Which sea buckthorn is useful red or yellow. What are the benefits and harms of the medicinal plant Shepherdia

A tall shrub belonging to the Lokhovy family is known as sea buckthorn. Almost every part of the plant has found application in medicine or cosmetology. The usefulness of the fruits, leaves and bark of the medicinal tree is due to their unique composition: all the substances they contain in the complex are capable of repelling diseases that so often attack the fragile human body. Sea buckthorn, the beneficial properties and contraindications of which have been known for a long time, is considered a real salvation from many diseases.

Useful properties of berries

For the manufacture of medicines, it is the fruits of the medicinal shrub that are most often used. Their composition is fully understood. Studies have confirmed that sea buckthorn contains the following substances in huge quantities:

  1. Carotenoids make up about 4.5% of the berry's volume. This element stimulates the production of vitamin A, which can have a rejuvenating effect on the body. Vitamin E, which is part of the sea buckthorn, also possesses the same property. The content of these substances determines the use of sea buckthorn in the field of cosmetology.
  2. Flavanoids that prevent the appearance of cancerous tumors. Serotonin, which is found in large quantities in bitter berries, has similar properties.
  3. Choline, which significantly reduces the level of bad cholesterol in the body and restores the health of the circulatory system. The element also has an anti-sclerotic effect, especially pronounced in combination with B-sitosterol, which is present in large quantities in sea buckthorn.
  4. Organic acids, including triterpenic acids, successfully help to cope with various heart ailments: stitching pains, arrhythmias, shortness of breath caused by disturbances in the work of the main muscle of the body.
  5. Targets a number of beneficial trace minerals, including the rare molybdenum, titanium and boron.
  6. Vitamins. Most of all, berries contain useful substances of group B.

Homeopathy, cooking, official and folk medicine, cosmetology - these are far from all areas of application of a plant with such pronounced medicinal properties.

Sea buckthorn red and common - is there a difference

The berries of shefferdia silvery are outwardly similar to the fruits of the common sea buckthorn, the only difference in color: the former are bright red in color, and seem to be sprinkled with silver powder on top.

The flavor of the berries is also different. Red fruits have a sour taste, while the usual orange ones are famous for their bitterness. That is why the former are often used in cooking.

The list of diseases for which Shifferdia is used is extensive. But most often it is used as an immunomodulator and weight loss aid. However, the use of red sea buckthorn is also indicated for more serious diseases, for example, sclerosis.

What are the leaves used for

The composition of the leaves of the plant is almost identical to the fruit. However, they are used somewhat less frequently. Most likely, this is due to the fact that, unlike fruit-based preparations, casting a bush cannot usually be bought in a pharmacy: they can only be found in a special phyto-pharmacy, or prepared independently. The procedure for obtaining finished raw materials, from which various medicines can be obtained in the future, is extremely simple:

  • a dry, cool day is selected for collection, preferably in early summer or late spring;
  • to pluck both individual leaves and young branches of sea buckthorn from the bush;
  • the collected parts of the plant must be dried. However, direct sunlight can ruin the leaves of the sea buckthorn, while the beneficial properties will also evaporate. It is best to choose a place in the shade for drying and constantly turn the workpiece over.

The resulting dry raw materials can be used as an additive in herbal tea or in the manufacture of phytopreparations. Useful recipes that traditional medicine has been saving for years help to prepare medicines for many ailments: diabetes mellitus, hepatitis, cirrhosis, pneumonia, gastrointestinal diseases, blepharitis and other diseases of various vital systems.

For children under two years old, it is not recommended to give sea buckthorn fruits to eat, and even more so healing infusions based on it are not recommended. The fruits contain too many active substances that can harm a fragile body.

External use is permitted from birth. Our grandmothers used sea buckthorn oil to lubricate the diaper rash that occurs in children in infancy and got rid of irritations with the help of amber liquid.

How is sea buckthorn useful for children? From the age of three, berries can be given not only as complementary foods, but also as a medicine. And the set of substances useful for the body is almost identical to those contained in berries.

It is forbidden to use the plant in any form for the following diseases:

A healthy remedy can be consumed fresh during the ripening period. But in winter it is almost impossible to find berries, therefore frozen sea buckthorn is especially popular during this period. It is recommended to prepare an excellent sea buckthorn syrup from the harvested crop, which helps to strengthen the immune system, which is so important in the period of a cold.

  2. The berries must be crushed to a state of gruel. For these purposes, you can use a blender.
  3. The resulting mass must be freed from the cake. The easiest way is to rub it through a sieve, and wrap the remaining husk in cheesecloth and squeeze.
  4. Pour the resulting juice into a cooking container and place on the stove.
  5. Add granulated sugar to the liquid. Ingredients are taken at a 1: 1 ratio.
  6. Heat the product slightly and pour into a jar. Do not boil!

Advice! Before use, the syrup must be diluted in water at the rate of 5 tablespoons per mug of water.

You can prepare a sweet mass of berries for the winter. There are various recipes, but the classic one is the most popular. Sea buckthorn, mashed with sugar, will appeal to any family member, including children.

It is quite simple to prepare a treat with healing properties:

  • divide the resulting mixture into small portions;
  • grind each one through a sieve;
  • put in a basin in layers, alternating sea buckthorn and sugar, 2 cm wide;
  • put in a dark place, and cover with any cloth.

Keep the resulting mass for a couple of hours in a cool place, and then put it in sterilized glass containers.

The medicinal properties of sea buckthorn with sugar will come into play in the winter, when the body, weakened by the fight against various viruses, will need a vitamin supplement. Regular use of useful delicacies will help support the immune system at such a difficult time for the body.

V.V. NAZAROV (Kurganinsk): I bought extraordinary sea buckthorn berries on the market - reddish, tastes sweet and sour. What is this, a hybrid? Will such sea buckthorn grow from seeds? In our city, I see neither sea buckthorn nor sucker. Tell us about these plants.
The genus Loch belongs to the Loch family (Elaeagnaceae Juss). Includes 55 species; of which about 50 species are the genus Loch; the rest - sea buckthorn (Hippophae L.) and shepherdia (Shepherdia) - have three species each. All Lochs can grow on very poor soils, since they have tuberous bacteria on the roots that assimilate nitrogen from the air.
Loch was introduced into culture in antiquity and replaced dates for the peoples of Central Asia. In Central Asia and the Caucasus, large-fruited varieties are grown, selected as a result of centuries of selection.
Various types of sucker grow mainly in the temperate climate zone - in Central and Central Asia, in the Caucasus, Armenia, in the Far East, in the Mediterranean, they live in the tropics.
They are deciduous or evergreen small trees and shrubs, often with thorns. Evergreen species have leathery leaves, bloom in autumn and bear fruit in spring. In deciduous, the shape of the leaves is oblong-lanceolate, pubescent with stellate hairs. The flowers of the sucker are axillary, single or in short racemes, bisexual. The fruit is a false drupe.
The most widespread is the narrow-leaved oak tree - (Eleagnus angustifolia L.) - a low thorny tree with a curved trunk or shrub, with silvery young shoots, leaves and fruits, reddish-brown bark. Flowers - 1-3 each - in the axils of leaves on short stalks with a strong aroma. The fruit is oval, 2-3 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, with a yellow or reddish blush. The pulp is dryish, sweet.
Sucker fruits ripen in September - October. They contain 40-44% sugars (of which 20% fructose), 1.3% organic acids, 10% protein, 45% vitamin C, tannins and dyes, potassium and phosphorus salts. Seeds and bark contain alkaloids; in the leaves 350mg% vitamin C; essential oil, flavonoids in flowers. Keeps well fresh. They are used for making flour, eaten raw, or used to make homemade flour products. The fruits are tart - sweet. The bones have a decorative striped color and are used to make beads.
The narrow-leaved oak tree is found in Eastern and Southern Transcaucasia, Central Asia. The best habitats are the tugai, that is, the valleys of the southern rivers, the shores of lakes. Loch is easily propagated by root suckers, cuttings, seeds. It anchors the banks of the rivers, forming peculiar loch forests in the valleys. Here pheasants find protection from predators, for which the fruit of the sucker is a favorite food. Loch flowers have a strong scent that attracts bees and other insects. Lohovy honey has a special taste and aroma.
Wild-growing sucker forms communities with poplar, saxaul, and kendyr in riparian forests. Loch is photophilous, unpretentious to the soil. It can grow on pebbles, sands, saline soils. These are heat-resistant and frost-resistant plants (tolerate frosts up to -300), fast-growing, living up to 100 years.
In Asia, this type of sucker is called "jida". It is widely used as a medicinal plant. Tincture and extract of roots, bark and trunks stimulates the work of the heart; fresh leaves - anti-inflammatory and wound healing agent. A decoction of the leaves is drunk for colds, stomach diseases; they can rinse your mouth for diseases of the oral cavity. Water, alcohol and oil infusions of flowers are also used for colds, malaria, hypertension. Decoction of fruits - expectorant, diuretic, antihelminthic agent. The fruits are used in the preparation of astringent preparations: lochtan, lohpektin. These are concentrates of tannins and alkaloids that are used to treat the stomach, with inflammatory processes in the oral cavity.
In folk medicine, the fruits of the narrow-leaved sucker are used as an astringent against dysentery. Recipe: Boil 30 g of fruits in a glass of water for 2-3 minutes, leave for 5 minutes, filter and drink 2 tablespoons after meals. The same broth is also used for diseases of the respiratory system, as well as a diuretic and antihelminthic agent. To enhance cardiac activity, use an aqueous infusion or a vodka tincture (1:10) of sucker flowers. All parts of the sucker are also used in homeopathy.
In addition to narrow-leaved oak, other species are also used: E. multi flora Thunb - multiflorous oak, known as "gumi"; E. umbellata Thunb is an umbrella sucker.
The multiflorous oak tree is an endem of southern Sakhalin, known as "gum", is also a wonderful fruit and medicinal plant. Its fruits contain a complex of vitamins, anthocyanins, pectins, carbohydrates, organic acids. It treats gastrointestinal diseases, improves blood circulation, and has a tonic effect. The multifloral sucker is grown in the Ukraine, Belarus, the Kuban and Siberia, Sakhalin, Japan and China, in the Moscow region.
"Gummi" is a shrub up to 1.5 m high, young shoots are covered with reddish - brown scales. Leaves are oval, silvery - pubescent. The flowers are yellowish-white on long stalks. Fruits are large, "drupes" are red, juicy and sour-sweet. Ripen in August. Freshly picked fruits with stalks can be stored in the refrigerator for a long time. The fruits can be ground with sugar (1.2 kg of sugar per 1 kg of fruits) through a stainless mesh sieve. It turns out delicious jelly. You can combine gum with sea buckthorn.
The homeland of the Loch umbrella is East Asia. This is a tree or shrub up to 4 m tall. Leaves are oblong-oval, pubescent. The flowers are yellowish-white on short pedicels, collected in bunches (inflorescence is an umbrella). Fruits are round, dark pink, juicy, sweet and sour with a slight tart taste. The chemical composition of the fruit is the same as that of gumi; food and medicinal properties are similar to multiflower sucker. In the Kuban it is called "red sea buckthorn".
One of the remarkable features of the sucker is its ability to release gum into cracks in the bark or damaged branches. Loja gum is used for the manufacture of high-quality varnishes, paints, glue. The fruiting sucker tree produces 6-8 kg of fruit (sometimes up to 20 kg). Wood is also valued - strong, brownish yellow. Fatty oil is obtained from seeds, which is used in the confectionery and perfumery industries. The seeds are processed into a coffee substitute. Leaves and bark are used to tan leather and dye it black and brown.
Loch is one of the most beautiful ornamental plants, propagates by cuttings, layering, tolerates haircuts, and is used to create hedges. Loch is a gas and smoke resistant plant. As a culture, it is of great value in the development of new lands in drylands.

Shepherdia silver is called red sea buckthorn because of the similarity of the plant with the usual sea buckthorn. The difference lies in the color of the berries - in Shepherdia they are bright red.

Shepherdia belongs to the sea buckthorn family, in most botanical reference books the plant is called a hybrid of sea buckthorn and barberry. Shepherdia has a lot of useful properties, its fruits are used in cooking and folk medicine.

Shepherdia description

Shepherdia silvery is a deciduous shrub with a height of two to six meters. The plant got its name in honor of the English botanist D. Shepherd; North America is considered the birthplace of red sea buckthorn. You can find other names for the shrub: buffalo berry, Abkhazian sea buckthorn, pink sea buckthorn, Nebraska currant.

Shepherdia leaves are oval in shape, rounded at the top, covered with silvery hairs on both sides. The arrangement of the leaves is opposite. Red sea buckthorn blooms in April. The flowers are small, yellow, divided into male and female. To get a harvest of berries, male and female plants need to be planted on the site. Pollination occurs only with the help of insects - this is another difference between Shepherdia and the usual sea buckthorn, which belongs to wind-pollinated plants.

Shepherdia's fruit is a red globular drupe covered with white dots. Mass ripening of berries occurs in August or early September, they are located on the branches in the same way as sea buckthorn berries. Ripe fruits do not fall to the ground for a long time, which makes their collection very convenient. Shepherdia berries taste sweet and sour, sometimes with bitterness.

The life span of red sea buckthorn is up to 30 years; annually, one bush gives an average of 15 kg of berries.

Beneficial features

The nutritional value of Shepherdia fruits is low, the calorie content of 100 g of the product is only 25-30 kcal. The bulk of the berry is water and fiber, the pulp contains a small amount of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

The beneficial properties of sea buckthorn, crossed with barberry, lie in its chemical composition: in terms of the content of vitamins, Shepherdia is superior to citrus fruits. The buffalo berry contains trace elements, pectin, organic acids, tannins, carotene, various groups of vitamins (vitamin C prevails).

The main beneficial properties of red sea buckthorn are manifested in the following effect of the fruit on the body:

Due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, pink sea buckthorn berries help to cope with inflammatory processes in the intestines, accelerate wound healing. It is useful to add berries to diet meals that are included in the menu of people who monitor body weight.

Shepherdia berries are used to prepare jelly and compotes, jellies and preserves. In order to preserve the vitamin properties of the fruits during the winter period, it is recommended to freeze them.

For therapeutic purposes, freshly squeezed juice of berries, infusions and decoctions obtained from dried fruits are used (a glass of boiling water is taken for a tablespoon of berries). It is useful to brew sea buckthorn berries as tea and drink them daily in the morning and in the evening - thanks to the regular use of sea buckthorn tea in the autumn-spring period, you can protect yourself from colds.

Sea buckthorn oil has excellent healing properties; it is prepared as follows: the shepherdia fruits are washed, dried in the oven and ground in a coffee grinder. The resulting flour is poured with olive oil in a ratio of 1: 2, mixed well and placed in a dark place for 7-10 days. The finished oil is used to treat stomach diseases, skin rashes. The recommended dose for internal intake of the oil is a teaspoon 20 minutes before a meal.

Contraindication to the use of fresh shepherdia fruits- exacerbation of diseases of the liver, stomach and intestines. Some people have individual intolerance to fruits, therefore, their use for food and as a medicine must be abandoned.

Growing sea buckthorn

Shepherdia is an unpretentious plant that grows on any kind of soil. Despite this, it is preferable to choose well-lit places for planting sea buckthorn - then the fruits will be more juicy and large. The plant is drought-resistant; in the absence of additional watering, shepherdia will still please with a bountiful harvest.

Buffalo berry is propagated in several ways:

  • Seeds. Shepherdia seeds are sown in the fall immediately into the ground, in the spring (around the end of April) shoots appear. Until the plants have entered the fruiting phase, it is impossible to determine where the male or female bush is. Therefore, several plants are left on the site, after the appearance of the first fruits, unnecessary male plants are removed. With good watering and fertilizing the soil, young bushes will begin to bear fruit in 4-5 years.
  • Cuttings. The simplest and most popular breeding method for shepherdia, in which it is known for sure whether a male or female plant is planted on the site. For rooting, cuttings 10-15 cm long are used, on which there are several nodes. After cutting, the cuttings are placed in a growth stimulator solution, after a day they are planted to a depth of 3-4 cm. The procedure begins in early summer, by mid-autumn the cuttings are successfully rooted.
  • Root offspring. The roots of the red sea buckthorn are shallow, so you can easily separate the root offspring from the mother bush and transplant it to a new place. Root shoots are taken from male and female plants; to ensure guaranteed fruiting on the site, it is recommended to plant four female bushes on one male.

Caring for red sea buckthorn consists in removing weeds around young bushes, periodically pruning crooked and dead branches.

The plant is not susceptible to diseases and attack of insect pests, withstands winter frosts, so even novice gardeners can cope with the cultivation of shepherdia.

The plant is suitable for cultivation in various climatic zones, thanks to which shepherdia is found everywhere on the territory of Russia.

Harvesting berries

The fastest way to collect Shepherdia berries is in this way: large pieces of cloth are spread around the bush and the branches are shaken vigorously. Ripe berries fall onto the fabric. Harvesting is best done after the first frost - in this case, the berries acquire an unusual taste and aroma. But you need to be careful when choosing the time of harvesting - too strong frosts can spoil the taste of sea buckthorn.

If the collection is carried out before the onset of frost, the berries are removed by hand, trying not to crush them, while leaving small petioles. Thanks to this collection method, the berries will be stored in a cool place for a long time. The collected fruits are dried, frozen, used for making compotes and jam.

The taste and medicinal properties of Shepherdia are complemented by one more advantage - the red sea buckthorn is unusually decorative, it is used to decorate personal plots. Shepherdia bushes look especially elegant in autumn, when red fruits "burn" against the background of silvery leaves.

They have many beneficial properties. This has been used since ancient times by indigenous people in their homeland in North America as a food additive and medicine. Other famous names include "Nebraska currant" and "buffalo berry". In this article you can find information about shepherdia silvery, its beneficial properties and contraindications for use.
