Hello everyone! Every carpenter should have on hand a means to securely secure his workpiece or part. A wooden bench vise is perfect for this purpose. Look at my version of the vise data that I made do it yourself from plywood and metal.

For this project, I used all the tools I had (from the nailer to the welding machine). Therefore, I do not provide a complete list of the tools used. Use whatever tools you have. Be creative!

Step 1: Materials used

First, I cut the plywood to size. One piece was 2 cm thick, and the second was 3 cm thick.
After that, I cut two strips of oak 1 cm thick. They should be glued and nailed to the upper edge of the sponges, ensuring their stability and better appearance. Then cut flush and sand.

I attached a 2 cm plywood blank to the table with a couple of furniture bolts.

Step 2: device mechanism

Let's move on to the mechanism itself.

From my local metal shop, I purchased a 2 cm diameter metal rod and an M 27 threaded rod, as well as a couple of washers and nuts. In addition, I purchased a flat piece 4 mm thick and 6 cm wide. These are all the metal components that we need.

Take wooden oak blocks and use them as guides. For a threaded rod, I welded two nuts to a flat piece and attached it under the table with screws (see photo).

On the outer jaw, I decided to add the flat blank that I mentioned earlier. This will provide additional stability for the entire structure.

It is very important that all the elements are in line, otherwise the vice will not work.

I also welded the washer to the threaded rod. This is so that the outer jaw also moves when the rod is turned. Without this, the sponge will remain in place and only be moved manually.

Step 3: Lathe machining

For the rotating head, I glued together several cherry and oak blanks. Then, on a lathe, I gave the required shape. The result obtained turned out to be quite acceptable. Next, using a chisel, I made a depression for the nut. On a drill press, I drilled through a 2 cm hole for the handle. The hole turned out a little at an angle ...

The handle is a spruce pin with cherry end caps that prevent the handle from falling out. Treat the handle with linseed oil.

Also on the outer jaw, I drilled holes 3 cm deep for the stops on the joiner's workbench. This is why I used 3cm plywood for the outer sponge. But a single row of stops on the joiner's workbench won't do any good, so we still need to add other holes on this table. I will do this when I get to the final stage. I just have to consider the mechanical part from the bottom.

Step 4: Finish

Locksmith's vice is a necessary equipment in the workshop of any man, without which it is difficult to do in one or another type of work.

It is not at all necessary to place them in the garage; you can equip a corner for a vice at home, for example, using a table or an ordinary stool for this.

What is a locksmith vice for?

The vise body material is most often made of durable cast iron. It is important to know that cast iron is not designed to be exposed to high temperatures; steel metal is suitable for these purposes.





If the work will be carried out with small-sized parts, you should not increase financial costs and make compact small vise.

A small vice with a ball joint base is useful on the farm for processing very small parts that can be fastened individually. These are mini-vices with suction cups installed on a glass or well-polished surface. But they are suitable for rare frivolous work.

Please note that it is prudent to introduce soft attachments on the fastener for working with soft parts, so as not to cause damage. A vise with the smallest backlash with fully spread jaws is ideal.

A vice without a rotary mechanism will significantly save money, unless, of course, it is useful in work.

Work on the manufacture of locksmith vices at home

Carpenter's vice, independently made at home, will significantly save the family budget at times than their ready-made "brothers" in the store. And a huge plus is that the product can be made according to personal preferences and for certain individual types of work.







It is absolutely easy to find material for the construction, it can be: a part of a technical pipe, a used jack, old lathes, presses, etc.

And if you go to the metal collection point, there will undoubtedly be a suitable part for the vice, which will cost you a penny.

Classic homemade vise

There are many variations of vise, but the most popular and traditional is the steel material type. Such a vice will be much more reliable than factory-made purchased ones.

  • a plate of steel at least 3 mm., but it can be much thicker;
  • external and internal channel (120 and 100 mm.);
  • ears made of steel;
  • lathe cutters 2 pieces;
  • a small piece of reinforcement (a rod for a gate);
  • nut (2 pieces), hairpin or screw of a certain diameter, which corresponds to the bar;
  • washer (2 pieces) of the same diameter with a lead screw;
  • screw pair 335 mm;
  • a thick plate is required to secure the propeller undercarriage.

It is necessary to separate the lead screw with washers from both sides on the sides of the plate. One of the two washers must be secured with a cotter pin or a retaining ring so that the part is completely collapsible, you first need to weld the thread from the screw to it.

The handle should also be collapsible on one side, and on the other side it should be welded with a nut. A nut with a channel from the screws must be welded to the flush plate. To make the channel inside with the screw easier to move on the move, it is recommended to lightly process it with a file.

Sponges are welded to the so-called ears, made of turning tools. They are put in place when the lead screw is screwed in, so the ears stand at the ideal distance from each other.

But you can also connect them with a wire for greater convenience, so in the future it will be more convenient to fix uneven parts, the shape of which is expanded to the bottom.

And if you do not have a workshop, garage or a corner in the apartment where you can repair simple household utensils, the presence of a small bench vise can help out great in many situations, turning a kitchen table or even a stool into a mini-workshop.

First of all, about the appointment. The task of the vise is to securely fix and hold a part or workpiece while processing it with various tools. The design parameters of the vice vary depending on which objects are predominantly needed to be fixed in the vise and what tools are to be used with them. This material is hard, wear-resistant, but rather brittle. Therefore, if you are not going to bend thick steel blanks with a sledgehammer without serious preliminary heating, then feel free to take such a vice, and if you are going to, then it is better to look for steel ones.

If you need to regularly fasten cylindrical workpieces in such a desktop vice, then it is advisable to make a sponge pad with a triangular cut. And if such operations are quite frequent, then we advise you to consider options for the design of the locksmith's vice, somewhat different from the standard ones.

In general, if we talk about the functionality of a locksmith's vice, then first of all it is worth thinking about the size. If you know for sure that you do not have to work with dimensional parts, then do not pay for extra metal, and perhaps even consider a compact machine vice.

Or vice versa - it is possible to work with large-sized parts, but without much effort when processing them. Then you can consider the option of a vise with the possibility of pre-expanding the jaws without using a lead screw.

If you do not have a workbench, and there are also more operations in the list of works that do not require the application of brute physical force to the parts being processed, then the option with a table vise fixed with various clamps is yours.

True, the latter are minitisks, it is better to have them on the farm as additional ones. Large parts cannot be clamped in them, and you cannot apply serious efforts to the workpiece being processed - there are not enough efforts to press the clamp to hold the vise themselves, but making a key from the lock according to the sample is the very thing.

In addition, such vise is sometimes indispensable if you need to unscrew a stuck nut, when you can use them as a hand tool. Despite the miniature size, the clamping of the sponges is very good.

It is also worth mentioning a small vice on a ball joint, which serves for the convenience of processing very small parts of a complex configuration, allowing processing of various surfaces of the part from one fixture.

It is clear that the pressing force of the ball joint is not enough for serious physical activity, so such a vice is suitable for quite specific types of work. The same, in our opinion, not very serious, will be vise with a suction cup attachment.

For their more or less reliable fixing, either a well-polished surface or glass is needed. On other surfaces, they are unlikely to be securely fixed. And their functionality is also small.

For all types of locksmith vices, you will obviously need additional pads to secure parts made of soft materials.

Some bench vices have a pneumatic drive, which greatly facilitates the process of clamping the workpiece.

But if you do not have a mini locksmith production at home, then such a vice is unlikely to be useful to you.

What else is important to know when choosing a locksmith vise? Quite a lot of complaints from users about Chinese vices with cast-iron bodies, equipped with clamps for fastening, often break off, therefore, if you want cheap vices from the Middle Kingdom, then choose from steel.

Choose a vise that has the smallest play between the body parts with the jaws set as wide as possible. Also, if you do not need a rotary mechanism at the base of the vise for work, choose a model without it: you will save money and the rigidity of the structure is higher.

How to make a locksmith vice with your own hands

The question is: why, with such an abundance of sizes, shapes and configurations of locksmith vices offered by the retail network, to engage in their independent implementation. When making a do-it-yourself locksmith vice, you can save up to 10 times in cost, as well as make a device with the specified parameters.

And this is absolutely real, because almost everything that can be useful for making table vices can be found at scrap metal collection points for mere pennies.

This is especially noticeable in the photograph, in which parts of a plumbing pipe valve with a flywheel are used as a screw pair.

Also, the screw pair can be taken from an old vertical jack. Even if part of the thread has already slightly worn out, then, as a rule, this is a small section from the edge of the screw, which will need to be cut off in order to shorten it. Lead screws of old lathes, screw presses, etc. are also very durable.

At worst, for very little money, you can order a turner at the nearest vocational school such a pair with a wide nut, with a conventional metric thread. Just make the diameter larger, and the nut wider. In this case, the clamping force is redistributed over a sufficiently large area due to the screw diameter and the number of turns.

As a last resort, just buy a hairpin with a larger diameter in a hardware store, and a high nut to it, or 3 ordinary pieces, which are then welded sequentially, screwed onto the hairpin.

The classic version of the homemade table vise

From the photo, steel parts are clearly guessed, almost always easily selected at the nearest second-hand metal:

  • steel plate 200 x 200 with a thickness of 3 - 6 mm (thicker is possible);
  • 2 channels (120 mm - outer, 100 mm - inner) with a length of 160 mm and 300 mm, respectively, in your case the dimensions may be different depending on the length of the lead screw;
  • steel ears from some bulky container;
  • 2 worn turning tools;
  • a bar for a wrench, in this case a piece of reinforcement;
  • a screw or stud corresponding to the diameter of the bar and 2 nuts;
  • 2 washers, with a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the lead screw;
  • screw pair - any of those described (in this case - ordered by the turner), 335 mm long;
  • strong plate for fastening the lead screw.

The lead screw is separated from the plate on both sides by washers, one of which is stuck to it by welding from the side of the threaded part, although with this diameter it can be fixed with a cotter pin or a retaining ring. Then this unit will be completely collapsible, which is clearly better for reasons of maintainability.

On one side, the handle is muffled with a welded nut, and on the other side it is made collapsible, after the thread is welded to it from a screw of the corresponding diameter.

The nut from the screw pair is welded to the base plate flush with the 120 channel.

For the normal entry of the inner channel with the lead screw fixed on it, its ribs must be slightly filed.

The ears with welded jaws made of cut-off turning tools must be positioned with the lead screw screwed in. So they will take the exact place. You can even twist the sponges together with soft wire to ensure they are perfectly aligned.

You can also make a notch on them beforehand using an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc.

Due to such a fastening of the jaws, namely the shape of the hooks and the distance between them, in such a vice, non-standard parts, extended to the bottom, can be fastened.

And the maximum thickness of the workpieces processed in this vice is very impressive. And there is no need to talk about the maintainability of such equipment - you can see for yourself.

It is known that gas and water pipes are produced in such a way that any pipe must fit tightly inside the pipe of the next standard size. With this in mind, I decided to take two cuts of pipes of two adjacent standard sizes. I inserted it into a large pipe and attached it to one of the ends using electric welding

flange with a large diameter nut - M16. On a smaller pipe, using the same electric welding, I installed a similar flange with a nut, but of a larger size -M18. The M16 threaded rod should rotate smoothly in such a hole.

It was to this pin, at a short distance from the end, that I installed a nut, which I securely fixed with the help of electric welding. After that, I inserted the threaded rod into the cavity of the small pipe so that the fixed nut was inside the pipe and abutted against the flange with a large hole. I screwed another nut onto the protruding end of the stud and also fixed it by welding. Pre-installed intermediate slip washers between the flange and the nuts. Now screw the end of the threaded rod enough from the pipe into the nut of the large pipe. The result is the main working element of the vice. It only remained to install the pressure plates (jaws) and support plates (paws) on the vice. I made the sponges from a square pipe, the legs from a corner. And the vice is ready!

For ease of maintenance, I welded a nut to the protruding end of the threaded rod so that, by inserting any bar into it, it was possible to easily rotate the axis and control the vice.

Homemade vise has drawbacks

When working on such a vice, the inner tube can rotate behind the pin, but this does not scare me at all. You just need to hold this pipe in the desired position when fixing. And it is not difficult to eliminate this drawback - it is enough to install the retainer.

It is even easier to make a vice from two pieces of square pipes that are close in size. All technology remains the same.
