How and how can you update the color of old wooden doors: ideas

girl paints an old wooden interior door with white paint

After you have completed the restoration work on the surface of the old interior door, choose a new color for it.

Among the ways that can help you in this moment, we note:

  • Painting with stain, paint or opening the wooden surface of the door with varnish.
    Remember, for the best result, brush along the fibers, then all the gaps will be filled with the dye.
  • Accents on moldings, or painting the protruding parts of the door with contrasting or similar colors. In the absence of such elements, glue them from wooden or polyurethane strips and paint.
  • Artistic painting, coloring through stencils.
    The method is suitable for creative owners who want to bring originality to their interior.
  • Sticking wallpaper, large drawings on paper, pieces of fabric. Decoupage.
    In this case, follow all the requirements for fixing the material on the surface of the door - soak with water, glue, process from above with a stream of hot air.
  • Stained glass painting.
    If you are good at drawing or have stocked up with interesting stencils, buy special stained glass paints and decorate the glass elements of your old door.
  • Gluing vinyl stickers.
    Note that this method saves you time preparing the old door. In other words, you can not even remove it from the hinges, but immediately glue the vinyl elements.

How and with what can you renovate varnished doors?

a man removes the old lacquer coating from the doors for their restoration according to a new design

To carry out restoration work, remove the old varnish from the door in one or more of the following ways:

  • sandpaper
  • grinder
  • chemical solvent

The first method was discussed in the previous section. The second method will significantly speed up the process of removing the old varnish. And the third has one nuance - the varnish can remain selectively on the door leaf. Therefore, be sure to polish the latter.

After removing the old layer of varnish, sanding and drying the doors, decide on their new design, for example:

  • apply new varnish or laminate,
  • paint in the desired color,
  • apply wallpaper / photo wallpaper or other imitation self-adhesive tape, for example, under a natural wood,
  • apply painting by hand, copying a specific drawing, or under a stencil,
  • decorate the door by gluing loose cereals - rice, buckwheat. Be sure to apply a layer of varnish on top for better fixation of the material.

How and how can veneer doors be updated?

photo of renovated old veneer doors

One of the most common problems with veneer doors is the swelling of the leaf in certain areas. Therefore, first prepare it, carry out restoration measures before updating.

To eliminate the problem of swelling of the canvas will help:

  • Iron.
    Heat it on medium and iron the swollen surface of the door folded on a horizontal stand.
  • Wet rags.
    Moisten a cloth rag with water and spread it over the problematic surface of the door. After a quarter of an hour, remove and wait until dry.
  • PVA glue.
    Draw it into a syringe and carefully insert it under the swollen surface of the door. Smooth out the area with a dry cloth.

To eliminate cracks and chips on an old door made of the material in question, stock up on strips of veneer of a similar color.

  • Cut strips to match the surface to be repaired.
  • Cut off the excess with a scalpel after applying it to the chip / crack site. In doing so, keep in mind that the fibers of the patch must be perpendicular to the door being restored.
  • Treat the door leaf with a special putty and wait until it dries completely.
  • Use double-sided tape to secure the veneer strips.
  • Sand the joints.

When your old door has only minor scratches and chips, wax it:

  • liquid
  • pencil

In the first case, drop a couple of drops into the break and immediately walk with a dry cloth to remove excess. Before doing this, be sure to clean the door from dust and dirt, and also sand the surface.

In the second - tear off a piece from the wax pencil, knead it in your palms and stick it on the problem area. Wipe off the mark with a rag. Do this only on a previously cleaned and prepared door.

The following will help you to update the prepared old veneer door:

  • paint

If you've covered up chips and scratches on your door with wax, remember that varnish and paint won't cover them. Or they will stay on it for a short time, and then crumble.

How and with what can you update paneled doors?

old paneled doors after paint renewal, options in decor

Paneled doors in the interior look interesting. However, it is not always convenient to handle their frayed surface. We will not go into details. Let's dwell on the restoration options.

Successful solutions:

  • painting with several colors with highlighting protruding places
  • gluing wallpaper in segments, adhesive tapes along the contour, on panels
  • decoupage of individual segments
  • varnishing

The cardinal method is to disassemble the door leaves and replace them with laminated hardboard. To do this, you sheathe the frame of the door with it and especially carefully select the color when gluing its ends.

If there is glass in the door, paint it with special paints or simulate a stained glass window. Stencils for decor are also suitable.

How and what can you renovate painted doors?

a man paints old previously painted interior doors

  • with a spatula, go over the entire surface and remove the layer of old paint,
  • sand with sanding paper,
  • treat with a special primer for wooden surfaces,
  • let dry and sand again,

Cover the areas of the door that you do not plan to paint or open with varnish.

How and how can you update paper doors?

  • self-adhesive film
  • decoupage
  • gluing individual elements, for example, paintings, volumetric drawings

Video: how and how to update the old interroom doors?

Interior openings after renovation remain open or are closed with old doors due to the high cost of new ones, but you can always update the panels by making a decoupage of the inner door with glass with your own hands.

What is decoupage and what is the value of this type of decor?

This art of decorating various objects has existed for more than 5 centuries, and it began in Venice. The craftsmen of this city noted the high cost of Chinese household items decorated with the finest inlay or carving, but, since they did not know the technique, a skillful imitation was created. A pattern was applied to dishes or furniture, most often it was a thin fabric with some kind of pattern, and then the surface was covered with several layers of varnish. Sometimes their number reached 30 or more. Actually, in this technique, you can decorate anything, including glass. Varnishing will give it a matte finish, but at the same time the drawing will acquire depth, and at the same time will not interfere with the penetration of light.

Decoupled chest

Decoupage became widespread due to the fact that the cost of such products was significantly lower than that of Chinese household items. That is why this technique of drawing a picture followed by varnishing was at one time called the art of the poor (in Italian - arte povera). Over time, decoupage spread throughout the world, it is even known that even icons in Russia were made in this way. However, later the technique was forgotten, using less and less, and its peak of popularity arose quite recently. Given the variety of modern materials, the use of such a decor can be very versatile. It should be especially noted that this art is available to everyone, it does not require special training and any complex devices for doing it yourself.

Learning the basics of glass decorating

First of all, you should remember that you are making the decor for yourself, not for sale, and therefore it is not at all necessary to repeat the path of the Venetian masters and apply dozens of layers of varnish, you can do with one. Sometimes you need to cover the drawing itself with a special transparent decoupage glue, so that then from the back side, carefully remove part of the paper base and get the thinnest film with the image. This is mainly required when working with printer prints on thick paper, which is difficult to apply on glass due to its opacity. By impregnating the top layer where the pattern is printed with glue or varnish, you will be able to gently soak the back of the paper.

Glass plate after decoupage

It is noteworthy that, in contrast to opaque surfaces, decoupage of door glass can be either direct or reverse. The first option is standard - applying a napkin or other material with a pattern outward, in the same way, both wooden and metal household items are decorated. Another thing is the reverse application of the image, when the finishing layer is located behind the glass, turned to it with the front side. In this case, the clarity of the pattern will remain even after the application of varnish, which will cover the back of the paper or other substrate applied to the door glass. However, this option cannot be applied to matte, translucent products.

There are several styles in which the decor is performed, these are Victorian, Provence, country, the so-called shabby chic, which has existed since the late 80s, simplicity (using a minimum number of elements) and ethno... Actually, all these styles correspond to those that are used for interiors in living quarters, because it is necessary that the decorated object fit into the environment. For the rest, as already mentioned, you will not need any special devices for work, everything you need to make decoupage on a glass door with your own hands is usually at home for everyone. The main thing is paper scissors with which you will cut out the images you like. Use different-sized brushes, a paper knife, emery, a sponge and a roller. And how to apply all this - we will tell further.

How is decoupage glass done?

The simplest option is to use a special napkin or card, which is applied to the glass, like a decal. In this case, you only need to prepare the surface by degreasing it with a window cleaner and wiping it well with a clean paper towel. Then you should apply to the desired area a special glue for decoupage or any other suitable for glass, that is, one that remains transparent after drying. Now we overlay the image, in a direct or reverse way, which we talked about earlier, and then carefully align the thin paper layer with a roller, at the same time squeezing out the excess glue. With a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, we remove the glue that has come out, and if there are streaks, then we clean them with a paper knife. And it remains to cover everything with acrylic varnish.

DIY glass decoupage

It is somewhat more difficult to work with images cut from magazines or printed on a printer, since in this case the paper will be very thick. To avoid a pronounced transition from the surface to be decorated to the picture, which is called a "ledge", you need to prepare a cut piece of paper. To do this, cover the front surface of the sheet with acrylic varnish, wait for it to be absorbed and dry, cover it with a second layer and so on up to 5 times. Now we are patiently waiting for everything to completely harden, after the drawing will be firmly tacked with a transparent film, and you can soak the back layer of paper in warm water. Next, carefully clean it off with a thin sandpaper or pumice stone, the pattern will remain on a thin varnish film, which we glue to the glass in the reverse way indicated above.

If the image is not too bright, it is recommended to create a background for it using, be sure to overlay it in 2 layers after pasting the picture (but in no case before). The adhesive must dry so that the applied paper does not move during the acrylic coating process. In this case, the decoration is carried out only in the opposite way, so that the picture is pressed against the glass, and its back side, along with the other surface, is painted. Use sponge brushes, they will create a beautiful texture, in contrast to the fleecy ones, after which streaks often remain in the form of stripes. After covering with acrylic paint, after it dries, apply several layers of acrylic varnish.

To apply several images with your own hands in a specific order, on the opposite side of the glass, make markings with a washable felt-tip pen or glue a sheet of paper with risks with masking tape.

A few subtleties when decorating door glass with pictures

If you want to stick a picture from a fashionable glossy magazine, be sure to soak the page in warm water first, otherwise it will go in waves after smearing with glue. The same goes for printouts on thick printer paper. By the way, it is much easier to get high-quality and bright images on the glass of the door, using often even denser large-format photo paper for an inkjet printer. Covering it with water-free varnish and thoroughly drying it, you can tear off most of the layers of the sheet in one motion, leaving only a thin front one with a pattern. If delamination is not observed, we remove the fibers in spools, having previously soaked the sheet with a varnished front surface.

Materials and tools for decoupage

If you use special decoupage cards or napkins, it is not necessary to soak them beforehand, you can simply put them in a puddle of liquid glue, slightly immerse them in it and, taking them out with tweezers with rounded or soft tips, apply to the glass. You can also do otherwise - lightly spray a napkin from a spray bottle, and then immediately apply it to the glass of the door, which was previously greased with glue. Slightly damp paper will smooth out well with a roller or brush and will not wrinkle afterwards after drying. And finally, one more trick from the masters: before decoupage the door with a napkin with your own hands, gently smooth it out, spray it with hairspray and then smooth it with an iron.

Attention - only water-based varnishes are warped and wrinkled on napkins and rice paper, so try to use undiluted formulations.

It is worth mentioning separately which adhesives are suitable for fixing the pattern on the glass. In addition to special ones, the already mentioned acrylic varnish (only undiluted), paste, nail varnish, ordinary glue stick, PVA, wallpaper glue (again undiluted with water) and even egg white will suit you. All of them will give a thin and, most importantly, transparent layer, which is especially important when doing decoupage with your own hands using the reverse technique. Of the materials, in addition to those listed, you can also use wallpaper, postcards and photographs; after having previously varnished them, you need to process them with a thin sandpaper on the back side, carefully removing one layer of paper after another. Floral felt is also suitable for application on a flat surface, but a large amount of glue must be used for it.

Now let's talk a little about giving the decor a touch of antiquity, which is suitable for Victorian and country styles, and especially for shabby chic. It is not difficult to artificially age the image itself, it is enough to immerse it for a short time in a decoction of onion peels, tea or in freshly brewed strong grain coffee. Another option: fill a wide and flat container with turpentine, stir in it a few drops of burnt sienna oil paint, and then immerse the drawing in the resulting solution for 2 seconds. You will get a kind of old parchment with engraving. And, finally, also a rather simple way - dissolve a little bitumen in white spirit to get a pale-colored composition, which covers the already glued drawing. On the image, applied in a direct way, you can walk a couple of times with a metal brush, vertically and horizontally, this will give the effect of cracking.

All objects in the house sooner or later age, acquiring an unattractive appearance. But if the furniture can be easily replaced, and the wallpaper can be re-glued, then what to do with the doors? They are not so cheap to dismantle and buy new ones. Let's face it, considering the costs of other things during the renovation, this part doesn't feel like messing around for a long time. To avoid this, you can decorate old doors with your own hands, which, due to the large number of options, often turns into an exciting activity.

1. Painting

The best way to freshen up an old door while slightly redesigning a room is to paint it a new color. In this case, you can use one or several shades, highlighting, for example, panel parts, moldings or a frame.

Depending on the size of the room, the door can be a bright detail or blend in with the wall decoration without dividing the space. The latter option is suitable for small rooms. In such cases, give preference to light colors.

It is recommended to purchase acrylic paint, which does not leave odors, is evenly applied and does not harm health, which is important for a bedroom or nursery. But first you need to prepare your "canvas": even a few layers of paint will not hide the unevenness of the old tree. In some cases, this will require removing the doors in order to maximize all the shortcomings.

Since it is necessary to work with a wide area, the method of application is of great importance for creating a neat final look. Divide the product mentally into several small areas, evenly painting over them with even horizontal or vertical stripes. When dealing with paneled doors, cover them in the following sequence: insertion points, center planks, sides.

After complete drying, you can cover the surface with a protective varnish so that the renewed door will last even longer.

Solid colors are suitable for many styles, not because of their neutrality, but because of the brevity, restraint and simplicity that are relevant in modern interior design. You can follow fashion without large investments or experienced craftsmen.

2. Drawings and stickers

If monotonous decor is not your option, feel free to take a brush in your hands and paint your boring old door with interesting stories. People with art education can use it as a canvas, decorating with still lifes, landscapes, cartoon characters. For the rest, there are stencils or vinyl stickers - no less effective tools that will also provide a beautiful result.

In the case of stencils, the principle of operation is the same as in the first paragraph: we prepare the product, apply paint, wait for it to dry. The base can be painted or "bare", pre-treated, surface. Drawings on the texture of old wood look impressive.

3. Decoupage

This is an amazing method that, with all the simplicity of materials and ease of application, allows you to create real works of art. Decoupage is ideal for creating and decorating Provence style doors. Especially when combined with a cracking varnish, which helps to visually age objects. Floral ornaments made in this way look very sophisticated and natural, allowing you to doubt the "home" origin of the decor.

So, you will need: PVA glue, napkins, a sponge, scissors for cutting out the necessary details of the picture. On a surface previously cleaned of dust and dirt, paper is applied, after which glue is applied to it. To avoid the appearance of wrinkles or bubbles, you can smooth the picture with a sponge by removing excess liquid.

After the door has dried, and you will have to wait about a day, the drawing must be fixed with ordinary furniture varnish. Almost any material can be decorated in this way, but it is with wood that it goes best.

4. Wallpaper

It can be a shame when after the repair there are several meters of unused wallpaper. Don't throw them away - better leave them for decorating old doors! This is a completely inexpensive solution that will refresh the interior and hide the flaws of the product.

They can cover the entire area or individual details - it all depends on the image, as well as the design of the room. Some types of wallpaper have a relief structure, making the decor richer and more varied.

For a nursery or a bright interior, you can take photo wallpaper with landscapes, paintings or other doors. Small games with perspective will visually increase the space. Only the rest of its elements should balance the composition, being a neutral background.

5. Fabric

To decorate old doors, you can take the remnants of fabric, especially if they were used for upholstery. Such an intersection of drawings will look appropriate in one interior.

Either way, fabric is a textured, eye-catching solution that will surely help refresh an old piece by covering up minor imperfections. You can fix it to the door using ordinary glue or furniture clips. The second option is good because over time the boring part can be removed.

Lace is popular not only in clothing, but also in decor. Here, with their help, you can emphasize the refined taste of the owners by decorating the door with them.

6. Leather

The leather door is certainly a sign of the owners' status. It will fit more into the office space than the nursery, but because of this it becomes no less interesting as an option for decor.

According to the rules, of course, such products must be ordered in salons, always from natural materials. But for a less solid interior, a substitute is quite suitable, since it can be chosen in all possible color combinations.

For the leather you need rivets that will help it to “wrap” the door beautifully and lock. Plus, it can give the design an industrial touch that perfectly matches the loft style.

Thin leather carving or drawing will look luxurious. Another original idea: a door trimmed with old belts, but for this you will have to visit more than one flea market.

7. Mosaic

Mosaic compositions will never lose their relevance: they are beautiful, unusual and interesting to implement. It looks a bit like a puzzle, only you make up the picture yourself.

You can use ceramic, glass or acrylic parts. Make sure that all the colors for the future "picture" are enough. These can be realistic scenes, surrealism, or randomly placed elements that are fixed with ordinary glue.

You can decorate the facade, panel or doorway. Check the reliability of the product so that when the doors are suddenly closed, some part does not suddenly fall off.

8. Aging

For some styles, having elements that are literally steeped in history is the main condition. But here it is worth distinguishing between "shabby" and "luxurious" old age. We need a second view, and we will have to work on creating it.

There are many ways to artificially age furniture. Some of them are professional and not feasible under normal conditions. Others are simple tricks that successfully mimic cracked paint.

For door decoration, you can use craquelure varnish, which literally makes the paint crack. Do not forget that it is better to work with multiple layers to give more depth to your drawings.

A dry brush also copes with its mission, which fluently paints the surface, giving it a worn look.

Several layers of paint can be rubbed with sandpaper, revealing the multi-layered coating. And if in some places you rub with a wax candle, paint the door and rub, then the paint will drop off locally, also creating the desired effect.

9. Stained glass

Multicolored stained glass windows in temples, smoothly letting in light, always delight the audience. Why not try to create a faint but semblance of this beauty in your home while decorating old doors?

For this method, glass inserts are used. And here you have two options: buy a ready-made product with a picture or decorate it yourself. The latter, of course, is more interesting, but it can be implemented after some preparation.

In addition to the acrylic paints with which the drawing is applied, you will need a special contour that creates the illusion of a metal frame. The glass sheet should be in a horizontal position so that the paint does not drip over the slippery surface without having time to grab. The finished product must be installed in the panel and fixed with glazing beads.

10. Molding

Moldings will also help to decorate old doors - elements that imitate stucco molding, which is so relevant in a classic interior or Art Deco style.

The parts are usually made of foam or polyurethane and are therefore cheap but allow for truly luxurious designs. You can buy ready-made components, fix them to the door with liquid nails or glue.

Usually, door decor with moldings is not very diverse, but sometimes it turns out to stumble upon aesthetic models. They can be painted overlapping or contrasting with the main finish to achieve different effects.

From our selection you will learn how to decorate a door with your own hands in the five most accessible ways for an amateur.

How to refine the door of the house with your own hands.

Do-it-yourself door decor is a whole complex of stages, and according to the overwhelming majority of specialists, starting preparation is considered almost the most important part of the work.

As a rule, the owners decide to decorate the old doors of the house in an original way, brave people who are ready to decorate a brand new home door beyond recognition are rare, because a new thing often looks good.

Let's start with the simplest, namely - what needs to be done before decorating the front door? In this case, we are talking about the street, front part of the door leaf. According to statistics, more than 70% of owners prefer to install metal doors at the entrance.

The easiest way is to paint the outer part of a metal door to match a stencil.

Steel structures outside are decorated in only two ways: painting and cladding with wood or MDF. In both cases, try to remove the old paint, clean the base with emery and degrease.

There are three ways to remove paint from steel sheet:

  1. The simplest thing is to buy a wash and dissolve the coating. The method is quick and effective, but only if the door of the house faces the street. In a closed staircase of a multi-storey building, there may be problems with neighbors, because the wash is a "wildly" smelly and harmful thing;
  2. You can also buy an attachment in the form of an iron brush (cord-brush) for a grinder and scrape off the paint with it, here the only problem is noise;
  3. A relatively quiet, harmless and at the same time effective way is to warm up the base with a building hairdryer and scrape off the coating with a spatula, but if there is foam inside the iron door, then the heat may slightly melt the insulation.

The most harmless way to remove old paint is to warm it up with a building hair dryer.

You should not try to heat up old paint with a blowtorch or gas torch, firstly, you can cause a fire, and secondly, at this temperature, the metal can partially deform, and burnouts will appear on the tree.

Potholes and chips in an old board made of MDF or chipboard are cleaned with an iron brush and covered with putty, in this case, the composition is taken for outdoor woodwork, and when the putty completely hardens, the surface is sanded with emery and covered with soil.

Continuous application of the putty with a spatula.

Preparing an old wooden door is not much different from preparing the same chipboard. The first step is to remove the top layer of old paint or varnish. In addition to the above three cleaning methods, here you can still take a sharp steel scraper and try to clean the paint with it, physically hard, but quite realistic.

Places of installation of the lock must be prepared especially carefully.

Once you've gotten rid of the old finish, you need to clean out and slightly widen the visible cracks with a knife or chisel. Then take a sanding machine with medium emery in your hands and grind the surface.

It is not possible to level the surface with one emery, therefore, before decorating the old door, all serious defects must be putty, dried and once again grinded with a machine, but now with a thin emery.

Acrylic putty is one of the best leveling compounds for wooden doors.

Then brush off the dust and cover the tree with acrylic or latex primer. In principle, you can also grind by hand, but it is long and difficult.

Five ways to decorate doors

The decor of the front door made of wood (from the side of the dwelling) is no different from the artistic decoration of internal, interior doors, unless it is advisable to take the compositions that are waterproof and be sure to prime the base.

Method number 1. Coloring

The easiest way to decorate an old door with your own hands is to paint it. It is difficult to call such a decor of the house doors original, but we mentioned it, since staining is an integral part of most of the more complex types of finishes.

If the intricate original decor of the door doesn't appeal to you, just paint it.

  • Despite the seeming simplicity, painting has its own nuances, so that the composition lies flat and without drips, it is better to remove the canvas from the hinges and paint horizontally;
  • If you paint for further decoration of doors, then take acrylic or acrylate paint;
  • Nitroenamel dries up within an hour, plus it has a glossy shine, but such compositions are made on a solvent, accordingly they smell sharp;
  • Oil paints are the most affordable option, but they are not very suitable for decoration, there is only simple staining.

Method number 2. Wallpaper for old doors

First, about the wallpaper itself:

  • You should not take paper models, because the finish should be not only beautiful, but also durable, and the paper will lose all attractiveness in a year;
  • Textured vinyl-coated wallpaper is best used for accents, that is, in fragments. Plus vinyl is afraid of pets' claws;
  • The best option is the decor of old doors with non-woven and fiberglass, they are durable, durable, retain their appearance for a long time, and most importantly do not stretch when wet.
  • But a truly win-win do-it-yourself door decor is a photo wallpaper. They are not much more expensive than standard non-woven fabric, and the effect can exceed the wildest expectations.

Competently selected photo wallpaper will turn the room into a fairy tale.

If the base is well leveled and primed, then you can safely buy regular wallpaper glue and glue on it. Without primer, for example, when pasting doors painted with nitro enamel, it is better to take PVA.

We cut the canvas to size.

The instruction is usual:

  1. Remove handles and other accessories from the doors;
  2. Prepare the base;
  3. Apply glue to the base;
  4. Lubricate the wallpaper with glue;
  5. Glue the wallpaper to the doors and expel the air with a special plastic spatula. While the wallpaper is drying, you need to exclude drafts.

There is an important point here: if you took non-woven or fiberglass wallpaper, then they are not smeared with glue, the glue is applied only to the base.

We expel air and decorate the doors with polyurethane moldings.

The door will look original, one might even say chic, if you decorate it with polyurethane moldings. Moreover, it is necessary to take polyurethane and glue it on liquid nails or some similar composition. The foam fillets look the same, but they are easy to break.

Method number 3. "Creative mess"

Such a door design with your own hands can be safely called truly unique. After all, even the best wallpaper is still a serial product, and here you create your own unique picture.

This method also looks especially attractive because it is not necessary to grind or putty the doors, all irregularities and defects will be hidden by the embossed ornament, it is enough to degrease or prime the base.

We will do the overall embossed decoration of the door using papier-mâché from egg trays. There is nothing complicated here: take an egg tray and knead it, naturally it will tear, but this is not important, because we do not need precise dimensions.

Cooking and glueing papier-mâché.

Papier-mâché is glued to the doors with any high-quality glue, for example "Moment", or you can use a glue gun.

The more small things there are, the more original the panel will turn out.

In addition to egg trays, we will need various small trash. Everything from buttons to a broken computer mouse will be used here, and the more versatile this "garbage" is, the higher the likelihood of creating a truly unique decor. Small things are also glued to the door, choose the pattern yourself.

Any old things are suitable for decor.

After the door is decorated in this way, it needs to be painted, the paint, as it were, will depersonalize small details, turning them into a big picture. A roller and brushes will naturally not help here, so you need to buy aerosol enamel, it is better to take an automobile enamel, it is of better quality. About 2 cylinders are used for the canvas.

Aerosol enamel for exterior and interior use.

Method number 4. The simplest decoupage

Decorating doors with your own hands using the decoupage technique can be different, but since we are talking about the most affordable methods, then we will use three-layer paper napkins with a pattern as the main material

Decoupage technique is not new, but always original.

We start work as usual, that is, leveling, putty, sanding, painting. Next, we need the napkins themselves and PVA glue.

We do not need completely napkins, we are only interested in the top layer with a pattern, we separate it from all napkins. Be careful, the paper is very thin and tears easily.

We tear napkins into strips.

Now the ornamented napkins need to be torn into strips. Keep in mind: you need to tear, not cut, we are interested in elements with uneven edges. Since we tore a regular square, we will have two stripes with even edges, they need to be set aside, and the entire middle should be torn into small squares.

We break the middle stripes into small squares.

PVA glue in the form in which it is sold does not suit us (very thick), therefore, before decorating the door, we dilute the glue with clean water in a ratio of 1: 1.

Strips with an even edge are glued first. Take a soft brush and first spread the piece of the door with diluted glue. After that, gently apply the strip and smooth it out with a brush on a plane. You should not pay attention to small wrinkles, they will only make the decor better.

When the contour is pasted over, take on the arrangement of the middle part. The technology is the same: grease the base and glue those very small squares of napkins that we have folded separately.

PVA glue at normal room temperature dries on average for about a day. Then you buy a transparent acrylic varnish and cover the doors with it. It is not advisable to take another varnish, since initially we painted the base with acrylic paint and the reaction to a different composition can be unpredictable, up to rejection.

Decoupage with paper napkins looks original and easy to set up.

Method number 5. Fashionable Shabby chic

Simply put, the overseas name Shabby chic this is one of the many options for artificial aging; after processing, the wood acquires a grayish noble shade.

Please note: the base here is not initially sanded, but on the contrary, the surface is stitched with an abrasive ball. This ball is a stiff metallized brush that picks out the soft fabrics of the array, leaving tough, crisp fibers.

Wood stitching with an abrasive ball.

Now we need to lightly sand our door with an abrasive wheel. In hard-to-reach curly nooks, sanding will have to be done manually with an emery cloth with grain P180.

Grinding of wooden doors with an abrasive wheel or P180 emery.

Do-it-yourself door decoration using Shabby Chic technique looks like this:

  1. The first layer is applied white acrylic paint and immediately wiped off with a napkin, after which we leave the door to dry for 2 hours;

  1. After 2 hours, apply a layer of paint a little darker and also quickly wipe off the excess with a napkin;

  1. After 2 hours, apply a third, dark layer of binder and wipe it off again with a napkin;

Erase the next layer of binder with a napkin.

  1. After half an hour, we take the finishing varnish, cover the doors with one layer and leave to dry for another half hour (the finishing varnish dries quickly);

  1. After drying, we take P180 emery and grind it to wood, but without fanaticism, not evenly;

  1. Finishing is completed by applying 2 layers of finishing varnish, the first layer is primer, the second is front. Everything, finishing is over.

Output

Now you know how to decorate an old door in five relatively simple ways, there are other options in the video in this article, they also deserve attention.

The door mirror decor is fresh and original.

Even the most reliable and high-quality doors fade, scratch and rub over time. The varnish cracks and grows cloudy, the paint chips off, the wood dries up. But even this can be used to create your own unique and inimitable style. It is enough to be creative - and you will not have to get rid of old doors and waste time on trips to hardware stores. And we are already ready to offer some ideas!

1. Painting

The easiest way to freshen up a door with minimal changes to the design of an apartment is to repaint it in a new color. Choose a monochromatic fill if you prefer minimalism, or select individual parts if you like more complex artistic solutions.

Light doors look good in small classic rooms, but in laconic monochrome minimalism it can be turned into an independent accent. To do this, choose rich reds, yellows, greens and blues.

Acrylic paint is best suited: it is easy to work with, it is environmentally friendly, odorless, suitable for indoor use and harmless to health. This is especially important when it comes to doors to the bedroom or children's room.

Before painting, prepare the base, because the paint lays down in a thin layer and does not hide defects. Grind and prime the surface, seal strong chips and cracks with special sealants. It is recommended to apply the paint in even stripes from top to bottom or from left to right.

If the door is textured, first paint over the inserts, then the central strips, and only then the sides. And to keep the coating fresh for a long time - cover the paint with a layer of glossy or matt varnish.

Another simple staining technique is to spray paint over the surface with chaotic spots. Such decoration immediately creates a creative atmosphere of an artistic workshop in the room. Stiff brushes, toothbrushes, and even toothpicks are suitable for spraying.

2. Wallpapering

In order not to paint the door leaf by hand, it is enough to paste over it with wallpaper for your interior. In the living room and bedroom, ordinary paper is enough, but for wet rooms, pay attention to liquid wallpaper.

Before pasting, it is imperative to get rid of the old coating, otherwise the adhesion will be much worse. To remove old paint, warm it up with a construction hairdryer and use a spatula. After that, fill up all the defects with wood putty and sand the surface with fine sandpaper.

When choosing wallpaper, the main thing is that it matches the wall decoration: you can even combine several collections or use photo wallpaper. To avoid bubbles, apply adhesive evenly to the entire substrate and avoid missing areas. Thoroughly flatten the wallpaper with a roller and avoid drafts until dry.

3. Fabric decor

Pasting with a cloth resembles wallpaper, only it looks more interesting due to the texture. If you have unnecessary but beautiful scraps, you can make a real patchwork quilt on the door. It is interesting to fit into ethnic styles, boho, country or Provence.

You can fix the fabric with glue or using special furniture staples - like upholstery on a sofa. The advantage of mechanical fasteners is that they can be easily removed to replace the annoying coating. For decoration use lace, beads, tassels, fringe, braid and any other decorative trifles to your taste.

4. Covering with leather

Leather upholstery is an alternative to fabric trim for classic noble interiors like English style. Such a door always looks expensive and luxurious in a living room or study. Moreover, it does not have to be natural leather: now there are enough more affordable, functional and environmentally friendly substitutes.

For fastening, use glue and special rivets that evenly fix the canvas and form elegant patterns. For decor, pay attention to embossing, painting, fine carving, finishing with metal fittings and belts. Such a door will also fit well with industrial styles, such as loft or grunge.

5. Craquelure

The craquelure effect is familiar to everyone, even if you don't know the name of this phenomenon yet. This is the same aged crack mesh often used in vintage and industrial interiors. It is created with the help of a special paint or varnish, which provokes cracking, but unlike natural wear, such a coating is strong and durable.

Craquelure can be one- or two-step: depending on the number of layers. Contrasting shades look good, but with each new layer, wait until the previous one is completely dry. Such a coating can be applied not only to wooden doors, but also to any other doors.

6. Stickers and stencils

If you are bored with plain doors, feel free to paint the canvas by hand. Can't you draw? It doesn't matter, because the most simple and laconic floral or geometric motifs are in fashion, which do not require high artistic skills.

To keep the drawing even and neat, use stencils that can be printed in advance. They allow you to imagine exactly how the ornament will be located, and not to miss even in the smallest details.

A bright and trendy decoration tool - vinyl decals and stickers. For restrained interiors, simple black silhouettes or laconic patterns are suitable, and for kitsch pop art - bright and colorful stickers, posters, clippings from comics.

7. Decoupage

Decoupage is a simple and affordable technology for finishing old doors, facades and furniture. The technique practically does not require special skills, materials and tools. Sometimes ordinary paper napkins and glue are enough, because in its essence it is a complicated application.

Decoupage requires a perfectly smooth sanded and degreased surface. After that you can paint the door with acrylic paint for contrast, but be sure to dry it. A PVA solution with water is used to glue the drawings, and transparent furniture varnish is used to fix the result.

8. Aging

This is not a mistake: to breathe new life into old doors, make them old even more. There are many techniques for this, from machining to special paints and coatings.

The roughest and brightest aging for a loft or country is brushing oak, ash or softwood doors. The surface is treated with a hard metal brush, which destroys all soft fibers. The relief of the tree appears even more clearly and expressively, but this is not suitable for all varieties.

Elegant scuffs for Provence or shabby chic are created using a paraffin layer. First, the canvas is painted with bright colored paint, after which it is thickly rubbed with wax or paraffin. A contrasting light or pastel coating is applied on top, which is then sanded with sandpaper. Paraffin is removed in some places and reveals the lower layer of paint.

The second way to age elegantly is dry brush technology that designers have borrowed from artists. It is extremely simple: take some paint on a thick and flat dry synthetic brush and brush over the base. Hair will not leave continuous strokes and lines, forming an intermittent scratched layer.

9. Mosaic

Mosaics for interior decoration are good for their uniqueness and aesthetics with ease of execution. Instead of buying a ready-made drawing, you can lay out a fancy abstraction yourself. And no one else will have such second doors.

To create mosaics, glass, ceramics, small tiles, acrylic, pebbles and shells, and any other little things are used. The main thing is to draw a sketch in advance and think over the location of all the details, because even chaotic ornaments will be neat and harmonious only if you think over them in advance.

10. Mirror

Mirror inserts in doors are one of the most functional ways to decorate. This is a good choice for small rooms, because reflective surfaces visually add volume to the room. At the same time, such a door can replace a separate wall mirror or a mirror panel of a wardrobe.

Ready-made decorative mirrors are difficult to use to decorate a door, so reflective acrylic panels come in handy in this case. Their advantages are ease of processing and a variety of colors. If you still have fragments of old mirrors, you can use them too - make a mosaic out of them.

11. Stained glass

Stained glass is a classic decoration of windows and doors since ancient times. This technique was used in temples, palaces and rich houses - only the subtlety of execution differed. Now there are three main options: order an individual stained glass window according to your sketch, purchase a ready-made insert, or paint the glass yourself.

Translucent acrylic paints on glass are used for drawing. You will also need to create a contour - the illusion of metal inserts connecting the elements. But do not paint directly on the door, because the glass must lie horizontally, otherwise the paint will drip from the surface.

12. Molding

Use molding to make the simplest and cheapest door luxurious and elegant enough for classic interiors. These are ready-made elements that imitate stucco molding, bas-reliefs and other decorative inserts.

The simplest molding is made of polyurethane or foam, so you can simply glue it or plant it on liquid nails. And to make a beautiful aged door, be sure to paint over it and use contrasting colors or gilding for details.
