covering from the wall. If it is an oily coating, the material falls off in large chunks. It can be removed quite easily and does not crumble. The acrylic coating, unlike the first option, adheres tightly, crumbles and falls off in small parts.

Water-based paint
We have already decided whether it is possible to glue wallpaper on acrylic paint. Let's talk about how to prepare the surface for gluing. For this:
- Prepare a mixture with the following composition: solvent plus primer in a 1 to 1 ratio.
- Apply this mixture to the wall. The solvent will corrode the top layer of the emulsion, and the soil will be absorbed into the wall.
- After the wall is dry, apply the primer again to create a roughened surface that will bond firmly to the wall.
- After the wall dries, proceed with gluing.
- Use a 1 to 1 ratio of PVA and wallpaper glue.
Can wallpaper be glued to paint without surface preparation?
If the repair needs to be done faster and there is no time to process the walls, there is another way out. In order to determine the strength of the walls, you will need to take a strip of construction tape. Stick it to the wall and tear it off sharply. If there are no traces left on it from the surface, then the wall has passed the test, and you can glue the wallpaper onto the paint. Otherwise, the coating will need to be cleaned off.
Important! To roughen the surface, sand it with sandpaper.
Wallpaper gluing on whitewash and enamel
In addition to paints and varnishes, the wall can also be treated with enamel or whitewashed. Let's talk about what to do with the wall in such cases.
Whitewash
If the walls were whitewashed, then you will have to work hard, because the whitewashing will need to be completely removed from them. For this:
- Prepare a mild soap solution.

What to do with old oil paint
So that gluing wallpaper on oil paint does not turn out to be a useless work, take a good look at all the walls.
- In many places there can be cracks, lagging, often fragments of the layer together with plaster or putty. It is clear that these defects cannot be left behind.
- Be sure to remove all nails, protruding elements, dismantle the baseboards.

Choosing the right adhesive
- Visit a hardware store before applying wallpaper. Ask the seller to show you a glue designed for heavy wallpaper.
- Even if you have a thin, single layer material, use a vinyl wallpaper mix. Most likely you will be offered a bustilate, Methylan or Moment.
- If you are not afraid of the price, buy PVA. You can use it both in its pure form, diluted with water, and mixed into any wallpaper glue in proportions of 1/1.
Surface priming
Since all your actions should be aimed at improving the adhesion of walls to paper, you need to eliminate poorly absorbed substances.
Any builder who knows how to stick paper without fear of falling off will advise you on some steps to take to minimize risk.
- Ask in the store for soil "Concrete Contact" (quartzite).
- Wash and dry the walls, then apply in a 3/4 mm layer.
- After drying, putty the surfaces with ordinary putty.

In addition to traditional paper wallpaper, there are other varieties: for example, fabric, vinyl, non-woven, jute, etc. Wallpapering of one type or another has its own characteristics. But there are some general principles for preparing a surface for wallpaper, which must be adhered to in any case.
Standard surface preparation for wallpaper
The first and most important rule: the substrate on which we are going to glue the wallpaper must be clean, smooth and slightly rough.
It is necessary to remove all irregularities from the surface of the walls: grind the mortar overflows, and seal the grooves with putty. The point is not only that all these defects will show through on the finished surface. In places of irregularities, the panel cannot be tightly glued to the wall - air will remain between it and the base. This can cause the wallpaper to peel off.
In times of shortage of building materials, surface preparation was carried out in a very peculiar way - they pasted over the wall with newspapers. But this should not be done under any circumstances! Printing ink may show through the wallpaper in the form of yellow spots or streaks. And through non-woven wallpaper, newspaper text will generally shine through.
Remember that wallpaper, especially non-woven wallpaper, can be quite transparent!
Therefore, to prepare the walls for wallpaper, it is advisable to use a finishing plaster or acrylic putty (water-based). After the putty mass has dried, all traces of the trowel and other irregularities must be sanded off. After that, the prepared surface is treated. The wall is now ready for wallpapering.
Pasting wallpaper on non-standard bases
If the walls are finished in a new room, there are no special problems with preparing the surface for wallpaper - it is enough to follow the above algorithm. But what if the walls have old finishes? It all depends on the type of finishing material and the strength of its adhesion to the building surface.
Can wallpaper be glued to wallpaper?
The old wallpaper definitely needs to be removed. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, if the panels are glued with an overlap, the joints will appear on the surface of the new wallpaper.
Secondly, streaks and stains of paint, which was applied to the old wallpaper, can appear on the surface of the new finish.
And one more thing: you can never be sure that old wallpaper sticks to the wall firmly enough. Having absorbed moisture from the glue, they will get wet and may peel off in the most unexpected places. Along with them, the new wallpaper will also suffer. In this way, you can't glue wallpaper on wallpaper... Choosing this path, you act at your own peril and risk.
Can wallpaper be glued to paint?
If the walls have been painted, in some cases the old coating can be left. Wallpaper will fit well on water-based (water-dispersion) or glue painting. Only first you need to clean up all peeling areas, if any, putty these places and be sure to cover the walls with a primer.
Not suitable for wallpapering surfaces that are finished with paints that form a smooth, moisture-proof film - latex moisture-resistant paints, alkyd and pentaphthalic enamels, oil paints. It is desirable to completely remove such coatings from the walls.

It's hard to imagine a worse reason for gluing wallpaper than chalk whitewash. Porous chalk will quickly absorb all the moisture from the glue, and it simply will not have time to polymerize. It is likely that freshly pasted wallpaper will lie on the floor the next day.
How to prepare the surface for wallpaper in this case? In principle, everything is simple: the whitewash must be washed out to the base and the walls must be covered with a primer. If the surfaces are far from ideal, a layer of putty will need to be applied. After drying, sand and prime again. Now you can glue.
Can wallpaper be glued to plywood?
If necessary, wallpaper can be glued onto plywood sheathing. But before gluing, it is necessary to carefully putty the joints between the sheets and other irregularities. For this, it is advisable to use not gypsum or acrylic solutions, but a special putty on wood. After the putty has dried, it is sanded, and then the entire surface of the wall is primed. To do this, you can take a universal acrylic primer.
Features of working with different types of wallpaper
Faced mainly with paper wallpaper, we are accustomed to spreading glue on the cloth. However, when gluing most types of fabric wallpaper, the glue is applied to the wall.
Non-woven material is a translucent material. Therefore, the surface for these wallpapers should be of a uniform color. Spots of white putty on the painted wall will be visible through the wallpaper. Therefore, the base must either be completely treated with a finishing putty, or painted with water-based paint, and then walked with a primer.
When working with non-woven fabric, use only the glue recommended by the manufacturer. Starch-based paste cannot be used. It will appear on the surface of the panels in the form of a white bloom. It will be almost impossible to remove it.
Manufacturers of fabric wallpaper advise using the so-called "base non-woven" when preparing walls. This material smooths out small surface defects (unevenness, scratches) and masks color spots. Thus, a smooth and even surface is obtained, on which fabric wallpaper fits perfectly.
Before gluing, jute panels must be moistened with water, and cork wallpaper is glued only to special glue (ordinary dry wallpaper adhesives are not suitable).

After that, the wall must dry, and only then a layer of clean primer can be applied on top.
