“Where it’s simple, there are about a hundred angels…. From the memories of the elder Ambrose See what it is "Where it is simple, there are about a hundred angels." in other dictionaries

Where it is simple, there are about a hundred angels, and where it is tricky, there is not a single one. (elder Ambrose Optinsky)

On the northern island, distant, three elders prayed in tears:
"There are Three of you in Heaven, there are three of us. Have mercy, God save us!
Do not forget yet the unfortunate, the widows and the sick, and the orphans.
Have mercy on us, Lord, fallen ones, who will raise their hands to You! "

From morning until night, three gray-haired people are kneeling in tears.
And they pray, they pray, they pray for the world that is bogged down in sins.

Somehow a merchant ship was sailing on the sea. There is a bishop on it.
Wearing golden crosses and awards, he sailed to his monastery.

And then suddenly I recognized about the elders. He instantly hurries to the captain.
"Respect! I will never forget, people talk about a miracle!"
Swam to the island, then. The priest comes out. And so:
Three old men in tattered dresses, dazzle with gray beards.

They fell at the priest's feet, and the hands are kissing him.
But the priest raised them: "What are you! Tell your life!
How do you feed here on a distant, forgotten island?
Do you speak all your prayers? What psalms do you sing? "

The eyes lowered their hearts, and quietly one says:
"We do not know the Psalms, Vladyka. Our prayer is simple:
Oh, Life-giving Trinity! Save this world to the end! "

"Is that all? - the bishop in surprise. - Well, I will teach you
The main prayer of the Lord, this is like a ray!
And in the cold it warms, in the heat it gives relief.
It cuts off enemies like a sword, and leads directly to the Truth. "

And now, after an hour or two, the ship returned to its course.
And the elders recited a prayer, baptizing those sailing away ...

On deck, it’s nice, calm, it’s dawn time.
The stern priest thought, quietly sitting down at the stern.

Everything looks and he looks into the sea. And thoughts float in silence.
"And what kind of light dot is there, getting closer and closer to me?
But what is there for a bright cloud as if running behind us?
How wonderfully it flares up, like a ray of heaven, light It!

Queen of Heaven, Mother! Three elders are running on the water!
Save and have mercy on the Almighty. All three are following the wave! "

When they reached the boat on the water, they call the priest. Shouting:
"Forgive you despicable old people, forgive us for Christ's sake!
We have forgotten the Main Prayer, because the memory has let us down.
You repeat it, father, remind the Holy Words! "

The priest fell to his knees, his face was already in tears, and reads:
"Oh, wonderful humble elders, it is not for me, however, to teach you.
One and your prayer, the Lord heard you long ago!
Pray as before, brothers. So God, it is destined to see. "

The elders resigned themselves humbly, and again walked on the water.
And above them, sparkling with rays, the radiance shone in the darkness.

Philosophy is science
about the delusions of human thought. **

Once upon a time there was a Simple and a Sage. The sage was nicknamed for his intelligence and extensive knowledge of the sciences. The simple man did not have such education. Although he very much loved to listen to the Sage's deep reflections on various phenomena of life, he himself understood very little of this.
Once they walked along the road to the Temple. At first, the path was smooth and comfortable, and it was easy and pleasant to walk along it. But then pits, potholes, puddles and impassable mud began to appear on the way. It became very difficult to walk.
“It cannot be that the road to the Temple was so deserted,” said the Sage. - Probably, people go to the Temple in a different way.
“But I don’t see anything else,” replied the Simple. - On the left - an insurmountable destructive swamp, on the right - the dense Philosophical Forest, there will not be long to get lost.
- Nothing he is dense! Look how many paths there are! It cannot be that at least one of them did not lead to the Temple, - objected the Sage.
- How do you know which path is correct?
- I have a compass. I will determine the azimuth - and I will not be mistaken. It's so good in this forest, look how beautiful it is! Went!
- No, I don't understand these compasses and azimuths. I trust my eyes more than any scientific tricks there. When you walk along the road, you always see the Temple in front of you, and in the forest there are only trees around! Therefore, I will go straight, and I hope that I will overcome all difficulties with God's help.
- Well as you know! If you want to knead the dirt - it's your business. Apparently, this is a road especially for people like you - simpletons and ignoramuses.
And they each went their own way. A simple man - on a straight, but difficult road through holes, but bumps making his way, puddles, mud trying to get around. Although the road turned out to be difficult, it soon led to the Temple. The Simple One washed the roadside mud in a stream, and entered the Temple.
And the Sage walks through the forest, admires the flowers, listens to the birds, and eats raspberries. Well, it's nice to walk along forest paths - no dirt, no dust, only green grass-ant tickles your feet, but pleases the eye. And there are so many paths! One is more tempting than the other! The sage does not choose the road anyhow, but according to the scientific: he checks with a compass, tries to walk in azimuth. I went down one path - but soon she turned in a completely different direction. I went to the second - again, not the same. Already many paths went, but none of them led to the temple. The Sage was displeased: he spent so much time looking for the right road - and all in vain. It's nice to be in the forest, of course, but I really want to get to the Temple. A simple man, an ignoramus, already, I suppose, has been standing in the Temple for a long time, praying. And he, so wise and educated, wanders around in the forest, he cannot find the path he needs. The Sage got tired of it in the end, he prayed: "Lord, help me to reach the Temple!" Yes, and went straight along the desired azimuth, through an impassable thicket, windbreak, and swamps. He tore all his clothes, scratched his legs and hands, almost drowned in a swamp, but he got to the Temple with God's help. Thank God!

* - The title of the parable contains the first part of the saying of St. Ambrose of Optina "Where it is simple - there are about a hundred Angels, and where it is tricky - there is not a single one."

** - The words of the scientist Archbishop Vladimir, formerly an inspector and professor in St. Petersburg, were taken as an epigraph. Academy. To quote this story in full:

The archbishop came to the seminary for an examination in philosophy. The best student was summoned. He boldly answered his ticket. And then the bishop asked him a question:
- Tell me: what is philosophy?
The best student immediately recalled its definition in the textbook and boldly began: "Philosophy is the science of being and its essence," etc., etc.
- And you taught all this?
“Yes,” the young philosopher replied in bewilderment.
- And crammed?
The seminarist said nothing.
- So forget all this. I'll tell you what philosophy is. Philosophy is the science of the errors of human thought.

Spiritual conversations with pilgrims

And van Mikhailovich Kontsevich during the war in 1915 spent his summer holidays in Optina Pustyn. The daily visit to the skete was always instructive for the young student, but the elders, busy with visiting visitors who came to them with all sorts of sorrows, did not specifically devote time to the young newcomer. They gave him "for education" to Father Joseph (Polevoy), experienced in spiritual life, who had lived in Optina for decades. In the world - the director of a bank, he was a widely educated person. During the two months that I.M. spent in Optina, often, after church services, Fr. Joseph invited I. M. to his cell. In a conversation with him, the spiritual world was revealed to the young student.

From about. Joseph I.M. heard an incident from the life of Elder Ambrose, which did not appear in his life story. Once Elder Ambrose, bent over, leaning on a stick, was walking from somewhere along the road to the skete. Suddenly he saw a picture: a loaded cart was standing, a dead horse was lying nearby, and a peasant was crying over it. The loss of a horse-nurse in a peasant life is a sheer misfortune! Approaching the fallen horse, the Elder began to walk around it slowly three times. Then, taking a twig, he lashed the horse, shouting at it: "Get up, lazy!", And the horse obediently rose to its feet.

The elder taught the people with folk proverbs and sayings with his inherent humor. He put the deepest wisdom in well-aimed and witty words, for easier assimilation and memorization.

For example, “Where it’s simple, there are about a hundred angels, and where it’s tricky, there’s not a single one.” "Do not boast of peas that you are better than beans: if you get wet, you will burst yourself." “Why is a person bad? “Because he forgets that God is above him.” “He who thinks about himself that he has something will lose.” "Good to speak is to scatter silver, but prudent silence is gold."

To one person who was ashamed to confess a sin, he said: "Sidor and Karp live in Kolomna, but who does not happen to sin and trouble?" She burst into tears, threw herself at the Elder's feet, and confessed her sin. "The Apostle Peter leads the righteous into the kingdom of God, and the Queen of Heaven herself leads the sinful."

On All Saints' Day, Father said: "All of them were, like us, sinful people, but they repented and, having taken up the work of salvation, did not look back like Lot's wife." To the remark that we are all looking back, Batiushka explained: “that's why they urge us on with rods and a whip, that is, sorrow and troubles, so that they do not look back. "

The Elder, who condemned others, said: “... they may have such a secret good that redeems all the other shortcomings in them, and which you do not see. You have a lot of sacrifice ability. But the Lord said: I want mercy, not sacrifice. And you have little mercy ... You see your sacrifices and you are exalted by them. Humble yourself more in spirit - humility and deeds replaces. Endure all adversity and surrender to God. " With these and many other words, the elder taught and saved the people who came to him.
