Seam roof installation. Seamed roof - well forgotten old

Today there is just a huge selection of roofing materials on the market: from traditional ceramic tiles to modern ondulin. However, despite such a variety, many homeowners opt for metal seam roofs.

The main features of standing seam roofs

To begin with, we will understand the construction technology associated with this type of roofing. So, folded roof is called a roof, assembled from metal sheets, interconnected by means of special seams - folds. These seams can be either horizontal (recumbent seams) or vertical (standing seams, which should go exclusively along the slope). In addition, single and double folds are used.

Sheets of metal with edges prepared to form seam joints are called paintings. Installation of seam roofing is carried out from sheets with a thickness of 450 to 800 millimeters and a width of 600 to 800 millimeters (the length can be arbitrary).

Folded joints are created using special hand tools or electromechanical devices. It is also produced by modern industry, the installation process of which is greatly simplified and does not require the use of tools.

Positive and negative sides of using seam roofing

As with any roof, installing a seam roof has both advantages and disadvantages.

Among the advantages of such a roof are:

  • long service life;
  • corrosion resistance;
  • light weight;
  • a smooth surface that does not allow rainwater and snow to linger.

Of the disadvantages of a seamed roof, it should be noted:

  • weak sound insulation (in the absence of a layer of thermal insulation during the rain, the sound of drops on the metal will be heard);
  • difficult installation (without sufficient experience, it will be very problematic to cope with such work);
  • low aesthetic appeal (in the case of using galvanized steel) or high cost (in the case of using copper or zinc-titanium);
  • the ability to accumulate static electricity (in this regard, the installation of a seam roof must always be accompanied by the installation of a lightning rod).

Types of metals used for the construction of seam roofing

The following types of metal can be used for the installation of a seam roof:

The specifics of installing a seam roof

Of course, the choice of material plays an important role, but just as important is another moment when a seam roof is installed - the installation technology, which must be strictly observed. First of all, it should be borne in mind that this method of covering can be used for those roofs with a slope of at least 14 degrees. The use of a seam roof on flatter roofs (with a slope of 7 degrees) is possible only if the metal sheets are connected with a double seam, sealed with silicone sealant.

In order for a folded-type roof to serve as long as possible, the connecting elements used during its installation (clamps, nails, bolts, wire, etc.) must be made of the same material as it itself. If this requirement is not met (for example, when using ordinary nails to fix galvanized steel sheets), due to corroded connecting parts, the roof itself will gradually deteriorate, which will significantly reduce its service life.

Seam roof installation technologies

Two main technologies are used for the construction of a seam roof: traditional and modern. Let's consider in detail each of these techniques.

Traditional technology provides for the following stages of work performance:

  • production of paintings for the subsequent assembly of the roof, as well as other roofing elements (overhangs, gutters, etc.). To do this, a drawing is made according to which blanks are cut out of the metal, and then the edges of these blanks are bent so that they can be connected to each other by the folded method;
  • lifting prepared paintings to the roof and connecting them with the help of special seams - folds;
  • fastening the installed pictures to the lathing using special connecting elements - clamps. One end of them is wound into a seam, and the other is attached to the lathing beam;
  • installation of protective aprons made of the same metal as the roof itself on all openings (pipes, ventilation ducts, etc.).

In the case of using metal sheets, the length of which exceeds ten meters, the technology of mounting a seam roof provides for their fastening to the crate by means of floating clamps. Due to this, even in the event of thermal deformations, the tightness of the roof will be maintained.

Modern installation technology allows:

  • make paintings of any length;
  • use a mobile rolling mill, which provides the most durable and tight connection;
  • carry out fastening of metal with hidden clamps, as well as minimize the total number of connecting elements, which reduces the likelihood of corrosion and increases the service life of the roofing.

Features of installation of a roof made of zinc-titanium and copper

One of the most specific materials from which a folded roof can be made is zinc-titanium. It features unrivaled durability and superior looks, yet is extremely susceptible to mechanical damage. Therefore, the most important point that must be remembered when a zinc-titanium folded roof is arranged is that the installation should be carried out as carefully as possible, avoiding blows or scratching of the sheets. If it is necessary to put down marks, a marker should be used. Also, work with this material provides for the presence of special

The fence should not only be durable, but also aesthetically attractive, so that the overall appearance of the building does not suffer from its installation. It is recommended to make it from shaped pipes or a similar material, painted with polymer powder paint.

When a seam roof is installed, the installation instructions, as well as sanitary norms and rules, must be strictly observed. Only in this case, the roof will become a reliable protector from atmospheric precipitation and will provide warmth and comfort in the house for many decades.

A seam cover is a surface made of metal sheets, the joint of which is formed by a special bending of the edges of the roofing blanks. This type of pairing allows you to get a fairly strong connection. The technique of making a seam roof with your own hands is somewhat different from the well-known methods of joining sheet blanks. At the same time, instead of riveting or welding mechanisms, a special seaming machine is used, with the help of which it is possible to form an aesthetically attractive and sufficiently reliable connection.

Varieties of folded joints

The advantages of this method of arranging sheet coverings include:

  • ease of laying sheet material, characterized by a relatively low weight;
  • relatively low cost of blanks from sheet steel;
  • high quality and reliability of the connecting seams.

All of the above advantages make it possible to use this coating formation technique in the repair of buildings of any profile, as well as in the manufacture of roofs in newly built houses. This method is especially popular in low-rise (private) construction.

We note in passing that when installing the base under the seam cover, a classic "roofing pie" is prepared, which includes elements of hydro, steam and thermal insulation. At the same time, the roofing material itself, cut and laid in the form of strips of rolled steel, has a decorative polymer coating that sets its color range.

Steel blanks are laid on the roof lathing with pre-measured longitudinal strips, which may not always be solid. For high-quality joining of individual flooring strips, a special type of connection is used - the so-called "recumbent" fold, which has a flat shape and is hardly noticeable against the background of the coating.

Please note that the longitudinal edges of the workpieces are connected by the standing seam method (see figure), which forms a complex convex shape. Note also that more complex double seam locks can be used in addition to the standard single joint.

Self-assembly

To prepare any of the connections discussed above, you will need a special mechanism - the so-called machine for rolling the seam. " We do not even recommend trying to replace it with any home-made device (or other improvised means), when using which, a violation of the seam formation technology and, as a result, a decrease in the quality and reliability of the formed joints is possible.

If it is impossible (or unwilling) to purchase a seam rolling machine, you can use a roofing kit with already formed edges, which provide a self-locking folded lock. The latter consists of a so-called "locking tooth", which, when one metal strip is applied to another, is easily captured by the hook-shaped profile on it. To get a reliable connection, you just need to click the lock, which, as a rule, takes very little time.

The use of ready-made (molded) roofing material greatly simplifies the installation of the coating, and also significantly reduces the time for construction work. To equip a standing seam roof, in addition to the machine, you will need the following tool kit:

  • screwdriver, metal scissors;
  • pliers, mallet and hammer;
  • a special gun for sealing seams with a sealant.

Installation features

When arranging a seam roof, it is necessary to take into account the following features of the organization of installation work:

  1. Regardless of the chosen method of joining sheet blanks, their fixation on the crate is carried out by means of special clamp fasteners, a feature of which is their absolute invisibility.
  2. During installation, each of the panels to be laid must face its lower lock in the direction of the next element.

In construction, 2 types of clamps are used: movable and fixed. A movable mount is used when working with sheets longer than 8 meters, and a fixed mount is used for relatively short sheets. These fasteners also include a standard self-tapping screw complete with a press washer.

The roofing is laid from the bottom up, keeping a fixed distance between the longitudinal joints. In this case, it does not matter from which side of the roof to start installation; the main thing to pay attention to is the correct orientation of the lower lock.

Folds are called special seams connecting two metal sheets into a single sheet. In this way, not only roofing is carried out, seam seams are used in the manufacture of metal buckets, drainage systems, pipes, gutters and many other types of metal products. These stitches are also found on decorative items and jewelry.

The name comes from the German rebate (Falz) - in translation groove. In a broader sense, it is used to name the bend of the seam connecting two metal sheets. Folds can be made on factory bending machines or manually. The first method guarantees flat surfaces, significantly speeds up the process of roof overlap. Manual forming of folds is considered the most difficult roofing work and is not performed by all craftsmen.

Depending on the spatial position and the number of bends, seam connections are divided into several types.

Folded joint typeBrief description of manufacturing technology and performance characteristics

The simplest and most used type of roof lock. Resembles a tenon / groove connection. The edge of one sheet is bent at an angle of 90 °, the edge of the second is made with two folds - the first at a right angle, the second at an angle of 180 °. Such a connection can be prepared on the ground, on the roof, the sheets are inserted into each other and finally folded to give tightness.

More complex connection. Provides increased tightness rates. It is rarely used on roofs, more often it is used during the manufacture of various metal containers or jewelry. The end of one sheet is folded twice, the first time at a right angle, the second time at an angle of 180 °. The end of the second sheet is folded three times. First time at right angles and twice at 180 °.

Simple connection, used as a technological seam of various products for bulk materials. Advantages - simplicity of execution, the ability to bend folded sheets across the seam with an arc or at different angles. All standing seams do not allow for such bends.

Airtight seam, used during the manufacture of containers for storing liquids. The number of bends is the same as with double standing, the difference is that it is not located vertically, but is pressed against the sheets.

Standing seams have high bending strengths; recumbent joints cannot withstand vertical loads. All folds of double seams are made on two sheets at the same time. The roofer must first calculate the width of the deflection strips and install the sheets with the required offset.

The steel sheet is fixed to the lathing with a clamp. It is a metal strip made from the same material as the roof. The clamp is screwed to the crate, then bends at an angle of 90 °, bends around the fold and bends again, but at an angle of 180 °. This technology makes it possible to fasten the sheets to the crate without making holes in the roof; it is not used on industrial-made seam sheets.

For seam roofing, the industry produces specially rolled metal with a given profile, which greatly speeds up and simplifies the process of roofing. In addition, the factory profiles have perfectly flat surfaces and uniform dimensions, which significantly improves the appearance of the coating. Finished industrial sheets are called paintings or folded sheets.

There are two kinds of paintings.

  1. Starting. Installed first on each side of the roof slope, they have only two studs.
  2. Privates. They are used for the main coating, are connected to each other in a tenon / groove.

To roll up the folds, hand tools or mechanical seaming devices are used. Manual seaming makes it possible to connect not only straight folds, but also elements of complex configurations. The seamer gives an excellent look and quality of the joint, but can only be used on straight roof sections.

The width of the panels is standardized, the length is chosen by the customer, taking into account the architectural features of the rafter system and the dimensions of the roof.

Seam roofs are not widespread among developers; they are most often found on exclusive buildings or outbuildings. The rebate makes it possible to connect sheets together without using traditional hardware, which excludes the formation of holes on the surface. It is in these places that metal corrosion occurs most rapidly, especially if the rubber gaskets have lost their original sealing properties.

An important quality of standing seam roofing is the absence of fastening elements on the surface (in particular, transverse joints when creating a roofing map of any length), which eliminates leaks

Only professionals with extensive experience in the manufacture of various seams and a full set of special tools and devices can install such roofs. The advantages of seam roofing include the following parameters.

  1. Low weight. The mass of a square meter of the coating does not exceed 5-6 kg, the data fluctuate depending on the thickness. The light weight allows the construction of a lightweight truss system, which, given the high cost of lumber, significantly reduces the estimated cost of roofing.

    Another plus of standing seam roofing is the low weight of the entire structure, including battens and other elements

  2. Minimum price. For standing seam roofing, you can buy rolled sheet steel. It is considered a raw material for the manufacture of metal tiles and metal profiles. Accordingly, rolled non-profiled steel is much cheaper than finished products.

  3. The complete absence of holes eliminates mechanical damage to the integrity of the paintings. It is in the holes that corrosion processes quickly appear. In the future, leaks form here, the roof has to be changed or repaired.

Like all architectural elements, seam roofs have their drawbacks.

As for the rest of the common problems (noise, high thermal conductivity, accumulation of static charge), they are exactly the same as with metal tiles or profiled roofing sheets.

What metals can seamed roofs be made of?

The main requirement for metals is that they must bend easily without the formation of microcracks. It is known that microcracks gradually widen, the reason for this phenomenon is metal fatigue. An increase in the size of microcracks can cause leaks. According to their physical characteristics, the following metals are suitable for seam roofing.

Copper

The most expensive material of standing seam roofs is used only on exclusive houses, during the reconstruction of historical buildings and the construction of religious buildings. Over time, the copper surface oxidizes and becomes covered with a thin protective film of the original color scheme - patina. This gives the roofs a special prestige and perfection.

Aluminum

The service life is practically unlimited. The aluminum surface is also coated with a thin oxide layer, which prevents further aging. The metal is easily bent and stretched, which allows it to be used on roofs with very complex geometries.

Zinc-titanium

An alloy specially adapted to the construction needs, it is characterized by high corrosion resistance and a beautiful appearance. It has a unique self-healing property - all small scratches heal. The metal can be stretched without degrading its original physical properties.

Cink Steel

For its manufacture, structural steels are used, the zinc coating is made by a hot method. This manufacturing technology increases the service life of the roof. For additional anti-corrosion protection and to improve the design appearance, the surface can be coated with polymer paints.

Installation of click-and-roll roofing

The click-fold connection differs from the usual one in that it can be hermetically snapped in without the use of special equipment and tools. The plant provides for unique profile bends, making it possible to speed up the process of laying the roofing material.

Depending on the type of roofing, a roofing cake is made. For insulated roofs, this is a rather complicated and expensive structure; cold roofs are much faster and easier to install.

Under the seam roof, it is customary to understand the roof covering, which is made of sheet metal and is connected to each other using latches in the form of gutters. In this material, we will tell you how to make a seam roof and what materials are used for this.

The concept of "seam roofing"

The method of joining sheet metal to cover roofs, invented by the Germans, has been popular in our country for a long time. And if more recently the folds were connected by hand, now a large number of mechanical and electrical tools are available for their seaming. So making a seam roof has become much more convenient and affordable for non-professionals.

Among the advantages of such a coating are:

  • Low weight, allowing you to do without a reinforced rafter frame.
  • Tightness, reliable protection against leaks. Due to the absence of through holes, the metal does not corrode for a very long time.
  • If you have the necessary tools, you can assemble the seam roof yourself.
  • The design is equally suitable for simple roofs with a slight slope and for complex roofs.
  • The material goes well with all types of building materials.
  • The service life of such a roof is more than 20 years. Since all the joints are reliably sealed, and the seams are hidden, water does not leak under it, and the snow rolls freely from the roof surface.

Minuses

In fairness, it is worth pointing out the disadvantages of seamed roofs, which arise mainly as a result of incorrect installation:

  • Since the covering is metal, rain falling on a seam roofing creates quite a lot of noise. To avoid such an effect, it is recommended to use perfectly flat bars for the lathing, to which the metal sheets will fit snugly.
  • The folds on the roof must be periodically checked and, if necessary, repaired.
  • If in the process of laying the roof, snow-retaining devices were not provided, the snow will come off it very quickly and intensively.
  • Seam roofing is not represented by a rich variety of colors and textures. However, this is the best option for those who are a supporter of minimalism and do not seek to stand out.

Structural elements

First of all, it is worth deciding on some terms.

So, roofing pictures are called rectangular sheets of metal with folds. From such sheets, they are collected in a folded roof.

The term "fold" is usually understood as a kind of seam, which is formed as a result of joining separate sheets of material. Such a connection does not need additional sealing with glue or sealants. In addition, these seams function as stiffeners.

Clamps are special fasteners that are fixed to the base of the roof. They are simple, that is, repeating the shape of the fold, and also movable - they compensate for the thermal expansion of the metal.

Varieties of materials for paintings

There are various types of standing seam roofing on the market, which have significant differences. In most cases, modern seam roofing is made of materials such as:

  • Steel... Distinguish between non-galvanized products, with a zinc coating or with an additional polymer layer. Such materials are characterized by durability, oxidation resistance and low cost. Nevertheless, in the process of operation, such a roof gradually loses its luster, so in order to maintain a presentable appearance, it is worthwhile to dwell on materials with a colored coating. In addition, it is important to ensure that the products are covered with a film to protect them from scratches and damage.
  • Copper... What material are used to make very beautiful roofs that literally shine under the sun? Moss or any other plants do not grow on it. Since copper paintings are flexible enough, roofs of any configuration, from the simple to the most complex, can be made from them.

However, this material is quite soft, so it should be handled very carefully. In addition, the cost of copper is quite high.

After some time, a layer of oxides forms on the copper, creating a dark brown film. For this reason, copper roofing cannot be combined with any other material.

  • Zinc... Zinc paintings are additionally covered with another protective layer of zinc carbonate. During operation, such a coating becomes silvery-gray. Nevertheless, the service life of such a folded roof is not very long (up to 50 years), therefore, such materials are practically not used in European countries.
  • Aluminum... This metal is resistant to oxidation, so that a seam aluminum roof usually lasts about 100 years. In addition, it has a very beautiful silver color. However, when installing a seam aluminum roof, it is worth remembering that it is very susceptible to thermal expansion.
  • Zinc-titanium... The original solution to connect 2 metals together made it possible to obtain a material that is distinguished by reliability, ductility, and oxidation resistance. Over time, a layer of patina forms on the alloy, which is very much appreciated by modern designers.
  • Alumozinc... The zinc-aluminum alloy, which covers the steel paintings, protects the material from corrosion in places of mechanical damage, moreover, it is distinguished by the possibility of self-healing.
  • Copper zinc alloy and titanium... The additional inclusion of copper in a concentration of 0.005% makes it possible to achieve the plasticity of the material, which is so necessary for its profiling.

Coating type

In order to protect the roof from the harmful effects of the environment, a special protective coating is applied to it. In particular, for regions with a very hot and humid climate, where acid rains and high intensity of ultraviolet radiation are frequent, folded paintings with a pural coating are optimal.

How is seam roofing made?

Pictures for standing seam roofing can be in the form of single sheets (cast) or rolls. In our country, the most popular is the cast structure. Such sheets are very convenient to join even without special tools, and as a result, a seamless seamless coating is obtained.

As for rolled seam roofs, they have appeared quite recently. Such material is a strip equal to the length of the slope, on which there are already prepared edges. When connected, a double seam roof lock is obtained.

There are several designs of paintings for standing seam roofing:

  1. With two stiffeners and double rebate. It is mainly used for industrial construction, for covering warehouse buildings and workshops with various roof slopes. The standard width is 5.57 m, of which the usable area is 5.45 m.
  2. For residential construction, paintings with double seam and two stiffeners are also used, but their total width is 3.52 m, and the working width is 3.4 m.
  3. There are paintings with double folds, but without stiffening ribs. They differ in width - 5.57 m and 3.52 m. They are used in housing construction.

In addition, a distinction is made between starting, ordinary, parallel and trapezoidal seam panels.

Famous manufacturers

The most reputable manufacturer of seam roofs is the Finnish company Ruukki. In Russia, the Insi plant is engaged in the production of such material. Their products are more affordable, and they offer a fairly wide range of goods.

Seam roof laying technique

The technology of installing a roof from seam panels includes several successive stages.

How to make a base for a roof

You can mount folded pictures on a solid or discharged crate. For it, you can use wooden slats or metal profiles. It is noteworthy that the distance between the rafters should not exceed 2.5 meters, so that the sheets do not bend during operation, and the folds do not disperse.

Stacking pictures

The selected material, whether it be cast panels or rolled steel, must be raised to a height, placed on top of the batten along the eaves and fixing start from the center.

Manufacturing of auxiliary elements

For the arrangement of a bunk, cornices, valleys, as well as joints with a chimney or a window opening, special additional elements will be required. They must either be purchased ready-made, or made from rolled steel yourself.

Folds

Folds can be single, double, recumbent (horizontal) or standing (vertical).

Double seam is meant to be double folded. Such a connection is advisable in places of accumulation of snow and rainfall - in valleys, gutters, joints and other structural elements. This seam is considered the most reliable.

Reclining folds are made if it is necessary to mask the seams between individual panels. In addition, the horizontal connection is also performed with recumbent seams, with a maximum girth. Note that if the gripper of the steel strip cannot reach the depth of the fold, the seam will weaken over time.

On roofs with a slope of more than 25º, a corner standing seam or L-shaped is used. It is even easier to execute such an element than the usual one - it is enough just to correctly bend the upper edge of the seam.

With regard to the rebate height, it must be such that standing melt water does not penetrate into the joint. Rainfalls are not terrible for the folds, but standing snow can do considerable harm. Consequently, in regions with a large amount of snowfall, the folds become quite high. In addition, sealing gaskets are placed in the folds during the installation of the paintings. These elements withstand the thermal expansion of the metal and the forces during seaming.

It is worth paying attention to the fasteners - you can only use accessories with an anti-corrosion coating, otherwise rusty spots will soon form on the roof.

To connect the fingers, a hammer and wooden blocks are used, as well as manual or electromechanical machines. First, the picture is attached to the base with a narrow strip, fixing its position. Then, a recumbent fold is folded in front and behind, and vertical half-folds are folded on the right and left.

Fastening of folds is carried out mainly with clamps. They are put on by 2.5 cm, after which the panels are nailed on the right side. The clamp is made of galvanized steel with a thickness of 0.5-0.7 mm and a length of 80-120 cm. These elements are placed at the edges of the panels with a step of 60 cm and screwed with 4.8 × 28 mm screws.

Therefore, the installation looks like this:

  • the panel is placed on the crate;
  • fix it with clamps;
  • top with another panel;
  • then three layers of metal are bent in one direction, folds are folded up to the stop and pressed.

Thus, a reliable connection is achieved that protects against cold and water leakage.

The final stage

At the final stage, it is necessary to bend the cut-outs and install additional elements - valleys, aprons, gables, cornice and seam strips.

The difference between professional and amateur editing

With certain skills and experience, an amateur can install simple structural elements of the roof using scissors, a mallet and a pipe bender. At the same time, professional builders in their arsenal have a number of special tools - scissors, frames, pliers and other devices. Often, these tools are much more expensive than a folding machine.

It is worth noting that semi-automatic tools are currently used to bend the folds, which have a number of advantages:

  • ensure connection reliability;
  • work is done very quickly;
  • it is possible to operate with material of any thickness;
  • the polymer protective layer is not damaged during operation.

At the moment, panels are available on the building materials market, on which the folds are equipped with special locks. That is, a simple press is enough to connect.

Even in the last century, metal flooring was used in the construction of private houses. And this is not surprising, because metal is a wear-resistant, durable material that can withstand significant temperature drops without yielding to deformation. One of the most common types of roofs for country houses is the so-called seam roof. Seamed roofing is understood as a material that is connected into a single system by folding. The manufacturer produces sheets already prepared for folding. It is enough for builders only to bend the edges of their sheets when installing the roof, while a reliable connection is obtained, completely protected from leaks. Individual residential buildings with such a roof will be safe and sound for a long time and will go to future generations in excellent condition. In this article, we will consider all the pros and cons of a metal roof, we will get acquainted with the assembly instructions in order to install a seam roof on our own.

Advantages and disadvantages of standing seam roofing

Before you make a choice in favor of a metal coating, you should study all the pros and cons of a folded roof. Distinctive advantages of such roofs are:

  • lightness of structures and anti-corrosion properties of the material;
  • non-flammable, has a modern and aesthetic appearance;
  • operational reliability and durability;
  • lack of seams on the roof surface;
  • smooth structure, repelling water and snow;
  • guarantee of absence of leaks;
  • simple, quick and convenient installation.
  • relatively low cost.

Disadvantages:

  • if snow guards are not installed on the roof, there is a risk of avalanche snow;
  • the possibility of icicle formation due to the high heat capacity of the material;
  • with a strong impact, the roof surface can deform and leave a dent.

Based on the above list of advantages, we can safely say that seam roofing is an excellent option for those who want to find a middle ground in the balance between price and quality.

Seam roofing consists of two elements: pictures and clamps.

  • Paintings- these are metal sheets connected to each other in a single structure and having bends at the edges for their subsequent folding.
  • Clammer Is a small metal plate with dimensions of 150 × 50 mm, the function of which is to securely fasten the roofing sheets to the base. In addition, a tighter seam seam is achieved by means of a cleat, which strengthens the roof as a whole.

Material

Below are the most common materials used for the production of standing seam roofing:

  • Cink Steel;
  • polymer coated steel;
  • aluzinc;
  • aluminum;
  • copper.

Compound

Depending on the bonding of the sheets, there are:

  1. Standing fold- vertically located to the plane of the base;
  2. Reclining fold- horizontally located to the plane of the base.

Also distinguish:

  • Simple fold, in which a single fold of the edge of the sheet is carried out;
  • Double fold, having two folds of the edge of the sheet.
  • In addition to the usual, there are self-locking folds, thanks to which the process of joining the sheets is very fast and no mechanical tools are required.

Copper seam roof

  • Copper- soft and malleable metal, which has the ability to repel not only water, but also dirt, therefore, the appearance of mold and mildew is excluded in its structure.

By modern standards, seam copper roofing is the leader among coatings. Let's try to figure out why most buyers choose such a roof.

  1. Lightweight way of processing... The material bends easily to the desired shape. This plasticity facilitates the installation of a copper roof.
  2. Environmentally friendly material... Copper roofing does not require the addition of additional impurities to its composition, since copper is a fairly strong and solid material by its nature. A harmful effect on humans and the world around them is excluded.
  3. Availability... Unlike any other shingle, copper does not need renovation. Buying a metal roof, you save on subsequent repairs.
  4. Anti-corrosion properties... Due to its natural tightness, copper does not lend itself to temporary changes. In order not to spoil the roof, it is important not to use non-copper products as additional fasteners.
  5. Heat resistance... The roof fully complies with the principles of organizing a fire safety system.
  6. Heat conductivity... The roof is universal: it heats the house in winter, cools in summer.
  7. Resistance to atmospheric vibrations... The material tolerates temperature extremes well. Copper can easily withstand temperatures below minus 70 ° Celsius.
  8. Reliability... The material does not require any special processing. The natural protective film of the metal and the additional factory coating make the seam roofing resistant to natural influences.
  9. Ease of care... Roofs do not accumulate bacteria and dirt. Normal rain helps to clear the roof from dirt.
  10. Long service life... The material will last for more than one century without losing its operational properties.
  11. Aesthetic look... The beautifully embossed copper cladding enriches the exterior of the building, making it more stylish and attractive.

Preparatory work

  • Before installing the seam covering, it is necessary to prepare the roof for installation. It will be necessary. Be careful in the calculations, due to inaccuracies in the calculations, the roof may come out skewed, which will lead to deformation and loss of tightness of the roof.

Before the installation device, form the rafters according to the requirements:

  • Choose a quality wood frame material. The rafters must support the weight of the roof.
  • Treat the wood with special protection from external influences and antiseptic to prevent damage by insects. Repeat the procedure at least 2 times.

Antiseptic treatment of rafters is the best way to extend their lifespan

  • Install the battens tightly and evenly at the same distance. Make plans for the flooring in advance to avoid calculation errors.
  • Preparatory work requires special attention. The distance between the rafters should be narrow so that the structure can withstand the coating.

A properly organized foundation and rafters provide additional protection from wind and cold.

Advice! If you want to prevent the formation of ice on the surface in winter, you can install an electric roof heating system.

Before installing a new roof, you need to take care of protecting the wood from moisture. For this, a special waterproofing membrane is laid on the exposed frame.

Tools for installing seam roofing

The most important tool for installing a seam roof is a rolling machine. It allows you to accurately determine the size of the roof and make high-quality cutting of sheets.

The professional way of slicing has a number of advantages over the manual one:

  • Individual cuts increase the tightness of the roof.
  • The rolling method reduces the amount of waste materials.
  • The cutter with a special cutter has an increased cutting accuracy, which affects the appearance of the facade.

In addition to the metal sheets of the seam roofing, you will need fasteners. Choose 2 types of clamps: movable and fixed. You will need 4 pieces per square meter of roof.

Important! If copper is used as roofing, the fixings must also be copper to avoid possible chemical reactions between the metals.

Interesting to know! Manufacturing plants are releasing a new type of seam roofing - self-locking. In the process of installing this type of roof, you don't even need a hammer.

Do-it-yourself seam roof installation

After completing the installation of the rafter system, you can proceed to the direct laying of the sheets, which is carried out according to the general rules for laying the roof. To achieve long-term roof performance, there are some details to consider:

  • Mark the sheets evenly. The maximum distance between fixings should not exceed 40 cm.
  • Installation time depends on the experience of the master and the scale of the work. For a small house, a team of specialists will be able to install the roof in just one day.
  • If this is your first time installing a roof, take your time. Follow the rule "measure seven times, cut once."

Installation of metal sheets of seam roofing is carried out both on a pre-made lathing and on a flat base and is reduced to joining the sheets into a single structure by means of a seaming machine or a hand tool.

  1. First, a layer of waterproofing anti-condensation membrane is laid on the base.
  2. On the waterproofed base, the roofing sheets are then alternately laid and sequentially connected by folding. To do this, at the joints under one of the sheets to be joined, a clamp is placed and fixed with dowels, nails or other fasteners on the base.
  3. Then the free part of the clamp is rolled into a seam seam formed by overlapping two adjacent roofing sheets using a seaming machine or a hand tool (two mallets).

Thus, a single durable waterproof structure is obtained, which does not have a single hole on its surface.

If the installation is done correctly and the roofing sheets are firmly pressed against the base, then the roof will be reliable for many years to come.

Installation methods

Installation of seam roofing can be done in two ways. Each method provides for a specific sequence of work. Installation instructions for standing seam roofing using traditional technology are performed in the following sequence:

  • All roofing elements are manufactured according to the drawings. Small and large folds are cut out.
  • Finished sheets are raised to the roof and fixed with clamps.
  • After the completion of the work, residual materials are covered, and other protruding parts of the roof.
  • For roofs with large slopes, sheets are used, the length of which can reach 10 meters or more. Their installation takes longer due to the bulkiness of the materials. For such work, several people will be needed, since it is almost impossible to lift the sheet on the roof alone.

Time does not stand still, and the traditional methods of styling are being replaced by modern ones. So, some types of standing seam roofs are mounted in a roll method, which greatly facilitates the installation.

Vertically rolling metal sheets do not require horizontal cutting and additional fasteners. This method allows you to protect the roof from leaks.

Remember to use silicone sealant when joining sheets with a seam seam. This will provide the roof with reliable protection against leaks.

The modern method of laying has several advantages over the traditional method:

  • It is possible to adjust the length of the sheets.
  • Marking and cutting are done with a rolling machine.
  • Minimal use of connecting fixtures.
  • The small size of the roofing sheets simplifies the work of the master. There is no need to load huge plates onto the roof. Any length can be made according to an individual sketch, which improves the appearance of the house.

Skate and abutment device

When the installation of the main surface of the roof is completed, the master proceeds to the device of the ridge at the junction of the roof. The ridge is fixed with self-tapping screws.

Further, at the joints of pipes and walls, an adjoining strip is installed. To avoid leaks during rain, the adjoining bar is installed closer to the wall, closing all holes. Usually, silicone adhesive sealant is used to fix it.

In accordance with safety regulations, the roof railing should be installed at an angle of 12 degrees.

Snow protectors for standing seam roofs

Seam roofing is a smooth material, therefore, the organization of snow-proof devices is additionally required. Stop mounts are needed not only for the sake of maintaining coverage, but also for human safety. The standard snow guard is 3 meters long.

  1. The most popular are tubular structures, installed parallel to each other. The pipes can withstand any stress.
  2. Another option is brackets installed perpendicular to the slope. The distance between the holes is adjustable depending on the length of the slope and the size of the roof itself.

Advice! In order not to make a mistake with the installation and to protect yourself and others from falling snow, when buying snow guards, consult the seller about the method of placing the pipes.

Experts with extensive experience in roofing work recommend that you not undertake to lay the roof yourself without a minimum of construction experience. If you decide to install a seam roof with your own hands, then follow the advice of the masters:

Due to the wavy shape of the seamed roof, the roof of your house will always be distinguished by its unique design

Seam roofing has been successfully used for more than one century, but for a long time builders preferred other types of roofs, and only now interest in this roof has grown again. The obvious proof is a large number of houses in Russia with a durable and beautiful metal coating above the walls.
