The battlefield is the kitchen. What European kitchen furniture manufacturers did not foresee in the USA

Will American furniture suit a Russian buyer? Different habits, different way of life, and of course - different furniture. To answer this question, you need to know what the Americanfurniture actually differs from the Russian one.

The first is size. Typically, the US produces larger furniture than Russian consumers are accustomed to. It is explainable- The USA is one of the first places in the world in terms of the number of square meters per person, thereforefurniture must matchspacious housing in size. This furniture is imposing bedssofas with deep seats, freearmchairs - absolutely suitable for a large apartment or house.

Each piece of furniturehas its own function,

that is, the sofa isexactly a sofa, notsofa bed

A priority our compatriots have multifunctional furniture, while Americans have the opposite. Americans quite clearly divide the zones of their housing, each room has its own purpose. In the living room,a kind of center of the house, it is customary to gather with the whole family, bedroom - exclusively for restful sleep, kitchen - for cooking, and they try to equip special guest rooms for guests. Even small by American standardsstudio apartment will have separaterecreation, work and sleep areas. Each piece of furniturehas its own function, that is, a sofa isexactly a sofa, notsofa bed ... Therefore, mostamerican sofas do not have a folding mechanism for equipping a berth. For Russian consumers, this is a questionis so important that when selecting collections of American furniture for the APHome store, we choosemodel namely folding sofas, because these are the preferences of our buyers. Another curious detail - not all collections are presentedcabinets, dressing room or built-in wardrobe.

It should be noted that when choosing furniturefor specific purposes, americans believe thatfurniture should perform its tasks to the maximum. American furniture requirements are, first of all, comfort. More precisely, absolute comfort. The sofa should beas comfortable as possible, with a large number of pillows, the degree of its softnessmeticulously calculatedtechnologists and is provided with multilayer fillingand special springs. An ergonomic mattress is required for a bed for a healthy sleep, drawers of dressers and cabinet doors open easily and silently, armchairs have comfortable armrests, and bedside tables have a USB connector.

Not all collections include wardrobes,

for storing clothes, Americans more often use

dressing room or built-in wardrobe

In short, American furniture manufacturers are trying toto provide the highest level of comfort while improving everything possible.

Health is the greatest value to the average American, so they are very concerned about the sustainability of furniture. For the manufacture of furniture, materials of very good quality are used: hardwood, upholstery fabrics with natural fibers, genuine leather of good workmanship, high-quality fillers, sofa springs of blued steel - furniture must be impeccableoutside and inside.

At the same time, the design of American furniture seems very simple andcalm, it is ideally adjusted in style, without pretentious elements and flashy luxury. Exceptional quality materials, durability and noble simplicity - this is luxurious furniturein American style.

And the most interesting thing is that the price of furniture of American firms is comparable to Russian furniture of the same quality.

In APHome stores furniture from the USA representsashley brand, the largest furniture manufacturer in the world.

If you think that the American furniture market developed in a greenhouse environment, you are wrong.

More recently, in the mid-2000s, a wave of furniture bankruptcies swept across the United States. What do you think is the reason? It is true that the growth of Chinese furniture exports was so unrestrained that restrictive measures had to be taken at the state level. Moreover, the introduced anti-dumping duties did not have any significant effect on the position of the US furniture industry, since they were applicable only to some Chinese exporting companies.

Do you also remember the crisis of 2008, which seriously crippled the business? It was not only in Russia, moreover, its starting point was the fall of the mortgage and stock markets in the United States.

USA and Russia - what's the difference?

How the American market regained stability and began to develop further can be compared to how Baron Munchausen pulled himself out of the swamp. The constant search for new sales formats, new management systems, new ways to attract customers has led to the fact that, according to experts, the US furniture market will grow by 6.14% in the coming years.

It is obvious that even before the 2008 crisis, the Russian furniture market was far from being as developed as the US market. Since the collapse of the USSR, it has had too little time to develop. Plus the sanctions of recent years, which brought additional problems. That is, we start from an obviously lower point. What can we say, if, according to statistics, the United States now occupies 14% of the world furniture market, and Russia - only 1%.

But this does not mean at all that everything is bad with us and therefore there is no point in doing anything. On the contrary, due to the large field of activity and the "freshness" of the market, more prospects for development open up for Russian furniture makers. What the furniture business in the USA is built on today will be relevant in our country in 3-5 years.

Right now you have a unique chance to find out what American businessmen are doing, spy on suitable ideas, adapt them to your company and outrun competitors.

Chad Turney - international expert and head of a furniture company from the USA

Chad Turney told me about how American companies operate. He has been working in the furniture industry for 25 years, knows both retail and wholesale well. As Chad himself says, he has been associated with the furniture industry since birth. Many of his relatives are in one way or another connected with this industry. He lives in the furniture capital of the world - the city of Hint Point, North Carolina. The first job he got after college was retailing furniture. The furniture business for him is not just a profession, but a real passion. Unsurprisingly, the brands he promotes quickly achieved excellent performance.

Since 2013, Chad Turney has been President and CEO of CMT Home. It is a global furniture development business that includes retail, worldwide wholesale, insurance, additional warranties and other services to help the furniture industry grow.

He is familiar with the Russian furniture market firsthand. For four years, Chad has worked closely with AP Home, so he knows the specifics of the market itself, and the mentality of our entrepreneurs, and consumer behavior. He even now comes to Russia several times a year, as he is conducting consulting projects with our companies. The information he gives is really applicable in our conditions.

A heart-to-heart talk about the near future of the furniture market

Chad and I discussed several important issues that relate to the near future of the furniture market in Russia.

Online sales and virtual reality

The first thing in which we absolutely coincided - importance which are becoming more and more global. They cannot be put off any longer. They are becoming more and more significant and are ahead of other sales formats in terms of development rates. Accordingly, they begin to influence consumer habits. Customers get used to buying from home, seeing several options for buying at once in one place - on a computer screen.

Develop virtual reality technologies... A person can enter a small store and see a huge assortment using the terminal. There are applications of "augmented reality" that help to see how the furniture of the consumer's home will look like - against the background of walls, in combination with other interior items.

Thus, the furniture company engages customers in the interaction with products, shapes their activity and stimulates sales. It turns out that a person receives detailed professional advice right at home, without going to a real store.

But modern technologies are already being used in stores. I recently recorded a video about IKEA Augmented Reality. Take a look (turn on the sound in the lower right corner of the player):

Buyers in the USA and Russia

The second thing I've also been talking about for several years is that people hate complexity. They don't want to waste time and resources choosing the best option out of hundreds. They are want to get a convenient product directly to their home, and not think about its delivery and installation... Therefore, universal mattresses, which are packed in rolls, have become so popular in the USA and Germany. In the USA, almost every factory began to produce such compact mattresses, because they are also profitable for manufacturers - there are less transportation costs, and more sales due to the affordable price and convenience.

Chad advises to actively develop and introduce interactive technologies. The client should be able to do everything in a smartphone: see the product, get advice, pay for the purchase. Listen to young buyers - this is your future.

Chad said people in Russia are less likely than Americans to think they need new furniture. The cult of consumption reigns in the USA, Americans love to buy. Russians are more conservative, they prefer to save money for a rainy day. However, there is one thing in common - both do not want to wait long, and at the same time want to have their own "style", their own chips in design. This is often not what they see in the store, so you need to be able to make small changes to the base models. Only local producers can give it. This is why many American brands are relocating their factories from Asia back to the United States.

How the U.S. retail system works

There is no single retail system in the United States. There are chain stores, large and small stores, and each builds a sales system in its own way. Chad Turney will tell the participants about the most effective approaches , which will be held as part of the Big Professional Furniture Conference in Moscow.

Retail expands the list of services. Ashley stores, for example, began to offer cleaning furniture... This is how companies build long-term relationships with customers. A very important service - extended warranty... Basically, manufacturers set a one-year warranty, sellers increase it to 3 years, but for a certain price.

American stores often offer product protection... If a person put a hot mug on and ruined the tabletop or swayed in a chair and broke a leg, they will have their furniture repaired or changed. At the same time, the buyer gets a sense of security, he feels the seller's care.

For retail, this is a great additional income without expenses, because the buyer two years after the purchase is unlikely to remember both where he bought this particular table, and that he received a protection service or an extended warranty.

In July, I shared ideas on a promising sales format and ideas for exposition design, store navigation. Have you seen? If not, take a look.

Video interview with Chad Turney

Chad is generally a very interesting conversationalist and a great professional. In his video interviews, he gives even more interesting and useful information about the development opportunities of the Russian furniture market.

The most important information for furniture makers in 2 days

CMT Home specializes in helping furniture companies. Chad Turney and his staff are deeply immersed in the client's business and look for the best development paths that are suitable for each specific case. The decisions are based on the experience of Chad himself and all the companies he has worked with. As you can imagine, over the past 25 years, a lot of proven strategies have accumulated that are guaranteed to lead to better management, more effective marketing and more sales.

What is the difference between the American market and the Russian one in many issues that interest the owners and managers of furniture companies;
- what formats of sales are popular in the USA now and why;
- what distribution channels are used by American manufacturers;
- what Russian manufacturers need to do to increase the competitiveness of their products;
- which customer acquisition tools work better than others;
- how a small furniture business can resist the giants;
- how to form a sales department - how many people should be in it and what processes should be set up in it;
- how to achieve the efficiency of the retail business, from the choice of location to the methods of accounting and evaluation of indicators.

Chad Turney with pleasure will share these and many others knowledge with you... And also will give expert opinions and recommendations to those who need them. That is, you can personally ask what to do for you, and get working advice. You just have to take them and do what others will come to only after a few years (if they don't close before that).

Furniture Today, the leading American industry weekly, conducted another study of the retail market for furniture and home goods in the United States. The experts of the publication came to the conclusion that the largest volume of furniture and mattresses is still sold in the US market by traditional furniture stores. However, not all traditional trading formats showed positive sales dynamics.

In the course of the study, Furniture Today experts analyzed the structure of American furniture retail and compared sales data for 2008 and 2010. It found that traditional outlets accounted for 53% of all sales in 2010, which is 9% lower than in 2008, when the previous survey was conducted. Converting interest into US currency, Furniture Today reports that traditional furniture retail generated sales of $ 41.6 billion, or 20% less than in 2008, when the result of $ 52 billion was achieved. the same time, furniture sales in general in the US market fell from 2008 to 2010 by only 6.4%.

What formats do Americans include in the category of "traditional" retail?

First, multi-brand salons, including chain stores, where furniture is the main product category (examples: Rooms To Go, Nebraska Furniture Mart, R. C. Willey, Star Furniture, Jordan’s Furniture, American Signature, Raymour & Flanigan, Havertys). It was this first category that lost the most in sales: during the reporting period, its share fell from 50% to 40%.

Secondly, branded points. They are dominated by the products of one manufacturer, while the store can be owned both by the factory itself and by an independent dealer or franchisee (Ashley Furniture HomeStores, Ethan Allen, La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, Select Comfort, etc.). The share of sales through such monobrand salons did not change - 7%.

Thirdly, the so-called lifestyle stores are hypermarkets selling furniture and household goods, and in addition, all kinds of accessories, small electrical appliances, grocery delicacies, clothing, jewelry, personal care products, etc. can be present in the product matrix. . (e.g. IKEA, Pottery Barn, Pier 1 Imports, Cost Plus World Market, Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Bed Bath & Beyond). Lifestyle stores have benefited the most from the recession, with their share of the US market growing from 5% to 6% over the reporting period.

Two other channels that have developed successfully in the past years are direct sales to consumers via the Internet, mail catalogs, television or at home (furniture sold for $ 7.1 billion, market share - 9%, which is 2% higher than in 2008), as well as sales through professional designers (the share of this channel increased from 6% to 8%).

Talking about less significant sales channels for furniture and home goods in the American market, we can note the growth of discounter department stores, in which furniture is sold on an equal basis with other products and products (Wal-Mart, Target, Big Lots, Kmart, TJ Maxx / Marshalls, HomeGoods , Tuesday Morning, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Fred Meyer, Meijer, Kohl's, Ross Stores, Stein Mart, etc.) - they accounted for 7% of all sales, up from 6% in 2008. The share of conventional department stores such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, JCPenney, Sears, Neiman-Marcus, Belk, as well as office supply stores did not change - 3% each. Sales of used furniture through auctions and second-hand shops (3%), furniture stores for rent (5%), sales through closed clubs (4%), as well as the category “other” - gift shops added about 1% , goods for children, salons of electronics, textiles, etc. (5%).

The Top 100 largest furniture retailers in the United States, compiled by Furniture Today, accounted for 30% of all sales in 2010 - 2% less than in 2008 and 4% less than in 2005.

We will tell you about 15 features that will allow you to create an American-style kitchen interior: expert advice, tiny but important nuances, and, of course, photos! Let's get started?

1. Combining kitchen and living room

If you paid attention to this, then you probably noticed that the rooms there are large in size, including the kitchen.

This is one of the main features of the layout of American apartments, where the kitchen is often combined with the living room and dining room.

In our reality, similar design projects can be implemented either in a studio apartment or in a private house, since apartments with a typical kitchen are often not too large.

Before you start planning, make sure you have enough space - a classic American style needs a lot of space and light.

We will talk about artificial lighting separately, but natural lighting should be enough - ideally, you need a room with two or more windows.

An important nuance: In addition to the fact that a kitchen-dining room with a living room is not realizable in every house, you still need to attend to (or even more than one). Keep this in mind when calculating your budget.

2. Kitchen island

In the American style, you cannot do without it - it is not typical for it to arrange furniture exclusively along the walls. Here it is better to occupy the center and a kitchen island - the best choice.

It's not for nothing that Americans love this piece of furniture so much: it is not only beautiful, but also functional. See for yourself:

  • The question of zoning has already been mentioned more than once - even directly in the kitchen area, sometimes it is necessary to separate one segment from another.
  • Additional work surface.
  • It is not necessary to buy a separate dining table for a kitchen with an island. This is especially true for a kitchen-living room without a dining room, decorated in an American style.

There is one more important point.: Have you ever noticed that most American homes have a special pantry in the kitchen for kitchen appliances and extra utensils that are not used every day?

With a kitchen island, you can do without it - the main thing is to order not a monolithic model, but with built-in shelves.

3. Divide the territory

If Americans have a tendency to combine everything in one room as much as possible, then why don't they get chaos?

It's all about the correct division into zones - despite the absence of walls, they do not mix due to the competent arrangement of furniture, the use of color transitions and decor.

For example, a bar counter. We talk about it in more detail in the corresponding paragraph of our review, but it also copes with this function perfectly, helping to isolate the kitchen from the living-dining room.

For the same purpose, a dining table, flowerpots or various structural elements can be used.

4. Walls and floor - the basis of the foundations

Simplicity and naturalness with high quality is the cornerstone of American design. Leave the pretentiousness and complex textures to the Baroque and.

No wonder it was in this country that the now popular was born - pay attention to the types of finishes that are used there. Of course, this is only one offshoot, but it gives an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat to focus on.

However, this only applies to repairs. What about the situation?

5. Practical furniture

When watching American films, it seems that even a middle-income family lives in luxury apartments.

There are two basic rules here: high-quality natural materials (or a good imitation of them) and elegance. The most simple and functional silhouettes are what you need.

There is another nuance: it all depends on the style you choose. Don't think that American design is monotonous - it all depends on its direction.

Do you want retro? Buy lacquered sofas and cabinets with glossy top. If you like the classic - choose fabric upholstery and natural wood.

5. Pay attention to the facades

The most popular type of facade is paneled. But unlike our latitudes, where they often try to decorate them with curly handles or painting, Americans prefer a simple style - a plain wood in light colors.

This is true for other pieces of furniture as well - the simpler the better. Functional, practical and beautiful.

6. Now about color

It is difficult to single out an unambiguous set of shades here: it all depends on what you want to get as a result.

Love interiors from good classic Christmas movies? Then brown, beige, greenish tones are more suitable for you - those that are considered natural. Avoid flashy colors, try to keep the kitchen elegant and discreet.

There is an opinion that most often Americans make white furniture facades - this is not the case. The shade can be any, even coffee - it is important that it is natural.

Another thing is if you are planning an unusual interior in the style of an American cafe. This is where they come in handy - bright juicy tones are just what you need.

But here, too, there are nuances: the main thing is not to overdo it. One basic tone should be emphasized by a restrained background. Otherwise, the kitchen will turn out to be too colorful. This is no longer American design, but kitsch - why do you need it?

7. What's behind the door?

If you look closely at the photos of American kitchens, you will notice two details:

  • There is no clutter of dishes, utensils and other kitchen stuff;
  • Lots of cabinets and shelves.

This is no coincidence. One of the basic principles of this interior is that everything that can be hidden must be hidden. The above-named items can only be seen if they are used not only for their intended purpose, but also as decoration.

We hide the rest! In large American houses, a separate pantry is sometimes specially allocated for this purpose.

Please note that these are not our mezzanines - no stepladders, everything should be as convenient as possible. Usually a separate corner in the kitchen is fenced under it - so that everything you need is at hand.

8. Let there be light!

We have already written above that such a kitchen requires a lot of space and light. And if it is clear with the first, then the second must be said separately - especially if you decide to try to make it decorated in the American style.

First, it's natural light - the more windows the better. True, turning the walls into one continuous aquarium is still not a good idea.

Secondly, a carefully crafted artificial one. This is where the difficulties begin. No massive chandeliers or heavy floor lamps.

If you want to create a cozy corner in the recreation area with a fireplace, warm carpet and sofas, you can place one elegant chandelier there - no more.

For the rest of the room, we recommend choosing spotlights. Firstly, they fit perfectly into the concept of the American interior - nothing superfluous where not needed. Secondly, it is convenient for them to make wiring for zone lighting.

An alternative would be pendant lamps with as simple lampshades as possible - but this requires a certain wall height.

Convenient solution: In addition to lighting on the ceiling, place spotlights above functional areas. It can be a stove, a sink, a work surface - everything where good light is often needed.

9. Cozy twilight

How about dimming the room when needed? No curtains or curtains in the kitchen area! Blinds, roller blinds or roman blinds. In fact, there is logic in this - it is easy to stain or damage a thin fabric in the kitchen. So this decision is dictated not only by style, but also by considerations of practicality.

Pay attention to the texture: glossy or printed options will not fit into the interior.

The best options are vertical wooden blinds or bamboo racks. If you live in a private house, we highly recommend thinking about shutters - then the American style will be complete.

10. Home saloon

We have already mentioned the bar counter. A practically indispensable element for a studio apartment with an American kitchen.

It is permissible to use it as an additional cabinet for kitchen trifles, and as a separator of two zones and, of course, for its intended purpose.

In addition, the original bar counter is already an interior decoration. If I were you, we would not neglect such a combination of style and practicality.

And, since we have already started talking about aesthetics, we will smoothly move on to the decor.

11. Decorative items

Let's go back to cinematography. Pay attention to how their kitchens are decorated. On the one hand, it seems as if there is practically no decor - you will not find a collection of figurines, an abundance of paintings ...

On the other hand, you cannot say that Americans are fans. It's just that jewelry should be functional too. Bright jars with spices, unusual dishes, motivating inscriptions - all this is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also plays a certain practical role.

A lamp sometimes acts in this capacity - not heavy pans and pots, small kitchen utensils can be hung on a wide wooden frame with light bulbs on thin chains. Both beautiful and practical - what you need!

Greenery will be very much in the subject. Moreover, these are not necessarily decorative flowers - mini-vegetable gardens on the windowsills have recently become a trend. And the fashion for them originated in America. We personally recommend: this is not only a decoration, but also natural spices or vegetables to your table!

12. The technical age

By the way, there should be a lot of it: the love of Americans for technical innovations is known to everyone. Therefore, if you have long wanted to buy some kind of device, do not deny yourself this: a sandwich maker, an electric grill ... All this fits into the conceived concept.

Pay attention to plumbing: wide and deep sinks, which easily fold all the dishes after preparation for a gala dinner - just what you need. It is better to choose natural materials - stainless steel is not quite suitable here.

13. The dining room is the center of the house

Even if you have a small family, a spacious and comfortable dining area is a must have.

The only indulgence is the ability to use a kitchen island or a bar counter in this capacity.

But ideally, it should be a beautiful dining table with a massive top in the dining area.

14. Place for breakfast

An island, wide table-tops, dining area ... Americans believe that this is not enough.

It would be a good practice to arrange another place for rest - for breakfast or lunch. You can adapt a bar counter or a small coffee table for it.

15. Kingdom of textiles

Notice how many fabric elements Americans use in their interiors. This is easy to explain even in terms of history - they are still proud of their cotton products.

Therefore, choose natural fabrics for upholstery and accessories. Tablecloths, napkins - no paper will not be superfluous!

Of course, at first glance, this is not very convenient for those who are used to paper handkerchiefs - but it helps to provide a true American atmosphere.

16. Bonus for creating atmosphere

America is characterized by all kinds of bonuses and additional options. We decided that if we did not use this tradition, the article would not be complete.

Remember how parties are celebrated in the USA? An abundance of themed accessories can turn a kitchen into a zone into a festive zone. Do not neglect them - this will help you not only add variety, but also maintain a true American style in the kitchen, regardless of the season.

There are no trifles in this style. Even plastic dishes can play a role - for example, red cups familiar to everyone from TV shows.

We draw conclusions: the costs for creating an American interior in the kitchen will require considerable. Mainly due to the quality of materials and the need for a large area. But if you take the risk, then the result will delight you for many years: this style does not apply to those that pass quickly.

This article will be a little different from the previous ones in the sense that we will see how cabinet furniture is made in America.

You all perfectly understand that now the whole world is moving forward with great speed (I mean, technology).

And, if you are not aware of this rapid flow, then, for example, if you are engaged in the production of furniture, then the earnings that you have today may not be tomorrow. Yes, most likely, it will be so ... (I now mean "small fish", like me, making furniture in garages, sheds, in ..., at home, finally.).

After all, you can compete with a large number of furniture makers just like you (often who are not stupider than you, who have a more advantageous position in the market) only by the fact that you can offer people services that they cannot offer.

In the manufacture of furniture, as in any other business, timeliness is very important.

I remember the time when cabinet furniture, in the sense in which we understand it today, was just beginning to be produced.

My friends, in order to make some kind of order, ordered cutting in a neighboring city, in bags they took him by train to their apartment on the 3rd floor (can you imagine!), Where they assembled kitchens and cabinets, which they brought later for installation.

The furniture of that time - it sucked ...

But there was demand for it, and there was no competition today. In short, there were the most favorable conditions in this business to make good money, even as a professional.

For 2-3 years of work, people, making this cheap consumer goods, completely changed their lives (and they did not live "so hot").

After several years of work, they already had a workshop in which 5-8 people worked at the same time (imagine, everyone was assembling a kitchen set). For a “mere mortal”, the production volumes (and, as a result - the profit) were just great!

There was an apartment, a car (eventually more than one), and so on.

The same people work now, but what they earn now cannot be compared with what they earned then.

Why am I saying all this?

And I say this to the fact that the market of cabinet furniture, as well as the technology of its production, does not stand still. In this sense, even now you can “catch the wave” by doing what most furniture makers do not yet do, and as a result - have an absolute advantage in this sense, which, of course, will immediately be reflected in the density of your wallet.

As you all know, historically, our technologies have always lagged behind technologies used in the West. Furniture production did not stand aside either.

I think this review will help you catch some trends in the movement of the furniture market, and even better - the opportunity to apply some aspects of this movement with us, that is, with you (as far as possible, naturally).

After all, what they are doing now - we will definitely do in 10-15 years. So, better find out about it now! Right?

So, let's begin!

And let's start with the very basics.

In the West (in the future we will talk specifically about America), for the production of furniture, such basic materials as chipboard and fiberboard are not used for us. They have long since gone away from this.

The main materials from which cabinet furniture is made there are wood, plywood, MDF, plastics.

If we have the basis of cabinet furniture (at least in the sense that all boxes are made of it) - chipboard, then there, in America, plywood is such a material.

Plywood is superior in quality to chipboard in many respects (it is lighter, stronger, environmentally cleaner, less afraid of moisture, less chipping, etc.).

They make boxes from plywood. By the way, now, the cost of plywood, for example, 15mm thick, is about the same as the cost of chipboard, 16mm thick.

And they glue the edge on plywood, as we do on chipboard (even, we glue the edge in a more civilized and practical way, we glue the PVC edge on edgebanding machines, and we glue the “melamine” with an iron, very rarely).
