The interior of absolutely any room implies the presence of certain of its elements, which are most susceptible to operational loads. These are, in particular, the entrance and interior doors, which are used most intensively and are second only to floor coverings in this respect. Due to these circumstances, any door must be protected with a special coating that would ensure its attractive appearance and excellent performance properties for a long time.
Painting protects wood from temperature extremes and high humidity, and also increases its service life.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, such coatings are performed using various paints and varnishes. However, the currently existing huge assortment of a wide variety of paints, enamels and varnishes will certainly confuse a newcomer and push a reasonable question: what is the best way to paint a door and how to avoid mistakes? Let's try to consider this issue comprehensively and in detail.
Why do you need to paint doors?
The modern market of building and finishing materials is able to offer the buyer a wide range of ready-made entrance and interior doors that do not need any revision. However, in some cases, staining the door may be necessary. In the same way, you can restore and update an old door, giving it an attractive and original look.
Quite often, people deliberately purchase unpainted wooden doors in order to then refine them on their own in accordance with their own tastes and preferences. In addition, this approach allows you to somewhat reduce the cost of installing doors.
The main advantage of nitric varnishes is their high drying speed.
There are various techniques for painting surfaces, with which you can achieve not only an even glossy or matte finish, but also create various decorative effects in the form of cracking, scuffs, imitation of wood texture, etc.
However, the main purpose of covering the door with paints and varnishes is to protect the latter from:
- mechanical damage (chips, scratches, abrasions);
- changes in temperature and humidity;
- fungus, mold, insect pests.
The most demanding for the quality of the protective coating is a wooden entrance door, especially if it has direct contact with the external atmospheric environment. Before painting the front door, it is very important to choose the right material correctly.
Classification of paints and varnishes
An exceptional variety of assortment and the widest range of color solutions for paints and varnishes presented on the counters of modern stores are able to satisfy the needs of the most demanding customer and allow the most extraordinary design projects to be realized. All paints and varnishes, including those used for painting doors, can be classified as follows:
- by type: impregnations (stains, etc.), varnishes, paints (enamels);
- by chemical composition: water-borne or based on organic solvents;
- by field of application: for indoor work, for outdoor work, universal;
- by the nature of protection: from changes in humidity and temperature, from mechanical, chemical and other influences.
Various shades of tinted varnish allow you to create an imitation of valuable wood species on a wooden surface.
In addition, the coatings formed with these materials can be transparent or opaque. Transparent coatings form varnishes, glazes and oil impregnations (including drying oil). Various types of paints and enamels are opaque:
- oil;
- alkyd;
- polyurethane;
- acrylic;
- perchlorovinyl.
Each of the above types of paints and varnishes has a number of specific characteristics that ultimately determine the scope of their application.
An important role in the process of painting the door is also played by special primers (primers), which make it possible to create the most even, strong and durable coating.
Coating doors with varnish
It is advisable to use various kinds of transparent and translucent varnishes to cover doors made of solid natural wood and veneered doors.
Transparent varnish allows you to preserve the texture of the wood and even highlight it favorably. This property is especially valuable when processing doors made of valuable wood species. Of course, a door prepared for coating with transparent varnish should not have any defects that spoil the appearance of the product. Translucent (tinted) varnishes are available in a wide variety of colors and shades that allow imitating a particular valuable breed when applied.
Most often, 2 main types of varnishes are used:
- nitrocellulose (NC);
- pentaphthalic (PF).
A distinctive feature of nitro lacquers is the high drying rate of each layer, which forms a strong film with a low sheen. However, nitro lacquers are quite toxic, and therefore have a limited scope.
Pentaphthalic varnishes are much less toxic, but they also dry much longer (at least a day). When dry, PF varnishes form a durable coating with a pronounced gloss.
Regardless of the type of varnish chosen, the final quality and degree of gloss of the coating will directly depend on the number of layers applied.
Painting doors with enamels and paints
Acrylic washable interior paint is very resistant to abrasion and does not have a characteristic specific odor.
Alkyd resin enamels are currently the most widespread and popular. The reason for this is not only their quite acceptable cost, but also their exceptional versatility in application. The advantages of this paint and varnish material are:
- high strength of the coating;
- frost resistance, resistance to temperature extremes;
- water-repellent properties;
- excellent hiding power and high gloss.
Due to the listed qualities, alkyd enamels are used not only indoors. Alkyd enamel can be used to paint the front door in a private house, and not only wooden, but also metal (subject to appropriate preparation). Exceptional hiding power and color saturation make it possible to use alkyd enamels for the restoration of old doors, in order to hide various defects, traces of filling, etc.
However, alkyd enamels are environmentally unsafe and have an extremely unpleasant odor. In addition, they have a long drying time for each layer (at least 10 hours).
Paint-enamel for doors with a plastic effect will allow you to make an imitation of plastic from an old wooden door.
Water-based acrylic paints are completely devoid of such disadvantages. Although it is rightly believed that water-borne paints are unacceptable for painting wooden doors (since they can lead to deformation of the door leaf and skew of the door), acrylic paints are often used for this purpose. This popularity is due to a number of the following advantages:
- environmental safety and lack of smell;
- abrasion resistance;
- high drying speed;
- color fastness;
- long service life.
It is best to paint interior doors with acrylic paints, since they allow atmospheric moisture to pass through, which can have undesirable consequences in conditions of high atmospheric humidity. A significant disadvantage of acrylic paints is their relatively high cost. Considering the fact that acrylic paint is applied, as a rule, in several layers, the cost of painting can increase many times.
Oil paints and enamels made on the basis of drying oils can also be used to paint doors, but are considered morally obsolete. Possessing a high hiding power, they at the same time have a very pungent odor that lasts up to 7 days.

Among the downsides is the long drying time. Therefore, experts recommend using hardeners. In addition, the base of alkyd varnish is a solvent. Therefore, thoroughly ventilate the room after staining.
- Water based varnish... It is considered the safest material for health. Protects the door surface from UV radiation. Dries quickly. Has a high degree of water resistance. Protects the surface from dirt.
- Acrylic lacquer... Ideal for indoor use. Absolutely safe, non-toxic. Maintains the structure of the wood, emphasizing its color. Very durable. The basis is water. Not suitable for exterior doors.
- Polyurethane based varnish... Very durable. It is applied on a primer, since it has a rather dark color.
In order to give the wood a silky shade, you can use oil impregnations. This material is absolutely safe. Funds are often transparent, but, if desired, tinting compositions can be found on sale.
Important! Oil impregnations provide protection from harmful environmental factors not only to the surface of the product, but also to its inner part.
Stains
Often, experts recommend using a stain when painting and restoring a door. The product is made on the basis of alcohol, water, varnish and oil.
This material recreates the structure of wood and gives a presentable look even to the cheapest options. Before using the stain, experienced repairmen recommend thoroughly dampening the surface with a sponge. So the material will lie as flat as possible.
Paint
It differs from varnish coatings in that it is possible to choose the desired color for the design. If you plan to paint the interior door, then it is preferable to choose an odorless material. The base of the paint should be water-based or oil-based. The best options for painting wooden doors are:

Wax oil

Preparing the surface for coating
The removed door should be placed on a horizontal surface. Now you need to remove the old layer of paint. It is best to use a thinner (for easier removal of old coatings). Remember to open doors and windows to ventilate the room.

What paint to paint the interior doors
The market offers the widest selection of tinting, impregnation, paints and varnishes that can be used to paint doors. Water-based paints are especially popular. They are safe, environmentally friendly, relatively inexpensive and durable. Such enamel can be of several types:
- Water-based (water-dispersive)
Most often, the door is covered with a transparent varnish after such painting. Water-based paint does not have an unpleasant odor, dries quickly, costs a little. Most manufacturers produce water-based white paint for interior doors, and the user himself determines the color by adding the appropriate dye.
- Acrylic
Again, enamel created on the basis of water is usually applied in 2-3 layers, it very quickly penetrates into the MDF and is absorbed. Before applying to the surface of acrylic enamel, it will not be superfluous to prime the MDF door. Quick-drying acrylic paints dry in 10-12 hours, and complete drying takes no more than two days.
- Water based thermo enamel

Procedure for painting a door

- Special masking tape;
- Protective material that can be placed under the door;

Selection of paints and varnishes
LKM are classified according to the following criteria:
- By composition (water and organic);
- By protective action (against organic and chemical substances, mechanical influences, changes in humidity and temperature);
- By the method of use (internal, external, combined);
- By type (impregnation, paint, stain, varnish).
1. Paints. They can be used for processing new and old doors. There are no difficulties with the choice, but due to incompetence, people choose the wrong material. Paints and varnishes are transparent and opaque. The first formulations include certain pigments exhibiting a woody structure. But often opaque coatings are used, consisting of organic solvents (oil, alkyd and other types).
The most popular is alkyd enamel, the cost of which is affordable. This coating has high strength, a wide range of shades.... But the enamel smells bad, its unpleasant smell remains for 2 days, therefore they work with it on the street, first removing the canvas from the hinges or freeing the room. An alternative solution is acrylic enamel, which also has many colors but no toxic odor. The dried paint has no particular strength, therefore it is additionally treated with acrylic varnish to protect it from mechanical stress.

The composition is toxic, sometimes leads to allergic manifestations, so you need to work with it in protective equipment. If an old surface is treated with nitro paint, preparation and grinding of the panel to a light shade is carried out in advance.
2. Varnishes. Refers to traditional coatings that give wood a shine and protect its surface. Usually varnish is used for covering doors in rooms with high humidity (baths and saunas).
There are many different varnishes:
- Acrylic. The material is resistant to negative influences, moisture and ultraviolet light. Distinguish between matte and glossy coating without toxic odor.
- Nitrocellulose. Varnish can be used for wooden doors. The coating is not suitable for baths and baths, as it has insufficient strength and cracks quickly.
- Water-based varnish. It has no unpleasant odor. Material properties may vary due to different additives.
- Polyurethane. The varnish has high strength and adhesion to wood, it is matte, semi-gloss and glossy. In addition to wood, polyurethane varnishes can be applied to parquet, veneer, countertops.
- Oil varnish. There is no strong smell. The composition contains a lot of fatty resins, so the old coating is removed from the door in advance. It is better to apply with a brush because of the thick consistency.
- Polyester. The composition has a pungent odor, is highly durable, but toxic, therefore it is suitable for processing street doors.
It is better to paint interior doors with acrylic or polyurethane coating, and resistant materials are suitable for external works or rooms with high humidity..

There are several options:
- With a varnish base (azure). The composition reduces the duration of work, but it is difficult to achieve aesthetics, therefore, a monochromatic surface can be obtained by spraying with a spray gun;
- With oils. Dilute with solvent before use;
- With water. It dries longer, but there is no toxic smell. The composition penetrates deeply, giving a richer shade and a clear pattern that looks beautiful;
- Alcohol-based. Dries quickly, but is more expensive and has a pungent odor.

If you choose what to paint the door surface with, then you need to take into account the drying time and the effect obtained.
Preparing the canvas for painting
First, the door is removed from the hinges, placed on a flat surface. Before using alkyd paint, it is better to place the canvas outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. The door is then locked so that all elements are accessible. Accessories are also removed or wrapped in foil, and the locks are sealed with tape.
Door cleaning
Pre-cleaning, removal of old enamel or paint... For such purposes, it is better to use a grinding machine, and in its absence, you can peel off the layer with medium-grain sandpaper. The bubbles that appear are removed with a hair dryer, which will heat the paint layer to remove it with a spatula. A costly and simple way to clean the surface is with cleaning compounds.

Pieces of dust and paint are swept from the panel, the surface is sanded so that there are no scratches, irregularities or roughness left. The surface is examined from both sides, the tightness of the joints is analyzed, the frame can be strengthened with fasteners and metal corners.
Putty and sanding
The existing cracks and gaps are sealed with a new filler... For alkyd paint, a composition of any color is suitable, and before applying oil impregnation, varnish or wax, the tone of the putty should correspond to the panel. Dry sections of the door are sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. Any defects are removed at this stage.

When using paint, the surface is pre-treated with a fire retardant and antiseptic impregnation (for example, biotex) when the door is installed in the steam room. It is advisable to choose products from one company, which will improve the interaction and quality of the coating.

Staining technology
If a new canvas is being painted, then it should be protected from swelling. Pre-lay it on a flat surface, process it with sandpaper or a grinder. Then the panel is primed, grooves and flat areas are processed. After the surface has dried, secondary treatment is carried out.

After you have chosen what you can paint a wooden door with, you should familiarize yourself with some of the nuances of the work:
- fluff the brush, removing poorly fixed hairs;
- it is necessary to paint the panel door correctly in 3 stages, using a roller, from the upper left corner you need to move to the right, covering the entire canvas. After drying, the door must be processed in the longitudinal direction. Then you need to paint the canvas from the upper right corner;
- when processing a paneled canvas, you need to use a brush, treat the surface carefully, avoiding excess coverage.

To cover the doors with alkyd enamel, the following steps should be followed:
- remove the panel from the hinges so that paint drips do not appear on the surface. Then, with a spatula and sandpaper, you need to remove the scuffs and the old layer, thoroughly rinse the surface and inspect for defects. Chips and cracks are putty, the surface is dried and sanded with sandpaper. At the last stage, priming is carried out;
- the finished canvas lies on a horizontal surface of the floor, table or workbench, covered with polyethylene. The existing glass is sealed with adhesive tape. At the paneled door, the panels are first painted with a brush, and then the projections. In the future, the entire panel is painted over with a roller. With a two-layer application of alkyd enamel, you get a consumption of 40-80 g / m2;
- in addition, you can tint the canvas under wenge, impregnating it with a special compound. This paint is based on natural oils. After the layer of paint has been applied, it must be carried over it with a rubber spatula or sponge about 10 times;
- you can take liquid soap with paint. First, the cloth is covered with paint and liquid soap. The soap needs to be coated with another coat.

When choosing a stain, no primer is used. The agent penetrates into the deep layers of pine or oak wood, coloring its fibers and increasing the protective performance. There are several ways to apply the composition: rubbing, spraying, simple application and staining with a brush. Usually simple application is used.

First, the coloring is carried out along the fibers, and then across them. The next layer is carried out in the direction of the fibers. From below we process the panel with jambs so as not to disrupt the design of the structure.
After the water-based stain has been applied, the surface should be sanded with a sandpaper (due to the raised fibers), dust should be removed and the next coat should be applied. If an alcohol stain is used, the fibers do not rise and no sanding is required. But aqueous formulations are odor-free and non-toxic.
Oil or wax impregnation
There are nuances in processing the canvas with oil impregnation. First, the Pinotex composition is mixed well. If applied incorrectly, dark areas and streaks may appear. For work, use a brush, spray, roller or foam sponge. Depending on the porosity of the material, the number of layers will be calculated.
Figure: 12. Applying wax impregnation First, a little composition is recruited, distributing it evenly over the width of the panel. Then the impregnation is rolled out with a roller or rubbed with a brush without sagging. Drying time is 8-12 hours. Another layer is applied no later than in a day.
Imitation wood
To paint the interior doors under a tree with your own hands was done correctly, follow the instructions:
- we apply light paint (beige, white, gray or yellow) to the building material;
- the dried surface is treated with liquid soap;
- cover with dark paint, remove liquid soap.
The wood structure can be made on veneered material by treating the fibers with a special brush (the effect is "antique"). Then one or more paints and varnishes should be applied to the surface and sanded.
How to paint laminated doors
Compared to doors made from natural wood, laminated products look aesthetically pleasing, easy to use and affordable. To process laminated doors, you will need a roller or brush, wood putty with a spatula, sandpaper, rags, solvent and special enamel.
The surface is completely sanded, cleaned with a cloth from dust and putty with a thin layer. After the putty has dried, sandpaper is applied, applied a second time and polished again after drying. Before painting, the composition is diluted with a solvent. The paint is applied carefully, paying attention to hard-to-reach areas. After 3 layers, the result is fixed with varnish.

The choice of the color of the panel is based on the wishes. The main recommendations include:
- drying the surface before applying alkyd enamel;
- combination of a shade of canvas with furniture;
- choice of a door made of solid wood, coated with oil, for a wooden dwelling;
- combination of an aged door with antiques;
- choice of doors with dark tint for lacquered furniture;
- use of water-based paints.
