Bulk ceiling. Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling: an excellent finishing option

Surprisingly, liquid ceiling wallpaper can be applied to any base, even small irregularities will be hidden.

Ceiling decoration is not an unimportant stage in the renovation of a room. The appearance of the room will depend on the quality of the finish. The usual painting of ceilings or whitewashing are a thing of the past. Even few people are gluing wallpaper to the ceiling. Suspended and stretch ceilings have become a kind of commonplace, but applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling is still a curiosity used by designers. To create a single picture in the interior, it is necessary to decorate not only our ceiling with liquid wallpaper, but of course the walls as well. Or at least the elements of the walls.

Suitable as a decoration in absolutely any living space. Even where there is a lot of humidity - and these are the bathrooms, there is. But at the same time, they are still a hundred percent well-absorbing type of finish, therefore they will not be suitable for a kitchen ceiling, since they will absorb odors and fumes from the stove. If you decide to apply them to the ceiling, no matter what, you need to apply a clear varnish on top.

Helpful information:

Primer application

The base that will be under the liquid wallpaper must necessarily have a uniform absorbency and one color scheme. If the ceilings are simply putty or plaster, then this is not enough. It is imperative to apply primer. This is done so that the ceilings do not get dusty, and the plaster or putty does not crumble.

It is not necessary to specially prepare the ceiling for applying the primer. If it has already been putty, then it is necessary to prime it several times. To do this, apply the first layer of primer - this is necessarily deep penetration. It will bond your filler to the floor slabs more firmly and help fill in any pores that have formed during the ceiling leveling process. As a result, it is worth priming the ceilings several times. Taking breaks between stages for 3 - 5 hours.

IMPORTANT! If you decide to apply the primer to the ceilings with a roller, then each layer should lie perpendicular to the previous one. This will help to more evenly distribute the soil around the perimeter and will give a solid solid surface on which you can already apply liquid wallpaper without fear.

Many people also use PVA glue instead of a primer. It should be white and it is not recommended to add any colors to it. You can add only in those cases when you want to apply, for example, yellow liquid wallpaper to the ceiling, then you can add a yellow color scheme to PVA, which will match the color of your future ceiling.

IMPORTANT! The primer on the ceiling must be applied very carefully. You must avoid dripping and drooping drops. The mixture should be more thoroughly smoothed over the surface.

After you make sure that the primed ceiling is completely dry, you can start applying liquid wallpaper. If you want to create some kind of application, then before applying it is necessary to make the appropriate markup.

In order to form a transition strip from the ceiling to the walls, it is necessary to choose a neutral transition color. Such a transitional barrier is made quite easily. A dividing strip 35-50 centimeters wide is drawn on the ceiling, masking tape is applied along the edges and liquid wallpaper can be applied directly along it to the ceiling from the outside of the sector that we will fill with wallpaper in the first place.

Many artists make ceilings simple. But such drawings are made according to special templates that are prepared in advance from fairly thick sheets of paper. All templates are fixed to the ceiling with tape.

How to make liquid wallpaper

Each package contains instructions that must be studied and done only as it is written there. As a result, you will get a good quality mortar and the correct consistency.

In simple terms, the contents of the package just need to be poured into a bowl with the required amount of water. Everything is mixed and you must wait until the glue begins to swell. After that, the mixture must be thoroughly mixed a second time. For all its simplicity, there are some rules for mixing liquid wallpaper:

  • Each bag should be mixed separately and in a clean container.
  • Kneading is done only by hand; tools can damage the binder fibers.
  • If there are some decorative additives in the bag, then we pour them into the water first and stir thoroughly. Only after that liquid wallpaper is added.
  • Several servings can only be mixed when they have already been infused and a sticky mass has formed.

You should not buy the solution end-to-end, some should remain. Because in the future, you will not pick up the exact shade and as a result, a stain on the ceiling may turn out that differs from the rest of the area.

There should always be a margin, since no one guarantees that you will apply it with high quality the first time. As a result, part of the process will be spoiled, because we do everything with our own hands, and even more so for the first time, everything can be.

Technology for applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling

Before proceeding with application to the ceiling, it is necessary to determine the viscosity and check how well they will adhere to the surface to be pasted. If you see that the wallpaper is distributed rather difficultly, then you have made a thick solution and you need to add a little water and mix again.

Do not add too much water right away, as then you will need to wait until the excess moisture evaporates. For applying liquid wallpaper, it is advisable to use a special wide grater. The mixture is applied to the ceiling with a small patch, and then, using a float, it is pounded to the required area and to the required thickness.

Professionals use trowels with narrow blades. With them, it is much easier to see, after each hand movement, how the fibers are distributed. They are often used. With all this, the work is greatly simplified, since the solution is distributed over the entire surface quite easily and quickly.

IMPORTANT! To make the view beautiful, the wallpaper on the ceiling should be rubbed in a circular motion with a float. As a result, the fibers will lay down randomly and the surface will appear uniform.

Try to bring the piece to the final effect right away. When the liquid wallpaper on the ceiling is distributed in the required layer, it is best to level it with an additional wide trowel. To improve sliding, it must first be moistened with water. After you have filled in the required area, you can do some kind of test for the quality of the work performed. To do this, just turn on the chandelier and illuminate the finished piece with side lighting. All irregularities will immediately be shaded, and it will be seen whether you smoothed it well enough or not.

At the end of the work, you must wait until everything is completely dry. It is interesting that liquid wallpaper is not at all afraid of drafts, unlike. Liquid wallpaper dries excellently and adheres even in the most unfavorable conditions, in which ordinary wallpaper is not able to stick normally.

You should never throw away the remnants of the liquid wallpaper mixture. After complete drying, some flaws in the work done may appear. This is where the leftovers will be saved, with the help of which you can eliminate the shortcomings.

It happens that the walls or ceiling are subject to mechanical damage. In this case, a large enough piece can be peeled off and a new layer of old remnants can be formed on the damaged area. Old liquid wallpaper on the ceiling is moistened with water and can be easily removed with an ordinary spatula. We re-fill the area we need.

After traditional whitewashing, this is the most economical way to decorate a room. Next, we will learn more about this material. The article will also talk about how to make the ceiling with liquid wallpaper.

What is the reason for the popularity of the material?

What is good about liquid wallpaper on the ceiling? Customer reviews indicate that one of the main advantages of the material is its cost. Despite being economical, the coating looks very original. It is not difficult to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling. As the owners of living quarters themselves say, the process of decorating with this material is even easier than with plaster or paint. What other advantages does liquid wallpaper on the ceiling have? Consumer reviews contain information about the environmental friendliness of the material. After all, it contains natural ingredients. These include, in particular, silk and cotton fibers, which are constituents of the pulp and paper base. The composition of the material also includes acrylic components for bonding, adhesives, dyes and special decorative elements.

Application features

The material is usually used to decorate rooms with low humidity. Liquid wallpaper is applied to the ceiling of the kitchen, bedroom, hallway, living room. Surfaces such as drywall, plaster, concrete are suitable for decoration. Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling will perfectly fit after staining. It is not recommended to decorate wood, plastic, metal surfaces that have not been pre-treated with a primer with the material. Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling can be applied to plain and effect-producing fabrics. If the room is decorated in a classic style, the material may look like a stucco molding. In this case, the addition of bronze or silver threads allows you to get a very original coating. It will perfectly combine with fragments of a plain surface. In addition, you can make original drawings on the ceiling with liquid wallpaper. For this, stencils and simple tools will come in handy.

History reference

Back in the distant 15th century, Charles VII ordered the restoration of the captured castle. Only three days were allocated for the decoration. In the city where this castle was located, silk was produced. However, due to hostilities, all equipment was destroyed, and further manufacture became impossible. The craftsmen decided to use the remaining silk in decoration. The webs were crushed and flour was added as a binder. The resulting mass was mixed well and diluted with water. This mixture was used to decorate the entire castle. The originality of the solution and the beauty of the decor amazed Charles VII. There was no one indifferent to such decoration, but knowledge and technology remained. This is how the original textile coating began its existence, which subsequently became widespread in Europe. It should be noted that, for example, in Moscow the Bolshoi Theater is decorated with liquid wallpaper.

Some material properties

Liquid wallpaper got its name due to the manufacturing method. In the factory, the produced material is packed dry in bags. Before application, liquid wallpaper is diluted with water. Laying is carried out according to the technology used by decorative plaster. Because of this, the material is considered one of the varieties of this coating. Liquid wallpaper for the ceiling is a great way to economically decorate the surface. The plane looks smooth and solid, without joints or seams. Decorative silk plaster is considered a material with no expiration date. The coverage period is more than 10 years. If any area has been damaged, then it can be easily restored. The place of repair will be almost invisible. Surfaces that are most often exposed to dirt can be additionally treated with a colorless aqualak. This will reliably protect liquid wallpaper. Ceiling application can be done by one person without additional assistance. The material is odorless. The elasticity of the coating protects against cracks when the house shrinks. This is especially true in new buildings. If, nevertheless, tears appear on the surface, then it is enough to moisten the area (preferably from a spray bottle) with water, and then smooth out the damaged area. You can preserve the uniformity of the pattern using wallpaper of the same batch and batch.

Tools

For work you will need:

  • The container in which the material will swell.
  • Spatula or trowel. This tool will directly lay the material. You can make a trowel yourself. This requires a piece of plexiglass. An equilateral triangle is cut out of it, the side length of which is 5-6 cm. A handle is screwed to the plexiglass.
  • Rubber or foam roller.
  • Plastic graters.
  • Spray.
  • Embossed roller.

The number of wallpapers is calculated in accordance with the recommendations on the package. As a rule, one package weighing 1.7 kg is enough for 5 m 2. In this case, the layer thickness will be 1.5 mm.

Surface preparation

Before laying liquid wallpaper on the ceiling, cover the furniture and floors in the room with non-woven material or polyethylene. It is advisable to free the room from all objects altogether so that they do not interfere with the work. The old coating must be removed from the ceiling surface. Whitewash, tiles, if any, are removed. Liquid wallpaper can be applied to a surface previously painted with oil or water-dispersion compositions. First, you should clean off the existing exfoliating areas. If there are large cracks, they should be repaired with a filler and smoothed out with a float.

Primer composition

Before laying the material, the surface is covered with a special mixture. If the ceiling has previously been painted with bright oil paint, the color may be noticeable using a regular primer. In this regard, a special composition (waterproof) should be used. In this case, the process of coating with a primer itself must be carried out in two layers. Plastic surfaces must be treated with compositions based on water-dispersive components (PVA glue in particular). Metal elements are primed with oil paint or enamel. This treatment will prevent the formation of rust. Do not apply ST-17 primer. This compound can cause yellow spots. After applying the primer, it is allowed to dry. Only after that they begin to lay liquid wallpaper. Ceiling application is carried out at normal room temperature and humidity.

Preparation of material for laying

For diluting liquid wallpaper, it is best to use a plastic container. The dry mixture is poured into warm water in small portions. Its temperature should be approximately 25 degrees. If it is necessary to give a shade to the coating, a dye is also added to the container. The mass is mixed until the consistency of thick sour cream. After that, the solution is left to swell. The infusion time is usually indicated on the package. Before laying, the mass is thoroughly mixed again. For uniformity of shade, it is recommended to combine material from different packages. There are also ready-made mixtures on sale. They are for those who have never done decoration in this way and who doubt their abilities. If there is any residue after application of the material, it can be closed tightly with a lid and stored for several months.

Types of material stacking

There are two ways to apply liquid wallpaper: manual and mechanical. Briefly, the first method is to throw the mortar onto the surface and then level it with a trowel, float or roller. Professionals often use a spray gun in their work. This method also smoothes the mixture. Textured finishing can be done with a relief roller, and the usual one - with a tool with a hard fur coat. The pattern is rolled seven hours after the coating is laid. Next, we will consider in more detail the methods of applying liquid wallpaper.

Laying by hand

  • A small part of the swollen mass should be taken from the container and applied to the ceiling. Spread the layer evenly. Its thickness is 1-4 mm.
  • The surface is leveled with a smooth float. After that, the next portion of the material is applied. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the boundaries between the sections are not visible.
  • Depending on the direction of smoothing, the position of the fibers will be formed. When changing the trajectory of movement, you can achieve the desired decorative effect.
  • During the day after laying the material, the adhesive composition will polymerize. In this regard, the coating should not be subjected to mechanical stress.

Mechanical stacking of material

Work is carried out using a spray bottle. Professionals also use a compressor with a working pressure of 0.5 MPa. The capacity of the unit must be more than 400 l / min. In a spray gun, the nozzle should have a diameter of 5 to 10 mm. The size will depend on the texture of the coating. Coating flow is controlled by changing the volume of water added to the mixture. With a spray gun, first apply a layer of 1.5 mm on the entire surface of the ceiling. After it dries, the material is sprayed again. This gives the coating the required thickness. If you spray with one thick layer at once, then the material is likely to slide off the surface.

Finally

The ceiling covered with liquid wallpaper looks original and aesthetically pleasing. The material is fireproof, perfectly tolerates temperature extremes. The mixture contains antifungal components that prevent mold from forming when the humidity in the room rises. Another undoubted advantage of the material is that it does not fade from prolonged use. All components are hypoallergenic. Therefore, people prone to allergies do not have to worry about their health. You can work with the material without protective equipment (bare hands without gloves). After installation, there is no dirt and dust. This allows the occupants of the house to stay indoors throughout the entire process. Liquid wallpaper is considered a versatile material. With their help, you can decorate a room in a variety of styles. When laying, there is no need to additionally press the material against the base for a tighter fixation. It is enough to smooth out the composition with the available tools. The rest of the material can be used at least 4 times. Liquid wallpaper can act as additional noise and heat insulation of the room. This is achieved due to the fibrous composition of the material. After drying, during the entire period of operation, dust does not accumulate on the coating. In addition, liquid wallpaper has anti-static properties. The surface covered with the material does not require special care. It is enough to carry out regular wet cleaning. It can be vacuum cleaned to keep the coating clean.

This versatile material is used for indoor wall and ceiling surfaces. Its advantage is that it combines well with other types of finishes. The coating can be applied to any surface, even curved surfaces. The end result is a seamless and uniform finish. We will tell you how to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling, what types of this material exist, and how to properly prepare the surface for application.

Types of liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper is a mixture of additives, textile fibers and cellulose. They are sold as a ready-to-use liquid mixture or as a dry formulation to be mixed with water before use. Since the technology of their application is similar to plaster, the material is called silk plaster.

There are several types of liquid wallpaper for the ceiling:

  • by type of surface they are divided into embossed and smooth (it all depends on the size of the fibers used);
  • the color of the material is white and colored (if necessary, the white mass is tinted to obtain the required shade);
  • the mixture is homogeneous or with special additives to obtain a specific texture;
  • by composition, wallpapers are divided into cellulose products, cotton coverings, mixed and silk compositions.

Depending on the size of the fibers, the liquid wallpaper on the ceiling has some texture. The coarser the fibers, the rougher the surface is. In addition, a special application technique is used to obtain a relief. For this, a textured roller is passed over the damp surface of the wallpaper. As a result, a relief pattern remains on the coating.

Thanks to the large assortment of colors, it is not difficult to choose the coating to match the color of the entire interior. If it is not possible to choose the desired color of the ceiling, then the white composition is tinted with water-soluble pigments. Ceiling decoration with liquid wallpaper can have a certain effect depending on the additives used.
The following components are commonly used:

  • cotton or silk threads;
  • metallic sequins;
  • stone chips;
  • cellulose fibers of different sizes.

Important! The appearance of the coating largely depends on the material that is the basis of the wallpaper. The characteristics, price and durability of the product depend on this.

Cellulose

This is a budget type of coverage. It uses cheap raw materials:

  • cellulose fibers;
  • plasticizers;
  • dyes;
  • adhesive components;
  • sometimes supplements.

Features of cellulose products:

  • good adhesion to the surface due to the presence of cellulose, which provides better adhesion;
  • wallpaper fade quickly, so it is better to use it in a corridor where the sun's rays do not penetrate.

Cotton

Such a liquid ceiling is distinguished by a matte sheen and soft structure. This is achieved due to the presence of cotton fibers in the composition. The coating has high sound and heat insulation characteristics. This eco-friendly coating is often used in bedrooms and children's rooms.

Silk

The most expensive renovation is done with silk wallpaper. The material contains natural silk fibers.

The advantages of such a ceiling decoration with liquid wallpaper:

  • attractive appearance;
  • durability of the coating;
  • material strength;
  • the surface has a beautiful characteristic gloss;
  • resistance to fading (the coating is allowed to be used in rooms with panoramic windows);
  • thanks to the additives, the effect of a textile finish or an exact imitation of marble is obtained.

Mixed

Repairing ceilings with mixed liquid wallpaper has its advantages. Since fabric and cellulose fibers are used in the composition of the material, it is possible to obtain a beautiful coating for little money. The cost of a mixed product depends on the percentage of cotton and silk fibers, as well as the presence of decorative additives.

Advice! If you want a wallpaper with a decorative effect, you can add metallic glitter, mineral additives and other ingredients yourself.

Advantages and disadvantages of liquid wallpaper

Gluing liquid wallpaper on the ceiling provides the following advantages:

  1. This environmentally friendly and harmless coating does not interfere with the surface under it to carry out air exchange, absorb and release moisture.
  2. You get a seamless, uniform finish that hides imperfections in the subfloor well.
  3. The surface for gluing liquid wallpaper does not need complex preparation.
  4. On the basis of any configuration, the coating lays down evenly, without creases and folds.
  5. By adding pigments and additional components, you can get a material with different effects.
  6. There are wallpapers with a smooth or embossed texture.
  7. Possibility of local repair. Only the damaged area is being redone, there is no need to remove and re-glue the entire coating.

The disadvantages of this material include the following:

  1. Compared to ordinary wallpaper, this is a very expensive finish, because the price can be five times higher.
  2. The coating is not resistant to moisture, therefore, after getting wet, it easily falls off.
  3. Cellulose wallpapers lose their attractiveness over time as they fade.
  4. Their installation requires certain skills.

Some material flaws can be easily compensated for. For example, to increase the moisture resistance of the surface, it is coated with acrylic varnish. Coatings containing at least 40 percent of cotton and silk fibers will last longer.

Technology for applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling

Do-it-yourself ceiling decoration with liquid wallpaper is carried out in two stages:

  • first prepare the surface of the base;
  • then the prepared composition is applied.

Important! The durability of the coating and its adhesion to the base surface depend on the quality of the preparation of the base.

Ceiling surface preparation

The easiest way is to prepare a ceiling in a new building with a rough finish. It is enough to prime the surface.
If there is an old coating on the ceiling, then the preparatory work is as follows:

  1. Old wallpaper is moistened and removed with a spatula. Whitewash or interior paint must be cleaned off. Depending on the composition used, use special washes or plain water. Enamels and acrylic paints are cleaned with a grinder or spatula.
  2. Rust, mildew and water stains must be washed off. To do this, use a weak solution of phosphoric or hydrochloric acid. Alkaline solutions are used to remove grease stains. Water stains are washed off with a detergent.
  3. All cracks and holes are sealed with mortar and putty. Use only moisture resistant polymer or cement based fillers.
  4. After that, the ceiling is primed in three layers and dried.

Calculation of the required amount of material

As a rule, on the packaging with the composition, its approximate consumption is indicated, taking into account the thickness of the coating. Usually the mixture is applied in a layer 0.1-0.15 cm thick, so one kilogram is enough for 3-6 squares of the ceiling. The exact consumption depends on the texture of the mixture.

Important! Please note that any imperfections and unevenness on the base surface will increase the consumption of the mixture.

To calculate the amount of material, divide the ceiling area by the area to be covered, which is indicated by the manufacturer on the dry package. Round the resulting number up to the nearest whole value. With a slight discrepancy in the color of the dry mixture, it can be mixed in one container and diluted with water during preparation.

Applying wallpaper to the ceiling

In the course of work, adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. First, the dry mass is diluted with water and waited for its swelling. The waiting time is usually indicated on the package and ranges from a quarter of an hour to several hours. The optimum water temperature is 20-25 degrees. If necessary, coloring pigments are added to the water. You can also add decorative additives to the solution and mix. At the end, add the dry wallpaper mix. After stirring, wait for the indicated time and stir the solution again. It is now ready to use.
  2. The texture of the wallpaper depends on the direction in which you apply the mixture. It is especially important to take this into account when applying a mass with coarse fibers.
  3. Before applying the liquid composition on the ceiling, you need to fix all the decorative elements and ceiling plinths. Because then they cannot be glued to the porous surface of the coating.
  4. The mixture is applied with a wide spatula in the thinnest layer and smoothed well with a roller or plastic float. The material is glued in separate sections, leveling their borders well.
  5. It is better if you process the entire ceiling in one go. This will avoid the appearance of visible parcel boundaries.
  6. To apply the mixture, you can use not a spatula, but a spray gun with an expanded nozzle. The resulting rough coating is rolled with a textured or hard roller.
